Abstract
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the important role veterinarians play as public health communicators and emphasized the importance of engaging veterinary students in epidemiology and public health curriculum, the majority of whom have a clinical focus and struggle to see their relevance in relation to future career plans. To enhance student engagement, second-year DVM students were asked to create a one-page risk communication handout centered on a zoonotic disease and organized with public health message mapping. Informed by the distribution of students' self-declared career plans at admission to the DVM program, students were asked to choose from a list of zoonotic pathogens previously covered in the DVM curriculum and to select a relevant focus species and expected lay audience member. This assignment was scaffolded with previous infectious disease and communication coursework and provided an opportunity for all students to engage with public health material regardless of prior interest or knowledge. Students chose 13 of 15 zoonotic diseases provided, and their species and audience focuses were distributed across previously stated career focuses, including companion animals, food producing animals, exotic animals, and wildlife. Providing options relevant to diverse student experiences and connecting the assignment to clinical competencies supported student autonomy and engagement in public health content outside clinically focused core classes. Students' successful delivery of constructive peer feedback indicated their engagement with the public health course material, integration of learning from other parts of the curriculum, and perceived relevance of the assignment to their future career focus.

Abstract
This study compared the risk perceptions of medical disputes among veterinarians and veterinary students in Taiwan between 2014 and 2022. Online validity-tested questionnaires were used to collect data, with 106 (73 veterinarians and 33 students) and 157 (126 veterinarians and 31 students) surveys collected in 2014 and 2022, respectively. Respondents would be asked to rate their perceptions on how likely each risk factor constitutes a medical dispute according to their past experiences on a five-point Likert scale from 1 to 5: “Very unlikely, unlikely, neutral, likely, very likely.” The results showed that overall risk perceptions increased significantly in 2022 compared to 2014, with the top risk factors being attitudes during interactions and complaint management among experienced veterinarians. In contrast, students considered medical skills and clients’ perspectives as the top two risk factors, with complaints management ranking as the least significant factor. The findings suggest that effective communication and complaint management are crucial in preventing medical disputes, highlighting the importance of developing these skills in young veterinarians and veterinary students to reduce medical disputes. The study also recommends increasing practical experiences of medical disputes and complaint management in veterinary education to bridge the gap between the perceptions of experienced veterinarians and students.

Abstract
The American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education mandates in standard 11 that all accredited colleges of veterinary medicine must develop and deliver formal processes by which students are observed and assessed in nine competencies. The eighth competency combines clinical communication and sensitivity toward soliciting and understanding individual narratives across a diverse clientele to facilitate health care delivery. Several frameworks have been designed to structure health care consultations for teaching and coaching purposes. The Calgary-Cambridge guide (CCG) provides an evidence-based approach to outlining the flow of consultations, incorporating foundational communication skills and elements of relationship-centered care into a series of sequential tasks. Although the CCG was intended for use as a flexible tool kit, it lacks visible connections between concrete experiences (e.g., the consultation) and reflective observation (e.g., the feedback). This teaching tip describes the development of a novel anatomical representation of the consultation that integrates process elements of the CCG with other core curricular concepts. By combining knowledge, technical skills, critical thinking, reflection, cultural humility, and self-awareness into a skeletal consultation model, linkages are established between communication and intergroup dialogue skills, diversity and inclusion (D&I). This model has been further adapted as feline, caprine, porcine, equine, avian, and reptilian versions for in-class use as strategic visual aids that highlight key areas of focus for Professional Skills class sessions. Future developments by the authors will explore how to link species-specific consultation models to assessment rubrics to reinforce the connection between content (what) and process (how).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the impact of a communication program on a cohort of veterinary students' knowledge and performance of communication skills. SAMPLE Class cohort of veterinary students at Colorado State University. PROCEDURES Year 3 students' knowledge of communication skills was evaluated using quizzes, administered before and after the fall 2016 and spring 2017 Clinical Communication Skills-I and II junior practicum. In year 4, student performance of 22 Calgary-Cambridge Guide communication skills was assessed by coding video-recordings of student-client interactions collected during their second and fourth weeks of the Community Practice rotation in the summer and fall of 2017 and spring of 2018. The impact of training, association with demographic factors, and correlation between knowledge and performance of communication skills were investigated. RESULTS In year 3, 136 students completed both fall and spring quizzes; in year 4, 65 week-2 and 29 week-4 appointments were video-recorded during Community Practice rotation. Students' knowledge assessed via quizzes containing skill spotting and skill demonstrating questions increased significantly after the fall and spring junior practicums; however, knowledge of communication skills was not associated with performance during year 4 Community Practice rotations. Communication skills most frequently demonstrated by students during the fourth year Community Practice rotation were open-ended questions, closed-ended questions, empathy toward the client and patient, providing "chunks" of information, and signposting. Students received high quality scores for non-verbal behaviors and logical clinical interview structure. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest that experiential learning techniques, including a flipped classroom approach, role-play, and communication laboratories contributed to increased student knowledge of communication skills.

Abstract
Learning theories are abstract descriptions which help us make sense of educational practice. Multiple theories can inform our understanding of a single concept, in this case: veterinary workplace clinical training (WCT), which occurs just prior to students' graduation as competent veterinary surgeons. The competency movement has strongly influenced reforms in veterinary education and is considered important. In reflection of this, the term “preparedness” is operationalised here as a measure of the likelihood that the veterinary student is going to be a competent learner and participant during WCT. Preparedness itself is therefore important because it directly impacts performance. Workplace clinical training is explored through the lenses of cognitivist, social constructivist and socio-culturalist learning theories and used to inform student preparedness characteristics (“tools”) in terms of their behaviours, personal attributes, knowledge and skills, and awarenesses to optimise learning and participation. These form a new conceptual framework—the “Preparedness Toolkit.”

Abstract
Effective communication skills serve as a key component of excellent veterinary care and provide a foundation for building trusting relationships with clients. While many veterinary clients value their pets for companionship, the focus of other relationships may be based on a partnership between the human and animal, as is the case with the handlers of service dogs. As the use of service dogs in the US continues to grow, it is important that veterinary professionals are educated on how best to meet the unique needs of service dogs and their handlers. This article evaluates the interactions of veterinary students with a service dog handler in a simulated client scenario. Ten videotaped interactions were coded to assess third-year students' communication skills (nonverbal communication, open-ended questions, reflective listening, and empathy), and their ability to discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic options for a dog with suspected intervertebral disk disease. Results showed that the majority of students demonstrated competence in the use of nonverbal communication skills and in discussing the biomedical aspects of the disease. Students require development in the use of open-ended questions, reflective listening statements, and expression of empathy, as well as building client rapport and discussing the psychosocial aspect of the disease on the client and patient. These findings suggest that veterinary students may benefit from targeted instruction on "best practices" in caring for service dogs and their handlers, including greater attention to the psychosocial aspects of a disease, and from additional communication practice using standardized clients with service dogs.

Abstract
Communication skills are a core competence in veterinary medicine. These skills play a pivotal role in professional success in the animal health professions. Over the last few decades, there has been an increased focus on communication skills in veterinary curricula. Conversely, we know less about the knowledge and motivation behind the communication skills of those veterinarians in different work domains who are acting as mentors outside the university. In 2016, semi-structured interviews (n = 16) were conducted with German practitioners in workplaces ranging from companion to farm animal practice, and throughout the veterinary industry, veterinary research, and government service. We combined two qualitative methods: a thematic analysis approach and the generation of types to identify characteristics associated with the acquisition of communication skills. In the current study, three main themes were developed: "Motivation," "Experiences with the acquisition of communication skills," and "Communication skills training during formal education." Within the identified themes, we recognized three types of communicators: "self-experienced," "extrinsic-experienced," and "unexperienced." We found that acquisition of communication skills was closely linked to motivation; therefore, motivation must be considered when developing communication skills curricula for learners and educators. By extrapolating the findings of this explorative study, we determined that intrinsically motivated mentors from the field should be a main source of veterinary education to promote further development in communication training. This qualitative study also determined that most non-university veterinary mentors had only a basic knowledge of teaching and learning communication skills, leading us to recommend formal training. Interchange between practicing veterinarians and veterinary educators and curriculum coordinators can foster relevant curricular modifications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe how North American veterinary medical teaching institutions (VMTIs) provide communication skills training to students. SAMPLE Faculty coordinators of communication skills training programs (CSTPs) at 30 North American VMTIs. PROCEDURES An online survey instrument was designed and administered to each respondent followed by a telephone (n = 28) or in-person (2) interview. The survey and interview process were designed to evaluate all aspects of CSTPs, such as communication framework used, program format, number of student-contact hours, staffing models, outcome assessment, faculty background, program priorities, and challenges. Descriptive results were generated, and guidelines for future development of CSTPs were recommended. RESULTS 27 US and 3 Canadian VMTIs were represented, and communication skills training was required at all. Twenty-five CSTPs used the Calgary-Cambridge Guide framework. Respondents provided a mean of 33 student-contact hours of training, primarily in the first 3 years of the veterinary curriculum in lecture (mean, 12 hours), communication laboratory (13 hours), and self-study (8 hours) formats with formative feedback. Communication skills training was integrated with other disciplines at 27 VMTIs. Most CSTPs were coordinated and taught by 1 faculty member with a < 0.50 full-time equivalent commitment and no administrative support. Stated priorities included acquisition of resources for CSTP faculty, administrative support, and video-equipped facilities; increasing integration of CSTPs into curricula; and assessment of educational outcomes. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggested that support for CSTPs and recognition of their value continue to grow, but a lack of resources, faculty expertise, validated methods for outcomes assessment, and leadership remain challenges.

Abstract
Empathy is a requisite clinical skill for health professionals and empathy scores have been positively associated with professionalism, clinical competency, confidence, well-being, and emotional intelligence. In order to improve empathy in the veterinary field, it is critical to measure the construct of empathy accurately. Most research has relied on self-reporting measures to assess empathy, while some studies have recently implemented the use of simulated client encounters in veterinary education. Building on this research, the aim of the current study was to develop and validate a novel quantitative assessment tool-the Empathy Clinical Evaluation Exercise (ECEX)-designed to measure empathy based on directly observable behaviors, using simulated clients. To evaluate empathy, evaluators used the ECEX to assess the performance of student clinicians in a simulated client encounter, which contained a pre-determined number of opportunities designed to elicit empathic responses from student clinicians. Statistical analysis suggests the test has a high degree of inter-rater reliability. In addition, there was moderate correlation between average empathy scores using ECEX and previously validated measures of empathy, compassion satisfaction, and burnout. Using these methods, we found the majority of students we studied had increased empathy scores at the completion of their primary care rotations. These results provide preliminary support for the use of the ECEX as a direct and quantitative tool for the assessment of empathy. Health professionals could use this novel empathy assessment tool to teach students, evaluate teaching strategies, and improve communication competencies in a wide variety of clinical settings. Our broad aim was to examine the utility of a direct and quantitative assessment tool for measuring empathy-the ECEX-in order to answer the following questions: (1) Does the tool have good inter-rater reliability? (2) Does the tool correlate with previously validated empathy measures? and (3) Does the tool correlate with similar constructs of compassion fatigue and burnout? Our secondary aim was to evaluate the change in empathy scores over the course of a 4-month (16-week) primary care rotation (pre- to -post).

Abstract
Over the past several decades, non-technical competencies have been given an increasing amount of emphasis in veterinary medical training. However, additional research is needed to continue understanding the role that non-technical competencies play in veterinary success and wellness. An inter-related pair of non-technical competencies that needs further empirical investigation is communication and the influence of compassion on veterinarians. This research study investigated the relationship between compassion experiences and communication styles of fourth-year veterinarians-in-training using a canonical correlation analysis. The compassion fatigue resilience (CFR) model was the theoretical framework used to conceptualize how communication behaviors may contribute to compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. Compassion experiences were measured using a version of the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale. Communication style was measured using the Communication Styles Inventory (CSI). Results indicated that communication style is statistically significantly related to compassion experiences (n = 281; Function 1, Rc = .552, p < .001; Function 2, Rc = .369, p < .001). Compassion fatigue was found to have a statistically significant association with the communication styles of emotionality (r = .467, p < .001), impression manipulativeness (r = .191, p = .001), and verbal aggressiveness (r = .239, p = .001). Results indicated support for veterinary training programs to continue adapting their curricula to include communication training and intervention programs to address communication and compassion fatigue, as well as to consider how the relationship between these two constructs may influence the wellness and success of veterinarians-in-training and veterinarians. More research is needed to understand the role of impression manipulativeness in veterinary wellness.
