Natural Extracellular Electron Transfer Between Semiconducting Minerals and Electroactive Bacterial Communities Occurred on the Rock Varnish

Plasticizers inhibit food waste anaerobic digestion performance by affecting microbial succession and metabolism

The widely existed plastic additives plasticizers in organic wastes possibly pose negative influences on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance, the direct evidence about the effects of plasticizers on AD performance is still lacking. This study evaluated the influencing mechanism of two typical plasticizers bisphenol A (BPA) and dioctyl phthalate on the whole AD process. Results indicated that plasticizers addition inhibited methane production, and the inhibiting effects were reinforced with the increase of concentration. By contrast, 50 mg/L BPA exhibited the strongest inhibition on methane production. Physicochemical analysis showed plasticizers inhibited the metabolism efficiency of soluble polysaccharide and volatile fatty acids. Microbial communities analyses suggested that plasticizers inhibited the direct interspecies electron transfer participators of methanogenic archaea (especially Methanosarcina) and syntrophic bacteria. Furthermore, plasticizers inhibited the methane metabolisms, key coenzymes (CoB, CoM, CoF420 and methanofuran) biosynthesis and the metabolisms of major organic matters. This study shed light on the effects of plasticizers on AD performance and provided new insights for assessing the influences of plasticizers or plastic additives on the disposal of organic wastes.

Use of magnetic powder to effectively improve the denitrification employing the activated sludge fermentation liquid as carbon source

Nitrogen removal is often limited in municipal wastewater treatment due to the lack of sufficient carbon source. Utilizing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation broth as a carbon source is an ideal alternative to reduce the cost for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and improve denitrification efficiency simultaneously. In this study, an anaerobic system was applied for simultaneous denitrification and WAS fermentation and the addition of magnetic microparticles (MMP) were confirmed to enhance both denitrification and WAS fermentation. Firstly, the addition of MMP increased the nitrate reduction rate by over 25.36% and improve the production of N2. Additionally, the equivalent chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the detected VFAs increased by 7.06%-14.53%, suggesting that MMP promoted the WAS fermentation. The electron transfer efficiency of denitrifies was accelerated by MMP via electron-transporting system (ETS) activity and cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, which might result in the promotional denitrification and WAS fermentation performance. Furthermore, the high-throughput sequencing displayed that, MMP enriched key microbes capable of degrading the complex organics (Chloroflexi, Synergistota and Spirochaetota) as well as the typical denitrifies (Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17 and Denitratisoma). Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy to realize simultaneous WAS utilization and denitrification for WWTPs.

The degradation of high emulsified oil wastewater in an intermittently-aerated MBBR packed with magnetic polystyrene particles

This work aims to explore the effects of the magnetic polystyrene particles (MPS) on contaminants removal of the high emulsified oil wastewater. 26 days intermittently-aerated progress illustrated that COD removal efficiency and the resistance to the shock loading was promoted in the presence of MPS. Gas chromatography (GC) results also indicated that MPS enhanced the number of organic species reduced. According to the cyclic voltammetry test, conductive MPS appeared special redox performance which was considered could to facilitate the extracellular electron transfer. Furthermore, MPS dosing accelerated the electron-transporting system (ETS) activity by 24.91% compared the control. Based on the superior performance above, the conductivity of MPS is considered to be responsible for the enhanced organic removal efficiency. Moreover, the high-throughput sequencing displayed that electroactive Cloacibacterium and Acinetobacter accounted for a higher proportion in the MPS reactor. Additionally, Porphyrobacter and Dysgonomonas which were capable of degrading organics were also enriched more by MPS. To sum up, MPS is a promising additive to enhance the organic substances removal for the high emulsified oil wastewater.

Natural hematite as low-cost auxiliary material for improving soil remediation by in-situ microbial community

Microbial-mineral interaction has a broad application prospect in the field of environmental remediation of organic pollutants. However, the disadvantages of long repair cycle and low repair rate limit its industrial application. In this study, natural hematite was used as an auxiliary material for soil remediation in a bio-electrochemical system. It was found that the power density of soil microbial fuel cell (SMFC) system composed of 2.0 mm hematite was 2.889 mW/m2, which is 2.7 times compared with the blank group (1.068 mW/m2) in the particle size optimization experiment. A similarly increased power density (1.068 to 2.467 mW/m2) was observed when the hematite content changed from 0 to 20% in the concentration optimization experiment. Under 20% and 2.0-mm hematite condition, the phenol removal rate was closed to 99% after 7 days, which is 1.9-folds compared with blank control (53%). These results suggest that addition of hematite enhances soil porosity and conductivity, and increases the number of electron acceptors in soil. These findings inspire that this economic and abundant natural mineral is expected to be a potential auxiliary material in the field of soil organic pollutant purification, and expand the understanding of interactions between hematite and microorganisms in nature.

Fe(III) oxide microparticles modulate extracellular electron transfer in anodic biofilms dominated by bacteria of the Pelobacter genus

Exo-electrogenic microorganisms have been extensively studied for their ability to transfer electrons with solid surfaces using a large variety of metabolic pathways. Most of the studies on these microorganisms consist in the replacement of solid electron acceptors such as Fe(III) oxides found in nature by electrodes with the objective of generating harvestable current in devices such as microbial fuel cells. In this study we show how the presence of solid ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃) particles in the inoculum during bio-anode development influences extracellular electron transfer to the electrode. Amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA (V4-V5 region) show bacteria and archaea communities with a large predominance of the Pelobacter genus, which is known to be phylogenetically close to the Geobacter genus, regardless of the presence or absence of ferric oxide in the inoculum. Data indicate that the bacteria at the bio-anode surface can preferentially utilize solid ferric oxide as terminal electron acceptors instead of the anode, though extracellular electron transfer to the anode can be restored by removing the particles. Mixed inoculum commonly used to develop bioanodes may produce similar bacterial communities with divergent electrochemical responses due to the presence of alternate electron acceptors, with direct implications for microbial fuel cell performance.

Electroactive Bacteria in Natural Ecosystems and Their Applications in Microbial Fuel Cells for Bioremediation: A Review

Electroactive bacteria (EAB) are natural microorganisms (mainly Bacteria and Archaea) living in various habitats (e.g., water, soil, sediment), including extreme ones, which can interact electrically each other and/or with their extracellular environments. There has been an increased interest in recent years in EAB because they can generate an electrical current in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). MFCs rely on microorganisms able to oxidize organic matter and transfer electrons to an anode. The latter electrons flow, through an external circuit, to a cathode where they react with protons and oxygen. Any source of biodegradable organic matter can be used by EAB for power generation. The plasticity of electroactive bacteria in exploiting different carbon sources makes MFCs a green technology for renewable bioelectricity generation from wastewater rich in organic carbon. This paper reports the most recent applications of this promising technology for water, wastewater, soil, and sediment recovery. The performance of MFCs in terms of electrical measurements (e.g., electric power), the extracellular electron transfer mechanisms by EAB, and MFC studies aimed at heavy metal and organic contaminant bioremediationF are all described and discussed.

Biophotoelectrochemical process co-driven by dead microalgae and live bacteria

Anaerobic reduction processes in natural waters can be promoted by dead microalgae that have been attributed to nutrient substances provided by the decomposition of dead microalgae for other microorganisms. However, previous reports have not considered that dead microalgae may also serve as photosensitizers to drive microbial reduction processes. Here we demonstrate a photoelectric synergistic linkage between dead microalgae and bacteria capable of extracellular electron transfer (EET). Illumination of dead Raphidocelis subcapitata resulted in two-fold increase in the rate of anaerobic bioreduction by pure Geobacter sulfurreducens, suggesting that photoelectrons generated from the illuminated dead microalgae were transferred to the EET-capable microorganisms. Similar phenomena were observed in NO3- reduction driven by irradiated dead Chlorella vulgaris and living Shewanella oneidensis, and Cr(VI) reduction driven by irradiated dead Raphidocelis subcapitata and living Bacillus subtilis. Enhancement of bioreduction was also seen when the killed microalgae were illuminated in mixed-culture lake water, suggesting that EET-capable bacteria were naturally present and this phenomenon is common in post-bloom systems. The intracellular ferredoxin-NADP+-reductase is inactivated in the dead microalgae, allowing the production and extracellular transfer of photoelectrons. The use of mutant strains confirmed that the electron transport pathway requires multiheme cytochromes. Taken together, these results suggest a heretofore overlooked biophotoelectrochemical process jointly mediated by illumination of dead microalgae and live EET-capable bacteria in natural ecosystems, which may add an important component in the energetics of bioreduction phenomena particularly in microalgae-enriched environments.

Enhanced anaerobic digestion performance of food waste by zero-valent iron and iron oxides nanoparticles: Comparative analyses of microbial community and metabolism

The effects of zero-valent iron (ZVI) and iron oxides nanoparticles on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance of food waste (FW) were comparably clarified in this study. Results indicated that the nanoparticles supplement effectively enhanced the methane yields. As observed, these nanoparticles accelerated organics transformation and alleviated acidification process. Also, the enriched total methanogens and functional bacteria (e.g., Proteiniphilum) were consistent with the promotion of oxidative phosphorylation, citrate cycle, coenzymes biosynthesis and the metabolisms of amino acid, carbohydrate, methane. Additionally, these nanoparticles stimulated electron transfer potential via enriching syntrophic genera (e.g., Geobacter, Syntrophomonas), primary acetate-dependent methanogens (Methanosaeta, Methanosarcina) and related functions (pilus assembly protein, ferredoxins). By comparison, ZVI nanoparticle presented the excellent performance on methanogenesis. This study provides comprehensive understanding of the methanogenesis facilitated by ZVI and iron oxides nanoparticles through the enhancement of key microbes and microbial metabolisms, while ZVI is an excellent option for promoting the methane production.

Quantitative and Qualitative Changes in the Genetic Diversity of Bacterial Communities in Anaerobic Bioreactors with the Diatomaceous Earth/Peat Cell Carrier

This paper analyses the impact of the diatomaceous earth/peat (DEP; 3:1) microbial carrier on changes in the bacterial microbiome and the development of biofilm in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of confectionery waste, combined with digested sewage sludge as inoculum. The physicochemical properties of the carrier material are presented, with particular focus on its morphological and dispersion characteristics, as well as adsorption and thermal properties. In this respect, the DEP system was found to be a suitable carrier for both mesophilic and thermophilic AD. The evaluation of quantitative and qualitative changes in the genetic diversity of bacterial communities, carried out using next-generation sequencing (NGS), showed that the material has a modifying effect on the bacterial microbiome. While Actinobacteria was the most abundant cluster in the WF-control sample (WF—waste wafers), Firmicutes was the dominant cluster in the digested samples without the carrier (WF-dig.; dig.—digested) and with the carrier (WF + DEP). The same was true for the count of Proteobacteria, which decreased twofold during biodegradation in favor of Synergistetes. The Syntrophomonas cluster was identified as the most abundant genus in the two samples, particularly in WF + DEP. This information was supplemented by observations of morphological features of microorganisms carried out using fluorescence microscopy. The biodegradation process itself had a significant impact on changes in the microbiome of samples taken from anaerobic bioreactors, reducing its biodiversity. As demonstrated by the results of this innovative method, namely the BioFlux microfluidic flow system, the decrease in the number of taxa in the digested samples and the addition of DEP contributed to the microbial adhesion in the microfluidic system and the formation of a stable biofilm.

The Characterization of Microbiome and Interactions on Weathered Rocks in a Subsurface Karst Cave, Central China

Karst caves are a natural oligotrophic subsurface biosphere widely distributed in southern China. Despite the progress in bacterial and fungal diversity, the knowledge about interactions between bacteria, fungi, and minerals is still limited in caves. Hence, for the first time, we investigated the interaction between bacteria and fungi living on weathered rocks in the Heshang Cave via high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and ITS1 genes, and co-occurrence analysis. The mineral compositions of weathered rocks were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Bacterial communities were dominated by Actinobacteria (33.68%), followed by Alphaproteobacteria (8.78%), and Planctomycetia (8.73%). In contrast, fungal communities were dominated by Sordariomycetes (21.08%) and Dothideomycetes (14.06%). Mineral substrata, particularly phosphorus-bearing minerals, significantly impacted bacterial (hydroxyapatite) and fungal (fluorapatite) communities as indicated by the redundancy analysis. In comparison with fungi, the development of bacterial communities was more controlled by the environmental selection indicated by the overwhelming contribution of deterministic processes. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that all nodes were positively linked, indicating ubiquitous cooperation within bacterial groups and fungal groups, as well as between bacteria and fungi under oligotrophic conditions in the subsurface biosphere. In total, 19 bacterial ASVs and 34 fungal OTUs were identified as keystone taxa, suggesting the fundamental role of fungi in maintaining the microbial ecosystem on weathered rocks. Ascomycota was most dominant in keystone taxa, accounting for 26.42%, followed by Actinobacteria in bacteria (24.53%). Collectively, our results confirmed the highly diverse bacterial and fungal communities on weathered rocks, and their close cooperation to sustain the subsurface ecosystem. Phosphorus-bearing minerals were of significance in shaping epipetreous bacterial and fungal communities. These observations provide new knowledge about microbial interactions between bacteria, fungi, and minerals in the subterranean biosphere.

A Multi-Analytical Approach to Infer Mineral–Microbial Interactions Applied to Petroglyph Sites in the Negev Desert of Israel

Petroglyph sites exist all over the world. They are one of the earliest forms of mankind’s expression and a precursor to art. Despite their outstanding value, comprehensive research on conservation and preservation of rock art is minimal, especially as related to biodeterioration. For this reason, the main objective of this study was to explore the factors involved in the degradation of petroglyph sites in the Negev desert of Israel, with a focus on biodegradation processes. Through the use of culture-independent microbiological methods (metagenomics), we characterized the microbiomes of the samples, finding they were dominated by bacterial communities, in particular taxa of Actinobacteria and Cyanobacteria, with resistance to radiation and desiccation. By means of XRF and Raman spectroscopies, we defined the composition of the stone (calcite and quartz) and the dark crust (clay minerals with Mn and Fe oxides), unveiling the presence of carotenoids, indicative of biological colonization. Optical microscopy and SEM–EDX analyses on thin sections highlighted patterns of weathering, possibly connected to the presence of biodeteriorative microorganisms that leach the calcareous matrix from the bedrock and mobilize metal cations from the black varnish for metabolic processes, slowly weathering it.

Size-dependent visible-light-enhanced Cr(VI) bioreduction by hematite nanoparticles

Light irradiation would affect the electron transfer between dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) and semiconducting minerals, which may impose a great influence on the biogeochemistry cycle of heavy metals. However, the size effect of semiconducting minerals on the its electron transfer with DMRB and microbial Cr(VI) reduction under visible light irradiation is little known. Herein, the Cr(VI) reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1) was investigated in the presence of hematite nanoparticles with average diameters of 10 nm and 50 nm in dark and under visible light irradiation. It is found that hematite nanoparticles adhered onto MR-1 cells to form the composites, leading to the decrease in surface sites and Zeta potential. Hematite mediated-Cr(VI) bioreduction rate under visible light irradiation was 0.342 h^-1, which is 3.4 folds enhancement compared with that in dark and 4.4 folds compared with the MR-1 alone under visible light irradiation. Decreasing nanoparticle size of hematite from 50 nm to 10 nm promoted the Cr(VI) reduction under visible light irradiation but impeded it in dark. It was deduced that the bioelectrons from MR-1 could promote the separation of photoelectron-hole pairs of light-irradiated hematite, which consequently enhanced the Cr(VI) bioreduction by MR-1-hematite composites. Moreover, mutant strains experiments demonstrated the vital role of c-cytochrome for the conducting network actively established by MR-1 with hematite nanoparticles. Those findings expand the understanding of the electron transfer pathway for enhancing Cr(VI) reduction by hematite-MR-1 composites, and the impact of particle size on the interaction between semiconducting mineral and electroactive bacteria under light irradiation.

Effect of Photoreduction of Semiconducting Iron Mineral-Goethite on Microbial Community in the Marine Euphotic Zone

Marine euphotic zone is the pivotal region for interplay of light-mineral-microorganism and elements cycle, in which semiconducting minerals exist widely and iron-bearing goethite is a typical and widespread one. In this work, we have conducted in-depth researches on the effect of ferrous [Fe(II)] ions dissolved by photoreduction of goethite on microbial community structure and diversity. The mineral phase, structure and morphology of synthesized goethite were characterized by Raman, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM). Photoelectrochemical measurements tested photoelectric response and redox activity of goethite, having proved its significant property of photoelectric response with 44.11% increment of the average photocurrent density relative to the dark current density. The photoreduction experiments of goethite were conducted under light condition in simulated seawater. It has suggested the photoreduction of goethite could occur and Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II). The dissolved Fe(II) from the photoreduction of goethite under light condition was nearly 11 times than that group without light after a 10-day reaction. Furthermore, results of microbial community sequencing analysis indicated that dissolved Fe(II) could affect the structure and regulate the decrease of microbial community diversity. The emergence of dominant bacteria associated with iron oxidation and transport protein has suggested their obvious selectivity and adaptability in the environment with adding dissolved Fe(II). This work revealed the photoreduction process of semiconducting goethite was remarkable, giving rise to a non-negligible dissolved Fe(II) and its selective effect on the structure, diversity, as well as the function of microbial community. This light-induced interaction between minerals and microorganisms may also further regulate correlative metabolic pathways of carbon cycle in the marine euphotic zone.

Manganese Stress Adaptation Mechanisms of Bacillus safensis Strain ST7 From Mine Soil

The mechanism of bacterial adaption to manganese-polluted environments was explored using 50 manganese-tolerant strains of bacteria isolated from soil of the largest manganese mine in China. Efficiency of manganese removal by the isolated strains was investigated using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Bacillus safensis strain ST7 was the most effective manganese-oxidizing bacteria among the tested isolates, achieving up to 82% removal at a Mn(II) concentration of 2,200 mg/L. Bacteria-mediated manganese oxide precipitates and high motility were observed, and the growth of strain ST7 was inhibited while its biofilm formation was promoted by the presence of Mn(II). In addition, strain ST7 could grow in the presence of high concentrations of Al(III), Cr(VI), and Fe(III). Genome-wide analysis of the gene expression profile of strain ST7 using the RNA-seq method revealed that 2,580 genes were differently expressed under Mn(II) exposure, and there were more downregulated genes (n = 2,021) than upregulated genes (n = 559) induced by Mn stress. KAAS analysis indicated that these differently expressed genes were mainly enriched in material metabolisms, cellular processes, organism systems, and genetic and environmental information processing pathways. A total of twenty-six genes from the transcriptome of strain ST7 were involved in lignocellulosic degradation. Furthermore, after 15 genes were knocked out by homologous recombination technology, it was observed that the transporters, multicopper oxidase, and proteins involved in sporulation and flagellogenesis contributed to the removal of Mn(II) in strain ST7. In summary, B. safensis ST7 adapted to Mn exposure by changing its metabolism, upregulating cation transporters, inhibiting sporulation and flagellogenesis, and activating an alternative stress-related sigB pathway. This bacterial strain could potentially be used to restore soil polluted by multiple heavy metals and is a candidate to support the consolidated bioprocessing community.

Capturing the signal of weak electricigens: a worthy endeavour

Recently several non-traditional electroactive microorganisms have been discovered. These can be considered weak electricigens; microorganisms that typically rely on soluble electron acceptors and donors in their lifecycle but are also capable of extracellular electron transfer (EET), resulting in either a low, unreliable, or otherwise unexpected current. These unanticipated electroactive microorganisms represent a new chapter in electromicrobiology and have important medical, environmental, and biotechnological relevance. As such, it is essential to continue the momentum of their discovery. However, their study poses unique challenges due to their low current output. Capturing their signal necessitates novel approaches including unconventional electrode choice, the use of sensitive electrochemical techniques, and modifications of conventional experiments that use bioelectrochemical systems (BES).

Extracellular electron transfer influences the transport and retention of ferrihydrite nanoparticles in quartz sand coated with Shewanella oneidensis biofilm

Microbial biofilm has been found to impact the mobility of nanoparticles in saturated porous media by altering physicochemical properties of collector surface. However, little is known about the influence of biofilm's biological activity on nanoparticle transport and retention. Here, the transport of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (FhNPs) was studied in quartz sands coated with biofilm of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 that is capable of reducing Fe(III) through extracellular electron transfer (EET). It was found that MR-1 biofilm coating enhanced FhNPs' deposition under different pH/ionic strength conditions and humic acid concentrations. More importantly, when the influent electron donor (glucose) concentration was increased to promote biofilm's EET activity, the breakthrough of FhNPs in biofilm-coated sands was inhibited. A lack of continuous and stable supply of electron donor, on the contrary, led to remobilization and release of the originally retained FhNPs. Column experiments with biofilm of EET-deficient MR-1 mutants (ΔomcA/ΔmtrC and ΔcymA) further indicated that the impairment of EET activity decreased the retention of FhNPs. It is proposed that the effective surface binding and adhesion of FhNPs that is required by direct EET cannot be neglected when evaluating the transport of FhNPs in sands coated with electroactive biofilm.

Rational design of artificial redox-mediating systems toward upgrading photobioelectrocatalysis

Photobioelectrocatalysis has recently attracted particular research interest owing to the possibility to achieve sunlight-driven biosynthesis, biosensing, power generation, and other niche applications. However, physiological incompatibilities between biohybrid components lead to poor electrical contact at the biotic-biotic and biotic-abiotic interfaces. Establishing an electrochemical communication between these different interfaces, particularly the biocatalyst-electrode interface, is critical for the performance of the photobioelectrocatalytic system. While different artificial redox mediating approaches spanning across interdisciplinary research fields have been developed in order to electrically wire biohybrid components during bioelectrocatalysis, a systematic understanding on physicochemical modulation of artificial redox mediators is further required. Herein, we review and discuss the use of diffusible redox mediators and redox polymer-based approaches in artificial redox-mediating systems, with a focus on photobioelectrocatalysis. The future possibilities of artificial redox mediator system designs are also discussed within the purview of present needs and existing research breadth.

Effects of foam nickel supplementation on anaerobic digestion: Direct interspecies electron transfer

Stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer with conductive materials is a promising strategy to overcome the limitation of electron transfer efficiency in syntrophic methanogenesis of industrial wastewater. This paper assessed the impact of conductive foam nickel (FN) supplementation on syntrophic methanogenesis and found that addition of 2.45 g/L FN in anaerobic digestion increased the maximum methane production rate by 27.4 % (on day 3) while decreasing the peak production time by 33 % as compared to the control with no FN. Cumulative methane production from day 2 to 6 was 14.5 % higher with addition of 2.45 g/L FN than in the control. Levels of FN in excess of 2.45 g/L did not show benefits. Cyclic voltammetry results indicated that the biofilm formed on the FN could generate electrons. The dominant bacterial genera in suspended sludge were Dechlorobacter and Rikenellaceae DMER64, whereas that in the FN biofilm was Clostridium sensu stricto 11. The dominant archaea Methanosaeta in the FN biofilm was enriched by 14.1 % as compared to the control.

Genome Analysis of a Marine Bacterium Halomonas sp. and Its Role in Nitrate Reduction under the Influence of Photoelectrons

The solar light response and photoelectrons produced by widespread semiconducting mineral play important roles in biogeochemical cycles on Earth's surface. To explore the potential influence of photoelectrons generated by semiconducting mineral particles on nitrate-reducing microorganisms in the photic zone, a marine heterotrophic denitrifier Halomonas sp. strain 3727 was isolated from seawater in the photic zone of the Yellow Sea, China. This strain was classified as a Halomonadaceae. Whole-genome analysis indicated that this strain possessed genes encoding the nitrogen metabolism, i.e., narG, nasA, nirBD, norZ, nosB, and nxr, which sustained dissimilatory nitrate reduction, assimilatory nitrate reduction, and nitrite oxidation. This strain also possessed genes related to carbon, sulfur, and other metabolisms, hinting at its substantial metabolic flexibility. A series of microcosm experiments in a simulative photoelectron system was conducted, and the results suggested that this bacterial strain could use simulated photoelectrons with different energy for nitrate reduction. Nitrite, as an intermediate product, was accumulated during the nitrate reduction with limited ammonia residue. The nitrite and ammonia productions differed with or without different energy electron supplies. Nitrite was the main product accounting for 30.03% to 68.40% of the total nitrogen in photoelectron supplement systems, and ammonia accounted for 3.77% to 8.52%. However, in open-circuit systems, nitrite and ammonia proportions were 26.77% and 11.17%, respectively, and nitrogen loss in the liquid was not observed. This study reveals that photoelectrons can serve as electron donors for nitrogen transformation mediated by Halomonas sp. strain 3727, which reveals an underlying impact on the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle in the marine photic zone.
