Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the preventive effects of polysaccharides extracted from the roots of Arctium lappa (ALP) against acute lung injury (ALI) models induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The polysaccharides were extracted and characterized, and their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacities were assessed. The findings demonstrated that ALP could mitigate the infiltration of inflammatory cells and reduce alveolar collapse in LPS-induced ALI in mice. The expression levels of the pro-inflammatory factor TNF-α decreased, while the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 increased. Furthermore, the administration of ALP improved the activities of lung antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, GSH, and CAT, and lowered MDA levels. These results suggest that ALP exhibits a preventive effect on ALI and has potential as an alternative treatment for lung injury.

Abstract
Apples are deeply loved by people because of their rich nutritional value, but they are susceptible to rotting. The use of antagonistic yeast is a promising method for controlling postharvest fruit diseases, but biocontrol efficacy of yeast will be weakened in environmental stress. In this study, the effects of glycine (Gly) on the oxidative stress tolerance and the biocontrol efficacy of Sporidiobolus pararoseus (S. pararoseus) against Aspergillus niger (A. niger) are discussed. Under the stimulation of H2O2, the yeast cells treated with Gly (1 mM) showed lower ROS content, less mitochondrial impairment and cellular oxidative damage, and the cell survival rate was significantly higher than Gly-untreated yeast. The yeast cells exposed to Gly significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and the content of glutathione (GSH). Notably, Gly-treated yeast cells had better biocontrol efficacy against A. niger in postharvest apples. The lesion diameter and decay incidence were reduced by 17.67 mm and 79.63% compared to the control, respectively, when S. pararoseus was treated with 1 mM Gly. Moreover, Gly-treated yeast increased the antioxidant enzymes activities and their gene expression were up-regulated in apples. These results indicated that 1 mM Gly not only reduced the oxidative damage of yeast, but also induced resistance-related enzymes of apples under oxidative stress, which contributed to enhancing the biocontrol efficacy of S. pararoseus against A. niger in apples.

Enhancement of Biocontrol Efficacy of Pichia kudriavzevii Induced by Ca Ascorbate against Botrytis cinerea in Cherry Tomato Fruit and the Possible Mechanisms of Action. Abstract
This study investigated the effect of Ca ascorbate on the biocontrol efficacy of Pichia kudriavzevii and the possible mechanisms. The results indicated that the biocontrol activity of P. kudriavzevii was significantly enhanced by 0.15 g L−1 of Ca ascorbate, with higher growth rates of yeast cells in vitro and in vivo. The antioxidant enzyme activity in P. kudriavzevii, including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD), were improved by Ca ascorbate and reached the maximum at 96 h, 96 h, and 72 h, respectively. The expression of the antioxidant enzyme-related genes CAT1 (8.55-fold) and SOD2 (7.26-fold) peaked at 96 h, while PRXIID (2.8-fold) peaked at 48 h, which were similar to the trends of enzyme activities. Compared with the control, 0.15 g L−1 of Ca ascorbate and CaCl2 increased the activity of succinate dehydrogenase in P. kudriavzevii, thereby enhancing the utilization of nutrients by yeast cells, and calcium ascorbate had the strongest effect. The expressions of HXT5, ADH6, PET100p, and Pga62 were significantly higher in the Ca ascorbate treatment than the other groups, and the CaCl2 treatment was also significantly higher than the control. These results indicated that Ca ascorbate can effectively improve the energy metabolism and cell wall synthesis and slow down the senescence of yeast cells. In general, Ca ascorbate can improve the environmental adaptability of P. kudriavzevii and thus improve the biocontrol effect, which is associated with inducing antioxidant enzymes in yeast cells and enhancing energy metabolism and nutrient utilization efficiency to increase nutrient competition with pathogens. IMPORTANCE Antagonistic yeast is a promising way to control postharvest fruit decay because of its safety and broad-spectrum resistance. However, the biocontrol efficacy of yeast is limited by environmental stress, such as oxidative stress. Therefore, the improvement of antioxidant capacity has become a research hot spot in improving the biocontrol efficacy of yeast. The induction of Ca ascorbate on the antioxidant capacity and physiological activity of yeast was studied. The results showed better induction of antioxidant enzyme and physiological activity in yeast by Ca ascorbate for better antioxidant capacity, and Ca2+ also played a synergistic promotion effect, which improved the biocontrol efficacy. These results provide an approach for the research and application of improving the environmental adaptability and biocontrol effectiveness of yeast.

Abstract
Penicillium digitatum is the most severe pathogen that infects citrus fruits during storage. It can cause fruit rot and bring significant economic losses. The continuous use of fungicides has resulted in the emergence of drug-resistant strains. Consequently, there is a need to develop naturally and efficiently antifungal fungicides. Natural antimicrobial agents such as clove oil, cinnamon oil, and thyme oil can be extracted from different plant parts. They exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties and have great potential in the food industry. Here, we exploit a novel cinnamaldehyde (CA), eugenol (EUG), or carvacrol (CAR) combination antifungal therapy and formulate it into nanoemulsion form to overcome lower solubility and instability of essential oil. In this study, the antifungal activity evaluation and transcriptional profile of Penicillium digitatum exposed to compound nanoemulsion were evaluated. Results showed that compound nanoemulsion had a striking inhibitory effect on P. digitatum in a dose-dependent manner. According to RNA-seq analysis, there were 2,169 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between control and nanoemulsion-treated samples, including 1,028 downregulated and 1,141 upregulated genes. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis indicated that the DEGs were mainly involved in intracellular organelle parts of cell component: cellular respiration, proton transmembrane transport of biological process, and guanyl nucleotide-binding molecular function. KEGG analysis revealed that metabolic pathway, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism were the most highly enriched pathways for these DEGs. Taken together, we can conclude the promising antifungal activity of nanoemulsion with multiple action sites against P. digitatum. These outcomes would deepen our knowledge of the inhibitory mechanism from molecular aspects and exploit naturally, efficiently, and harmlessly antifungal agents in the citrus postharvest industry.

Abstract
Fungal attacks on stored fruit and vegetables are responsible for losses of products. There is an active research field to develop alternative strategies for postharvest disease management, and the use of biocontrol agents represents a promising approach. Understanding the molecular bases of the biocontrol activity of these agents is crucial to potentiate their effectiveness. The yeast Papiliotrema terrestris is a biocontrol agent against postharvest pathogens. Phenotypic studies suggest that it exerts its antagonistic activity through competition for nutrients and space, which relies on its resistance to oxidative and other cellular stresses. In this study, we developed tools for genetic manipulation in P. terrestris to perform targeted gene replacement and functional complementation of the transcription factors Yap1 and Rim101. In vitro phenotypic analyses revealed a conserved role of Yap1 and Rim101 in broad resistance to oxidative stress and alkaline pH sensing, respectively. In vivo analyses revealed that P. terrestris yap1Δ and rim101Δ mutants display decreased ability to colonize wounded fruit compared to that of the parental wild-type (WT) strain; the yap1Δ mutant also displays reduced biocontrol activity against the postharvest pathogens Penicillium expansum and Monilinia fructigena, indicating an important role for resistance to oxidative stress in timely wound colonization and biocontrol activity of P. terrestris In conclusion, the availability of molecular tools developed in the present study provides a foundation to elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying biocontrol activity of P. terrestris, with the goal of enhancing this activity for the practical use of P. terrestris in pest management programs based on biological and integrated control.IMPORTANCE The use of fungicides represents the most effective and widely used strategy for controlling postharvest diseases. However, their extensive use has raised several concerns, such as the emergence of plant pathogens' resistance as well as the health risks associated with the persistence of chemical residues in fruit, in vegetables, and in the environment. These factors have brought attention to alternative methods for controlling postharvest diseases, such as the utilization of biocontrol agents. In the present study, we developed genetic resources to investigate at the molecular level the mechanisms involved in the biocontrol activity of Papiliotrema terrestris, a basidiomycete yeast that is an effective biocontrol agent against widespread fungal pathogens, including Penicillium expansum, the etiological agent of blue mold disease of pome fruits. A deeper understanding of how postharvest biocontrol agents operate is the basic requirement to promote the utilization of biological (and integrated) control for the reduction of chemical fungicides.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are small molecules with high oxidative activity, and are usually produced as byproducts of metabolic processes in organisms. ROS play an important role during the interaction between plant hosts and pathogenic fungi. Phytopathogenic fungi have evolved sophisticated ROS producing and scavenging systems to achieve redox homeostasis. Emerging evidences suggest that ROS derived from fungi are involved in various important aspects of the development and pathogenesis, including formation of conidia, sclerotia, conidial anastomosis tubes (CATs) and infectious structures. In this mini-review, we summarize the research progress on the redox homeostasis systems, the versatile functions of ROS in the development and pathogenesis of phytopathogenic fungi, and the regulation effects of exogenous factors on intercellular ROS and virulence of the fungal pathogens.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a dual role in fruit–pathogen interaction, which largely depends on their different levels in cells. Fruit recognition of a pathogen immediately triggers an oxidative burst that is considered an integral part of the fruit defense response. ROS are also necessary for the virulence of pathogenic fungi. However, the accumulation of ROS in cells causes molecular damage and finally leads to cell death. In this review, on the basis of data regarding ROS production and the scavenging systems determining ROS homeostasis, we focus on the role of ROS in fruit defense reactions against pathogens and in fungi pathogenicity during fruit–pathogen interaction.

Abstract
Utilizing antagonistic yeasts is a promising approach for managing postharvest decay of fruits. However, it is well established that various severe stresses encountered in the environment and production process cause the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in yeast cells, resulting in cell damage and loss of vitality. Here, proline has been shown to function as a cell protectant and inducer of biofilm formation able to increase the oxidative stress tolerance and the biocontrol ability of the antagonistic yeast Metschnikowia citriensis. Addition of proline to M. citriensis cells induced a significant rise in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity in the early and late stages of oxidative stress, respectively, and increased the maroon pigment production that directly reduced intracellular iron content and indirectly diminished intracellular ROS levels and thus inhibited ROS- and iron-induced apoptosis. Treating cells with iron chelator tropolone yielded similar results. Pigment production induced by proline also enhanced the capability of biofilm formation of M. citriensis. These results suggested an important role for pigment of M. citriensis in response to oxidative stress. The abilities of proline to scavenge intracellular ROS and inhibit apoptosis, increase pigment production, and promote biofilm formation contribute to the improvements in oxidative stress tolerance and biocontrol efficacy of M. citriensis.

Abstract
Food spoilage is a major issue for the food industry, leading to food waste, substantial economic losses for manufacturers and consumers, and a negative impact on brand names. Among causes, fungal contamination can be encountered at various stages of the food chain (e.g., post-harvest, during processing or storage). Fungal development leads to food sensory defects varying from visual deterioration to noticeable odor, flavor, or texture changes but can also have negative health impacts via mycotoxin production by some molds. In order to avoid microbial spoilage and thus extend product shelf life, different treatments—including fungicides and chemical preservatives—are used. In parallel, public authorities encourage the food industry to limit the use of these chemical compounds and develop natural methods for food preservation. This is accompanied by a strong societal demand for ‘clean label’ food products, as consumers are looking for more natural, less severely processed and safer products. In this context, microbial agents corresponding to bioprotective cultures, fermentates, culture-free supernatant or purified molecules, exhibiting antifungal activities represent a growing interest as an alternative to chemical preservation. This review presents the main fungal spoilers encountered in food products, the antifungal microorganisms tested for food bioprotection, and their mechanisms of action. A focus is made in particular on the recent in situ studies and the constraints associated with the use of antifungal microbial agents for food biopreservation.
