Abstract
The present study aims to examine the effects of the MindfulTEA program, an Mindfulness-based Interventions (MBIs) specifically designed for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disability, to reduce behavioural problems. MBIs are effective in improving well-being in people with high-functioning ASD, but little is known about the impact of the MBIs on people with ASD and intellectual disability associated. Fourteen adults (age 18 to 44) with ASD and intellectual disability participated in the program. Results showed a significant decrease in self-injurious and aggressive/destructive behaviours after the MBI. Stereotyped behaviour did not show significant change. Results suggest that the MindfulTEA program could effectively reduce some types of behaviour problems in people with ASD and intellectual disability. MBIs could be a useful alternative to traditional behaviour management interventions for reducing behaviour problems in this population.

Abstract
Youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often display disruptive behavior and noncompliance. Disruptive behavior in youth with ASD may limit their participation in educational and therapeutic activities and impact family functioning. Several evidence-based interventions are available for typically developing children, such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). The current study examined the comparative effectiveness of PCIT for youth with ASD and without ASD. Results indicate that PCIT significantly improves parent-reported disruptive behavior in children with ASD at levels comparable to children without ASD. Additionally, improvements in ASD-related symptoms were noted for youth with ASD. These findings support the use of PCIT for children with ASD and provide clinicians with an evidence-based tool to address disruptive behavior in a wide spectrum of presenting children.

Abstract
Understanding characteristics associated with burden in caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is critical due to negative health consequences. We explored the association between child sensory subtype, sensory dimension scores, and caregiver burden. A national survey of caregivers of children with ASD aged 5-13 years was conducted (n = 367). The relationship between variables of interest and indicators of caregiver burden, including health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and caregiver strain, was examined with canonical correlation analyses. Caregiver strain was, but caregiver HRQOL was not, significantly associated with child sensory subtype and sensory dimension scores. Caregiver age, child age, and household income were also associated with caregiver strain. Potential explanatory mechanisms for these findings, derived from published qualitative studies, are discussed.

Abstract
Many assessment measures have only been validated for one specific diagnostic population, which is costly and reduces the clinical utility of assessments. The Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) is one popular measure designed to assess disruptive behavior problems in youth. The ECBI has sound psychometric properties in typically developing youth, but the factor structure has never been examined in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Therefore, the current study conducted a comprehensive psychometric analysis of the ECBI in children with ASD. Retrospective data from a nationally representative sample was collected from 335 children with ASD ages 2-12 years old. A four factor solution was identified for this sample. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic approved for the treatment of irritability and aggression in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years with autism spectrum disorder. AREAS COVERED This review will discuss the drug profile as well as available studies of aripiprazole in individuals with autism spectrum disorder as documented in prospective randomized controlled trials. Expert commentary: The heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorder has implications for assessing the effectiveness and safety of aripiprazole as it may not produce the same results in two individuals with the same diagnosis but different etiologies. Subgrouping of patients according to their overall presentation of symptoms may therefore be warranted. In addition, consideration should be given to the potential causes of irritability and aggression, such as coexisting medical conditions and environmental factors including inappropriate intervention of parents and teachers. In these cases, the identification of the underlying cause is important because the appropriate management.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have overlapping characteristics and etiological factors, but to which extent this applies to infant- and preschool age is less well understood. Comparing the pathways to ASD and ADHD from the earliest possible stages is crucial for understanding how phenotypic overlap emerges and develops. Ultimately, these insights may guide preventative and therapeutic interventions. Here, we review the literature on the core symptoms, temperament and executive function in ASD and ADHD from infancy through preschool age, and draw several conclusions: (1) the co-occurrence of ASD and ADHD increases with age, severity of symptoms and lower IQ, (2) attention problems form a linking pin between early ASD and ADHD, but the behavioral, cognitive and sensory correlates of these attention problems partly diverge between the two conditions, (3) ASD and ADHD share high levels of negative affect, although the underlying motivational and behavioral tendencies seem to differ, and (4) ASD and ADHD share difficulties with control and shifting, but partly opposite behaviors seem to be involved.

Abstract
Methodological issues impacting the relationship between aggression and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped behaviors and interests (RRSBI) were examined in 2648 children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) using a multi-method, multi-informant analysis model to assess the effects of informant, assessment method, and aggression phenotype. Overall, a significant, but small relationship was found between RRSBI and aggression (p < .05). There was significant heterogeneity of estimates with large effect sizes observed when utilizing teacher report and a broad phenotype of aggression. Variance in estimates was attributed to differences in informant and assessment method with two times greater effect attributed to informant. Results suggest strategies to optimize future investigations of the relationship between RRSBI and aggression. Findings also provide the opportunity for the development of targeted interventions for aggression in youth with ASD.

Abstract
Aggressive behavior problems (ABP) are frequent yet poorly understood in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and are likely to co-vary significantly with comorbid problems. We examined the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of ABP in a clinical sample of children with ASD (N = 400; 2-16.9 years). We also investigated whether children with ABP experience more intensive medical interventions, greater impairments in behavioral functioning, and more severe comorbid problems than children with ASD who do not have ABP. One in four children with ASD had Child Behavior Checklist scores on the Aggressive Behavior scale in the clinical range (T-scores ≥ 70). Sociodemographic factors (age, gender, parent education, race, ethnicity) were unrelated to ABP status. The presence of ABP was significantly associated with increased use of psychotropic drugs and melatonin, lower cognitive functioning, lower ASD severity, and greater comorbid sleep, internalizing, and attention problems. In multivariate models, sleep, internalizing, and attention problems were most strongly associated with ABP. These comorbid problems may hold promise as targets for treatment to decrease aggressive behavior and proactively identify high-risk profiles for prevention.

Abstract
Although function-based interventions have been shown to be effective, the methods utilised to carry out functional behaviour assessments (FBA) have practical limitations. This study explored the relative utility and feasibility of three FBA methods in a school setting to inform a function-based intervention to reduce problem behaviour in a boy with autism. The study consisted of (1) indirect and direct assessments, (2) a modified functional analysis, and (3) the intervention. New video technology, Behavior Capture, was trialled to facilitate data collection in the classroom. All methods contributed to identifying the function of the problematic behaviour, though only the functional analysis provided conclusive results. A peer-mediated intervention based on these findings conducted in the school playground reduced the problem behaviours. All FBA methods could be applied in the school setting and provided useful information. Novel technology was helpful in facilitating data collection. A naturalistic intervention was successful in reducing problem behaviours and increasing play skills.

Abstract
Functional assessment has now entered the mainstream for evaluation and to aid in the treatment of challenging behaviors, while experimental functional analysis was at the forefront of this movement, this particular methodology has proven to be impractical, and thus has limited utility in real world settings. As a result of these factors standardized test have become a popular alternative for making a functional assessment. The most extensively studied of these scales to date is the Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF). This paper reviews the available research on this scale, its current status, and future directions.

Abstract
Challenging behaviors are frequently studied in individuals with various developmental disabilities, although specific conditions are rarely compared to one another. Such data would be informative to clinicians who assess and develop treatment plans for children with these disabilities. For that reason, the current study's aim was to analyze problem behavior deficits in infants and toddlers diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP), Down syndrome (DS), and a history of seizures/seizure disorder. Seventy six children participated in this study and were administered the Baby and Infant Screen for Children with aUtIsm Traits-Part 2 (BISCUIT-Part 2). Inspection of the Tantrum/Conduct Behavior subscale of this measure revealed that children with a history of seizures/seizure disorder exhibited significantly higher scores, indicating greater impairment, than those with CP or DS. Children with DS and those diagnosed with CP did not significantly differ from one another. Additionally, there was no significant main effect by gender. The CP and DS groups also had fewer endorsements on all 18 items of the subscale as compared to the seizures group. Implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract
Autism and the related pervasive developmental disorders are a heavily researched group of neurodevelopmental conditions. In addition to core symptoms, there are a number of other physical and motor conditions that co-occur at high rates. This paper provides a review of factors and behaviors that correlate highly with disorders on the autism spectrum. Among these conditions are premature birth, birth defects, gross and fine motor skills, and obesity. Each of these topics is addressed, and what researchers have found are presented. These data have important implications for the types of collateral behaviors that should be assessed and treated, along with the core symptoms of autism.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorders are characterized by impairment in social reciprocity, disturbances in language and communication, restricted interests and repetitive behaviors of various types, as defined by the DSM-IV. The neurobiological bases of these disorders are poorly understood, although several abnormalities have been found. Pharmacotherapy in autism spectrum disorders lacks a solid, reliable neurobiological basis and at present it is mainly directed at the so-called associated behavioral symptoms, with limited relevance to core symptoms. Atypical neuroleptics, especially risperidone, have been shown to be useful in the treatment of behavioral symptoms in autism. Recent trials with SSRIs did not show remarkable results, in spite of their promising potential role. Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder medications may be useful for counteracting the additional features of hyperactivity and short attention span. Antiepileptics have shown promising results but there are no specific indications for them as of yet. Research is now directed at evaluating novel treatments and combined behavioral and pharmacologic treatments, since behavioral interventions are the mainstay of the early treatment of autism. An update of currently available pharmacological treatments is provided.
