Abstract
Metal homeostasis is central to all forms of life, as metals are essential micronutrients with toxic effects at elevated levels. Macromolecular machines facilitate metal uptake into the cells and their intracellular level is regulated by multiple means, which can involve RNA elements and proteinaceous components. While the general principles and components for uptake and cellular content regulation of, e.g., cobalt have been identified for proteobacteria, the corresponding mechanism in other Gram-negative bacteria such as cyanobacteria remain to be established. Based on their photosynthetic activity, cyanobacteria are known to exhibit a special metal demand in comparison to other bacteria. Here, the regulation by cobalt and cobalamin as well as their uptake is described for Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, a model filamentous heterocyst-forming cyanobacterium. Anabaena contains at least three cobalamin riboswitches in its genome, for one of which the functionality is confirmed here. Moreover, two outer membrane-localized cobalamin TonB-dependent transporters, namely BtuB1 and BtuB2, were identified. BtuB2 is important for fast uptake of cobalamin under conditions with low external cobalt, whereas BtuB1 appears to function in cobalamin uptake under conditions of sufficient cobalt supply. While the general function is comparable, the specific function of the two genes differs and mutants thereof show distinct phenotypes. The uptake of cobalamin depends further on the TonB and a BtuFCD machinery, as mutants of tonB3 and btuD show reduced cobalamin uptake rates. Thus, our results provide novel information on the uptake of cobalamin and the regulation of the cellular cobalt content in cyanobacteria.

Abstract
The cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina platensis) is a natural source of considerable amounts of ingredients that are relevant for nutra- and pharmaceutical uses. Different hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances can be obtained by extraction from the biomass. The respective extraction techniques determine the composition of substances in the extract and thus its biological activity. In this short review, we provide an overview of the hydrophilic compounds (phenols, phycobiliproteins, polysaccharides, and vitamins) and lipophilic ingredients (chlorophylls, vitamins, fatty acids, and glycolipids) of Arthrospira platensis. The principal influences of these substances on blood and tissue cells are briefly summarized.

Abstract
Background Despite the fact that most vitamins are present in a variety of foods, malnutrition, unbalanced diets or insufficient intake of foods are still the cause of vitamin deficiencies in humans in some countries. Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) is a complex compound that is only naturally produced by bacteria and archea. It has been reported that certain strains belonging to lactic acid bacteria group are capable of synthesized water-soluble vitamins such as those included in the B-group, as vitamin B12. In this context, the goal of the present paper was to evaluate and characterize the production of vitamin B12 in Lactobacillus coryniformis CRL 1001, a heterofermentative strain isolated from silage. Results Cell extract of L. coryniformis CRL 1001, isolated from silage, is able to correct the coenzyme B12 requirement of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium AR 2680 in minimal medium. The chemical characterization of the corrinoid-like molecule isolated from CRL 1001 cell extract using HPLC and mass spectrometry is reported. The majority of the corrinoid produced by this strain has adenine like Coα-ligand instead 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole. Genomic studies revealed the presence of the complete machinery of the anaerobic biosynthesis pathway of coenzyme B12. The detected genes encode all proteins for the corrin ring biosynthesis and for the binding of upper (β) and lower (α) ligands in one continuous stretch of the chromosome. Conclusions The results here described show for the first time that L. coryniformis subsp. coryniformis CRL 1001 is able to produce pseudocobalamin containing adenine instead of 5,6-dimethlbenzimidazole in the Coα-ligand. Genomic analysis allowed the identification and characterization of the complete de novo biosynthetic pathway of the corrinoid produced by the CRL 1001 strain.

Abstract
An active substance with high hyaluronidase inhibitory effect was isolated from the edible cyanobacterium Nostochopsis lobatus MAC0804NAN strain and characterized. The active component in the hot water extract was purified by anion exchange and gel filtration chromatography and was found to be a polysaccharide. The IC(50) against hyaluronidase of the purified polysaccharide was 7.18 μg/ml whose inhibitory activity is 14.5 times stronger than that of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG), an anti-allergy medication. The carbohydrate composition which was analyzed by GC-MS and NMR was found to be composed mainly of glucose, glucuronic acid, fucose, 2-O-methylfucose, mannose, galactose and xylose.

Abstract
The usual dietary sources of Vitamin B12 are animal-derived foods, although a few plant-based foods contain substantial amounts of Vitamin B12. To prevent Vitamin B12 deficiency in high-risk populations such as vegetarians, it is necessary to identify plant-derived foods that contain high levels of Vitamin B12. A survey of naturally occurring plant-derived food sources with high Vitamin B12 contents suggested that dried purple laver (nori) is the most suitable Vitamin B12 source presently available for vegetarians. Furthermore, dried purple laver also contains high levels of other nutrients that are lacking in vegetarian diets, such as iron and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Dried purple laver is a natural plant product and it is suitable for most people in various vegetarian groups.

Abstract
The usual dietary sources of vitamin B12 are animal-source based foods, including meat, milk, eggs, fish, and shellfish, although a few plant-based foods such as certain types of dried lavers (nori) and mushrooms contain substantial and considerable amounts of vitamin B12, respectively. Unexpectedly, detailed characterization of vitamin B12 compounds in foods reveals the presence of various corrinoids that are inactive in humans. The majority of edible blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and certain edible shellfish predominately contain an inactive corrinoid known as pseudovitamin B12. Various factors affect the bioactivity of vitamin B12 in foods. For example, vitamin B12 is partially degraded and loses its biological activity during cooking and storage of foods. The intrinsic factor-mediated gastrointestinal absorption system in humans has evolved to selectively absorb active vitamin B12 from naturally occurring vitamin B12 compounds, including its degradation products and inactive corrinoids that are present in daily meal foods. The objective of this review is to present up-to-date information on various factors that can affect the bioactivity of vitamin B12 in foods. To prevent vitamin B12 deficiency in high-risk populations such as vegetarians and elderly subjects, it is necessary to identify plant-source foods that contain high levels of bioactive vitamin B12 and, in conjunction, to prepare the use of crystalline vitamin B12-fortified foods.
