Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Single-center retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE To compare the correction of fractional curve and L5 tilt in 2RVBT versus PSF with LIV in the lumbar spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Vertebral body tethering, an AIS fusion-alternative, avoids rigid constructs, allowing for lower instrumented vertebra (LIV) selection. Single-tether constructs break, but mini-open thoracoscopic assistant double-row vertebral body tethering (2RVBT) reduces this. Limited comparative studies exist with posterior spinal fusion (PSF). METHODS Retrospective analysis of AIS correction surgeries with lumbar LIV using preoperative and minimum 2-year postoperative imaging. Patients were divided into 2RVBT or PSF groups. Data included age, Riser, UIV, LIV, instrumented levels, and revision rates. Radiographic analyses included preoperative and postoperative main curve Cobb (MCC), secondary curve Cobb (SCC), fractional curve Cobb (FCC), and L5 tilt. RESULTS Ninety-nine patients participated (49 in 2RVBT, 50 in PSF). Preoperatively, secondary CC differed significantly (2RVBT: 44.6±10.4 degrees vs. PSF: 39.5±11.8 degrees, P =0.026), but not L5 tilt, MCC, or FCC. Postoperatively, MCC (2RVBT: 25.7±12.3 degrees vs. PSF: 19.5±7.4 degrees, P =0.003) and SCC (2RVBT: 18.0±8.4 degrees vs. PSF: 14.5±6.6 degrees, P =0.012) varied. Preoperative to postoperative changes in MCC (2RVBT: -32.0±11.3 degrees vs. PSF: -37.2±13.3 degrees, P =0.044) and L5 tilt (-13.8±9.0 degrees vs. PSF: -8.1±6.8 degrees, P =0.001) differed. Revision rates were similar (2RVBT: 2.0%, PSF: 4.0%, P =0.57). In 2RVBT, 3 tethers broke, 1 revision occurred for a broken tether, and 1 pleural effusion needed thoracocentesis. In PSF, 1 superficial infection needed surgery, and 1 revision was for add-on phenomenon. After PSM for Lenke classification, 54 patients remained (27 in each group). At 2 years, 2RVBT showed less MCC correction (-30.8±11.8 degrees vs. -38.9±11.9 degrees, P =0.017), but greater L5 tilt correction (-14.6±10.0 degrees vs. -7.5±6.0 degrees, P =0.003). CONCLUSIONS This study with a minimum 2-year radiographic follow-up demonstrates that 2RVBT results in greater L5 tilt correction when compared with posterior spinal fusion after PSM for Lenke classification and similar rates of revision surgery. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate evidence on the effectiveness of combined bracing and exercise on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). From inception to April 28, 2022, PubMed and Web of Science searched for randomized clinical and nonrandomized prospective studies reporting Cobb angle (CA), angle of trunk rotation (ATR), quality of life (QoL), and pulmonary function (PF) in AIS patients treated with exercise and braces (10 years-skeletal maturity). Two authors analyzed and extracted data for this review. The PEDro scale was used to assess the risk of bias (RoB). Therapy protocols and basic data have been collected. Each CA, ATR, QoL, and PF study's evidence and strength were also included. A total of 12 studies with 714 patients with AIS were included. Five studies used a control group with exercises and 7 with braces. The results showed that exercise-brace can decrease CA and ATR and increase QoL and PF with AIS; however, the strength of conclusion for all outcomes was moderate. In this review, 4 studies were categorized as low RoB, 3 as moderate RoB, and 5 as high RoB. Level of evidence analysis revealed that 12 studies were classified as level of evidence B. The current studies do not sufficiently support the effects of exercise and brace therapy on CA, ATR, QoL, and PF in patients with AIS.

Abstract
PURPOSE To perform a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Brazilian-Portuguese versions of the Brace Questionnaire in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS A forward-backward translation process was employed to produce a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Brace Questionnaire, followed by comprehensive cross-cultural adaptation stages. The measurements of internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed by Cronbach's a and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the concurrent validity by comparison with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 84 scoliosis patients (age 13.4 ± 2.0 years, thoracic Cobb angle 33.3° ± 13.8°, and lumbar Cobb angle 29.8° ± 14.3°) were included. The Brace Questionnaire showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.93) and moderate reliability (ICC = 0.86). The correlations between the Brace Questionnaire and Scoliosis Research Society-22 were r = 0.66; p = 0.011. In addition, it was found that the Brazilian version of the Brace Questionnaire does not have ceiling and floor effects. CONCLUSIONS The Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation of the brace questionnaire shows excellent reliability and can be a valid tool for psychometric assessment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis that affects children aged 10-18 years old, manifesting in a three-dimensional spinal deformity. This study aimed to explore outcome measures used in defining AIS treatment success. Particularly, analyzing the extent of qualitative and quantitative (radiographic and quality of life domains) measures to evaluate AIS and whether AIS treatment approaches (surgical, bracing and physiotherapy) influences outcomes used as proxies of treatment success. METHODS EMBASE and MEDLINE databases were used to conduct a systematic scoping review with 654 search queries. 158 papers met the inclusion criteria and were screened for data extraction. Extractable variables included: study characteristics, study participant characteristics, type of study, type of intervention approach and outcome measures. RESULTS All 158 studies measured quantitative outcomes. 61.38% of papers used radiographic outcomes whilst 38.62% of papers used quantitative quality of life outcomes to evaluate treatment success. Irrespective of treatment intervention utilized, the type of quantitative outcome measure recorded were similar in proportion. Moreover, of the radiographic outcome measures, the subcategory Cobb angle was predominantly used across all intervention approaches. For quantitative quality of life measures, questionnaires investigating multiple domains such as SRS were primarily used as proxies of AIS treatment success across all intervention approaches. CONCLUSION This study identified that no articles employed qualitative measures of describing the psychosocial implications of AIS in defining treatment success. Although quantitative measures have merit in clinical diagnoses and management, there is increasing value in using qualitative methods such as thematic analysis in guiding clinicians to develop a biopsychosocial approach for patient care.

Abstract
Objectives: To study the mechanical sensitivity of different intervertebral disc and bone material parameters and ligaments under different force configurations and magnitudes in the scoliosis model. Methods: The finite element model of a 21-year-old female is built using computed tomography. Local range of motion testing and global bending simulations are performed for the model verification. Subsequently, Five force of different directions and configurations were applied to the finite element model applying the brace pad position. The material parameters of the model were related to different spinal flexibilities and included different material parameters of cortical bone, cancellous bone, nucleus and annulus. The virtual X-ray technique measured Cobb angle, thoracic Lordosis, and lumbar Kyphosis. Results: The difference in peak displacement is 9.28 mm, 19.99 mm, 27.06 mm, 43.99 mm, and 50.1 mm under five force configurations. The maximum Cobb angle difference due to material parameters are 4.7° and 6.2°, which are converted to thoracic and lumbar in-brace correction difference of 18% and 15.5%. The maximum difference in Kyphosis and Lordosis angle is 4.4° and 5.8°. The average thoracic and lumbar Cobb angle variation difference in intervertebral disc control group is larger than that in bone control group, while the average Kyphosis and Lordosis angle is inverse. The displacement distribution of models with or without ligaments is similar, with a peak displacement difference of 1.3 mm in C5. The peak stress occurred at the junction of the cortical bone and ribs. Conclusion: Spinal flexibility largely influences the treatment effect of the brace. The intervertebral disc has a greater effect on the Cobb angle, the bone has a greater effect on the Kyphosis and Lordosis angles, and the rotation is affected by both. Patient-specific material is the key to increasing accuracy in the personalized finite element model. This study provides a scientific basis for using controllable brace treatment for scoliosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe health-related quality of life in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis and controls. METHODS This cross-sectional study analysed data from 307 individuals with idiopathic scoliosis and 80 controls without scoliosis (mean age 15.5 ± 2.1 and 14.0 ± 2.2 years, respectively). Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed using EuroQol 5-dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire, and the scoliosis specific Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire (SRS-22r). HRQoL data in individuals with scoliosis were compared to controls, between treatment groups (untreated, ongoing brace, previously braced and surgically treated) and stratified according to curve size. RESULTS Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis had reduced HRQoL compared with controls, observed through lower SRS-22r subscore (respective means 4.16 and 4.68, p < 0.001) and lower EQ-5D index (respective means 0.92 and 0.95, p = 0.032). No differences in SRS-22r subscore or EQ-5D index were detected when comparing different scoliosis treatment groups. Within the SRS-22r function domain the surgically treated group scored 4.40, significantly lower compared to the untreated (4.65) and ongoing brace groups (4.68, p = 0.005). The surgically treated and untreated group were more affected by pain, compared to the ongoing brace group (p = 0.01) with the surgically treated group scoring lowest. Non-surgically treated scoliosis individuals with larger curves (> 30 degrees) had a lower SRS-22r subscore (4.08) compared to those with smaller curves (4.31, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis had a reduced HRQoL compared to healthy controls. Minor differences were detected when comparing between idiopathic scoliosis treatment groups. Non-surgically treated scoliosis patients with larger curves had a lower HRQoL shown by lower SRS-22r values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the lateral and horizontal deformity of the vertebral column which occurs idiopathically during adolescence. The aim of this study is to identify independent predictors of quality of life in AIS patients. METHODS In total, 31 adolescent patients diagnosed with AIS aged between 10 and 18 years old were included in the study. The scoliosis severity was determined for each patient according to the Cobb method, and their scoliosis perception using the Walter Reed Visual Assessment Scale, a pain assessment was conducted based on the Visual Analog Scale, quality of life using the Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire, and depression level according to the Children's Depression Scale. Multiple Linear Regression analysis was then performed in order to determine the independent determinants of health-related quality of life. FINDINGS According to the Linear Regression analysis results, children's depression scale, walter reed visual assessment scale, cobb, and anterior trunk rotation explained 52.7% of the variance as independent determinants of SRS-22. INTERPRETATION The study examined the determinants affecting the quality of life in AIS patients. The results of the study showed that scoliosis severity, perception of cosmetic deformity, degree of rotation, and depression level to be predictors of quality of life in AIS patients. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Scoliosis is the most frequent spine deformity in children. Epidemiological data are available in Western countries due to the systematic screening policies implemented at school. Unfortunately, in our country, there are neither national data nor screening policy for scoliosis. Are the epidemiological and diagnostic characteristics of scoliosis in our practice similar to the data in the literature? PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 106 medical records of patients under 19 years old between 2010 and 2019 at the 'Vivre Debout' Centre for structural scoliosis confirmed by spine X-ray with a Cobb angle ≥10°. The epidemiological and diagnostic characteristics were noted. The data were treated with Excel 2010. RESULTS The mean frequency of scoliosis was 10 cases/year. The male-to-female sex ratio was 1:1.3. The mean age at diagnosis was 11.2 ± 2.13 years. There was a family history of scoliosis in two cases (1.8%). Twenty-four girls (39.3%) out of 61 had had menarche at the time of diagnosis. The mean time from noticing deformity to consultation was 17.9 ± 21.9 months. Lateral deviation of the spine (n = 77; 72.6%), hump (n = 12; 11.3%) and pain (n = 3; 2.8%) were the main complaints for consultation. In 14 cases (13.2%), the discovery was fortuitous during a medical examination for another complaint. The curvature was single in 88 cases (83%) and double in 18 (17%). The convexity was right in 69 cases (65.1%) and left in 37 (34.9%). Curvatures were thoracic (n = 57; 53.8%), lumbar (n = 10; 9.4%) and thoracolumbar (n = 39; 36.8%). The average Cobb angle was 35.2° ±10.71° (range: 11°-90°). Curvatures were moderate (20°-40°) in 49 cases (46.2) and severe (>40°) in 18 (17%). The aetiologies were predominated by idiopathic causes (n = 79; 74.5%), followed by congenital (n = 16; 15.1%) and neuromuscular (n = 11; 10.4%) causes. CONCLUSION Scoliosis is uncommon in our practice. It is characterised by single curvature. The predominance of moderate and severe curvatures was due to delayed consultation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiographic methods to assess skeletal maturity (SM) have a key role in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) management, allowing to predict risk of spinal curve progression. Cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) has been recently introduced as an alternative tool to assess skeletal maturity; however, its clinical role is still debated. OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to investigate the reliability of CVM in the SM assessment of growing subjects, comparing it to hand wrist maturation (HVM). METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched from inception until 31st December 2020 to identify observational studies presenting: growing subjects as participants; CVM methods as intervention; HVM methods as comparator; reliability for SM assessment as outcome. A 10-item quality tool has been used to assess study quality. RESULTS Out of 205 papers, 12 papers were included in the data synthesis. We classified 10 studies (83.3%) as medium-quality studies and 2 studies (16.7%) as high-quality studies. Eight studies reported a significant correlation between CVM Baccetti and different HWM methods. CONCLUSION Taken together, these findings suggested that CVM might be considered as reliable SM assessment method compared to HWM in growing subjects. However, further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) affects patients' quality of life, yet there have been few reports of its morphology and epidemiological study in the southeast region of China. The aim of this study is to access the curve characteristics, prevalence, and factors associated with IS in Chaozhou city. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed in 2018, in which scoliosis screening was conducted among 5497 primary school students in Chaozhou city. Then, a case-control study based on the screening involving 2547 children was followed for the exploration of the associated factors. The questionnaires covering demographic characteristics, postural habits, cognition and self-sensation of scoliosis, and physical conditions were addressed for the investigation. ORs with 95%CIs were calculated based on logistic regression analysis to evaluate the factors associated with scoliosis. RESULTS The prevalence of IS among primary school students was 6.15% in Chaozhou city, with 4.04% for males and 8.71% for females. The average Cobb angle was 15° (range 8 to 37°). Multiple logistic regression analysis suggested that female (OR=2.45), BMI (OR=0.67), having myopia (OR=1.49), self-sensation of scoliosis with symptoms (OR=5.52), insufficient sleep time (OR=2.65, 3.33), and less exercise time (OR=7.09, 7.29) were significantly associated with IS. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of IS among primary school students in Chaozhou was at an average level, and it was significantly higher in females than in males. Lower body mass, having myopia, insufficient sleep time, and lower physical activity were associated with IS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aesthetics is recognized as a main outcome in idiopathic scoliosis (IS) treatment, but to date, there is no criterion standard for physicians' evaluation. Trunk Aesthetic Clinical Evaluation (TRACE) is a simple 12-point ordinal scale to quantify symmetry as a proxy of aesthetics. TRACE is already diffused worldwide and has been used in clinical research. OBJECTIVE We aimed to validate TRACE and improve it with Rasch analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study involved an observational Rasch analysis validation of an evaluation tool in outpatient rehabilitation centres. From a clinical database, we randomly selected patients who had IS, were age 10 to 18, had brace prescription at first evaluation, and had at least 2 consultations. Rasch analysis (partial credit model) was used. Differential item functioning (DIF) was assessed for age, sex, disease severity, bracing and treatment. The median was chosen to dichotomize disease severity and bracing. We removed 64 outlier participants (4%). RESULTS We included 1553 participants (1334 females; mean [SD] age 13 [1.7] years old). TRACE items showed ordered thresholds and proper fit to the Rasch model. The score-to-measure conversion table showed proper length (range -4.55 to 4.79 logit) with a mean (SE) measure of -0.52 (0.04) logit. The principal component analysis supported the TRACE unidimensionality. The TRACE was free from DIF for age, sex and bracing. CONCLUSIONS The TRACE ordinal scale has been converted into a Rasch-consistent, interval-level measure of trunk aesthetics in IS patients and can be used to compare different populations. Its main flaw is low reliability, likely because of the small number of items. TRACE can be used as an outcome measure and in everyday clinical evaluation of IS, even if new developments of the scale are advised.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional. OBJECTIVES To determine the validity and reliability of culturally adapted Persian version of the Brace Questionnaire (P-BrQ). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA The BrQ has proved to be a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating the quality of life of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis and has been translated to different languages. But, lack of a Persian translated version makes its use impractical in the Persian speaking scoliotic patients. METHODS Forward and backward translation of P-BrQ was conducted according to the International Quality of Life Assessment guidelines. The final version of the P-BrQ was administered to 51 adolescents (1 boy and 50 girls) with idiopathic scoliosis. The mean age of the participants was 13.88 ± 2.14 years. The questionnaire's internal consistency was determined using Cronbach's alpha. A subgroup of 38 participants were randomly selected to complete the BrQ for a second time one week later. The test-retest reliability was then analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient, while the concurrent validity was assessed by comparing the BrQ with the Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire. RESULTS The total Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the P-BrQ was 0.96, and the overall intraclass correlation coefficient of the questionnaire was also 0.96. The intraclass correlation coefficients for the corresponding domains were as follows: general health perception, 0.96; physical functioning, 0.96; emotional functioning, 0.98; self-esteem, 0.80; vitality, 0.97; school activity, 0.98; pain, 0.97; and social functioning, 0.98. CONCLUSIONS The culturally adapted Persian version of the BrQ can be used to assess the quality of life of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis who wear a brace. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE II.

Abstract
PURPOSE We analysed socio-economic- and health-related quality of life (primary outcome) and radiological outcome (secondary outcome) 5 years after full time rigid bracing (FTRB) plus physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS We included 41 patients (38 female and 3 male) treated with FTRB (Chênau brace) and PSSE (Schroth) between 2001 and 2010. The study protocol included a clinical and radiological examination, the completion of the SRS-24 questionnaire and acquisition of data on socio-economic factors (educational and employment status) and physical activity. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data; differences between patients with mild (< 30°) and severe curves (30°-50°) regarding hrQoL outcomes were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U Test. RESULTS Primary outcomes showed full employment (higher education, 39%, and full-time work, 61%) and the majority of the patients (79.9%) performing moderate sports two to four times per week. The SRS-24 questionnaire produced a total mean score (MS) of 4.0 (79.9%). Patients with mild curves had a significantly better total score (MS 4.1 vs. MS 3.8, p = 0.020) and were more satisfied with the treatment (MS 4.3 vs MS 3.9, p = 0.020). As to the secondary outcomes, from start of bracing to follow-up (a mean of 6.7 years after brace weaning), the average Cobb angle changed from 28.6° to 25.6° (range 4°-48°); in 51.2% the curve angles could be maintained after weaning. CONCLUSIONS Compared with the literature, our results showed similar curve development and hrQoL (pain, self-image and function) and better results regarding satisfaction with treatment. In comparison with the average population, there were no disadvantages as to occupation, education and sports. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.
