Effect of increasing dietary proportion of plantain on milk production and nitrogen use of grazing dairy cows in late lactation

Abstract Context Plantain has shown promise as a forage that can mitigate nitrogen (N) losses from farm systems, although adoption and regulation requires knowledge of the minimum amount of forage area or diet quantity to observe an effect. Aims A grazing study was conducted to evaluate the effect of offering increasing proportions of spatially adjacent plantain (PL) and perennial ryegrass–white clover (PRGWC) on milk production and N utilisation of dairy cows. Methods Forty-eight late lactating cows blocked into replicated (n = 3) groups of four cows were randomly allocated to one of the following four forage treatments based on percentage area of plantain: 0%, 15%, 30%, or 60%. Cows were allocated 25 kg DM/cow.day of forage above ground level daily on the basis of metabolisable energy requirements. Dry matter intake was estimated from the difference between pre- and post-grazing pasture mass, using a calibrated electronic rising-plate meter. Milk production was measured as yield and milk solids, while N use was estimated from total milk N excretion and spot subsamples of blood, urine and faeces. Key results Offering cows spatially adjacent strips of PL increased apparent dry matter intake compared with PRGWC pasture alone (16.4 vs 15.1 kg DM/cow.day, P = 0.027) and apparent metabolisable energy intake (203 vs 188 MJ/kg.cow.day, P < 0.001). Milk yield (16.1 kg/cow.day), milk solids production (1.6 kg/cow.day) and fat concentration (5.69%) were unaffected by the proportion of plantain in the diet. PL offered at 60% of the area increased milk protein concentration compared with PRGWC (4.65 vs 4.36%, P < 0.01). There was no treatment effect on total apparent N intake (563 g N/cow.day), N excretion in milk (113 g N/cow.day) and N-utilisation efficiency (20 g milk N/100 g N consumed). However, total milk urea, blood urea and urine urea N concentrations declined with increasing plantain in the diet, reflecting an influence on urea metabolism. Conclusions Offering plantain to grazing dairy cows did not improve milk yield or N-use efficiency, but influenced urea metabolism. Implications Sowing plantain in spatially separate strips within perennial ryegrass–white clover pastures is a useful option to achieve target levels of plantain in the diet and, in conjunction with other mitigation strategies, can be used to improve the sustainability of pastoral dairy farming.

The effect of avoparcin on the ileal and faecal digestibility of nitrogen and amino acids in the milk-fed calf

The study aimed to determine the effect of the growth promotant avoparcin on the digestion and absorption of nitrogen and amino acids from pre-ruminant milk-fed calves. Eighteen male Friesian calves, 45 kg live weight, were allocated to three diets: a commercial high-quality milk replacer compound (control); control with 100 mg zinc bacitracin per kg (positive control) and control with 40 mg avoparcin per kg. The diets were given once-daily at a set rate of intake during a 14-day metabolic study. On the 15th day the calves were fed at 2-h intervals and ileal digesta were sampled (8 h after the start of feeding) from the euthanazed animal. Estimates of apparent ileal digestibility were determined by reference to an indigestible marker, with the comparable faecal estimates determined following the total collection of faeces.

There was no significant effect of avoparcin or zinc bacitracin addition on faecal apparent digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen, gross energy and amino acids or on ileal apparent digestibility of nitrogen and amino acids. Neither was there a significant effect of either additive on nitrogen retention, daily urinary urea and total nitrogen excretions or portal and peripheral plasma urea concentrations. Ileal apparent digestibility coefficients determined on the control diet ranged from 0-82 for glycine to 0-96 for phenylalanine, tyrosine and methionine. The ileal measures of apparent digestibility were more variable than the comparable values determined over the entire digestive tract. Measurements on the faeces compared with measurements on digesta at the terminal ileum gave higher values (P< 0·05) of apparent digestibility for nitrogen and 10 of the 16 amino acids.

Growth, nutrient utilization, and body composition of dairy calves fed milk replacers containing different amounts of protein

Male Holstein calves < 1 wk of age were allowed a 2-wk adaptation period after purchase, and then were blocked by BW and assigned randomly within block to either a baseline slaughter group or one of four experimental groups (n = 8 to 9 per group). Treatments were isocaloric milk replacers (12.5% solids) fed at 12% of BW that contained 16.1, 18.5, 22.9, or 25.8% CP (DM basis) from whey protein sources. After a 6-wk feeding period, all calves were slaughtered and the weights and chemical composition of the viscera-free carcasses (VFC; including head, hide, feet, and tail) were determined. Gain of BW (0.38, 0.45, 0.56, and 0.62 kg/d) and gain:feed ratio (0.51, 0.59, 0.71, and 0.78) increased linearly (P < 0.001) as dietary CP increased; rate of change in body length, wither height, and heart girth also increased linearly (P < or = 0.05). Balance measurements conducted during wk 3 and 4 of the experimental period showed that both absorbed N (16.9, 20.0, 25.8, and 30.6 g/d) and retained N (7.6, 9.0, 13.2, and 15.6 g/d) increased linearly (P < 0.001) as dietary CP increased. Retained N as a percentage of absorbed N increased linearly (P < 0.01) as dietary CP increased (44.3, 44.7, 50.7, and 50.9%), whereas biological value was unaffected (71.1, 68.7, 69.5, and 67.3%; P = 0.26). Digestible energy and ME represented 94.5 and 89.7% of intake energy, respectively, and were not affected by dietary CP content. Plasma urea N concentration increased linearly (2.9, 3.3, 4.6, and 6.0 mg/dL) as dietary CP increased. Contents of water (68.2, 69.1, 70.2, and 70.5%; P < 0.001) and protein (19.6, 20.0, 20.0, and 20.2%; P < 0.10) in VFC increased linearly, whereas contents of fat (7.2, 6.2, 5.5, and 5.2%; P < 0.001) and ash (5.1, 5.2, 4.8, and 4.7%; P < 0.02) decreased linearly as dietary CP increased. Trends in visceral tissue composition were similar to those for VFC. The content of water in VFC tissue gain increased, whereas contents of fat and energy decreased, as dietary CP increased. Final VFC energy and gain of energy in VFC were not affected by dietary CP. At similar initial ME intakes, increasing dietary CP (i.e., increasing protein: energy) linearly increased ADG, gain:feed, N retention, and deposition of lean tissue in VFC, demonstrating that diet composition can markedly affect components of body growth in preruminant dairy calves.

Effect of extra energy as fat or milk replacer solids in diets of young dairy calves on growth during cold weather

The effects of feeding two levels of supplemental fat and extra milk replacer solids on Holstein calves housed in hutches during the winter were investigated. Fifty calves (10 per treatment) were assigned to the following dietary treatments: 1) milk replacer (control) reconstituted to 12.5% DM fed at 10% of BW (adjusted weekly), 2) same as treatment 1 plus 113 g/d of supplemental fat, 3) milk replacer reconstituted to 15% DM and fed at 10% of BW (adjusted weekly), 4) same as treatment 1 plus 226 g/d of supplemental fat, and 5) milk replacer reconstituted to 15% DM fed at 14% of BW (adjusted weekly). Half the amount of milk replacer consumed during wk 4 was fed during wk 5, and calves were weaned to dry feed at 35 d of age. A pelleted starter was offered for ad libitum intake throughout the 42-d trial. Gains in BW were greater for calves fed 226 than 113 or 0 g/d of supplemental fat (d 3 to 28). Calves fed milk replacer reconstituted to 15% DM at 14% of BW had greater BW gains during d 3 to 28 than control. Starter consumption was similar between groups receiving 113 and 0 g/d of fat supplement but lower in the group fed 226 g/d. Extra milk replacer solids in diets increased fecal scores to levels greater than those of calves in other groups. The benefit of fat supplementation of milk replacers was manifested as increased BW gain during the 1st mo of life.

Replacement nutrition management

The basic principles of dairy cow feeding apply equally to the dairy heifer. Ration balancing must be accomplished in order to formulate least-cost, nutrient-balanced rations for each age group of heifers. Forage testing enables rations to be developed that utilize the various quality forages that are available on a farm and allows optimum allocation of forages for maximum profitability of the farm feeding system. In addition to feeding management, housing, ventilation, health care, grouping, cleanliness, and many other management factors can complement a sound heifer nutrition program.

Advances in Nutrition and Management of Calves and Heifers

Strides have been significant in the knowledge of calf and heifer rearing during the last 25 yr. Much information has been gathered on digestive enzymes, development of the digestive system, and metabolism. Investigations have clarified further the role of colostrum in immunity and nutrition of the young calf. Several sources of nutrients have been tested for their suitability in formulation of acceptable milk replacers and calf starters. Once-a-day feeding of milk, colostrum, or milk replacer and early weaning are practical management procedures. Labor and cost efficient methods of feeding and caring for young calves have developed. Extensive work on rearing rates and methods of rearing was published during these 25 yr.

Successful schemes have evolved for feeding heifers to freshen at an optimal age and to occupy a respectful position in the milking line. Developments in housing have been phenomenal – from the calf hutch to environmentally controlled nurseries for calves. Heifer housing has ranged from relatively simple, but labor-efficient housing, to complete confinement systems. Herd health programs have developed to minimize many disease problems that can be particularly disastrous in large herds. Contract rearing of herd replacements has become a more frequently chosen option in this period. Budgets for rearing calves from birth to freshening have appeared in recommendations for raising heifers.

Amino acid nutrition of the young calf. Estimation of methionine and lysine requirements

A semipurified diet containing 14 crystalline amino acids as the sole source of nitrogen was used qualitatively and quantitatively to determine dietary needs of the young calf for lysine and methionine. Body weight gain, nitrogen balance, and concentrations of free amino acids in plasma were the criteria to assess the response of young calves to the experimental diets containing graded amounts of lysine and methionine. By these methods the methionine requirement as D-L methionine in the absence of cystine ranged from .17 to .23 g/day/kg body weight (.65 g/kg weight.75).

Protein for calves on a limited milk-early weaning system

Complete pelleted calf starter rations were fed to Holstein heifer calves on a limited milk-early weaning program from 3 days to 12 wk of age. Five rations fed to each of 10 calves were to contain crude protein percentages of 10, 12.5, 12.5 with 97% urea, 15, and 15 with 1.1% urea (as fed). The digestible protein:digestible energy ratios (g digestible protein/Mcal digestible energy) of the rations (in same order) were 23.4, 30.7, 28.8, 36.4, and 41.5. Average birth weight was 42.9 kg and weaning weight at 4 wk, 52.8 kg. Treatment effects on feed intake, average daily gain, and feed efficiency were analyzed after adjustment of birth weight and removal of effects of block and location. Feed intake for 12 wk was greater for 15% crude protein with 1.1% urea than for either 12.5% ration but not different from 10% protein. Average daily gain was increased for 15% protein rations compared to 10 or 12.5% protein. Gain by claves fed 10% protein was equal to that by those fed 12.5% protein. Feed efficiency during wk 5 to 12 was improved for 15% with vegetable protein compared to 10% crude protein or the 12.5% crude protein ration with vegetable protein. There were no differences in intake, gain, or efficiency between urea and vegetable protein.
