Abstract
The aim of the present study is to develop an accurate constitution diagnostic method based solely on the individual's physical characteristics, irrespective of psychologic traits, characteristics of clinical medicine, and genetic factors. In this paper, we suggest a novel method for diagnosing constitutional types using only speech and face characteristics. Based on 514 subjects, the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) values of classification models in age and gender groups ranged from 0.64 to 0.89. We identified significant features showing statistical differences among three constitutional types by performing statistical analysis. Also, we selected a compact and discriminative feature subset for constitution diagnosis in each age and gender group. Our method may support the direction of improved diagnosis prediction and will serve to develop a personal and automatic constitution diagnosis software for improvement of the effectiveness of prescribed medications and development of personalized medicine.

Abstract
The Sasang constitutional medicine (SCM), a medical tradition originating from Korea, is distinguished from the traditional Chinese medicine in its philosophical background, theoretical development and especially, the fundamental rationale that analyzes the structure and function of the human body within a quadrifocal scheme. In SCM, the structure of the body is comprehended within the Sasang quadrifocal scheme, and the function of the body is understood within the context of the energy–fluid metabolism and the water–food metabolism controlled by the four main organs (lung, spleen, liver and kidney). Also, the concept of Seong–Jeong is used to explain the structural and functional variations between different constitutional types that arise from the constitutional variations in organ system scheme, which are in turn caused by deviations in the constitutional Seong–Jeong. Therefore, understanding the SCM perspective of the human body is essential in order to fully appreciate the advantages of the constitutional typological system (which focuses on individual idiosyncrasies) found in SCM.

Abstract
Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) is a traditional Korean form of medicine widely used in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of disease. This paper reviews the main aspects of SCM and "physiome" with emphasis on integrative and holistic characteristics. Methodological and physiological aspects of SCM are summarized with reference to existing studies. The main characteristics of SCM, such as the four physical constitutions and diagnostic methods, are introduced. Moreover, physiome and systems medicine are introduced as plausible candidates for integrative medicine and are compared to reductionism-based molecular biology. We also discuss the conceptual similarity of SCM with predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory (P4) medicine. It is emphasized that the integrative and creative combination of SCM and physiome will unlock a new era of holistic medicine.

Abstract
Yulda-Hanso-Tang (YHT) has been used as a formula for the cerebral infarction (CI) patients. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects and possible mechanism of YHT on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The amount of interleukin-1beta, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha was increased in the LPS-treated cells. But, increased cytokine was inhibited by YHT except IL-8. The study showed that YHT inhibited the IL-1beta mRNA expression. YHT also inhibited LPS-induced activation of NF-kappaB and degradation of IkappaBalpha. These results suggest that YHT is an inhibitor of NF-kappaB, which might explain its beneficial effect in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has been influenced by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it has developed distinctive features. Around the tenth century, Chinese medical books were introduced to Korea. In those days, Koreans started movement to develop its own medical system. METHODS We reviewed Korean and Chinese medical literatures, and analysed the characteristics between two medical systems. RESULTS In the early 17th century, Dongeuibogam was published by Dr Joon Hur. He provided a turning point to establish Korean medical system independent from TCM. TKM emphasizes specific characteristics of the individual who suffered from the disease, rather than single symptom. The concept was elaborated by Dr Jae Ma Lee who published Dongeuisusaebowon in the early 20th century. CONCLUSION Through historical development, TKM has established the unique characteristic and modality as the whole-person-centered medicine.

Abstract
Sasang constitutional medicine is a major branch of Korean traditional oriental medicine. Constitutions of Sasang medicine refer to Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin, and Soumin. The differences of disease severity to be shown in the constitution may be due to genetic factors. Therefore, we examined interrelationship among cerebral infarction, CI, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism, and Sasang constitutional classification. We investigated the association between ACE genotype and CI by case-control study in a Korean population. We also classified CI patients and control group into groups according to Sasang constitutional medicine. 208 CI patients and 643 controls without CI were examined. ACE genotype was determined by 7.5 % polyacrylamide gel separation after DNA amplification. The ACE/DD genotype was not associated with CI. The frequency of Taeumin of Sasang constitutional medicine in patients with CI was significantly higher than that in controls (chi2=41.202, p<0.001). However, the Taeumin constitution did not enhance the relative risk for CI in the subjects with ACE/DD genotype. Although we did not find any association between ACE gene polymorphism and CI in Koreans, there were significant differences in allele frequencies between Koreans and Europeans, but not Japanese and Chinese populations. Furthermore, we first attempted to evaluate the efficacy of Sasang constitutional medicine, and to find an association with CI.

Abstract
Gamcho-Sasim-Tang (GS-Tang) is a traditional Chinese medication, which has been successfully used in Korea for the treatment of Adamantiades-Behçet's disease (ABD). We investigated the modulation effects of GS-Tang on cytokine production from phytohaemagglutinin-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells of Behçet's patients. ABD is a systemic inflammatory disorder and might involve immune dysfunction. Cytokines involved in the regulation of inflammatory reactions and immune responses may play a role in the pathogenesis of ABD. GS-Tang (1 mg/ml) significantly inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), compared to absence of GS-Tang (by 42.0+/-6.6% inhibition for TNF-alpha and 95.9+/-5.7% for IL-1 beta, P<0.05). GS-Tang also inhibited the production of IFN-gamma, immunoregulatory T helper cell type 1 cytokine, by 80.2+/-5.3% (P=0.001). The inhibitory effects of GS-Tang on cytokine production showed dose-dependent manner. Our results suggest that GS-Tang might have anti-inflammatory and immuno-regulatory effects through the cytokine modulation.

Abstract
Yuldahansotang (YH-Tang), a Sasang Constitutional prescription composed of seven herbal mixtures, has been developed as a formula to prevent and treat cerebral infarction (CI) of Taeumins. However, the mechanisms by which this formula affects CI remain unknown. Previously, regulation of serum cytokine levels by YH-Tang has been observed in individuals at the acute stage of CI disease. It is uncertain whether this is a cause or a result of the disease process. In this study, we investigated whether YH-Tang inhibited secretion of inflammatory cytokines from human astrocytes. YH-Tang regulated the cytokine secretions in astrocytes stimulated with substance P (SP) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). YH-Tang significantly inhibited interleukin (IL)-1, IL-4, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) secretion in astrocytes stimulated with SP and LPS, but did not inhibit interferon-y (IFN-gamma) and IL-2 secretion significantly. IL-1 has been shown to elevate TNF-alpha secretion from LPS-stimulated astrocytes while having no effect on astrocytes in the absence of LPS. Therefore, we investigated whether IL-1 mediated inhibition of TNF-alpha secretion from astrocytes by YH-Tang. Incubation of human astrocytes with IL-1 antibody abolished the synergistic cooperative effect of LPS and SP. These results suggest that YH-Tang may indirectly inhibit TNF-alpha secretion by inhibiting IL-1 secretion. Moreover, these findings indicate that YH-Tang has regulatory effects on cytokine secretion in an acute CI patient.
