Abstract
Essential oil-based products with broad plant disease control claims are commercially available and may be a practical alternative to copper fungicides for crop protection in organic mango orchards. We evaluated the disease control efficacy and crop safety of thyme oil, savory oil, and tree tea oil through replicated in vitro, in vivo (detached leaf and potted trees), and field assays. Three Colletotrichum species associated with mango anthracnose were tested in vitro, whereas only C. siamense was used for in vivo assays. Within the range of concentrations tested in vitro (62.5 to 2,000 μl active ingredient [a.i.]/liter), thyme and savory oil displayed fungicidal activity, whereas no fungistatic or fungicidal activity was observed with tea tree oil. In the in vivo assays, none of the treatments based on a preventive application rate of thyme (1,150 μl a.i./liter), savory (2,000 μl a.i./liter), or tea tree oil (342 μl a.i./liter) were effective in preventing the development of anthracnose on wounded and artificially inoculated leaves. Although field applications of thyme or tea tree oil did not result in phytotoxicity or negative impacts on fruit yield, they were ineffective in reducing the incidence and severity of naturally occurring anthracnose. Applications of copper hydroxide approved for organic agriculture were effective in controlling anthracnose in the field, and no added benefits were found by premixing this compound with thyme oil. Results indicate that essential oil products based on thyme or tea tree oil are inefficient at controlling anthracnose in mangoes.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions are a promising alternative for essential oil incorporation into active coatings. The influence of the preparation steps order on nanoemulsions' physical properties is still little explored. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the sequence of preparation steps and of the oil and polymer concentration on the stability, physical properties, and antifungal activity of alginate-based cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsions. The nanoemulsions were produced by two strategies: (I) preparation directly into an alginate solution (Ultra-Turrax at 10,000 rpm for 5 min + Ultrasound 150 W for 3 min); and (II) preparation in water (Ultra-Turrax at 10,000 rpm for 5 min + Ultrasound 150 W for 3 min) followed by homogenization with a sodium alginate solution (Ultra-Turrax at 10,000 rpm for 1, 3 or 5 min). The nanoemulsion prepared by the second strategy showed better stability, physical properties, and antifungal activity. In general, the presence of alginate hindered the cavitation effects of ultrasound, leading to the increase of droplets size and consequently affecting emulsions stability, turbidity, and antifungal properties.

Abstract
Penicillium digitatum is a major postharvest pathogen that threatens the global citrus fruit industry and causes great economic losses annually. In the present study, inhibitory properties of cinnamon bark oil (CBO) against P. digitatum in vitro were investigated. Results indicated that 0.03% CBO could efficiently inhibit the spore germination, germ tube elongation, mycelial growth, colonial expansion and conidial accumulation of P. digitatum. The results of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and MitoTraker Orange (MTO) staining also proved the suppression effects of CBO against P. digitatum. Meanwhile, CBO could inhibit green mold rots induced by P. digitatum in citrus fruit when the working concentration of CBO exceeded 0.06%. In addition, the expressions of 12 genes critical for the growth and virulence of P. digitatum were also significantly regulated under CBO stress. Through a transcriptomic analysis, a total of 1802 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in P. digitatum after 4 h and 8 h of CBO treatment. Most of the DEG products were associated with carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism. They directly or indirectly led to the disturbance of the membrane and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our results may deepen the understanding of antifungal properties of CBO against P. digitatum and provide the theoretical foundation to uncover the antifungal mechanism of CBO at the molecular level.

Abstract
AIMS Citrus limon (lemon) is a widely cultivated citrus fruit. Significant postharvest losses due to fungi plague its production. Environmental and human health hazards have made the application of synthetic fungicides unsuitable. Despite the previous reports of antifungal activities of essential oil (EO) vapors, their synergistic combinations are understudied. Synergistic vapor combinations are advantageous due to less concentration of active components. This study aimed to isolate and identify postharvest fungal pathogens lemon and to evaluate the antifungal effects of synergistic Monarda citriodora EO (MEO)-constituent vapor combinations in vivo and in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS Postharvest fungal pathogens of lemon (C. limon) were isolated from various infected samples. The most pathogenic isolate was identified through morphology and its ITS-based rRNA gene sequencing as Aspergillus foetidus (O4). This is the first report of A. foetidus as a postharvest pathogen of lemon. The minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) of MEO vapors treatment against O4 were 1346.15 µL/L air. For carvacrol, hexanal, and linalool, MFC was same (96.16 µL/L air). Checkerboard assays demonstrated that 1/4 MFC of MEO (336.54 µL/L air) and 1/4 MFC of linalool (24.04 µL/L air) (M + L) were synergistic against O4. M + L vapors reduced the O4 growth on lemons during storage by 64% ± 1.50% and preserved their quality (low weight loss %, unchanged pH, increased ascorbic acid content). Propidium iodide staining, ergosterol content analysis, calcofluor white staining and chitin content analysis revealed the integrity loss of the O4 plasma membrane and cell wall. 2',7'-Dichlorofluorescin diacetate staining revealed accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis exposed the M + L treated mycelia with malformations. CONCLUSIONS M + L vapors offer protection for lemons from A. foetidus and preserve their quality during storage.

Abstract
Actinidia chinensis 'Hongyang', also known as red yangtao (red heart kiwifruit), is a vine fruit tree native to China possessing significant nutritional and economic value. However, information on its genetic diversity and phylogeny is still very limited. The first chloroplast (cp) genome of A. chinensis 'Hongyang' cultivated in China was sequenced using de novo technology in this study. A. chinensis 'Hongyang' possesses a cp genome that spans 156,267 base pairs (bp), exhibiting an overall GC content of 37.20%. There were 132 genes that were annotated, with 85 of them being protein-coding genes, 39 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 8 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. A total of 49 microsatellite sequences (SSRs) were detected, mainly single nucleotide repeats, mostly consisting of A or T base repeats. Compared with 14 other species, the cp genomes of A. chinensis 'Hongyang' were biased towards the use of codons containing A/U, and the non-protein coding regions in the A. chinensis 'Hongyang' cpDNA showed greater variation than the coding regions. The nucleotide polymorphism analysis (Pi) yielded nine highly variable region hotspots, most in the large single copy (LSC) region. The cp genome boundary analysis revealed a conservative order of gene arrangement in the inverted repeats (IRs) region of the cp genomes of 15 Actinidia plants, with small expansions and contractions of the boundaries. Furthermore, phylogenetic tree indicated that A. chinensis 'Hongyang' was the closest relative to A. indochinensis. This research provides a useful basis for future genetic and evolutionary studies of A. chinensis 'Hongyang', and enriches the biological information of Actinidia species.

Abstract
"Feicheng" peach is popular for its unique aroma, but its defect of being highly sensitive to chilling injury (CI) often leads to aroma loss and internal browning. Essential oils (EOs) are often used to enhance the antioxidant capacity of plants and fruits, as well as to trigger their defense against biotic/abiotic stresses. This study aimed to examine the effect of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) vapor treatment on the aroma quality of peach fruit during cold storage using HS-GC-IMS. The results showed that 50 μL/L CEO vapor reduced the severity of internal browning (IB) in peaches at the stage of 7 ~ 21 d during refrigeration (Significantly, the L* value was higher and the IB index was lower than that of control, p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the evident reduction or loss of aroma content caused by CI was restored to a higher level than the control (p < 0.05). Furthermore, CEO treatment promoted the release of aroma-related volatiles as evidenced by more propyl acetate, and the dimer of amyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, butyl acetate detected than that on harvest day and no-treated group after 21 d of cold storage plus 2 d of shelf life. Genes of PpLOX1, PpLOX2, PpHPL1 and PpADH1 associated with aroma-related volatile biosynthesis revealed higher transcript abundance in peach fruits treated with CEO than the control (p < 0.05). Overall, our study demonstrated that CEO in vapor phase may be beneficial to alleviate the quality deterioration in aroma and flesh color of "Feicheng" peaches caused by CI, which lays a theoretical reference for maintaining postharvest quality of peach fruits.

Abstract
Chinese yam with damaged outer skin can be easily oxidized and infected by spoilage fungi. To find preservatives in the storage of the Chinese yam, Aspergillus niger 103 was isolated, identified, and determined as the dominant spoilage fungus in Chinese yam according to Koch’s postulates. Then, the strain was used as a model to screen antifungal agents and study antifungal mechanisms in this study. We found that cinnamon essential oil was the best antifungal agent, and the minimum concentration against Aspergillus niger 103 was 25 μg/mL. The storage life of Chinese yam could significantly extend by 27.66 days by spraying with cinnamon essential oil (25 μg/mL). To further explore the antifungal mechanism of cinnamon essential oil against Aspergillus niger 103, alkaline phosphatase activity and electrolyte content in the fungal solution were measured. The alkaline phosphatase activity and electrolyte content of the fungal solution with cinnamon essential oil were significantly increased than those without cinnamon essential oil, which showed that the cinnamon essential oil could destroy the integrity of the cell wall and cell membrane of Aspergillus niger 103, and disrupted cellular homeostasis of Aspergillus niger 103.

Thymol Edible Coating Controls Postharvest Anthracnose by Regulating the Synthesis Pathway of Okra Lignin. Foods 2023; 12:foods12020395. Abstract
Okra has received extensive attention due to its high nutritional value and remarkable functional characteristics, but postharvest diseases have severely limited its application. It is important to further explore the methods and potential methods to control the postharvest diseases of okra. In this study, Colletotrichum fioriniae is the major pathogen that causes okra anthracnose, which can be isolated from naturally decaying okra. The pathogenicity of C. fioriniae against okra was preliminarily verified, and the related biological characteristics were explored. At the same time, an observational study was conducted to investigate the in vitro antifungal effect of thymol edible coating (TKL) on C. fioriniae. After culturing at 28 °C for 5 days, it was found that TKL showed an obvious growth inhibition effect on C. fioriniae. The concentration for 50% of the maximal effect was 95.10 mg/L, and the minimum inhibitory concentration was 1000 mg/L. In addition, it was found that thymol edible coating with a thymol concentration of 100 mg/L (TKL100) may cause different degrees of damage to the cell membrane, cell wall, and metabolism of C. fioriniae, thereby inhibiting the growth of hyphae and causing hyphal rupture. Refer to the results of the in vitro bacteriostatic experiment. Furthermore, the okra was sprayed with TKL100. It was found that the TKL100 coating could significantly inhibit the infection of C. fioriniae to okra, reduce the rate of brown spots and fold on the okra surface, and inhibit mycelium growth. In addition, the contents of total phenols and flavonoids of okra treated with TKL100 were higher than those of the control group. Meanwhile, the activities of phenylalaninammo-nialyase, cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase, and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase in the lignin synthesis pathway were generally increased, especially after 6 days in a 28 °C incubator. The lignin content of TKL-W was the highest, reaching 65.62 ± 0.68 mg/g, which was 2.24 times of that of CK-W. Therefore, TKL may promote the synthesis of total phenols and flavonoids in okra, then stimulate the activity of key enzymes in the lignin synthesis pathway, and finally regulate the synthesis of lignin in okra. Thus, TKL could have a certain controlling effect on okra anthracnose.

Abstract
Strawberries and raspberries are susceptible to physiological and biological damage. Due to the consumer concern about using pesticides to control fruit rot, recent attention has been drawn to essential oils. Microbiological activity evaluations of different concentrations of tested EOs (cinnamon, clove, bergamot, rosemary and lemon; 10% DMSO-PBS solution was used as a diluent) against fruit rot fungal strains and a fruit-born human pathogen (Escherichia coli) indicated that the highest inhibition halos was found for pure cinnamon and clove oils; according to GC-MS analysis, these activities were due to the high level of the bioactive compounds cinnamaldehyde (54.5%) in cinnamon oil and eugenol (83%) in clove oil. Moreover, thermogravimetric evaluation showed they were thermally stable, with temperature peak of 232.0 °C for cinnamon and 200.6/234.9 °C for clove oils. Antibacterial activity evaluations of all tested EOs at concentrations from 5-50% (v/v) revealed a concentration of 10% (v/v) to be the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration. The physicochemical analysis of fruits in an in vivo assay indicated that used filter papers doped with 10% (v/v) of cinnamon oil (stuck into the lids of plastic containers) were able to increase the total polyphenols and antioxidant activity in strawberries after four days, with it being easier to preserve strawberries than raspberries.

Abstract
Post-harvest diseases can be a huge problem for the tropical fruit sector. These fruits are generally consumed in natura; thus, their integrity and appearance directly affect commercialization and consumer desire. Anthracnose is caused by fungi of the genus Colletotrichum and affects tropical fruits, resulting in lesions that impair their appearance and consumption. Antifungals generally used to treat anthracnose can be harmful to human health, as well as to the environment. Therefore, essential oils (EO) have been investigated as natural biofungicides, successfully controlling anthracnose symptoms. The hydrophobicity, high volatility, and oxidative instability of essential oils limit their direct application; hence, these oils must be stabilized before food application. Distinct delivery systems have already been proposed to protect/stabilize EOs, and nanotechnology has recently reshaped the food application limits of EOs. This review presents robust data regarding nanotechnology application and EO antifungal properties, providing new perspectives to further improve the results already achieved in the treatment of anthracnose. Additionally, it evaluates the current scenario involving the application of EO directly or incorporated in films and coatings for anthracnose treatment in tropical fruits, which is of great importance, especially for those fruits intended for exportation that may have a prolonged shelf life.

Abstract
Food safety and health are the themes of today's society. As a class of foodborne pathogens, Salmonella enteritidis has become one of the common zoonotic pathogens. Because chemical preservatives have certain harmfulness and have been questioned, it is particularly important to find green and safe natural preservatives. The advantages of plant essential oils (EOs) are that they are green and safe, have a wide range of antibacterials, and are not easy to form drug resistance. In recent years, studies have found that EOs have excellent antibacterial activity, but their antibacterial mechanism has not been conclusive, which has certain limitations in their application in the food field. Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) extracted from dried cinnamon is a secondary metabolite of cells and a very important natural food flavor. More importantly, it is non-toxic to the human body and has been proven to have a good antibacterial effect, but its antibacterial mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, it was of great practical significance to carry out the research on the antibacterial mechanism of CEO on S. enteritidis. In this work, S. enteritidis was used as the test bacteria, and CEO was selected as the antibacterial agent to study the antibacterial mechanisms. By studying the physiological metabolism of S. enteritidis cells by CEO, the influence of CEO on the bacteriostatic mechanism of S. enteritidis was systematically elucidated. The study found that CEO treatment would reduce the activity of bacterial metabolism. It is mainly reflected in the following three aspects: first, the activity of key enzymes in TCA circulation is inhibited, thus affecting the respiration of S. enteritidis. Second, it affects the level of energy metabolism by inhibiting the content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the activity of ATPase. Finally, it can affect the physiological metabolism of bacteria by inhibiting the metabolism of proteins and other substances. Therefore, this article was expected to provide a theoretical basis for the development of new natural food preservatives and the prevention and control of S. enteritidis.

Abstract
Salmonella is an important pathogen causing food poisoning. Food safety and health are the themes of today′s society. As a class of food-borne pathogens, Salmonella enteritidis had become one of the common zoonotic pathogens. Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) had been reported as an antibacterial agent, but there are few studies on its antibacterial mechanism. This study investigated the effects of CEO on oxidative damage and outer membrane protein genes of Salmonella enteritidis cells. First, the reactive oxygen species content in bacteria treated with different concentrations of cinnamon essential oil was determined by fluorescence spectrophotometry, and the effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) were determined by the kit method. The activity of POD and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) were investigated to investigate the oxidative damage of CEO to Salmonella enteritidis cells. By analyzing the effect of CEO on the Salmonella enteritidis cell membrane’s outer membrane protein gene expression, the mechanism of CEO′s action on the Salmonella enteritidis cell membrane was preliminarily discussed. The results showed that CEO treatment had an obvious oxidative damaging effect on Salmonella enteritidis. Compared with the control group, the increase in CEO concentration caused a significant increase in the bacteria ROS content. The observation technique experiment found that with the increase in CEO concentration, the number of stained cells increased, which indicated that CEO treatment would increase the ROS level in the cells, and it would also increase with the increase in CEO concentration, thus causing the oxidation of cells and damage. In addition, CEO treatment also caused the disruption of the balance of the cellular antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, POD) system, resulting in an increase in the content of MDA, a membrane lipid metabolite, and increased protein carbonylation, which ultimately inhibited the growth of Salmonella enteritidis. The measurement results of cell membrane protein gene expression levels showed that the Omp genes to be detected in Salmonella enteritidis were all positive, which indicated that Salmonella enteritidis carried these four genes. Compared with the control group, the relative expressions of OmpF, OmpA and OmpX in the CEO treatment group were significantly increased (p < 0.05), which proved that the cell function was disturbed. Therefore, the toxicity of CEO to Salmonella enteritidis could be attributed to the damage of the cell membrane and the induction of oxidative stress at the same time. It was speculated that the antibacterial mechanism of CEO was the result of multiple effects. This work was expected to provide a theoretical basis for the development of new natural food preservatives and the prevention and control of Salmonella enteritidis.

Abstract
Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen that commonly causes nosocomial blood infections in the immunocompromised. Several factors make this pathogen a global threat, including its misidentification as closely related species, its ability to survive for weeks on fomites, and its resistance to commonly prescribed antifungal drugs, sometimes to all three classes of systemic antifungal drugs. These factors demonstrate a need for the development of novel therapeutic approaches to combat this pathogen. In the present study, the antifungal activities of 21 essential oils were tested against C. auris. Several essential oils were observed to inhibit the growth and kill C. auris, Candida lusitaniae, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae when in direct contact and at concentrations considered safe for topical use. The most effective essential oils were those extracted from lemongrass, clove bud, and cinnamon bark. These essential oils also elicited antifungal activity in gaseous form. The efficacies of formulations comprised of these three essential oils in combination with fluconazole, amphotericin B, flucytosine, and micafungin were explored. While synergism was neither observed with cinnamon bark oil nor any of the antifungal drugs, lemongrass oil displayed synergistic, additive, and indifferent interactions with select drugs. Formulations of clove bud oil with amphotericin B resulted in antagonistic interactions but displayed synergistic interactions with fluconazole and flucytosine. These essential oils and their combinations with antifungal drugs may provide useful options for surface disinfection, skin sanitization, and possibly even the treatment of Candida infections.

Abstract
Kiwifruit is loved by consumers for its unique taste and rich vitamin C content. Kiwifruit are very sensitive to adverse soil environments owing to fleshy and shallow roots, which limits the uptake of water and nutrients into the root system, resulting in low yield and poor fruit quality. Lateral roots are the key organs for plants to absorb water and nutrients. Improving water and fertilizer use efficiency by promoting lateral root development is a feasible method to improve yield and quality. Expansin proteins plays a major role in lateral root growth; hence, it is important to identify expansin protein family members, screen key genes, and explore gene function in root development. In this study, 41 expansin genes were identified based on the genome of kiwifruit (‘Hongyang’, Actinidia chinensis). By clustering with the Arabidopsis thaliana expansin protein family, the 41 AcExpansin proteins were divided into four subfamilies. The AcExpansin protein family was further analysed by bioinformatics methods and was shown to be evolutionarily diverse and conserved at the DNA and protein levels. Based on previous transcriptome data and quantitative real-time PCR assays, we screened the candidate gene AcEXPA23. Overexpression of AcEXPA23 in kiwifruit increased the number of kiwifruit lateral roots.

Abstract
Anthracnose is a severe disease caused by Colletotrichum spp. on several crop species. Fungal infections can occur both in the field and at the post-harvest stage causing severe lesions on fruits and economic losses. Physical treatments and synthetic fungicides have traditionally been the preferred means to control anthracnose adverse effects; however, the urgent need to decrease the use of toxic chemicals led to the investigation of innovative and sustainable protection techniques. Evidence for the efficacy of biological agents and vegetal derivates has been reported; however, their introduction into actual crop protection strategies requires the solutions of several critical issues. Biotechnology-based approaches have also been explored, revealing the opportunity to develop innovative and safe methods for anthracnose management through genome editing and RNA interference technologies. Nevertheless, besides the number of advantages related to their use, e.g., the putative absence of adverse effects due to their high specificity, a number of aspects remain to be clarified to enable their introduction into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols against Colletotrichum spp. disease.

Abstract
Avocadoes are a rich source of nutrients and nutraceuticals that preserve human health. Nevertheless, this fruit is susceptible to phytopathogen infection during the postharvest period causing severe economic losses. Herein, we report on the in situ antifungal assessment of biodegradable films impregnated with the essential oil of Cinnamomum verum (CvEO) as natural fungistatic coatings to extend postharvest quality of Hass avocadoes ( Persea americana cv. Hass). These coatings were evaluated on fruits previously infected with a native strain of Fusarium verticillioides . The cytotoxic assessment of CvEO on F. verticillioides revealed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.3 ± 0.0 g L -1 whereas its chemical profiling showed ( E )-cinnamaldehyde (45.9 %) 1,3,8- p -menthatriene (7.9 %) and linalool (6.8 %) as the major bioactive compounds. Four coatings (FC1-FC4) were made using chitosan (1 %) and a diverse quantity of CvEO (0.4-1.3 % w/v). The physicochemical properties demonstrated that the films FC3 and FC4 have the optimal characteristics of a food coating. Avocadoes preserved with the films FC3 and FC4 substantially kept (p < 0.01) fruit firmness and the nutraceutical content of infected avocados at least for 21 d. The results of the present investigation suggest that our hybrid materials are able to conserve basic nutritional parameters such as fiber, protein, reducing sugars, as well as the content of unsaturated fatty acids which are the main nutraceuticals of this fruit.

Abstract
Botryosphaeria dothidea is a major pathogen responsible for postharvest kiwifruit soft rot. This study aimed to determine the influence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on postharvest resistance to kiwifruit soft rot and the antifungal role of H2S against B. dothidea. The results indicated that H2S (20 μl L-1) restricted the lesion area following inoculation with B. dothidea. H2S enhanced the production of shikimic acid, tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine while also increasing the total phenols, flavonoids, and lignin. H2S upregulated the expression of AcDHQS, AcSDH, AcSK, AcPAL, AcCAD, and AcCHS. Additionally, sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS)-released H2S inhibited mycelial growth. NaHS concentrations of 20 and 40 mmol L-1 significantly decreased the mycelial weight and malondialdehyde content (MDA) content while increasing cell membrane conductivity and membrane leakage. The results indicate that H2S induces resistance in kiwifruit via a microbicidal role and amino acid metabolism involved in postharvest kiwifruit disease resistance.

Sensitivity Testing of Natural Antifungal Agents on Fusarium fujikuroi to Investigate the Potential for Sustainable Control of Kiwifruit Leaf Spot Disease. J Fungi (Basel) 2022; 8:jof8030239. Abstract
Kiwifruit is a nutritious and economically important fruit that is widely cultivated in China. In 2021, leaf spot disease of kiwifruit was discovered in the main kiwifruit-producing area of Xifeng County, Guizhou Province, China. Leaf spot disease weakens plant photosynthesis and reduces nutrient synthesis, thereby affecting plant growth. We studied the morphological characteristics and performed a combined analysis of EF-1α, RPB2, and TUB2 genes of Fusarium fujikuroi, a fungus associated with leaf spot disease. The pathogenicity of F. fujikuroi followed Koch’s hypothesis, confirming that this fungus is the cause of kiwifruit leaf spot disease. The sensitivity of seven natural antifungal agents against F. fujikuroi was measured using the mycelial growth rate method. Honokiol, cinnamaldehyde, and osthol showed good antifungal effects against F. fujikuroi, with EC50 values of 18.50, 64.60, and 64.86 μg/mL, respectively. The regression coefficient of cinnamaldehyde was the largest at 2.23, while that of honokiol was the smallest at 0.408. Fusarium fujikuroi was the most sensitive to cinnamaldehyde.

Abstract
In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to food safety and organic horticulture. Thus, people are looking for natural products to manage plant diseases, pests, and weeds. Essential oils (EOs) or EO-based products are potentially promising candidates for biocontrol agents due to their safe, bioactive, biodegradable, ecologically, and economically viable properties. Born of necessity or commercial interest to satisfy market demand for natural products, this emerging technology is highly anticipated, but its application has been limited without the benefit of a thorough analysis of the scientific evidence on efficacy, scope, and mechanism of action. This review covers the uses of EOs as broad-spectrum biocontrol agents in both preharvest and postharvest systems. The known functions of EOs in suppressing fungi, bacteria, viruses, pests, and weeds are briefly summarized. Related results and possible modes of action from recent research are listed. The weaknesses of applying EOs are also discussed, such as high volatility and low stability, low water solubility, strong influence on organoleptic properties, and phytotoxic effects. Therefore, EO formulations and methods of incorporation to enhance the strengths and compensate for the shortages are outlined. This review also concludes with research directions needed to better understand and fully evaluate EOs and provides an outlook on the prospects for future applications of EOs in organic horticulture production.

Abstract
The world population growth has raised concerns about food security. Agricultural systems are asked to satisfy a growing demand for food with increasingly limited resources, and simultaneously still must reduce the impacts on the environment. This scenario encourages the search for safe and sustainable production strategies. Reducing losses in the production process can be one of the main ways to guarantee food safety. In fruticulture, it is estimated that more than 50% of the production can be lost between harvest and the final consumer due to postharvest diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi. The fungi of the genus Colletotrichum are opportunistic and are associated with several diseases, being the anthracnose the most relevant in terms of the quality and yield losses in fruit species around worldwide. To control these diseases, the use of synthetic fungicides has been the main instrument utilized, however, because of their phytotoxicity to human health, the environment, and strong selection pressure imposed by continuous applications, the fungicides have caused resistance in the pathogen populations. So reducing the excessive application of these products is indispensable for human health and for sustainable Agriculture. Towards this purpose, research has been carried out to identify the phytopathological potentiality of essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants. Therefore, this review aims to contribute to the formation of knowledge bases, about the discoveries, recent advances, and the use of EOs as a strategy to alternatively control fungal disease caused by Colletotrichum spp. in postharvest fruits. Here, we provide valuable information exploring the application potential of essential oils as commercially useful biorational pesticides for food preservation, contributing to sustainable production and global food security.

Abstract
Microorganisms produce various secondary metabolites for growth and survival. During iron stress, they produce secondary metabolites termed siderophores. In the current investigation, antifungal activity of catecholate siderophore produced by Escherichia coli has been assessed against Aspergillus nidulans. Exogenous application of the bacterial siderophore to fungal cultures resulted in decreased colony size, increased filament length, and changes in hyphal branching pattern. Growth inhibition was accompanied with increased intracellular iron content. Scanning electron microscopy revealed dose-dependent alteration in fungal morphology. Fluorescent staining by propidium iodide revealed cell death in concert with growth inhibition with increasing siderophore concentration. Antioxidative enzyme activity was also compromised with significant increase in catalase activity and decrease in ascorbate peroxidase activity. Siderophore-treated cultures showed increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species as observed by fluorescence microscopy and enhanced membrane damage in terms of malondialdehyde content. Antifungal property might thus be attributed to xenosiderophore-mediated iron uptake leading to cell death. STRING analysis showed interaction of MirB (involved in transport of hydroxamate siderophore) and MirA (involved in transport of catecholate siderophore), confirming the possibility of uptake of iron-xenosiderophore complex through fungal transporters. MirA structure was modeled and validated with 95% residues occurring in the allowed region. In silico analysis revealed MirA-Enterobactin-Fe3+ complex formation. Thus, the present study reveals a promising antifungal agent in the form of catecholate siderophore and supports involvement of MirA fungal receptors in xenosiderophore uptake.

Abstract
The antifungal activity of postharvest kiwifruit against the pathogen Botryosphaeria dothidea was evaluated for 33 essential oil monomers. The possible mechanism for the known active compounds were further assessed in this study. The results show all the EO components exhibit inhibitory effects on the pathogen to different degrees except for Farnesol. Carbon chain length and C2-C3 double bonds had a great effect on the antifungal activities of aldehydes. Of all of these, carvacrol had the strongest antifungal activity with EC50 of 12.58 μL/L and EC90 of 22.08 μL/L. Carvacrol also exhibits significant inhibitory effects on the pathogen, both in vivo and in vitro. Carvacrol evidently alters the hyphal morphology of B. dothidea and severely damages cell membrane and inhibits the formation of lipid components on the membrane. As cell membrane permeability increases, intracellular homeostasis including ion and biomacromolecules were destroyed by carvacrol. Furthermore, carvacrol appears to significantly inhibit mitochondrial activity and respiration rates, resulting in cell death of B. dothidea. Our results provide evidence that carvacrol could be a very useful compound for controlling postharvest rot soft in kiwifruit.

Abstract
Anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum spp. makes heavy losses for post-harvest mangoes of Cat Hoa Loc variety during storage, packaging, and transportation. The synthetic fungicides are commonly used to control the disease, but they are not safe for consumers’ health and environment. This study was aimed to investigate the use of essential oils (EOs) as the safe alternative control. Pathogen was isolated from the infected Cat Hoa Loc mangoes and identified by morphology and DNA sequencing of the ITS region. Six EOs (cinnamon, basil, lemongrass, peppermint, coriander, and orange) were chemically analyzed by GC–MS. The antifungal activity of EOs was studied in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that the isolated pathogen was Colletotrichum acutatum. Cinnamon, basil, and lemongrass EOs effectively inhibited the growth of C. acutatum in descending order of cinnamon, basil, and lemongrass. However, they (except basil oil) severely damaged fruit peels. The antifungal activity was closely related to the main compounds of EOs. Basil EOs effectively controlled anthracnose development on Cat Hoa Loc mangoes artificially infected with C. acutatum, and its effectiveness was comparable to that of fungicide treatment. Consequently, basil EOs can be used as a biocide to control anthracnose on post-harvest Cat Hoa Loc mangoes.

Abstract
In this study, the chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) of Origanum vulgare was characterized, and the antifungal activity of the EO and some individual components against Botrytis cinerea (Y-BC-1) was determined. Twenty-one components were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection, constituting 95.7% of the EO. The major components were methyleugenol (16.5%), myristicin (15.6%), carvacrol (15.0%), thymol (9.8%), apioline (9.4%), and (Z)-β-farnesene (8.7%). B. cinerea in vitro mycelial growth and spore germination were strongly inhibited by the EO and two of its main components, thymol and carvacrol. In vivo vapor contact assays, the antifungal activity of the EO at 250 mg/L suppressed the decay of cherry tomatoes 96.39%. Moreover, thymol and carvacrol at 125 mg/L completely suppressed the gray mold. Thus, the EO of O. vulgare is a potentially nontoxic and ecofriendly botanical fungicide for postharvest control of gray mold.

Abstract
Citral is an aliphatic aldehyde extracted from citrus essential oil. The aim of the study was to examine how citral treatment affects the weight loss, firmness, respiration, and ripening index, as well as the antioxidant capacity of kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis cv. ‘Jinkui’). The citral treatment was seen to reduce the weight loss, softening, and fruit respiration compared to control fruits. Citral treatment also had an inhibitory effect on ripening index, O2•− production rate, and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation. The degradations of ascorbic acid (AsA) content, total flavonoids content (TFC), and total phenolics content (TPC) were also suppressed by citral. In contrast, citral treatment induces the activation of antioxidant enzyme system such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT). Collectively, the results indicated that citral treatment delays postharvest senescence and prolongs storage life by enhancing antioxidant capacity in harvested kiwifruits. These findings suggest that citral has the potential to be used as a promising natural preservative for the extension of postharvest quality in harvested kiwifruit.

Abstract
Penicillium expansum is a major postharvest pathogen that mainly threatens the global pome fruit industry and causes great economic losses annually. In the present study, the antifungal effects and potential mechanism of cinnamon oil against P. expansum were investigated. Results indicated that 0.25 mg L−1 cinnamon oil could efficiently inhibit the spore germination, conidial production, mycelial accumulation, and expansion of P. expansum. In addition, it could effectively control blue mold rots induced by P. expansum in apples. Cinnamon oil could also reduce the expression of genes involved in patulin biosynthesis. Through a proteomic quantitative analysis, a total of 146 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) involved in the carbohydrate metabolic process, most of which were down-regulated, were noticed for their large number and functional significance. Meanwhile, the expressions of 14 candidate genes corresponding to DEPs and the activities of six key regulatory enzymes (involving in cellulose hydrolyzation, Krebs circle, glycolysis, and pentose phosphate pathway) showed a similar trend in protein levels. In addition, extracellular carbohydrate consumption, intracellular carbohydrate accumulation, and ATP production of P. expansum under cinnamon oil stress were significantly decreased. Basing on the correlated and mutually authenticated results, we speculated that disturbing the fungal carbohydrate metabolic process would be partly responsible for the inhibitory effects of cinnamon oil on P. expansum growth. The findings would provide new insights into the antimicrobial mode of cinnamon oil.

Abstract
Forchlorfenuron, N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea (CPPU), is often used to promote fruit growth and improve production. The role of CPPU in kiwifruit growth has been established. However, the correlation between fruit weight and nutritional metabolism during development after CPPU treatments remains largely undetermined. Here, we surveyed the variations in weight and nutrient components of the 'Hongyang' kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) when CPPU was sprayed on fruit 25 days after anthesis. The CPPU application did not significantly influence the dry matter, soluble solids, starch, vitamin C or protein concentrations. However, the fresh weight, length and maximum diameter were significantly increased compared with the control. Moreover, in fruit of the same developmental stage, the fructose, glucose and soluble sugar levels increased after the CPPU treatment, compared with the control. On the contrary, citric, quinic and titratable acid concentrations decreased. However, a correlation analysis between fresh weight and the nutritional contents revealed that CPPU did not affect the concentrations of the most abundant organic acids (quinic and citric) and sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose), compared with control fruit of the same weight. Therefore, CPPU applications enhance 'Hongyang' kiwifruit weight/size. However, there were no significant differences in the nutritional qualities of treated and untreated fruit having the same weights.

Abstract
La actividad antifúngica del quitosano, aceites esenciales (canela y eucalipto) y su combinación fueron evaluadas contra dos patógenos Colletotrichum acutatum y Colletotrichum gloeosporioides aislados de aguacate (Persea americana Mill). Se utilizó quitosano a diferentes concentraciones (0.1, 0.5 y 1.0%). Las concentraciones de aceites esenciales evaluadas fueron 0.1, 0.5 y 2.0% (eucalipto y canela). El efecto de la combinación del quitosano con los aceites esenciales se evaluó utilizando las concentraciones más eficaces del quitosano (0.1 y 0.5%) y el aceite esencial de eucalipto y canela con el mayor efecto inhibitorio (2%). Los tratamientos de quitosano y aceites esenciales cada uno por separado fueron parcialmente efectivos para evitar el desarrollo de las cepas evaluadas, inhibiendo el crecimiento micelial en un rango de 17 a 21% y 18 a 50% respectivamente. Por lo contrario, el crecimiento micelial de ambas cepas fue totalmente reducido mediante la aplicación combinada del quitosano (0.1%) con aceite esencial de canela (2%), sin embargo; la combinación del quitosano con aceite esencial de eucalipto no fue efectiva. Hasta donde sabemos, esta investigación es la primera que informa sobre cepas de Colletotrichum resistentes al quitosano aisladas de frutos de aguacate.

Abstract
Penicillium italicum causes blue mold disease and leads to huge economic losses in citrus production. As a natural antifungal agent, clove essential oil (CEO), which is a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) substance, shows strong in vitro activity against fungal pathogens. However, few studies on CEO for controlling postharvest blue mold disease caused by P. italicum in citrus fruit have been reported. Our aims were to investigate the control efficacy and possible mechanisms involved of CEO against P. italicum. In the present study, CEO treatment inhibited the disease development of blue mold when applied at 0.05% to 0.8% (v/v), and with the effective concentration being obtained as 0.4% (v/v). Besides its direct antifungal activity, CEO treatment also spurred a rapid accumulation of H2O2 compared with untreated fruits, which might contribute to enhancing an increase in the activities of defense-related enzymes, such as β-1,3-glucanase (β-Glu), chitinase (CHI), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and lipoxygenase (LOX) in citrus fruit. Results of real time-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed that the gene expressions of β-Glu, CHI, PAL, POD and PPO were up-regulated in CEO-treated fruits. At the same time, CEO treatment led to down-regulated expression of the LOX gene in citrus fruit. Clove essential oil effectively control the disease incidence of blue mold decay in citrus fruit by motivating the host-defense responses, suppressing the malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation while enhancing the activities and gene expressions of defense-related enzymes. Our study provides an alternative preservative applying CEO to reduce postharvest fungal decay in citrus fruit.

Abstract
Aspergillus flavus and A. parsiticus produce aflatoxins that are highly toxic to mammals and birds. In this study, the inhibitory effects of 1,8-cineole and t-cinnamaldehyde were examined on the growth of Aspergillus flavus ATCC 22546 and aflatoxin production. 1,8-Cineole showed 50% inhibition of fungal growth at a concentration of 250 ppm, while t-cinnamaldehyde almost completely inhibited fungal growth at a concentration of 50 ppm. Furthermore, no fungal growth was observed when the growth medium was treated with 100 ppm t-cinnamaldehyde. 1,8-Cineole also exhibited 50% inhibition on the production of aflatoxin B1 and aflatoxin B2 at a concentration of 100 ppm, while the addition of 100 ppm t-cinnamaldehyde completely inhibited aflatoxin production. These antiaflatoxigenic activities were related to a dramatic downregulation of the expression of aflE and aflL by 1,8-cineole, but the mode of action for t-cinnamaldehyde was unclear. Collectively, our results suggest that both of the compounds are promising alternatives to the currently used disinfectant, propionic acid, for food and feedstuff preservation.
