Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the association between dry eye disease (DED) and various psychiatric and systemic diseases in an adult Korean population aged 40 years or older. METHODS Population-based cross-sectional data of 6,732 participants aged ≥40 years was extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018 (KNHANES VII). Data including DED, demographic variables, behavioral factors, psychiatric conditions, and systemic diseases was analysed to determine the prevalence and psychiatric and systemic risk factors for DED. RESULTS The weighted prevalence of DED was 7.9 ± 0.4% (mean ± SE). Multivariate analysis showed that female sex and urban residence were associated with an increased risk of DED. The prevalence of DED was lower in patients aged ≥70 years than in those aged 40-69 years. Self-reported psychological conditions including perceived stress and depression were associated with the risk of DED. Self-reported Systemic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative arthritis, osteoporosis, ischemic heart disease, and chronic renal failure had association with an increased risk of DED. CONCLUSION DED may be associated with several self-reported psychiatric and systemic conditions, which highlights the need for an integrated approach to manage these diseases for optimal treatment of DED.

Abstract
Nutrients, required by human bodies to perform life-sustaining functions, are obtained from the diet. They are broadly classified into macronutrients (carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and water. All nutrients serve as a source of energy, provide structural support to the body and/or regulate the chemical processes of the body. Food and drinks also consist of non-nutrients that may be beneficial (e.g., antioxidants) or harmful (e.g., dyes or preservatives added to processed foods) to the body and the ocular surface. There is also a complex interplay between systemic disorders and an individual's nutritional status. Changes in the gut microbiome may lead to alterations at the ocular surface. Poor nutrition may exacerbate select systemic conditions. Similarly, certain systemic conditions may affect the uptake, processing and distribution of nutrients by the body. These disorders may lead to deficiencies in micro- and macro-nutrients that are important in maintaining ocular surface health. Medications used to treat these conditions may also cause ocular surface changes. The prevalence of nutrition-related chronic diseases is climbing worldwide. This report sought to review the evidence supporting the impact of nutrition on the ocular surface, either directly or as a consequence of the chronic diseases that result. To address a key question, a systematic review investigated the effects of intentional food restriction on ocular surface health; of the 25 included studies, most investigated Ramadan fasting (56%), followed by bariatric surgery (16%), anorexia nervosa (16%), but none were judged to be of high quality, with no randomized-controlled trials.

Impact of Chronic Kidney Disease on Corneal Neuroimmune Features in Type 2 Diabetes. J Clin Med 2022; 12:jcm12010016. Abstract
Aim: To determine the impact of chronic kidney disease on corneal nerve measures and dendritic cell counts in type 2 diabetes. Methods: In vivo corneal confocal microscopy images were used to estimate corneal nerve parameters and compared in people with type 2 diabetes with chronic kidney disease (T2DM-CKD) (n = 29) and those with type 2 diabetes without chronic kidney disease (T2DM-no CKD) (n = 29), along with 30 healthy controls. Corneal dendritic cell densities were compared between people with T2DM-CKD and those with T2DM-no CKD. The groups were matched for neuropathy status. Results: There was a significant difference in corneal nerve fiber density (p < 0.01) and corneal nerve fiber length (p = 0.04) between T2DM-CKD and T2DM-no CKD groups. The two diabetes groups had reduced corneal nerve parameters compared to healthy controls (all parameters: p < 0.01). Immature central dendritic cell density was significantly higher in the T2DM-CKD group compared to the T2DM-no CKD group ((7.0 (3.8−12.8) and 3.5 (1.4−13.4) cells/mm2, respectively, p < 0.05). Likewise, central mature dendritic cell density was significantly higher in the T2DM-CKD group compared to the T2DM-no CKD group (0.8 (0.4−2.2) and 0.4 (0.6−1.1) cells/mm2, respectively, p = 0.02). Additionally, total central dendritic cell density was increased in the T2DM-CKD group compared to T2DM-no CKD group (10.4 (4.3−16.1) and 3.9 (2.1−21.0) cells/mm2, respectively, p = 0.03). Conclusion: The study showed that central corneal dendritic cell density is increased in T2DM-CKD compared to T2DM-no CKD, with groups matched for peripheral neuropathy severity. This is accompanied by a loss of central corneal nerve fibers. The findings raise the possibility of additional local factors exacerbating central corneal nerve injury in people with diabetic chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE There is a reduction in corneal nerve fiber density and length in type 2 diabetes mellitus with chronic kidney disease compared with type 2 diabetes mellitus alone; however, this difference does not result in worse ocular surface discomfort or dry eye disease. PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the clinical impact of corneal nerve loss on ocular surface discomfort and markers of ocular surface homeostasis in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus without chronic kidney disease (T2DM-no CKD) and those with type 2 diabetes mellitus with concurrent chronic kidney disease (T2DM-CKD). METHODS Participants were classified based on estimated glomerular filtration rates into two groups: T2DM-CKD (n = 27) and T2DM-no CKD (n = 28). RESULTS There was a significant difference between the T2DM-CKD and T2DM-no CKD groups in corneal nerve fiber density (14.9 ± 8.6 and 21.1 ± 7.1 no./mm 2 , respectively; P = .005) and corneal nerve fiber length (10.0 ± 4.6 and 12.3 ± 3.7 mm/mm 2 , respectively; P = .04). Fluorescein tear breakup time was significantly reduced in T2DM-CKD compared with T2DM-no CKD (8.1 ± 4.4 and 10.7 ± 3.8 seconds, respectively; P = .01), whereas ocular surface staining was not significantly different (3.5 ± 1.7 and 2.7 ± 2.3 scores, respectively; P = .12). In terms of ocular surface discomfort, there were no significant differences in the ocular discomfort score scores (12.5 ± 11.1 and 13.6 ± 12.1, respectively; P = .81) and Ocular Pain Assessment Survey scores (3.3 ± 5.4 and 4.3 ± 6.1, respectively; P = .37) between the T2DM-CKD and T2DM-no CKD. CONCLUSIONS The current study demonstrated that corneal nerve loss is greater in T2DM-CKD than in T2DM-no CKD. However, these changes do not impact ocular surface discomfort or markers of ocular surface homeostasis.

Abstract
Purpose Patients with end-stage renal failure are susceptible to dry eye disease. This study explores the relationship between dry eye disease and influence factors. Patients and Methods The control group consisted of 57 healthy subjects who were kidney donors. They were of the same age and sex as the kidney transplant recipients. The outcome variable was the dry eye condition of the participants. The Schirmer test confirmed dry eye disease, TBUT (breakup time test), and the Eye Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, using linear regression to evaluate the association. Results The total number of subjects was 146 (89 kidney recipients and 57 kidney donors). When univariate analysis found the level of visual acuity, the age group involved was statistically significant, while the other factors were not statistically significant. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, age (odds ratio: 2.8, p<0.05), smoking history (odd ratio: 0.1, p<0.05), corneal conjunctival calcification (odd ratio: 0.2, p<0.05); central corneal thickness (odd ratio: 1.02, p<0.05) is considered to be an influence factor for disease progression. Conclusion Age group, smoking history, corneal central thickness, and conjunctival calcification are factors for dry eye disease in patients preparing to receive a kidney. These results reinforce the evidence for multifactorial dry eye disease in patients with renal impairment.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to report the ocular findings in renal allograft recipients in India. Methods A cross-sectional, comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation was performed, at least three months postrenal transplant, in 152 renal allograft recipients for the ocular findings. In addition, ocular findings were assessed for an association with the clinical variables like major etiologies of end-stage renal disease, pre-transplant dialysis duration, post-transplant duration, and dosage of immunosuppressive drugs. Results 72.36% of the recipients (mean age, 38.16 ± 10.04 years) had at least one ocular finding at 3 ± 2.6 years (range, 0.3-14 years), postrenal transplant. Hypertensive retinopathy was the commonest ocular finding followed by posterior subcapsular cataract (20.4%), nuclear sclerosis (19.7%), diabetic retinopathy (15.1%), dry eye (11.2%), allergic conjunctivitis (9.9%), pterygium (6.6%), open-angle glaucoma (3.3%), meibomitis (3.3%), pinguicula (2.6%), chalazion (1.3%), subconjunctival haemorrhage (1.7%), central serous chorioretinopathy (1.7%), healed ocular toxoplasmosis (1.7%), papilledema (1.7%), and dry ARMD (1.7%). In addition, a significant association existed between some of the ocular findings with major aetiologies of ESRD, post-transplant duration, and dosage of immunosuppressive drugs. However, no association existed between the ocular findings and pre-transplant dialysis duration. Conclusion Ocular findings are seen in 72.36% of the renal transplant recipients with hypertensive retinopathy being the commonest one. Hence, a mandatory regular ophthalmic screening of the recipients is recommended for an early detection and timely intervention to improve the quality of life.

Abstract
Background Tears play an important role in ocular surface protection, and help wild animals maintain visual acuity in the face of air and water friction. The proteomics of tears has only been described for mammals. The knowledge of the proteomics of wild animal tears can aid not only in the setting of normal standards for ocular disease studies in these animals, but also to base the search for new molecules to be used in ophthalmology therapeutics. We therefore set out to describe the proteomic profile of roadside hawk (Rupornis magnirostris), broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) and loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) tears. Tears were collected from healthy animals, their spectral profiles were obtained with an LTQ Orbitrap XL mass spectrometer, and the dataset was analyzed against reference taxa. Results For roadside hawk, 446 proteins were identified, the most abundant being albumin, transferrin, globulin and actin. For broad-snouted caiman and loggerhead sea turtle, 1358 and 163 proteins were identified, respectively. Uncharacterized proteins and transferrin were highly abundant in both species. The roadside hawk tear components and their properties were similar to those described for humans, but with a higher albumin concentration. Broad-snouted caiman tears presented a wide diversity of ontological functions, with an abundant presence of enzymatic compounds. In loggerhead sea turtle tears, the predominance of proteins with ion-transport functions was consistent with possible osmolality-maintenance mechanisms. Conclusion These data enhance our understanding of birds and reptiles’ tears microcomposition and may be used to base the discovery of new molecules with high biotechnological potential.

Abstract
Background To explore ocular changes during hemodialysis (HD) in chronic renal failure patients and to determine the effects of different causes of renal failure during HD. Methods A total of 90 eyes from 45 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing HD were evaluated in this study. All ophthalmological examinations were conducted within 1 h before and after a single HD session. The HD patients were divided into primary kidney disease (KD), hypertensive KD, diabetic KD (DM-KD) and unknown etiology subgroups according to the primary etiology of renal failure. The statistics of 38 eyes from 19 healthy people were set as normal control. Results Tear break-up time (TBUT) (P = 0.020), Schirmer’s I test results (P = 0.030), anterior chamber depth (ACD) (P = 0.006), lens thickness (LT) (P < 0.001) and choroidal thickness (CHT) (P < 0.001)decreased significantly after a single HD. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and average retinal thickness (RT) increased after HD, especially in the nasal inner macula (NIM) subfield (P < 0.001), the inferior inner macula (IIM) subfield (P = 0.004) and the superior outer macula (SOM) subfield (P = 0.012). TBUT, Schirmer’s I test, IOP, RT, and CHT were correlated with one or more parameters. All ESRD patients regardless of etiology had the same trend for most parameters during HD, with the exception of the logMAR of BCVA, central corneal thickness, RNFL thickness and CHT. Conclusions HD may affect a range of ocular parameters in ESRD patients. Dry eye parameters, RT and CHT exhibited the most obvious changes. Different etiologies tended to have similar trends in ocular parameter changes during HD.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate dry eye parameters with conventional tests and tear meniscus with Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Thirty-eight ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis, and 40 healthy individuals were enrolled. An ocular surface disease index questionnaire (OSDI) was administered. Before conventional dry eye tests, tear meniscus were evaluated using AS-OCT. After a complete ocular examination, Schirmer and break-up time (BUT) tests were performed and probable corneal staining was investigated. Schirmer test and BUT values were significantly lower in ESRD patients (P < 0.05). OSDI scores and corneal staining scores were significantly higher in ESRD patients (P < 0.05). Tear meniscus height, tear meniscus depth, and tear meniscus area, which were obtained by AS-OCT were significantly lower in patients with ESRD (P < 0.05). Tear meniscus evaluation using AS-OCT is an effective and non-invasive method to assess tear meniscus in patients with ESRD. Patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis should obtain regular ophthalmic examination, especially for dry eye.

Abstract
Aim. To determine the effects of hemodialysis (HD) on tear osmolarity and to define the blood biochemical tests correlating with tear osmolarity among patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Material-Method. Tear osmolarity of ESRD patients before and after the hemodialysis program was determined as well as the blood biochemical data including glucose, sodium, potassium, calcium, urea, and creatinine levels. Results. Totally 43 eyes of 43 patients (20 females and 23 males) with a mean age of 53.98 ± 18.06 years were included in the study. Tear osmolarity of patients was statistically significantly decreased after hemodialysis (314.06 ± 17.77 versus 301.88 ± 15.22 mOsm/L, p = 0.0001). In correlation analysis, pre-HD tear osmolarity was negatively correlated with pre-HD blood creatinine level (r = −0.366, p = 0.016). Post-HD tear osmolarity was statistically significantly correlated with the post-HD glucose levels (r = 0.305 p = 0.047). Tear osmolarity alteration by HD was negatively correlated with creatinine alteration, body weight alteration, and ultrafiltration (r = −0.426, p = 0.004; r = −0.365, p = 0.016; and r = −0.320, p = 0.036, resp.). There was no correlation between tear osmolarity and Kt/V and URR values. Conclusion. HD effectively decreases tear osmolarity to normal values and corrects the volume and composition of the ocular fluid transiently. Tear osmolarity alteration induced by HD is correlated with body weight changes, creatinine alterations, and ultrafiltration.
