Abstract
Korean mistletoe (Viscum album L. var. coloratum) is renowned for its medicinal properties, including anti-cancer and immunoadjuvant effects. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms by which Korean mistletoe lectin (V. album L. var. coloratum agglutinin; VCA) modulates breast cancer cell apoptosis and macrophage polarization. The specific objectives were to (1) investigate the direct effects of VCA on MCF-7 breast cancer cells and THP-1-derived M1/M2 macrophages; (2) analyze the impact of VCA on the paracrine interactions between these cell types; and (3) compare the efficacy of VCA in 2D vs. 3D co-culture models to bridge the gap between in vitro and in vivo studies. We employed both 2D and 3D models, co-culturing human M1/M2 macrophages with human MCF-7 breast cancer cells in a Transwell system. Our research demonstrated that M1 and M2 macrophages significantly influenced the immune and apoptotic responses of breast cancer cells when exposed to VCA. M1 macrophages exhibited cytotoxic characteristics and enhanced VCA-induced apoptosis in both 2D and 3D co-culture models. Conversely, M2 macrophages initially displayed a protective effect by reducing apoptosis in breast cancer cells, but this protective effect was reversed upon exposure to VCA. Furthermore, our findings illustrate VCA's ability to modulate M1 and M2 polarization in breast cancer cells. Finally, the use of magnetic 3D cell cultures suggests their potential to yield results comparable to conventional 2D cultures, bridging the gap between in vitro and in vivo studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can play an important role in increasing inflammatory factors and oxidative stress as risk factors for cancers. In the present study, we aimed to assess the relationship between dietary AGEs and the risk of breast cancer (BC) in Iranian adult women. METHODS This hospital-based case-control study includes 401 participants aged ≥ 30 years old. The cases group consisted of 134 women diagnosed with histologically confirmed BC. The control group included 267 women enrolled randomly from patients admitted to the same hospitals. Dietary intake information was determined using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and dietary AGEs intake was computed for all participants. Logistic regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, were used to determine the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of BC across tertiles of dietary AGEs. RESULTS The mean ± SD age and body mass index of the study population were 47.92 ± 10.33 years and 29.43 ± 5.51 kg/m2, respectively. The median (interquartile) of dietary AGEs in all individuals was 9251(7450, 11,818) kU/day. After adjusting for age, first pregnancy age, and energy intake, participants in the highest tertile of dietary AGEs intakes had higher odds of BC compared to those in the lowest tertile of dietary AGEs (OR:2.29;95%CI:1.19-4.39, Ptrend:0.012). Additionally, in the multivariable model, after adjusting for age, age at first pregnancy, energy, menopausal status, family history of cancer, anti-inflammatory drug use, Vitamin D supplementation, physical activity, body mass index, number of childbirths, and history of abortion, breastfeeding, and oral contraceptive pills use, the odds of BC were increased across tertiles of dietary AGEs intake (OR: 2.33; 95%CI: 1.18-4.60, Ptrend: 0.017). CONCLUSION The present findings suggest that a diet with high AGEs is associated with a higher likelihood of BC in adult women.

Abstract
Background: The relationship between dietary antioxidants and breast cancer (BrCa) has been investigated in various studies. As a limitation, they generally investigate the relationship between one specific antioxidant and the risk/odds of BrCa, and synergistic or inhibitory effects are less considered. Dietary antioxidant index (DAI) is a reliable nutritional tool that evaluates total nutritional antioxidant capacity and is validated with serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and Malondialdehyde (MDA). Our study aimed to investigate the association between the DAI and the odds of BrCa and the correlation between the DAI and pathobiological markers. We hypnotized a correlation between DAI and pathobiological markers, and there is an association between DAI and the odds of BrCa.Methods: Our study included 145 incidence cases of BrCa and 148 hospital-based controls. Controls were randomly selected from patients attending the same center and were frequency-matched on age (±10 years). DAI was calculated based on a valid semi-quantitative 168-item food frequency questionnaire data. DAI standardizes intake of major dietary antioxidants, including vitamins A, E, C, selenium, zinc, and magnesium, and presents them as summarized scores.Results: Modeling with multivariable regressions adjusting for major confounders including age, education, body mass index, occupation, alcohol, smoking, pregnancy, history of cancer, menarche age, metabolic equivalent of task, hormone replacement therapy, and total energy intake, there was a significant association between odds of BrCa and DAI (odds ratio = 0.18; 95% confidence interval:0.09-0.37; p-value= <0.01). After multiple controls, there was a significant and weak reverse correlation between DAI and the number of lymph node(s) (correlation coefficient= -.140; p-value = 0.05).Conclusion: Our study supports the hypothesis that dietary antioxidants intake is associated with a reduced odds of BrCa. Evidently, DAI can reveal these relationships better than a single study of antioxidants. However, further studies are needed to confirm or refute these results.

Abstract
Breast cancer, with an overall poor clinical prognosis, is one of the most heterogeneous cancers. DNA damage repair (DDR) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) have been identified to be associated with cancer's progression. Our study aimed to explore whether genes with both functions play a more crucial role in the prognosis, immune, and therapy response of breast cancer patients. Based on the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cancer database, we used LASSO regression analysis to identify the six prognostic-related genes with both DDR and EMT functions, including TP63, YWHAZ, BRCA1, CCND2, YWHAG, and HIPK2. Based on the six genes, we defined the risk scores of the patients and reasonably analyzed the overall survival rate between the patients with the different risk scores. We found that overall survival in higher-risk-score patients was lower than in lower-risk-score patients. Subsequently, further GO and KEGG analyses for patients revealed that the levels of immune infiltration varied for patients with high and low risk scores, and the high-risk-score patients had lower immune infiltration's levels and were insensitive to treatment with chemotherapeutic agents. Furthermore, the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database validated our findings. Our data suggest that TP63, YWHAZ, BRCA1, CCND2, YWHAG, and HIPK2 can be potential genetic markers of prognostic assessment, immune infiltration and chemotherapeutic drug sensitivity in breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most important causes of premature mortality in women worldwide. Around 12% of breast cancer patients will develop metastatic disease, a stage associated with poor prognosis, and only 26% of patients are likely to survive for at least 5 years after being diagnosed. Although the most common sites where breast cancer tends to spread are bones, lungs, brain, and liver, it is important that physicians consider other less frequent organs and viscera, like the bladder, as a target destination. In this article we report our experience with this rare form of metastases and a systematic literature review. We analyzed case reports, case series, and review articles present in PubMED/MEDLINE up to March 2022. We excluded the nonrelevant articles, editorials, letters to the editor, and articles written in other languages. We identified a total of 302 articles, with 200 articles being removed before screening; therefore, the total number of abstracts reviewed was 102. Fifty-five articles were excluded before full text review because they did not meet the inclusion criteria, and one article was not retrievable. Therefore, we included a total of 45 articles in this review. The intention of this review is to highlight the importance of the early detection of bladder metastases and to facilitate the diagnostic process for the responsible physician. The most common signs and symptoms and breast cancer subtype associated with bladder metastases, as well as overall survival after their detection, were all assessed. Bladder metastases from metastatic breast cancer are prevalent in the invasive, lobular breast cancer subtype; most patients present with hematuria (39.5%) and the relative 5-year survival rate is 2%. The main limitations of this review are the low number of cases reported in the literature, clinical and pathological differences between the individual cases, and absence of the control group. Abstract
BackgroundThe effect of tobacco on breast cancer (BC) is controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between tobacco and BC.MethodsA search was conducted in PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases before February 2022. The adjusted odd ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to examine the relationship between active or passive smoking and BC risk.ResultsA total of 77 articles composed of 2,326,987 participants were included for this meta-analysis. Active (OR=1.15, 95% CI=1.11-1.20, p<0.001) and passive (OR=1.17, 95% CI=1.09-1.24, p<0.001) smoking increased the risk of BC in the female population, especially premenopausal BC (active smoking: OR=1.24, p<0.001; passive smoking: OR=1.29, p<0.001), but had no effect on postmenopausal BC (active smoking: OR=1.03, p=0.314; passive smoking: OR=1.13, p=0.218). Active smoking increased the risk of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) BC risk (OR=1.13, p<0.001), but had no effect on estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) BC (OR=1.08, p=0.155). The risk of BC was positively associated with the duration and intensity of smoking, negatively associated with the duration of smoking cessation. Active smoking increased the risk of BC in the multiparous population (OR=1.13, p<0.001), but had no effect on the nulliparous population (OR=1.05, p=0.432), and smoking before the first birth (OR=1.22, 95% CI=1.17-1.27) had a greater impact on the risk of BC than smoking after the first birth (OR=1.08, 95% CI=1.04-1.12).ConclusionSmoking (active and passive) increased the risk of BC in women. The effect of smoking on BC was influenced by smoking-related factors (duration, intensity, years of quitting), population-related factors (fertility status), and BC subtypes.Systematic Review Registrationidentifier CRD42022322699.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed female cancer worldwide. It has been shown that oxidative stress can contribute to cancer development. Therefore, we investigated the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and breast cancer risk in a case-control study. This study was conducted on 136 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and 272 hospitalized controls in Tehran, Iran. Participant habitual diet was obtained using a 168-item validated food frequency questionnaire. Dietary TAC scores were computed using two different methods: the dietary ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) method and oxygen radical scavenging capacity (ORAC). The association between dietary TAC and breast cancer risk was estimated by logistic regression. The score of DTAC calculated by ORAC method was associated with lower odds of BC, especially among premenopausal women. However, this association was not significant after controlling potential confounders (ORAC: OR Q4-Q1 = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.42-2.44, p-trend = 0.96). Estimation of DTAC by FRAP method was not associated with the risk of BC (FRAP: OR Q4-Q1 = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.53-2.05, p-trend = 0.8). There were no association detected based on menopausal status. In this study, dietary TAC was not significantly related to the odds of breast cancer.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women from 20 to 59 years old. The conventional treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy. This immunotherapy is based on administering monoclonal therapeutic antibodies (passive) or vaccines (active) with therapeutic purposes. Several types of vaccines could be used as potential treatments for cancer, including whole-cell, DNA, RNA, and peptide-based vaccines. Peptides used to develop vaccines are derived from tumor-associated antigens or tumor-specific antigens, such as HER-2, MUC1, ErbB2, CEA, FRα, MAGE A1, A3, and A10, NY-ESO-1, among others. Peptide-based vaccines provide some advantages, such as low cost, purity of the antigen, and the induction of humoral and cellular immune response. In this review, we explore the different types of vaccines against breast cancer with a specific focus on the description of peptide-based vaccines, their composition, immune response induction, and the description of new potential therapeutic targets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the association of calorie and carbohydrate intake with tumour grade in early detection of breast cancer (BC) in Iranian women. MATERIALS AND METHODS This case-control study carried out on 62 women with high grade BC and 93 women with low grade BC. Information about confounding variables was collected through a questionnaire. Dietary intake of calorie and macronutrients was assessed by a valid 122-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS Individuals with high grade BC had significantly lower calorie (0.16, 0.04-0.61) and higher carbohydrate intake (4.02; 1.28-12.63) compared with those with low grade BC after controlling for age. This correlation remained significant after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSION Our results showed that lower intakes of calorie and higher carbohydrate are directly related to the high grade of tumour at the early detection of people with BC after modifying a wide range of confounding factors.

Predicting prognosis and clinical features of the tumor microenvironment based on ferroptosis score in patients with breast cancer. Sci Rep 2022; 12:10611. Abstract
Ferroptosis genes have recently been reported to be involved in regulating the development of cancer, but their potential role in breast cancer (BRCA) is not fully understood. The purpose of this study is to systematically study the mechanism of ferroptosis in BRCA and its relationship with this cancer’s prognosis, cell infiltration, gene mutation, and other clinical features. In this study, The Cancer Genome Atlas breast cancer (TCGA-BRCA) database (UCSC Xena) was used to mine the ferroptosis genes related to BRCA patients, and the genes with prognostic value were screened by Cox regression analysis, which were then used to construct a prognostic model for scoring prognostic molecular risk. The relationships between ferroptosis score and prognosis, molecular typing, and clinical characteristics of BRCA were also analyzed. A total of 176 ferroptosis genes related to BRCA were retrieved from the database, 22 of which were found to be significantly related to BRCA prognosis after screening by single-factor Cox regression analysis (p < 0.01). Unsupervised clustering of samples was performed using factoextra, and two subgroups (ferroptosis cluster A and ferroptosis cluster B) with significant differences in prognosis were identified. Subsequently, single-factor Cox regression analysis and random forest dimensionality reduction were used to screen characteristic genes to construct a ferroptosis score model, which included a high ferroptosis score group and a low ferroptosis score group. The results showed that there were significant differences in ferroptosis scores between the ferroptosis cluster A and B groups. The prognosis of patients with low ferroptosis scores was poor, and the overall survival (OS) rate of patients with high ferroptosis scores was significantly higher, indicating that the prognosis of the sample can be well characterized based on calculated ferroptosis scores. Ferroptosis scores differed significantly according to patient age, TP53 and PIK3CA gene mutations, different PAM50 molecular types, and clinical stages. Ferroptosis activation plays a non-negligible role in tumor occurrence and development. Evaluating the ferroptosis score within BRCA will help advance our understanding of the infiltrating properties of cells in the tumor microenvironment and may guide more effective immunotherapy strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous evidence suggests a link between diet quality and breast cancer (BrCa); however, the link between the Lifelines Diet Score (LLDS)-a fully food-based score that uses the 2015 Dutch Dietary Guidelines-and risk of BrCa has not yet been evaluated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to observe the relationship between adherence to an LLDS and risk of BrCa in Iranian adults. METHODS In the hospital-based case-control study, 253 patients with BrCa and 267 non-BrCa controls were enrolled. Individual's food consumption was recorded to calculate LLDS using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. In adjusted models, the association between the inflammatory potential of the diet and the risk of BrCa was estimated by using binary logistic regression. RESULTS Compared with control individuals, BrCa patients significantly had higher waist circumference (WC), first pregnancy age, abortion history, and number of children. In addition, the mean intake of vitamin D supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs in the case group was significantly lower than the control group. Furthermore, after adjusted potential confounders, individuals in the highest vs. lowest quartiles of LLDS showed statistically significant lower risk of BrCa in overall population (OR: 0.21; 95% CI: 0.11-0.43; P trend <0.001), premenopausal (OR: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.10-0.68; P trend = 0.003), and post-menopausal women (OR: 0.20; 95% CI: 0.06-0.60; P trend = 0.015). CONCLUSION Findings of this study reflected that higher LLDS decreased risk of BrCa, but need further investigation in later studies.

Abstract
The 2020 Dudrick Research Symposium, entitled "Expanding the Boundaries of Cancer Care Through Nutritional Support," was held on March 30, at the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), Nutrition Science & Practice Conference. It was scheduled to take place in Tampa, Florida, but had to be held virtually. The Dudrick Symposium honors the many pivotal and innovative contributions made by the late Dr Stanley J. Dudrick, physician scientist, academic leader, and a founding member of ASPEN. This year, in addition to honoring his legacy, we honored his life. As the 2019 recipient of the Dudrick Research Scholar Award, Dr Pimiento chaired the symposium. The presentations focused on discussing the history, the present and future frontiers in the overlapping fields of nutrition support and cancer care. The late Dr John Daly opened the presentation with a moving tribute to Dr Dudrick's life and then spoke about the impact of nutrition support on surgical care and outcomes for cancer patients. Dr Pimiento discussed the role of nutraceuticals for cancer chemoprevention, and the level 1 clinical evidence surrounding this topic. Dr Kraemer explored the role of exercise physiology for optimal nutrient utilization and the overlap between targeted physical activity and nutrition support to obtain better outcomes on the cancer population. The symposium was closed by Dr Stephen Hursting, who discussed the impact of obesity in the soaring cancer rates and its relationship with clinical outcomes. In this article, we cover the presentations by Drs Pimiento and Kraemer.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BrCA) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide. This study aimed to examine the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and BrCA among Jordanian women. A total of 400 adult women were enrolled into this case-control study. Cases were 200 women recently diagnosed with BrCA selected from the two hospitals that provide cancer therapy in Jordan. They were matched on age, income, and marital status with 200 BrCA-free controls. DII scores were calculated from dietary data that were collected in a face-to-face interview conducted between October 2016 and September 2017 using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. The study results revealed no significant associations between DII scores in relation to the odds of developing BrCA after multivariable adjustment including age, education, total energy, BMI, number of pregnancy, contraceptive use, lactation, smoking, and family history of BrCA. Stratified analyses by obesity status showed that overweight/obese participants in the highest DII tertile had a >75% increased BrCA risk (OR of 1.77 [95% CI, 1.01-3.12]) compared with participants in the lowest tertile, after adjusting for age. The results from this study showed no significant relationship between the proinflammatory potential of the diet and BrCA risk in the overall study population. However, results stratified by weight category indicated an effect of diet-associated inflammation on BrCA risk in the overweight/obese group. Results of the study are consistent with a recommendation aimed at maintaining higher diet quality, that is, adopting healthy diets characterized by low DII scores in order to reduce the risk for BrCA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiation therapy is a widely employed modality that is used to destroy cancer cells, but it also tends to induce changes in the tumor microenvironment and promote angiogenesis. Radiation, when used as a sole means of therapeutic approach to treat cancer, tends to trigger the angiogenic pathways, leading to the upregulation of several angiogenic growth factors such as VEGF, bFGF, PDGF and angiogenin. This uncontrolled angiogenesis leads to certain angiogenic disorders like vascular outgrowth and an increase in tumor progression that can pose a serious threat to patients. OBJECTIVE This review emphasizes on various components of the tumor microenvironment, angiogenic growth factors and biological effects of radiation on tumors in provoking the relapse. It also describes the angiogenic mechanisms that trigger the tumor relapse after radiation therapy and how angiogenesis inhibitors can help in overcoming this phenomenon. It gives an overview of various angiogenesis inhibitors in pre-clinical as well as in clinical trials. CONCLUSION The review focuses on the beneficial effects of the combinatorial therapeutic approach of anti-angiogenesis therapy and radiation in tumor management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Germline BRCA1/2 mutation carriers (gBMC) face increased cancer risks that are modulated via non-genetic lifestyle factors whose underlying molecular mechanisms are unknown. The peptides Neurotensin (NT) and Enkephalin (ENK)-involved in tumorigenesis and obesity-related diseases-are of interest. We wanted to know whether these biomarkers differ between gBMC and women from the general population and what effect a 1-year lifestyle-intervention has in gBMC. METHODS The stable precursor fragments pro-NT and pro-ENK were measured at study entry (SE), after 3 and 12 months for 68 women from LIBRE-1 (a controlled lifestyle-intervention feasibility trial for gBMC involving structured endurance training and the Mediterranean Diet). The SE values were compared with a cohort of the general population including female subjects with and without previous cancer disease, non-suggestive for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (OMA-reference). For LIBRE-1, we analysed the association between the intervention-related change in the two biomarkers and certain lifestyle factors. RESULTS At SE, gBMC had a higher median pro-NT than OMA-reference (in the subgroups with previous cancer 117 vs. 91 pmol/L, p = 0.002). Non-diseased gBMC had lower median pro-ENK levels when compared to the non-diseased reference group. VO2peak and pro-NT 1-year change in LIBRE-1 were inversely correlated (r = - 0.435; CI - 0.653 to - 0.151; p = 0.004). Pro-ENK correlated positively with VO2peak at SE (r = 0.323; CI 0.061-0.544; p = 0.017). Regression analyses showed an inverse association of 1-year changes for pro-NT and Omega-6/Omega-3 (Estimate: - 37.9, p = 0.097/0.080) in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION Our results give first indications for lifestyle-related modification particularly of pro-NT in gBMC.

Abstract
Black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets with excellent features have been broadly employed for cancer therapy. BPs in blood were known to form BP nanomaterial-corona complexes, yet not explored their biological effects. In this study, BPs as delivery vehicles loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) (BP-DOX) by electrostatic interaction had been successfully prepared for photo-thermal/chemotherapy with a tumor inhibition rate of 81.47% more than the rates of BPs (69.50%) and free DOX (51.91%) in the Hela-bearing mice model by a pH/photo-responsive controlled drug release property. Then, in vivo experiments demonstrated that the treatment of healthy mice with BPs led to mild inflammation in the body and oxidative stress in the liver and lung which caused cell apoptosis. In vitro studies further showed that oxidative stress and metabolic disorders could be induced by BPs in A549, HepG2, Beas-2B, and LO2 cells. Lastly, the RGD peptide-conjugated red blood cell (RBC) membrane-coated BPs (RGD-RBC@BP) was prepared by lipid insertion and co-ultrasound methods for efficient photo-thermal therapy (PTT) cancer via a tumor-targeted strategy. RGD-RBC@BP showed positive biocompatibility, photo-thermal properties, and increased cellular uptake by Hela cells benefited by the long circulation property of RBC and RGD peptides. Pharmacokinetics and bio-distribution study of RGD-RBC@BP were found to prolong circulation time and tended to accumulate in the tumors, which overexpression of ανβ3 integrin rather than livers after intravenous injection 24 h in vivo. After 808 nm laser irradiation, RGD-RBC@BP nanoparticles exhibited a better PTT than PEGylated BPs (BP-PEG). The active-targeting strategy of biomimetic nanomaterials based on the tumor microenvironment have been proved to have favorable biological prospects in cancer PTT.

Abstract
Simple Summary Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent cell death which is distinctive from common forms of cell death. Accumulating evidence indicated the close relationship between ferroptosis and numerous human diseases. Regarding breast cancer, a related study indicated that some targeted medicines could induce ferroptosis, furthermore, some basic research found that ferroptosis-related genes were closely related to breast cancer. However, the correlation between ferroptosis-related genes and breast cancer patients’ prognosis remains unknown. We built an 8-ferroptosis-related-gene model to predict breast cancer patients’ prognosis. This model could stratify patients into high- or low-risk groups. Additionally, tumor microenvironment analyses displayed differently enriched immune cells and immune pathways between these two groups. This 8-gene model is believed to be of great value in predicting prognosis for breast cancer patients. Abstract Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women, thus a reliable prognostic model for overall survival (OS) in breast cancer is needed to improve treatment and care. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent cell death. It is already known that siramesine and lapatinib could induce ferroptosis in breast cancer cells, and some ferroptosis-related genes were closely related with the outcomes of treatments regarding breast cancer. The relationship between these genes and the prognosis of OS remains unclear. The data of gene expression and related clinical information was downloaded from public databases. Based on the TCGA-BRCA cohort, an 8-gene prediction model was established with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) cox regression, and this model was validated in patients from the METABRIC cohort. Based on the median risk score obtained from the 8-gene model, patients were stratified into high- or low-risk groups. Cox regression analyses identified that the risk score was an independent predictor for OS. The findings from CIBERSORT and ssGSEA presented noticeable differences in enrichment scores for immune cells and pathways between the abovementioned two risk groups. To sum up, this prediction model has potential to be widely applied in future clinical settings.

Abstract
A close link between cardiovascular diseases and cancer results from sharing the same modifiable risk factors (e.g. nutritional) and cardiotoxicity of anti-cancerous therapies. It justifies cardio-oncological preliminary studies on dietary factors, especially on those of possible anti-carcinogenic or cardioprotective properties. The main purpose was to evaluate the effect of pomegranate seed oil (PSO) and/or bitter melon extract (BME) supplementation of the diet of female rats suffering from mammary tumors on lipidomic profile (expressed as fatty acids, conjugated fatty acids (CFA), malondialdehyde (MDA), cholesterol and oxysterols content) of cardiac tissue. Total lipidomic profile and intensity of lipid peroxidation in hearts of DMBA-treated Sprague-Dawley rats and their healthy equivalents, both obtaining diet supplementation, were evaluated with different chromatographic techniques coupled with appropriate detection systems (GC-MS, GC-TOFMS, Ag+-HPLC-DAD, UF-HPLC-DAD). Dietary modifications neither diminished breast cancer incidence nor exerted explicit cardio-protective influence, however, they diminished cholesterol content, i.a. because of inhibition of the endogenous conversion of squalene to cholesterol in cardiac tissue. CFA were incorporated into cardiac tissue to a lesser extent in the cancerous process. PSO and BME anti-oxidant properties in pathological condition were only slightly reflected in MDA levels but not in oxysterols formation. Obtained results indicate considerable changes in dietary supplements' biological activity in pathological conditions and the need for clear distinction of drugs and dietary supplements, which is of utmost importance, especially for cancer survivors.

Abstract
Following a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and beans may reduce cancer incidence and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Coping with Cancer in the Kitchen (CCK), an 8 week in-person program offering education, culinary demonstrations and food tasting, and psychosocial group support, compared to receiving CCK printed materials by mail on knowledge, confidence, and skills in implementing a plant-based diet. A total of 54 adult cancer survivors were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 26) and control groups (n = 27) with assessments at baseline, 9, and 15 weeks via self-administered survey. The response rate was 91% at 9 weeks and 58% at 15 weeks. The majority of our study participants were female breast cancer survivors (58%) who had overweight or obesity (65%). Compared with the control, there were significant (p < 0.05) increases in intervention participants’ knowledge about a plant-based diet at weeks 9 and 15, reductions in perceived barriers to eating more fruits and vegetables at week 9, and enhanced confidence and skills in preparing a plant-based diet at week 15. There was a significant reduction in processed meat intake but changes in other food groups and psychosocial measures were modest. Participation in CCK in person increased knowledge, skills, and confidence and reduced barriers to adopting a plant-based diet. Positive trends in intake of plant-based foods and quality of life warrant further investigation in larger-scale studies and diverse populations.

Abstract
In recent years, natural products have increasingly attracted more attention because of their potential anticancer activity and low intrinsic toxicity. Hispidulin is a natural flavonoid with a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiplatelet, anticonvulsant, anti-osteoporotic, and notably anticancer activities. Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that hispidulin, as a potential anticancer drug, affects cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Moreover, hispidulin exhibits synergistic anti-tumor effects when combined with some common clinical anticancer drugs (e.g., gemcitabine, 5-fluoroucil, sunitinib, temozolomide, and TRAIL). The combination of hispidulin and chemotherapeutic drugs reduces the efflux of chemotherapeutic drugs, enhances the chemosensitivity of cancer cells, and reverses drug resistance. Herein, we outlined the anticancer effects of hispidulin in various cancers and its intracellular molecular targets and related mechanisms of its anticancer activity. Based on the available literature, it can be established that hispidulin has significant potential to become an important complementary medicine for cancer prevention and treatment. However, more in-depth in vitro and in vivo studies should be conducted to support its translation from bench to bedside.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer and the leading cause
of cancer deaths in women worldwide. A number of established risk factors for BC have been identified
in many previous studies which included age, reproductive history, lactation, hormone levels or
use, genetic factors, breast density and various diet and lifestyle factors. Several previous studies
highlighted the independent effect of dietary patterns, lifestyle factors, macro- and micronutrients intake,
physical activity, tobacco smoking, and weight gain on the risk BC. Although a number of risk
factors have been identified for BC, however, some are difficult to modify such as genetic factors,
while dietary pattern, physical activity, nutrient intake and smoking are modifiable risk factors which
could be targeted to reduce the risk of this devastating disease. Even though there is a quick advancement
in BC cancer therapy, but still, the survival rate is not increasing. Therefore, preventing
cancer development is more important than treating or inhibiting its progression and such prevention
can reduce the suffering and pain of patients and their families.

Abstract
Background Breast carcinoma (BC) is a cancer with a high morbidity rate, but the mechanisms by which it develops are never clear. There has been speculation regarding the potential relationships between breast cancer and local HPV infections for some time, and although much clinical research supports this hypothesis, some research results disprove the association. Therefore, the association is still inconclusive. Methods We performed the data collection by searching the database PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of science. In addition, 22 sites were added manually. After carefully selection, the pooled odds rate of 37 included case control studies was calculated. Subgroup analysis, publication bias and trim & fill analysis were conducted to make the result more reliable. Results The analysis of 37 case control studies containing 3,607 BC cases and 1,728 controls showed obviously increase of BC risk with human papillomavirus (HPV) positive [summary odds ratio (SOR) =6.22, 95% confidence interval 4.25 to 9.12; P=0.0002]. Subgroup analysis proved three high risk HPV types (HPV16, 18 and 33) were positively correlated to BC. Conclusions This systemic review and meta-analysis provide the evidence for HPV infection as a potential risk factor in BC, while the mechanism of this hypothesis still needs further evaluation.

Abstract
Breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have shared risk factors and mechanisms of pathogenicity, as proven by increased cardiac risk in breast cancer patients receiving anticancerogenic therapies and in cancer survivors. A growing mammary tumor may cause heart injury in cancer patients who have not yet been treated. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation of female rats with 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-induced cancerogenesis on fatty acids (FAs), conjugated FAs (CFAs), malondialdehyde (MDA), cholesterol and oxysterols content in cardiac tissue. FAs, cholesterol and oxysterols contents were determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, while the contents of CFAs and MDA were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode detection. Our results indicate that both CLA supplementation and the presence of tumors influence the lipid biomarkers of CVD. A significant interaction of both experimental factors was observed in the content of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs), n-6 PUFAs and CFAs. CLA supplementation significantly inhibited PUFA oxidation, as evidenced by the lower content of MDA in rats' hearts, while the cancerous process intensified the oxidation of cholesterol, as confirmed by the elevated levels of 7-ketocholesterol in DMBA-treated rats. These results may significantly expand knowledge about CLA properties in terms of the prevention of co-existing non-communicable diseases.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) remains the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women in the US, despite advances in detection and treatment. In addition, breast cancer survivors often struggle with long-term treatment related comorbidities. Identifying novel therapies that are effective while minimizing toxicity is critical in curtailing this disease. Flavonoids, a subclass of plant polyphenols, are emerging as promising treatment options for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Recent evidence suggests that in addition to anti-oxidant properties, flavonoids can directly interact with proteins, making them ideal small molecules for the modulation of enzymes, transcription factors and cell surface receptors. Of particular interest is the ability of flavonoids to modulate the tumor associated macrophage function. However, clinical applications of flavonoids in cancer trials are limited. Epidemiological and smaller clinical studies have been largely hypothesis generating. Future research should aim at addressing known challenges with a broader use of preclinical models and investigating enhanced dose-delivery systems that can overcome limited bioavailability of dietary flavonoids. In this review, we discuss the structure-functional impact of flavonoids and their action on breast tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment, with an emphasis on their clinical role in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Breast cancer (BC) is the most common type of cancer worldwide. Globally, BC is rapidly becoming a major common health problem among women. This study aimed to evaluate the association between nutrient intake patterns and BC risk among Jordanian women. METHODS A total of 400 Jordanian women 20-65 years of age were recruited in this case-control study. Two hundred women recently diagnosed with BC were matched in age, income, and marital status to 200 BC-free women. A food frequency questionnaire was used to assess nutrient intake patterns. RESULTS In this study, 3 nutrient intake patterns were identified: a high vitamin C and β-carotene nutrient intake pattern; a high calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D nutrient intake pattern; and a high-fat nutrient intake pattern. A significant increase in BC risk was associated with the high vitamin C and β-carotene nutrient pattern (the highest for the fourth quartile; odds ratio [OR], 5.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.11 to 13.91; ptrend=0.001). In the high calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D nutrient pattern, a significant inverse trend was detected for the risk of BC. The high-fat nutrient pattern showed a significant direct association with BC risk in the third (OR, 3.88; 95% CI, 1.58 to 9.51) and fourth (OR, 3.87; 95% CI, 1.53 to 9.77) quartiles (ptrend=0.001). CONCLUSIONS A significant increase in BC risk was detected for the high vitamin C and β-carotene nutrient intake pattern and the high-fat nutrient intake pattern. However, for the high calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D nutrient intake pattern, a significant inverse trend was observed.

Abstract
AbstractEnvironmental factors during perinatal life can lead to changes in the mammary gland, making it susceptible to cancer in adulthood. Breastfeeding has a special importance since it takes place at a critical period of growth and development of the newborn. We aimed to analyze if an appropriate lactation protects the offspring against mammary carcinogenesis during adult life and explore the mechanisms involved in the protective effect. One-day-old Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly distributed in litters of three (L3), eight (L8) or 12 (L12) pups per dam, to induce a differential consumption of breast milk. At 55 days of age, the animals were treated with a single dose of dimethylbenzanthracene to study tumor latency, incidence and progression. Histological, immunohistochemical and Western blot studies were performed. We observed lower incidence and higher latency in L3 compared to the other groups. The mitotic index and expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was significantly augmented in tumors of L12 rats compared to L3 and L8, while the apoptotic index was augmented in tumors of L3 v. L12. Cleaved caspase 8 was significantly higher in tumors from L3 compared to L12. Tumors developed in L3 have a greater number of apoptotic bodies and a greater expression of caspase 8. These results demonstrate that the animals that maintained a higher intake of maternal milk (L3) presented lower incidence and greater tumor latency. Lower consumption of breast milk (L12) would increase tumor mitosis and the expression of PCNA, explaining the higher tumor incidence observed in this group.

Abstract
Dietary compounds that possess the properties of altering epigenetic processes are gaining popularity as targets for cancer prevention studies. These compounds when administered at optimal concentrations and especially in combination can have enhanced effects in cancer prevention or therapy. It is important to study the interaction of two or more compounds in order to assess their role in enhancing prevention. Genistein (GEN), found in soy, has been extensively studied for its role as an epigenetic modifier especially as a DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitor and sulforaphane (SFN), found in cruciferous vegetables, is known as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor. However, very little is known about the effects of these two compounds in conjunction in breast cancer prevention or therapy. In our current study, we determined that, at certain doses, the compounds have synergistic effects in decreasing cellular viability of breast cancer cell lines. Our results indicate that the combination of GEN and SFN is much more effective than their single doses in increasing the rate of apoptosis and lowering the colony forming potential of these cells. We determined that these compounds inhibit cell cycle progression to G2 phase in MDA-MB-231 and G1 phase in MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines. Additionally, we determined that the combination is effective as an HDAC and histone methyltransferase (HMT) inhibitor. Furthermore, we demonstrated that this combination downregulates the levels of HDAC2 and HDAC3 both at the mRNA and protein levels. We also found that these compounds have the potential to downregulate KLF4 levels, which plays an important role in stem cell formation. The combination of GEN and SFN is also effective in downregulating hTERT levels, which is known to be activated when KLF4 binds to its promoter region. Our hypothesis is further strengthened by in vivo studies, where the combination is administered to transgenic mice in the form of genistein and SFN-enriched broccoli sprouts. We have demonstrated that the combination is more effective in preventing or treating mammary cancer via extending tumor latency and reducing tumor volumes/sizes than either of these dietary components administered alone. These results are consistent with our in vitro study suggesting potential preventive and therapeutic effects of this novel dietary combinatorial approach against breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Latinas suffer disproportionately from breast cancer (BC) in part due to lower guideline-concordant screening. Multiple intervention approaches have been developed to promote screening through direct patient education and empowerment approaches (i.e., training community members to share BC information). This study compares the relative effects of these approaches on: 1) women's BC screening; and, 2) women's dissemination of BC information within their social networks. DESIGN/METHODS Our quasi-experimental trial is being implemented in community venues in two predominantly Latino neighborhoods in South and West Chicago. Eligible participants: 1) are female; 2) are 52-74 years old; 3) have not obtained a mammogram in the past 2 years; and, 4) have not previously participated in health-related volunteerism. Based on their geographic location, participants are assigned to one of two group-based interventions. Both interventions consist of three two-hour sessions, which includes BC early detection education. The education intervention sessions also covers BC prevention (diet, physical activity), whereas the empowerment intervention covers sharing information with family/friends, and health volunteerism. Navigation is provided for all women who wish to obtain mammograms. Primary outcomes include: 1) receipt of BC screening; and, 2) participants' dissemination of BC information. Secondary outcomes include positive changes in 1) participants' self-reported psychosocial facilitators; and, 2) social network members' BC behaviors. DISCUSSION The design of our program allows for a preliminary comparison of the effectiveness of these two approaches. This work will inform larger comparativeness trials and offers a new approach to intervention evaluation via social network analysis.

Abstract
Apigenin is found in several dietary plant foods such as vegetables and fruits. To investigate potential anticancer properties of apigenin on human breast cancer, ER-positive MCF-7 and triple-negative MDA MB-231 cells were used. Moreover, toxicological safety of apigenin towards normal cells was evaluated in human lymphocytes. Cytotoxicity of apigenin towards cancer cells was evaluated by MTT assay whereas further genotoxic and oxidative stress parameters were measured by comet and lipid peroxidation assays, respectively. In order to examine the type of cell death induced by apigenin, several biomarkers were used. Toxicological safety towards normal cells was evaluated by cell viability and comet assays. After the treatment with apigenin, we observed changes in cell morphology in a dose- (10 to 100 μM) and time-dependent manner. Moreover, apigenin caused cell death in both cell lines leading to significant toxicity and dominantly to apoptosis. Furthermore, apigenin proved to be genotoxic towards the selected cancer cells with a potential to induce oxidative damage to lipids. Of great importance is that no significant cytogenotoxic effects were detected in normal cells. The observed cytogenotoxic and pro-cell death activities of apigenin coupled with its low toxicity towards normal cells indicate that this natural product could be used as a future anticancer modality. Therefore, further analysis to determine the exact mechanism of action and in vivo studies on animal models are warranted.

Abstract
The research of carcinogenetic mechanisms of breast cancer in different ethnic backgrounds is an interesting field, as clinical features of breast cancers vary among races. High premenopausal incidence is distinctive in East-Asian breast cancer. However, human cell lines derived from Asian primary breast tumor are rare. To provide alternative cell line models with a relevant genetic background, we aimed to establish breast cancer cell lines from Taiwanese patients of Han-Chinese ethnicity. Fresh tissue from mammary tumors were digested into organoids, plated and grown in basal serum-free medium of human mammary epithelial cells (HuMEC) with supplements. Cells were further enriched by positive selection with CD326 (epithelial cell adhesion molecule; EpCAM)-coated micro-magnetic beads. Two breast cancer cell lines derived from premenopausal women were successfully established by this method, and named Chang-Gung Breast Cancer 01 (CGBC 01) and 02 (CGBC 02). These two cell lines had a similar phenotype with weak expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and without amplification of receptor tyrosine protein kinase erbB-2 (HER2/neu). Genome-wide Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) array showed multiple copy number alterations in both cell lines. Based on gene expression profiles, CGBC 01 and 02 were clustered into basal-like subtype with reference to the breast cancer cell line gene expression database. The tumorigenicity of both cell lines was extremely low in both anchorage-independence assay and transplantation into the mammary fat pads of nude mice. CGBC 01 and CGBC 02 are low tumorigenic breast cancer cell lines, established from Han-Chinese premenopausal breast cancer patients, which serve as in vitro models in studying the biological features of Asian breast cancer.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an explosion in the amount of available information on cancer in parallel with an ever-increasing number of cancer survivors. Cancer patients and long-term survivors are known to be more sensitive to health-related information and dietary changes could represent a potential consequence of this huge availability of messages. In our review about dietary changes after cancer diagnosis, we found that this topic is particularly investigated among the breast cancer population. The literature examined show that breast cancer patients modify their eating habits after diagnosis in a percentage that varies between approximately 30% and 60%. The most reported changes were an increased consumption of fruit and vegetables, a decrease in the consumption of red meat, fats and sugary foods. Patients who reported changes were more likely to be younger, with higher educational levels and with a longer period of time since their diagnosis of cancer. It also emerged that cancer patients are often more likely to use supplements. This topic has not been investigated in cancer patients in Italy, therefore, we propose an approach to explore it with a structured questionnaire: The "ECHO SURVEY - Eating habits CHanges in Oncologic patients".

Abstract
Objective Many breast cancer survivors have unmet physical and psychological needs. Therefore, current study aimed to evaluate the impact of a lifestyle interventions program on fatigue, quality of sleep, quality of life (QoL), and body mass index (BMI) in women with breast cancer. Materials and Methods This randomized controlled trial study (RCT) was carried between 2012 and 2015, and included 80 women with breast cancer. They were divided into two groups via a random allocation process: 40 women were allocated to the lifestyle interventions group, and 40 to the control group. Women in the lifestyle group received dietary energy-restriction training and practiced supervised aerobic exercises for 45-60 minutes three times per week throughout 24 weeks and the control group continued their routine life. Results Differences between the two groups were significantly high for those who participated in the intervention group; this group reported significantly less fatigue, less BMI, improved QoL and better quality of sleep as compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion Breast cancer survivors may physically and psychologically benefit from participating in a healthy lifestyle interventions program. This program can help relieve fatigue, maintain healthy BMI, improve QoL and enhance the quality of sleep in women with breast cancer. Lifestyle interventions program may provide a non-pharmacologic adjunctive therapy for symptom management in breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
The Indigenous people of Australia face significant health gaps compared with the general population, with lower life
expectancies, higher rates of death, and chronic illness occurring more often than in non-indigenous Australians. Cancer
is the second largest contributor to the burden of disease with breast cancer being the most common invasive cancer
diagnosed for females. Despite a lower breast cancer incidence compared with non-indigenous women, fatalities occur
at an elevated rate and breast cancers have an earlier age of onset. For indigenous women there are also more advanced
and distant tumours at diagnosis, fewer hospitalisations for breast cancer, and lower participation in breast screening.
Concomitantly there are demographic, socio-economic and lifestyle factors associated with breast cancer risks that
are heavily represented within Indigenous communities. The aim of this two-part narrative review is to examine the
available evidence on breast cancer and its risk factors in Australian Indigenous women. Part One presents a summary
of the latest incidence, survival and mortality data. Part Two presents the risk factors most strongly associated with
breast cancer including age, place of residence, family risk, genetics, reproductive history, tobacco use, alcohol intake,
physical activity, participation in screening and breast density. With increasing emphasis on personalized health care, a
clear understanding of breast cancer incidence, survival, mortality, and causal agents within the Indigenous population
is required if breast cancer prevention and management is to be optimized for Indigenous Australians.

Abstract
The present investigation reveals the in vitro cytotoxic effect of the biosynthesised metal nanoparticles on the MCF 7 breast cancer cell lines. The gold and silver nanoparticles were synthesised through an environmentally admissible route using the Mukia Maderaspatna plant extract. Initially, the biomolecules present in the plant extract were analysed using phytochemical analysis. Further, these biomolecules reduce the metal ion solution resulting from the formation of metal nanoparticles. The reaction parameters were optimised to control the size of nanoparticles which were confirmed by UV visible spectroscopy. Various instrumental techniques such as Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterise the synthesised gold and silver nanoparticles. The synthesised gold and silver nanoparticles were found to be 20-50 nm and were of different shapes including spherical, triangle and hexagonal. MTT and dual staining assays were carried out with different concentrations (1, 10, 25, 50 and 100 µg/ml) of gold and silver nanoparticles. The results show that the nanoparticles exhibited significant cytotoxic effects with IC 50 value of 44.8 µg/g for gold nanoparticles and 51.3 µg/g for silver nanoparticles. The observations in this study show that this can be developed as a promising nanomaterial in pharmaceutical and healthcare sector.

Abstract
Background: In oncology, physical activity (PA) is recognized to
improve psychological and physiological functions. Motivating women with breast
cancer to sustain a physically active lifestyle is important for promoting
positive health after diagnosis. To review and synthesize what is known about
how women with breast cancer experience supervised and unsupervised PA during
and after adjuvant treatment. PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were searched,
yielding 994 citations. The final review included 17 articles published between
2004 and 2014 in English. The CASP (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme)
instrument was used to appraise quality. Results: Exercise is
experienced as a positive element with multiple benefits. However, maintaining a
physically active lifestyle during and after chemotherapy is sometimes
challenging. Reported benefits of PA include feeling empowered, and improving
and reclaiming health. Facilitators to PA comprised exercising with peers and
skilled instructors. Barriers included social factors and lack of information.
Conclusions: Findings highlight the importance of incorporating
PA programs from a patient experience perspective as routine treatment. Health
care professionals play a crucial “gateway” role in providing information on
implementation and benefits of PA. Providing support and educated advice about
how to safely start or continue regular PA to minimize symptoms, reduce
morbidity, and increase well-being during or after treatment is vital for women
with breast cancer. Implications for Practice: Health care
professionals need increased knowledge of the breast cancer patients’
perspectives on facilitators and barriers to PA during and after treatment, in
order to provide sufficient support for women to stay physically active during a
breast cancer illness.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common cancer in Mexican women. Certain risk factors, such as environmental and lifestyle factors have been implicated in BCa initiation and progression. Moreover, genetic factors, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the P450 system, have been reported in BCa. In this report, and for the first time in the literature, we analyzed the rs5602 (67730 T > C) polymorphism in the CYP8A1 in patients with BCa and in healthy Mexican women to identify a potential risk between this polymorphism and BCa. Leukocyte cells from 38 control patients and tissue from radical mastectomy surgeries in 64 BCa patients were used for polymorphism analysis using an allelic discrimination assay with TaqMan probes. Links with clinic-pathological characteristics were also analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using the standard χ(2) or Fisher exact test statistic. All CYP8A1 genotypes were detected in patients with BCa and the controls. Significant differences were observed in the distribution of CYP8A1 genotypes between the patients and controls (P=0.0008) and allele C was significantly associated with BCa risk (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.166-3.72, P=0.0178). All polymorphism frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) in the controls (P > 0.05). We found that variant 67730 T > C was significantly associated with an increased risk of BCa (P < 0.05). We not observed an association of the TT and TC + CC genotypes with the clinical stage, BIRADS, estrogen receptor (ER) status, progesterone receptor (PR) status, HER2 status, p53 status, CD34 status, metastasis or therapy use. These results indicate that the CYP8A1 rs5602 SNP is a possible risk factor for BCa in Mexican women. This study showed an association between the CYP8A1 polymorphism and BCa risk in a Mexican population.
