Knowledge, Attitude and Associated Factors Toward Ethiopian Abortion Law Among Reproductive Age Women in Bule Hora Town, Southern Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022

Objectives

A woman's health and wellbeing are impacted by illegal abortion since improper procedures can lead to consequences like extreme bleeding, infection, and damage to the reproductive organs and low awareness and attitude toward abortion law is one of the public health problems in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, and attitude, and identify the effect of short birth interval and wealth index on the abortion law among reproductive-age women in Bule Hora town, Southern Oromia, Ethiopia.

Methods

A community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted from June 20 to July 20, 2022. A systematic random sampling technique was carried out to select 402 reproductive-age women. Data was collected by using a structured questionnaire with face-to-face interviews after the tools were pretested. The data was cleaned, coded, and entered into Epidata 3.1 and exported to STATA 14 for analysis. The model goodness of fit was checked using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. Statistical significance is declared at P < .05 and a 95% confidence interval.

Results

The study revealed that 153 (38%) of respondents had good knowledge and 192 (47%) had a favorable attitude toward the Ethiopian abortion law, with a 100% response rate. Women's educational status, having information regarding the criteria of legal abortion services, and short birth intervals as a reason for induced abortion were significantly associated with knowledge. On the other hand, women who attended secondary education and above, have information regarding the criteria of legal abortion services, wealth index middle/average and richer, using the contraceptive method, and short birth interval as a reason for induced abortion were predictors of attitude toward Ethiopian abortion law.

Conclusion

This study shows that knowledge and attitude toward Ethiopian abortion law was not sufficient. So focusing on awareness creation and health education strategies by mobilization of the community to minimize the knowledge and attitude gap is essential.

Necessary but not sufficient: a scoping review of legal accountability for sexual and reproductive health in low-income and middle-income countries

BACKGROUND

This paper is a scoping review of the impact of legal accountability efforts for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), exploring the links between legal accountability strategies and changes in the desired SRHR outcomes.

METHODS

We defined legal accountability as use of the judicial system following state failure to respect, protect or fulfil SRHR as enshrined in national law, as well as individuals' or the state's use of criminal law mechanisms to prevent unwanted behaviour and to provide remedy. We undertook a keyword search in PubMed, Scopus and LexisNexis and then consulted a group of experts to provide guidance regarding further peer-reviewed and grey literature, yielding a total of 191 articles.

RESULTS

The majority of the empirical, peer-reviewed articles identified were regarding abortion law and abortion care availability, followed by violence against women. Most of these articles explore the gaps between law and practice. We identified seven key factors that shape the efficacy of legal accountability efforts, including the ways a law or court decision is formulated, access to courts, the (dis)advantages of criminal law in the given context, cultural norms, politics, state capacity and resources and the potential for further litigation. Many articles explained that use of the judiciary may be necessary to effect change and that the act of claiming rights can empower, but that legal avenues for change can be imperfect tools for justice.

CONCLUSIONS

Legal accountability can be effective as part of a broader, long-term strategy, with due attention to context.

Abortion knowledge, attitudes and experiences among adolescent girls: a review of the literature

Adolescent girls comprise a considerable proportion of annual abortion deaths, worldwide, with 15% of all unsafe abortions taking place among girls under 20 years of age. Despite recent global attention to the health and welfare of adolescent girls, little is known about their abortion experience, particularly of those under the age of 15 years. This review examines existing peer-reviewed and grey literature on abortion-related experiences of adolescent girls, paying particular attention to girls ages 10-14. In December 2019, the authors conducted a comprehensive search of five major online resource databases, using a two-part keyword search strategy for articles from 2003 to 2019. Of the original 3,100+ articles, 1,228 were individually screened and 35 retained for inclusion in the analysis. Findings show that while adolescent girls may have knowledge of abortion in general, they lack specific knowledge of sources of care and delay care-seeking due to the fear of stigma, lack of resources and provider bias. Adolescent girls do not experience higher rates of physical complications compared to older cohorts, but they are at risk of psychosocial harm. For girls ages 10-14, abortion experience may be compounded by pregnancy due to sexual abuse or transactional sex, and they face even more barriers to care than older adolescents in terms of provider bias and lack of agency. Adolescents have unique needs and experiences around abortion, which should be accounted for in programming and advocacy. Adolescent girls need information about safe abortion at an early age and a responsive and stigma-free health system.

Assessment of knowledge on abortion law and factors affecting it among regular undergraduate female students of Ambo University, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, 2018: a cross sectional study

BACKGROUND

Knowledge of abortion law is a key determinant of the utilization of safe abortion services. Neglecting it can lead to high social and economic costs, both immediately and in the future. One of the major reasons for not utilizing the safe abortion by the youth female is inadequate knowledge about the abortion law. Therefore the aim of this study was to assess knowledge on abortion law and associated factors among female regular undergraduate students of Ambo University.

METHODOLOGY

Institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 795 randomly selected undergraduate female students of Ambo University using structured and pre-tested questionnaire from March, 28-May, 18, 2018.The result of the analysis was presented by tables using descriptive frequency percentage and odd ratios. The result was presented using tables. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was done between dependent and independent variables at 95% confident interval and P value < 0.05.

RESULT

Majority (79%) of the study participants were not able to identify all the conditions under which abortion is legally available in Ethiopia. In this study receiving health education on abortion law (AOR = 7.382, 95% CI: (1.118-48.761), knowing where safe abortion can be performed (AOR = 3.116, 95% CI: (1.854-5.239)) and being member of health club in the university (AOR = 2.092, 95% CI:1.256-3.484) were the predictors of abortion law knowlwdge .

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that knowledge of female student's on abortion law is low in the study area. In this study, participates who received health education on abortion law and having involving in the health club at university were found to be the predictors of knowledge on abortion law .
