Abstract
Present experiment examined the supplementary effect of a tailor-made supplement to farmers’-based diet in crossbred calves. Male crossbred calves (15) were randomly allocated in 3 dietary treatments consisting of 5 calves in each. The dietary treatments were: Control- cereal straw-based diet with concentrate mixture as per the farmers’ practices; CS (customised supplement)- control diet with additional customised supplement @ 0.25% of BW; SD-standard diet. Serum glucose was higher in SD than control, however, CS had an intermediate response. The serum macro (Ca and i-P) and trace (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn) minerals were higher in SD and CS than control. The serum T3 and T4 hormones were significantly higher in SD and CS than control group. The serum growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were significantly higher in SD than control groups, however, SD had an intermediate position. The total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) was significantly higher in SD and CS than control group. The relative mRNA expression of cytokines, viz. IL-2 and IL-4 was significantly higher in SD and CS than control group. The relative mRNA expression of leptin (LEP) was significantly higher and ghrelin (GHRL) was significantly lower in SD than control group, however, CS had a transitional position. Thus, it can be concluded that supplementation of the customised supplement (@ 0.25% BW) to farmers’-based diet significantly improved the serum glucose concentration, metabolic hormone profile, antioxidant capacity and relative mRNA expression of cytokines and genes involved in energy metabolism in crossbred calves.

Abstract
The beef sector in Campos grasslands must increase animal productivity without external inputs, while reducing environmental impact. The objective of this study was to estimate herbage intake (g/metabolic body weight [MBW]/d) of straightbred (Hereford/Angus) and crossbred (F1 of Hereford × Angus) beef cows grazing subtropical native grassland with High and Low herbage allowance (HA, 5 vs. 3 kg DM/kg bodyweight [BW]) during gestation and lactation and its relationship with biological efficiency of cow-calf productivity. Herbage intake (estimated via n-alkanes C32:C33 ratio) was measured during early (Ge1, -163 d prior calving) and mid to late [Gm1 (-83) and Gm2 (-90 d prior calving)] gestation and lactation (L0, L1, and L2, 60, 47, and 31d following calving) periods in 24 to 36 cows, selected to create 8 groups (4 per block) of HA × cow genotype treatment. Cows grazed native grassland year-round, under High and Low HA (except in winter). We analyzed the effect of cow genotype (straightbred vs. crossbred cows) and HA (High vs. Low) on herbage mass and height, daily herbage intake rate (DMI), cow body condition score (BCS), calf average daily gain (ADG) and BW at weaning (BWW) and g of calf weaned/kg DMI. High allowance improved DMI during lactation periods (High 115.6 vs. Low 94.1 ± 5.3; P < 0.05 g/MBW/d). Crossbred cows decreased DMI during gestation (Crossbred 81 vs. Straightbred 94 ± 4.3; P = 0.05 g/MBW/d) compared with straightbred cows. Crossbred and High HA improved biological efficiency, 40.0 vs. 26.2 and 36.0 vs. 29.7 g of calf/kg DMI, respectively. High allowance increased herbage mass and sites with greater canopy height that allow greater DMI, positively associated with cow BCS at weaning, calf ADG, BWW, and g of calf/kg DMI. Crossbred cows reduced DMI during gestation showing no greater annual DMI. Animal productivity and biological efficiency can be improved using High HA and crossbred cows, which should decrease the environmental impact of cow-calf systems.

Abstract
Fall calving (September to October) cows (n = 189 calvings in 5 replications; body weight [BW] = 626 ± 6 kg, body condition score [BCS] = 4.76 ± 0.06) grazing native dormant range were used to determine the effects of protein supplementation on performance and endocrine function of cows and calves. Cows were individually fed either a control (CON; 1.82 kg/d of 38% crude protein [CP]) or restricted (RES; 0.2 kg/d of 8% CP) protein supplement from mid-November to mid-March for 6 consecutive years. During each year, cows were reassigned dietary treatments according to calving date and BCS, and half of the CON and half of the RES cows remained on the same diets as the previous year and the other halves were assigned to the other diet. Statistical analyses were performed with the general linear model procedure utilizing a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement and a complete randomized design. Cows on CON diets lost less BW from November to January compared with RES cows (-25.9 ± 2.6 and -45.0 ± 2.6 kg, respectively; P < 0.001). Protein supplementation increased plasma concentrations of insulin of CON compared with RES cows during treatment (P < 0.05). Calf birth weight did not differ between prenatal supplemention of CON and RES (P = 0.87). A prenatal × postnatal effect was detected for BW of calves; prenatal RES and postnatal CON calves (RES-CON; 189.4 ± 4.2, P = 0.05) had greater 205-d adjusted weaning weights compared with prenatal RES and postnatal RES (RES-RES) and prenatal CON and postnatal RES (CON-RES) calves (163.0 ± 4.2 and 177.8 ± 4.2 kg, respectively). There was a prenatal × postnatal effect on gain of calves from January to weaning (P = 0.05); RES-CON gained more than RES-RES and CON-RES calves. Adjusted yearling 365-d BW was least (P = 0.02) for RES-RES calves. Prenatal protein supplementation of cows decreased (P = 0.03) final BW of calves at harvest (23 mo). Prenatal and postnatal supplementation of cows did not influence carcass characteristics of calves (P > 0.10). In conclusion, increasing protein supplementation of fall calving beef cows from November to March, during breeding and early pregnancy, reduced BW loss of cows, decreased the interval from calving to pregnancy, increased plasma concentrations of insulin in December, January, and March, and increased plasma insulin-like growth factor-I in December without alteration in pregnancy rate. Reduced protein supplementation prenatally increased BW of calves at harvest.

Abstract
We hypothesize that syncytin-Rum1, bovine endogenous retrovirus-K1 (BERV-K1), pregnancy-specific protein-B (PSP-B), and interferon-τ (IFN-τ) will be influenced by maternal nutrient restriction and be differentially expressed during key stages (day 16, 34, and 50) of the establishment of gestation when fed to meet industry standards. Commercial crossbred heifers (n = 49) were maintained on a total mixed ration and supplemented with dried distillers grains with solubles. All heifers were subjected to 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR estrus synchronization protocol. Non-pregnant, non-bred control (NP-NB) heifers (n = 6) were ovariohysterectomized on day 16, and the remaining heifers were AI to a single Angus sire (day of breeding = day 0). On the day of breeding, heifers were randomly assigned to dietary treatments. One half were assigned to control treatment (CON) targeted to gain 0.45 kg/d, and the remaining half were assigned to restricted treatment (RES), which received 60% of control diets. Heifers were subjected to ovariohysterectomy on day 16, 34, or 50 of gestation. Utero-placental tissues were obtained from the uterine horn ipsilateral (P) and contralateral (NP) to the corpus luteum and separated into maternal caruncle (CAR), maternal endometrium, inter-caruncle, (ICAR), and fetal membrane (FM). There were no interactions between stage of gestation and nutritional treatment for syncytin-Rum1 or PSP-B (P > 0.22). Expression of BERV-K1 was influenced by a treatment × stage of gestation interaction (P = 0.03) in NP-CAR. On day 50, heifers fed the CON diet had greater BERV-K1 expression compared with CON heifers on day 16 and 34 and RES heifers at all sampling time points. There was a treatment × stage of gestation interaction (P < 0.01) for IFN-τ in FM tissue. On 16 d, mRNA expression of IFN-τ was greater (P < 0.01) compared with day 34 and 50 for both CON and RES heifers, but RES FM had greater (P < 0.01) IFN-τ expression compared with CON FM. In P-CAR, PSP-B expression increased (P < 0.01) by 18 000-fold on day 50 compared with NP-NB heifers. In P-ICAR, expression of syncytin-Rum1 in P-ICAR was greater (P = 0.01) on day 16 with a 14.14-fold increase compared with relative expression on day 34 and 50; whereas, PSP-B was increased (P < 0.01) on day 34 and 50 compared with day 16. In conclusion, 40% nutrient restriction had limited influence on mRNA of ERVs, PSP-B, and IFN-τ but stage of gestation differences reinforced the importance of these genes during the establishment of pregnancy.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to determine the association of serum leptin concentrations with production measures including DMI, ADG, and G:F as well as carcass characteristics in genetically diverse finishing beef steers. Three cohorts of steers ( = 473 total) were individually fed a finishing ration for 92, 64, and 84 d for cohort 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Serum was collected on d 42, 22, and 19 of the experiment for cohort 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Leptin concentrations were positively correlated to DMI ( = 0.21, < 0.01) but negatively correlated to grams DMI per kilogram initial BW ( = -0.21, < 0.01). Leptin concentrations were also negatively correlated to ADG and G:F ( < 0.01). Leptin concentrations were positively correlated to 12th-rib fat thickness, yield grade, and marbling score ( < 0.01) and negatively correlated to LM area ( < 0.01). Using a mixed model analysis (SAS 9.3; SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC) to account for breed effects, leptin concentrations were positively associated with DMI ( = 0.01) and accounted for 1.10% of the variance. However, if initial BW and yield grade were included as covariates to account for body size and fatness, leptin was negatively associated with DMI ( = 0.02) and accounted for 0.54% of the variance. Regardless of covariates included in the model, leptin was negatively associated with ADG ( < 0.01) and G:F ( < 0.01) and accounted for 2.62 and 7.87% of the variance for ADG and G:F, respectively. Leptin concentrations were also positively associated with 12th-rib fat thickness, yield grade, and marbling score ( < 0.01) and accounted for 14.74, 12.74, and 6.99% of the variance for 12th-rib fat, yield grade, and marbling score, respectively. Leptin concentrations could be a useful physiological marker for growth and feed efficiency of finishing beef cattle. Genetic influences on the biology of leptin also need to be considered when using leptin as physiological marker for production measures.

Abstract
Since the discovery of leptin secreted from adipocytes, specialized tissues and cells have been found that secrete the several peptides (or cytokines) that are characterized to negatively and positively regulate the metabolic process. Different types of adipokines, hepatokines, and myokines, which act as cytokines, are secreted from adipose, liver, and muscle tissue, respectively, and have been identified and examined for their physiological roles in humans and disease in animal models. Recently, various studies of these cytokines have been conducted in ruminants, including dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, and goat. Interestingly, a few cytokines from these tissues in ruminants play an important role in the post-parturition, lactation, and fattening (marbling) periods. Thus, understanding these hormones is important for improving nutritional management in dairy cows and beef cattle. However, to our knowledge, there have been no reviews of the characteristics of these cytokines in beef and dairy products in ruminants. In particular, lipid and glucose metabolism in adipose tissue, liver tissue, and muscle tissue are very important for energy storage, production, and synthesis, which are regulated by these cytokines in ruminant production. In this review, we summarize the physiological roles of adipokines, hepatokines, and myokines in ruminants. This discussion provides a foundation for understanding the role of cytokines in animal production of ruminants.

Abstract
Environmental stressors undoubtedly influence organismal biology, specifically the endocrine system that, in turn, impact cattle at the systems physiology level. Despite the significant advances in understanding the genetic determinants of the ideal dairy or beef cow, there is a grave lack of understanding of the systems physiology and effects of the environmental stressors that interfere with the endocrine system. This is a major problem because the lack of such knowledge is preventing advances in understanding gene-environment interactions and developing science-based solutions to these challenges. In this review, we synthesize the current knowledge on the nature of the major environmental stressors, such as climate (heat, cold, wind, and humidity), nutrition (feeds, feeding systems, and endocrine disruptors) and management (housing density and conditions, transportation, weaning practices). We summarize the impact of each one of these factors on cattle at the systems level, and provide solutions for the challenges.

Abstract
Gestating Angus, nonlactating, spring-calving cows were used to determine variation in maintenance energy requirements (MR); to evaluate the relationship among MR and cow and calf performance, plasma concentrations of IGF-I, T4, glucose, insulin, and ruminal temperature; and to describe the LM proteome and evaluate protein abundance in cows with different MR. Cows (4 to 7 yr of age) with a BCS of 5.0 ± 0.2 and BW of 582 ± 37 kg in the second to third trimester of gestation were studied in 3 trials (trial 1, n = 23; trial 2, n = 32; trial 3, n = 38). Cows were individually fed a complete diet in amounts to meet predicted MR (Level 1 Model of NRC), and feed intake was adjusted weekly until constant BW was achieved for at least 21 d (maintenance). Cows were classified on the basis of MR as low (>0.5 SD less than mean, LMR), moderate (±0.5 SD of mean, MMR), or high (>0.5 SD more than mean, HMR) MR. Blood samples were taken at maintenance and at 2 mo postpartum in trial 2. Muscle biopsies were taken from LMR and HMR after cows consumed actual MR for 28 d (trial 2) or 21 d (trial 3). Proteins from LM were separated by 2-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis and were identified, and abundance was quantified and compared. The greatest differences in MR between cows were 29%, 24%, and 25% in trials 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Daily MR (NEm, kcal·BW(-0.75)·d(-1)) averaged 89.2 ± 6.3, 93.0 ± 4.9, and 90.4 ± 4.6 in trials 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Postpartum BW and BCS, calf birth and weaning weights, postpartum luteal activity, and ruminal temperature were not influenced by MR of the cows. Concentrations of IGF-I were greater (P = 0.001) in plasma of MMR compared with LMR cows consuming predicted MR diets, and MR was negatively correlated with concentrations of IGF-I in plasma (r = -0.38; P = 0.05) at 2 mo postpartum. A total of 103 proteins were isolated from LM; 52 gene products were identified. Abundance of specific proteins in the LM was not influenced (P > 0.11) by MR. Variation in MR of cows will make it possible to improve feed efficiency by selection. Identification of biomarkers for MR will allow selection of more efficient cows, which consume less feed and produce calves with similar weaning weights. Productive cows that require less feed for maintenance will improve efficiency of production and enhance sustainability of the environment.

Abstract
This experiment evaluated the influence of supplement composition on performance, reproductive, and metabolic responses of Angus × Hereford heifers consuming a low-quality cool-season forage (8.7% CP and 57% TDN). Sixty heifers (initial age = 226 ± 3 d) were allocated into 15 drylot pens (4 heifers/pen and 5 pens/treatment) and assigned to 1) supplementation with soybean meal (PROT), 2) supplementation with a mixture of cracked corn, soybean meal, and urea (68:22:10 ratio, DM basis; ENER), or 3) no supplementation (CON). Heifers were offered meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis L.) hay for ad libitum consumption during the experiment (d -10 to 160). Beginning on d 0, PROT and ENER were provided daily at a rate of 1.30 and 1.40 kg of DM/heifer to ensure that PROT and ENER intakes were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Hay and total DMI were recorded for 5 consecutive days during each month of the experiment. Blood was collected every 10 d for analysis of plasma progesterone to evaluate puberty attainment. Blood samples collected on d -10, 60, 120, and 150 were also analyzed for plasma concentrations of plasma urea N (PUN), glucose, insulin, IGF-I, NEFA, and leptin. Liver samples were collected on d 100 from 2 heifers/pen and analyzed for mRNA expression of genes associated with nutritional metabolism. No treatment effect was detected (P = 0.33) on forage DMI. Total DMI, ADG, and mean concentrations of glucose, insulin, and IGF-I as well as hepatic mRNA expression of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were greater (P ≤ 0.02) for PROT and ENER compared with CON and similar between PROT and ENER (P ≥ 0.13). Mean PUN concentrations were also greater (P < 0.01) for PROT and ENER compared with CON, whereas PROT heifers had greater (P < 0.01) PUN compared with ENER. Plasma leptin concentrations were similar between ENER and PROT (P ≥ 0.19) and greater (P ≤ 0.03) for ENER and PROT compared with CON on d 120 and 150 (treatment × day interaction, P = 0.03). Hepatic mRNA expression of mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase was greater (P = 0.05) in PROT compared with CON and ENER and similar between CON and ENER (P = 0.98). The proportion of heifers pubertal on d 160 was greater (P < 0.01) in ENER compared with PROT and CON and similar between PROT and CON (P = 0.38). In conclusion, beef heifers consuming a low-quality cool-season forage had a similar increase in DMI, growth, and overall metabolic status if offered supplements based on soybean meal or corn at 0.5% of BW.

Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo foi buscar associação entre a taxa de prenhez após inseminação e natalidade com marcadores moleculares ligados aos genes do receptor para IGF-1, LHβ, Leptina e receptores do FSH e LH. Utilizaram-se 249 vacas adultas Aberdeen Angus, das quais 199 foram submetidas a protocolos distintos para a IATF, seguida pelo repasse com touros, e 50 vacas formaram o grupo controle representado pelo acasalamento com touros. Foram avaliados o escore de condição corporal (ECC) e o escore de condição ovariana (ECO) ao início da estação reprodutiva. O ECC influenciou a taxa de natalidade, respectivamente de 55,6%, 75,8% e 82,4% (P<0,05) para os animais com ECC menor que 2,5, entre 2,5 a 2,9, e maior ou igual a 3,0, por ocasião da estação reprodutiva. Os marcadores relacionados ao gene do receptor para o IGF-1 (AFZ-1 e HEL5) mostraram associação com a taxa de natalidade. Vacas homozigóticas para o marcador AFZ-1 apresentaram 84,4% de natalidade em comparação às heterozigóticas, com 71,5% (P<0,05). A presença do alelo*161 para o marcador HEL5 foi negativa sobre a natalidade, respectivamente de 33,3% e 76,5% para vacas com e sem esse alelo (P<0,05). Esses resultados demonstram uma importante associação entre os marcadores envolvidos com o receptor para o IGF-1 e desempenho reprodutivo de vacas Angus.

Abstract
This experiment compared growth, body composition, plasma IGF-I and leptin, and reproductive development of beef heifers receiving or not recombinant bovine ST (BST) beginning after weaning until the first breeding season. Fifty Angus × Hereford heifers (initial BW = 219 ± 2 kg; initial age = 208 ± 2 d), weaned at approximately 6 mo of age, were assigned to the experiment (d 0 to 210). On d 0, heifers were ranked by initial BW and age and assigned to 1) treatment with BST or 2) saline control. Heifers assigned to the BST treatment received subcutaneous (s.c.) injections containing 250 mg of sometribove zinc whereas control heifers received a 5-mL s.c. injection of 0.9% saline every 14 d. Treatments were initiated on d 14 and last administered on d 196. Heifers were maintained on separate pastures harvested for hay the previous summer according to treatment and received grass and alfalfa hay at a rate to provide a daily amount of 7.0 and 1.0 kg of DM per heifer, respectively. Heifer shrunk BW was collected on d 1 and 211 for heifer ADG calculation. Blood samples were collected weekly from d 0 to 210 for determination of plasma progesterone to estimate puberty attainment as well as plasma concentrations of IGF-I and leptin in selected samples. On d 0, 63, 133, and 189, heifers were evaluated for intramuscular marbling, LM depth, and backfat thickness via real-time ultrasonography. No treatment effects were detected (P = 0.27) for heifer ADG (0.49 vs. 0.51 kg/d for control and BST heifers, respectively; SEM = 0.02). Mean backfat thickness was lesser (P < 0.01) in BST heifers compared with control cohorts (3.56 vs. 3.92 mm, respectively; SEM = 0.08). Heifers receiving BST had greater plasma IGF-I concentrations compared with control cohorts 7 d after treatment administration (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01). Mean plasma leptin concentrations were lesser (P = 0.05) in BST heifers compared with control cohorts (1.82 vs. 2.03 ng/mL, respectively; SEM = 0.07). Onset of puberty was hastened in BST heifers compared with control cohorts (treatment × day interaction; P = 0.04). In summary, a greater proportion of BST heifers reached puberty during the experiment compared with control cohorts, despite lesser plasma leptin concentrations, backfat thickness, and similar ADG. Hence, circulating IGF-I was positively associated with hastened puberty attainment independently of growth rate, circulating leptin concentrations, and body fat content of replacement beef heifers.

Abstract
The effect of nutrition before and after calving on metabolic status and the resumption of ovulation postpartum was examined in multiparous sucked beef cows on subtropical pastures. At 6-7 months of gestation, Droughtmaster cows were randomly assigned on body weight (BW) and stage of gestation to two groups that received either standard subtropical pasture (SP, n = 7, 543 ± 12 kg BW) or improved pasture (IP, n = 7, 564 ± 12 kg BW). The two nutritional treatments were maintained after calving. Starting at 1 week after calving, cows were monitored for BW and body condition score (BCS, biweekly) and for circulating concentrations of insulin, glucose, IGF-1, GH and leptin (weekly). Ovarian follicular status was monitored weekly by trans-rectal ultrasonography. Fecal samples were obtained at 3-week intervals to ascertain percentage crude protein (%CP) and dry matter digestibility (DMD) of pastures. Crude protein and DMD were greater (P < 0.05) for cows on IP during the first 9 weeks after calving after which there were no differences between nutritional treatments. Cows on IP were heavier (P < 0.05) and had a greater (P < 0.01) BCS than cows on SP at 1 week after calving (585 ± 9 kg and 3.7 ± 0.2 BCS and 528 ± 21 kg and 2.3 ± 0.2 BCS, respectively). Cows on SP showed a gradual increase in BW and there were no differences in BW after approximately 7 weeks postpartum whilst BCS remained less for cows on SP. Plasma concentrations of insulin, glucose, IGF-1 and leptin were all greater (P < 0.01) for cows on IP compared with cows on SP, whilst GH did not differ. The diameter of the largest follicle did not differ between cows on IP and SP throughout the postpartum period. However, 7 of 7 cows on IP resumed ovulations between 12 and 15 weeks postpartum whilst only 1 of 7 cows on SP had resumed ovulation during the study. It is concluded from the findings that exposure of cows to IP and SP before and after calving resulted in two groups of cows with different metabolic homeostasis and that the greater circulating concentrations of insulin, glucose, IGF-1 and leptin promoted the earlier resumption of ovulation for cows on IP.

Abstract
The central nervous system undertakes the homeostatic role of sensing nutrient intake and body reserves, integrating the information, and regulating energy intake and/or energy expenditure. Few tasks regulated by the brain hold greater survival value, particularly important in farmed ruminant species, where the demands of pregnancy, lactation and/or growth are not easily met by often bulky plant-based and sometimes nutrient-sparse diets. Information regarding metabolic state can be transmitted to the appetite control centres of the brain by a diverse array of signals, such as stimulation of the vagus nerve, or metabolic 'feedback' factors derived from the pituitary gland, adipose tissue, stomach/abomasum, intestine, pancreas and/or muscle. These signals act directly on the neurons located in the arcuate nucleus of the medio-basal hypothalamus, a key integration, and hunger (orexigenic) and satiety (anorexigenic) control centre of the brain. Interest in human obesity and associated disorders has fuelled considerable research effort in this area, resulting in increased understanding of chronic and acute factors influencing feed intake. In recent years, research has demonstrated that these results have relevance to animal production, with genetic selection for production found to affect orexigenic hormones, feeding found to reduce the concentration of acute controllers of orexigenic signals, and exogenous administration of orexigenic hormones (i.e. growth hormone or ghrelin) reportedly increasing DM intake in ruminant animals as well as single-stomached species. The current state of knowledge on factors influencing the hypothalamic orexigenic and anorexigenic control centres is reviewed, particularly as it relates to domesticated ruminant animals, and potential avenues for future research are identified.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) plays a pivotal role in cattle fertility, acting as a monitoring signal that allows reproductive events to occur when nutritional conditions for successful reproduction are reached. However, endocrine IGF-I is not a predictor of reproductive events, but rather an indirect estimator of the suitability of the animal to achieve the reproductive event in question. Although measuring circulating IGF-I concentrations might not have any clinical application in the cattle industry, endocrine IGF-I screening will continue to be important for the study of interactions between nutrition and reproduction. In addition, endocrine IGF-I screening could be used as an ancillary test for the selection of cattle for high reproductive potential, especially in herds of high genetic merit for milk production, in which a decline in fertility has been identified.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine if cattle breeds differing in their carcass characteristics also differ in the profiles of their leptin and metabolic hormones. Three breeds, Belgian Blue (BB) (n=12), Limousin (L) (n=12) and Aberdeen Angus (AA) (n=12) with varying ability to deposit fat and protein were compared. Blood, muscle and subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissue were sampled. Animal performance, carcass and meat characteristics were determined as well as plasma leptin concentration, leptin gene expression in SC adipose tissue, leptin-receptor gene expression in SC adipose tissue and plasma concentration of insulin, tri-iodothyronin (T3), thyroxin (T4) and cortisol. The BB bulls showed the lowest values of leptin gene expression (P<0.05). Values of plasma leptin concentration and of leptin-receptor gene expression tended to be lower in BB than in the other breeds. For a similar amount of adipose tissue (after normalisation), BB bulls showed a higher ratio of plasma leptin (P<0.05), whereas normalised leptin gene and leptin-receptor gene expressions did not significantly differ between breeds. Belgian Blue bulls also differed in their metabolic hormone profile, tending to show lower values of insulin, T3 and T4 than the two other breeds. Cortisol levels were significantly lower (P<0.05) in BB than in L and AA animals.

Abstract
Differences in placental mass and vascularity exist between cows gestating single vs. multiple fetuses. Therefore, the association between fetal number and placental development or function was assessed by comparing concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAG), IGF-I, and progesterone in the maternal blood of cattle selected for twin births and gestating 1 (n = 23) vs. 2 (n = 17) fetuses. Samples of jugular venous blood were collected serially at a mean of 57, 121, 192, and 234 d (range within groups was 20 d) after AI. Plasma concentrations of VEGF, IGF-I, and progesterone were measured by double-antibody RIA, and of PAG by an indirect sandwich ELISA. Concentrations of VEGF and progesterone were greater (P < 0.05) in dams with twin vs. single fetuses. Maternal VEGF concentrations did not differ among collection times, but progesterone concentrations increased (P < 0.01) between d 192 and 234. Conversely, PAG concentrations were low at d 57 and 121 and did not differ between dams carrying singles or twins. However, the subsequent increase (P < 0.01) in PAG was greater in dams with twins, resulting in greater (P < 0.01) PAG concentrations for dams with twins at d 192 and 234 (type of birth x time; P < 0.01). Maternal IGF-I concentrations were unaffected by fetal number. Because corpora lutea persisted for the duration of the evaluation period, maternal progesterone concentrations were likely related to the number of corpora lutea rather than the number of fetuses. It is postulated that the greater PAG and VEGF concentrations in the blood of dams gestating twins are the result of a larger uteroplacental mass, including increased numbers of binucleate cells and increased angiogenesis and vasculogenesis associated with a twin pregnancy. Although PAG and VEGF were elevated in dams gestating twins, variability within and among birth groups limits the use of PAG or VEGF measurements for the diagnosis of twins.

Abstract
Ketosis was diagnosed in a flock of Merino ewes that conceived from synchronised oestrus in the early autumn period. On day 140 of pregnancy the ewes were sampled for determination of betaOH-butyrate (BHB), AST, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), total cholesterol (TCH), insulin, T4, T3, cortisol, IGF-1 and leptin. The results were evaluated according to the number of fetuses born some days later and the presence of hyperketonaemia (BHB: > or = 1.60 mmol/l). In May, about 3 months after lambing, cyclic ovarian function was induced (Cronolone + eCG), and the ewes were inseminated artificially (AI) 48 h after the removal of gestagen-containing sponge. At the time of AI and 10 days later blood samples were collected again to check the plasma levels of the same constituents as previously (in samples taken at AI), and to monitor the ovarian response by assaying progesterone (in both samples). On day 140 of gestation significantly lower BHB levels were detected in dams with single (n = 41) than in those with twin (n = 57) pregnancies. Hyperketonaemia was found only in ewes bearing twins (n = 27). These animals had higher NEFA and cortisol, and lower TCH, insulin, IGF-1, leptin and T3 levels than their normoketonaemic twin-bearing flock-mates, and those with single pregnancy. The blood glucose concentrations varied within a wide range, and the means of groups did not exhibit any significant differences. The formerly hyperketonaemic individuals were characterised by lower leptin level 3 months after lambing, and they showed a poorer response to the cycle-induction procedure than the others. The non-responders had lower IGF-1 and leptin levels than those ovulated after this treatment. It was concluded that the subclinical form of ovine ketosis is characterised by complex endocrine alterations, reflecting an obvious form of negative energy balance. If attempts to induce cyclic ovarian function outside the breeding season are made soon after lambing, the ovarian response and fertility of these ewes may also be depressed.
