Abstract
Early lactation is a critical period for dairy cows as energy requirements rapidly increase with the onset of lactation, however, early lactation dry matter intakes (DMI) in pasture-based systems are under-measured. The objectives of this study were 1) to measure and profile total DMI (TDMI) and animal performance of dairy cows during early lactation in a pasture-based system 2) to investigate early lactation energy balance in pasture-based systems and 3) to examine production efficiencies including TDMI and milk solids production per 100 kg bodyweight. Eighty spring-calving dairy cows were allocated to a grazing group as they calved over a 2 year period (2021 and 2022). Cows were offered a daily herbage allowance to achieve a post-grazing sward height of 4 cm with silage supplementation when necessary due to inclement weather. Total DMI was measured using the n-alkane technique over a 12 week period from 1st of February to the 23rd of April. Total DMI and daily milk yield were significantly affected by parity with both variables being greatest for third parity animals (17.7 kg DM and 26.3 kg/cow/day, respectively), lowest for first parity (13.2 kg DM and 19.6 kg/cow/day, respectively) and intermediate for second parity animals (16.8 kg DM and 24.1 kg/cow/day, respectively). Peak TDMI was reached on wk 10 for first parity animals (14.6 kg DM), wk 11 for second parity animals (19.3 kg DM) and wk 12 for third parity animals (19.9 kg DM). Parity also had a significant effect on UFL (feed units for milk) feed balance as first parity animals experienced a greater degree of negative energy balance (-3.2 UFL) compared with second and third parity animals (-2.3 UFL). Breed and parity had an effect on production efficiencies during the first 12 weeks of lactation as Jersey x Holstein Friesian cows had greater TDMI/100 kg bodyweight and milk solids/100 kg bodyweight compared with Holstein Friesian cows.

Abstract
Pair housing of pre-weaning dairy calves has previously demonstrated positive impacts on their growth, health and behaviour, but longer-term effects on production are still relatively unknown. This study followed a cohort of 431 Holstein heifers, recruited from a single UK commercial dairy farm, from weaning until either culling or the end of their first lactation. All animals were allocated to either individual or pair housing as a pre-weaning calf. Following weaning, all heifers were similarly managed through group housing, feeding with total mixed rations, the use of automatic heat detection for artificial insemination and weighing every two months until conception. Farm staff identified disease occurrences, which were treated following standard operating procedures. First-lactation monthly milk recording was used to measure milk yields and somatic cell counts. Overall mortality (voluntary and involuntary) was 26.6%, with a decreased hazard of exiting the herd if the heifer was pair housed as a calf (HR 0.70; p = 0.067). The voluntary cull rate was highest in the post-insemination period (13.0%) due to poor fertility. Heifers that were pair housed as calves had significantly increased odds of developing udder health issues as a primiparous cow (OR = 1.93, p = 0.022). Despite this, the 305-day milk yields were not associated with the housing group. However, the total milk produced per calf recruited into the original study was greater for pair-housed compared with individually housed calves (8088 kg vs. 7115 kg; p = 0.071), which is likely due to the significantly higher hazard of individually housed calves exiting the herd prematurely.

Abstract
The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to determine the association between insemination eligibility and reproductive performance of nulliparous heifers with subsequent body weight (BW) at 30 d in milk (DIM) and milk production at wk 4, 8, and 12 of lactation of primiparous cows. The final data set included 1,849 primiparous Holstein cows from a commercial dairy herd. Data extracted from a commercial dairy herd management software program included parent average predicted transmitting abilities (PTA), bovine respiratory disease (BRD) incidence, pregnancies per artificial insemination (P/AI) at first insemination as nulliparous heifers, BW at 30 DIM, percent mature body weight (%MBW), and mean weekly milk production at wk 4, 8, and 12 of lactation. Heifers were eligible for first insemination at 380 d of age and were detected in estrus and artificially inseminated with sexed semen. Quartiles based on BW at 30 DIM and %MBW were created in ascending order as follows: Q1 (lightest; n = 462), Q2 (light-moderate; n = 456), Q3 (moderate; n = 472), and Q4 (heaviest; n = 459). Only Q3 and Q4 cows achieved ≥85% MBW postcalving based on the herd MBW of 686.2 kg. The incidence of BRD during heifer development was greatest for Q1 cows, and Q1 cows had fewer days on feed as heifers than Q4 cows, resulting in a shorter growth period to achieve ≥85% MBW postcalving. Overall, Q1 cows had a greater PTA for daughter pregnancy rate and heifer conception rate than Q4 cows, which was associated with approximately 26 percentage points more P/AI at first insemination as heifers for Q1 than for Q4 cows. Finally, Q1 cows yielded approximately 5 kg per cow/d less milk than Q4 cows. Thus, insemination eligibility and reproductive performance of heifers, calfhood BRD incidence, and genetic potential for reproductive performance were associated with BW at 30 DIM and milk production at wk 4, 8, and 12 of lactation of primiparous cows.

Abstract
Selection pressure for greater milk solid production, calving ease and early puberty attainment has resulted in the alteration of the growth trajectory of New Zealand dairy heifers. Although previous data have looked at stature growth in terms of height and girth, changes in the growth trajectory as a result of seasonal growth has not been examined. In addition, the relative contributions of the appendicular skeleton and thorax in relation to height have not been considered in previous studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine how the proportional contributions of stature change with increases in live weight in Holstein–Friesian, Jersey and Holstein–Friesian–Jersey crossbred heifers from birth to 23 months of age (just prior to calving). Comparisons of height, length, girth and distal and proximal forelimb length (stature) revealed that at the same live weight, measures of girth, length and height did not differ between breeds (p < 0.05). As live weight increases, the relative contribution of the distal limb to increasing height decreases, which is consistent with the cessation of physeal growth occurring earlier in the bones of the distal limb than in the proximal limb. By understanding the timing of proximal and distal growth in dairy heifers, the effect of seasonal growth on longitudinal bone growth can be identified.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the rumination time, activity index, milk yield (MY), physicochemical milk characteristics, and physiological indicators of pure Holstein (H) and first (F1- ½ Holstein × Jersey) and second-generation (R1- ¾ Holstein × ¼ Jersey) of crossbred cows in a pasture-based system under the influence of different temperature-humidity indexes (THI). Twenty-two multiparous cows (H = 7, F1 = 5, and R1 = 10) were evaluated throughout 1-year period. Daily information on rumination time and activity index was obtained using the software HealthyCow24® and the daily THI was determined from data logger information. Weekly, MY, physicochemical milk characteristics, body weight, body condition score, and physiological indicators were evaluated. THI were grouped into six classes from safe (< 68) to emergency (≥ 84). Variance analyses were performed. There was no interaction between the genetic group and THI classes for any trait. The rumination time was longer for crossbred R1 and F1 cows than for Holstein cows. The activity index increased, and rumination time decreased as the THI classes increased. There was no difference in MY between the genetic groups, but crossbred cows showed higher milk fat and protein content. Our study indicated that the high THI increases the activity index and decreases the rumination time, MY, and the physicochemical quality of milk, BW, BCS, RF, and RT of the three genetic groups (H, F1, and R1).

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of supplementing rumen-protected Lys based on a Lys-deficient diet on liver metabolism in growing Holstein heifers. The experiment was conducted for 3 months with 36 Holstein heifers (initial body weight: 200 ± 9.0 kg; 7-month-old). Heifers were randomly assigned to 2 diets based on corn, soybean meal, alfalfa hay, and wheat bran: control, Lys-deficient diet (LD; 0.66% Lys in diet), and Lys-adequate diet (LA; 1.00% Lys in diet). The results showed no difference in growth performance between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). However, there was a clear trend of increasing feed conversion rate with Lys supplementation (0.05 < P < 0.01). The serum urea nitrogen concentration was significantly decreased, and the aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio was significantly decreased by Lys supplementation (P < 0.05). Moreover, growing heifers fed a Lys-adequate diet had lower levels of urine nitrogen excretion and higher levels of the biological value of nitrogen (P < 0.05). Metabolomic analysis revealed that 5 types of phosphatidylcholine and 3 types of ceramide were significantly increased and enriched in sphingolipid metabolism and glycerophospholipid metabolism (P < 0.05). His, Leu, and Asp levels were significantly decreased in the liver following Lys supplementation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, Lys supplementation may promote the synthesis of body tissue proteins, as evidenced by significantly decreased amino acids in the liver and urine N excretion, it also improves hepatic lipid metabolism by providing lipoprotein precursors.

Abstract
Keeping replacement heifers that were the progeny of primiparous cows mated by artificial insemination enhances rates of genetic gain. Previous research has shown that heifers that were the progeny of primiparous cows were lighter at birth and grew at a slower rate to first calving compared with heifers born to multiparous dams. Furthermore, heifers that were heavier before first calving produced more milk than did lighter heifers. This study aimed to determine whether there were body weight, milk production, or reproductive disadvantages for heifers born from primiparous compared with multiparous dams. Data comprised body weight records from 189,936 New Zealand dairy heifers. Dams were allocated to 4 groups according to their age: 2 yr old (n = 13,717), 3 yr old (n = 39,258), 4 to 8 yr old (n = 120,859), and 9 yr or older (n = 16,102). Heifers that were the progeny of 2-yr-old dams were lighter from 3 to 21 mo of age than heifers that were the progeny of 3-yr-old and 4- to 8-yr-old dams. The progeny of 2- and 3-yr-old dams produced similar milk solids yields (± standard error of the mean) during their first lactation (304.9 ± 1.6 and 304.1 ± 1.5 kg, respectively), but more than that of 4- to 8-yr-old dams (302.4 ± 1.5). Furthermore, the progeny of 2-yr-old dams had similar stayabilities to first, second, and third calving to that of the progeny of 4- to 8-yr-old and ≥9-yr-old dams. Reproductive performance, as measured by calving and recalving rates was similar in first-calving heifers of all age-of-dam classes. Additionally, second and third calving rates were similar for the progeny of 2- and 3-yr-old dams. Interestingly, the progeny of dams ≥9 yr old had the lowest milk solids production in first (297.8 ± 1.6 kg), second (341.6 ± 1.8 kg), and third lactations (393.2 ± 2.4 kg). Based on the results of this study, keeping replacements from dams aged 9 yr and over could not be recommended. Furthermore, heifers born to 2-yr-old dams were lighter but produced more milk than heifers from older dams, in addition to having superior genetic merit.

Abstract
As part of the development of a breeding programme for dairy goats to support sustainable production in organic farming, the overall aim of the present study was to identify traits that can be used as selection criteria for lifetime productivity. The breeding goal is high lifetime productivity with a good milk composition and a good level of robustness in the animals, especially within grazing systems. The lifetime productivity traits analysed in this study were the length of the animal's productive life (LPL), the lifetime efficiency (LEF), and the animal's milk yield efficiency with respect the total number of lactating days (EDM); the average fat and protein content over the animal's lifetime, the fat-to-protein ratio (FPR), and the urea content (UC) were also included as indirect health traits and potential indicators of robustness in dairy goats. The traits' influencing factors, phenotypic and genetic correlations, and heritability were examined. Furthermore, factors influencing milk yield in the first 120 d of lactation during the animal's first lactation were analysed. The aim of investigating milk yield during the first lactation was to consider a connection between early performance recoding in the life of an animal and LPL, LEF, and EDM. In total, lactation and pedigree data from 9192 dairy goats of the common German Fawn (GF) and German White (GW) dairy breeds were used. Prerequisites were that the investigated birth cohorts had to have definitively completed their lifetime production, and a high proportion of goats had to have completed extended lactation. The data analysis showed that breed did not influence milk yield. The age at first kidding, the average number of kids born during the animal's lifetime, and the lactation length did influence the milk yield. This applies to the milk yield during the first 120 d of the first lactation as well as over the lifetime of an animal. Considering the influencing factors, the results showed that LPL was genetically and positively correlated with LEF and EDM ( r g = 0.65 ± 0.06 and 0.29 ± 0.07 respectively). The heritability of LPL, LEF, and EDM was 0.22 ± 0.02 , 0.29 ± 0.03 , and 0.44 ± 0.03 respectively. Regarding the lifetime milk composition, the heritability of protein and fat content, FPR, and UC was 0.63 ± 0.02 , 0.52 ± 0.02 , 0.32 ± 0.03 , and 0.47 ± 0.04 respectively. The heritability regarding the milk yield during the first 120 d of the first lactation was 0.34 ± 0.03 . We found that the milk yield during the first 120 d of the first lactation showed a genetic correlation with LPL, LEF, and EDM of 0.30 ± 0.08 , 0.82 ± 0.04 , and 0.89 ± 0.03 respectively. In summary, LPL, LEF, and EDM are suitable traits to indicate lifetime productivity in dairy goats. An additional indicator for lifetime productivity could be the milk yield during the first 120 d of the first lactation. Moreover, FPR and UC appear to be promising indicator traits for the health and robustness of dairy goats. The present study showed the importance of considering extended lactation in selective breeding programmes as well as the importance of modelling extended lactation in the breeding value estimation.

Abstract
Background and Aim: The market demand for the quality of milk and dairy products, in particular in terms of such indicators as fat content, the amount and composition of milk protein, etc., is growing. Thus, the need for the selection of dairy herds using genetic markers associated with qualitative traits of milk productivity is becoming urgent. This study aimed to determine the preferred and undesirable genotypes of the AluI polymorphism of the growth hormone gene and SnaBI polymorphism of the insulin-like growth factor-1 gene associated with milk productivity and quality indicators of the black-and-white breed. The genotypes of animals were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Materials and Methods: Samples of the black-and-white breed from Kazakhstan served as the research subjects. The polymorphism of the growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 genes was determined by PCR-RFLP. The relationship of bGH-AluI and bIGF-1-SnaBI polymorphisms with productivity was assessed (fat, protein, and milk yield for 305 days of lactation, live weight, somatic cells, and milk production coefficient) by analysis of variance using Statistica 6.0 software. Results: The black-and-white cows with the bGH-AluILV genotype had significantly higher milk yield in 305 days (3174.5±157.2 kg) than those with the bGH-AluILL (2940.0±152.6 kg) and bGH-AluIVV genotypes (2964.0±36.0; p<0.05). The milk fat content of cows with genotypes bGH-AluILV and bGH-AluILL (121.8±6.5 and 120.6±10.2, respectively) was significantly higher than those with bGH-AluIVV genotype (109.8±10.8; p<0.05). The black-and-white cows with the bGH-AluILV genotype (96.7±5.3) had significantly more milk protein than those with the bGH-AluILL (90.3±5.6) and bGH-AluIVV (86.9±4.6) genotypes (p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the indicators of milk productivity of cows with different genotypes of bIGF-1-SnaBI polymorphism. Conclusion: The results showed that the bGH-AluILV genotype was preferred for the black-and-white breed. The study demonstrated that genotype determined the relevant qualities, while the conditions of feeding, maintenance, and industrial technology provided the manifestation of this genotype. Thus, cows of the same (Wis Burke Ideal) line, having common ancestors in close (IV–V) ranks but living in different farming conditions, had large differences in milk productivity level. The variation was 2046 kg or 67.6% of milk per lactation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop and validate equations for estimating growth of dairy heifers using measures of withers height, body weight (BW), and age. Measures of BW and withers height of 207 Holstein heifers raised in a tropical climate were taken from birth to calving, totaling to 2,047 observations. To be included in the database, the heifer had to have at least 4 measures recorded. After that, 4 models were built and evaluated as follows: (1) a linear model of BW as function of age (BW~A), (2) a linear model of the BW-to-height ratio as function of age (BW:H~A), (3) a quadratic model, adjusted for a defined plateau, to describe height as function of age (H~A), and (4) an exponential growth model of BW as function of height (BW~H). A cross-validation procedure was performed to evaluate accuracy and precision of the models. The linear relationship of BW~A and BW:H~A were estimated, respectively, by the equations: BW = 42.65 + 0.62 × A and BW:H = 0.70 + 0.0041 × A, where BW is in kilograms, BW:H = BW-to-height ratio (kg/cm), and A = age (d). Using the quadratic plateau for the model H~A, a critical "x" value of ~806 d and a height plateau of 138.6 cm were identified. Therefore, the following equations for estimating the height of animals younger and older than 806 d, respectively, were developed: H = 78.15 + 0.150 × A - 0.00009 × A2 and H = 78.15 + 0.150 × cvx - 0.00009 × cvx2, where H = height (cm) and cvx = 806 (critical "x" value; given in days). Additionally, the exponential model of W~H was estimated by the following equation: BW = 4.25 × exp(0.034 ×H), where BW is in kilograms and H = height (cm). A cross validation demonstrated that all equations had very high accuracy and precision. Overall, these models demonstrated that BW and BW-to-height ratio increase linearly as a function of age, while BW follows an exponential growth pattern as a function of height. Additionally, the H~A model predicted that heifers achieve a maximum height of 138.6 cm at 806 d of age.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the association of body weight (BW) at first calving (BWFC) and maturity rate (MR; BWFC as a percentage of mature BW) with first-lactation 305-d milk yield (FLMY), milk yield (MY) in the 24 mo following first calving (24MMY), herd life, and BW change (BWC) through the first month of lactation in Holstein heifers. We retrieved daily milk production records and daily BW records from AfiFarm (S. A. E. Afikim, Kibbutz Afikim, Israel). The data set included daily records for 1,110 Holstein cows from The Pennsylvania State University (n = 435,002 records) and 1,229 Holstein cows from University of Florida (n = 462,013 records) that calved from 2001 to 2016. Body weight at first calving was defined as mean BW from 5 to 10 d in milk of the first lactation, whereas BWC represented change from BWFC to average BW from 30 to 40 d in milk. First-lactation 305-d MY and 24MMY were analyzed with a linear model that included effects of farm-year-season of calving, age at calving, and quintiles of BWFC, MR, or BWC. Body weight change was analyzed with the same model to determine associations with BWFC. Survival analysis was performed to estimate the effect of BWFC on survival. Heifers in the top 60% of BWFC had significantly higher FLMY (10,041 to 10,084 kg) than lighter heifers (9,683 to 9,917 kg), but there was wide variation in every quintile, and no relationship of BWFC and FLMY existed within the top 60%. Relationships between BWFC and 24MMY were not significant. Heifers with higher BWFC or MR lost significantly more BW in early lactation. Although BWFC and MR were significant predictors of FLMY, they accounted for <3% of variation in FLMY or 24MMY, suggesting that BWFC and MR are not primary contributors to variation in MY. Compared with the lightest heifers, the heaviest heifers were 49% more likely to be culled at a given time. These data indicated that, among heifers managed similarly, heavier heifers produced more milk in first lactation than lighter heifers but lost more BW, faced a higher risk of being culled, and did not produce more milk in the long term. Based on our data, heifers that reach between 73 and 77% MR at first calving can produce more milk in their first lactation without sacrificing long-term MY and herd life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study aimed to describe growth parameters and to quantify the association between linear body measurements as predictors of liveweight (LW) of Holstein-Friesian (HF), and HF crossbred dairy calves in Queensland. A secondary objective was to quantify the effect of disease events on LW change. STUDY DESIGN Longitudinal study. METHODS Fortnightly LW, hip height (HH), hip width (HW) and heart girth (HG) measurements were recorded from 16 male and 28 female HF calves from birth until weaning. The association between linear body measurement and the effect of a disease event on LW change were explored using linear mixed-effects modelling with random intercepts and random slopes. RESULTS HG was the best body measure used individually as a predictor of calf LW (R2 = 82%; P < 0.001), while the combined use of HG, HW and HH was the most accurate predictor of calf LW between birth and weaning (R2 = 90%; P < 0.001). HW, average feed intake and total feed intake were significantly affected by disease events (P < 0.05). On average, total average LW loss associated with a single pneumonia event was estimated at 14.6 kg (95% CI = 10.5 to 18.7 kg; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Calves of this study performed at a level consistent with the previously published reports. Growth performance was significantly compromised by pneumonia. HW was found to be the least predictive individual measure, and the combined use of HH, HW and HG had the most accurate prediction of calf liveweight from birth to weaning.

Abstract
Aims: To examine the relationship between liveweight (LWT) at 12 months as a proportion of LWT at 21 months of age (LWT(12/21)%) and first lactation and cumulative 3-year milk production in dairy heifers in New Zealand. Methods: Liveweight and milk production records were obtained for dairy heifers born from June to December (spring-calving season) between 2006-2007 and 2013-2014 dairy seasons; production records included first lactation (n = 140,113) and cumulative 3-year (n = 67,833) milksolids and energy-corrected milk (ECM) yields. Heifers were classified into five breed groups; Holstein-Friesian, Holstein-Friesian crossbred, Jersey, Jersey crossbred and Holstein-Friesian-Jersey crossbred. Within each breed group heifers were categorised into quintiles based on 21-month LWT. The LWT(12/21)% was calculated for each animal. Relationships between LWT(12/21)% and milk production within each breed group and LWT category were estimated using linear mixed effects models including the linear and quadratic effects of LWT(12/21)%. Results: The relationship between LWT(12/21)% and milk production was predominantly curvilinear, with lower milk production at lesser LWT(12/21)% compared with greater LWT(12/21)%. For all breed groups and most LWT categories, heifers that were 55 or 65% LWT(12/21)% produced greater ECM and milksolids yields compared with heifers that were 45% LWT(12/21)%. Holstein-Friesian, Holstein-Friesian crossbred and Holstein-Friesian-Jersey crossbred heifers that were 65% LWT(12/21)% produced greater cumulative 3-year ECM and milksolids yields compared with heifers of the same breed group that were 45% LWT(12/21)% Conclusions and clinical relevance: Heifers that were a greater proportion of their 21-month LWT at 12 months of age produced more first lactation and cumulative 3-year milk yields than heifers that were a lesser proportion of their 21-month LWT at 12 months of age. These results indicate that increased growth in early life of New Zealand dairy heifers is beneficial to future milk production.
