Abstract
Length of the menstrual cycle was positively associated with antral follicle number in women. If this pattern is consistent in cattle, a value-added benefit to using automated activity monitors to determine estrous status could be the ability to predict antral follicle count (AFC). We, therefore, hypothesized that as inter-estrous interval increased ultrasonographic AFC would be greater in crossbred beef heifers. Over 3 yr, crossbred beef heifers (n = 1,394) were fitted with automated activity monitors for 81 d. From days 42 to 46, heifers were submitted for ultrasonographic examination to determine AFC. From days 60 to 81, heifers were visually observed twice daily for 45 min for signs of behavioral estrus. Heifers that had a behavioral estrus that coincided with a sensor-based estrus and had a previous sensor-based estrus between 15 and 26 d earlier were used for the analysis (n = 850). A combination of regression analyses and correlation analyses were applied to understand the association between data collected by sensors and follicle number determined by ultrasonographic examination. Antral follicle count was analyzed using the GLM procedure of SAS with estrous cycle length (15 to 26 d) as a fixed effect. Estrus was more likely to initiate in the early morning hours and peak activity was greater (P < 0.0001) when estrus initiated between 0200 and 0800 hours then when estrus initiated at other times of the day. Antral follicle count did not differ due to length of the estrous cycle (P = 0.87). Thus, length of the estrous cycle obtained from three-axis accelerometers cannot be used to predict follicle number in crossbred beef heifers; however, machine learning approaches that combine multiple features could be used to integrate parameters of activity with other relevant environmental and management data to quantify AFC and improve reproductive management in beef cows.

Abstract
Successful reproduction is a cornerstone in food animal industry in order to sustain food production for human. Therefore, various methods focusing on genetics and postnatal environment have been identified and applied to improve fertility in livestock. Yet there is evidence indicating that environmental factors during prenatal and/or neonatal life can also impact the function of reproductive system and fertility in the animals during adulthood, which is called the developmental programming of reproduction. The current review summarizes data associated with the developmental origins of reproduction in the female animals. In this regard, this review focuses on the effect of plane of nutrition, maternal body condition, hypoxia, litter size, maternal age, parity, level of milk production and milk components, lactocrine signaling, stress, thermal stress, exposure to androgens, endocrine disrupting chemicals, mycotoxins and pollutants, affliction with infection and inflammation, and maternal gut microbiota during prenatal and neonatal periods on the neuroendocrine system, puberty, health of reproductive organs and fertility in the female offspring. It is noteworthy that these prenatal and neonatal factors do not always exert their effects on the reproductive performance of the female by compromising the development of organs directly related to reproductive function such as hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary, oviduct and uterus. Since they can impair the development of non-reproductive organs and systems modulating reproductive function as well (e.g., metabolic system and level of milk yield in dairy animals). Furthermore, when these factors affect the epigenetics of the offspring, their adverse effects will not be limited to one generation and can transfer transgenerationally. Hence, pinpointing the factors influencing developmental programming of reproduction and considering them in management of livestock operations could be a potential strategy to help improve fertility in food animals.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of antral follicle count (AFC) in female cattle on offspring characteristics. Recently calved multiparous Bos indicus cows (Nelore; n = 222) were evaluated using ultrasonography on random days of their estrous cycle to determine the AFC and were classified into "low" (≤15 follicles), "intermediate" (≥16 and ≤ 29 follicles), and "high" (≥30 follicles) AFC groups. Weight and scrotal circumference (SC) of male offspring from these cows (n = 127) were determined from 20 to 27 months, and the data were added to a genetic evaluation program (economic total genetic merit, MGTe and TOP value) that uses the kinship matrix to evaluate the genetic relationship between animals. The AFC of female offspring from these cows (n = 95) was evaluated to analyze the relationship between the AFC of mothers and daughters. The effects of maternal AFC on the genetic merit of male and female offspring were analyzed using GLIMMIX and GLM, respectively. Correlations were assessed using the Pearson's coefficient. Male offspring of cows with high AFC had superior MGTe (P = 0.005) and TOP values (P = 0.01) than those from cows with low AFC. Additionally, the AFC of mothers was positively correlated with MGTe (R = 0.33; P < 0.0001) and negatively correlated with TOP values (R = -0.32; P < 0.0001). The SC (P = 0.01), but not body weight of the offspring (P = 0.46) was affected by maternal AFC. The daughters' AFC were correlated (R = 0.29; P = 0.004) with mothers' AFC and were influenced by maternal (P = 0.05) but not paternal (P = 0.77) effect. In conclusion, cows with high AFC produced males with greater MGTe, superior TOP values and higher SC. Maternal AFC did not influence the weight of male offspring but was correlated with the AFC of daughters.

Abstract
Mares (n = 77) were evaluated by antral follicle count (AFC) and selected as embryo recipients. Cyclic recipients received embryos between days 4-6 after ovulation. The acyclic recipients received an intramuscular (i.m.) protocol with 5mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) on the day of donor ovulation (D0; D-4 recipient), 3mg of EB on the following day (D1; D-3 recipient), and 3mg of EB (D2; D-2 recipient). Furthermore, 1500mg of progesterone (P4) i.m. given on D0 of the recipient (D4 donor) followed by 1500mg of P4 on the day of ET (D4-6 recipient). On the ET day, the AFC and animals' weight, body condition score (BCS), corpus luteum diameter, age and degree of uterine edema (UE) were measured. Pregnancy was confirmed on days 12 and 30. Low AFC was defined as ≤11 follicles (n = 43 mares) and high AFC as >11 follicles (n = 34 mares). Data were analyzed by a mixed effect model, including AFC group, reproductive seasonality, and season (P ≤ 0.05). UE was influenced (P = 0.05) by reproductive seasonality. The conception rate was higher (P = 0.016) in recipients with low (79.07 %) than high AFC (61.76 %) and higher (P = 0.005) in cyclic (81.40 %) than anestrus (58.82 %) mares. In addition, we observed a tendency (P = 0.06) for the interaction of AFC*reproductive seasonality, showing that high*anoestrus recipients had the lowest conception rate (37.50 %b) compared to high*cyclic (83.33 %a), low*anoestrus (77.78 %a) and low*cyclic (80 %a). The conception rate was higher in cyclic recipients with low AFC. Furthermore, UE was influenced by reproductive seasonality and mares in anestrus showed a higher degree of UE than cyclic mares.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of feeding a vitamin and mineral supplement to nulliparous beef heifers throughout gestation on the mineral status of the dam, calf, placenta, and colostrum; offspring growth performance; and physiological responses of offspring raised as replacement heifers. Angus-based heifers (n = 31, initial body weight [BW] = 412.5 ± 53.68 kg) were adapted to an individual feeding system for 14 d, estrus synchronized and bred with female-sexed semen. Heifers were ranked by BW and randomly assigned to receive either a basal diet (CON; n = 14) or the basal diet plus 113 g heifer-1 d-1 of the vitamin and mineral supplement (VTM; n = 17). Targeted BW gains for both treatments was 0.45 kg heifer-1 d-1. Liver biopsies were obtained from dams at breeding, days 84 and 180 of gestation. At calving, liver biopsies were taken from dams and calves; colostrum, placenta, and blood samples were collected; and calf body measurements were recorded. After calving, all cow-calf pairs received a common diet through weaning, and F1 heifer calves were managed similarly after weaning. Offspring growth performance, feeding behavior, blood metabolites, and hormones were evaluated from birth through 15 mo of age. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure in SAS with repeated measures where appropriate. Hepatic concentrations of Se decreased in VTM dams (P ≤ 0.05) from day 84 to calving, while concentrations of Cu decreased in VTM and CON (P ≤ 0.05) from day 84 to calving. Calf liver concentrations of Se, Cu, Zn, and Co at birth were greater for VTM than CON (P ≤ 0.05), but calf birth BW and body measurements were not different (P = 0.45). Placental Se, colostrum quantity, total Se, Cu, Zn, and Mn in colostrum were greater (P ≤ 0.04) in VTM dams than CON. Finally, offspring from VTM dams were heavier than CON (P < 0.0001) from weaning through 15 mo of age. These results were coupled with greater (P ≤ 0.04) blood glucose at birth, decreased (P ≤ 0.05) blood urea nitrogen at pasture turn out and weaning, and altered feeding behaviors in VTM offspring compared with CON. Maternal gestational vitamin and mineral supplementation enhanced mineral status in dams and F1 progeny, augmented postnatal offspring growth and blood metabolites. Consequently, in utero vitamin and mineral supplementation may exert programming outcomes on the performance and productivity of females raised as herd replacements and should be considered when developing diets for gestating cows and heifers.

Abstract
Although the negative effect of maternal exposure to heat stress on production and reproduction of offspring has been reported, there are some discrepancies among various studies about which gestational stage is more critical in this regard. Therefore, the present research was conducted to identify during which stage(s) of pregnancy maternal exposure to heat stress would lead to more dramatic decrease in productive and reproductive performance of offspring. To this end, offspring were classified based on the gestational stage they were in utero exposed to heat stress into four categories, including heat stress exposure (HSE) during only the first trimester of gestation (HSE1), HSE during the first and second trimester of gestation (HSE2), HSE during the second and third trimester of gestation (HSE3) and HSE during only the third trimester of gestation (HSE4). In study I, data of birth weight, milk yield and reproductive variables of 11,788 offspring and data of the month they were conceived were retrieved. In study II, blood samples (n = 521) were collected from offspring in various categories of HSE for measurement of serum AMH. Offspring in HSE1 and HSE2 categories were heavier than offspring in HSE3 and HSE4 categories (P < 0.0001). Offspring in HSE1 and HSE3 categories had the lowest and highest milk production, respectively (P < 0.05). First service conception rate was the greatest and worst in HSE1 and HSE4 categories, respectively (P < 0.05). Service per conception and calving to conception interval were greater in HSE2 than HSE4 category (P < 0.05). Concentration of AMH was lower in HSE1 than HSE4 category (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the present study indicated that the early stage of gestation could be a more critical period for the negative impact of in utero heat stress on developmental programming of milk production and ovarian reserves. Yet an evident temporal pattern for the adverse effect of maternal heat stress on developmental programming of reproductive performance in offspring was not found.

Abstract
Multiparous dams have been reported to produce offspring with greater fertility and higher AMH concentration, as a marker of ovarian reserves, as compared with nulliparous and primiparous dams. Yet it has remained to be addressed whether this phenomenon can still be true for old multiparous cows which might experience some geriatric changes in their reproductive system. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the productive and reproductive performance of offspring with different maternal parity. To this end, offspring were classified based on their maternal parities into four categories, including offspring of nulliparous (no previous parity), primiparous (one previous parity), young multiparous (two to six previous parities) and old multiparous (seven or more previous parities) dams. In study I, data of birth weight, milk yield and reproductive variables of 11,788 offspring and data of their maternal parity were retrieved. In study II, blood samples (n = 521) were collected from offspring with various maternal parity for measurement of serum AMH. Birth weight was the lowest in the offspring of nulliparous dams (P < 0.0001) and it was lower in offspring of primiparous and old multiparous dams than offspring of young multiparous dams (P < 0.05). Milk production was the lowest in offspring of old multiparous dams (P < 0.01), and it was lower in offspring of young multiparous dams than offspring of nulliparous and primiparous dams (P < 0.0001). Offspring of old multiparous dams had greater first service conception rate, less services per conception and shorter calving to conception interval than offspring of nulliparous, primiparous and young multiparous dams (P < 0.05). Furthermore, AMH concentration was higher in offspring of old multiparous dams than offspring of nulliparous and primiparous dams (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the present study revealed greater milk production in offspring resulting from dams with lower parity, probably due to the genetic selection for improvement of milk production in dairy cows which imparts the younger generations greater genetic merits for milk production. Reproductive performance, however, was greater in offspring born to dams with higher parity, particularly those born to old multiparous dams, and this phenomenon might be related to their lower milk production and higher AMH concentration.

Abstract
The antral follicle count (AFC) and Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentration are validated markers for ovarian reserve in cattle, but their use as fertility markers is controverse. Here we assessed the effects of postpartum diseases on AFC and AMH concentration, as well as the influence of parity and breed on these parameters. Cows (n = 513, mostly Holstein Friesian and Brown Swiss, parity 3.0 ± 1.8) underwent a single ultrasonography examination 28-56 days after parturition and categorized as having low (n ≤ 15 follicles), intermediate (n = 16-24 follicles), or high (n ≥ 25 follicles) AFC based on objective video analysis of recorded sequences. Blood samples for AMH determination were collected at the time of examination and animals divided into low (< 0.05 ng/ml) and high AMH (≥ 0.05 ng/ml) group, respectively. No effects of postpartum diseases or breed on either AFC or AMH groups could be observed. There was a strong interaction between parity and AFC, primiparous cows having less follicles (13.6 ± 6.2 vs. 17.1 ± 7.0, P < 0.001) than pluriparous cows. The AFC did not affect reproductive parameters or productivity of the cows. In comparison, pluriparous cows with high AMH concentration had shorter calving to first service (86.0 ± 37.6 vs. 97.1 ± 46.7 days, P < 0.05) and calving to conception (123.8 ± 51.9 vs. 135.8 ± 54.4 days, P < 0.05) intervals, but lower milk yield (8440.3 ± 2292.9 vs. 8927.9 ± 2192.5 kg, P < 0.05) compared to cows with low AMH. In conclusion, no effect of postpartum diseases on AFC or AMH concentration of dairy cows could be observed. However, an interaction between parity and AFC, as well as associations of AMH with fertility and productivity in pluriparous cows, were demonstrated.

Abstract
This study characterizes the ovarian volume, antral follicle count (AFC), and ovarian dynamics of cows at different ages. Nellore cows (Bos taurus indicus) were used in two experiments. In Experiment 1, 57 lactating cows ranging in age from 3 to 23 years had their estrous cycle synchronized based on progesterone/estradiol treatments. The ovaries were scanned by ultrasound to record ovarian volume and AFC prior to follicle aspiration (AFC1). A second AFC (AFC2) was performed 5 days later to count only the growing antral follicles. In Experiment 2, six long-lived (14- to 23-year-old) and three young (4- to 8-year-old) non-lactating cows were submitted to daily ovarian scanning ultrasound during an interovulatory interval. Blood samples were collected during the estrous cycle to assess serum progesterone concentration. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis tests. In Experiment 1, there were more (P < 0.05) antral follicles in AFC1 (31.4 ± 3.5) than in AFC2 (22.6 ± 2.4). In AFC1, the volume of the right ovary (6.03 ± 0.5 cm3) was greater (P < 0.01) than that of the left one (4.53 ± 0.4 cm3), although the AFC did not differ between the two ovaries (15.3 ± 1.8 and 16.3 ± 1.8, respectively). In both AFC1 and AFC2, there was a decline in the number of antral follicles as the age of the cow increased (P < 0.01). Ovarian volume (average of both ovaries) was related (P < 0.01) with AFC (R² = 0.1499) and cow age (R² = 0.0911). In Experiment 2, young and old cows under the age of 20 had a pattern of follicular growth waves, while cows over 20 years old did not have waves of follicular growth. The progesterone profiles and corpus luteum size during the estrous cycle did not differ between the groups. In conclusion, although cows had increased ovarian volume and decreased follicular population as they age, the follicular growth pattern and corpus luteum functionality appear to be unaffected by age.

Abstract
Ruminants are born with a finite number of healthy ovarian follicles and oocytes (ovarian reserve) and germ cell proliferation in the developing foetal gonad predominantly occurs during early gestation. Two markers have been established to reliably estimate the size of the ovarian reserve in cattle: the number of antral follicles ≤3 mm in diameter recruited per follicular wave (Antral Follicle Count, AFC) and peripheral concentrations of the Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). Studies that used one or both indicators show that the size of ovarian reserve varies greatly among age-matched individuals, but is highly repeatable in the same animal. Conditions during prenatal life are likely among the causes of such variation in the ovarian reserve. In addition, the size of the ovarian reserve is a moderately heritable trait in cattle. The association between ovarian reserve and fertility is controversial. Several studies indicate that cattle with a low ovarian reserve have phenotypic characteristics that are associated with suboptimal fertility. On the contrary, the presence and absence of a positive association between AFC and/or AMH and fertility measures (i.e. no. on services/conception, pregnancy rates, pregnancy loss) have been equally reported in cattle. In conclusion, the size of the ovarian reserve in the progeny can be enhanced by improving management of the dam from preconception to early gestation and also through genetic selection. However, although the ovarian reserve may be among the determinants of reproductive success in ruminants, the use of AFC/AMH as reliable predictors of fertility is yet to be established. Furthermore, the possibility that there is a complex interaction of AFC, AMH and reproduction has yet to be fully characterised and exploited to improve fertility in cattle.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine the distribution of preantral follicles in bovine ovaries. Follicular distribution in the ovaries (n = 12) was evaluated in the region of the greater curvature of the ovary (GCO) and the region close to the ovarian pedicle (OP) of Bos taurus indicus heifers of the Nelore breed. Two fragments were obtained from each region of the ovary (GCO and OP). The mean weight of the ovaries was 4.04 ± 0.32 g. The mean antral follicle count (AFC) was 54.58 ± 3.55 follicles (minimum and maximum variation of 30 and 71 follicles, respectively). In total, 1123 follicles were visualized in the region of the GCO; 949 (84.5%) of them were primordial follicles and 174 (15.5%) were developing follicles. The region close to the OP contained 1454 follicles, of which 1266 (87%) were primordial follicles and 44 (12.9%) were developing follicles. The OP region showed a higher proportion of intact follicles in the primordial (P < 0.0001) and primary (P = 0.042) stages compared with the GCO region. The proportion of secondary follicles was similar in the OP and GCO regions. The ovaries of two bovine females (16%; 2/12) contained multi-oocytes follicles, which were characterized as primary follicles. Therefore, the distribution of preantral follicles in the bovine ovary was heterogeneous, with the region close to the OP containing a greater number of preantral follicles compared with the GCO region (P < 0.05).

Abstract
In an attempt to develop accessible methods for the precocious individual selection based on phenotypic attributes related to reproductive superiority, this study evaluated the effects of follicular wave stages (emergence and dominance) and the repeatability coefficients of potential fertility predictors (vulvar morphometry, uterine biometry, echogenicity and echotexture, ovarian biometry, and antral follicle count - AFC) in two breeds of purebred prepubertal heifers. Nellore (n = 30) and Caracu (n = 28) heifers were submitted to a sequence of 11 evaluations conducted every 48 h (D0 - random day of the antral follicular wave until D20) to study potential fertility indicators under natural conditions. The data obtained were compared according to breed and follicular wave stage. Statistical analysis included the fixed effects of breed, evaluation day, and their statistical interaction and was performed using MIXED, GENMOD, GLM, and CORR procedures of the SAS program. Breed was found to influence rima height, ovarian area, and AFC, which were greater in Nellore heifers (P < 0.02). The follicular wave stage also influenced most of the potential predictors, highlighting AFC which was higher in the presence of a dominant follicle in both breeds (P < 0.0001). The repeatability coefficients for vulvar width (0.76 and 0.66), ovarian area (0.70 and 0.62), and AFC (0.76 and 0.74) were considered to be high in Nellore and Caracu heifers, respectively. Only ovarian biometry was able to predict AFC (Pearson correlation coefficient ≥ 0.66; P < 0.0001) in prepubertal heifers. The results indicate that most of the phenotypic reproductive parameters analyzed can be characterized throughout prepuberty using a single measure since they are intrinsic attributes of the individual.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the antral follicle count (AFC) and the ovarian morphology of Bos indicus in different age groups: 12-23 months (G1), 24-35 months (G2), 36-47 months (G3), 48-59 months (G4), and >60 months (G5). Ovaries were collected individually and sent to the laboratory, where we measured AFC, the diameter and weight of the ovaries, dominant follicle (DF, ≥8mm), corpus luteum (CL), and small follicles (SF, <8mm). AFC were classified as high, intermediate-high, intermediate-low, and low. A group of ovaries was subjected to follicular aspiration to evaluate the morphological quality of the recovered cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs). Mean AFC did not vary between ages. The morphological characteristic that was most closely correlated with AFC was the weight of the small follicles. There was no relationship between AFC and the weight and diameter of the DF and CL. Quality of the COCs was superior in ovaries in which the CL was present, but it did not vary between the AFC classes. We conclude that AFC can be performed on a single ovary, regardless of the presence, diameter, and weight of the CL and DF in zebu between 12 and 60 months old.

Abstract
Cattle fertility remains sub-optimal despite recent improvements in genetic selection. The extent to which an individual heifer fulfils her genetic potential can be influenced by fetal programming during pregnancy. This paper reviews the evidence that a dam's age, milk yield, health, nutrition and environment during pregnancy may programme permanent structural and physiological modifications in the fetus. These can alter the morphology and body composition of the calf, postnatal growth rates, organ structure, metabolic function, endocrine function and immunity. Potentially important organs which can be affected include the ovaries, liver, pancreas, lungs, spleen and thymus. Insulin/glucose homeostasis, the somatotropic axis and the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis can all be permanently reprogrammed by the pre-natal environment. These changes may act directly at the level of the ovary to influence fertility, but most actions are indirect. For example, calf health, the timing of puberty, the age and body structure at first calving, and the ability to balance milk production with metabolic health and fertility after calving can all have an impact on reproductive potential. Definitive experiments to quantify the extent to which any of these effects do alter fertility are particularly challenging in cattle, as individual animals and their management are both very variable and lifetime fertility takes many years to assess. Nevertheless, the evidence is compelling that the fertility of some animals is compromised by events happening before they are born. Calf phenotype at birth and their conception data as a nulliparous heifer should therefore both be assessed to avoid such animals being used as herd replacements.

Abstract
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a member of the TGF-β superfamily produced by follicular granulosa cells (GCs) in women and cattle and is considered an endocrine biomarker of ovarian follicular reserve. The study examined how age and parity influence serum AMH concentration and investigated the presence of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in AMH gene in Bos indicus breeds viz Malnad Gidda Amritmahal and Hallikar. All five exons of AMH gene amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) were subjected to Sanger sequencing and identified important SNP and its effects. We observed a highly significant relationship between parity and AMH concentration in Amritmahal cattle, whereas Malnad Gidda and Hallikar breeds did not show a significant difference. We identified one SNP located in exon 5 (rs21402788) with base change A>G, a non-synonymous mutation resulting in a change in amino acid Q>R and the protein product. It is concluded that AMH level could be considered as an indicator of the ovarian reserve and productive herd life (longevity) irrespective of age/parity, especially in Bos indicus breeds of cattle.

Abstract
Objectives were to test the hypothesis that pre and postnatal nutrition in the bovine female, independently or interactively, affect age at puberty and functional characteristics of the estrous cycle of sexually mature offspring. Brangus and Braford (n = 97) beef cows bearing a female fetus were fed to achieve body condition scores of 7.5-8 (H, obese), 5.5-6 (M, moderate) or 3-3.5 (L, thin) by the start of the third trimester and maintained until parturition. Heifer offspring were weaned and fed to gain weight at either a high (H; 1 kg/d) or low (L; 0.5 kg/d) rate between 4 and 8 months of age, then fed the same diet during a common feeding period until puberty which resulted in compensatory growth of heifers in the L group. Heifers (n = 95) from the H postnatal diet reached puberty two months earlier (12 ± 0.4 months; P = 0.0002) than those from the L postnatal diet (14 ± 0.4 months). Estrous cycles of a subgroup of postpubertal heifers (n = 53) were synchronized to evaluate antral follicle count (AFC), rate of growth and size of the pre-ovulatory follicle, size of corpus luteum and ovary, endometrial thickness, and plasma concentrations of progesterone and estradiol-17β (E2). Although there was a trend for postnatal H heifers to have greater AFC and plasma concentrations of E2 compared to L heifers, neither pre nor postnatal nutrition affected any other physiological or hormonal variables, including short-term fertility. Postnatal nutritional effects on pubertal age remained the dominant observed feature.

Abstract
As prenatal transportation stress altered behavior and adrenal glucocorticoid secretion of calves, we hypothesized that prenatal transportation stress would decrease ovarian reserve size and negatively impact female offspring fertility. The impact of prenatal transportation stress on ovarian follicle numbers in female offspring for three generations was studied. Brahman cows were transported for 2 h on day 60 ± 5, 80 ± 5, 100 ± 5, 120 ± 5, and 140 ± 5 of gestation. Ovaries were collected from offspring of transported or non-transported dams at multiple ages. Primordial, primary, secondary, and antral follicles were histologically analyzed. Antral follicle numbers were determined by ultrasound in a subset of offspring. Numbers of primordial, primary, secondary, and antral follicles were analyzed using the MIXED procedure, while the CORR procedure of SAS was used to determine the correlation between follicles observed by ultrasonography and histology. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in the number of primordial, primary, secondary, antral, or total follicles observed histologically due to treatment. Younger females had significantly greater numbers of follicles than older females (P < 0.0001). Antral follicles tended to be correlated with total histological ovarian follicles (P = 0.10). There was no difference in the number of antral follicles observed at ultrasound due to treatment (P = 0.3147), or generation (P = 0.6005) when controlling for age at observation. These results show that short-term transportation stress during early- to mid-gestation did not impact fertility as measured by ovarian follicle numbers in female Brahman offspring for three generations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of age of Nellore (Bos indicus) donors on the efficiency of in vitro embryo production (IVEP) and pregnancy rate. Thirty-six donors, including 11 female calves (13±0.61 months), 17 prepubertal heifers (25±0.78 months) and 8 cows (83±28 months), were submitted to 3 procedures of ovum pick up (OPU) on random days of the estrous cycle at intervals of 21 days. Caspase-3 and IGFBP2 were quantified in oocytes and blastocysts for the evaluation of oocyte and embryo quality. The produced embryos were vitrified (n=445) and transferred to synchronized recipients. Cows produced a larger number of follicles (cows: 54.5±6.2; calves: 20.0±0.57; prepubertal heifers: 20.8±0.46), total oocytes (cows: 45.97±7.22; calves: 28.93±6.14; prepubertal heifers: 27.21±4.94), and cleaved oocytes (cows: 21.14±4.22; calves: 13.09±3.72; prepubertal heifers: 12.4±3.19). The cleavage rate was similar between age categories; however, cows tended (p<0.07) to produce a larger number of blastocysts (9.74±2.26) per OPU than calves (5.57±1.99) and prepubertal heifers tended to have a higher blastocyst yield (35.4%) than calves (27.1%) (p<0.07). The expression levels of IGFBP2 and caspase-3 were higher in oocytes derived from calves compared to the other two categories. The pregnancy rate was higher in calves (43.1%) and cows (40.4%) than in prepubertal heifers (33.8%) (p=0.03). Despite the larger numbers of follicles and viable oocytes in cows, the blastocyst production results and pregnancy rates obtained indicate that the use of young females as oocyte donors in IVEP is feasible and may contribute to reduce the generation interval.

Abstract
Management strategies utilized during pre-breeding development of replacement heifers can impact fertility and the ovarian reserve. Angus-Hereford crossbred heifers (n = 233) were utilized over a three-year period to determine the effects of administration of a growth promoting implant at either branding or weaning on growth, reproduction, and ovarian development. Heifer calves were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: 1) non-implanted controls (CON; n = 79), 2) implanted at approximately 2 mo of age (average calf age = 58 d) with Synovex-C (BIMP, n = 82), or 3) implanted at approximately 7mo of age (average calf age = 210 d) with Synovex-C (WIMP; n = 72). In yr 2 and 3 a subset of heifers (yr 2 n = 16; yr 3 n = 14) were unilaterally ovariectomized. Heifers implanted at 2 mo of age were heavier at weaning, yearling (mid-February; average calf age = 332 d), and at the beginning of the breeding season (P < 0.01) compared to CON and WIMP heifers. Average daily gain (ADG) was similar among treatments from weaning to yearling and weaning to the start of the breeding season (P ≥ 0.61), however, WIMP heifers had increased (P = 0.05) ADG from yearling to the start of the breeding season compared to BIMP heifers. Antral follicle count and reproductive tract scores were not influenced by implant treatment (P ≥ 0.18). Response to synchronization of estrus was increased (P = 0.02) in WIMP compared to CON heifers, with BIMP heifers similar to all other treatments. First service conception rates tended to be increased (P = 0.09) in CON heifers compared to WIMP heifers, with BIMP heifers similar to CON and WIMP. Final pregnancy rates were similar (P = 0.54) among treatments. A treatment × yr interaction was detected (P = 0.01) for the number of primordial follicles/section with increased primordial follicles in WIMP heifers in yr 3 compared to BIMP and WIMP heifers in yr 2 and CON heifers in yr 3, as well as in BIMP compared to WIMP heifers in yr 2. Utilization of growth promoting implants did not negatively impact postweaning reproductive development or compromise pregnancy rates in beef heifers. Based on these results, administration of a growth promoting Synovex-C implant at 2 mo of age may allow for increased body weight at weaning, without hindering reproductive performance.

Abstract
The antral follicle count (AFC) is a test in which the number of oocyte-containing follicles that are developing in both ovaries are visually counted. The count of these follicles strongly relates to the population of the growing follicle reserve on the ovaries. However, the importance of the main number of antral follicle populations (mAFC) in mono-ovulatory animal species has yet to be completely elucidated. Moreover, the investigation of the ovarian interrelationship with unilateral mAFC (main number of antral follicle populations appearing on only one side of the ovary) and bilateral mAFC (main number of antral follicle populations appearing in equivalent numbers on both sides of the ovary) and how understanding this interrelationship can offer possible indicators of ovarian response to hormonal induction have not yet been investigated in mono-ovulatory Bos indicus beef cows. The aim of this study is to investigate the different ovarian interrelationships of mAFC (unilateral and bilateral mAFC) at the time of exogenous hormonal stimulation on the total number of AFC (left and right ovaries) at the beginning of the hormonal protocol for ovarian stimulation and ovarian response at the completion of exogenous hormonal stimulation as well as their usefulness as possible biomarkers of successful hormonal stimulation in Bos indicus beef cattle. Beef cows (n = 104) with low total numbers of AFC (4.7 ± 2.4 follicles) were stimulated with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone-progesterone-prostaglandin F2α-based protocol. At the beginning of the hormonal protocol, ovarian ultrasound scans were performed to evaluate AFC from both ovaries of cows. Beef cows were divided into two groups, unilateral (n = 74) and bilateral mAFC (n = 30), according to the ovarian interrelationship. At the completion of the hormonal stimulation, ovarian ultrasound scans were performed to evaluate the dominant follicle (DF) and cows with DF > 8.5 mm in diameter emerging on their ovaries were defined as having experienced a response to hormonal stimuli. There was a difference of 19.1% between Bos indicus cows bearing unilateral mAFC that produced an increase in ovarian response (odds ratio = 2.717, p < 0.05) compared to the responsive rate of cows displaying bilateral mAFC (82.4% vs. 63.3%). In unilateral mAFC, cows bearing mAFC ipsilateral to the ovary of dominant follicle (DF) had a higher responsive rate than cows bearing mAFC contralateral to the DF ovary (50.0% vs. 32.4%, p < 0.05). In mAFC ipsilateral to the DF ovary, pregnancy rates were greatest in cows bearing mAFC and DF on the right ovary compared with cows bearing mAFC and DF on the left ovary (25.0% vs. 9.1%, p < 0.05). In primiparous and multiparous cows, unilateral mAFC occurs with a greater (p < 0.05) frequency than bilateral mAFC (69.0% and 72.0% vs. 31.0% and 28.0%, respectively). In unilateral mAFC, primiparous cows bearing mAFC ipsilateral to the DF ovary had a greater responsive rate than primiparous cows bearing mAFC contralateral to the DF ovary (55.0% vs. 20.0%, p < 0.05). In mAFC ipsilateral to the DF ovary, responsive and pregnancy rates were greatest (p < 0.05) in multiparous cows bearing mAFC and DF on the right ovary compared with multiparous cows bearing mAFC and DF on the left ovary (58.1% and 22.6% vs. 25.8% and 3.2%, respectively). Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the mean diameter of AFC at the time of the exogenous hormonal trigger and the mean diameter of DF at the completion of hormonal synchronisation (p < 0.05). Our findings emphasise that the ovarian interrelationship with unilateral mAFC at the time of the hormonal trigger might be a promising biomarker for predicting success in ovarian response to hormonal stimulation of mono-ovulatory Bos indicus beef cows with low AFCs.

Abstract
Information on the follicular population and oocyte quality of cows in the final period of reproductive life is scarce. The present study aimed to compare the antral follicle count (AFC), oocyte production and embryonic developmental competence of young versus long-lived and senescent Bos indicus beef cows. Nellore cows (Bos indicus) were classified into three groups according to age: young (4-9 years, n = 10), long-lived (14-17 years, n = 10) and senescent (17-23 years, n = 10). At a random time in the estrus cycle, the cows received cloprostenol sodium salt (0.5 mg, IM), estradiol benzoate (1 mg, IM) and an intravaginal P4 device (1.4 g). Five days later, the P4 devise was removed and oocyte collection (OPU1) was performed. A second OPU (OPU2) was performed 5 days after the first in order to aspirate only growing follicles. During each OPU, AFC and the number and quality of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were evaluated. Then, the COCs were placed in standard maturation medium (IVM), fertilized and incubated for 9 days. The data were subjected to ANOVA and Multinomial Logistic Regression. The AFC was smaller in long-lived and senescent cows in both OPU1 and OPU2 when compared to younger cows. There was no difference in AFC between OPU1 (19.9 ± 1.8) and OPU2 (17.6 ± 1.9) in young cows, however, more follicles were punctured in long-lived and senescent cows in OPU1 (12.0 ± 2.6 and 19.3 ± 4.6) than in OPU2 (9.2 ± 1.9 and 10.3 ± 2.3), respectively (P < 0.01). The numbers of COCs recovered from young cows (OPU1 = 14.2 ± 1.8; OPU2 = 8.4 ± 0.9) were higher than those obtained from long-lived cows (OPU1 = 5.9 ± 2.3; OPU2 = 4.3 ± 1.0) and senescent cows (OPU1 = 7.2 ± 3.0; OPU2 = 4.1 ± 1.7), respectively (P < 0.05). The cleavage rate did not differ between groups. However, the rate of blastocyst formation was higher for young (64.8%) and long-lived (65.0%) compared to senescent (16.5%) cows (P < 0.01). In conclusion our results indicate that the AFC is lower in long-lived and senescent cows compared with young cows. However, unlike in senescent cows, the embryonic development of long-lived cows is similar to that of young cows. This suggests that Nellore cows aged >17 years begin to have reduced embryonic development capacity due to ovarian aging.

Abstract
Polymorphisms in μ-calpain (CAPN1) that beneficially associate with beef tenderness are reported to antagonistically associate with calving day in beef heifers and post-partum interval to estrus in beef cows. We, therefore, hypothesized that a molecular breeding value for slice shear force, calculated based on CAPN1 and calpastatin (CAST) genotypes, would demonstrate an antagonistic relationship between genomically predicted slice shear force and ordinal calving date in replacement beef heifers. A secondary objective of this study was to evaluate the association of a polymorphism in diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT1) with reproductive traits in beef heifers. One hundred eighty-seven MARC III heifers (¼ Angus, ¼ Hereford, ¼ Red Poll, and ¼ Pinzgauer) that had been selectively bred to increase the frequency of these polymorphisms were submitted for monthly ultrasound exams beginning at 333 d of age and continuing until the start of breeding to determine pubertal status. At the last exam before breeding, all antral follicles were counted, and the length and height of each ovary was measured to determine if genomic selection for slice shear force associated with ovarian follicle number. Calving date, calf gender, and calf birth weight were recorded at parturition. Regression analysis of the molecular breeding value for slice shear force of the heifers on ordinal calving date indicated no association between genomic prediction of tenderness and calving date (P = 0.16); however, there was a tendency for age at puberty to be delayed in heifers as genetic merit for tenderness improved (P = 0.09). The results of the present study indicate that within experimental precision, selecting for tenderness using genomic predictions had minimal or no antagonistic association with reproductive performance in heifers. Further analysis of reproductive performance as cows is needed within this population but applying these genetic markers to select for tenderness in steers does not antagonize reproductive traits influencing conception or first calf birth date and birth weight in replacement beef heifers.

Abstract
Simple Summary During gestation, the fetus relies on the dam for the supply of all nutrients, including trace minerals, which are essential for developmental processes including organogenesis, vascularization, and differentiation. Alterations in maternal nutritional status may promote adaptations that permanently alter the trajectory of growth, physiology, and metabolism of the offspring. Supplementing trace minerals to gestating cows may be a strategy to enhance progeny performance and health. The purpose of this review is to highlight current information relevant to trace mineral supplementation during gestation, with an emphasis on Zn, Cu, Co, and Mn, and their impacts on offspring productive responses. Identifying nutritional strategies targeted at this period of development and understanding the implications of such provides an opportunity to enhance the productive efficiency of beef cattle systems. Abstract Nutritional management during gestation is critical to optimize the efficiency and profitability of beef production systems. Given the essentiality of trace minerals to fetal developmental processes, their supplementation represents one approach to optimize offspring productivity. Our research group investigated the impacts of supplementing gestating beef cows with organic-complexed (AAC) or inorganic sources (INR) of Co, Cu, Mn, or Zn on productive and health responses of the progeny. Calves born to AAC supplemented cows had reduced incidence of bovine respiratory disease and were >20 kg heavier from weaning until slaughter compared to unsupplemented cohorts. Complementing these findings, heifer progeny born to AAC supplemented cows had accelerated puberty attainment. Collectively, research demonstrates supplementing trace minerals to gestating beef cows may be a strategy to enhance offspring productivity in beef production systems.

Abstract
The ability of livestock to reproduce efficiently is critical to the sustainability of animal agriculture. Antral follicle count (AFC) and reproductive tract scores (RTS) can be used to estimate fertility in beef heifers, but the genetic mechanisms influencing variation in these measures are not well understood. Two genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted to identify the significant loci associated with these traits. In total, 293 crossbred beef heifers were genotyped on the Bovine GGP 50K chip and genotypes were imputed to 836,121 markers. A GWAS was performed with the AFC phenotype for 217 heifers with a multi-locus mixed model, conducted using the year, age at time of sampling and principal component analysis groupings as the covariates. The RTS GWAS was performed with 289 heifers using an additive correlation/trend test comparing prepubertal to pubertal heifers. The loci on chromosomes 2, 3 and 23 were significant in the AFC GWAS and the loci on chromosomes 2, 8, 10 and 11 were significant in the RTS GWAS. The significant region on chromosome 2 was similar between both analyses. These regions contained genes associated with cell proliferation, transcription, apoptosis and development. This study proposes candidate genes for beef cattle fertility, although future research is needed to elucidate the precise mechanisms.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to establish if exposure of pregnant dairy cows to high environmental temperatures and humidity during the first trimester of pregnancy impairs the establishment of the ovarian reserve (total number of healthy follicles and oocytes in ovaries) and fertility in their offspring. Serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations and number of follicles ≥3 mm (antral follicle count; AFC) were assessed on a random day of the estrous cycle in 310 sixteen-month-old dairy heifers. Based on season of their conception and early fetal life, heifers were separated into 2 groups: summer (mean monthly temperature-humidity index = 69.33 ± 2.6) and winter (temperature-humidity index = 54.91 ± 1.08). The AMH and AFC were lower in summer (419.27 ± 22.81 pg/mL and 9.32 ± 0.42 follicles, respectively) compared with winter heifers (634.91 ± 47.60 pg/mL and 11.84 ± 0.46 follicles, respectively) and were not influenced by farm and age at sampling. Heifers born to dams that were not being milked during gestation had lower AMH and AFC compared with offspring of cows on their first lactation, whereas no difference was detected between offspring of cows on their first and subsequent lactations. Summer and winter heifers had similar age at first service and at first calving, and similar number of services per conception. Regardless of season in early fetal life, heifers were classified into 3 groups based on AMH and AFC (low = 20%, intermediate = 60%, high = 20%). Heifers with the lowest AMH were older at first service compared with herd mates with intermediate AMH, but age at first calving and number of services per conception were similar among AMH categories. No difference was detected in any of the fertility measures among AFC categories. Heifers born to mothers exposed to high environmental temperatures in early gestation had smaller ovarian reserves compared with herd mates conceived in winter, but no association between season of early fetal life and fertility at first conception was established. Season of conception and maternal lactation status affect the size of the ovarian reserve, but not fertility, at first conception in the progeny.

Abstract
The development of replacement heifers is at the core of cow-calf beef production systems. In 2020, the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service reported 5.771 million beef heifers, 500 pounds and over, are under development for cow replacement. A compilation of data from several studies indicate that between 85% and 95% of these heifers will become pregnant in their first breeding season. Several thousands of heifers being raised for replacement may not deliver a calf on their first breeding season and result in economic losses to cow-calf producers. Many management procedures have been developed to maximize the reproductive potential of beef heifers. Such approaches include, but are not limited to the following: nutritional management for controlled weight gain, identification of reproductive maturity by physiological and morphological indicators, and the implementation of an estrous synchronization program. The implementation of management strategies has important positive impact(s) on the reproductive efficiency of heifers. There are limitations, however, because some heifers deemed ready to enter their first breeding season do not become pregnant. In parallel, genetic selection for fertility-related traits in beef heifers have not promoted major genetic gains on this particular area, most likely due to low heritability of female fertility traits in cattle. Technologies such as antral follicle counting, DNA genotyping and RNA profiling are being investigated as a means to aid in the identification of heifers of low fertility potential. To date, many polymorphisms have been associated with heifer fertility, but no DNA markers have been identified across herds. Antral follicle count is an indication of the ovarian reserve and is an indicator of the reproductive health of a heifer. We have been working on the identification of transcriptome profiles in heifers associated with pregnancy outcome. Our current investigations integrating protein-coding transcript abundance and artificial intelligence have identified the potential for bloodborne transcript abundance to be used as indicators of fertility potential in beef heifers. In summary, there is an ongoing pressure for reducing costs and increasing efficiency in cow-calf production systems, and new technologies can help reduce the long-standing limitations in beef heifer fertility.

Abstract
It was hypothesized that Brahman cows have greater in vitro embryo production than Simmental cows, and that regardless of breed, antral follicle count (AFC) and vulvar width (VW) are positively associated with oocyte quality, embryo number and pregnancy rate. Brahman (Bos taurus indicus, n = 184) and Simmental (Bos taurus taurus, n = 99) cows were classified as having a large AFC (Brahman: ≥50, Simmental: ≥25); intermediate AFC (Brahman: >30 and ≤49; Simmental: >16 and <24) and small AFC (Brahman: <30, Simmental: ≤15). The VW was considered to be large (Brahman: >123 mm, Simmental: >80 mm); intermediate (Brahman: >102 mm and ≤123 mm; Simmental: >65 mm and ≤80 mm) and small (Brahman: ≤102 mm and Simmental: ≤65 mm). For each group of cows, ovum pick up, oocyte in vitro maturation, fertilization and embryo culture were performed. Embryo transfers were subsequently performed and pregnancy rate was evaluated. Brahman cows had a larger number of viable oocytes, greater efficiency of embryo production and greater pregnancy rate (P < 0.05) than Simmental cows. Pregnancy percentages in Simmental cows with a small AFC were greater than those cows with an intermediate and large AFC. With the Brahman cows, there was no difference in pregnancy rate among the cows with different AFC classifications. In contrast to Simmental cows, Brahman cows with an intermediate VW had a greater pregnancy percentage than those with a small and large AFC. In conclusion, Brahman cows have a larger AFC, number of viable oocytes, and pregnancy rate than Simmental cows.

Abstract
Aim The study aimed to determine both macroscopic and microscopic changes in the reproductive organs of sterile cows. Materials and Methods Careful clinical and gynecological examinations (using histological and histochemical methods) of organs of culled sterile cows, such as ovaries, oviducts, the uterus, pars anterior adenohypophysis, thyroid body, and adrenals, were performed. Results It was found that 20% of the examined cows in the farms of the Republic of Bashkortostan had pathology of reproductive organs. Ovarian dysfunction was diagnosed in 31% of sterile cows. Histological and histochemical studies revealed that high atresia of all types of ovarian follicles is associated with hypofunction of the ovaries. This was related to stromal vascular dystrophy and was accompanied by atrophy of thecal endocrine elements, resulting in decrease of endocrine and generative function of ovaries. Conclusion Essential elements of the ovarian dysfunction pathogenesis are disorders of the functional system "ovary-pituitary-adrenal-thyroid gland" and the abnormality of utero-ovarian relationships, which differ significantly during hypofunction, in case of follicular cysts, and in case of persistent corpora lutea. This difference in abnormalities of utero-ovarian relationships should be considered when developing diagnostic and treatment methods and determining preventive measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age and antral follicle count (AFC) are related to fertility in cattle, but this information remains limited in mares. METHODS To verify the influence of age and AFC on the reproductive characteristics of mares, 15 Quarter Horse donors, with 5-15 antral follicles, ranging from three to 17 years old, healthy and in good nutritional status, were divided into groups with low AFC (≤9 follicles) or high AFC (≥10 follicles) and mares considered young (≤9 years) or old (≥10 years). Mares were submitted to ultrasonography to determine the dominant follicle diameter, follicular growth rate, degree of uterine oedema and embryonic recovery for a minimum of three oestrous cycles. RESULTS AFC was higher (P=0.001) in young mares compared with old mares. An interaction (P=0.001) between AFC and age was observed with regard to follicular growth rate, being that mares with low AFC and are old showed the lowest follicular growth compared with those of low AFC and young, high AFC and old, and high AFC and young. Younger mares and those with high AFC exhibited higher degree of uterine oedema (P<0.05) on the third day of oestrus compared with older mares and with low AFC (3 and 2, respectively). However, in both groups, the degree of oedema reduced by the time of ovulation. CONCLUSION Follicular growth rate, degree of uterine oedema and the number of antral follicles are higher in young mares with high AFC. However, the rate of embryonic recovery is not influenced by donors' age or AFC.

Abstract
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a reliable and easily detectable reproductive marker for the fertility competence of many farm animal species. AMH is also a good predictor of superovulation in cattle, sheep, and mares. In this review, we have summarized the recent findings related to AMH and its predictive reliability related to fertility and superovulation in domestic animals, especially in cattle. We focused on: (1) the dynamics of AMH level from infancy to prepubescence as well as during puberty and adulthood; (2) AMH as a predictor of fertility; (3) the association between antral follicle count (AFC) and plasma AMH level; (4) AMH as a predictor of superovulation; and (5) factors affecting AMH levels in domestic animals, especially cattle. Many factors affect the circulatory levels of AMH when considering the plasma, like nutrition, activity of granulosa cells, disease state and endocrine disruptions during fetal life. Briefly, we concluded that AMH concentrations are static within individuals, and collection of a single dose of blood has become more popular in the field of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). It may act as a potential predictor of fertility, superovulation, and ovarian disorders in domestic animals. However, due to the limited research in domestic animals, this potential of AMH remains underutilized.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the effects of maternal subnutrition in early pregnancy on the growth and reproductive performance of female offspring during their rearing, first gestation, and lactation. We inseminated 21 Parda and 15 Pirenaica multiparous cows and assigned them to a CONTROL (100% of nutrition requirements) or SUBNUT (65%) diet until day 82 of gestation. Cows were fed 100% requirements afterward. During the rearing of female offspring, growth, physiological profiles and ovarian follicular dynamic were studied. At 16 months old, heifers were inseminated. After first calving, dam-calf weights were recorded during lactation. Heifers born from CONTROL cows were heavier at weaning (four months old) than heifers born from SUBNUT cows, but this difference disappeared at the end of rearing and during the first gestation and lactation periods. All heifers reached puberty at a similar age and live weight. During rearing, SUBNUT heifers had higher concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids, urea, and cholesterol and a lower antral follicle count than CONTROL, but no difference was found in their fertility rate. After heifer first calving, dam-calf weights were similar among groups. In conclusion, maternal undernutrition reduced offspring postnatal gains at weaning, compromising metabolic status and follicle population during rearing but did not impair performance in the first gestation and lactation periods of beef heifers.

Abstract
Abstract
Follicular progression during peripuberty is affected by diet. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) induces follicle progression in many species; however, there are limited studies to determine if diet may alter the effects of angiogenic VEGFA165-stimulated follicle progression or antiangiogenic VEGFA165b follicle arrest. We hypothesized that diet affects the magnitude of angiogenic and antiangiogenic VEGFA isoform actions on follicular development through diverse signal transduction pathways. To test this hypothesis, beef heifers in our first trial received Stair-Step (restricted and refeeding) or control diets from 8 to 13 months of age. Ovaries were collected to determine follicle stages, measure vascular gene expression and conduct ovarian cortical cultures. Ovarian cortical cultures were treated with phosphate-buffered saline (control), 50 ng/ml VEGFA165, VEGFA165b, or VEGFA165 + VEGFA165b. The Stair-Step heifers had more primordial follicles (P < 0.0001), greater messenger RNA abundance of vascular markers VE-cadherin (P < 0.0001) and NRP-1 (P < 0.0051) than controls at 13 months of age prior to culture. After culture, VEGFA isoforms had similar effects, independent of diet, where VEGFA165 stimulated and VEGFA165b inhibited VEGFA165-stimulated follicle progression from early primary to antral follicle stages. In vitro cultures were treated with VEGFA isoforms and signal transduction array plates were evaluated. VEGFA165 stimulated expression of genes related to cell cycle, cell proliferation, and growth while VEGFA165b inhibited expression of those genes. Thus, VEGFA isoforms can act independently of diet to alter follicle progression or arrest. Furthermore, follicle progression can be stimulated by VEGFA165 and inhibited by VEGFA165b through diverse signal transduction pathways.

Abstract
The mechanism for more frequent ovulation from right ovary (RO) than left ovary (LO) was considered by determining if RO of recently born calves had a propensity for more follicles. Rationale was from reports that RO in heifers has more 6-mm follicles before selection of the future ovulatory follicle as well as greater frequency of RO ovulation. Dimensions, weight, and number of follicles per ovary were compared between LO and RO in 10 Holstein calves (age, 1 to 7 days). Weight of an ovary was greater (P < 0.05) for RO (0.393 ± 0.04 g) than LO (0.355 ± 0.05 g). Follicles were delineated by translucency of follicular fluid from transmitted light. Follicles from 0.3 mm diameter (smallest identified) to 4.8 mm (largest present) were counted. Mean number of translucent antral follicles (8.1 ± 1.8 vs 5.3 ± 1.2 follicles) and means for follicle diameter, fluid volume, and surface area were each greater (P < 0.01) for RO than LO. Combined for all diameters (0.3-4.8 mm), the hypothesis was supported that more follicles are present in RO than LO in calves 1 to 7 days of age. Although follicle activity in the fetus has not been compared between LO and RO, more follicles in RO than LO in recently born calves is consistent with the concept that the propensity for RO ovulation is congenital.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the carryover effects of differing pre- and postweaning planes of nutrition on prepubertal reproductive tract development and postpubertal estrous cycle characteristics in Holstein heifers. Heifer calves (n = 36) were randomly assigned to receive either a low or a high (5 or 10 L of whole milk/d, respectively) preweaning diet from 1 to 7 wk of age and either a low or a high (70 or 85% of concentrate dry total mixed ration, respectively) postweaning diet from 11 to 25 wk of age. Starting at wk 26 of age, heifers were subjected to weekly transrectal ultrasonography until wk 33 or until first ovulation to assess endometrial thickness and ovarian follicular count and size in the prepubertal phase. In a subset of heifers (n = 28), ovarian ultrasonography continued weekly until at least the second ovulation was confirmed; thereafter, ovarian dynamics (through ultrasonography) and blood progesterone (P4) were assessed every 2 d throughout 1 complete estrous cycle in the postpubertal phase. In the prepubertal phase, endometrial thickness (12.0 ± 0.4 vs. 10.8 ± 0.3 mm) and largest follicle size (11.8 ± 0.3 vs. 10.9 ± 0.2 mm) were greater in heifers fed the high postweaning diet than in those fed the low postweaning diet. Furthermore, the number of class 2 (6-9 mm) follicles was greater in heifers fed the high preweaning diet than in those fed the low preweaning diet (1.6 ± 0.1 vs. 1.1 ± 0.1), whereas the number of class 3 (>9 mm) follicles was greater in heifers fed the high postweaning diet than in those fed the low postweaning diet (1.2 ± 0.1 vs. 1.0 ± 0.1). In the postpubertal phase, overall corpus luteum and P4 dynamics did not differ among pre- or postweaning treatments; however, P4 at 4 d preceding luteolysis was lesser in heifers fed the high postweaning diet than in those fed the low postweaning diet (6.1 ± 0.4 vs. 7.7 ± 0.4 ng/mL). In addition, compared with heifers fed the low postweaning diet, those fed the high postweaning diet had a greater number of antral follicles (31.4 ± 2.2 vs. 21.4 ± 2.3) and tended to have more class 3 follicles (3.6 ± 0.3 vs. 2.7 ± 0.3). Results indicate positive carryover effects of increasing the preweaning plane of nutrition from 5 to 10 L of whole milk/d on prepubertal follicular growth in Holstein heifers. Furthermore, an increased postweaning plane of nutrition (85 vs. 70% of concentrate dry total mixed ration) advanced reproductive development through greater endometrial thickness and follicular growth in the prepubertal phase and increased the population of antral follicles in the postpubertal estrous cycle.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize the distribution and variability of plasma anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentration; (2) evaluate factors associated with phenotypic variation in plasma AMH; (3) examine the associations between categories of plasma AMH and reproductive outcomes [pregnancy to first artificial insemination (P/AI), and pregnancy rates within 21, 42, and 84 d after the mating start date (MSD)]; (4) estimate pedigree and genomic heritability for plasma AMH; and (5) identify and validate SNP associated with phenotypic variation in plasma AMH. Plasma AMH concentration (pg/mL) was determined from a blood sample collected (mean ± standard deviation) 10 ± 2 d after first insemination at detected estrus (IDE) in 2,628 first- and second-parity Irish dairy cows. Overall, plasma AMH had a positively skewed distribution with mean (± standard deviation), median, minimum, and maximum concentrations of 326 ± 231, 268, 15, and 2,863 pg/mL, respectively. Plasma AMH was greatest for Jersey, followed by Holstein × Jersey, Holstein × Norwegian Red, and Holstein cows (410, 332, 284, and 257 pg/mL, respectively). Second-parity cows had greater plasma AMH than first-parity cows (333 vs. 301 pg/mL, respectively). Samples collected at 7 and 8 d after first IDE had lesser plasma AMH than those collected on d 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 after first IDE (291 and 297 vs. 317, 319, 331, 337, and 320 pg/mL). Plasma AMH was not associated with either body condition score at first IDE or the interval from calving to MSD. Cows were categorized into low (≤150 pg/mL; n = 526; lowest 20%), intermediate (>150 to ≤461 pg/mL; n = 1,576; intermediate 60%), and high AMH (>461 pg/mL; n = 526; highest 20%) groups based on plasma AMH, and associations with reproductive outcomes were tested. Cows with high and intermediate plasma AMH had 1.42- and 1.51-times-greater odds of becoming pregnant within 84 d after the MSD than those with low plasma AMH (90.3 and 90.8 vs. 86.8%, respectively); however, P/AI and pregnancy rate within 21 and 42 d after the MSD did not differ among AMH categories. Plasma AMH was moderately heritable (pedigree heritability of 0.40 ± 0.06 and genomic heritability of 0.45 ± 0.05), and 68 SNP across Bos taurus autosomes 7 and 11 were associated with phenotypic variation in plasma AMH. Out of 68 SNP, 42 were located in a single quantitative trait locus on Bos taurus autosome 11 that harbored 6 previously identified candidate genes (NR5A1, HSPA5, CRB2, DENND1A, NDUFA8, and PTGS) linked to fertility-related phenotypes in dairy cows.

Abstract
Developmental programming became an area of interest to understand negative environmental impacts on progeny performance. Recently, the concept that we may be able to harness developmental programming to target animals to their niche in the production system has gained recognition. Female fertility is an area where developmental programming has been moderately successful; however, the mechanisms remain unclear. Although some studies have demonstrated differences in gonadal development and attainment of puberty in response to developmental programming, these have not translated to improved fertility. To improve response to developmental programming, it is critical to identify factors that contribute to inconsistencies across studies.

Abstract
An experiment was performed to evaluate the association between the antral follicle count (AFC) plus body condition score (BCS) and the pregnancy rate in Bos indicus undergoing timed artificial insemination (TAI). A total of 736 Nelore cows with BCSs ranging from 2 to 4 received a conventional protocol for TAI. On a random day of the estrous cycle (Day 0), all cows received an intravaginal P4 device and an intramuscular (i.m.) injection of 2.0 mg estradiol benzoate. On Day 8, the P4 device was removed, and 150 μg sodium D-cloprostenol, 300 IU equine chorionic gonadotrophin and 1.0 mg estradiol cypionate were administered by i.m. injection. TAI was performed 48 h after P4 device removal, and pregnancy diagnosis was performed by ultrasonography after 30 days. On Day 0, all cows were examined by ultrasonography to determine the AFC by counting the number of follicles >3 mm in diameter that were present in both ovaries and to evaluate the BCS (scale of 1-5). The cows were then classified based on their AFCs as those with low (≤10 follicles), intermediate (11-29 follicles) and high AFC (≥30 follicles). Furthermore, cows were classified as having low (≥2.0 to ≤ 2.9) and high (≥3.0 to ≤ 4.0) BCSs. The AFCs and BCSs were analyzed using the generalized linear model, and the pregnancy rate was assessed with the binary logistic regression model (P ≤ 0.05). The pregnancy rate was influenced (P < 0.05) by AFC and BCS classification and by interactions (P = 0.034) between these factors. Cows with a low AFC exhibited higher a pregnancy rate than did cows with a high or an intermediate AFC (57.7% a, 47.9% b and 49.7% b, P = 0.008). Low BCS resulted in a higher pregnancy rate than did high BCS (55.2% vs. 50.4%, P = 0.008). Cows with a high BCS and a low AFC had a higher pregnancy rate (P < 0.05) than did those with a high BCS and an intermediate or a high AFC (59.8%a, 48.0%b, and 38.0%b, respectively). An interaction (P < 0.05) was observed between the AFC and BCS, and the pregnancy rate decreased significantly in cows with an AFC > 30 and a BCS between 3 and 4. In conclusion, AFC and BCS classifications influence the pregnancy rate of Bos indicus beef cattle subjected to TAI. In addition, an important interaction between these factors was observed, namely, the lowest pregnancy rates were found in cows with high BCSs and high AFCs.

Abstract
Profitability of beef cattle producers can be directly tied to the productive lifespan of a cow. Management decisions influencing heifer nutrition and reproduction play a key role in establishing heifer fertility and longevity. Altering feeding strategies to utilize compensatory growth has been reported to have a positive influence on fertility during the first breeding season; however, there are discrepancies in the literature as to the impact this strategy may have on the proportion of heifers attaining puberty prior to entering their first breeding season. Ultimately, this may affect lifetime productivity as heifers born early in the calving season produce more kilograms of weaned calf over their first 6 calves, as well as, remain in the herd longer than those animals born later in the calving season. Thus, incorporation of reproductive technologies to identify fertile animals or aid in improving conception earlier in the breeding season may improve heifer reproductive performance and longevity. Reproductive tract scores have been utilized to identify animals which are more reproductively mature, increasing the likelihood of successful artificial insemination. Antral follicle counts (AFC), which predict the number of follicles in the ovarian reserve, have not only been reported to have a moderate to high heritability, but have also been used to identify animals with greater reproductive potential. Beef heifers classified as high AFC have greater pregnancy rates and longevity than low AFC heifers. Additionally, maternal diet may play a role in influencing reproductive success and ultimately cow longevity. Improving maternal plane of nutrition has been reported to increase female offspring pregnancy rates. Overall, recent research has provided producers with a variety of methods to optimize animal performance while enhancing reproductive success and longevity to ensure profitability.

Abstract
The antral follicle count (AFC) is an important tool in the selection of bovine females destined for biotechnology. However, little is known about AFC in prepubertal and pubertal heifers. Some challenges inherent to the physiology of young females must be considered to achieve efficient rates with different procedures, such as ovum pick-up and IVF. This paper covers some important topics about ovarian physiology related to the population of antral follicles and reproductive efficiency in young female cattle.

Abstract
Anovulation is a major cause of infertility, and it is the major leading reproductive disorder in mammalian females. Without ovulation, an oocyte is not released from the ovarian follicle to be fertilized and a corpus luteum is not formed. The corpus luteum formed from the luteinized somatic follicular cells following ovulation, vasculature cells, and immune cells is critical for progesterone production and maintenance of pregnancy. Follicular theca cells differentiate into small luteal cells (SLCs) that produce progesterone in response to luteinizing hormone (LH), and granulosa cells luteinize to become large luteal cells (LLCs) that have a high rate of basal production of progesterone. The formation and function of the corpus luteum rely on the appropriate proliferation and differentiation of both granulosa and theca cells. If any aspect of granulosa or theca cell luteinization is perturbed, then the resulting luteal cell populations (SLC, LLC, vascular, and immune cells) may be reduced and compromise progesterone production. Thus, many factors that affect the differentiation/lineage of the somatic cells and their gene expression profiles can alter the ability of a corpus luteum to produce the progesterone critical for pregnancy. Our laboratory has identified genes that are enriched in somatic follicular cells and luteal cells through gene expression microarray. This work was the first to compare the gene expression profiles of the four somatic cell types involved in the follicle-to-luteal transition and to support previous immunofluorescence data indicating theca cells differentiate into SLCs while granulosa cells become LLCs. Using these data and incorporating knowledge about the ways in which luteinization can go awry, we can extrapolate the impact that alterations in the theca and granulosa cell gene expression profiles and lineages could have on the formation and function of the corpus luteum. While interactions with other cell types such as vascular and immune cells are critical for appropriate corpus luteum function, we are restricting this review to focus on granulosa, theca, and luteal cells and how perturbations such as androgen excess and inflammation may affect their function and fertility.

Abstract
Ovarian reserve in cattle can be predicted by an indicator, the antral follicle count (AFC), which is easily determined via ovarian ultrasonography. However, the repeatability of AFC
measurements in the same individual taken approximately 1 year apart after first parity remains unclear. This study, thus, aimed to clarify the between-lactation repeatability of AFC after
first parity in dairy cows. We measured the AFC of the same individual cows consecutively across both first and second parity, both second and third parity, and both third and fourth parity
in 31, 37, and 26 heads, respectively. The values of the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for the AFCs in first–second and second–third parity cows were more than 0.8, and the value
of the ICC for the AFCs in third–fourth parity cows was significantly lower than that in first–second parity cows (P = 0.01). Subsequently, based on the average number of AFCs measured at
some points from first to third parity, we classified the cows into three tertiles: <11 (low), 11–15 (intermediate), and ≥ 15 (high). We then compared the reproductive performance of the
first through third parity cows among the groups. The hazards of pregnancy by 200 days postpartum were higher in the high group than in the other groups (P < 0.05). Our findings
demonstrate that between-lactation repeatability of AFC from first through third parity in dairy cows is very high, and that cows with an AFC of ≥ 15 have a better reproductive performance
than cows with a low AFC.

Abstract
The number of antral follicles detectable by ultrasonography in heifers is influenced by age of the dam, because daughters of primiparous cows have fewer antral follicles than daughters of mature cows. We, therefore, hypothesized that heifers with primiparous dams would have fewer primordial follicles in their ovaries than heifers born to mature (4+ y) cows. Angus heifers (n = 464) were submitted for ultrasonographic evaluation of antral follicle number at 325, 355, and 385 d of age. Ovaries were collected from a random subset of heifers (n = 79) and processed for histological evaluation to determine number of primordial follicles. A greater percentage of heifers with primiparous dams had a corpus luteum at first ultrasonographic examination; however, a greater percentage of heifers with multiparous dams had ovulated by the start of breeding (P < 0.01). Heifers with primiparous dams had fewer antral follicles detectable by ultrasonography (P < 0.01). Heifers with primparous dams had fewer surface antral follicles on their ovaries (P < 0.01), and the number of primordial follicles per histological section was less for heifers with primiparous dams (P = 0.02). These data indicate that the lesser number of antral follicles detectable by ultrasonography in heifers with primparous dams is due to less ovarian follicle reserves. Selecting replacement heifers from mature dams may result in daughters with greater fertility and reproductive longevity; however, further research is necessary to determine if interactions between size of the ovarian follicle reserve and age at puberty influence fertility and reproductive longevity in replacement heifers.
