Heat increments of steam-volatile fatty acids infused separately and in a mixture into fasting cows

Derivation of the maintenance energy requirements and efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for dry and lactating Jersey cows

Maintenance energy is the energy required to conserve the state of an animal when no work is completed. Dietary energy must be supplied to meet maintenance requirements before milk can be produced. The objectives of the current experiment were to quantify the maintenance energy requirement of Jersey cows when lactating or dry. Energetic measures were collected on 8 Jersey cows and evaluated across 3 physiological phases and nutritional planes: lactation, dry cows fed at maintenance, and fasted dry cows. Through total collection of feces and urine as well as using headbox-style indirect calorimeters, energy balance and heat production data were measured across all phases. Lactation data were collected across four 28-d periods. Data for cows fed at maintenance were collected after 14 d and fasting heat production was measured during the last 24 h of a 96-h fast. Net energy for maintenance (NE_M) requirements, and the efficiency of converting metabolizable energy (ME) into net energy were compared between lactating and dry (maintenance or fasting phase) cows. Heat production of dry cows fed at maintenance, which represents ME for maintenance, was 0.146 ± 0.0087 Mcal per unit of metabolic body weight (BW^0.75, MBW). Fasting heat production, which represents NE_M, was 0.102 ± 0.0071 Mcal/MBW. Energy balance was calculated as tissue energy plus milk energy. When estimated via regressing energy balance on ME intake, NE_M was not different between dry and lactating cows (0.120 ± 0.32 vs. 0.103 ± 0.0052 Mcal/MBW). However, the slope of the regression of energy balance on ME intake was greater for dry compared with lactating cows (0.714 ± 0.046 vs. 0.685 ± 0.010) when evaluated with a fixed intercept. This suggests that dry cows were more efficient at converting ME into net energy and that the efficiency of utilizing ME for maintenance may be greater than for lactation. Our measurements of NE_M and the slope of ME on energy balance were greater than the value used by the National Research Council (2001), which are 0.080 Mcal/MBW for NE_M and approximately 0.64 for the slope. Results of this study suggest that NE_M and the efficiency of converting ME into NE_M of modern lactating Jersey cows are similar to recent measurements on modern Holstein cows and greater than previous measurements.

Factors that affect heat production in lactating Jersey cows

Heat production (HP) represents a major energy cost in lactating dairy cows. Better understanding of factors that affect HP will improve our understanding of energy metabolism. Our objective was to derive models to explain variation in HP of lactating Jersey cows. Individual animal-period data from 9 studies (n = 293) were used. The data set included cows with a wide range (min to max) in days in milk (44-410) and milk yield (7.8-43.0 kg/d). Diets included corn silage as the predominate forage source, but diets varied (min to max on DM basis) in crude protein (CP; 15.2-19.5%), neutral detergent fiber (NDF; 35.5-43.0%), starch (16.2-31.1%), and crude fat (2.2 to 6.4%) contents. Average HP was (mean ± standard deviation) 22.1 ± 2.86 Mcal/d, or 28.1 ± 3.70% of gross energy intake. Eight models were fit to explain variation in HP: (1) dry matter intake (DMI; INT); (2) milk fat, protein, and lactose yield (MILKCOMP); (3) INT and milk yield (INT+MY); (4) INT and MILKCOMP/DMI (INT+MILKCOMP); (5) mass of digested NDF, CP, and starch (DIG); (6) INT and digested energy (INT+DE); (7) INT and NDF, CP, and starch digestibility (INT+DIG); or (8) INT+MILKCOMP model plus urinary N excretion (INT+MILKCOMP+UN). For all HP models, metabolic body weight was included. All models were derived via a backward elimination approach and included the random effects of study, cow, and period within block within study. The INT models adequately explained variation in HP with a nonrandom effect-adjusted concordance correlation coefficient of 0.84. Similar adjusted concordance correlation coefficients (0.79-0.85) were observed for other HP models. The HP associated with milk protein yield and supply of digestible protein was greater than other milk production and nutrient digestibility variables. The HP associated with urinary N excretion was 5.32. Overall, HP can be adequately predicted from metabolic body weight and DMI. Milk component yield, nutrient digestibility, or urinary N excretion explained similar variation as DMI. Coefficients for milk protein and protein digestion suggest that digestion and metabolism of protein and synthesis of milk protein contribute substantially to HP of a dairy cow.

[Investigations concerning the use of the rumen fermentation regulator monensin in feeding fattening bulls]

In two digestion experiments with wethers and seven feeding experiments with 198 fattening bulls with rations rich in (greater than 55% of the dry matter intake from roughage), the influence of the antibiotic monensin on the digestibility of the ration, on rumen-physiologic characteristic values and on fattening and slaughtering results was investigated. The digestibility of the organic matter and the crude nutrients was not significantly influenced by the use of monensin (20 mg/kg dry matter). The administration of 200 mg monensin per fattening bull and day resulted in an increase of the molar concentration of propionate in the rumen fluid by 9.7 mol%, the concentration of acetate and butyrate decreased by 7.3 resp. 2.8 mol %. On an average of the seven experiments the intake of dry matter was diminished by 5.1% through the use of monensin, the live weight increase remained almost unaffected (3.0% additional increase), feed and energy requirement per kg live weight were improved by 7.9%. The fattening results do not always correspond in the various experiments. The results of the dressing of the carcass, the composition of the carcass and the quality of the meat remained unaffected by the administration of monensin.

Efficiency of utilization of volatile fatty acids for maintenance and energy retention by sheep

1. Two experiments were conducted with lambs sustained entirely by intragastric infusion of volatile fatty acids (VFA), protein, minerals and vitamins. 2. In the first experiment to determine the effects of VFA on nitrogen retention four mixtures of VFA (B, C, D and E) were used containing acetic, propionic and butyric acid in the following molar proportions respectively: 45, 45 and 10; 55, 35 and 10; 65, 25 and 10; 75, 15 and 10. The level of infusion was 836 kJ/live weight0.75 per d and the design was a 4 X 4 Latin square with 14 d periods. There were no significant differences in the N balance between the different mixtures of VFA though mixture B tended to give the highest N retention. 3. Thirty-two lambs were used in the second experiment for measurements of heat production in closed-circuit respiration chambers. Six mixtures of VFA were used. These included mixtures B-E from Expt 1 and in addition two mixtures (A and F) containing acetic, propionic and butyric acid in the following molar proportions respectively: 35, 55 and 10; 85, 5 and 10. The heat production was measured both at 450 and 900 kJ/W0.75 per d, except for mixture F, where it was not possible to achieve a rate of infusion in excess of 675 kJ/W0.75 per d. 4. The energy required for maintenance was determined to be 0.45 +/- 0.02 MJ/kg live weight0.75 per d regardless of the mixture used. 5. The efficiency of utilization for fattening (kf) values for the six mixtures were 0.78, 0.64, 0.57, 0.61, 0.61 and 0.59 for mixtures A, B, C, D, E and F respectively. Only mixture A was significantly better utilized than the other mixtures. This mixture also gave the most efficient N utilization. 6. It is concluded from this evidence that differences in kf for diets normally given to ruminants cannot be attributed to differences in utilization of volatile fatty acids.

[The use of decanted solids from swine manure in the nutrition of fattening calves]

3 feeding trials were carried out in which dried and decanted solids from pig faeces were used in varying proportions. A total of 55 fattening bulls were slaughtered at the end of the trial period. Additionally, a number of characteristic data on ruminal physiology were determined in these trials. The molar proportions of acetate and propionate found with the feeding of rations containing faecal solids were intermediate between those observed in concentrate feeding and those established with the feeding of commercial food pellets containing 40% or 50% straw. Slight increases in the molar proportion of butyrate were noticed when rations were fed containing faecal solids. Nonfasted animals fed rations containing a higher proportion of coarse fodder had a significantly lower slauglitered bady mass (0; 50% straw; 25% straw + 25% faecal solids; 50% faecal solids: 55.7%; 51.9%; 51.1%; or 52.2% of the final fattening weight). They developed a lower proportion of flesh and contained a higher proportion of digesta in the stomach and intestines (11.4%; 18.4%; 17.0%; or 16.3% of the final fattening weight). The proportion of fat contained in the stomach & bowels decreased with the feeding of straw or faecal solids. Other organs and tissues were not affected by the different types of feeding used. An analysis of the results of slaughtering showed that the feeding of faecal solids did not produce any specific effect.
