Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the potential effect and interaction of 3- nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP; Bovaer®) and whole cottonseed (WCS) on lactational performance, and enteric methane (CH4) emission of dairy cows. A total of 16 multiparous cows, including 8 Holstein Friesian (HF) and 8 Brown Swiss (BS) [224 ± 36 d in milk, 26 ± 3.7 kg milk yield], were used in a split-plot design, where the main plot was the breed of cows. Within each subplot, cows were randomly assigned to a treatment sequence in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square design with 2 × 2 factorial arrangements of treatments with 4, 24-d periods. The experimental treatments were: 1) Control (basal TMR), 2) 3-NOP (60 mg/kg TMR DM), 3) WCS (5% TMR DM), and 4) 3-NOP + WCS. The treatment diets were balanced for ether extract, crude protein, and NDF contents (4%, 16%, and 43% of TMR DM, respectively). The basal diets were fed twice daily at 0800 and 1800 h. Dry matter intake (DMI) and milk yield were measured daily, and enteric gas emissions were measured (using the GreenFeed system) during the last 3 d of each 24-d experimental period when animals were housed in tie stalls. There was no difference in DMI on treatment level, whereas the WCS treatment increased ECM yield and milk fat yield. There was no interaction of 3-NOP and WCS for any of the enteric gas emission parameters, but 3-NOP decreased CH4 production (g/d), CH4 yield (g/kg DMI), and CH4 intensity (g/kg ECM) by 13, 14 and 13%, respectively. Further, an unexpected interaction of breed by 3-NOP was observed for different enteric CH4 emission metrics: HF cows had a greater CH4 mitigation effect compared with BS cows for CH4 production (g/d; 18 vs. 8%), CH4 intensity (g/kg MY; 19% vs. 3%) and CH4 intensity (g/kg ECM; 19 vs. 4%). Hydrogen production was increased by 2.85 folds in HF and 1.53 folds in BS cows receiving 3-NOP. Further, there was a 3-NOP ' Time interaction for both breeds. In BS cows, 3-NOP tended to reduce CH4 production by 18% at around 4 h after morning feeding but no effect was observed at other time points. In HF cows, the greatest mitigation effect of 3-NOP (29.6%) was observed immediately after morning feeding and it persisted at around 23% to 26% for 10 h until the second feed provision, and 3 h thereafter, in the evening. In conclusion, supplementing 3-NOP at 60 mg/kg DM to a high fiber diet resulted in 18 to 19% reduction in enteric CH4 emission in Swiss Holstein Friesian cows. The lower response to 3-NOP by BS cows was unexpected and has not been observed in other studies. These results should be interpreted with caution due to low number of cows per breed. Lastly, supplementing WCS at 5% of DM improved ECM and milk fat yield but did not enhance CH4 inhibition effect of 3-NOP of dairy cows.

Feeding behavior of feedlot lambs fed diets with different energy and protein sources. Trop Anim Health Prod 2021; 53:158. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the replacement of ground corn by crude glycerin and soybean meal by cottonseed cake, in association or not, on feedlot lambs' feeding behavior. Thirty-two non-castrated crossbred ½ Dorper ½ Santa Inês lambs, with an average body weight of 18.52 ± 3.24 kg (mean ± standard deviation), were distributed in a completely randomized design, into four treatments and eight replicates per treatment, in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme. Four experimental diets were tested with different sources or combinations of energy and protein ingredients in the concentrate, respectively: (1) ground corn + soybean meal; (2) ground corn and cottonseed cake; (3) crude glycerin and soybean meal; and (4) crude glycerin and cottonseed cake. The glycerin decreased dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (P < 0.001) intakes, whereas it increased times spent in feeding (P = 0.009; from 21.8 to 28.6), rumination (P = 0.006; from 56.2 to 67.2), and chewing (P < 0.001; from 79.4 to 97.2), in minutes/100 g of DM. Feeding efficiencies of DM (P = 0.003) and NDF (P = 0.008) were decreased by the diets. Protein sources increased (P = 0.018) the times spent in chewing and per period in rumination (P = 0.014). Cottonseed cake, as a protein source, up to a 112 g/kg DM level, can totally replace soybean meal in diets for feedlot lambs without effects on the intake, behavioral activities, and feeding efficiencies. In contrast, the crude glycerin energy source is not adequate to replace ground corn in lambs' diets.

Abstract
Steam-flaked corn (SFC) and ground corn (GC) of different particle sizes were evaluated for their effects on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield and components, chewing activity, ration sorting, ruminal fermentation, and digestibility in lactating dairy cows. Eight multiparous Holstein cows in mid-lactation (46.6 ± 3.5 kg/d milk production and 101 ± 10 d in milk) were used in a double 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Cows were fed diets (dry matter basis) containing 36.2% forage (alfalfa hay and corn silage), 37.4% corn grain, and 26.4% other ingredients. The corn grain was ground (coarse: 1.08 mm; medium: 0.84 mm; and fine: 0.73 mm) or steam-flaked (SFC; density = 0.40 kg/L). The dry matter proportion retained on an 8-mm sieve was greater for the SFC diet than for the GC diets. There were no treatment effects on DMI, milk yield, fat-corrected milk, energy-corrected milk, fat or lactose yield, protein or lactose content, or milk urea nitrogen concentration. However, digestibility of dry matter and organic matter were greater for fine GC and SFC than the other diets. In addition, cows fed SFC had lower total-tract starch digestibility than cows fed GC diets. Cows fed SFC tended to have lower propionate proportion (22.8 vs. 27.1 mM) and total volatile fatty acid concentration (88.6 vs. 99.8 mM) in ruminal fluid than those fed GC diets. Acetate and butyrate concentration, acetate to propionate ratio, and ruminal concentration of ammonia-nitrogen were not affected by treatments. Ruminal pH (6.46 vs. 6.01) as well as milk fat content (2.75 vs. 2.59%) and efficiencies (fat-corrected milk/DMI and energy-corrected milk/DMI) were greater for SFC than GC, regardless of its particle size. Milk fat content tended to increase linearly with increasing particle size of GC. Eating activity (min/d) tended to be less for SFC compared with GC, but rumination activity (min/d) and total chewing activity (min/d) were not affected by processing or particle size. The results of study indicate that, compared with GC, steam flaking of corn with 400 g/L density increased milk fat content and efficiency of high-producing dairy cows without any negative effect on milk yield. For GC, milk fat content tended to linearly increase and starch digestibility decreased linearly with increasing particle size.

Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the effects of ramie conserved as forage supplementation on growth, digestion, and meat quality of Liuyang black castrated goats in a 60 days feedlot study. Forty-eight goats were randomly assigned to each of four treatments: 24% rice straw + 36% ramie residues silage + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% raw ramie silage + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% ramie residues hay + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% raw ramie hay + 40% concentrate. There was an increased tendency for ADG in ramie hay treatment than that of ramie silage treatment (p = 0.067). There was an increase for the apparent digestibility of DM, CP, NDF, and ADF in the ramie hay treatment than that of ramie silage treatment (p ≤ 0.034). An increased tendency was found for C18:1n-9c (% of total fatty acids) in the longissimus dorsi muscle of raw ramie treatment versus ramie residues treatment (p ≤ 0.087). These results indicate that the ramie hay or raw ramie treatment had a tendency for improving the nutrient digestibility and meat quality of goats than that of ramie silage or ramie residues treatment, respectively.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of calcium lignosulfonate associated with whole cottonseed in high-concentrate diets for sheep. Eight Dorper crossbred sheep with an average live weight of 42.5 ± 1.70 kg were assigned to two 4 × 4 Latin squares. The following experimental diets were evaluated: control diet (without calcium lignosulfonate) and diets with inclusion of 50, 100, and 150 g of calcium lignosulfonate/kg fresh matter. Diets were composed of soybean meal, ground corn, and whole cottonseed. Feed intake, digestibility, metabolic characteristics, and feeding behavior were evaluated. The intake of nutritional components did not show significant differences as a function of the lignosulfonate levels in the diet; however, the increase in calcium lignosulfonate levels linearly decreased the dry matter digestibility. Rumen ammonia nitrogen concentrations decreased linearly as the lignosulfonate levels in the diets were increased. There was no effect of lignosulfonate levels on blood parameters or feeding behavior of the animals. The use of lignosulfonate associated with cottonseed decreases the digestibility of dry matter and the concentration of rumen ammonia nitrogen, but does not change the intake of nutritional components, the blood parameters, or the feeding behavior of sheep.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to leverage equations derived in a meta-analysis into an ensemble modeling system for estimating dietary physical and chemical characteristics required to maintain desired rumen conditions in lactating dairy cattle. Given the availability of data, responsiveness of ruminal pH to animal behaviors, and the chemical composition and physical form of the diet, mean ruminal pH was chosen as the primary rumen environment indicator. Physically effective fiber (peNDF) is defined as the fraction of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) that stimulates chewing activity and contributes to the floating mat of large particles in the rumen. The peNDF of feedstuffs is typically estimated by multiplying the NDF content by a particle size measure, resulting in an estimated index of effectiveness. We hypothesized that the utility of peNDF could be expanded and improved by dissociating NDF and particle size and considering other dietary factors, all integrated into a physically adjusted fiber system that can be used to estimate minimum particle sizes of TMR and diet compositions needed to maintain ruminal pH targets. Particle size measures of TMR were limited to those found with the Penn State particle separator (PSPS). Starting with specific diet characteristics, the system employed an ensemble of models that were integrated using a variable mixture of experts approach to generate more robust recommendations for the percentage of dietary DM material that should be retained on the 8-mm sieve of a PSPS. Additional continuous variables also integrated in the physically adjusted fiber system include the proportion of material (dry matter basis) retained on the 19- and 8-mm sieves of the PSPS, estimated mean particle size, the dietary concentrations of forage, forage NDF, starch, and NDF, and ruminally degraded starch and NDF. The system was able to predict that the minimum proportion of material (dry matter basis) retained on the 8-mm sieve should increase with decreasing forage NDF or dietary NDF. Additionally, the minimum proportion of dry matter material on the 8-mm sieve should increase with increasing dietary starch. Results of this study agreed with described interrelationships between the chemical and physical form of diets fed to dairy cows and quantified the links between NDF intake, diet particle size, and ruminal pH. Feeding recommendations can be interpolated from tables and figures included in this work.

Abstract
The effect of dietary P intake on intestinal P absorption was evaluated in growing Holstein steers. Diets varying in P content (0.15, 0.27, 0.36, and 0.45%, DM basis) were fed to 8 steers (174±10kg of BW) fitted with permanent duodenal and ileal cannulas in a replicated 4×4 Latin square with 14-d periods. Ytterbium-labeled corn silage and cobalt-EDTA were used as particulate and liquid phase markers, respectively, to measure digesta flow. Duodenal and ileal samples and spot urine samples were collected every 9 h from d 11 to 14. Total fecal collection was conducted on d 11 to 14 with fecal bags. Blood samples were collected from the coccygeal vessel on d 14. Feed, digesta, and fecal samples were analyzed for total P and inorganic P. Data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX in SAS with a model including treatment, square, period, and interaction of treatment and square. Preplanned contrasts were used to evaluate linear and quadratic treatment effects. Results were reported as least squares means. Dry matter intake (mean=4.90kg/d, 2.8% of BW) and apparent DM digestibility (mean=78.1%) were unaffected by treatment. Duodenal and ileal flow of total P increased linearly with increasing P intake (13.4, 18.5, 23.0, and 27.4g/d; 6.80, 7.87, 8.42, and 10.4g/d). Increasing P intake increased the quantity of P absorbed from the small intestine linearly (6.96, 11.1, 14.6, and 17.2g/d), but absorption efficiency was unchanged (mean=59.6%). Phosphorus was absorbed on a net basis from the large intestine, but this was not affected by treatment and was a small proportion of total P absorption. Blood inorganic P increased linearly with increased dietary P (4.36, 6.31, 7.68, and 8.5mg/dL) and salivary P secretion was unchanged (mean=5.79g/d), suggesting that rumen function was prioritized during short-term P deficiency. These data showing an absence of change in absorption efficiency and salivary P secretion in the face of short-term P deficiency may be used to improve published models of P digestion, absorption, and metabolism.

Abstract
Avaliou-se a taxa de desaparecimento e a digestibilidade da silagem de restos culturais do abacaxizeiro (SRA) em substituição à silagem de cana-de-açúcar aditivada com 0,5% de ureia (SC) na alimentação de ovinos. Foram utilizados cinco cordeiros, raça Santa Inês, alocados em delineamento experimental quadrado latino 5X5, alimentados com dietas contendo 13,5% de PB e 63,0% de NDT. Foram avaliadas cinco dietas definidas da seguinte forma: 100% de SRA: 0% SC (100A); 75% SRA: 25% SC (75A); 50% SRA: 50% SC (50A); 25% SRA: 75% SC (25A) e 0% SRA: 100% SC(0A). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos para consumo de matéria-seca, digestibilidade da matéria seca (DMS) e para a digestibilidade da fibra em detergente neutro (DFDN) com a adição de SRA. Houve aumento (P<0,05) da taxa de desaparecimento de MS (Kd,%/h) do rúmen com a adição de SRA e o pH ruminal diminuiu (P<0,05) de forma linear com a adição de SRA. Em função da taxa de desaparecimento de MS do rúmen, digestibilidade e consumo de MS pode-se utilizar a silagem de restos culturais do abacaxizeiro (SRA) em substituição à silagem de cana-de-açúcar+0,5% ureia (SC) na alimentação de ovinos.

Abstract
We used a novel corn wet-milling coproduct [CMP; approximately 70% dry matter, 28% crude protein, 36% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 18% nonstructural carbohydrates] in diets formulated to contain 18.4% forage NDF, 17.4% crude protein, 20.2% starch, and 3.7% sugar. Six primiparous, rumen-cannulated Jersey cows were assigned to a 6 × 6 Latin square design with a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments. Diets were formulated to contain 20 and 30% CMP with 3 forage sources [corn silage (CS) and 40.5% NDF, CS replaced with 10% alfalfa hay (AH) and 45.0% NDF, or CS replaced with 7% grass hay (GH) and 67.4% NDF], with each providing 18.4% forage NDF in the diet. Total-tract digestibilities of NDF, N, and organic matter were not affected by treatment. Similarly, no treatment effects were detected for kinetics of NDF disappearance in situ from CMP or respective forage source or for N disappearance in situ from CMP. Grass hay increased total and liquid pool size of rumen contents compared with AH (by 3.2 and 3.0kg, respectively). Total time spent chewing increased in cows fed GH by over 35min compared with those fed AH, partially due to a trend for increased minutes spent ruminating. Mean particle size of rumen contents also tended to be higher in the GH (0.55mm) than AH (0.69mm) diets. No effects on production of milk or milk components were detected, but dry matter intake (DMI) tended to decrease when CMP increased from 20 to 30%. Gross feed efficiency (fat-corrected milk/DMI) tended to be greater when cows were fed AH and GH compared with CS and was greater for AH than GH diets. In diets containing low starch, increasing CMP from 20 to 30% potentially maintained similar fat-corrected milk production with lower DMI. However, more consideration also should be given to interactions among forages with respect to fill, digestion, and passage of fiber with increased inclusion rates of CMP.

Abstract
Accurate estimates of phosphorus (P) availability from feed are needed to allow P requirements to be met with reduced P intake, thus reducing P excretion by livestock. Exogenous phytase supplementation in poultry and swine diets improves bioavailability of P, and limited research suggests that this strategy may have some application in dairy cattle rations. The effects of exogenous phytase and forage particle length on site and extent of P digestion were evaluated with 5 ruminally and ileally cannulated lactating cows (188 ± 35 d in milk). Cows were assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments in 2 incomplete Latin squares with four 21-d periods. Diets contained P slightly in excess of National Research Council requirements with all P from feed sources. During the last 4d of each period, total mixed ration, refusals, omasal, ileal, and fecal samples were collected and analyzed for total P, inorganic P (Pi), and phytate (Pp). Total P intake was not influenced by dietary treatments but Pp intake decreased and Pi intake increased with supplemental phytase, suggesting rapid action of the enzyme in the total mixed ration after mixing. Omasal flow of Pi decreased with phytase supplementation, but we observed no effect of diet in ileal flow or small intestinal digestibility of any P fraction. Fecal excretion of total P was slightly higher and Pp excretion was lower for cows receiving diets supplemented with phytase. Milk yield and composition were unaffected by diets. When phytase was added to the mixed ration, dietary Pp was rapidly degraded before intake and total-tract Pp digestion was increased. The lack of effect of phytase supplementation on dietary P utilization was probably because these late-lactation cows had a low P requirement and were fed P-adequate diets.

Abstract
Variation in milk fat percentage resulting from monensin supplementation to lactating dairy cows could be due to altered ruminal fermentation with interactions of monensin with ruminal biohydrogenation of fat and ruminal carbohydrate availability. The objective of the study was to determine the effects of feeding monensin as Rumensin (R) in diets differing in starch availability (ground or steam-flaked corn), effective fiber (long or short alfalfa hay, LAH or SAH), and 4% fat (F) from distillers grains, roasted soybeans, and an animal-vegetable blend on ruminal fermentation characteristics and milk production in lactating dairy cows. Six ruminally cannulated lactating Holstein cows were used in a balanced 6×6 Latin square design with 21-d periods. The cows were fed 6 diets: (1) C=control diet with ground corn and LAH, (2) CR=C plus R, (3) CRFL=CR plus F, (4) CRFS=ground corn, R, F, and SAH, (5) SRFL=steam-flaked corn, R, F, and LAH, and (6) SRFS=steam-flaked corn, R, F, and SAH. Mean particle size of LAH was 5.00 mm and 1.36 mm for SAH. All diets were formulated to have 21% forage NDF and 40% NFC. The R tended to decrease DMI, decreased milk fat yield, and numerically lowered milk fat percentage (3.41 vs. 2.98%). Addition of F to R diets did not affect milk fat percentage. By feeding diets containing R and F, SAH tended to increase milk fat percentage for the ground-corn diet, but SAH tended to decrease milk fat percentage with steam-flaked corn (CRFL+SRFS vs. CRFS+SRFL). The steam-flaked corn increased total-tract NDF digestibility (CRFL + CRFS vs. SRFL+SRFS; 51.1 vs. 56%). Addition of F with R decreased total VFA concentration and increased rumen pH. Fat addition with R decreased rumen NH3N and MUN (12.8 vs. 13.9 mg/dL), and SFC decreased NH3N concentration compared with ground corn. Although R caused milk fat depression, addition of F did not further exacerbate milk fat depression. Fatty acid analysis did not implicate any particular biohydrogenation intermediate as the causative factor for the milk fat depression.

Abstract
Methane is an end product of ruminal fermentation that is energetically wasteful and contributes to global climate change. Bromoethanesulfonate, animal-vegetable fat, and monensin were compared with a control treatment to suppress different functional groups of ruminal prokaryotes in the presence or absence of protozoa to evaluate changes in fermentation, digestibility, and microbial N outflow. Four dual-flow continuous culture fermenter systems were used in 4 periods in a 4 x 4 Latin square design split into 2 subperiods. In subperiod 1, a multistage filter system (50-microm smallest pore size) retained most protozoa. At the start of subperiod 2, conventional filters (300-microm pore size) were substituted to efflux protozoa via filtrate pumps over 3 d; after a further 7 d of adaptation, the fermenters were sampled for 3 d. Treatments were retained during both subperiods. Flow of total N and digestibilities of NDF and OM were 18, 16, and 9% higher, respectively, for the defaunated subperiod but were not different among treatments. Ammonia concentration was 33% higher in the faunated fermenters but was not affected by treatment. Defaunation increased the flow of nonammonia N and bacterial N from the fermenters. Protozoal counts were not different among treatments, but bromoethanesulfonate increased the generation time from 43.2 to 55.6 h. Methanogenesis was unaffected by defaunation but tended to be increased by unsaturated fat. Defaunation did not affect total volatile fatty acid production but decreased the acetate:propionate ratio; monensin increased production of isovalerate and valerate. Biohydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids was impaired in the defaunated fermenters because effluent flows of oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids were 60, 77, and 69% higher, and the ratio of vaccenic acid:unsaturated FA ratio was decreased by 34% in the effluent. This ratio was increased in both subperiods with the added fat diet, indicating an accumulation of intermediates of biohydrogenation. However, the flow of 18:2 conjugated linoleic acid was unaffected by defaunation or by treatments other than added fat. The flows of trans-10, trans-11, and total trans-18:1 fatty acids were not affected by monensin or faunation status.

Abstract
Our objectives are to integrate current knowledge with a future perspective regarding how metagenomics can be used to integrate rumen microbiology and nutrition. Ruminal NH3-N concentration is a crude predictor of efficiency of dietary N conversion into microbial N, but as this concentration decreases below approximately 5 mg/dL (the value most often suggested to be the requirement for optimal microbial protein synthesis), blood urea N transfer into the rumen provides an increasing buffer against excessively low NH3-N concentrations, and the supply of amino N might become increasingly important to improve microbial function in dairy diets. Defaunation typically decreases NH3-N concentration, which should increase the efficiency of blood urea N and protein-derived NH3-N conversion into microbial protein in the rumen. Thus, we explain why more emphasis should be given toward characterization of protozoal interactions with proteolytic and deaminating bacterial populations. In contrast with research evaluating effects of protozoa on N metabolism, which has primarily been done with sheep and cattle with low dry matter intake, dairy cattle have greater intakes of readily available carbohydrate combined with increased ruminal passage rates. We argue that these conditions decrease protozoal biomass relative to bacterial biomass and increase the efficiency of protozoal growth, thus reducing the negative effects of bacterial predation compared with the beneficial effects that protozoa have on stabilizing the entire microbial ecosystem. A better understanding of mechanistic processes altering the production and uptake of amino N will help us to improve the overall conversion of dietary N into microbial protein and provide key information needed to further improve mechanistic models describing rumen function and evaluating dietary conditions that influence the efficiency of conversion of dietary N into milk protein.

Abstract
Methionine supplemented as 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid (HMB) has been suggested to alter bacterial or protozoal populations in the rumen. Our objective was to determine if source of Met would change microbial populations in the rumen and to compare those results to samples from the omasum. The ruminal and omasal samples were collected from cows fed control (no Met), dl-Met, HMB, or the isopropyl ester of HMB (HMBi; estimated 50% rumen protection) in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design. In one square, changes in protozoal populations were determined using microscopic counts and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), whereas changes in bacterial populations were determined using DGGE and ribosomal intergenic spacer length polymorphism (RIS-LP). Neither the protozoal counts nor the DGGE banding patterns derived from protozoa were different among the dietary treatments or for ruminal vs. omasal samples. As revealed by both DGGE and RIS-LP, bacterial populations clustered by treatments in ruminal and especially in omasal samples. Using cows from both Latin squares, the flow of protozoal cells from the rumen was quantified by multiplying protozoal cell count in omasal fluid by the omasal fluid flow (using CoEDTA as a liquid flow marker) or was estimated by rumen pool size of cells multiplied by either the ruminal dilution rate of CoEDTA (after termination of CoEDTA dosing) or the passage rate of Yb-marked particles. Compared with the omasal fluid flow measurement (16.4 h), protozoal generation time was approximated much more closely using the particulate than the fluid passage rate from the rumen (generation times of 15.7 and 7.5 h, respectively). There seems to be minimal selective retention of protozoal genera in the rumen in dairy cattle fed every 2 h. Data support the validity of the omasal sampling technique under our conditions.

Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of whole cottonseed or cottonseed products on performance and carcass characteristics of beef cattle. In Exp. 1, 120 beef steers (initial BW = 381 +/- 31.7 kg) were fed steam-flaked corn-based finishing diets with 10% (DM basis) basal roughage, and whole cottonseed or individual cottonseed components (cottonseed hulls, meal, and oil). Over the entire feeding period, ADG did not differ (P = 0.95), but DMI increased (P = 0.07) and G:F decreased (P = 0.06) for steers fed the cottonseed diets compared with the control diet. Dressing percent (P = 0.02) and marbling scores (P = 0.02) of carcasses from steers fed the cottonseed diets were less than for steers fed the control diet. In Exp. 2, 150 beef steers (initial BW = 364 +/- 9.9 kg) were used to determine the effects of whole cottonseed or pelleted cottonseed (PCS) on performance and carcass characteristics. Cattle were fed steam-flaked corn-based finishing diets in which whole cottonseed or PCS replaced all of the dietary roughage, supplemental fat, and supplemental natural protein of the control diet. Over the entire feeding period, steers fed the cottonseed diets had lower (P = 0.04) DMI and greater (P < 0.01) G:F than steers fed the control diet. Carcass characteristics did not differ (P = 0.16 to 0.96) among dietary treatments. In Exp. 3, 150 beef heifers (initial BW = 331 +/- 17.1 kg) were used to determine the effects of PCS or delinted, whole cottonseed (DLCS) on performance and carcass characteristics. Heifers were fed rolled corn-based finishing diets in which cottonseed replaced the dietary roughage, supplemental fat, and all or part of the supplemental natural protein of the control diet. Over the entire feeding period, ADG, DMI, and G:F of heifers fed the control diet did not differ (P = 0.19 to 0.80) from those of the cottonseed diets; however, heifers fed the diets containing PCS had greater ADG (P = 0.03) and G:F (P = 0.09) than heifers fed diets containing DLCS. Carcass characteristics of heifers fed the control diet did not differ (P > or = 0.28) from those fed the cottonseed diets. Heifers fed the diets containing PCS had greater (P < or = 0.03) HCW, dressing percent, and LM area than those fed DLCS. Based on our results, whole cottonseed, or products derived from processing whole cottonseed, can replace feedstuffs commonly used in beef cattle finishing diets with no adverse effects on animal performance or carcass characteristics.

Abstract
Data from recent research studies were analyzed quantitatively, and the random effect of experiment was assessed to define the physiological responses of dairy cows in early lactation to intake of physically effective neutral detergent fiber (peNDF). All studies were conducted with lactating Holstein cows (84.8 +/- 3.54 days in milk) in Latin square designs, and feeds were offered ad libitum as total mixed rations (TMR). The peNDF was estimated by 2 measurement techniques, the NDF content of TMR multiplied by amount of dry matter (DM) retained on a 1.18-mm screen (peNDF(> 1.18)) and NDF content of TMR multiplied by the proportion of DM retained by 19- and 8-mm Penn State Particle Separator screens (peNDF(> 8)). Other factors, including concentrations of NDF, forage NDF, non-fiber carbohydrates, the amount of digestible organic matter of forages (FDOM), and the intake of ruminally degradable starch (RDSI) from grain in the diet were also investigated. The studied animal response variables included feed intake, ruminal fermentation, chewing activity, fiber digestibility, and milk production and composition. The ruminal pH (day mean) in this study ranged from 5.30 to 6.59. Using peNDF(> 1.18) approach, the requirements for physically effective fiber in high-yielding dairy cows fed TMR in an ad libitum intake were estimated to be about 19% of ration DM or 4.1 kg/d or 0.6 kg/100 kg of body weight to maintain a ruminal pH of about 6.0. When peNDF was measured as peNDF(> 8), ruminal pH responded in a quadratic fashion but the confidence of estimation was lower (R(2) = 0.27) compared with the peNDF(> 1.18) approach (R(2) = 0.67). Results of these data analyses showed that peNDF(> 1.18) provided a satisfactory estimation of the mean ruminal pH (R(2) = 0.67) and NDF digestibility (R(2) = 0.56). Furthermore, peNDF(> 1.18) was poorly, although positively, correlated to daily chewing (R(2) = 0.17), and rumination (R(2) = 0.24) activity. On the other hand, results from these analyses showed that milk parameters are less sensitive to the effects of dietary peNDF than other variables, such as ruminal pH, chewing activity, and fiber digestibility. Dietary FDOM correlated positively (moderately) to ruminal pH (R(2) = 0.24), daily chewing (R(2) = 0.23), and rumination (R(2) = 0.29) activity, whereas the daily RDSI from grain correlated negatively to ruminal pH (R(2) = 0.55) and positively to total volatile fatty acids (R(2) = 0.27). Inclusion of FDOM and RDSI from grain along with peNDF(> 1.18) in the models that predict rumen pH further improved the accuracy of prediction. This approach appeared to further complement the concept of peNDF that does not account for differences in ruminal fermentability of feeds.

Abstract
We have recently developed a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to quantify copies of the genes encoding protozoal 18S rRNA. The assay includes procedures for isolating and concentrating protozoal cells from the rumen for use as a standard to convert 18S rRNA gene copies to a biomass basis. The current objectives were to 1) determine the degree of reduction of bacterial contamination in the protozoal standard, 2) determine if protozoal standards derived from ruminal fluid are appropriate for predicting duodenal flows, and 3) evaluate the assay's determined values for protozoal N in the rumen and flowing to the duodenum compared with independent measurements. Our protozoal collection method reduced non-associated bacterial contamination by 33-fold, the contamination of which could otherwise significantly bias RNA (microbial marker) and N percentages of concentrated protozoal fractions. Based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, the use of protozoal cells isolated from ruminal fluid appears appropriate for use in quantitative assays determining protozoal N flow postruminally. Using real-time PCR, protozoal N was determined to be 4.8 and 12.7% of the rumen microbial N pool and 5.9 and 11.9% of the duodenal flow of microbial N on diets containing low (16%) or high (21%) forage neutral detergent fiber, respectively, which were comparable with independent measures and expectations.

Abstract
Pelleting cottonseed (CS) improves handling characteristics. Our objectives were to determine whether increasing the particle size of the CS pellet or dilution of a smaller pellet with delinted CS would limit the rate of CS oil release to optimize digestibility of fatty acids (FA) and fiber while maintaining milk fat production. In a 5 x 5 Latin square design with 3-wk periods, 5 rumen-cannulated cows were fed 1) control with CS hulls (CSH) and CS meal plus tallow and Ca soaps of FA, 2) whole CS (WCS), 3) small CS pellets (SP; 0.44-cm die diameter), 4) larger CS pellets (LP; 0.52-cm die diameter), or 5) a blend of 1/2 SP plus 1/2 partially delinted CS (SPD). Diets contained 39.6% concentrate, 14.4% CS, and 46% forage (40:60, alfalfa hay:corn silage) on a DM basis and were balanced to have similar concentrations of CS protein, CS fiber, and total fat. In a production trial, dietary treatments were 1) WCS control, 2) LP, 3) SPD, and 4) SPD fed at 90%. Sixty cows averaging 105 d in milk were fed the WCS diet for 2 wk and then assigned to one of the 4 diets for 12 wk. Total tract digestibility of NDF was unaffected, but N digestibility was lower for SPD than for other treatments. Fatty acid digestibility was higher for SP and LP (82.6 and 82.3%) than for CSH or SPD treatments (78.8 and 75.3%), and WCS was intermediate (81.1%). The trans-11 C18:1 from cows fed SP and LP (6.58 and 6.24% of total milk FA) was greater than that from cows fed CSH, WCS, and SPD (3.23, 3.79, and 3.97%). The trans-10 C18:1 in milk fat from SP and LP (0.508 and 0.511%) was higher than that in WCS and SPD diets (0.316 and 0.295%); CSH was intermediate (0.429%). Using passage rates estimated from the NRC, disappearance of total FA in situ was estimated to be 17.7, 44.2, 46.6, and 35.0% for WCS, SP, LP, and SPD, respectively. In the production trial, a diet x week interaction was explained by a trend for progressively greater milk production for SPD and SPD90 than for WCS or LP. Milk fat was lower for LP (2.74%) and SPD90 (2.85%) than for WCS or SPD (3.07 and 3.08%). The fat yield was lower for LP than for SPD (1.09 and 1.30 kg/d); WCS and SPD90 were intermediate (1.23 and 1.21 kg/d). Although having a lower FA digestibility, SPD appeared to minimize negative effects of free oil from SP in the rumen, explaining higher DMI and milk production compared with WCS or LP.

Abstract
This study examines the effect of NaOH treatment on the nutritive value of Pima cottonseed for lactating cows. Treatment of Pima cottonseed with NaOH increased the extent of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber in vitro digestibility. Three groups of cows were fed 3 similar total mixed rations (TMR) differing only in the type of cottonseed fed, either whole linted Akala, whole unlinted Pima, or whole Pima treated with 4% NaOH (T-Pima). Dry matter and organic matter (OM) intakes of Akala and Pima TMR were similar and tended to be lower compared with cows fed T-Pima. This was reflected in similar intake of crude protein and lipids by cows fed the 3 TMR. Digestibility of DM, OM, and crude protein were similar in cows fed Pima and T-Pima diets, and slightly higher in cows fed the Akala TMR. Lipid digestibility was highest in cows fed Akala TMR, whereas cellulose and NDF digestibility were lowest in Pima TMR. In the 3 TMR, there was a large gap between the high values of "digestibility of intact seeds" and actual in vivo digestion of DM and OM. Similar yields of milk and milk protein were obtained in cows fed the Akala and Pima TMR, whereas higher yields of milk, milk protein, milk fat, and 4% fat-corrected milk were found in the T-Pima cows. Similar efficiency of DM intake for fat-corrected milk production was achieved by cows fed the 3 TMR.

Abstract
Objectives were to quantify the ruminal effects and flows to the omasum of Met provided as 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid (HMB), the isopropyl ester of HMB (HMBi), and DL-Met. Eight ruminally cannulated cows were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design. Treatments were 1) no Met (control), 2) HMB at 0.10% of DM, 3) HMBi at 0.13% of DM, and 4) DL-Met at 0.088% of DM. Diets were identical except for type of Met supplement and were based on corn silage and alfalfa hay at 30 and 13% of dietary DM, respectively. Samples of omasal fluid were used to determine the proportion of Met supplements passing out of the reticulorumen. Dry matter intake (20.1 kg/d) was restricted during the week of sampling to a maximum of 95% of ad libitum DMI determined during the first 2 wk of the period. Milk yields (37.7 +/- 0.8 kg/d) and fat concentration (3.42 +/- 0.15%) were not significantly different for control, HMB, HMBi, and DL-Met. Milk protein concentration (2.91, 2.95, 3.02, 2.96 +/- 0.07%, respectively) was significantly increased by the HMBi treatment. Rumen volatile fatty acids profile and NH3 concentrations were similar across treatments. Apparent ruminal digestibility of organic matter and neutral detergent fiber were higher for the three diets supplemented with Met sources than for the control diet. In situ rate of digestibility of CP from alfalfa hay, TMR, and corn silage was affected by Met sources. Passage rates of small particles (0.071/h) and fluid (0.167/h) were not affected by treatments. Protozoal counts in the rumen and omasum were not significantly affected by Met sources. Proportion of omasal N from bacterial N was not different (0.54 +/- 0.03), and bacterial N flow (305 +/- 24.4 g/d) was similar across treatments. The proportion of HMB that passed into the omasum was 5.3 +/- 1.5% of the amount consumed. Only a small amount (2.3%) of HMBi was found as HMB in the omasum. These results indicate that little HMB escapes ruminal degradation through passage to the omasum and that the site of HMBi absorption must be preomasal.

Abstract
Performance of lactating dairy cows fed diets containing either mechanically delinted whole cottonseed (DWCS; 3.7% lint) or linted whole cottonseed (LWCS; 11.7% lint) was measured. Forty primiparous (86 +/- 39 d in milk) and 40 multiparous (88 +/- 30 d in milk) cows were fed a total mixed ration containing 13% (dry matter basis) DWCS or LWCS in two blocks of 112 d (n = 53 and 27, respectively). Other total mixed ration ingredients (dry matter basis) were corn silage (28.1%), alfalfa silage (23%), high moisture shelled corn (27.8%), soybean meal (1.8%), expeller soybean meal (1.8%), blood meal (2%), and mineral-vitamin supplements (2.5%). Dry matter intake and milk yield were measured daily and milk composition every other week. Fecal grab samples were taken during wk 3 and 13 of each block to estimate excretion of intact whole cottonseeds. Milk yield, 3.5% fat-corrected milk, energy-corrected milk, milk composition and dry matter intake were not affected by whole cottonseed source. Body condition score tended to increase more with DWCS (0.22 vs. 0.11) for primiparous cows, although this was not reflected in body weight change. Dry matter digestibilities, based on indigestible ADF, were 63.5 and 64.8% for the DWCS and LWCS diets. It was calculated that 2.5 and 1.5% of the consumed seeds were excreted as whole cottonseeds in feces with the DWCS and LWCS diets, respectively. Although statistically significant, treatment differences in the proportion of intact seeds in the fecal DM would have little nutritional consequence. Mechanically delinted WCS performed as well as LWCS for all of the cow performance and milk composition variables measured.

Abstract
Holstein cows starting at wk 8 of lactation were used to evaluate lactation performance when wet brewers grains, whole linted cottonseed, or starch-coated whole linted cottonseed (Easiflo) were substituted for forage. The wet brewers grains were added to diets to decrease forage neutral detergent fiber from 21% incrementally down to 15% while simultaneously decreasing nonfiber carbohydrate concentration from 40.3% down to about 33.8%. The cottonseed treatments all had similar concentrations of forage neutral detergent fiber (15%) and nonfiber carbohydrates (33.1 and 36.0%). Dry matter intake and milk production were similar across treatments. Milk fat percentage was decreased for Easiflo versus whole linted cottonseeds, but no other responses were detected. The current National Research Council (NRC) energy model was evaluated using individual cow data that were averaged over the entire 16-wk treatment period. For treatment means, the output of energy averaged 99% of the net energy of lactation intake, indicating very good corroboration of the model to account for energy usage for a group of cows. However, the ability to predict energy usage for individual cows was less accurate based on the comparison of residuals of observed and predicted body weight change regressed against predicted body weight change, apparently because of compounding of random errors in this prediction, which was alleviated over a larger number of observations. These results also corroborate current NRC guidelines for minimum forage neutral detergent fiber concentrations for lactating cows past the calving transition period.

Abstract
Six ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows were used in a 6 x 6 Latin square design to 1) evaluate the potential interaction in effectiveness of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from whole cottonseed (WCS) when it was substituted for forage NDF (FNDF) and fed with ground (G) or steam-flaked (SF) corn and 2) to determine whether the kinetic properties of NDF digestion further clarify the effectiveness of WCS. The six dietary treatments were: forage control with G corn (21% FNDF), 5% WCS with G or SF corn (18% FNDF), 10% WCS with G or SF corn (15% FNDF), and 15% WCS with G corn (12% FNDF). Based on chewing activity, the NDF from WCS was estimated to be 84% (SE = 36%) as effective as alfalfa silage NDF. Decreasing passage and digestion rates of potentially digestible NDF with increasing WCS increased the evacuated pool size of ruminal DM, apparently explaining the similar ruminal mat consistency among treatments. Measures of effectiveness ofWCS treatments did not interact with corn source. Fluid dilution rate was estimated based on a two-compartment model describing Co dilution, but no treatment differences were detected. There was a strong linear bias for estimates of ruminal NDF digestibility based on a single compartment model using the digestion rate of potentially digestible NDF and the passage rate of either indigestible NDF or digestible NDF when compared with NDF digestibility calculated using duodenal flows. Although further verification is needed, these digestion and passage kinetics help explain why WCS are effective at stimulating chewing during eating and rumination.
