Abstract
Simple Summary Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes covering the brain) is a common problem in 3- to 10-week-old piglets. It is often caused by bacteria that are called Streptococcus. Clinical signs such as problems with coordination of the limbs can be observed by the farmer, but it is also possible that piglets die suddenly, before clinical signs are detected. Therefore, examining dead piglets is often performed to establish a diagnosis. Unfortunately, meningitis is often difficult to recognise by the eye. To assist veterinarians in forming a quick diagnosis of meningitis and possible bacterial involvement, a microscopic evaluation of cells taken from the meninges was performed. This examination allowed the prediction of the likely presence of meningitis and the involvement of Streptococcus species in most of the cases. Microscopic findings were compared with bacteriological culture results, and based on this comparison, indications of meningitis and Streptococcal presence seemed correct in 89% and 100% of the cases, respectively. However, if only a few cells indicating meningitis were observed microscopically, no reliable prediction was possible. In conclusion, microscopic evaluation of cells from the meninges of piglets can help swine practitioners in establishing a tentative diagnosis of meningitis more quickly, which allows for better treatment, improves animal welfare, and reduces antimicrobial use. Abstract Meningitis, caused by bacterial infections such as Streptococcus spp., is a frequently observed cause of death in pigs. In order to implement effective treatment and avoid further losses, it is important to establish this diagnosis quickly. However, this is often difficult because macroscopic lesions may not be visible, and additional laboratory testing may take several days. The present study investigated whether microscopical examination of impression smears of the leptomeninges taken during necropsy can help in establishing a presumptive diagnosis of meningitis in pigs more quickly. In total, 54 pigs suffering from neurological signs and/or (acute) mortality were examined. They were 3 to 10 weeks old and originated from 16 farms. From each pig, bacterial culture was performed on one half of the brain using a swab from the leptomeninges. From the other half, paired cytological impression smears of the leptomeninges were stained with a commercial quick stain dye (Hemacolor®) and Gram stain and microscopically evaluated for the abundance of neutrophils and the presence of short-chain coccoid bacteria. Bacterial culture of the leptomeninges was positive in 36/54 cases, in 28 of which Streptococcus spp. were found. The numbers of smears with low, moderate, or high abundance of neutrophils were 19, 17, and 18, respectively. Short-chain coccoid bacteria were detected successfully in 12 pigs in the Gram-stained smear. The positive predictive value of smears with moderate or high abundance of neutrophils for bacterial presence and, therefore, likely meningitis was 89%, whereas the negative predictive value of smears with low abundance of neutrophils was 74%. The positive predictive value of smears with short chains of coccoid bacteria for diagnosis of Streptococcus spp. was 100%, whereas the negative predictive value was 62%. In conclusion, microscopical examination of impression smears of the leptomeninges of piglets with neurological signs and/or (acute) mortality is a feasible procedure that can help swine practitioners in establishing a tentative diagnosis of meningitis more quickly, especially if neutrophils are abundant, and short chains of coccoid bacteria are present.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen, demonstrated as an etiological agent in human infections in increasing frequency, including diseases like purulent meningitis, sepsis, uveitis-endophtalmitis and arthritis. Due to the increased availability and utility of novel diagnostic technologies in clinical microbiology, more studies have been published on the epidemiology of S. suis, both in veterinary and human medicine; however, there are no comprehensive data available regarding human S. suis infections from East-Central European countries. As a part of our study, data were collected from the National Bacteriological Surveillance (NBS) system on patients who had at least one positive microbiological result for S. suis, corresponding to an 18-year study period (2002-2019). n = 74 S. suis strains were isolated from invasive human infections, corresponding to 34 patients. The number of affected patients was 1.89 ± 1.53/year (range: 0-5). Most isolates originated from blood culture (63.5%) and cerebrospinal fluid (18.9%) samples. Additionally, we present detailed documentation of three instructive cases from three regions of the country and with three distinctly different outcomes. Hungary has traditional agriculture, the significant portion of which includes the production and consumption of pork meat, with characteristic preparation and consumption customs and unfavorable epidemiological characteristics (alcohol consumption, prevalence of malignant diseases or diabetes), which have all been described as important predisposing factors for the development of serious infections. Clinicians and microbiologist need to be vigilant even in nonendemic areas, especially if the patients have a history of occupational hazards or having close contact with infected pigs.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis, a prevalent porcine pathogen, may sporadically cause infections in humans, and has recently emerged as a cause of zoonoses in some professionals. The aim of this article was to review available data on epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, diagnostics, and management of the most common form of S. suis infection, purulent meningitis. Literature data show that S. suis is an important etiological factor of purulent meningitis, especially in subjects being occupationally exposed to contact with pigs and/or pork meat. Owing to growing incidence of S. suis meningitis, a history of such exposure should be verified in each patient presenting with typical meningeal symptoms. Whenever S. suis was confirmed as the etiological factor of purulent meningitis, therapeutic protocol should be adjusted appropriately, to avoid patient's exposure to potentially ototoxic antimicrobial agents and corticosteroids. Considering the biphasic character of S. suis meningitis and its frequently atypical outcome, all individuals with this condition should be optimally supervised by a multidisciplinary team, including an ENT specialist.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic pathogen that can cause severe systemic infections in humans as well as swine. In recent decades, the number of S. suis infections in humans has increased, particularly in Southeast Asia. Although most cases of S. suis human infections are reported as sporadic, a few outbreaks have been noted. Interestingly, these outbreaks have been proposed to be associated with concomitant outbreaks in swine. In Korea, four sporadic and non-fatal cases of S. suis infection have been reported. We herein report a case of life-threating S. suis infection with sepsis for the first time in Korea. The patient was a healthy pig farmer, and the gastrointestinal tract was considered the route of infection. This case emphasized the need for awareness and recognition of S. suis as a zoonotic pathogen.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis is an important pig pathogen with potential for human
transmission. The serotype distributions and phenotypic characteristics vary over time and
among regions; however, little is known about the characteristics of S.
suis isolates in Korea. In this study, 240 S. suis isolates
collected from pigs in Korea in 2009–2010 were serotyped by coagglutination tests,
subsequently screened for three virulence-associated genes (mrp,
epf and sly) and tested for antimicrobial
susceptibility. As for 80 isolates, the serotypes of which were relevant to human
infections, clonal complexes (CCs) were further identified by PCR. Serotype 3 was the most
prevalent (15.8%), followed by serotype 2 (15.0%), with geographical variation for each
serotype. Overall, 55.4% of the isolates carried mrp, whereas only 3.8%
carried epf. CC25 was the most prevalent (41.3%) and was related to
serotypes 2 and 9. The isolates showed higher susceptibility to ampicillin (93.4%) and
ceftiofur (90.8%) than to the other antimicrobial agents tested. The highest resistance
rate was observed to tetracycline (98.0%), followed by erythromycin (88.8%). In addition,
the resistance to certain antimicrobials was significantly associated, in part, with
virulence-associated genes or serotypes. Therefore, continuous characterization of
S. suis is essential for the benefit of veterinary and human
medicine.

Abstract
Characterization of 227 Streptococcus suis strains isolated from pigs during 2010 to 2013 showed high levels of resistance to clindamycin (95.6%), tilmicosin (94.7%), tylosin (93.8%), oxytetracycline (89.4%), chlortetracycline (86.8%), tiamulin (72.7%), neomycin (70.0%), enrofloxacin (56.4%), penicillin (56.4%), ceftiofur (55.9%), and gentamicin (55.1%). Resistance to tetracyclines, macrolides, aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolone was attributed to the tet gene, erm(B), erm(C), mph(C), and mef(A) and/or mef(E) genes, aph(3')-IIIa and aac(6')-Ie-aph(2″)-Ia genes, and single point mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region of ParC and GyrA, respectively.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis is an important pathogen causing economic problems in the pig
industry. Moreover, it is a zoonotic agent causing severe infections to people in close
contact with infected pigs or pork-derived products. Although considered sporadic in the
past, human S. suis infections have been reported during the last 45 years, with
two large outbreaks recorded in China. In fact, the number of reported human cases has
significantly increased in recent years. In this review, we present the worldwide
distribution of serotypes and sequence types (STs), as determined by multilocus sequence
typing, for pigs (between 2002 and 2013) and humans (between 1968 and 2013). The methods
employed for S. suis identification and typing, the current epidemiological
knowledge regarding serotypes and STs and the zoonotic potential of S. suis are
discussed. Increased awareness of S. suis in both human and veterinary diagnostic
laboratories and further establishment of typing methods will contribute to our knowledge
of this pathogen, especially in regions where complete and/or recent data is lacking. More
research is required to understand differences in virulence that occur among S.
suis strains and if these differences can be associated with specific serotypes or
STs.

Abstract
Because information on biological agents in the workplace is lacking, biological hazard analyses at the workplace to securely recognize the harmful factors with biological basis are desperately needed. This review concentrates on literatures published after 2010 that attempted to detect biological hazards to humans, especially workers, and the efforts to protect them against these factors. It is important to improve the current understanding of the health hazards caused by biological factors at the workplace. In addition, this review briefly describes these factors and provides some examples of their adverse health effects. It also reviews risk assessments, protection with personal protective equipment, prevention with training of workers, regulations, as well as vaccinations.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a family of pathogenic gram-positive bacterial strains that represents a primary health problem in the swine industry worldwide. S. suis is also an emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes severe human infections clinically featuring with varied diseases/syndromes (such as meningitis, septicemia, and arthritis). Over the past few decades, continued efforts have made significant progress toward better understanding this zoonotic infectious entity, contributing in part to the elucidation of the molecular mechanism underlying its high pathogenicity. This review is aimed at presenting an updated overview of this pathogen from the perspective of molecular epidemiology, clinical diagnosis and typing, virulence mechanism, and protective antigens contributing to its zoonosis.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis causes meningitis and sepsis in pigs, but human infection has increased over the past few years in those who are exposed to pigs or raw pork. Most cases have occurred in Southeast Asia, but only two cases have been reported in South Korea, presenting with arthritis and meningitis. Here, we report a rare case of S. suis infection, a 60-year-old sailor, who visited the emergency room presenting septicemia, pneumonia with empyema and meningitis, showed full recovery; however, neurologic sequale of severe cognitive dysfunction was present after the usage of antibiotics and percutaneous drainage. S. suis was isolated from blood and pleural fluid and the strain was susceptible to penicillin and vancomycin. Increased awareness of S. suis infection and prevention are warranted.
