Abstract
The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of a reduced liner-open phase applied through flow-responsive pulsation (FRP), as a method to provide supplemental stimulation, on teat tissue conditions and milking characteristics in dairy cows. In 2 switch-back trials, 156 Holstein cows milked 3 times daily were assigned to the FRP or conventional (CON) group in alternating sequences. Trial 1 lasted for 35 d and was split into 5 alternating 1-wk periods of FRP and CON. The duration of trial 2 was 84 d, consisting of 4 alternating 3-wk periods of FRP and CON. Premilking udder preparation for both groups consisted of predipping, forestripping, and wiping the teats. Upon milking unit attachment, the FRP cows were milked at a pulsation rate of 50 cycles/min and a pulsation ratio of 30:70 until the preset milk flow threshold of 0.5 kg/min was reached. When the threshold value of 0.5 kg/min was reached, the pulsation was automatically switched to milking mode, which consisted of a pulsation rate of 60 cycles/min and a pulsation ratio of 70:30. Cows in the CON group were milked by milking mode (pulsation rate, 60 cycles/min; pulsation ratio, 70:30) immediately after attachment of the milking unit. We assessed machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue by palpation and visual inspection during trial 1, and we assessed teat-end hyperkeratosis in trial 2. Electronic on-farm milk meters were used to assess milking characteristics: milk yield (kg/milking session), milking unit-on time (s), 2-min milk yield (kg), peak milk flow rate (kg/min), and duration of low milk flow rate (s). Generalized linear mixed models were used to analyze the effects of treatment on the outcome variables. The odds of machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue were lower for cows in the FRP group than for those in the CON group: odds ratio (95% CI) = 0.41 (0.31-0.55). There were no meaningful differences in the odds of teat-end hyperkeratosis between the FRP and CON groups: odds ratio (95% CI) = 1.05 (0.38-2.89). The LSM (95% CI) of milking characteristics in the FRP and CON groups were 14.3 (13.8-14.7) and 14.3 kg (13.8-14.7) for milk yield, respectively; 272 (264-281) and 270 s (262-278) for milking unit-on time, respectively; and 5.0 (4.8-5.1) and 4.9 kg/min (4.7-5.1) for peak milk flow rate, respectively. The FRP group had lower odds of bimodality than the CON group: odds ratio (95% CI) = 0.67 (0.61-0.74). In reference to CON, the odds ratios (95% CI) in FRP were 1.05 (0.76-1.46) for kick-off and 1.02 (0.85-1.23) for milking unit reattachment. In this study, cows that were milked using FRP had lower odds of postmilking short-term changes to the teat tissue and lower odds of bimodal milk flow. We conclude that FRP may foster adequate teat stimulation in cows before the initiation of milk harvest and has the potential to improve teat tissue conditions.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore factors contributing to low machine milk yield of cows with cow-calf contact. Danish Holstein dairy cows were assigned to 1 of 3 cow-calf contact treatments: full-time with the calf (n = 24), part-time with the calf between morning (a.m.) and afternoon (p.m.) milking and separated overnight (n = 23), or separated from the calf at birth (n = 23). Behavior of cows (stepping and kicking in the parlor) and milking procedures (teat or udder stimulation frequency, preparation duration) were recorded at a.m. and p.m. milking on 2 d during wk 4 and 6 of the treatment period (8 milkings per cow). Full-time cows had the lowest machine milk yields (mean ± SE; 6.1 and 6.0 ± 0.7 L at a.m. and p.m. milking, respectively), whereas part-time cows had similar yield to no-contact cows at a.m. milking (19.6 ± 0.7 L) and similar yield to full-time cows at p.m. milking (6.4 ± 0.7 L). Lower machine milk yields in cows with calf contact could not be fully attributed to milk consumption by the calf; however, they also could not be explained by differences in cow parity, calf sex, milking procedures (stimulation frequency; preparation duration), or stepping and kicking (restless) behavior at milking. All cows showed more restless behavior at p.m. milking, which weakly negatively affected machine milk yield, but this was unrelated to stimulation frequency in cow-calf contact cows, indicating that there may be other sources of discomfort or stress at the time of milking for these cows. Part-time versus full-time calf contact improved daily machine milk yields, but low machine milk yield issues merit further research so that cow-calf contact systems can be sustainable for producers.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of supplemental premilking stimulation, provided after manual stimulation, by means of high-frequency pulsation without reduction of the vacuum in the pulsation chamber on milking performance, teat tissue condition, udder health, and well-being in dairy cows. In a randomized controlled trial, Holstein cows (n = 491) from 1 commercial dairy farm with a thrice-per-day milking schedule were assigned to treatment and control groups over a 64-d period. Treatments consisted of a maximum of 20 s of pulsation stimulation at a pulsation rate of 100 (SPS100) or 300 (SPS300) cycles per minute and a pulsation ratio of 25:75, which were applied after completion of manual premilking stimulation upon milking unit attachment. Cows in the control group (CON) received only traditional premilking stimulation by manual forestripping for 6 s, and wiping. Milking characteristics were measured with on-farm milk flow meters. Milking machine-induced short-term (swelling at teat base, firmness at teat end, and teat discoloration) and long-term (teat-end callosity) changes to the teat tissue were assessed manually and visually. Composite milk samples were analyzed for somatic cell counts. Cow hind-leg activity was assessed with 3-dimensional accelerometers. Fecal 11,17-dioxoandrostanes (11,17-DOAs; a group of cortisol metabolites) were determined on wk 4 and 8 to assess the well-being of the cows. Generalized linear mixed models were used to study the effect of treatments on the outcome variables milk yield/milking and milking unit-on time. We observed no meaningful differences among groups for milk yield or milking unit-on time. Least squares means and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for cows in the SPS100, SPS300, and CON groups were 13.9 (13.3-14.5), 14.0 (13.4-14.6), and 13.9 (13.3-14.6) kg for milk yield and 218 (212-224), 218 (211-224), and 218 (212-224) s for milking unit-on time, respectively. Compared with cows in the CON group, the odds (95% CI) of short-term changes were 1.30 (0.95-1.78) for the SPS100 group and 1.50 (1.10-2.05) for the SPS300 group. The odds of long-term changes were 0.94 (0.67-1.34) for cows in the SPS100 group and 0.71 (0.49-1.04) for cows in the SPS300 group. We observed no differences in SCC. In reference to the CON group, the hazard ratio (95% CI) in SPS100 and SPS300, respectively, were 0.35 (0.13-0.98) and 1.22 (0.57-2.64) for clinical mastitis, and 0.34 (0.12-0.95) and 1.28 (0.60-2.73) for culling. The least squares means (95% CI) of hind-leg activity during milking were 8.3 (6.5-10.5), 10.6 (8.1-13.7), and 9.1 (7.2-11.6) movements per milking for the SPS100, SPS300, and CON groups, respectively. The least squares means (95% CI) of fecal 11,17-DOAs concentration (ng/g) at the first and second test days, respectively, were 31.1 (28.1-34.2) and 22.3 (19.2-25.4) for the SPS100 group, 26.4 (23.4-29.4) and 25.2 (22.0-28.4) for the SPS300 group, and 24.8 (21.8-27.9) and 25.0 (21.7-28.3) for the CON group. We conclude that applying supplemental stimulation after manual stimulation through the high-frequency pulsation system tested here did not impart additional benefits to the milk harvesting process, teat tissue condition, somatic cell count, or the well-being of the animals.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of 2 different premilking stimulation regimens, with and without a latency period between tactile stimulation and the attachment of the milking unit, on the teat tissue condition and milking performance of dairy cows. In a randomized controlled crossover study, 145 Holstein cows milked 3 times daily were assigned to treatment (TRT) or control (CON) groups. Premilking udder preparation for the TRT group consisted of the application of a latency period resulting in a preparation lag time of 90 s. The only difference in the premilking udder preparation of the CON group was the absence of latency period; the milking unit was attached immediately after completion of the tactile stimulation. The average duration of total tactile stimulation in TRT and CON group was 8 ± 2 and 9 ± 2 s, respectively. The study lasted for 14 d and was split into 2 periods, each consisting of a 2-d adjustment period followed by 5 d of data collection. We assessed machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue by palpation and visual inspection postmilking. Electronic on-farm milk meters were used to assess milking characteristics (milk yield [kg/milking session], machine-on time [s], 2-min milk yield [kg], and duration of low milk flow rate [s]). Generalized linear mixed models were used to analyze the effect of treatment on the outcome variables. The odds of machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue were lower for cows that received a 90-s preparation lag time (TRT cows) compared with cows in the CON group (odds ratio [95% confidence interval; 95% CI] = 0.13 [0.08-0.20]). The least squares means (95% CI) values of cows in the TRT and CON groups were 15.4 (14.9-15.9) and 15.3 (14.8-15.8) kg, respectively, for milk yield, and 246 (239-253) and 253 (247-260) s for machine-on time. The 2-min milk yield was higher for the TRT compared with CON group cows at all the parity levels. The 2-min milk yields of animals in lactation 1, 2, and ≥3 were 5.7, 5.7, and 6.5 kg, respectively, in the TRT group and 4.6, 5.0, and 5.9 kg in the CON group. The TRT cows spent less time in low milk flow rate compared with CON cows at all parity levels. The durations of low milk flow rate of cows in lactation 1, 2, and ≥3 in the TRT group were 19, 17 and 13 s, respectively, and those in the CON group were 31, 22, and 15 s. In this study, cows that received a latency period, and thus were subjected to a 90-s preparation lag time had lower odds of exhibiting short-term changes to the teat tissue after machine milking, shorter machine-on time, higher 2-min milk yields, and lower durations of low milk flow rates. We conclude that consideration of latency period leading to a 90-s preparation lag time in the premilking stimulation regimen facilitated cows' milk-ejection reflex. This latency period can alleviate the adverse effects of vacuum-induced forces on teat tissue during machine milking, improve udder health, and promote animal well-being.

Abstract
Efficient machine milking requires an optimal interaction of alveolar milk ejection in the udder and milk removal by the milking machine. The aim of the present study was to test whether the equilibrium between continuous milk ejection and milk removal can also be maintained at very fast milking through a particularly high vacuum. Eight Holstein dairy cows were milked at 42, 52, or 60 kPa, with (PS) or without (nPS) prestimulation. Each of the 6 treatments was conducted at 2 afternoon milkings in each animal. The prestimulation lasted 40 s and consisted of forestripping and teat cleaning. The cluster attachment followed after a 20-s latency period. Throughout each milking, B-mode ultrasound videos of the gland cistern of 1 front quarter as well as milk flow and claw vacuum curves were recorded. Total milk yield was neither affected by nPS or PS nor by the vacuum level. Milk removed within the first minute and the first 2 min of milking and average milk flow were higher, and the duration of incline and time until peak milk flow were shorter at PS than at nPS milkings at all vacuum levels. Machine-on time was shorter at PS than at nPS milkings, although only at 42 and 52 kPa vacuum, obviously caused by the high percentage of bimodalities occurring in nPS milkings (17% bimodalities in PS vs. 92% bimodalities in nPS milkings). The frequency of bimodalities was higher at high than at low vacuum both in PS and nPS milkings. Peak flow rate and average milk flow were both higher at higher vacuum levels. The duration of milk flow plateau was shorter at 60 kPa than at 42 kPa milkings. At the highest vacuum (60 kPa), the shorter plateau phase indicated a declining milk ejection rate toward the end of the plateau phase, and milk ejection could no longer keep up with the fast milk removal; hence, a higher milking efficiency at a higher vacuum level could only be achieved as long as the gland cistern remained sufficiently filled by the continuous milk ejection. The ultrasound imaging confirmed this finding as the duration of cisternal area plateau in the recorded front quarter was shorter at high than at low vacuum. Thus, the highest vacuum of 60 kPa did not cause a shorter machine-on time than 52 kPa. In conclusion, milking at a very high vacuum can increase milking efficiency compared with a low vacuum. However, a vacuum reduction at the start and toward the end of milking is required to prevent overmilking if milking is performed at a very high vacuum.

Abstract
To maximise the return on capital invested in the milking parlour, the largest number of cows should be milked gently and completely in the shortest possible time. Bimodal milk flow and overmilking negatively influence the efficiency of the milk removal process and teat health. This observational study had the objective of investigating the prevalence of bimodal milk flow and overmilking, determining which individual and farm-related variables are associated with these occurrences, and determining the association of overmilking and bimodal milk flow with milk yield and with short- and long-term teat changes. Twenty-one farms were visited once during the study period, wherein the milking routine was timed, the teat condition was assessed, and dynamic evaluation of the milking vacuum was performed. A total of 606 vacuum graphic records were obtained, with an average of 29 ± 3 records per farm, in order to indirectly evaluate the milk flow and thus determine the occurrence of bimodal milking and overmilking time. The average percentage of bimodality per farm was 41.7%. The median overmilking time was 59 seconds, and on average, 78.3% of the cows in a herd were overmilked longer than 30 seconds. An association was found at cow level between the occurrence of bimodal milk flow and days in milk, the total stimulation time, parity, and the preparation lag time. The increase in the mean total stimulation time and the number of passes during preparation were associated with a decrease in the proportion of bimodality in the herd. Parity, reattachment of the milking unit and milking in manual mode were associated with an increase in overmilking time of an individual cow. The presence of a clogged air bleed hole in the claw and the reduction of the cluster removal milk flow threshold were associated with an increase in the herd's median overmilking time. The average milk flow decreased with the increase in overmilking time and with the occurrence of bimodal milk flow. An association was also found between the occurrence of bimodal milk flow and decreased milk yield. A mean of 78.4% of cows per farm had short-term teat changes in at least one teat, and 33.6% of evaluated cows per farm displayed at least one teat with hyperkeratosis. These results emphasise the association of bimodality and overmilking on milking efficiency and reinforce the importance of the milkers' actions and the functioning of the milking parlour for its prevention.

Abstract
The objectives were to study the effect of 2 different premilking stimulation regimens, with and without manual forestripping, on teat tissue condition and milking characteristics in dairy cows. In a randomized controlled crossover study, 130 Holstein cows milked 3 times daily were assigned to treatment and control groups. Premilking udder preparation for the treatment group consisted of: (1) predipping with 1% iodine, (2) sequential forestripping of 3 streams of milk per quarter, (3) wiping of teats, and (4) attachment of the milking unit. Premilking udder preparation for the control group was identical except that the forestripping step was omitted. The mean tactile stimulation durations were 16 s and 7 s for the treatment and control group, respectively. The time spent from first tactile stimulus (either forestripping or wiping of teats) to milking unit attachment was kept consistent at 90 s for both groups. The study lasted for 14 d with 2 periods, each consisting of a 2-d adjustment time followed by 5 d of data collection. Machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue were assessed by palpation and visually. The following milking characteristics were assessed with electronic on-farm milk meters: milk yield (MY), milking unit-on time (MUOT), 2-min MY (2MIN), and time spent in low milk flow rate (LMF). Generalized linear mixed models were used to describe the effect of treatment on the outcome variables. The odds of machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue were lower for cows that received forestripping compared with cows that were not forestripped (odds ratio = 0.31; 95% confidence interval = 0.22-0.42). Least squares means (95% confidence interval) for cows that were forestripped and animals that were not forestripped, respectively, were 12.7 (12.2-13.2) and 12.7 (12.2-13.2) kg for MY and 6.1 (5.8-6.4) and 5.6 (5.3-5.9) kg for 2MIN. There was an interaction between treatment and MY for LMF. Time spent in LMF for cows that were forestripped and received no forestripping, respectively, were 18 (17-20) and 24 (23-26) s for a MY level of 10 kg; and 13 (12-14) and 15 (14-16) s for a MY level of 15 kg. The effect of treatment on MUOT was modified by parity. Milking unit-on times for animals in first, second and third or greater lactation, respectively, were 230 (219-243), 249 (236-262), and 260 (249-272) s for cows that were forestripped, and 245 (232-258), 252 (239-266), and 268 (257-281) s for cows that received no forestripping. In this study, cows that were forestripped had shorter MUOT, higher 2MIN, lower LMF, and lower odds of exhibiting changes to the teat tissue after machine milking. We conclude that wiping of teats during premilking udder preparation alone and omitting forestripping of teats without compensating for the loss in stimulation time may not provide sufficient tactile stimulation to elicit the cows' maximum physiological milk-ejection capacity. This can aggravate the adverse effects of vacuum-induced forces on teat tissue during machine milking, diminish animal well-being, and possibly affect udder health.

Abstract
Because of technical limitations, an impact of machine milking on the teat tissue cannot be avoided. The continuance of this impact during and after milking depends on a variety of factors related to the physiological regulation of milk ejection, as well as the different production systems and milking machine settings. Milking machine settings aim to achieve a high milking performance, that is, short machine-on time at a maximum of milk harvest. However, a high milking performance level is often related to an impact on the teat tissue caused by vacuum or liner compression that can lead to pathological dimensions of congestion of the tissue or hyperkeratosis as a long-term effect. Toward the end of milking a decrease of milk flow rate causes a raise of mouthpiece and teat end vacuum levels and hence an increase of the impact on the teat tissue and the risk of tissue damage. The mechanical stress by the milking machine activates a cascade of cellular mechanisms that lead to an excessive keratin growth and thickening of the keratin layer. Consequently, a complete closure of the teat canal is disabled and the risk of bacterial invasion and intramammary infection increases. Another consequence of high vacuum impact is fluid accumulation and congestion in the tissue of teat tip and teat basis because of an obstruction in venous return. The present review paper provides an overview of the available scientific information to describe the interaction between different levels and types of system vacuum, mouthpiece chamber vacuum, teat end (claw) vacuum, liner pressure, and the risk of short-term and long-term impacts on the teat tissue.

Abstract
Background Premilking udder preparation is essential for harvesting high-quality milk as gently, completely, and quickly as possible. The associations between characteristics such as teat-end shape and premilking stimulation on milking characteristics and machine milking-induced changes to the teat tissue condition have not been rigorously investigated. The primary objective was to investigate the interactive effects of manual premilking stimulation (i.e., preparation lag time) and teat-end shape on total milk yield, two-minute milk yield, milking unit-on time, and time in low milk flow rate. Our secondary objective was to study the association of manual premilking stimulation and changes to the teat tissue condition after machine milking (i.e., short-term changes). In a longitudinal prospective cohort study, 384 milking observations from 129 cows were analysed. Holstein cows were housed in sand-bedded free-stall pens, fed a total mixed ration, and milked 3 times a day. Cows were classified by teat-end shape into 1 of 3 categories: pointed, flat, or round. Individual cow milking characteristics were recorded with electronic on-farm milk meters. The duration of manual stimulation, preparation lag time, and presence of short-term changes were documented for each milking observation. General linear mixed models were used to study the interactive effects of preparation lag time and teat-end shape on milking characteristics. Results There was an interaction between preparation lag time and teat-end shape for two-minute milk yield and time in low milk flow rate. The preparation lag time effect was modified by teat-end shape, while no interaction was observed for total milk yield or milking unit-on time. A generalized linear mixed model revealed that preparation lag time was associated with short-term changes in teat tissue condition, where the odds of short-term changes decreased as preparation lag time increased. Conclusions In summary, cows with different teat-end shapes may require different premilking stimulation regimens. Increasing preparation lag time benefits teat tissue condition during machine milking. Further research is warranted to optimize individual premilking stimulation in dairy cows. Abstract
We studied the effects of changes in the milking routine (lack or presence of 30-s prestimulation, 0 or 1, 2 or 4-min delay between preparation and cluster attachment) and environmental perturbation (unusual loud sounds capable of frightening animals just after stall entry or during the course of milking) on milk removal and milking-related behaviour in dairy dromedary camels. A 30-s prestimulation decreased incidence of bimodal milk flow curves and increased occurrence of the best milk ejection patterns with higher milk flow but had limited effect on milk production in our well-trained animals within a good machine milking setting. However, unusual sounds heard from the beginning of milking or even after milk ejection caused inhibition or disruption of milk removal and modification of camels’ behaviour. Milk ejection was significantly delayed (1·58±0·17 min), residual milk increased over 40% of total milk yield and average and peak milk flow rates were significantly lowered when unusual noises were heard from the beginning of milking. These environmental perturbations increased signs of vigilance and the number of attempts to escape the milking parlour. Delaying cluster attachment for over 1 min after the end of udder preparation caused serious milk losses. Up to 62% of total milk was withheld in the udder when the delay reached 4 min. Average and peak milk flow rates also decreased significantly with delayed milking. Signs of vigilance and attempts to escape from the milking parlour appeared when camels waited for over 2 min. After a 4-min delay, camels showed signs of acute stress. Defaecation prior to milk ejection (solid faeces) and rumination during milking can be used to assess camels’ milk ejection during milking. Animal welfare and milking efficiency can be ensured when camels are pre-stimulated, milked in calm conditions and with cluster attachment within a maximum of a 1-min delay after stimulation

Abstract
In order to evaluate milking ability in dromedary camels, 124 milk flow curves were registered during morning milking of 20 dairy Maghrebi dromedary camels. Animals were in lactations 1–8, were 6–19 years old and were 4–15 months of their current lactation. Milk flow curves were recorded using an electronic milk flow meter (Lactocorder®). Milk flow curves were classified in three typical patterns: type 1 represents curves with one high and short peak of milk flow; type 2 represents curves with a moderate mean milk flow rate during a large plateau phase; and type 3 represents curves with lower mean milk flow rate and a relatively longer milking duration. The ratio of the different milk flow patterns in the population evaluated was 40:38:22% for types 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The highest milk yield per milking, average and peak milk flow were observed in camels with type 1 curves (4·24 kg, 1·49 and 3·54 kg/min, respectively) followed by type 2 animals (3·30 kg, 1·12 and 2·12 kg/min, respectively) and lastly type 3 curves (2·34 kg, 0·65 and 1·23 kg/min, respectively). This study confirmed that a major proportion of dromedary camels have a suitable machine milking ability. Nevertheless, our results suggest that pre-stimulation and improving the milking process may improve milking efficiency and guarantee a more complete and rapid emptying of the udder.

Abstract
The goal of the present study was to examine the suitability of a short pre-stimulation (P) for 15 s followed by a latency period (L) of 30 s before cluster attachment for machine milking. In addition we tested the effect of a periodic reduction of the vacuum under the teat (VR) during the massage phase from 43 kPa to 12–15 kPa on milking characteristics and teat tissue condition. The study was carried out in 9 cows in a cross-over design. Animals were milked twice daily, and each of the 4 treatment combinations was used for six subsequent milkings (P+L vs. continuous P, and standard pulsation vs. VR, respectively). Milk flow was recorded during all experimental milkings. Longitudinal ultrasound cross sections of the teat were performed by B-mode ultrasound after the last milking of each treatment at 0, 5, and 15 min after the end of milking, respectively. None of the evaluated milking characteristics (total milk yield, main milking time, peak flow rate, average milk flow) differed between treatments. Teat measures as obtained by ultrasound cross sections showed no significant difference if individual treatments were compared at the three time points individually. However, teat wall thickness (TWT) tended to be smaller in VR vs. non-VR treatments at 5 min after milking (P=0·05). In conclusion, teat preparation consisting of a short stimulation followed by a latency period represents a similarly efficient pre-stimulation as a continuous pre-stimulation. VR seems to reduce the load on the teat tissue during milking and thus reduces the development of oedema and hence a less pronounced increase of TWT while milking characteristics are similar with or without VR.

Abstract
Efficient milking systems, in terms of labour demand, capital investment and cow udder health are critical to successful dairy herd expansion. The objective of this study was to establish the effect of two primary influencing factors on efficient milking performance, i.e. parlour size (number of milking units) and pre-milking routine (full and nil) of spring-calved cows, in a single-operator side-by-side, swing-over milking parlour. Efficiency parameters investigated in a 5×2 factorial design included milk-flow and yield, row time, over-milking duration and operator idle time. Five combinations of parlour size (14, 18, 22, 26 and 30 milking units) each with two different pre-milking routines (Full: spray, strip, wipe, attach clusters, and Nil: attach clusters) were examined with one milking operator. The trial was carried out over 40 milking sessions and cows (up to 120) were randomly assigned to groups (n=14, 18, 22, 26 or 30) before each milking session. Row within a milking session was the experimental unit. The experiment was carried out at both peak and late lactation. The data were analysed with a mixed model using GenStat 13.2. The full pre-milking routine reduced time to milk let-down and milking time, increased average flow rate but did not affect milk yield. As milking unit number increased, the duration of over-milking (defined as time at milk flow rate <0·2 kg/min) increased more with a full compared with nil routine. Thus, the use of pre-milking preparation decreased milking time per cow but as parlour size increased, milking row times, as well as the proportion of cows that were over-milked, also increased, thereby reducing overall efficiency. These results have implications for milking management in single-operator swing-over, tandem and rotary parlours with seasonally calved herds.

Abstract
Experiments were designed to investigate the suitability of a combination of a short manual teat stimulation with a short latency period before teat cup attachment to induce and maintain oxytocin release and milk ejection without interruption. In Experiment 1, seven dairy cows in mid lactation were manually pre-stimulated for 15, 30 or 45 s, followed by either 30 s or 45 s of latency period. It was shown that all treatments induced a similar release of oxytocin without interruption until the end of milking. In particular, the latency period of up to 45 s did not cause a transient decrease of oxytocin concentration. In Experiment 2, milking characteristics were recorded in seven cows each in early, mid, and late lactation, respectively. Because the course of milk ejection depends mainly on the degree of udder filling, individual milkings were classified based on the actual degree of udder filling which differs between lactational stages but also between morning and evening milkings. All animals underwent twelve different udder preparation treatments, i.e. 15, 30, or 45 s of pre-stimulation followed by latency periods of 0, 30, 45, or 60 s. Milking characteristics were recorded. Total milk yield, main milking time and average milk flow rate did not differ between treatments if the degree of udder filling at the start of milking was >40% of the maximum storage capacity. However, if the udder filling was <40%, main milking time was decreased with the duration of a latency period up to 45 s, independent of duration of pre-stimulation. Average milk flow at an udder filling of <40% was highest after a pre-stimulation of 45 s followed by a latency period of another 45 s. In contrast, average milk flow reached its lowest values at a pre-stimulation of 15 s without additional latency period. However, average milk flow after a 15-s pre-stimulation increased with increasing latency period. In conclusion, a very short pre-stimulation when followed by a latency period up to 45 s before teat cup attachment remains a suitable alternative for continuous stimulation to induce milk ejection.

Abstract
To investigate the relationships between milk flow traits and udder health status in primiparous cows, 74 primiparous Holstein cows were randomly selected in 5 herds and monitored monthly throughout the whole lactation. A total of 2902 quarter milk samples were collected for bacteriological analyses and the determination of lysozyme, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase (NAGase) and somatic cell count (SCC). Milk flow curves of the whole udder of each cow were registered with continuous electronic milk flow meters. Teat conditions and teat thickness changes during milking were assessed monthly. Quarters, udders and cows were classified as healthy, latent, inflamed and subclinical depending on SCC and the results of bacteriological analyses. Lysozyme in milk, teat apex score and teat thickness change did not vary with udder health status while NAGase in milk significantly increased as udder health status worsened (P<0·001). Milk production (P<0·001) and time of plateau phase (P<0·05) were significantly lower in subclinical cows in comparison with the others. Animals with a high frequency of bimodal curves in the first 100 days in milk showed the worst udder health status during the whole lactation (P<0·01). Moreover, cows classified as subclinical in the first 3 months of lactation had higher peak milk flow than healthy cows (3·81 v. 3·48 kg/min; P<0·05) and shorter duration of plateau phase, expressed both as minutes and as percentage of time of milk flow (pTPL; P<0·001). Multivariate logistic analysis showed udder health status to be associated with duration of plateau phase, time of milk flow, bimodality and duration of overmilking phase. With short time of plateau phase (pTPL <25%), short time of milk flow (<5 min), presence of bimodality and long overmilking phase (>0·8 min) there was an increased risk of poor udder health status. These milk flow traits can be predictive indicators of udder health status; time of plateau phase, expressed as percentage of time of milk flow, can also be a useful parameter for animal selection.

Abstract
Calf suckling and oxytocin injections are commonly used for pre-milking stimulus in dairy buffaloes under field conditions. A study was conducted to investigate effect of these treatments on reproductive performance. Fifty one Nili-Ravi buffaloes were monitored from parturition up to 150 days postpartum through rectal examination. Data on milk yield, body condition score (BCS) and reproductive parameters were recorded weekly. Postpartum ovulation interval (POI) was determined by presence of an ovulation depression or a very soft corpus luteum haemorrhagicum and was confirmed through milk progesterone levels (MPL). Suckling was used to stimulate milk let down, and where the calf had died, injection of oxytocin was resorted to. Milk samples were analyzed for MPL using radioimmunoassay (RIA) and fat; and milk yield was converted to 4% fat corrected milk (FCM). The mean postpartum uterine involution length (PUI) was 34.30+/-1.33 days. Mean POI was 59.37+/-4.76 days and mean postpartum estrus interval (PEI) was 69.03+/-6.03 days. Suckling period averaged 26.40+/-5.57 days and correlated with POI (r=0.19, P<0.01) and PEI (r=0.23, P<0.01). POI was shortest in buffaloes suckled for one month (P<0.05). Oxytocin was used with a mean dosage of 7.50 IU, delaying placental expulsion time (PET) and POI but shortening PEI. BCS shortened PET, POI and PEI (P<0.01). Mean FCM was 14.50+/-0.20, ranging from 2 to 35 kg/d; and was higher in estrus group; correlating positively with POI (r=0.31, P<0.01). MPL were 1.37+/-0.17 ng/ml and increased after ovulation, remaining greater than 1.5 ng/ml from Day 4 to 14 of the estrus cycle, followed by a rapid decline up to next estrus. BCS in buffaloes resuming oestrus was constantly higher than those failing to resume ovarian cyclicity. Live weight, prepartum was 510.0+/-5.9 kg with a loss of 3.7+/-2.12 kg, 30 days postpartum. The present study suggests a lower reproductive efficiency of dairy buffaloes under the peri-urban farming system reflected by ovarian cyclicity in 68.63% buffaloes within 150 days postpartum and silent estrus in 51.5% of the cases. Increasing suckling duration and use of oxytocin delayed POI, however, POI was shortest in buffaloes suckled for one month. The high yielding buffaloes also manifested better reproductive cyclicity; while moderate yielder showed shorter ovulation intervals and higher conception rate.

Abstract
Milking regimes that can greatly shorten the milking duration of slow-milking cows to improve labour productivity can also result in less complete milking for some cows. There is also a common belief and limited experimental evidence that incomplete milking of subclinically infected cows can cause increased somatic cell count (SCC). To test for this possible detrimental effect of shorter milking regimes, ‘complete’ milking [to automatic cluster remover (ACR) setting of 300 mL/min] and ‘incomplete’ milking (to an ACR setting of 800 mL/min) were applied sequentially to 45 cows over 7 weeks. Incomplete milking resulted in an average of 0.3 L of extra milk being left in the udders, but there was no significant increase in quarter SCC in either infected or uninfected udder quarters. Change in SCC was not related to change in strip yield induced by incomplete milking treatment. In contrast, cow strip yield was positively related to SCC, or the number of infected quarters/cow, regardless of the applied ACR treatment. These apparently contradictory findings are reconciled by noting that infection causes both high strip yields (via uneven yielding quarters) and high SCC. It is concluded that, contrary to popular belief, high SCC, as an indicator of infection, causes high strip yield and that increasing strip yield does not increase cell count.

Abstract
The study of milk flow curves provides useful information for enhancing milking efficiency and protecting udder health by adapting milking machine and milking procedures to the physiological requirements of the cow. The aim of this experiment was to investigate, using field data, the relationships among traits of the milk flow curves, their sources of variation, and milking performances in terms of milk production, machine-on time, and udder health. A total of 2,486 milk flow curves of the whole udder were collected in 82 Italian Holstein-Friesian dairy herds in the Lombardy region of Italy. Approximately one-third (35.1%) of milk flow curves were classified as bimodal. Most flow characteristics were influenced by lactation number, days in milk, and peak flow but also strongly affected by premilking operations. Proper udder preparation, including forestripping and predipping, resulted in better milking performances compared with poor preparation, with greater milk yield per milking, shorter milking time, and lesser bimodality. Premilking delay time, between the start of teat stimulation and cup attachment, affected milking time significantly: The shortest milking time was obtained for a range of delay time between 1 and 60 s. As the delay time increased, the percentage of bimodality dropped significantly. Increasing the number of clusters per operator led to greater percentages of bimodal curves. The greater somatic cell count of cows with bimodal curves supports the hypothesis of the negative effect of bimodality on udder health and indicates the importance of avoiding its occurrence using proper pre-milking procedures.

Abstract
Different teat-cleaning methods were evaluated to determine their effect on the presence of spores from anaerobic bacterial spore-formers in the milk. Artificial contamination was used to achieve uniform contamination of teats to reduce the number of cows and samples needed in the experiments and still obtain adequate power to detect differences among tested methods. Teats were contaminated experimentally with a large amount of Clostridium tyrobutyricum spores in a manure-water slurry. Various types of dry and moistened towels and different combinations of methods using soap or 2 types of towels, together with cleaning times of 10 or 20 s, were compared in 2 Latin square-designed experiments with 7 cows, 7 treatments, and 4 replications in each experiment. In comparison with control (no cleaning and no forestripping), cleaning teats with dry paper towels for 10 s reduced concentration of spores in milk by 45 to 50%. A 50 to 74% reduction was achieved using different types of moist towels for 10 s. Methods using 2 towels, soap, or a longer cleaning time reduced bacterial contamination by 85 to 91%. The most effective methods in reducing milk spore content (96% reduction) were use of a moist washable towel with or without soap followed by drying with a dry paper towel, for a total time of 20 s per cow. One of the best cleaning methods was studied in an additional experiment to determine the effect of different teat contamination mixtures. The Latin square-designed experiment with 8 cows, 8 treatments, and 2 replications showed that cleaning was independent of the tested contamination matrix (manure, soil, or sawdust), type of spores (Cl. tyrobutyricum and Bacillus cereus), or degree of contamination (manure or extra manure).

Abstract
This paper describes some of the major points of progress and challenges in health management of dairy cattle in the last 25 yr. A selection of the leading contributors in the field is acknowledged. Specific advances in the areas of transition cow management, epidemiology, udder health, applied immunology, housing design, calf health, and health-monitoring tools are described. The greatest advances in dairy health in the last 25 yr have been the shifts to disease prevention, rather than treatment, as well as from focus on individual animals to groups and herds. A fundamental advancement has been recognition of the multifactorial nature of almost all diseases of importance in dairy cattle. Epidemiology has been a critical new tool used to describe and quantify the interconnected risk factors that produce disease. Another major advance has been redefining disease more broadly, to include subclinical conditions (e.g., subclinical mastitis, ketosis, rumen acidosis, and endometritis). This expansion resulted both from improved technology to measure function at the organ level and, just as importantly, from the evolution of the health management paradigm in which any factor that limits animal or herd performance might be considered a component of disease. Links between cattle and people through consideration of environmental or ecosystem health are likely to further expand the concept of disease prevention in the future. Notable successes are decreases in the incidence of milk fever, clinical respiratory disease in adults, contagious mastitis, and clinical parasitism. There has also been improved protection through vaccination against coliform mastitis and bovine virus diarrhea. Since 1980, average herd size and milk production per cow have increased dramatically. Despite these increased demands on cows' metabolism and humans' management skills, the incidence of most common and important diseases has remained stable. Great progress has been made in understanding the biology of energy metabolism and immune function in transition dairy cows, the time at which the majority of disease occurs. Coupled with an emerging understanding of how best to provide for dairy cows' behavioral needs, transition cow management promises to be the foundation for progress in maintenance and enhancement of the health of dairy cows in the next 25 yr.

Abstract
The application of prestimulation results in enhanced milking performance compared with milking without prestimulation. In the present study oxytocin (OT) release and milking characteristics were investigated in 43 dairy cows after the application of various prestimulation routines by vibration stimulation lasting between 0 and 90 s. Additionally, different maximum pulsation vacuum settings during vibration stimulation were investigated. The actual degree of udder fill was calculated as a percentage of the estimated storage capacity. The amplitude of OT release, total milk yield, and stripping milk yield did not differ between prestimulation routines. Increased maximum pulsation vacuum during vibration stimulation resulted in milk flow during prestimulation, but did not negatively influence milking characteristics. The lag time from the start of teat stimulation until the start of milk ejection was negatively correlated with the degree of udder fill. This relationship was the reason for variations in optimal duration of prestimulation. The optimal duration of prestimulation to receive immediate and continuous milk flow at the start of milking was 90 s in udders containing small amounts of milk, whereas the optimal duration was only 20 s in well-filled udders. A short prestimulation enhances milking stall capacity when milking full udders, and a prolonged prestimulation reduces the total vacuum load on the teat when milking udders that are not full.

Abstract
Four different methods of teat preparation during milking in an automatic milking system were studied in 2 experiments on Red Holstein/German Fleckvieh cross-breed cows. Milking routines used were milking: 1) without premilking teat preparation; 2) with one cleaning cycle (58 to 60 s) with cold (13 to 15 degrees C) water; 3) with one cleaning cycle with warm water (30 to 32 degrees C); or 4) with 2 cleaning cycles (122 s) with warm water. In experiment 1, milking characteristics were evaluated and milking routines were randomly assigned to 62 cows during 3 measuring periods of 24 h each. In experiment 2, 10 randomly selected cows were assigned to the same milking routines during 4 d and blood samples for oxytocin (OT) determination were taken during milking in addition to milk flow recording. Milk production, peak flow rate, total, and quarter milk yields showed no differences among treatments. Premilking preparation with cold water compared with warm water showed no differences in OT release, milk yield, peak flow rate, main milking time, average flow rate, or time until main milk flow. Baseline OT concentrations were consistently low. At the start of teat cup attachment without premilking teat preparation OT concentrations remained on the basal level but were elevated in all other treatments. By 30 s from the start of milking, OT concentrations were markedly increased in all treatments and were no longer different between treatments. In conclusion, the teat cleaning device used in the automatic milking system, either with warm or cold water, was suitable to induce milk ejection in cows before the start of milking.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis remains as the disease causing the biggest economic losses to the dairy industry, despite the intensive research and prevention measures at herd level carried out for decades. Antibiotics are widely used to combat mastitis, but focus should be shifted from treatment to more economical and efficient prevention. The bacteriological aetiology of mastitis has changed from contagious to environmental pathogens, which has reduced the efficacy of the traditional mastitis control strategies. Considerable progress in the understanding of epidemiology, immunology, diagnostics and pathogenesis of mastitis has been made. The modern molecular biological methods offer good possibilities for the research of the epidemiological and virulence aspects of bacteria, which may help in building-up specific mastitis control strategies for dairy herds. Studies on the host response and relationship between somatic cell count and susceptibility to mastitis offer tools for genetic improvement of dairy cows. Biotechnological approaches for mastitis prevention are in the developmental stage, but many problems are associated, e.g. with vaccination of dairy cows against mastitis. Different methods of immunomodulation for the prevention of mastitis have shown promise in experimental trials, but the evidence is not yet enough to support commercial applications. Improving nutrition, housing and environment of dairy cattle are still crucial in the prevention of mastitis, especially during the most susceptible period after parturition. New milking techniques including robotic milking may provide better possibility for proper milking and improved udder health. Mastitis control should be part of the herd health programme in the dairy herds. In this paper, results from recent research and proposals for new prevention strategies in the field of mastitis are reviewed.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of forestripping as a premilking stimulation technique on milk yield, milking unit attachment time, and milk flow rates in Holstein dairy cattle. Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 24) were divided into two groups (HPE, high producing, early lactation; LPL, low producing, late lactation) based on prestudy milk yield and stage of lactation. Within the production group, cows were randomly assigned into treatment (n = 6) and control groups (n = 6) in a switchback design. Cows were milked twice daily and treatments were switched after 20 milkings. Premilking udder preparation for the treatment group was as follows: forestripping, predipping with 0.5% iodine, and drying with paper towels followed by unit attachment. Udder preparation for the control group was identical except forestripping was not performed. Data were analyzed by using the PROC Means and PROC Mixed models described by SAS. During the study, cows in the HPE group produced significantly more milk and had longer milking unit attachment times compared with cows in the LPL group. The milk flow rate was 0.36 kg/min faster for the HPE cows compared with the LPL cows. There was no significant effect of order of treatment administration on any outcome variable. There were no significant differences in milk yield, milk unit attachment time, or milk flow for animals that were forestripped compared with animals that were not forestripped. In this study, the addition of forestripping to an otherwise acceptable premilking udder preparation routine did not increase milking performance of multiparous Holstein dairy cows.

Abstract
The importance of elevated concentrations of oxytocin (OT) during the entire milking period was investigated in seven primiparous dairy cows with inherent disturbed milk ejection and in sixteen healthy cows with disturbed milk ejection induced by placing them in an operating theatre. Disturbance of milk removal in both groups has previously been demonstrated to be exclusively due to central blockage of the expected OT release in response to teat stimulation and milking. However, milk ejection can be induced by exogenous OT. OT (0.2 i.u.) was injected i.v. before milking and 49 +/- 6% of the total milk was removed. When plasma OT decreased, milk flow stopped. In response to a second and third injection of 0.2 i.u. OT, 30 +/- 4 and 7 +/- 2% of the milk were removed respectively. The remaining milk was removed with 10 i.u. OT. The lag time from injection of OT to the start of milk flow was inversely correlated with the amount of milk actually removed in response to the OT injection. If 0.2 i.u. OT was injected during intramammary pressure (IMP) recording, IMP immediately increased to its maximum value. After 2.5 +/- 0.3 min, IMP decreased to an intermediate IMP (between preinjection and maximum IMP). After two additional injections of 0.2 i.u. OT and after injection of 0.5 i.u. OT, IMP increased to a similar maximum. However, after injection of 0.5 i.u. OT, maximum IMP lasted longer (2.9 +/- 0.3 min; P < 0.05) than after injections of 0.2 i.u. If OT was continuously infused (0.15 i.u./min) during milking, milk flow lasted until the udder was completely emptied. IMP increased during OT infusion to a maximum which remained stable until infusion was stopped after 10 min. The same IMP maximum was reached after the first individual OT injection (0.2 i.u.), but when plasma OT decreased towards basal concentrations, milk flow ceased and IMP decreased to an intermediate level. Thus continuously elevated OT concentrations such as those during infusion or during normal milking are necessary for complete milk removal.

Abstract
The principles for milking the 13,600-kg (30,000-lb) cow are the same as for any other dairy cow: she should be milked gently, quickly, and completely with minimal machine stripping or over-milking. The application of these principles may differ, however, because high producing cows have 1) lower premilking stimulus requirements than low producers, 2) higher peak milking rates and higher average flow rates (yet longer times to milkout), 3) higher incidence of teat orifice lesions such as hyperkeratosis, and 4) higher risk of new mastitis infections. Existing national and international standards for construction and performance of milking systems may not be adequate to manage the higher expected flow rates through the milking unit and milklines. Such standards need to be reviewed and perhaps revised to ensure appropriate sizing and flow characteristics based on sound engineering principles and physiological requirements. Milking four times per day increases daily milk production compared with twice per day, and milking eight times per day increased daily production compared with four times per day. Cows milked more than four times per day might not require complete milking out at every milking. More frequent milking (or milking on demand) may be achieved with robot milkers, provided that robots can match the reliability of human milkers.
