Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Adolescent Asthma Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for the Turkish population. DESIGN AND METHOD This study involved 198 adolescents aged 12-18 who had been diagnosed with asthma. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Information Questionnaire and the Turkish version of the Adolescent Asthma Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. The validity of the scale was evaluated using the content validity index, explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses, Cronbach's alpha reliability score, split-half method, item-total score correlation, and test-retest. RESULTS The Turkish version of the Adolescent Asthma Self-Efficacy Questionnaire has a total explained variance of 63%. Factor loadings were found to be higher than 0.40 in both explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses. The test-retest reliability coefficient is 0.91, and the total Cronbach's alpha value of the scale is 0.93, with all subscales having a Cronbach's alpha value >0.84. The model fit indices of the scale were found to be at an acceptable level. CONCLUSION The Adolescent Asthma Self-Efficacy Questionnaire is a valid and reliable measurement tool for the Turkish population. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The AASEQ can be a useful tool for healthcare professionals in the assessment of self-efficacy in adolescents who have had a diagnosis of asthma.

Abstract
AIM To explore children and young people's (CYP) (5-24 years of age) self-reported experiences of asthma self-management strategies (ASMS) with nursing involvement across various settings. BACKGROUND Childhood asthma is an increasingly significant health issue, highlighting the importance of acquiring self-management skills to optimise future health outcomes. Registered nurses play a pivotal role in delivering appropriate, personalized self-management support. METHODS This integrative review searched four electronic databases: Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature via Elton B. Stephens Company, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Object, View and Interactive Design (OVID), and PubMed, that followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis flowchart. Included studies were critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Braun and Clarks thematic analysis was used to generate themes, and sub-themes. FINDINGS Fifteen studies were included for review. Thematic analysis generated three themes being healthy literacy; health and wellbeing; and tools and working together. CONCLUSIONS Asthma continues to have negative physical, psychological, and social implications among CYP. CYP are both willing and capable of engaging in ASMS and learning self-management skills, however, continue to have unmet self-management needs. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE Strategies must bolster health literacy, improve physical and psychological health, and harness interactive, youth-centric, and informative tools to facilitate communication and decrease the burden of self-management. Applications pose a promising avenue for self-management support. This age group remains under-explored and future research should enable meaningful engagement with CYP to better understand their perspectives and improve strategy success.

Abstract
Objective: Asthma is a common chronic disease and a substantial public health problem for children, adolescents, and adults. Adolescence, a period of increased independence and striving for autonomy, is an opportune time for youth transitioning to adulthood to assume more responsibility for their own asthma self-management. However, accurate measures of adolescent asthma outcomes are limited. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify self-reported asthma measures currently available in the empirical literature focused on adolescent populations. Methods: Search terms were based on the National Library of Medical Subject Headings and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Databases searched included CINAHL, Nursing Allied Health Prevention, Medline, ProQuest, and PubMed. Included studies were peer reviewed and published in English between 2010 and 2022. All studies reported on asthma measures for adolescents between 10 and 19 years old. Results: Nineteen studies were included, comprising 15 experimental and 4 quasi-experimental. This review revealed the following asthma measure domains: asthma knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, self-care, self-regulation, symptom prevention and management, medication adherence, asthma disease control, symptoms, and quality of life (QOL) for evaluating psychosocial, behavioral, clinical, and QOL outcomes. Conclusion: This review revealed the necessity of developing a comprehensive measure to assess the asthma self-management behaviors of adolescents. A comprehensive tool related to adolescent asthma self-management behavior would enhance the assessment and evaluation of adolescent asthma self-management behaviors and extend the science and clinical practice around adolescent self-management. Present measures for asthma self-management behavior for adolescents are limited; therefore, developing a valid and reliable measure is necessary not only to assess adolescents' asthma self-management behavior outcomes but also to identify and evaluate the essential components to include in educational interventions for adolescent self-management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To construct and validate the content and appearance of an information booklet to promote self-efficacy of parents and/or caregivers in childhood asthma management and control. METHOD This is a methodological study, developed from educational material elaboration, validity and assessment by 25 content judges and three technical judges. Language clarity, practical pertinence and theoretical relevance were used, calculating the Content Validity Coefficient (CVC) for validity, and the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) instrument was applied for assessment. Judges were also able to make suggestions for modifications on each page of the booklet. Pages that reached a CVC ≥ 0.80 for content judges and CVC ≥ 0.70 for technical judges were considered validated. RESULTS The total CVC of the booklet was 0.96 for content judges and 0.83 for technical judges. The educational material was considered superior according to the SAM, with a total score of 92.67% for content judges and 73.81% for technical judges. Changes were made to the booklet after the validity process, according to judges' suggestions, resulting in a second version. CONCLUSION The information booklet is valid and has a high degree of recommendation for use with parents and/or caregivers in childhood asthma control and management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although peer relationships become increasingly important across adolescence and early adulthood, research examining links between peer relationships and the health outcomes of young people with asthma is scarce. Using a large sample of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with asthma, the current study assessed whether positive and negative peer experiences are associated with AYAs' asthma control, asthma self-efficacy, and internalizing symptoms. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a national sample of 440 diverse adolescents and young adults with asthma completed an online survey. Questionnaires assessed general and asthma-specific peer experiences (i.e. peer victimization; peer support; asthma-related peer problems) and health indicators (i.e. asthma control; asthma self-efficacy; internalizing symptoms). Regression analyses were performed to examine associations between peer experiences and health while controlling for participant age, gender, race/ethnicity, and age of asthma diagnosis. RESULTS Results from separate regression models indicated that adolescents who experienced greater peer victimization, less peer support, and more asthma-related peer problems also reported worse asthma control, lower asthma self-efficacy, and more severe internalizing symptoms. Follow-up exploratory analyses indicated that peer victimization and asthma-related peer problems were the strongest predictors of asthma control and internalizing, whereas peer support and asthma-related peer problems were the strongest predictors of asthma self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores connections between peer relationships and health outcomes among AYAs with asthma. Interventions that leverage peer support and mitigate peer stress may offer a developmentally appropriate approach for mitigating physical and psychological distress among adolescents and young adults with asthma.

Abstract
Moyamoya disease is a cerebrovascular disorder and a significant chronic health concern requiring regular monitoring to control the disease and its related complications. We examined a hypothetical model by integrating the concepts of a structural health-related quality-of-life model based on the salutogenesis theory, and to identify how social support, sense of coherence, and stress contribute to health behaviors, subjective health status, and quality of life in adolescents with moyamoya disease among 239 adolescents in Korea. A structural equation model was used to analyze the data. The fitness of the hypothetical model with the salutogenesis theory was satisfactory, showing that the goodness-of-fit index = 0.91, adjusted goodness-to-fit index = 0.90, comparative fit index = 0.92, normed fit index = 0.91, incremental fit index = 0.91, standardized root mean squared residual = 0.04, root mean square error of approximation = 0.07, parsimony normed fit index = 0.61, parsimony goodness of fit index = 0.51. The model explained 68.9% of quality of life. Health behavior (β = -0.173, p = 0.467) and stress (β = -0.557, p < 0.001) had significant direct and total effects on quality of life. Sense of coherence had a significant direct (β = 0.371, p = 0.003), indirect (β = 0.220, p = 0.013), and total (β = 0.590, p < 0.001) effect on quality of life. This study found that sense of coherence was significant factors contributing to lower stress, improved health status, and quality of life in adolescents with moyamoya disease. To improve the quality of life for adolescents with moyamoya disease, comprehensive nursing interventions need to be developed and applied.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic syndrome affecting about 1 in 3500 individuals; many of those affected have plexiform neurofibroma (pNF) tumors and associated symptoms and complications. Furthermore, learning and attention problems, as well as deficits in adaptive functioning, are common, often beginning in early childhood. This study aimed to describe adaptive functioning and to examine relationships between adaptive functioning and cognitive and academic variables and level of independence among adolescents and young adults (AYA) with NF1 and pNF tumors. Fifty-five AYA aged 16-31 years participated in a series of neuropsychological evaluations while parents completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS-II) as part of a larger natural history study. Over one-third (35%) of AYA were neither in school nor employed. Mean VABS-II daily living and socialization scores were low average while mean Verbal and Performance IQ scores were average. VABS-II scores were positively correlated with processing speed, executive functioning, and working memory scores. Verbal IQ was the only significant predictor of work/school status. Identification of the correlates and predictors of adaptive functioning and life achievement can help guide healthcare providers with the early identification of risk factors and possible areas for intervention.

Abstract
Background: Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) is common in young people with exertional breathing difficulties. Psychological characteristics have been proposed as underlying contributors; however, the evidence for this is limited. Objectives: Describe self-reported health, self-efficacy, and anxiety symptoms in adolescents with EILO, and address possible associations with EILO subtypes and severity. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 71/180 (39%) adolescents tested for EILO at Haukeland University Hospital during 2014-2016, age range 14-18 years. Validated questionnaires were used to assess general self-rated health, subjective health complaints (Health Behavior in School-aged Children-Symptom Check List; HBSC-SCL), general self-efficacy (GSE), and anxiety symptoms (SCARED). The outcomes were compared with normative data from comparable unselected populations. Results: The HBSC-SCL items for somatic complaints revealed weekly or more often occurrence of headache in 42%, abdominal pain in 30%, backache in 31%, and dizziness in 32%. For psychological complaints, corresponding figures were 26% for feeling low, 43% for irritability or bad mood, 33% for feeling nervous, and 38% for sleep problems. Mean (range) GSE score was 3.13 (2.2-4.0), and reports suggesting anxiety symptoms were rare. The outcomes were in line with normative data from comparable unselected populations. Self-rated health, and scores obtained for HBSC-SCL, GSE, and SCARED were similarly distributed across EILO subtypes and severity. Conclusion: Self-reported health, self-efficacy, and level of anxiety symptoms in adolescents with laryngoscopically confirmed EILO were similar to data obtained in comparable unselected populations, irrespective of EILO subtype and severity. The findings challenge the notion that pediatric EILO is causally related to psychological problems.

Abstract
Background The asthma prevalence of Taiwanese adolescents continued to rise. With physical and psychological changes in adolescents, managing asthma can be quite challenges and affect social, emotional and physical wellbeing. Adolescents with high self-efficacy levels are more likely to be involved in prevention and management activities. The aim of this study was to develop an effective asthma self-management program taking account for adolescents' developmental stages and based on Bandura's self-efficacy model. Methods A two-arm, parallel group, randomized controlled trial was used. The outcomes were self-efficacy, outcome-expectancy, asthma prevention and self-management behaviour, and controlling asthma symptoms. Translation and back-translation process were used for original tools in English. Good consistent reliabilities of Chinese versions tools were identified. A t-test or Mann-Whiney U test was employed to determine any mean differences of outcome variables between groups overtime. Results A sample of 83 patients completed the study. The mean age was 14.2 years (SD = 1.8). Approximately 56.6% of the participants were males. 73% of participants (n = 61) had a mild to intermittent level of asthma severity. Significant improvements were found on self-efficacy, t = −2.8; outcome-expectancy, U = 646, prevention behaviours, t = −3.5, and management behaviours, t = −3.2, but non-significant results for the outcome of asthma control, U = 716. Conclusions The results provided evidence to support the efficacy of the asthma self-management program. The findings indicated the program improved adolescents’ self-confidence in managing their asthma symptoms. Future clinical practice should consider delivering an educational program using multifaceted and interactive learning strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examines the relationships between 3 measures of asthma-related self-efficacy and compares them by their relationships to quality of life, medication adherence, asthma control, asthma knowledge, and attitudes in adolescents. METHODS Participants included 371 urban adolescents (age 12-20 years) with asthma. Three self-efficacy measures included the Asthma Outcome Expectation-self-efficacy subscale (AOE-SE), Asthma Management Index-self-efficacy subscale (AMI-SE), and the Asthma Self-Efficacy scale (ASE). RESULTS The sample included 50% male, predominantly African American (78.4%) participants. All 3 measures of self-efficacy were positively correlated with each other (r = 0.46-0.54, P < .001). After controlling for gender, age, race, and health insurance type, all 3 self-efficacy measures predicted the symptom domain of quality of life, adherence, asthma control, and knowledge. Activity limitation was predicted by AMI-SE (B = 0.19, P = .008) and ASE (B = 0.38, P < .001) but not by AOE-SE, while emotional function associated only with ASE (B = 0.37, P < 0.001). Attitudes were positively associated with AOE-SE and ASE (B = 1.83 and 2.87, respectively, P < 0.001 for both), but not with AMI-SE. CONCLUSIONS Medication adherence and symptom control in adolescents were predicted by self-efficacy measured by the 3 measures, while these measures differed in their performance in predicting psychosocial outcomes. ASE appears the measure of choice in measuring adolescents' self-efficacy given its association with all outcome measures of the study. Further research is needed to investigate the generalized use of the self-efficacy measures in populations with varying demographic or asthma characteristics.

Abstract
Objectives This scoping review aims to give a comprehensive and systematic overview of published evaluations and the potential impact of patient education interventions for children, adolescents and young adults who are living with chronic illness and/or impairment loss. Methods Relevant literature published between 2008 and 2018 has been comprehensively reviewed, with attention paid to variations in study, intervention and patient characteristics. Arksey and O'Malley's framework for scoping studies guided the review process, and thematic analysis was undertaken to synthesize extracted data. Results Of the 7214 titles identified, 69 studies were included in this scoping review. Participant‐reported benefits of the interventions included less distress from symptoms, improved medical adherence and/or less use of medication, and improved knowledge. The majority of studies measuring physical activity and/or physiologic outcomes found beneficial effects. Interventions were also beneficial in terms of decreased use of urgent health care, hospitalization, visits to general practitioner and absence from school. By sharing experiences, participants had learned from each other and attained new insight on how they could manage illness‐related challenges. Discussion Study results corroborate previous research suggesting that different types of patient education interventions have a positive impact on children, adolescents and young adults, but research on this field is still in a starting phase. The results summed up in the current review supports the utility of patient education interventions that employ behavioural strategies tailored to the developmental needs of children, adolescents and young adults with different cultural backgrounds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Health-related quality of life is an important outcome measurement in the monitoring of asthma control. Self-efficacy is a determinant of self-management behaviors that can contribute to the improvement of asthma control and quality of life. Our objective was to analyze the relationship between self-efficacy and quality of life in children with asthma and their caregivers. METHODS We included 176 patients aged 6-14 years with asthma, and determined their level of self-efficacy according to three groups (low, medium and high levels). Each child and their main caregiver completed the PAQLQ and PACQLQ questionnaires, respectively. RESULTS PAQLQ range=1-7: 5.61±1.11; PACQLQ range=1-7: 5.42±1.35; self-efficacy range=0-60: low level 28.44±4.58; average level 37.41±1.7, and high level 47.50±5.5. Significant differences were observed in quality of life according to low-medium vs. high levels of self-efficacy. Specific related domains: PAQLQ emotions and PAQLQ symptoms with self-efficacy in problem-solving skills related to asthma and treatment self-efficacy; PACQLQ emotions with self-efficacy in problem-solving skills related to asthma. CONCLUSIONS A high level of self-efficacy is associated with a better quality of life for children and their caregivers. Based on these results, the measurement of self-efficacy could be incorporated in the assessment of educational interventions in self-management targeted at the quality of life of the patient and his or her family.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to construct and test a hypothetical model of the quality of life of school-age children with asthma based on the health-related quality of life model by Wilson and Cleary. METHODS Data were collected from 205 pairs of pediatric outpatients diagnosed with asthma and their parents in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from July 2016 to April 2017. The exogenous variables were asthma knowledge, number of accompanying allergic diseases, and social support. The endogenous variables were asthma self-efficacy, asthma symptom control, perceived health status, parental quality of life, and children's quality of life. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling were performed. RESULTS Eighteen of the twenty-four hypotheses selected for the hypothetical model were attentive and supported statistically. Quality of life was explained by asthma self-efficacy, asthma symptom control, perceived health, parental quality of life, and asthma knowledge with 83.5%. CONCLUSION Strategies for promoting self-efficacy and enforcing asthma knowledge will be helpful for the improvement of health-related quality of life with school-aged asthmatic children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify and review strategies of providing care for children living with chronic health conditions in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS We searched MEDLINE and Cochrane EPOC databases for papers evaluating strategies of providing care for children with chronic health conditions in low- or middle-income countries. Data were systematically extracted using a standardised data charting form, and analysed according to Arksey and O'Malley's 'descriptive analytical method' for scoping reviews. RESULTS Our search identified 71 papers addressing eight chronic conditions; two chronic communicable diseases (HIV and TB) accounted for the majority of papers (n = 37, 52%). Nine (13%) papers reported the use of a package of care provision strategies (mostly related to HIV and/or TB in sub-Saharan Africa). Most papers addressed a narrow aspect of clinical care provision, such as patient education (n = 23) or task-shifting (n = 15). Few papers addressed the strategies for providing care at the community (n = 10, 15%) or policy (n = 6, 9%) level. Low-income countries were under-represented (n = 24, 34%), almost exclusively involving HIV interventions in sub-Saharan Africa (n = 21). Strategies and summary findings are described and components of future models of care proposed. CONCLUSIONS Strategies that have been effective in reducing child mortality globally are unlikely to adequately address the needs of children with chronic health conditions in low- and middle-income settings. Current evidence mostly relates to disease-specific, narrow strategies, and more research is required to develop and evaluate the integrated models of care, which may be effective in improving the outcomes for these children.
