Chemical composition and biological activities of essential oil of Beilschmiedia pulverulenta

Destruction of Chitosan and Its Complexes with Cobalt(II) and Copper(II) Tetrasulphophthalocyanines

Chitosan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from chitin with a wide range of uses. Phthalocyanines are macroheterocyclic compounds that have a number of useful properties such as coloring and catalytic and antioxidant activity. Phthalocyanines are able to immobilize on chitosan, forming complexes with new useful properties. In this work, we evaluated the ability of phthalocyanines to increase the thermal stability of chitosan. Chitosan (CS) forms complexes with copper(II)-(CuPc) and cobalt(II)-(CoPc) tetrasulphophthalocyanines. The processes of destruction of chitosan (CS) and its complexes with sulphophthalocyanines CuPc and CoPc in oxidizing and inert atmospheres have been studied. It was established that, regardless of the atmosphere composition, the first chemical reactions taking place in the studied systems are elimination reactions. The latter ones in the case of chitosan and complex CS-CuPc lead to the formation of spatially crosslinked polymer structures, and it causes the release of CuPc from the polymer complex. It was found that in the case of CS-CoPc elimination reactions did not lead to the formation of crosslinked polymer structures but caused the destruction of the pyranose rings with a partial release of CoPc. Metallophthalocyanines showed antioxidant properties in the composition of complexes with chitosan, increasing the temperature of the beginning of glycosidic bond cleavage reaction by 30–35 °C in comparison with the similar characteristics for chitosan.

Potential therapeutic natural products against Alzheimer's disease with Reference of Acetylcholinesterase

Alzheimer's disease (AD), is the most common type of dementia primarily affecting the later years of life. Its prevalence is likely to increase in any aging population and will be a major burden on healthcare system by the mid of the century. Despite scientific and technological breakthroughs in the last 50 years, that have expanded our understanding of the disease on a system, cellular and molecular level, therapies that could stop or slow the progression of the disease are still unavailable. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has approved acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors (donepezil, galantamine, tacrine and rivastigmine) and glutamate receptor antagonist (memantine) for the treatment of AD. In this review we summarize the studies reporting phytocompounds and extracts from medicinal plants that show AChE inhibitory activities and could be of potential benefit in AD. Future research directions are suggested and recommendations made to expand the use of medicinal plants and their formulations to prevent, mitigate and treat AD.

Insights into the inhibitory mechanism and molecular interaction of novel alkaloids from Beilschmiedia glabra with lipoxygenase and acetylcholinesterase

In this study, the mechanism underlying acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and 5-lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibition by two novel alkaloids, beilschglabrine A and beilschglabrine B, as well as their interaction footprints on the binding pockets were investigated. The results showed that beilschglabrine A and beilschglabrine B inhibit both AChE and LOX in a competitive manner by binding to their active sites thereby interfering with substrate access. The interaction of the alkaloids with the enzymes was favorable and stable with low binding energy values which correlate well with their IC[Formula: see text]. The depicted molecular interaction, structure-energetic pattern and binding conformations confirmed that beilschglabrine A is more potent than beilschglabrine B. The differences in the binding pose and potency of the alkaloids is occasioned by an extra methyl moiety on beilschglabrine B. The chemical scaffold of the alkaloids respected Lipinski’s rule of five and may be relevant in the development of new anti-inflammatory and anti-neurodegenerative disease drugs acting via AChE and LOX inhibition.

Chemical investigation and biological activities of the essential oil of Knema kunstleri Warb. from Malaysia

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Knema kunstleri Warb. (Myristicaceae) was investigated for the first time. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and fully characterized by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In total, 36 components were identified in the essential oil, which made up 91.7% of the total oil. The essential oil is composed mainly of β-caryophyllene (23.2%), bicyclogermacrene (9.6%), δ-cadinene (7.3%), α-humulene (5.7%), and germacrene D (4.3%). The essential oil showed moderate activity towards DPPH free-radical scavenging and lipoxygenase inhibition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of the composition and bioactivities of the essential oil report concerning the genus Knema.

Comparative study on the chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oils of three Lagochilus species collected from Uzbekistan

Lagochilus species are mainly distributed in Central Asia and widely used in folk medicine as a sedative and haemostatic. The present investigation reports on the extraction by hydrodistillation and the chemical composition of three Lagochilus species (L. gypsaceus, L. inebrians and L. setulosus) essential oils from Uzbekistan. The chemical composition of these essential oils was determined by GC-MS. The results showed that the studied essential oils are made up mainly of linalool (11.97%), β-ionone (11.75%), trans-chrysanthenyl acetate (7.15%), α-terpineol (7.40%) for L. gypsaceus; trans-chrysanthenyl acetate (9.40%), eugenol (7.01%), trans-verbenol (3.85%), bicyclo[3.1.1]hept-3-en-2-one (3.76%), pinocarvone (3.43%) for L. inebrians; and finally 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenol (19.78%), bicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-en-4-ol (5.43%), hexadecanoic acid (5.39%), limonene (5.19%), 2-hexenal (5.03%) for L. setulosus. The best antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activity was observed for the essential oil of L. inebrians. However, L. setulosus essential oil exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect against amylase.
