pH-Responsive Aqueous Bubbles Stabilized With Polymer Particles Carrying Poly(4-vinylpyridine) Colloidal Stabilizer

Efficient removal of nanoplastics from industrial wastewater through synergetic electrophoretic deposition and particle-stabilized foam formation

Microplastic particles have been discovered in virtually all ecosystems worldwide, yet they may only represent the surface of a much larger issue. Nanoplastics, with dimensions well below 1 µm, pose an even greater environmental concern. Due to their size, they can infiltrate and disrupt individual cells within organisms, potentially exacerbating ecological impacts. Moreover, their minute dimensions present several hurdles for removal, setting them apart from microplastics. Here, we describe a process to remove colloidally stable nanoplastics from wastewater, which synergistically combines electrophoretic deposition and the formation of particle-stabilized foam. This approach capitalizes on localized changes in particle hydrophilicity induced by pH fluctuations resulting from water electrolysis at the electrode surface. By leveraging these pH shifts to enhance particle attachment to nascent bubbles proximal to the electrode, separation of colloidal particles from aqueous dispersions is achieved. Using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) colloidal particles as a model, we gain insights into the separation mechanisms, which are subsequently applied to alternative model systems with varying surface properties and materials, as well as to real-world industrial wastewaters from dispersion paints and PMMA fabrication processes. Our investigations demonstrate removal efficiencies surpassing 90%.

Uniform Two-Dimensional Crystalline Platelets with Tailored Compositions for pH Stimulus-Responsive Drug Release

Two-dimensional, size-tunable, water-dispersible particle micelles with spatially defined chemistries can be obtained by using "living" crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) approach. Nevertheless, a major obstacle of crystalline particles in drug delivery application is the difficulty in accessing to cargo within crystalline cores. In the present work, we design four different types of biocompatible two-dimensional platelets with a crystalline poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) core, a hydrophobic poly(4-vinylprydine) (P4VP) segment, and a water dispersible poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMA) block in ethanol by seeded growth method. Transferring those uniform platelets with tailored compositions to an aqueous solution in the presence of a hydrophobic drug leads to efficient encapsulation of the cargo in the P4VP segments via hydrophobic interactions. These drug-loaded platelets exhibit pH-responsive release behavior in aqueous media due to the protonated-deprotonated process of P4VP blocks in acidic and neutral solutions. This work provides initial insight into biocompatible PCL platelets with low dispersity and precise chemistry control in stimulus-responsive drug delivery fields.

Investigation on the Controllable Synthesis of Colorized and Magnetic Polystyrene Beads With Millimeter Size via In Situ Suspension Polymerization

A series of colorized and magnetic polystyrene/Fe₃O₄ (PS/Fe₃O₄) composite beads with millimeter size are successfully synthesized by introducing hydrophobic Fe₃O₄via in situ suspension polymerization of styrene for the first time. Effects of the hydrophobic Fe₃O₄ content, stirring speed, and surfactant dosage on the macromorphology and particle size of PS/Fe₃O₄ beads are systematically investigated to realize the controllable synthesis. Moreover, three kinds of hydrophobic pigments are also employed to synthesize colorized polystyrene, which demonstrates the versatility, simplicity, and wide applicability of the proposed method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and element mapping (EM) images demonstrated that the hydrophobic Fe₃O₄ is well dispersed in the polystyrene matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the resultant PS/Fe₃O₄ beads possess a better thermal stability than neat PS. PS/Fe₃O₄ beads have a promising application in the fields of colorized extruded PS board, colorized expanded PS foam particle, and board.

Pickering Interfacial Catalysis for Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation in Oil Foams

Oil foams stabilized by surface-active catalytic particles bearing fluorinated chains and Pd nanoparticles allowed fast and efficient aerobic oxidation of a variety of aromatic and aliphatic alcohols compared to bulk catalytic systems at ambient O₂ pressure. High foam stability was achieved at low particle concentration (<1 wt %) provided that the contact angle locates in the range 41°-73°. The catalytic performance was strongly affected by the foaming properties, with 7-10 times activity increase in pure O₂ compared to nonfoam systems. Intermediate foam stability was required to achieve good catalytic activity, combining large interfacial area and high gas exchange rate. Particles were conveniently recycled with high foamability and catalytic efficiency maintained for at least seven consecutive runs.

Branched Au Nanoparticles on Nanofibers for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing of Intracellular pH and Extracellular pH Gradients

The development of plasmonic-active nanosensors for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing is important for gaining knowledge on intracellular and extracellular chemical processes, hypoxia detection, and label-free detection of neurotransmitters and metabolites, among other applications in cell biology. The fabrication of SERS nanosensors for optophysiology measurements using substrates such as nanofibers with a uniform distribution of plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) remains a critical hurdle. We report here on a strategy using block copolymer brush-layer templating and ligand exchange for fabricating highly reproducible and stable SERS-active nanofibers with tip diameters down to 60 nm and covered with well-dispersed and uniformly distributed branched AuNPs, which have intrinsic hotspots favoring inherently high plasmonic sensitivity. Among the SERS sensors investigated, those with Au nanostars with short branches [AuNS(S)s] exhibit the greatest SERS sensitivity, as verified also by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations. Functionalization of the AuNS(S)s with the pH-sensitive molecule, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, led to SERS nanosensors capable of quantifying pH over a linear range of 6.5-9.5, covering the physiological range. These pH nanosensors were shown to be able to detect the intracellular pH as well as extracellular pH gradients of in vitro breast cancer cells with minimal invasiveness and improved SERS sensitivity, along with a high spatial resolution capability.

pH-Dependent Foam Formation Using Amphoteric Colloidal Polymer Particles

Near-monodispersed micrometer-sized polystyrene (PS) particles carrying amidino and carboxyl groups on their surfaces were synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization using an amphoteric free radical initiator. The resulting amphoteric PS particles were characterized in terms of diameter, morphology, disperibility in aqueous media and surface charge using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), sedimentation rate and electrophoretic measurements. At pH 2.0, where the amidino groups are protonated (positively charged), and at pH 11.0, where the carboxyl groups are deprotonated (negatively charged), the PS particles were well dispersed in aqueous media via electrostatic repulsion. At pH 4.8, where the surface charges are neutral, the PS particles were weakly aggregated. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the PS particles can function as a pH-sensitive foam stabilizer: foamability and foam stability were higher at pH 2.0 and 4.8, where the PS particles can be adsorbed to the air–water interface, and lower at pH 11.0, where the PS particles tend to disperse in bulk aqueous medium. SEM and OM studies indicated that hexagonally close-packed arrays of PS particles were formed on the bubble surfaces and moiré patterns were observed on the dried foams. Moreover, the fragments of dried foams showed iridescent character under white light.

Microgels at fluid-fluid interfaces for food and drinks

Various aspects of microgel adsorption at fluid-fluid interfaces of relevance to emulsion and foam stabilization have been reviewed. The emphasis is on the wider non-food literature, with a view to highlighting how this understanding can be applied to food-based systems. The various different types of microgel, their methods of formation and their fundamental behavioral traits at interfaces are covered. The latter includes aspects of microgel deformation and packing at interfaces, their deformability, size, swelling and de-swelling and how this affects their surface activity and stabilizing properties. Experimental and theoretical methods for measuring and modelling their behaviour are surveyed, including interactions between microgels themselves at interfaces but also other surface active species. It is concluded that challenges still remain in translating all the possibilities synthetic microgels offer to microgels based on food-grade materials only, but Nature's rich tool box of biopolymers and biosurfactants suggests that this field will still open up important new avenues of food microstructure development and control.

Colloidal Stabilizer-Assisted Polymerization-Induced Precipitation Method for Colloidally Stable Polyacid Particles

Near-monodispersed, colloidally stable, submicrometer-sized poly(acid phosphoxy ethyl methacrylate) (PAPEMA) latex particles were synthesized by free-radical dispersion polymerization using poly( N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PNVP) as both a steric colloidal stabilizer and a precipitating agent. Polymerization in the absence of PNVP led to a homogeneous transparent solution of PAPEMA, which indicates that the PNVP is essential for latex formation and the complex of PNVP and PAPEMA was formed during the dispersion polymerization. Dispersion copolymerizations with a divinyl cross-linking comonomer (∼20 wt % based on acid phosphoxy ethyl methacrylate) were also successful in synthesizing near-monodispersed, colloidally stable cross-linked PAPEMA latex particles, and the softness and p K_a values of the resulting PAPEMA latex particles can be controlled by varying the divinyl comonomer concentration. These sterically stabilized latex particles were characterized by electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental microanalysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Characterization results indicated that the PNVP colloidal stabilizer was likely to be located homogeneously on the particle surfaces and within the interior of particles. Finally, it was demonstrated that the PAPEMA latex particles worked as an effective surface modifier for metal surfaces.

Peptide-Drug Conjugate-Based Nanocombination Actualizes Breast Cancer Treatment by Maytansinoid and Photothermia with the Assistance of Fluorescent and Photoacoustic Images

To develop a highly efficient strategy against tumors, here, a nanocombination (PDC/P@HCuS) was designed and constructed to actualize chemo-phototherapy with the assistance of fluorescence (FL) and photoacoustic (PA) images. First, a type of organic-inorganic hybrid nanosystem (P@HCuS) was engineered by coupling the fluorescence-labeled amphiphilic fPEDC copolymer on the surface of hollow mesoporous copper sulfide nanoparticle (HCuS), in which HCuS was used as a photothermal and PA agent; fPEDC as a stabilizer, chromophore, and redox/pH-sensitive gatekeeper; and both of them as drug carriers. Then, a peptide-drug conjugate (cRGD-SMCC-DM1, PDC), as a molecular targeted maytansinoid, was loaded inside of P@HCuS to form PDC/P@HCuS. Next, the PDC/P@HCuS was investigated carefully with or without near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. In vitro, the nanocombination exhibited stimuli-responsive drug release, obvious cellular uptake, strong cytotoxicity to tumor cells, significant impact on cell cycle, and cytoskeleton and cellular proteomics as well as evident permeability into the tumor sphere, most of which could be boosted by NIR laser irradiation. In vivo, the nanocombinaiton exerted good FL/PA imaging features and photothermal efficiency, achieved the best antitumor efficacy in the presence of NIR laser irradiation, and showed excellent biosafety. Together, it demonstrated that the PDC/P@HCuS, representing a chemo-phototherapy based on a nanocombination associated with peptide-drug conjugate, could achieve the highly efficient antitumor effect.
