Abstract
OBJECTIVE This retrospective study compared the thickness and degree of resorption of the mandibular cortex in patients with head and neck cancer (AG), patients with cancer at sites other than the head and neck (BG), and patients with no cancer (CG) to describe and compare the changes in the mandible after antineoplastic therapy and their possible clinical implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 287 panoramic radiographs were examined. The following radiomorphometric indices were analyzed: mental index (MI), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), and mandibular cortical index (MCI). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Kruskal‒Wallis test, with p < 0.05 considered significant, were performed. RESULTS Males predominated in the AG (83%), while females predominated in the BG and CG (78.6 and 62%, respectively). In the AG, tongue carcinoma (22.1%) was prevalent, while in the BG, breast carcinoma was predominant (53.8%). All parameters measured in the AG and BG patients were significantly lower than those in the CG patients: MI (p < 0.001), right PMIc/a (p < 0.001), left PMIc/a (p < 0.001), right PMIc/b (p = 0.004), left PMIc/b (p < 0.001), and MCI (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Radiomorphometric indices MI, PMI, and MCI were significantly lower in panoramic radiographs of patients with head and neck cancer and patients with cancer in other regions of the body than in those of nononcological patients.

Abstract
Head and neck cancer (HNC) represents a significant global health challenge, with over 660,000 annual diagnoses and a mortality rate exceeding 49 %, making it the seventh most common cancer worldwide. Current standard treatments, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, often result in significant side effects, underscoring the need for innovative and personalized therapeutic approaches. In recent years, botulinum toxin (BoNT) has emerged as a transformative adjunctive therapy in HNC management. Initially recognized for its neuromuscular blocking properties, BoNT has expanded its applications to alleviate complications such as sialorrhea, gustatory sweating, and neuropathic pain associated with HNC treatment. Beyond symptomatic relief, emerging evidence suggests that BoNT may influence tumor biology by modulating the tumor microenvironment, disrupting nerve-cancer interactions, and altering key molecular pathways to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. This article explores BoNT's achievements and therapeutic potential in treating HNC, examining its molecular mechanisms, clinical efficacy, and implications for future research. By elucidating BoNT's role in symptom management and its potential as an anti-tumor agent, this review highlights a promising avenue for advancing personalized medicine and improving outcomes for HNC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE SCEL serves as a precursor protein for the cornified envelope (CE), and its abnormal expression has been identified in various malignancies. Despite this, the functional role and detailed mechanisms of SCEL in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remain to be clarified. METHODS mRNA and protein expression of SCEL in OSCC cell lines and patient tissues were examined by qRT-PCR and IHC. In vitro and in vivo experiments assessed SCEL's influence on proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle, ROS production, migration, and invasion. Western blotting was used to analyze SCEL's effect on various signaling pathways, and a dual-luciferase reporter assay identified the miRNA that targets SCEL. RESULTS SCEL is downregulated in OSCC, which correlates with reduced tumor cell differentiation and lymph node metastasis. SCEL inhibits OSCC proliferation, induces cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and ROS production. SCEL suppresses the TGF-β/Smad pathway, inhibiting migration and invasion. SCEL also triggers MET and downregulates VEGFC, reducing lymph node metastasis probability. miR-5696 inhibitor effectively inhibits OSCC proliferation and invasion by targeting SCEL. CONCLUSION SCEL acts as a tumor suppressor in OSCC, influencing its progression and potential metastasis. Loss of SCEL facilitates OSCC progression by activating TGF-β/Smad signaling. Upregulating SCEL and silencing miR-5696 hold therapeutic promise for OSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Head and neck cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy may experience a notable and frequently sudden decline in their oral health. These alterations include oral mucositis that develops during and shortly after treatment, candida infections, trouble speaking, difficulty eating, bleeding gums, and tissue fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral care intervention protocol (OCIP) on oral health and oral complications. The experimental group received a structured oral care protocol, and the control group received oral care as per the standard of care of the study setting. These patients were observed every week for up to 6 weeks until the completion of radiation therapy/chemoradiation. An experimental design using a randomized controlled trial was adopted for the study. After providing informed consent, the data were collected from 80 head and neck cancer patients. RESULTS The maximum number of patients, i.e., 42.5% in the experimental group and 32.5% in the control group, were diagnosed with tongue cancer. Most of the participants, i.e., 57.5% in the experimental group and 67.5% in the control group, received chemoradiation as the treatment plan. Among all the oral complications, the median days to develop mucositis (p =.015), swallowing difficulty (p =.009), and chewing difficulty (p =.032) were significantly different from those of the control, indicating that the intervention was effective. As treatment progressed over the weeks, the severity of the oral problems increased in both groups (p =.001). Compared with routine care, oral care intervention improved oral health scores among cancer patients receiving head and neck radiation therapy/chemoradiation [F (401.982), p =.001]. CONCLUSION These data suggest that the OCIP is clinically helpful in maintaining overall oral health among cancer patients receiving head and neck radiation/chemoradiation. The OCIP effectively delays the incidence of oral complications arising from head and neck radiation therapy/chemotherapy but does not prevent them. The findings of this study can also contribute to providing evidence for the use of an oral care kit, including all evidence-based interventions for patients receiving head and neck radiation/chemoradiation.

Abstract
Background: Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy has shown potential in managing oral mucositis (OM), a frequent and painful side effect of radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients. Although PBM is increasingly used in clinical settings, the optimal delivery method-transcutaneous or intraoral-remains undetermined. Methods: This prospective, single-center, randomized pilot study (clinicaltrials.gov NCT06458517) aims to compare the efficacy of transcutaneous versus intraoral PBM in preventing and managing OM in patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy for cancers of the oral cavity or oropharynx. Participants will be randomized into two groups: one receiving intraoral PBM with the CareMin650™ device, and the other receiving transcutaneous PBM with the ATP38® device. Results: Primary and secondary outcomes will include the incidence and severity of OM, treatment interruptions, patient-reported pain levels, and quality of life, assessed using validated tools. Conclusions: This study will provide comparative data on two PBM modalities, contributing to the development of standardized PBM protocols in supportive oncology care and informing future multicenter trials aimed at improving patient outcomes during radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oral health and its impact on general well-being is acutely evident with a cancer diagnosis. Most cancer treatments will affect the oral environment, with poor oral health having the potential to negatively impact cancer treatment outcomes. METHODS This retrospective study included 1500 patients referred for dental examination prior to cancer therapy at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Australia, between January 2017 and August 2019. Demographic characteristics, cancer diagnosis, and baseline oral health information were recorded. RESULTS Patients were referred from the head and neck tumour stream (56%), haematology (27.7%), breast and genitourinary (6.1%), and others (9.7%). Of the patients who required dental treatment 49% required a dental extraction prior to their cancer treatment to optimise oral health. Head and neck cancer patients presented with poorer oral hygiene and required more dental extractions than other patient groups (χ2 = 17.59, p = 0.00003). CONCLUSIONS Baseline oral health for cancer patients was below expected compared with the Australian average. Dental treatment was necessary for more than half of patients to reduce infection risk and improve function and quality of life during and following cancer treatment, highlighting the essential role of oral health clinicians in the multidisciplinary team.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Dental caries is believed to be one of the most frequent dental long-term adverse effects of anticancer therapy. It may occur due to numerous chemotherapy-dependent oral symptoms or due to the possible neglection of oral care because of parental involvement in the monitoring of other long-term effects of the therapy. This study aimed to determine the incidence of dental caries and the impact of other risk factors in cancer survivors and age-matched controls. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 40 cancer survivors and 80 peers divided into three age groups. Indices such as dmft/s, DMFT/S, ft/s, FT/S, Plaque Index (PI), and Gingival Index (GI) were calculated to compare the study participants. The sum of dmft and DMFT was used to assess the possible impact of socioeconomic, oral hygiene, and dietary factors. RESULTS Caries frequency was found to be lower in cancer survivors (92.50%) than in controls (97.50%). No statistically significant differences were found between the study groups within all the caries indices examined. Strong positive correlations with PI and cariogenic diet in the youngest survivors and with PI in middle-aged survivors were observed. Strong negative correlations in middle-aged children were noticed in terms of father's education in survivors and mother's education in controls. CONCLUSIONS The study findings suggest that there is no relationship between chemotherapy and dental caries in long-term cancer survivors. Careful dental care still remains a major contributor to maintaining oral health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In Pakistan, women undergoing chemotherapy are usually unaware of the potential impact of the treatment on their oral health related quality of life. This study aims to assess the impact of chemotherapy on oral health related quality of life. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted among 160 breast cancer (BC) patients on chemotherapy coming to Aga Khan Hospital and Jinnah Postgraduate medical center. Data collection was performed using a validated questionnaire for sociodemographic variables, types and frequency of oral hygiene measures, oral mucositis (OM) and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) and oral examination was performed. Data was analyzed using simple linear regression method. RESULTS Among these females, 119 were married, with a mean age of 47.64 ± 10.89 years. OM was present in 88, 25 used miswak/dentonic, 33 did not receive care by dentists/nurses, 15 reported moderate to severe gingival inflammation, and 85 were at stage 3 BC. OHRQoL was significantly associated with OM, women's age, marital status, gingival status, and platelet count. CONCLUSION This multi-center cross-sectional study highlights poor OHRQoL among BC patients undergoing chemotherapy. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive oral health care for these patients to improve their quality of life and treatment outcomes. Word Count: 201.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Comprehensive care is fundamental to cancer survivors enduring long-term side-effects of cancer treatment including nutrition impact symptoms and critical weight loss (CWL). The aim of our study was to address weight loss (WL), nutritional aspects, and quality of life (QoL) in head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors. STUDY DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study of HNC patients treated at the Sapienza University-Hospital, 2018-2022. We administered a modified version of the EORTC-QLQ-H&N35, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for taste disorders, and the Fox Questionnaire for dry mouth. WL was recorded at T0 (before cancer treatment), T1 (right after treatment), and (at follow-up) T2. RESULTS All patients (n = 63; 61.9% males) had a median WL of 16.7% (range: 1.4%-44.2%) at T1 and a median of 9.8% (range: 1.8%-45.6%) at T2. Patients with dysgeusia, poor dentition, and those who underwent major orofacial surgery had the highest WL (P < .05). Patients who received multiple treatment regimens had a higher WL compared to those receiving fewer regimens (P < .05). Patients with nutritional problems (71.4%) had a lower QoL throughout (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS CWL is an important side effect of HNC treatment and may particularly affect survivors with xerostomia/dysgeusia, poor dentition, and those receiving multiple treatment regimens.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect of cancer treatment, causing significant pain and discomfort. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Photobiomodulation in treating mucositis induced by chemoradiotherapy in cancer patients. METHODS This randomized, single-blind clinical trial involved 36 patients with grade 3-4 oral mucositis. The test group (n = 18) received diode portable laser therapy (810 nm wavelength, 200 mW power, 6 J/cm2 energy density) for 4 days. The control group (n = 18) used a Diphenhydramine + Almgs mouthwash (50-50% mixture, 15 ml, every 6 h for 4 days). Lesions were assessed before treatment, one week after, and again at one month. RESULTS Pain scores in the laser group decreased significantly over time (P < 0.05). Patients in the laser group reported better quality of life and reduced oral discomfort compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The severity of mucositis significantly decreased in the laser group within the first week (P < 0.05), though no significant difference was observed at one month (P = 0.158). CONCLUSION The study demonstrates that Photobiomodulation is a more effective and efficient method for reducing pain, tingling, and improving quality of life in both the short and long term. It also reduces the severity of oral mucositis in the short term for patients with head and neck cancer undergoing chemoradiotherapy.

Abstract
This review highlights the key molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to aging, such as DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, telomere shortening, protein dysfunction, and defective autophagy. These biological mechanisms are involved in various oral health conditions prevalent in the elderly, including periodontal disease, oral cancer, xerostomia, dental caries, and temporomandibular joint disorders. Exosomes generated by mesenchymal stem cells possess substantial therapeutic potential. These exosomes are nanosized extracellular vesicles derived from cells and are involved in essential intercellular communication and tissue homeostasis. The exosome-based therapies proved superior to traditional cell-based approaches, due to lower immunogenicity, ease of storage, and avoidance of complications associated with cell transplantation. Furthermore, the diagnostic potential of exosomes as non-invasive biomarkers for aging processes and age-related oral diseases offers insights into disease diagnosis, staging, and monitoring. Among the challenges and future perspectives of translating exosome research from preclinical studies to clinical applications is the need for standardized procedures to fully harness the therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities of exosomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fear of recurrence (FoR) is a prevalent and difficult experience among cancer patients. Most research has focused on FoR among breast cancer patients, with less attention paid to characterizing levels and correlates of FoR among oral and oropharyngeal cancer survivors. The purpose was to characterize FoR with a measure assessing both global fears and the nature of specific worries as well as evaluate the role of sociodemographic and clinical factors, survivorship care transition practices, lifestyle factors, and depressive symptoms in FoR. METHODS Three hundred eighty-nine oral and oropharyngeal survivors recruited from two cancer registries completed a survey assessing demographics, cancer treatment, symptoms, alcohol and tobacco use, survivorship care practices, depression, and FoR. RESULTS Forty percent reported elevated global FoR, with similar percentages for death (46%) and health worries (40.3%). Younger, female survivors and survivors experiencing more physical and depressive symptoms reported more global fears and specific fears about the impact of recurrence on roles, health, and identity, and fears about death. Depression accounted for a large percent of the variance. Lower income was associated with more role and identity/sexuality worries, and financial hardship was associated with more role worries. CONCLUSIONS FoR is a relatively common experience for oral and oropharyngeal cancer survivors. Many of its correlates are modifiable factors that could be addressed with multifocal, tailored survivorship care interventions. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Assessing and addressing depressive symptoms, financial concerns, expected physical symptoms in the first several years of survivorship may impact FoR among oral and oropharyngeal cancer survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) and oral mucositis (OM) are common adverse events during cancer chemotherapy and can significantly decrease patients' quality of life and chemotherapy adaptation, however, prevention strategies of these complications yet to be established. METHODS Patients with stages I-III breast cancer, who had surgery and needed pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD)-based adjuvant chemotherapy were screened, recruited and randomly assigned to receive either probiotics or placebo (three capsules, twice/day) treatment during the course of chemotherapy from November 2019 to August 2020. The incidence and severity of PLD related HFS and OM, and patients' quality of life were assessed. Their plasma biomarkers, metabolites and fecal microbiota compositions were measured. And the results were further verified in animal experiments. RESULTS Probiotics supplement during PLD treatment significantly decreased the incidence and the severity of HFS and OM ( P < 0.001), improved patients' life quality ( P < 0.001), increased the relative abundance of intestinal Enterococcus ( P = 0.025) and mitigated the changes of seven plasma metabolites. Among these metabolites, the changes of p-Mentha-1,8-dien-7-ol (MDO) ( B = - 0.441, P = 0.02) and L-arginine ( B = - 0.586, P = 0.002) were negatively correlated with the occurrence of severe HFS and OM. MDO can partly reproduce the preventive effects of probiotics on PLD-related skin cell proliferating inhibition, DNA damage, and local inflammation in rats. CONCLUSION Probiotics supplement during PLD-based chemotherapy prevents the incidence and severity of HFS and OM, which may be associated with modulating plasma metabolites including the MDO.

Abstract
PURPOSE In Denmark, the prevalence of head and neck cancer is approximately 17.000, and the incidence is increasing. The disease and treatment of this condition may lead to severe physical, psychological, and social consequences. However, the literature indicates a lack of rehabilitation services and insufficient professional resources in the municipal setting resulting in unmet rehabilitation needs. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of the challenges and rehabilitation needs experienced by citizens treated for head and neck cancer. METHODS A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was employed. Paul Ricoeur's interpretation theory was used to analyze the data. FINDINGS Citizens treated for head and neck cancer experience the need for targeted assistance to manage the consequences following treatment for head and neck cancer and the need for adequate information and specialized professional competencies in municipal rehabilitation. The findings highlight a dual need: support from healthcare professionals and opportunities for patients to connect with others who have undergone treatment for head and neck cancer, as part of municipal rehabilitation. CONCLUSION The study contributes to an understanding of the citizen perspective on rehabilitation needs and informs and enhances knowledge about municipal rehabilitation interventions for citizens treated for head and neck cancer. However, the findings also indicate the complexity of the referral process, highlighting the need for further research on barriers and facilitators to referral and access to municipal rehabilitation.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to compare the effectiveness of 2 artificial saliva substitutes (Biotène vs HydraSmile) in the symptomatic management of radiation-induced xerostomia. Study Design Randomized double-blind cross-over study. Setting Single tertiary care academic institution. Methods Included adult patients≥ 6 months postradiotherapy (50-70 gy) for squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, or larynx. The primary endpoint was change in overall subjective xerostomia score from baseline, through use of HydraSmile versus Biotène. Scores were derived from a 100-point visual analog scale, with higher scores indicating better symptomatic control. Analysis of covariance model was used to regress the difference in after-treatment measurement between HydraSmile and Biotène, with respect to baseline differences. Results A total of 91 participants were included (mean age 63.0 years [SD 9.7]; 85.7% male; 97.8% White). Change in overall xerostomia score with respect to baseline was not significantly different between HydraSmile and Biotène (mean difference 1.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] -2.35 to 4.81). Compared to water alone, both HydraSmile (mean difference 7.45, 95% CI 3.61-11.29) and Biotène (mean difference 7.24, 95% CI 3.06-11.43) significantly improved overall xerostomia score. Forty (44%) patients reported a preference for Biotène, 46 (50.5%) preferred HydraSmile, and 5 (5.5%) had no preference. Patients who preferred Biotène did not significantly benefit from HydraSmile, whereas those who preferred HydraSmile did not significantly benefit from Biotène. Conclusion Biotène and HydraSmile significantly improved oral dryness among patients with radiation-induced xerostomia. While neither product demonstrated treatment superiority, individual product preference was predictive of greatest treatment benefit.

Abstract
Objectives The multidimensional concept of quality of life (QoL) has become vital in cancer care, and research and is crucial for epidemiological investigations. The primary objective of the research was to translate and culturally adapt the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire - Oral Health15 (EORTC QLQ OH15) questionnaire into Hindi, assessing its reliability and validity for implementation among cancer patients of Aligarh. Materials and Methods This study was carried out from June 2019 to May 2021. Permissions were obtained from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ) group for cross-cultural adaptation and translation of the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Oral Health15 (QLQ-OH15) and ethical clearance was secured from the Institutional Ethical Review Board at Aligarh Muslim University. Informed consent was provided by participating patients. The translation and cultural adaptation of the QLQ-OH15 followed an eight-phase procedure in compliance with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire translation manual, ensuring consistency. Psychometric properties were evaluated using the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences 20, assessing content validity, convergent and discriminant validity, criterion validity, construct validity, reliability and test-retest reproducibility. Results The content validity ratio exceeded 0.75, with Cronbach's alpha values above 0.70 for each scale, confirming reliability. Factor analysis identified five factors: 'Pain and discomfort,' 'Information,' 'Soreness,' 'Denture' and 'Xerostomia.' Every item in every scale had its item convergent validity validated; all values were over 0.4 and there were no scaling mistakes observed. All of the items' correlation coefficients for the other scales were lower than their scales, indicating discriminant validity. There were statistically significant associations between Hindi EORTC QLQ-OH15 scores and three proxy measures: Perceived oral health (P = 0.000), perceived satisfaction with the mouth (P = 0.000) and perceived dental treatment need (P = 0.001). Conclusion The Hindi version of the QLQ-OH15 is a valid and reliable tool for assessing oral health-related quality of life in Indian cancer patients. This adaptation facilitates better symptom management and improved QoL in this population, emphasising the importance of oral health in comprehensive cancer care.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a frequent complication of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents; its incidence largely varies, depending on type, dose, agent and preexisting risk factors. Oral-and-perioral-CIPN (OCIPN) is underreported. Neurotoxic agents can cause jaw pain or numbness. This review aims to present available data on OCIPN RECENT FINDINGS: A narrative literature review, following SANRA guidelines was conducted. PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched until September 2023. Articles referring to neuropathy or neuropathic pain due to head and neck cancer, head and neck radiotherapy, oropharyngeal mucositis, infection or post-surgical pain were excluded. Platinum-based chemotherapeutics, taxanes, vinca alkaloids, immunomodulatory and alkylating agents can cause OCIPN. Platinum-based chemotherapeutics can cause orofacial cold sensitivity, orofacial and jaw pain, oral cavity tingling and teeth hypersensitivity. Taxanes may induce oral cavity and tongue numbness and tingling as well as hot hypersensitivity. Vinca alkaloids may cause jaw, teeth and lips pain and oral mucosa hyperalgesia. Immunomodulatory drugs can cause lips, tongue and perioral numbness, while alkylating agents induce tongue and lips tingling and teeth cold-hypersensitivity. Chemotherapy may cause OCIPN due to changes in cellular structure and function, like alterations in membrane receptors and neurotransmission. OCIPN should be documented and physicians, dentists and health care providers should be alerted.

Abstract
Xerostomia, generally addressed as dry mouth, poses significant challenges to patients' quality of life, particularly in the context of cancer treatment. Although various medications and interventions, including salivary substitutes and stimulants, muscarinic agonists, antineoplastic detoxifying agents, anti-inflammatory agents, superoxide dismutase mimetics, mesenchymal stem cells, submandibular gland transfer, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, dose fractionation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, photobiomodulation, acupuncture, and nutritional interventions, have been proposed for this condition, no approved or definite treatments are currently available. Moreover, the evidence supporting the efficacy of proposed interventions remains limited and subject to controversy in terms of safety, efficacy, and optimal protocol. This review provides a comprehensive insight into cancer treatment-related xerostomia, underlying its pathophysiology, etiology, clinical manifestation, and therapeutic options, providing a clinical guide for clinicians to adopt a patient-tailored approach to cancer treatment-related xerostomia and offering vision on current ongoing and future studies in the field.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The association between lower socioeconomic status and a higher risk of dental caries is well established, but the independent association between general health status and dental caries on a population level is less investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the association between self-rated general health and caries experience in an adult Norwegian population and to assess if the associations were modified by age and sex. METHODS Data were collected as part of the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4) conducted 2017-2019 and a randomly selected subsample (20%) were invited for the HUNT4 Oral Health Study. This cross-sectional study included 4,880 dentate participants aged 19-94 years (response rate 67%). Participants underwent clinical and radiographic oral examinations and caries experience was measured by numbers of decayed (DT), missing (MT), and filled teeth (FT), DMFT index. The DT component consisted of primary and secondary caries in dentine, cavitated root caries, and remaining roots. Questionnaires were used to assess self-rated general health and socioeconomic position, denoted by education, household income, and employment status. Associations between self-rated health and caries experience (DMFT) and components (DT, MT, and FT) were assessed using negative binomial regression models. Ratios of means (RMs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations were estimated, adjusting for socioeconomic position. RESULTS Individuals with poor self-rated general health had a 29% higher mean number of MT (RM: 1.29 [95% CI: 1.13-1.46]), a 22% higher mean number of DT (RM: 1.22 [95% CI: 1.07-1.39]), and a 7% higher mean number of DMFT (RM: 1.07 [95% CI: 1.04-1.11]) than individuals reporting very good health. Age-stratified analyses presented a more pronounced association between self-rated health and caries experience for individuals below the age of 55 years than for those 55 years or older. Similarly, the association was more evident in women, with significantly higher mean values for DMFT, MT, and FT among women reporting poor health. CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated an independent association between poor self-rated health and a higher burden of caries experience, adjusted for education, income, and employment status. The association was stronger in women and individuals below the age of 55 years. These findings add new evidence in understanding caries inequalities through self-rated health.

Abstract
Radiation injuries, particularly those resulting from therapeutic or accidental exposure, present complex challenges for medical management. These injuries can manifest localized skin damage or extend to deeper tissues, presenting as various clinical entities that require treatment strategies, ranging from conservative management to complex surgical interventions. Radiation treatment constitutes a fundamental component of neoplastic management, with nearly two out of three oncological instances undergoing it as an element of their therapeutic strategy. The therapeutic approach to radiation injury consists of expanding prophylactic measures while maintaining the efficacy of treatment, such as conservative treatment or local debridement followed by reconstruction. The armamentarium of reconstructive methods available for plastic surgeons, from secondary healing to free tissue transfer, can be successfully applied to radiation injuries. However, the unique pathophysiological changes induced by radiation necessitate a careful and specialized approach for their application, considering the altered tissue characteristics and healing dynamics. The therapeutic strategy is guided by both the severity and progression of the injury, with the primary aim of restoring functionality and aesthetic aspects while simultaneously minimizing the risk of complications. This paper explores the various conditions encompassed by the term "radiation injury," reviews both non-surgical and surgical therapeutic strategies for managing these injuries, and highlights the unique challenges associated with treating irradiated tissues within specific oncological contexts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cancer patients often have compromised oral health, making them vulnerable to severe dental caries and restoration failures. Due to the nature of cervical or anterior caries in cancer patients, the use of adequate restorative materials is important. However, public dental insurance coverage for composite treatments varies among countries and only glass ionomer cements (GICs) are covered in all age groups in South Korea. This study examined the cost-effectiveness of expanding national health insurance coverage to include resin composite (RC) restorations as compared with GIC in cancer patients. METHODS Data from cancer patients who received direct restoration using GIC were identified from the National Health Screening Cohort. The relative effect of RC compared to GIC was determined through a meta-analysis, which was then utilized in calculating corresponding transition probabilities within a multi-state model. A Markov-chain Monte Carlo microsimulation was performed to estimate useful life-years and total treatment costs at the tooth level. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of RC versus GIC was calculated, considering scenarios with and without expanded national health insurance coverage. The robustness of the results was confirmed through various sensitivity analyses. RESULTS Between the two materials, RC resulted in a 0.4-year longer useful life. From a limited societal perspective, it cost $9.6 less with expanded coverage but $24.3 more without expansion, resulting in an ICER of -$25.2 and $63.9 per tooth-year, respectively. From a patient's perspective, the ICER values were -$72.7 versus $138.8 per tooth-year, respectively, translating into $200 more in savings with the expansion. Various sensitivity analyses consistently demonstrated a smaller ICER when insurance coverage was expanded. CONCLUSIONS The expansion of national health insurance coverage to include RC restorations for cancer patients appears to be clearly cost-effective. This emphasizes the need for further policy considerations to ensure access to dental care for cancer patients. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Timely management of dental caries is crucial for cancer patients, as untreated caries can escalate into severe oral conditions, negatively impacting treatment outcomes and increasing care costs. Expanding a national health insurance coverage for cancer patients in the treatment of early dental lesions is necessary to prevent advanced dental diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Malnutrition is common among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and associated with poorer outcomes. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are often prescribed, with concerns raised about their cariogenicity. This study examined ONS use and caries experience in patients with HNC 12 months post-diagnosis. METHODS Fifty-four patients with HNC referred for pre-radiotherapy dental assessment were recruited. Data collected included: age, gender, residential postcode, smoking, alcohol use, HNC characteristics, dental history, oral hygiene habits, dietary advice and ONS use. Data was collected at diagnosis, during radiotherapy and 6 weeks, three, six- and 12-months post-treatment completion. RESULTS Fifty-one subjects completed the study. 76.5% of the participants used ONS for an average of 13.8 weeks. Caries developed in 22.9% of ONS users and 11.1% of non-users (p = 0.6585). The mean overall duration of ONS use was 18.7 weeks for the caries group and 8.5 weeks for the caries-free group (p = 0.1507). Lack of collaboration and disconnection was noted between dietary advice given by dieticians and dentists. CONCLUSIONS ONS use is common among patients with HNC. Larger studies are needed to establish the reasons for caries development and impacts of ONS use on oral health. Importance of multidisciplinary management of malnutrition is highlighted.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to review the current body of literature on underexplored areas of photobiomodulation (PBM) for preventing and/or treating oral adverse events. Background: Recent studies suggest that PBM may offer potential benefits in managing cancer-related toxicities other than oral mucositis. Nevertheless, further research to establish conclusive evidence is still missing. Methods: A panel of specialists conducted a narrative review to evaluate the evidence on PBM therapy for oral mucositis, xerostomia, dysgeusia, dysphagia, and trismus/fibrosis. Each topic was reviewed by two specialists who discussed treatment rationale, summarized current evidence, evaluated risk/benefit ratio, and identified future research directions. Results: The current evidence suggests promising outcomes in nonroutine uses of PBM for xerostomia, dysgeusia, odynophagia, oral mucositis (extraoral PBM and the pediatric population), and trismus/fibrosis. However, the primary studies are often small and may have biases that require further evaluation, particularly regarding treatment safety. Conclusion: Despite the overall positive impression of PBM therapy for oral adverse events of cancer treatment, robust evidence from large multicentered studies is necessary to support its widespread clinical use.

Abstract
Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating oral complication in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, resulting in diminished quality of life and potential treatment disruptions. Oral microbiota has long been recognized as a contributing factor in the initiation and progression of radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM). Numerous studies have indicated that the radiation-induced oral microbial dysbiosis promotes the occurrence and severity of oral mucositis. Therefore, approaches that modulate oral microbial ecology are promising for the management of RIOM. Probiotics as a relatively predicable and safe measure that modulates microecology have garnered significant interest. In this review, we discussed the correlation between RIOM and oral microbiota, with a particular focus on the efficacy of probiotics in the control of RIOM, in order to provide novel paradigm for the management of this disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the self-reported oral health and oral health-related quality of life of patients diagnosed with hemato-oncological disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data was collected through a digital questionnaire in collaboration with the Dutch patient organization Hematon. The questionnaires EORTC-QLQ-C30, EORTC-QLQ-OH15, shortened Xerostomia Inventory (XI), and the OHIP-14 were used. RESULTS Seven hundred five patients were included (52.5% female, mean age 63.2 ± 10.1). The majority was diagnosed more than 2 years ago (86%) and had received treatment (81%) for their disease. Lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma were the most frequent malignancies. Chemotherapy alone, chemotherapy in combination with targeted therapy or immunotherapy, and myeloablative chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation were the most common treatment modalities. The XI identified that 40.5% met the criteria for xerostomia. Other complaints included mouth soreness and sensitivity, gingival pain and bleeding, problems with teeth or with an ill-fitting denture. Despite reporting oral complaints, most patients experienced a rather good OH-QoL. A high xerostomia score led to a significantly lower OH-QoL. Female gender, history of stem cell transplantation, radiation to head and neck, and multiple daily medication use were significant predictors of xerostomia. CONCLUSION Patients with hematologic malignancies frequently reported a dry mouth and other oral complaints including mouth soreness and sensitivity, gingival pain and bleeding, and problems with teeth. Despite these oral complaints, most patients experienced a relatively good OH-QoL. Future longitudinal studies are needed, and health professionals should have an active role in providing oral supportive care based on patients' individual needs.

Abstract
Oral cancer (OC) presents a significant global health burden with rising incidence rates. Despite advancements in diagnosis and treatments, the survival rate for OC patients, particularly those with advanced or recurrent disease, remains low at approximately 20%. This poor prognosis is often due to a small population of cancer stem cells (CSCs) that are capable of self-renewal and immune evasion, playing pivotal roles in proliferation, tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance. Exosomes, which are nano-sized extracellular vesicles (EVs), have emerged as crucial mediators of cell-to-cell communication within the tumor microenvironment (TME). These vesicles carry diverse molecules such as DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids, and metabolites, influencing various cellular processes. Emerging evidence suggests that CSC-derived EVs significantly promote tumor progression and metastasis and maintain the balance between CSCs and non-CSCs, which is vital for intracellular communication within the TME of oral cancer. Recent reports indicate that oral cancer stem cell-derived EVs (OCSC-EVs) influence stemness, immune evasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, tumor reoccurrence, and drug resistance. Understanding OCSC-EVs could significantly improve oral cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy. In this mini-review, we explore OCSC-derived exosomes in oral cancer, examining their potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that reflect CSC characteristics, and delve into their therapeutic implications, emphasizing their roles in tumor progression and therapy resistance. However, despite their promising potential, several challenges remain, including the need to standardize isolation and characterization methods and to elucidate exosome-mediated mechanisms. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of OCSC-EVs could pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies that have the potential to improve clinical outcomes for OC patients.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate oncology nurses' knowledge, attitudes, barriers and practices regarding the prevention and management of cancer therapy-associated oral mucositis. Methods A systematic review was conducted by mixed-methods; searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed for the systematic review. Searched relevant literature published in English between January 2000 and December 2023. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to evaluate the quality of the studies. Results A total of 15 studies were included: 10 cross-sectional studies, 4 non-randomized controlled trials, and one qualitative study. This review provides an overview of the studies: nurses had limited knowledge of cancer therapy-associated oral mucositis; generally positive attitudes towards oral care; there is a slight difference in oral care practices. The main barriers of nurses' prevention and management of cancer therapy-associated oral mucositis were lack of time, lack of knowledge, and lack of staff. Conclusions Our results highlight the importance of training for oncology nurses regarding the management of cancer therapy-associated oral mucositis. It is suggested that oncology nurses should focus on strengthening and continuing education in oral care, adopting evidence-based practice and evaluation systems, implementing institution-specific written standards for oral care protocols, and promoting multidisciplinary team cooperation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The dentist's central role in treating head and neck cancer patients is to care for the patient's oral cavity before, during, and after radio/chemotherapy. This research aimed to determine dental students' knowledge about head and neck cancer patients' dental care. METHODS One hundred and four fifth and sixth-year dental students participated in this cross-sectional descriptive study. The data collection tool was a questionnaire that collected demographic information (gender, year of study) and four questions consisting of attendance to courses or workshops, passing a dedicated course at the university, willing to participate in a course or workshop on the treatment of head and neck cancer patients and self-evaluating information about the treatment of head and neck cancer patients. Final part 36 questions about oral and dental care for head and neck cancer patients before, after, and during treatment. The data were analyzed with SPSS 26 statistical software and using t-tests, ANOVA, and linear regression at the 0.05 significance level. RESULTS Most of the participants were in their sixth year (48.9%). A total of 48.1% of the people reported that their information about dental treatments in patients with head and neck cancer was bad. 85% of participants agreed with the necessity of evaluating the patient's mouth and teeth before starting the treatment. The lowest percentage of correct answers was related to the ideal duration of tooth extraction and a poor prognosis before the start of cancer treatment. The regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between years of education, willingness to participate in courses, and students' knowledge evaluation and knowledge. CONCLUSION The findings showed that students' awareness of oral and dental treatment and care for patients with head and neck cancer is insufficient. It is recommended that teaching staff pay more attention to the lack of knowledge and effort to educate students by holding special courses and workshops.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess and compare the quality of life (QOL) in Oral Cancer patients undergoing 3-DCRT with or without concomitant Chemotherapy at three different time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS This unicentric longitudinal study included 50 patients of oral cancer undergoing 3-DCRT with or without concomitant chemotherapy. QOL was recorded using the EORTC H and N 35 Questionnaire at baseline, end of treatment (EOT), and 3 months after treatment. RESULTS Maximum deterioration of most QOL domains were noted at End of treatment (EOT) in all the patients. A highly statistically significant difference was noted between different time intervals with the highest scores noted at the EOT ( P < 0.01). There was a statistically significant difference in patients undergoing 3DCRT with chemotherapy when compared to those with 3DCRT without chemotherapy ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSION There is substantial deterioration in QOL at the EOT after head-neck irradiation by 3-DCRT with or without concomitant Chemotherapy although it gradually improves over time. However, 3DCRT results in clinically meaningful and statistically better QOL scores at 3 months after treatment compared to baseline and EOT.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the experiences of head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors with postradiation trismus, specifically how oncological treatment affected their lives, rehabilitation, use of coping strategies, and healthcare experiences. METHODS A qualitative descriptive approach was used and semi-structured interviews of 10 HNC survivors with postradiation trismus were conducted 6-30 months after completing oncological treatment. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed by qualitative content analysis. RESULTS The analysis of interviews yielded four main categories: Bodily symptoms, Effects on life, Support from the healthcare system, and Strategies to handle life and symptoms. Participants reported ongoing problems with xerostomia, dysgeusia, eating, and limited physical fitness. Pain related to trismus was not a major issue in this cohort. Participants expressed limitations in their social lives due to their eating difficulties, yet a sense of thankfulness for life and overall satisfaction with the healthcare they received. Psychological and practical coping strategies developed by the participants were also revealed. CONCLUSION The results highlight areas of unmet need among HNC survivors that healthcare providers can target by establishing multi-professional teams dedicated to individualizing post-cancer rehabilitation care.

Abstract
PURPOSE The number of older people with poor oral health diagnosed with cancer is increasing rapidly. However, integration of oral health in cancer care for older people to prevent or minimize oral health complications of cancer treatments is uncommon, except in head and neck oncology. The aim of this review is to describe the need, role of, and factors influencing the integration of oral health(care) into the treatment of older people with cancer. METHODS MEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for papers published in the last 10 years that focus on oral health in older people diagnosed with cancer, the impact of oral health on cancer therapy, and integrated oral health in cancer treatment. RESULTS From 523 related papers, 68 publications were included and summarized as follows: (1) oral complications associated with cancer therapies, (2) the need for oral healthcare in older people with cancer, (3) the role of integration of oral health in cancer care, and (4) influencing factors such as ageism, interprofessional education and collaborations, oral healthcare workforce, oral health literacy, and financial considerations. CONCLUSION Integration of oral healthcare is highly recommended for the overall well-being of older people with cancer to prevent, minimize, and manage complications in cancer treatment. However, oral healthcare has not been integrated in cancer care yet, except for head and neck cancers. This review identified a notable gap in the literature, highlighting the need for research on integration of oral healthcare in geriatric oncology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Longitudinal assessment of the role of specific proteins on radiotherapy caries (RC) onset in head and neck cancer patients(HNC) up to one-year post-IMRT using a 5000ppm fluoride paste daily. MATERIALS AND METHODS Dental status/salivary protein data were obtained from 40 HNC patients pre-IMRT, six months (T1) and 12 months (T2) post-IMRT (ethical approval/consent). DMFT/salivary parameters were quantified, including flow rate, mucin 5B/7, Immunoglobulin A (IgA), cystatin S and α-amylase. RESULTS 45% patients had at least one carious lesion at T2, a significant reduction in the number of remaining teeth (65% <21), salivary flow rate (< 50%) and, protein secretion (< 0.05) post-IMRT. T1 IgA concentration/secretion rate was associated with RC (p < 0.05). Finally, IgA and total protein concentration obtained at T1 could provide a predictive pattern (AUC 82.3%) for the patients more predisposed to developing RC at T2. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated the significant association of RC with salivary proteins in HNC patients treated with IMRT, revealing the potential role of salivary proteins in the early diagnosis of RC. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This research contributes to revealing salivary proteins association with RC, and its role in early diagnosis. Therefore, this could be the first step towards personalized medicine approaches to improve this group quality-of-life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous observational studies have suggested a possible association between periodontal disease and gastric cancer (GC); however, a causal relationship has not yet been established. This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between the 2 through a 2-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) study. METHODS Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics were obtained from publicly available GWAS and relevant databases. Two-sample bidirectional MR analysis was conducted to investigate the causal relationship between periodontal disease and GC using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method selected as the primary analytical approach. Cochran Q test, MR-PRESSO, MR-pleiotropy, and leave-one-out analyses were performed to assess heterogeneity, pleiotropy, and sensitivity. RESULTS In European ancestry, IVW analysis revealed no causal relationship between periodontal disease and GC (OR = 1.873; 95% CI [4.788e-10, 7.323e + 09]; P = .956), or between loose teeth and GC (OR = 1.064; 95% CI [0.708, 1.598]; P = .765). In East Asian ancestry, there was no causal relationship between periodontitis and GC according to IVW (OR = 0.948; 95% CI [0.886, 1.015]; P = .126). Conversely, according to the results of the IVW analysis, there was no causal relationship between GC and periodontal disease, regardless of European or East Asian ancestry. Furthermore, there was no heterogeneity or pleiotropy in the causal relationships between these variables (all P > .05), suggesting a certain level of reliability in our results. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this MR study, we found no mutual causal relationship between periodontal disease and GC. This finding can prevent overtreatment by clinical physicians and alleviate the psychological burden on patients.

Abstract
Functional salivary glands (SG) are essential for maintaining oral health, and salivary dysfunction is a persistent major clinical challenge. Several cancer therapies also have off-target effects leading to SG dysfunction. Recent advances highlight the role of SG immune populations in homeostasis, dysfunction and gland regeneration. Here, we review what is known about SG immune populations during development and postnatal homeostasis. We summarize recent findings of immune cell involvement in SG dysfunction following cancer treatments such as irradiation (IR) for head and neck cancers, immune transplant leading to graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment. The role of immune cells in SG in both homeostasis and disease, is an emerging field of research that may provide important clues to organ dysfunction and lead to novel therapeutic targets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Radiation injury is common after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Radiotherapy can reshape the immune microenvironment and cause immunosuppression, including dysregulation of immune checkpoints (ICs). However, the relationship between oral ICs expression after radiation and the development of second primary tumors is unclear. METHODS Clinical specimens of second primary oral squamous cell carcinoma after radiotherapy (s-OSCC) and primary OSCC (p-OSCC) were collected. The expression and prognostic value of PD-1, VISTA, and TIM-3 were analyzed using immunohistochemistry. To further clarify the relationship between radiation and ICs alteration, a rat model was constructed to explore the spatiotemporal changes of ICs in the oral mucosa after radiation. RESULTS In carcinoma tissue, the expression of TIM-3 was higher in s-OSCC than in p-OSCC, while the expression of PD-1 and VISTA was similar between the groups. In para-carcinoma tissue, the expression of PD-1, VISTA, and TIM-3 was higher in s-OSCC. High ICs expression was associated with poor survival. In the rat model, ICs were locally upregulated in the irradiated tongue. Moreover, there was a bystander effect, in which the ICs were also upregulated in the unirradiated site. CONCLUSION Radiation may upregulate ICs expression in oral mucosa and contribute to the development of s-OSCC.

Abstract
Introduction The most effective method of assessing sarcopenia has yet to be determined, whether by single muscle or by whole muscle segmentation. The purpose of this study was to compare the prognostic value of these two methods using computed tomography (CT) images in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and methods Sex- and age-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were employed for each parameter of sarcopenia related to overall survival, disease-free survival, and disease-specific survival. Harrell's concordance index was calculated for each model to assess discriminatory power. Results In this study including 165 patients, a significant correlation was found between the CT-based assessment of individual muscles and their cross-sectional area. Single muscle assessments showed slightly higher discriminatory power in survival outcomes compared to whole muscle assessments, but the difference was not statistically significant, as indicated by overlapping confidence intervals for the C-index between assessments. To further validate our measurements, we classified patients into two groups based on intramuscular adipose tissue content (P-IMAC) of the spinous process muscle. Analysis showed that the higher the P-IMAC value, the poorer the survival outcome. Conclusion Our findings indicate a slight advantage of single-muscle over whole-muscle assessment in prognostic evaluation, but the difference between the two methods is not conclusive. Both assessment methods provide valuable prognostic information for patients with OSCC, and further studies involving larger, independent cohorts are needed to clarify the potential advantage of one method over the other in the prognostic assessment of sarcopenia in OSCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chemotherapy and radiotherapy, used to treat childhood hematological malignancies (acute lymphocytic leukemia [ALL] and acute myelocytic leukemia [AML]) can negatively affect oral tissues and organs. This study aimed to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life in children with ALL/AML. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 99 children, including 49 undergoing ALL/AML (41 with ALL and eight with AML) and 50 healthy volunteers, were included in this cross-sectional study. The mean age of the entire study group was 78.63 ± 34.41 months. The mean age of the ALL/AML and control groups was 87.12 ± 35.04 and 70.95 ± 34.85 months, respectively. The Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (SOHI), the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT/dmft) index, and the Turkish version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS-T) were administered to all children. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 22.0). The Pearson chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare demographic data. RESULTS The age and gender distributions of the two groups were similar. According to ECOHIS-T, the children in the ALL/AML group had significantly more loss of function (eating, drinking, sleeping, etc.) than those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Oral health and self-care were negatively affected by childhood ALL/AML and its treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oral mucositis (OM) is a common debilitating toxicity associated with radiotherapy (RT) for malignant head and neck tumors. This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Streptococcus salivarius K12 (SsK12) in reducing the incidence, duration, and severity of severe OM (SOM). METHODS A total of 160 patients with malignant head and neck tumors undergoing definitive or postoperative adjuvant RT were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive SsK12 probiotic (n = 80) or placebo (n = 80) at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. Patients were instructed to suck SsK12 or placebo lozenges thrice daily from the initiation to the end of RT. OM was evaluated twice a week during RT and once a week thereafter for up to 8 weeks. The primary end point was the incidence of SOM. Adverse events were assessed according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 5.0. RESULTS Baseline patient characteristics were similar in the SsK12 and placebo groups. The incidence of SOM was significantly lower in the SsK12 group as compared with the placebo group (36.6% v 54.2%; P = .0351). The duration (median, 0.0 days v 7.0 days; mean, 8.9 days v 18.3 days; P = .0084) and time to develop SOM (median, not estimable v 42.0 days; hazard ratio, 0.55 [95% CI, 0.34 to 0.89]; log-rank test: P = .0123) were also improved in the case of the SsK12 group. Adverse events were similar between the groups, and mild or moderate gastrointestinal reactions (flatulence or dyspepsia) associated with the lozenges were observed in two patients in the SsK12 group. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that SsK12 inhibited opportunistic pathogens and enriched oral commensals during RT. CONCLUSION In this prospective, randomized clinical trial, SsK12 probiotic significantly reduced the incidence, onset, and duration of SOM with a good safety profile.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assess the impact of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on xerostomia, salivary flow rate (SFR) and composition in patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). STUDY DESIGN Thirty patients undergoing RT (65 Gy) for HNC were enrolled. Saliva and xerostomia evaluations collected pre- and post-PBMT-RT. PBMT involved irradiation of extra and intraoral points, 15-20 sessions, 2-3 times/week. SFR, trace elements, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, xerostomia, and pH were analyzed. RESULTS The average age was 60.7 years. After treatment, there was not a significant reduction in SFR and there was no difference on xerostomia. Significant reductions in Al, Cd, Fe, Ni, P, and Sb concentrations were observed, along with a significant increase in Mg concentration. Sample data were organized into 3 groups based on a self-organizing map. Low concentrations of Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, S, Sr, and Zn were the primary discriminatory factors for group A, while group B consisted of post-PBMT-RT samples with high concentrations of Ca, K, Mg, Na, and S. CONCLUSIONS PBMT prevented a significant reduction in SFR and xerostomia induced by radiation therapy. These findings suggest that PBMT prevents salivary gland damage minimizing the decline in salivary flow.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This work consists in a literature review on the current state of knowledge regarding the oral management of patients with a history of head and neck cancer (HNC), corroborated by clinical cases and illustrated by clear infographic summaries. It aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive overview of the oral health status of HCN patients. RECENT FINDINGS Head and neck cancers (HNCs) represent the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide, with over 660,000 annual new cases. Despite the significant negative impact of HNCs on oral health, patients often receive no or inappropriate oral care while the significant impact of oral pathologies on cancer prognosis is commonly underestimated. This work (i) describes the oral cavity during and after HNC through the prism of care complexity and (ii) highlights several potential key factors that could worsen long-time patients' prognosis and quality of life. By investigating the biological, microbiological, functional, and psychological dimensions of the interrelationships between HNCs and oral health, the authors explored the barriers and benefits of a targeted oral healthcare pathway. This article emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary care and highlights the need for further research elucidating the intricate relationships between oral health and HNCs, particularly through the microbiota.

Abstract
Burning mouth, also referred to as oral dysesthesia, is an underreported condition among cancer patients that may represent an early symptom of cancer or an adverse effect of treatment. This review sought to characterize this symptom in oncology care where burning symptoms may occur. A systematic review of the literature was performed based on the PRISMA statement, and the protocol was registered at PROSPERO database. A structured search was done using eight databases. The process of study selection was conducted in two distinct phases. The JBI Critical Appraisal Tools were utilized to evaluate the risk of bias in the studies included. Of the total number of studies assessed, sixteen met the eligibility criteria. Of these studies included, 7 were case reports, 7 cross-sectional studies, and 2 non-randomized clinical trials. Most studies presented low risk of bias (n = 9), while the remaining studies were evaluated and scored as moderate (n = 5) or high (n = 2) risk of bias. Burning mouth was reported as a first symptom of cancer in three studies, and as an adverse event of radiotherapy (n = 2), chemoradiotherapy (n = 2), and chemotherapy (n = 9). Burning mouth was a first symptom in 0.62% of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and 3.3% of patients with pain as chief complaint. Oral dysesthesia prevalence was 13.6% in patients experiencing chemotherapy-induced oral adverse events. The symptom of burning mouth should be examined in oncology care, as it may be underreported and therefore undertreated. New therapies may be related to a higher risk of oral burning and studies assessing approach to management are needed. Current management borrows from the current management of burning mouth in the non-cancer setting.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oral problems in a group of oncological patients undergoing chemotherapy (CT) for solid tumors have been examined. Incidence and severity of patients' self-reported oral problems have been evaluated along their interaction with age, gender, tumor diagnosis and stage, presence of mestastasis, CT agent type, and number of CT cycle. We also analyzed the presence of paraesthesia and anaesthesia and their predisposing factors associated with clinical and treatment-related variables. METHODS Patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire to evaluate the onset and the intensity of oral and perioral pain, oral mucositis, salivary gland hypofunction, dysgeusia, dysphagia, dysphonia, and sensitivity neuropathy (paraesthesia or dysaesthesia) since the last CT infusion. We also investigated which types of medications have possibly been used and who recommended it, as well as patients' degree of awareness about the possibility of oral problems arising during CT. RESULTS We recruited 194 patients and obtained 491 questionnaires. We found that a metastatic disease was a risk factor for OM (OR 2.02, p = 0.026) and salivary gland hypofunction (OR 1.66, p = 0.042) and that platinum agents, compared to mitotic inhibitors, increased the risk of developing salivary gland hypofunction (OR 2.16, p = 0.013), dysphagia (OR 3.26, p = 0.001), and anaesthesia (OR 5.16, p = 0.041). Young age was a slight protective factor for most symptoms. The 80% of enrolled patients were informed by the oncologist about possible oral problems arising during CT. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlighted the importance of collecting observational data from the patients' perspective on oral problems arising during the routine oncology practice, across a range of solid tumors and CT regimens. The relevance of these findings focused on the key role of the multidisciplinary team in advising the patients on the possible occurrence of oral problems, also by recommending their management.

Abstract
BACKGOUND Surgical treatment for cancers in the oral and maxillofacial region significantly impacts a patient's physical, social, functional, and psychological well-being, which can in-turn affect the Quality of Life (QoL) negatively. The goal of our study was to assess the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients who underwent surgery in our hospital, and we attempted to extrapolate the data which could in the future help improve the QoL of other patients who undergo similar treatments. METHODS This was a retrospective study, including patients who have been treated for oral cancer in the last few years in the institute. The standard EORTC Questionnaires QLQ C-30 (version 3.0) and QLQ H and N-35 (version 1.0) were used in this study. RESULTS GHS scores were lower in patients with T3 stage tumor than in patients with T1 stage tumor. Patients who underwent surgery along with radiotherapy and those who underwent surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy showed a substantial difference in their GHS and FS ratings when their treatment options were compared. Patients who had undergone surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy had higher scores on the symptom scale and QoL H&N-35 than patients who had just undergone surgery and radiotherapy There was no statistically significant difference in the scores, pertaining to the location, age, gender and stage of the tumor but when the comparison was made on the basis of treatment modality chosen, there was a significant difference in the scores. CONCLUSIONS The aim of any treatment is to improve the Quality of Life. The EORTC questionnaires QLQ 30 and QLQ H and N-35 proved to be very appropriate instruments to evaluate QoL in patients with oral cancer. Assessment of QoL should always receive adequate attention in treatment planning and rehabilitation. Choice of treatment modality plays a significant role in QoL of patients treated for oral cancer. Henceforth, any treatment modality should be selected not only with a curative intent but also with the goal of improving the Quality of Life as this ultimately decides the success of the therapy from the patient's perspective.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common oral cavity malignancy associated with multiple risk factors. In the last 14 years, oral dysbiosis has attracted the scientific community's attention as a potential oncogenic factor, in parallel with the development of omics technologies that have revolutionized microbiological research. The present umbrella review aimed to investigate the oral microbiological content (bacilli, viruses, and fungi) of tissue and saliva samples from adult (>18 years) patients with OSCC. The secondary objective was to compare the oral microbiome of OSCC subjects with non-OSCC subjects. The study protocol was under the PRISMA statement and registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023448153). Data from 32 systematic reviews were extracted, qualitatively summarized, and analyzed using AMSTAR-2. An increase in oral bacteria of the phylum Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes and a decrease in Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were observed in OSCC patients. The increased bacterial genera were periodontopathogens. The most common viruses were EBV and HPV, especially the high-risk genotypes. Candida was the most studied oral fungus and was always increased in OSCC subjects. Further studies should investigate the possible carcinogenic mechanisms of oral microorganisms found increased in tissue samples and saliva from adult subjects with OSCC.

Abstract
Salivary gland hypofunction is an adverse side effect associated with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer patients. This study delineated metabolic changes at acute, intermediate, and chronic radiation damage response stages in mouse salivary glands following a single 5 Gy dose. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed on parotid salivary gland tissue collected at 3, 14, and 30 days following radiation (IR). Pathway enrichment analysis, network analysis based on metabolite structural similarity, and network analysis based on metabolite abundance correlations were used to incorporate both metabolite levels and structural annotation. The greatest number of enriched pathways are observed at 3 days and the lowest at 30 days following radiation. Amino acid metabolism pathways, glutathione metabolism, and central carbon metabolism in cancer are enriched at all radiation time points across different analytical methods. This study suggests that glutathione and central carbon metabolism in cancer may be important pathways in the unresolved effect of radiation treatment.
