Abstract
Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a worldwide public health issue for its high prevalence rate and the disability it produces. The consequences of ABI, including cognitive deficits, may impact return to work. This review focuses on the association between executive functions (EFs) and return to work after ABI. A systematic review of the literature between 1998 and 2023 was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The articles were retrieved from the Pubmed, Medline and Web of Science databases. A total of 49 studies were finally selected. Impairments of EF were consistently shown to have a negative impact on return to work after an ABI. There is evidence that specific executive functions and neurobehavioral variables may affect return to work Studies showed a significant theoretical and methodological heterogeneity, representing an important limitation to understand the relation between EFs and work. There is a robust association between EFs and return to work after brain injury. Findings in this systematic review raise the need for further research on the role of specific EF profiles in the process of returning to work after brain damage.

Abstract
The objective of the Australian Traumatic Brain Injury (AUS-TBI) Initiative is to develop a data dictionary to inform data collection and facilitate prediction of outcomes of people who experience moderate-severe TBI in Australia. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence of the association between demographic, injury event, and social characteristics with outcomes, in people with moderate-severe TBI, to identify potentially predictive indicators. Standardized searches were implemented across bibliographic databases to March 31, 2022. English-language reports, excluding case series, which evaluated the association between demographic, injury event, and social characteristics, and any clinical outcome in at least 10 patients with moderate-severe TBI were included. Abstracts and full text records were independently screened by at least two reviewers in Covidence. A pre-defined algorithm was used to assign a judgement of predictive value to each observed association. The review findings were discussed with an expert panel to determine the feasibility of incorporation of routine measurement into standard care. The search strategy retrieved 16,685 records; 867 full-length records were screened, and 111 studies included. Twenty-two predictors of 32 different outcomes were identified; 7 were classified as high-level (age, sex, ethnicity, employment, insurance, education, and living situation at the time of injury). After discussion with an expert consensus group, 15 were recommended for inclusion in the data dictionary. This review identified numerous predictors capable of enabling early identification of those at risk for poor outcomes and improved personalization of care through inclusion in routine data collection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To translate and evaluate the validity of the Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools-Objective (PART-O) in a Norwegian context. METHODS One hundred and twenty persons with TBI with verified intracranial lesions and persistent symptoms lasting more than 2 years, included in a randomized controlled trial, rated their participation using the PART-O at baseline. The PART-O with its three subscales (Productivity, Out and About, and Social Relations) was translated to Norwegian. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, Rasch analysis, and correlation analysis were applied. RESULTS The Rasch analysis indicated a unidimensional construct of PART-O and its subscales (χ2 < 12.69, p > 0.28). The internal consistency was moderate (Cronbach's alpha 0.48-0.52) and there was a need to reduce scaling options for most of the items. The Out and About and Productivity subscales had considerable floor effects. PART-O showed moderate positive correlation to TBI-related quality of life and global functioning. CONCLUSIONS PART-O and its subscales reflect unidimensional aspects of participation. In the present Norwegian TBI population the original scaling of PART-O was too detailed for all subscales. The floor effects and suboptimal targeting between items and subjects participation level of the Out and About subscale is a matter of concern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Latin America experience high levels of disability and extremely poor functional outcomes, and their informal caregivers play a key role in their rehabilitation and care. OBJECTIVE To improve TBI rehabilitation through stronger informal caregiving, this study developed and evaluated an evidence-based and culturally appropriate Transition Assistance Program (TAP) for informal caregivers of individuals with TBI in Latin America, specifically targeting the time period before and after the transition from hospital to home. METHODS A sample of 89 people with a new TBI and their primary informal caregiver (n = 178) was recruited from two hospitals in Mexico City, Mexico, and in Cali, Colombia. Caregivers were randomly assigned to either the TAP group or to a control group receiving the standard care provided by the hospital. Caregivers completed measures of depression and burden, and individuals with TBI completed measures of depression and self-perceived burden on caregivers before hospital discharge and at 2- and 4-month follow ups. RESULTS Caregivers in the TAP group reported significantly lower burden than those in the control group and marginally lower depression. Individuals with TBI whose caregivers had been in the TAP group reported significantly lower depression than those whose caregivers had been in the control group, and a non-significant but lower self-perceived burden on their caregivers. CONCLUSION The results suggest that the TAP has strong potential to benefit both TBI caregivers and individuals with TBI during the transition from acute TBI hospitalization to home in Latin America, generally showing small-or medium-sized effects on key outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine prognostic factors for work ability and employment/educational status among young patients referred to outpatient neurorehabilitation clinics after an acquired brain injury. METHODS A nationwide cohort study of 471 15-30-year-old patients who attended an interdisciplinary clinical assessment and provided questionnaire data at baseline and after one year. The outcomes were the Work Ability Score (WAS, 0-10 (best)) and employment/educational status after one year. Prognostic performance was analyzed using univariable regression and multivariable Ridge regression in a five-fold cross-validated procedure. RESULTS Preinjury, 86% of the patients were employed, while the percentage had decreased to 55% at baseline and 52% at follow-up. The model, which included clinical measures of function, showed moderate prognostic performance with respect to WAS (R2=0.29) and employment/educational status (area under the curve (AUC)=0.77). Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (R2=0.15, AUC=0.68) and the cognitive subscale of the Functional Independence Measure (R2=0.09, AUC=0.64), along with fatigue measured with the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (R2=0.15, AUC=0.60) were the single predictors with the highest predictive performance. CONCLUSION Despite generally high scores in motor and cognitive tests, only about half of the patients were employed at baseline and this proportion remained stable. Global disability, cognitive sequelae and fatigue had the highest prognostic performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To understand the experience of employers of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who have received comprehensive vocational rehabilitation (VR), the factors involved in supporting an individual with TBI to return to work (RTW), and the support needs of employers. METHODS 12 employers completed semi-structured interviews, which were recorded, transcribed, and analysed thematically. RESULTS Five main themes were identified: challenges and impact on employer, managing employee post-injury changes, looking after employee wellbeing, managing conflicting emotions, and utilizing sources of support. Although employers received support with operational challenges, findings suggest they were not prepared for the emotional journey. While they struggled to support employees through the difficult process of realizing they could no longer perform at their pre-injury level, employers strove to find appropriate roles and ensure wellbeing for their injured employees. Despite employers' endeavours, they felt this process was demoralizing for some employees. CONCLUSIONS Advising employers on operational as well as emotional support needs of both employees and employers is an ongoing challenge for VR providers. Although unsupportive employers were not well-represented in this sample, the study highlights the challenges faced and strategies used by employers who have a strong personal investment in the successful RTW of their employees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Employment is associated with greater quality of life (QOL) for people with disabilities. Yet, for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), the benefits of work are not often realized given high rates of unemployment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the unique impact of psychosocial variables and employment status (working vs. not working) on self-reported QOL among adults with TBI. METHODS: Participants included 116 adults with TBI between the ages of 18-65, recruited through state brain injury associations in the United States to complete an anonymous online survey. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to examine the incremental impact of psychosocial variables (sense of community, social support, social network, and problem-solving confidence) and employment status on QOL controlling for age and symptom severity. RESULTS: In the final model, employment status, informal and formal support network ties, problem-solving confidence, sense of community, and emotional support explained 59% of the variance in QOL, which is considered a large effect size. Employment status uniquely explained 5% of the variance in QOL. CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the positive benefits of work for adults with TBI. Rehabilitation services that emphasize vocational considerations and employment supports are needed to impact work status and ultimately QOL for individuals with TBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe trajectories of functioning up to 5 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI) that required inpatient rehabilitation in the United States using individual growth curve models conditioned on factors associated with variability in functioning and independence over time. DESIGN Secondary analysis of population-weighted data from a multicenter longitudinal cohort study. SETTING Acute inpatient rehabilitation facilities. PARTICIPANTS A total of 4624 individuals 16 years and older with a primary diagnosis of TBI. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Ratings of global disability and supervision needs as reported by participants or proxy during follow-up telephone interviews at 1, 2, and 5 years postinjury. RESULTS Many TBI survivors experience functional improvement through 1 and 2 years postinjury, followed by a decline in functioning and decreased independence by 5 years. However, there was considerable heterogeneity in outcomes across individuals. Factors such as older age, non-White race, lower preinjury productivity, public payer source, longer length of inpatient rehabilitation stay, and lower discharge functional status were found to negatively impact trajectories of change over time. CONCLUSIONS These findings can inform the content, timing, and target recipients of interventions designed to maximize functional independence after TBI.

The purpose of this research is to estimate the job opportunities of people with disabilities in Chile. For this, the data from the second Chilean national disability study were used to make a Multinomial Logistic Regression Model that would help to predict the probability of certain variables that influence job opportunity. For the generated model, variables related to the additional income of people (subsidies or extra income), educational level attained, pursuit of studies, and the degree of disability itself were found. It was determined how some variables affect the employment opportunity, particularly, variables related to continuity and access to studies.

Abstract
Background: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) classification is a biopsychosocial frame of reference that contributes to a holistic understanding of the functioning of a client and the factors involved. Personal factors (PFs) are not currently classified in the ICF due to large societal and cultural diversity and lack of clarity in the scope of such factors. Aims: To ascertain which factors in the ICF classification have been defined as PFs in different studies and what conclusions have been drawn on their role in the ICF classification. Methods: The study was a scoping review. A systematic search for articles published in 2010–2020 was performed on the Cinahl, Pubmed, ScienceDirect, and Sport Discus databases. The PFs specified in the articles were classified according to the seven categories proposed by Geyh et al. socio-demographic factors; position in the immediate social and physical context; personal history and biography; feelings; thoughts and beliefs; motives; and general patterns of experience and behavior. Results: The search yielded 1,988 studies, of which 226 met the inclusion criteria. The studies had addressed a wide variety of PFs that were linked to all seven categories defined by Geyh et al. Some studies had also defined PFs that were linkable to other components of the ICF or that did not describe functioning. Approximately 22% (51) of the studies discussed the role of PFs in rehabilitation. Conclusions: The range of PFs in the ICF classification addressed in the reviewed studies is wide. PFs play an important role in rehabilitation. However, according to the reviewed studies, a more precise coding of PFs is not yet warranted.

Abstract
Introduction The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) ApproachTM is a leading approach in occupational therapy. Implementing the CO-OP ApproachTM in a group format in day rehabilitation has not yet been explored. Method In day rehabilitation, a barrier to implementing the CO-OP ApproachTM is the group model. To address these challenges, this feasibility study involved the development, implementation, and evaluation of a CO-OP group for adults. Four patients participated in six group sessions. Pre- and post-measures included the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS). Subjective data were collected to reflect the participant’s experiences during the group. Results 80% of participants recruited completed the group. All participants demonstrated improvement in goals addressed within the group and goals not addressed within the group on the COPM. AMPS findings were inconclusive. Subjective findings indicated participants appreciated the group learning environment, valued the CO-OP process, were motivated to participate, and would have liked more groups. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first adult CO-OP group in a clinical setting. Results support the feasibility of a CO-OP group in day rehabilitation and the need for further examination of the effectiveness of this intervention.

Vocational Outcomes After Traumatic Brain Injury; Prevalence and Risk Factors After 1 Year in a Multivariable Model. J Head Trauma Rehabil 2021; 37:104-113. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of employment status (ES) or full-time study after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a representative population and its predictive factors. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Regional Major Trauma Centre. Participants: In total, 1734 consecutive individuals of working age, admitted with TBI to a Regional Trauma Centre, were recruited and followed up at 8 weeks and 1 year with face-to-face interview. Median age was 37.2 years (17.5-58.2); 51% had mild TBI, and 36.8% had a normal computed tomographic (CT) scan. Main Outcome Measure: Complete or partial/modified return to employment or study as an ordinal variable. RESULTS At 1 year, only 44.9% returned to full-time work/study status, 28.7% had a partial or modified return, and 26.4% had no return at all. In comparison with status at 6 weeks, 9.9% had lower or reduced work status. Lower ES was associated with greater injury severity, more CT scan abnormality, older age, mechanism of assault, and presence of depression, alcohol intoxication, or a psychiatric history. The multivariable model was highly significant (P < .001) and had a Nagelkerke R2 of 0.353 (35.3%). CONCLUSIONS Employment at 1 year is poor and changes in work status are frequent, occurring in both directions. While associations with certain features may allow targeting of vulnerable individuals in future, the majority of model variance remains unexplained and requires further investigation.

Abstract
Many patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have persistent cognitive deficits, including decreased attention and working memory. This preliminary study examined fMRI data from a clinical trial implementing a 4-week virtual reality driving intervention to assess how sustained training can improve deficits related to traumatic brain injury. Previously-reported behavioral findings showed improvements in working memory and processing speed in those who received the intervention; this report explores the brain bases of these effects by comparing neural activity related to working memory (n-back task) and resting state connectivity before and after the intervention. In the baseline visit (n = 24), working memory activity was prominent in bilateral DLPFC and prefrontal cortex, anterior insula, medial superior frontal gyrus, left thalamus, bilateral supramarginal / angular gyrus, precuneus, and left posterior middle temporal gyrus. Following intervention, participants showed less global activation on the n-back task, with regions of activity only in the bilateral middle frontal cortex, posterior middle frontal gyrus, and supramarginal gyrus. Activity related to working memory load was reduced for the group that went through the intervention (n = 7) compared to the waitlist control group (n = 4). These results suggest that successful cognitive rehabilitation of working memory in TBI may be associated with increased efficiency of brain networks, evidenced by reduced activation of brain activity during cognitive processing. These results highlight the importance of examining brain activity related to cognitive rehabilitation of attention and working memory after brain injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Characterize relationships among substance misuse, depression, employment, and suicidal ideation (SI) following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Inpatient rehabilitation centers with telephone follow-up; level I/II trauma centers in the United States. PARTICIPANTS Individuals with moderate to severe TBI with data in both the National Trauma Data Bank and the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems National Database, aged 18 to 59 years, with SI data at year 1 or year 2 postinjury (N = 1377). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Primary outcome of SI, with secondary employment, substance misuse, and depression outcomes at years 1 and 2 postinjury. RESULTS Cross-lagged structural equation modeling analysis showed that year 1 unemployment and substance misuse were associated with a higher prevalence of year 1 depression. Depression was associated with concurrent SI at years 1 and 2. Older adults and women had a greater likelihood of year 1 depression. More severe overall injury (injury severity score) was associated with a greater likelihood of year 1 SI, and year 1 SI was associated with a greater likelihood of year 2 SI. CONCLUSIONS Substance misuse, unemployment, depression, and greater extracranial injury burden independently contributed to year 1 SI; in turn, year 1 SI and year 2 depression contributed to year 2 SI. Older age and female sex were associated with year 1 depression. Understanding and mitigating these risk factors are crucial for effectively managing post-TBI SI to prevent postinjury suicide.

Abstract
This study examined if acquiring a traumatic brain injury (TBI) increases utilization of health care costs, increases risk of job loss for the patient and the closest relatives, and increases the risk of divorce 1 to 5 years following the injury. The study was conducted as a Danish national population-based register study with follow-up. Participants included a cohort of patients with TBI (n = 18,328) admitted to a hospital or treated in an emergency room (ER) and a matching control group (n = 89,155). For both the TBI group and the matching controls, relatives were identified, using national registers (TBI relatives: n = 25,708 and control relatives: n = 135,325). The outcome measures were utilization of health care costs (including hospital services, use of general practitioner and practicing specialists, and prescribed medication), risk of job loss, and risk of divorce among the TBI group and the control group and their relatives. Patients with TBI had significantly increased health care costs at baseline (i.e., the year before the injury) and during the following 4 years. Further, TBI relatives had a significantly higher utilization of health care costs the first and the third year after injury. The TBI group had a significant increased risk of job loss (odds ratio [OR] = 2.88; confidence interval [CI]: 2.70-3.07) and divorce (OR = 1.44; CI: 1.27-1.64) during the first 3 years following injury. In conclusion, the TBI group had significantly higher utilization of health care costs, both pre-morbidly and post-injury. Further, increased risk of job loss and divorce were found, emphasizing that the socioeconomic consequences of TBI last for years post-injury.

Abstract
Aims: Knowledge regarding the most effective return to work (RTW) approaches after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is lacking. This trial aimed to compare the effectiveness of a combined cognitive and vocational intervention to treatment as usual (TAU) on RTW and work stability after TBI. Methods: We performed a parallel-group randomized controlled trial (RCT) at a TBI outpatient clinic at Oslo University Hospital (OUH), Norway. Patients with a history of mild-to-moderate TBI (n = 116) aged 18–60 were randomized (1:1) by an independent investigator to receive group-based compensatory cognitive training (CCT) and supported employment (SE) (n = 60) or TAU consisting of individualized multidisciplinary treatment (n = 56). Participants were enrolled 2–3 months post-injury. The nature of the intervention prevented blinding of patients and therapists, however, outcome assessors were blinded to group allocation. The primary outcome measure was RTW at 3 and 6 months following study inclusion. Secondary outcomes were work percentage, stability, and productivity. The present study provides results from an interim analysis from the first two planned follow ups, while subsequent publications will present results up to 12 months following study inclusion. Results: Mixed effects models showed no between-group differences in the RTW proportion, work percentage, and hours worked between CCT-SE and TAU from baseline to 6 months. A significantly higher proportion of participants in CCT-SE had returned to work at 3 months when adjusting for baseline differences. The majority of participants who were employed at 3 and 6 months were stably employed. There was a statistically significant within-group improvement on RTW proportion, hours worked and work percentage in both groups. Conclusion: The results revealed no difference between CCT-SE and TAU on work-related outcomes from baseline to 6 months. However, there was a higher RTW proportion in the CCT-SE group compared to TAU at 3 months. Future publications will assess the effectiveness of CCT-SE vs. TAU up to 12 months. Abstract
Sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) often affects the individual’s ability to work, reducing employment rates post-injury across all severities of TBI. The objective of this multi-country study was to assess the most relevant early predictors of employment status in individuals after TBI at one-year post-injury in European countries. Using a prospective longitudinal non-randomized observational cohort (The Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI (CENTER-TBI) project), data was collected between December 2014–2019 from 63 trauma centers in 18 European countries. The 1015 individuals who took part in this study were potential labor market participants, admitted to a hospital and enrolled within 24 h of injury with a clinical TBI diagnosis and indication for a computed tomography (CT) scan, and followed up at one year. Results from a binomial logistic regression showed that older age, status of part-time employment or unemployment at time of injury, premorbid psychiatric problems, and higher injury severity (as measured with higher Injury severity score (ISS), lower Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and longer length of stay (LOS) in hospital) were associated with higher unemployment probability at one-year after injury. The study strengthens evidence for age, employment at time of injury, premorbid psychiatric problems, ISS, GCS, and LOS as important predictors for employment status one-year post-TBI across Europe.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the interrelationship of postinjury employment and substance abuse (SA) among individuals with traumatic brain injury. DESIGN Structural equation model (SEM) and logistic regression analytic approach using a merged database of the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) and Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) National Database, with acute care and rehabilitation hospitalization data and 1, 2, and 5 year follow-up data. SETTING United States Level I/II trauma centers and inpatient rehabilitation centers with telephone follow-up. PARTICIPANTS Individuals in the TBIMS National Database successfully matched to their NTDB data, aged 18-59 years, with trauma severity, age, sex, employment, and SA data at 1, 2, and/or 5 years postinjury (N=2890). INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Employment status (employed/unemployed) and SA (present/absent) at year 1, year 2, and year 5 postinjury. RESULTS SEM analysis showed older age at injury predicted lower likelihood of employment at all time points postinjury (βYR1=-0.016; βYR2=-0.006; βYR5=-0.016; all P<.001), while higher injury severity score (ISS) predicted lower likelihood of employment (β=-0.008; P=.027) and SA (β=-0.007; P=.050) at year 1. Male sex predicted higher likelihood of SA at each follow-up (βYR1=0.227; βYR2=0.184; βYR5=0.161; all P<.100). Despite associations of preinjury unemployment with higher preinjury SA, postinjury employment at year 1 predicted SA at year 2 (β=0.118; P=.028). Employment and SA during the previous follow-up period predicted subsequent employment and SA, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Employment and SA have unique longitudinal interrelationships and are additionally influenced by age, sex, and ISS. The present work suggests the need for more research on causal, confounding, and mediating factors and appropriate screening and intervention tools that minimize SA and facilitate successful employment-related outcomes.

Relationship Between Hispanic Nativity, Residential Environment, and Productive Activity Among Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury: A TBI Model Systems Study. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the influence of nativity and residential characteristics on productive activity among Hispanics at 1 year after traumatic brain injury (TBI). SETTING Acute rehabilitation facilities and community follow-up. PARTICIPANTS A total of 706 Hispanic individuals in the TBI Model Systems National Database. DESIGN Secondary data analysis from a multicenter longitudinal cohort study. MAIN MEASURES Nativity (foreign born or US native), productive activity derived from interview questions regarding employment status, and other demographic information. Census data were extracted by zip code to represent residential characteristics of aggregate household income and proportion of foreign language speakers (FLS). RESULTS Among foreign-born individuals with TBI, those living in an area with a higher proportion of FLS were 2.8 times more likely to be productive than those living in areas with a lower proportion of FLS. Among individuals living in an area with a lower proportion of FLS, US-born Hispanics were 2.7 times more likely to be productive compared with Hispanic immigrants. CONCLUSION The relationship between nativity and productive activity at 1 year post-TBI was moderated by the residential proportion of FLS. Findings underscore the importance of considering environmental factors when designing vocational rehabilitation interventions for Hispanics after TBI.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate person-related, injury-related, activity-related and rehabilitation-related risk markers for not return to work among patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). Methods Retrospective data from the Quality register, WebRehab Sweden, on an ABI cohort of 2008 patients, was divided into two groups: those who had returned to work (n = 690) and those who had not returned to work (n = 1318) within a year of the injury. Results Risk ratio analyses showed that several factors were risk markers for not returning to work: personal factors, including being a woman, being born outside of Sweden, having a low education level, and not having children in the household; injury-related factors, including long hospital stay (over 2 months), aphasia, low motor function, low cognitive function, high pain/discomfort, and high anxiety/depression; activity-related factors, including low function in self-care, inability to perform usual activities, and not having a driver's license; and rehabilitation-related factors, including being dissatisfied with the rehabilitation process and the attentiveness of the staff having limited influence over the rehabilitation plan, or not having a rehabilitation plan at all. Conclusion Several factors in different aspects of life were risk markers for not returning to work among patients with ABI. This suggests that rehabilitation and interventions need to address not only direct injury-related issues, but also person-related, activity-related, and rehabilitation-related factors in order to increase the patient's opportunities to return to work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of our study was to develop a Structured Work Task application for the Assessment of Work Performance for patients with attention deficits. MATERIAL AND METHODS We developed a computer-based registration task titled the Attention-demanding Registration Task. It had a structured administrative procedure with additional scoring regarding time and accuracy, also linked to the original scoring of the Assessment of Work Performance. We evaluated the Attention-demanding Registration Task for content validity. Furthermore, we investigated it concerning sensitivity and specificity in patients with attention deficits due to acquired brain injury (n = 65) against a comparison group of healthy people (n = 47). RESULTS Our investigation on content validity using the Assessment of Work Characteristics confirmed that the Attention-demanding Registration Task sets high demands on process skills, especially on energy, temporal organization, and adaptation. The Attention-demanding Registration Task showed high sensitivity and specificity in differing between patients with attention deficits and a healthy working group; nine out of ten participants were placed in the correct group. CONCLUSIONS To assess work performance, the use of a Structured Work Task application, the Attention-demanding Registration Task, linked with the Assessment of Work Performance, proved to be sensitive to attention deficits.Implications for rehabilitationA Structured Work Task application for the Assessment of Work Performance was developed for use in people with attention deficits and showing a high degree of sensitivity and specificity.Linking performance time and accuracy to the Assessment of Work Performance scoring and providing a guide for linking task performance to the Assessment of Work Performance skills in addition to the usual observations performed, may increase scoring accuracy.Reference data for a comparison group of healthy subjects are provided.The use of the Attention demanding Registration Task, while using the Assessment of Work Performance within clinical practice ensures a more accurate description of process skills in performance.

Abstract
Background: Returning to employment following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) is critical for a survivor's well-being, yet currently there are no systematic reviews that comprehensively describe employment outcomes following msTBI. The objective of this study was to systematically synthesize literature on employment outcomes following msTBI.Methods: Original studies published through April 2018 on MEDLINE/PubMed, PsychINFO, and CINAHL were eligible if the objective was to investigate employment outcomes following msTBI; outcome was measured ≥1 year; participants were ≥15; and size was ≥60. Post-injury employment prevalence and return to pre-injury level of work were summarized through meta-analysis.Results: Of 38 eligible studies, post-injury employment prevalence was most often reported (n = 35), followed by job stability (n = 6), and return to pre-injury level of work (n = 4). Overall post-injury employment prevalence was 42.2%; whereas the return-to-previous-work prevalence was 33.0%. Post-injury employment prevalence appeared to increase over time, from 34.9% at 1 year to 42.1% up to 5 years and 49.9% beyond 5 years.Conclusion: Nearly half of individuals with msTBI were employed post-injury, yet only a third returned to pre-injury level of work. Future researchers are recommended to standardize employment outcome measures to enable better comparison of outcomes across studies.

Abstract
For most individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), the ability to work is crucial to financial and psychological well-being. TBI produces a wide range of cognitive, physical, emotional, and interpersonal impairments that may undermine the ability to work. Employment is therefore a primary goal of TBI rehabilitation and has been the focus of extensive research. Although this literature has identified predictors of employment outcomes, few studies have examined the mechanisms that underlie these associations. Mediation analysis can identify these mechanisms, provide a more nuanced view of how predictors jointly affect rehabilitation outcomes, and identify predictors that, if treatable conditions, could be useful targets for tertiary prevention. Such efforts are aimed at reducing long-term impairments, disability, or suffering resulting from the injury. The study sample comprised 83 U.S. military veterans with TBI who had participated in a larger rehabilitation study and were interviewed in their homes. Bivariate tests revealed significant associations of employment with pain, cognitive functioning, self-rated health, depressive symptoms and physical functioning; the latter variable was operationalized in two ways—using the Patient Competency Rating Scale and the SF–36V physical functioning subscales. Because these physical functioning measures were highly intercorrelated (r = 0.69, p < 0.0001), separate regression models were conducted. In the hierarchical binary logistic regression models, predictors were entered in order of modifiability, with comorbidities (pain) entered in block 1, physical health/functioning sequelae in block 2, and depressive symptoms in block 3. In the regression using the SF-36V measure of physical functioning, pain's effect was mediated by the physical functioning/health predictors, with only physical functioning emerging as significant, but this effect was itself mediated by depressive symptoms. In the regression using the PCRS physical-function measure, only depressive symptoms emerged as a mediator of other effects. Findings underscore the central role of depression in the employment status of veterans with TBI, suggesting that negative effects of other problems/limitations could be mitigated by more effective treatment of depression. Thus, for many with chronic TBI who live with vocational limitations, outcomes may improve with lower depression. Findings argue for the wider use of mediation approaches in TBI research as a means of identifying targets for tertiary prevention of poor outcomes.

Abstract
Aims: Based on important predictors, global functional outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) may vary significantly over time. This study sought to: (1) describe changes in the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOSE) score in survivors of moderate to severe TBI, (2) examine longitudinal GOSE trajectories up to 10 years after injury, and (3) investigate predictors of these trajectories based on socio-demographic and injury characteristics. Methods: Socio-demographic and injury characteristics of 97 TBI survivors aged 16-55 years were recorded at baseline. GOSE was used as a measure of TBI-related global outcome and assessed at 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-year follow-ups. Hierarchical linear models were used to examine global outcomes over time and whether those outcomes could be predicted by: time, time*time, sex, age, partner relationship status, education, employment pre-injury, occupation, cause of injury, acute Glasgow Coma Scale score, length of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), CT findings, and Injury Severity Score (ISS), as well as the interactions between each of the significant predictors and time*time. Results: Between 5- and 10-year follow-ups, 37% had deteriorated, 7% had improved, and 56% showed no change in global outcome. Better GOSE trajectories were predicted by male gender (p = 0.013), younger age (p = 0.012), employment at admission (p = 0.012), white collar occupation (p = 0.014), and shorter PTA length (p = 0.001). The time*time*occupation type interaction effect (p = 0.001) identified different trajectory slopes between survivors in white and blue collar occupations. The time*time*PTA interaction effect (p = 0.023) identified a more marked increase and subsequent decrease in functional level among survivors with longer PTA duration. Conclusion: A larger proportion of survivors experienced deterioration in GOSE scores over time, supporting the concept of TBI as a chronic health condition. Younger age, pre-injury employment, and shorter PTA duration are important prognostic factors for better long-term global outcomes, supporting the existing literature, whereas male gender and white collar occupation are vaguer as prognostic factors. This information suggests that more intensive and tailored rehabilitation programs may be required to counteract a negative global outcome development in survivors with predicted worse outcome and to meet their long-term changing needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) technology may provide an effective means to integrate cognitive and functional approaches to TBI rehabilitation. However, little is known about the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation for TBI-related cognitive deficits. In response to these clinical and research gaps, we developed Neurocognitive Driving Rehabilitation in Virtual Environments (NeuroDRIVE), an intervention designed to improve cognitive performance, driving safety, and neurobehavioral symptoms. OBJECTIVE This pilot clinical trial was conducted to examine feasibility and preliminary efficacy of NeuroDRIVE for rehabilitation of chronic TBI. METHODS Eleven participants who received the intervention were compared to six wait-listed participants on driving abilities, cognitive performance, and neurobehavioral symptoms. RESULTS The NeuroDRIVE intervention was associated with significant improvements in working memory and visual search/selective attention- two cognitive skills that represented a primary focus of the intervention. By comparison, no significant changes were observed in untrained cognitive areas, neurobehavioral symptoms, or driving skills. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that immersive virtual environments can provide a valuable and engaging means to achieve some cognitive rehabilitation goals, particularly when these goals are closely matched to the VR training exercises. However, additional research is needed to augment our understanding of rehabilitation for driving skills, cognitive performance, and neurobehavioral symptoms in chronic TBI.

Abstract
Aims: To examine trajectories of employment probability up to 10 years following moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and identify significant predictors from baseline socio-demographic and injury characteristics. Methods: A longitudinal observational study followed 97 individuals with moderate-to-severe TBI for their employment status up to 10 years post injury. Participants were enrolled at the Trauma Referral Center in South-Eastern Norway between 2005 and 2007. Socio-demographic and injury characteristics were recorded at baseline. Employment outcomes were assessed at 1, 2, 5, and 10 years. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to examine employment status over time and assess the predictors of time, gender, age, relationship status, education, employment pre-injury, occupation, cause of injury, acute Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), CT findings, and injury severity score, as well as the interaction terms between significant predictors and time. Results: The linear trajectory of employment probabilities for the full sample remained at ~50% across 1, 2, 5, and 10-years post-injury. Gender (p = 0.016), relationship status (p = 0.002), employment (p < 0.001) and occupational status at injury (p = 0.005), and GCS (p = 0.006) yielded statistically significant effects on employment probability trajectories. Male gender, those in a partnered relationship at the time of injury, individuals who had been employed at the time of injury, those in a white-collar profession, and participants with a higher acute GCS score had significantly higher overall employment probability trajectories across the four time points. The time*gender interaction term was statistically significant (p = 0.002), suggesting that employment probabilities remained fairly stable over time for men, but showed a downward trend for women. The time*employment at injury interaction term was statistically significant (p = 0.003), suggesting that employment probabilities were fairly level over time for those who were employed at injury, but showed an upward trend over time for those who had been unemployed at injury. Conclusion: Overall employment probability trajectories remained relatively stable between 1 and 10 years. Baseline socio-demographic and injury characteristics were predictive of employment trajectories. Regular follow-up is recommended for patients at risk of long-term unemployment.

Abstract
Injuries sustained from traumatic brain injury (TBI) culminate in both cognitive and neuromuscular deficits. Patients often progress to higher functioning on the Rancho continuum even while mobility deficits persist. Although prior studies have examined physical performance among persons with chronic symptoms of TBI, less is known about the relatively acute phase of TBI as patients prepare for rehabilitation discharge. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to (a) compare balance and gait performance in 20 ambulant persons with moderate to severe TBI who were nearing rehabilitation discharge with their age-matched controls and (b) describe performance with thresholds for fall risk and community navigation. During a designed task circuit, 40 participants (20 persons with TBI and 20 controls) performed the Timed Up and Go (TUG), gait velocity, and Walking and Remembering tests. Balance testing included the Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale (FABS) and instrumented Modified Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance (MCTSIB). Statistical analyses included analysis of covariance for group comparisons and a multivariate analysis of covariance for MCTSIB sway velocities with anthropometric controls. The TBI group (mean [ M] age = 42, standard deviation [ SD] =19.5 years; 70% males) performed significantly more poorly on all mobility tests ( p < .05) and their scores reflected a potential fall risk. Gait velocity was significantly slower for the TBI versus control group ( M = .96, SD = 2.6 vs. M = 1.5, SD = 2.2 m/s; p < .001), including TUG times ( M = 13.5, SD = 4.9 vs. M = 7.7, SD = 1.4; p < .001). TBI participants also demonstrated significantly greater sway velocity on all MCTSIB conditions ( p < .01) and lower performance on the FABS ( p < .001). Performance indices indicate potential fall risk and community navigation compromise for individuals with moderate to severe TBI. Physical performance scores support the need for continued interventions to optimize functional mobility upon discharge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the acceptability of peer mentoring for people with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in New Zealand. DESIGN This is a qualitative descriptive study exploring the experiences reported by mentees and mentors taking part in a feasibility study of peer mentoring. Interviews with five mentees and six mentors were carried out. Data were analysed using conventional content analysis. SETTING The first mentoring session took place predischarge from the rehabilitation unit. The remaining five sessions took place in mentees' homes or community as preferred. PARTICIPANTS Twelve people with TBI took part: six mentees (with moderate to severe TBI; aged 18-46) paired with six mentors (moderate to severe TBI >12 months previously; aged 21-59). Pairing occurred before mentee discharge from postacute inpatient brain injury rehabilitation. Mentors had been discharged from rehabilitation following a TBI between 1 and 5 years previously. INTERVENTION The peer mentoring programme consisted of up to six face-to-face sessions between a mentee and a mentor over a 6-month period. The sessions focused on building rapport, exploring hopes for and supporting participation after discharge through further meetings and supported community activities. RESULTS Data were synthesised into one overarching theme: making sense of recovery. This occurred through the sharing of experiences and stories; was pivotal to the mentoring relationship; and appeared to benefit both mentees and mentors. Mentors were perceived as valued experts because of their personal experience of injury and recovery, and could provide support in ways that were different from that provided by clinicians or family members. Mentors required support to manage the uncertainties inherent in the role. CONCLUSIONS The insight mentors developed through their own lived experience established them as a trusted and credible source of hope and support for people re-engaging in the community post-TBI. These findings indicate the potential for mentoring to result in positive outcomes.

Disability in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis compared with traumatic brain injury using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 and the International Classification of Functioning minimal generic set. Abstract
We compared the functioning of two neurological patient groups, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), using brief and validated International Classification of Functioning (ICF)-based tools. A 12-item World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) questionnaire was mailed to ALS and TBI patients and their significant others 2 weeks before their appointment at an outpatient clinic of a university hospital. In addition, a neurologist filled in the ICF minimal generic set. Two years after diagnosis, no significant differences between the two diagnosis groups were found in overall functioning or in working ability using either patient or proxy WHODAS or physician-rated minimal generic set. In single items, however, clear differences were found. Patients and significant others rated household activities, mobility, and self-care as more impaired in the group with ALS, and learning, concentrating, and maintaining friendships in the group with TBI. There were no differences between the two diagnosis groups in the WHODAS items emotional functions, engaging in community, relating with strangers, or in working ability. Both brief ICF-based generic scales, WHODAS and the ICF generic set, could show differences between these patient groups with severe disability. The results of this study should promote assessment of disability with WHODAS 2.0 in ALS and TBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize employment stability and identify predictive factors of employment stability in working-age individuals after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) that may be clinically addressed. DESIGN Longitudinal observational study of an inception cohort from the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems National Database (TBIMS-NDB) using data at years 1, 2, and 5 post-TBI. SETTING Inpatient rehabilitation centers with telephone follow-up. PARTICIPANTS Individuals enrolled in the TBIMS-NDB since 2001, aged 18-59, with employment data at 2 or more follow-up interviews at years 1, 2, and 5 (N=5683). INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Employment stability, categorized using post-TBI employment data as no paid employment (53.25%), stably (27.20%), delayed (10.24%), or unstably (9.31%) employed. RESULTS Multinomial regression analyses identified predictive factors of employment stability, including younger age, white race, less severe injuries, preinjury employment, higher annual earnings, male sex, higher education, transportation independence postinjury, and no anxiety or depression at 1 year post-TBI. CONCLUSIONS Employment stability serves as an important measure of productivity post-TBI. Psychosocial, clinical, environmental, and demographic factors predict employment stability post-TBI. Notable predictors include transportation independence as well as the presence of anxiety and depression at year 1 post-TBI as potentially modifiable intervention targets.

Abstract
The objectives were to investigate the frequency of return-to-work (RTW) one year after severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI: Glasgow Coma Scale, GCS 3-8) and to identify which demographic and injury-related characteristics and neurocognitive factors are associated with RTW. This study is part of a prospective national study on sTBI conducted in all four Norwegian Trauma Referral Centres, including patients aged >15 years over a period of three years (n = 378). For the purpose of this study, only pre-employed individuals of working age (16 to 67 years) were investigated for RTW (n = 143), and of these, 104 participants underwent neuropsychological testing. Measures of acute injury severity, neuropsychological composite scores (Memory, Processing Speed, Executive Functions) at the one-year follow-up, and the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Functions (patient- and relative reports) were explored as predictors of RTW. The frequency of RTW was 54.5%. Multivariate logistic regression analyses identified younger age, shorter length of stay in intensive care, better Processing Speed scores, and lower levels of metacognitive difficulties as rated by relatives as significant predictors of RTW. Findings support the importance of neuropsychological measures in predicting long-term RTW and highlight the need to address neurocognitive and behavioural difficulties to improve RTW after sTBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify predictors of return to work (RTW) and stable labour market attachment (LMA) after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Denmark. MATERIALS & METHODS Patients aged 18-64 years, admitted to highly specialized neurorehabilitation after severe TBI 2004-2012 were included and followed up for ≤6 years. Weekly LMA data were retrieved from a national register of public assistance benefits. Weeks without or with supplemental public assistance benefits were defined as LMA weeks. Time of RTW was defined as first week with LMA. Stable LMA was defined as weeks with LMA ≥75% first year after RTW. Multivariable regressions were used to identify predictors of RTW and stable LMA among preinjury characteristics, injury severity, functional ability and rehabilitation trajectories. RESULTS For the analyses of RTW and stable LMA, 651 and 336 patients were included, respectively. RTW was significantly associated with age (adjusted subhazard ratio 0.98, 95% CI 0.97-0.99), education (1.83, 95% CI 1.16-2.89), supplemental benefits (3.97, 95% CI 2.04-7.71), no benefits (4.86, 95% CI 2.90-8.17), length of stay in acute care (0.77, 95% CI 0.60-0.99) and time period of injury (1.56, 95% CI 1.15-2.10). The only significant predictor of stable LMA was age (adjusted odds ratio 0.97, 95% CI 0.95-0.99). CONCLUSION RTW after severe TBI was associated with several socio-economic factors, whereas maintaining LMA depended on age only. We suggest that RTW rates could be improved by extensive rehabilitation targeting people that are older and low-educated, as these were less likely to RTW.

Abstract
Background A considerable proportion of patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) experience long-lasting somatic, cognitive, and emotional symptoms that may hamper their capacity to return to work (RTW). Although several studies have described medical, psychological, and work-related factors that predict RTW after TBI, well-controlled intervention studies regarding RTW are scarce. Furthermore, there has traditionally been weak collaboration among health-related rehabilitation services, the labor and welfare sector, and workplaces. Methods/design This study protocol describes an innovative randomized controlled trial in which we will explore the effect of combining manualized cognitive rehabilitation (Compensatory Cognitive Training [CCT]) and supported employment (SE) on RTW and related outcomes for patients with mild to moderate TBI in real-life competitive work settings. The study will be carried out in the southeastern region of Norway and thereby be performed within the Norwegian welfare system. Patients aged 18–60 years with mild to moderate TBI who are employed in a minimum 50% position at the time of injury and sick-listed 50% or more for postconcussive symptoms 2 months postinjury will be included in the study. A comprehensive assessment of neurocognitive function, self-reported symptoms, emotional distress, coping style, and quality of life will be performed at baseline, immediately after CCT (3 months after inclusion), following the end of SE (6 months after inclusion), and 12 months following study inclusion. The primary outcome measures are the proportion of participants who have returned to work at 12-month follow-up and length of time until RTW, in addition to work stability as well as work productivity over the first year following the intervention. Secondary outcomes include changes in self-reported symptoms, emotional and cognitive function, and quality of life. Additionally, a qualitative RTW process evaluation focused on organizational challenges at the workplace will be performed. Discussion The proposed study will combine cognitive and vocational rehabilitation and explore the efficacy of increased cross-sectoral collaboration between specialized health care services and the labor and welfare system. If the intervention proves effective, the project will describe the cost-effectiveness and utility of the program and thereby provide important information for policy makers. In addition, knowledge about the RTW process for persons with TBI and their workplaces will be provided. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03092713. Registered on 10 March 2017. Abstract
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES To assess longitudinal trajectories of overall disability after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to examine whether those trajectories could be predicted by socio-demographic and injury characteristics. METHODS Demographics and injury characteristics of 105 individuals with moderate-to-severe TBI were extracted from medical records. At the 1-, 2-, and 5-year follow-ups, TBI-related disability was assessed by the GOSE. A hierarchical linear model (HLM) was used to examine functional outcomes up to 5 years following injury and whether those outcomes could be predicted by: time, gender, age, relationship, education, employment pre-injury, occupation, GCS, cause of injury, length of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), CT findings and injury severity score, as well as the interactions between each of these predictors and time. RESULTS Higher GOSE trajectories (lower disability) were predicted by younger age at injury and shorter PTA, as well as by the interaction terms of time*PTA and time*employment. Those who had been employed at injury decreased in disability over time, while those who had been unemployed increased in disability. CONCLUSION The study results support the view that individual factors generally outweigh injury-related factors as predictors of disability after TBI, except for PTA.

Abstract
Using data from the 2010–2012 American Community Survey (ACS), we estimate employment outcomes among persons with different combinations of sensory, functional, and activity limitations while controlling for individual characteristics. We consider activity limitations as indicators of barriers to independent living and of a need for support services. We find that the presence of an activity limitation is strongly associated with decreased odds of employment for persons with sensory or functional limitations. Results provide support for the targeted allocation of resources to increase independent living among persons with disabilities as a means to improve employment outcomes among persons with disabilities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of unemployment and part-time employment in the United States for working-age individuals completing rehabilitation for a primary diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI) between 2001 and 2010. DESIGN Secondary data analysis. SETTING Acute inpatient rehabilitation facilities. PARTICIPANTS Patients aged 16 to 60 years at injury who completed inpatient rehabilitation for TBI between 2001 and 2010. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Unemployment; Part-time employment. RESULTS The prevalence of unemployment for persons in the selected cohort was 60.4% at 2-year postinjury. Prevalence of unemployment at 2-year postinjury was significantly associated with the majority of categories of age group, race, gender, marital status, primary inpatient rehabilitation payment source, education, preinjury vocational status, length of stay, and Disability Rating Scale. The direction of association for the majority of these variables complement previous research in this area, with only Hispanic ethnicity and the FIM Cognitive subscale demonstrating disparate findings. For those employed at 2-year postinjury, the prevalence of part-time employment was 35.0%. The model of prevalence for part-time employment at 2-year postinjury was less robust, with significant relationships with some categorical components of age group, gender, marital status, primary payment source, preinjury vocational status, and Disability Rating Scale. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of unemployment for patients completing inpatient rehabilitation for TBI was substantial (60.4%). The majority of factors found to associate with 2 years' unemployment were complementary of previously published research; however, these were often smaller in magnitude than previous reports. The prevalence of part-time employment was also an issue for this cohort and included 35.0% of all employed individuals. In regard to the determination of factors associated with part-time employment, additional analyses that include more fine-grained factors associated with employment, including physical and psychosocial functioning, are recommended.

Systematic Literature Review on ICF From 2001 to 2013 in the Nordic Countries Focusing on Clinical and Rehabilitation Context. J Clin Med Res 2016; 8:1-9. Abstract
We present a systematic review on International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) used in the Nordic countries from 2001 through 2013, describing and quantifying the development in utilization of ICF, and describe the extent to which the different components of the ICF have been used. A search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE and PsycInfo. Papers from Nordic countries were included if ICF was mentioned in title or abstract. Papers were assigned to one of eight categories covering the wide rehabilitation area; furthermore, area of focus was assigned. Use of ICF components and intervention were coded in papers categorized as "clinical and/or rehabilitation contexts" or "non-clinical contexts". One hundred seventy papers were included, of these 99 papers were from the categories "clinical and/or rehabilitation contexts" or "non-clinical contexts". Forty-two percent of the 170 included papers were published in the period 2011 - 2013. There was an increase in ICF-relevant papers from 2001 to 2013, especially in the categories "clinical and/or rehabilitation contexts" and "non-clinical contexts". The most represented focus areas were neurology, musculoskeletal, and work-related areas. All five or at least four ICF components were mentioned in the results or discussions in most papers, and activity was most frequently mentioned.

Abstract
Nearly 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. These injuries can result in physical, emotional, and cognitive consequences. While many individuals receive cognitive rehabilitation from occupational therapists (OTs), the interdisciplinary nature of TBI research makes it difficult to remain up-to-date on relevant findings. We conducted a literature review to identify and summarize interdisciplinary evidence-based practice targeting cognitive rehabilitation for civilian adults with TBI. Our review summarizes TBI background, and our cognitive remediation section focuses on the findings from 37 recent (since 2006) empirical articles directly related to cognitive rehabilitation for individuals (i.e., excluding special populations such as veterans or athletes). This manuscript is offered as a tool for OTs engaged in cognitive rehabilitation and as a means to highlight arenas where more empirical, interdisciplinary research is needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore and describe how client-centred occupational therapy interventions may support and improve the ability to use everyday technology (ET) in work tasks in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). METHOD A qualitative, descriptive multiple-case study was designed, and occupation-based interventions were provided to three working-age participants with ABI. Multiple sources were used to collect data throughout the three intervention processes, including assessments, field notes, and interviews. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure and the Management of Everyday Technology Assessment were administered before the interventions, after the interventions and at a follow-up session 2-3 months subsequent to the interventions. RESULTS The three intervention processes initially consisted of similar actions, but subsequently the actions took on a different focus and intensity for each case. All of the goals in each of the three case processes were achieved, and both perceived and observed abilities to use ET in work tasks improved. CONCLUSIONS Client-centred occupational therapy interventions might have the potential to improve the ability to use ET in work tasks in people with ABI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To gather knowledge about effective return-to-work (RTW) interventions for patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). METHODS A database search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library using keywords and Medical Subject Headings. Studies were included if they met inclusion criteria: adult patients with non-progressive ABI, working pre-injury and an intervention principally designed to improve RTW as an outcome. The methodological quality of included studies was determined and evidence was assessed qualitatively. RESULTS Twelve studies were included, of which five were randomized controlled trials and seven were cohort studies. Nine studies had sufficient methodological quality. There is strong evidence that work-directed interventions in combination with education/coaching are effective regarding RTW and there are indicative findings for the effectiveness of work-directed interventions in combination with skills training and education/coaching. Reported components of the most effective interventions were tailored approach, early intervention, involvement of patient and employer, work or workplace accommodations, work practice and training of social and work-related skills, including coping and emotional support. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Effective RTW interventions for patients with ABI are a combination of work-directed interventions, coaching/education and/or skills training. These interventions have the potential to facilitate sustained RTW for patients with ABI.
