Use of nitrogen from ammoniated alfalfa hay, urea, soybean meal, and animal protein meal by lactating cows

A network meta-analysis of the impact of feed-grade and slow-release ureas on lactating dairy cattle

A network meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effects of feeding feed-grade urea (FGU) or slow-release urea (SRU) as a replacement for true protein supplements (control; CTR) in high-producing dairy cattle diets. Research papers were selected (n = 44) from experiments published between 1971 and 2021 based on the following criteria: dairy breed, detailed description of the isonitrogenous diets fed, provision of FGU or SRU (or both), high-yielding cows (>25 kg/cow per day), and results that included at least milk yield and composition, but data on nutrient intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation profile, and N utilization were also considered. Most studies compared only 2 treatments, and a network meta-analysis approach was adopted to compare the effects among CTR, FGU, and SRU. Data were analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model network meta-analysis. Forest plots of milk yield were used to visualize the estimated effect size of treatments. Cows included in the study produced 32.9 ± 5.7 L/d of milk, 3.46 ± 5.0% of fat, and 3.11 ± 0.2% of protein with an intake of 22.1 ± 3.45 kg of dry matter. Average diet composition was 1.65 ± 0.07 Mcal of net energy for lactation, 16.4 ± 1.45% CP, 30.8 ± 5.91% neutral detergent fiber, and 23.0 ± 4.62% starch. Average supply of FGU was 209 g/cow per day, whereas the average supply of SRU was 204 g/cow per day. With some exceptions, feeding FGU and SRU did not affect nutrient intake and digestibility, N utilization, and milk yield and composition. However, the FGU reduced the acetate proportion (61.6 vs. 59.7 mol/100 mol) and the SRU reduced the butyrate proportion (12.4 vs. 11.9 mol/100 mol) compared with CTR. Ruminal ammonia-N concentration increased from 8.47 to 11.5 and 9.3 mg/dL in CTR, FGU, and SRU, respectively. Urinary nitrogen excretion increased from 171 to 198 g/d in CTR versus the 2 urea treatments, respectively. The use of moderate doses of FGU in high-producing dairy cows may be justified based on its lower cost.

Effect of ammonia fiber expansion-treated wheat straw and a recombinant fibrolytic enzyme on rumen microbiota and fermentation parameters, total tract digestibility, and performance of lambs

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX)-treated wheat straw pellets and a recombinant fibrolytic enzyme on the rumen microbiome, rumen fermentation parameters, total tract diet digestibility, and performance of lambs. Eight rumen cannulated wethers and 60 lambs (n = 15 per diet, 8 rams and 7 ewes) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design digestibility study and a complete randomized growth performance study, respectively. Four treatment diets were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial structure with AFEX wheat straw (0% or 30% AFEX straw pellets on a dietary DM basis replacing alfalfa hay pellets) and fibrolytic enzyme (with or without XYL10C, a β-1,4-xylanase, from Aspergillus niger) as main factors. Enzyme was applied at 100 mg/kg of diet DM, 22 h before feeding. Rumen bacteria diversity Pielou evenness decreased (P = 0.05) with AFEX compared with the control diet and increased (P < 0.01) with enzyme. Enzyme increased (P ≤ 0.02) the relative abundancies of Prevotellaceae UCG-004, Christensenellaceae R-7 group, Saccharofermentans, and uncultured Kiritimatiellaeota. Total protozoa counts were greater (P ≤ 0.04) in the rumen of lambs fed AFEX compared with control, with enzyme reducing (P ≤ 0.05) protozoa counts for both diets. Digestibility of DM did not differ (P > 0.10) among diets, but digestibility of CP was reduced (P = 0.001), and digestibility of NDF and ADF increased (P < 0.05) as AFEX replaced alfalfa. Compared with control, AFEX promoted greater DMI (P = 0.003) and improved ADG up to 42 d on feed (P = 0.03), but not (P = 0.51) over the full ~94-d experiment. Consequently, overall G:F was reduced (P = 0.04) for AFEX when compared with control (0.188 vs. 0.199), but days on feed were lower (P = 0.04) for AFEX (97 vs. 91 d). Enzyme improved DMI of AFEX up to day 70 (P = 0.01), but did not affect DMI of the control diet. Enzyme addition improved ADG of lambs fed both diets in the first 28 d (P = 0.02), but not over the entire feeding period (P ≥ 10). As a result, G:F was improved with enzyme for the first 28 d (P = 0.04), but not overall (P = 0.45). This study shows that AFEX-treated wheat straw can replace alfalfa hay with no loss in lamb growth performance. Additionally, the enzyme XYL10C altered the rumen microbiome and improved G:F in the first month of the feeding.

Effects of Feeding Formate-Treated Alfalfa Silage or Red Clover Silage on the Production of Lactating Dairy Cows

In trial 1, 15 Holsteins were fed 3 total mixed rations (TMR) with 33% neutral detergent fiber in 3 x 3 Latin squares (28-d periods). Two TMR contained (dry matter basis): 40% control alfalfa silage (CAS) or 40% ammonium tetraformate-treated alfalfa silage (TAS), 20% corn silage (CS), 33% high-moisture shelled corn (HMSC), 6% solvent soybean meal (SSBM), and 18% crude protein (CP); the third TMR contained 54% red clover silage (RCS), 6% dried molasses, 33% HMSC, 6% SSBM, and 16.3% CP. Silages differed in nonprotein N (NPN) and acid detergent insoluble N (ADIN; % of total N): 50 and 4% (CAS); 45 and 3% (TAS); 27 and 8% (RCS). Replacing CAS with TAS increased intake, yields of milk, fat-corrected milk, protein, and solids-not-fat, and apparent dry matter and N efficiency. Replacing CAS with RCS increased intake and N efficiency but not milk yield. Replacing CAS or TAS with RCS lowered milk urea N, increased apparent nutrient digestibility, and diverted N excretion from urine to feces. In trial 2, 24 Holsteins (8 ruminally cannulated) were fed 4 TMR in 4 x 4 Latin squares (28-d periods). Diets included the CAS, TAS, and RCS (RCS1) fed in trial 1 plus an immature RCS (RCS2; 29% NPN, 4% ADIN). The CAS, TAS, and RCS2 diets contained 36% HMSC and 3% SSBM and the RCS1 diet contained 31% HMSC and 9% SSBM. All TMR had 50% legume silage, 10% CS, 27% neutral detergent fiber, and 17 to 18% CP. Little difference was observed between cows fed CAS and TAS. Intakes of DM and yields of milk, fat-corrected milk, fat, protein, lactose, and solids-not-fat, and milk fat and protein content were greater on alfalfa silage vs. RCS. Blood urea N, milk urea N, ruminal ammonia, and total urinary N excretion were reduced on RCS, suggesting better N utilization on the lower NPN silage. Apparent N efficiency tended to be higher for cows fed RCS but there was no difference when N efficiency was expressed as kilograms of milk yield per kilogram of total N excreted.

Impacts of the source and amount of crude protein on the intestinal supply of nitrogen fractions and performance of dairy cows

The objective of this article was to review and summarize the significance of the amount and source of dietary crude protein supplements on the supply of nitrogen fractions passing to the small intestine and the performance of lactating dairy cows. A meta-analysis was used to evaluate 2 data sets, one for nitrogen flow to the small intestine and one for performance of cows. The response of dairy cows to rumen-undegradable protein supplements is variable. A portion of this variable response from research trials is explained by the source of crude protein in the control diet, the proportion and source of rumen-undegradable protein in the experimental diet, the effect of rumen-undegradable protein on microbial protein outflow from the rumen, the degradability and amino acid content of the rumen-undegradable protein, and the crude protein percentage of the diet. Compared with soybean meal, the mean milk production responses to feeding rumen-undegradable protein supplements ranged from -2.5 to +2.75%. Because of the large variation and small magnitude of response when rumen-undegradable protein supplements are fed compared with soybean meal, efficiency of nitrogen utilization and the cost to benefit ratio for these crude protein supplements may determine the source and amount of crude protein to feed to dairy cows in the future.

Sources of Variation in Rates of in Vitro Ruminal Protein Degradation

Rates and extents of ruminal protein degradation for casein, solvent soybean meal (SSBM), expeller soybean meal (ESBM), and alfalfa hay were estimated from net appearance of NH3 and total amino acids in in vitro media containing 1 mM hydrazine and 30 mg/L of chloramphenicol. Protein was added at 0.13 mg of N/mL of medium, and incubations were conducted for 4 to 6 h, usually with hourly sampling. Inocula were obtained from ruminally cannulated donor cows fed diets of grass silage or alfalfa and corn silages plus concentrates. Preincubation or dialysis of inocula was used to suppress background NH3 and total amino acids; however, preincubation yielded more rapid degradation rates for casein and SSBM and was used in subsequent incubations. Preincubation with added vitamins, VFA, hemin, or N did not alter protein degradation. Protein degradation rates estimated for SSBM, ESBM, and alfalfa were not different when computed from total N release or N release in NH3 plus total amino acids, regardless of whether amino acids were quantified using ninhydrin colorimetry or o-phthalaldehyde fluorescence. Accounting for the release of peptide-N also did not affect estimated degradation. However, casein degradation rates were more rapid when using total N release or accounting for peptide-N, indicating significant accumulation of small peptides during its breakdown. Rates also were more rapid with inocula from lactating cows versus nonlactating cows with lower feed intake. Protein degradation rates were different due to time after feeding: casein rate was more rapid, but SSBM and ESBM rates were slower with inocula obtained after feeding. Several characteristics of ruminal inoculum that influenced breakdown of the rapidly degraded protein casein did not appear to have direct effects on degradation of protein in soybean meal.

Effects of dietary protein solubility on nitrogen losses from lactating dairy cows and comparison with predictions from the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System

This experiment determined the effects of dietary protein solubility on amount, form, and route of nitrogen loss in lactating Holstein dairy cows, and the ability of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) to accurately predict rumen microbial yield, serum urea N (SUN), milk urea N (MUN), and fecal N. Eighteen multiparous Holstein cows were assigned randomly to one of three dietary treatments that were similar in crude protein (17.7%) content but differed in their content of soluble intake protein (SIP). Dietary contents of SIP, as % of total CP were 30, 36, and 48%. The experimental period was 21 d, and total N balance collections were done during the last 5 d. As dietary content of SIP increased, excretion of urinary N increased quadratically, and it was the primary route of N excretion. Urinary excretion of purine derivatives (PD) responded quadratically as dietary SIP content increased. The CNCPS predicted a quadratic decrease in total metabolizable protein (MP) supply. No effect of dietary content of SIP was detected on MUN and SUN. The CNCPS predicted a quadratic decrease in SUN and MUN as dietary SIP increased. Results from this study indicated that changing the dietary content of SIP altered routes of N excretion in dairy cows, but had no effect on total N balance. The CNCPS did not adequately predict changes in SUN and MUN for cows fed diets varying in SIP.

An evaluation of postabsorptive protein and amino acid metabolism in the lactating dairy cow

The current protein system utilized in the US was formulated in 1985 with minor modifications in 1989 and has gained widespread acceptance. However, some of the assumptions that were adopted by the National Research Council (NRC) appear to be inconsistent with observational data. The marginal efficiency of conversion of absorbed protein to milk protein was assumed by NRC to be 70% until the requirement for absorbed protein was met and was 0% thereafter. The mean marginal efficiency observed for abomasal casein infusions reported in the literature and collected at the Purina Mills Research Center was 21%. Sorting the data into protein-sufficient and protein-deficient classes did not support the assumptions of 70% marginal efficiency in a deficient state and 0% marginal efficiency in the sufficient state. Analyses of nitrogen balance data and abomasal flow data and the work of Van Straalen et al. (77) indicated that energy status of the animal plays a role in determining the response to absorbed protein. Such a consideration was not included in the NRC model. The adoption of equations that describe metabolism at the organ level as opposed to the animal level would allow direct use of organ level data for parameterization and may provide better predictions. Simple representations of digestion and absorption, splanchnic metabolism, and mammary metabolism of amino acids or protein in aggregate are described. These representations could be used to improve the current system and could serve as a bridge to adoption of more complex models.

Effects of rumen-undegradable protein on dairy cow performance: a 12-year literature review

In order to integrate and analyze knowledge on the use of protein supplements and protein nutrition of lactating dairy cows, we compiled a review of 108 studies published throughout the world, but principally in the Journal of Dairy Science between 1985 and 1997. In 29 comparisons from 15 metabolism trials, soybean meal was replaced by high amounts of rumen undegradable protein (RUP) as a supplement; the benefits were not consistently observed for flow to the duodenum, essential amino acids, or lysine and methionine. High RUP diets resulted in decreased microbial protein synthesis in 76% of the comparisons. However, fish meal provided a good balance of lysine and methionine when calculated as a percentage of total essential amino acids. In 127 comparisons from 88 lactation trials that were published from 1985 to 1997, researchers studied the effects of replacing soybean meal with high RUP sources, such as heated and chemically treated soybean meal, corn gluten meal, distillers grains, brewers grains, blood meal, meat and bone meal, feather meal, or blends of these sources; milk yield was significantly higher in only 17% of the comparisons. Fish meal and treated soybean meal accounted for most of the positive effects on milk yield from RUP; corn gluten meal resulted in mostly negative results. The percentage of fat in milk was depressed more by fish meal than by other RUP sources. Protein percentage was decreased in 28 comparisons and increased in only 6 comparisons, probably reflecting the decrease in microbial protein synthesis, as was observed for diets high in RUP. The data strongly suggest that increased RUP per se in dairy cow diets, which often results in a decrease in RDP and a change in absorbed AA profiles, does not consistently improve lactational performance.
