Effect of Antibiotics on the Microbial Efficiency of Anaerobic Digestion of Wastewater: A Review

Occurrence and dissipation mechanisms of organic contaminants during sewage sludge anaerobic digestion: A critical review

Sewage sludge, a complex mixture of contaminants and pathogenic agents, necessitates treatment or stabilization like anaerobic digestion (AD) before safe disposal. AD-derived products (solid digestate and liquid fraction) can be used as fertilizers. During AD, biogas is also produced, and used for energy purposes. All these fractions can be contaminated with various compounds, whose amount depends on the feedstocks used in AD (and their mutual proportions). This paper reviews studies on the distribution of organic contaminants across AD fractions (solid digestate, liquid fraction, and biogas), delving into the mechanisms behind contaminant dissipation and proposing future research directions. AD proves to be a relatively effective method for removing polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pharmaceuticals, antibiotic resistance genes and hydrocarbons. Contaminants are predominantly removed through biodegradation, but many compounds, especially hydrophobic (e.g. per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), are also sorbed onto digestate particles. The process of sorption is suggested to reduce the bioavailability of contaminants. As a result of sorption, contaminants accumulate in the largest amount in the solid digestate, whereas in smaller amounts in the other AD products. Polar pharmaceuticals (e.g. metformin) are particularly leached, while volatile methylsiloxanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, characterized by a high Henry's law constant, are volatilized into the biogas. The removal of compounds can be affected by AD operational parameters, the type of sludge, physicochemical properties of contaminants, and the sludge pretreatment used.

Advantages and drawbacks of life cycle assessment application to the pharmaceuticals: a short critical literature review

Pharmaceuticals are among the most challenging products to assess by life cycle assessment (LCA). The main drawback highlighted by LCA practitioners is the lack of inventory data, both regarding the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) precursors (upstream) and the details concerning the downstream phases (use and end of life). A short critical review of pharma-LCAs found in the literature is here proposed, with discussion of several tools and models used to predict the environmental impacts derived from the life cycle of pharmaceuticals, emphasizing current strengths and weaknesses, and exploring the possibilities for improvements. The case of antibiotics is selected as a representative class of pharmaceuticals, due to their massive use worldwide and the growing related issue of antimicrobial resistance enrichment, which is generally not included in most of LCAs. Also, we comment on drafting product category rules (PCRs) in the relevant field to develop standard methodologies and enhance the comparability of the studies, ultimately advocating collaboration with companies and improving inventory data quality and availability for the whole value chain of products.

Metatranscriptomic profiles reveal the biotransformation potential of azithromycin in river periphyton

Assessment of the interaction between the biotransformation of chemical contaminants and enzyme activity from aquatic microbial communities is critical for improving the micropollutant degradation in river remediation. Here, association mining based on metatranscriptomic analysis was initially applied to determine the genes encoding enzymes involved in the azithromycin (AZI) transformation process and the corresponding microbial hosts in periphyton, followed by revealing the dynamic variation in the community structure and function. In terms of the biotransformation potential, the highly correlated 15 enzymes were suggested to be primarily involved in AZI biotransformation, energy supply, and antibiotic resistance processes, especially aryl-alcohol dehydrogenases (EC: 1.1.1.90), hydroxylamine dehydrogenase (EC: 1.7.2.6), and monooxygenases (EC: 1.14.11.57) that were involved in the biotransformation of AZI. In the matter of community ecological function, the photosystem II (PSII) reaction center in the periphytic photosynthetic process, as indicated by Fv/Fm, was inhibited after AZI exposure, which may be attributed to the down-regulated genes enriched in the photosynthesis - antenna proteins (ko00196), photosynthesis (ko00195), and two-component system (ko02020) pathways. Furthermore, the periphytic utilization capacity for carbohydrates and phenolic acids was enhanced, which was in accordance with all the increased expression of transcripts involved in the corresponding molecular pathways, including aminobenzoate degradation (ko00627), starch and sucrose metabolism (ko00500), ABC transporters (ko02010), phosphotransferase system (ko02060), galactose metabolism (ko00052), amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism (ko00520). Taken together, this study highlighted the critical role of river periphyton in the micropollutant degradation and unraveled the molecular mechanism of antibiotic biotransformation as well as the structural and functional damage in the periphyton.

Promising bioprocesses for the efficient removal of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistance genes from urban and hospital wastewaters: Potentialities of aerobic granular systems

The use, overuse, and improper use of antibiotics have resulted in higher levels of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs), which have profoundly disturbed the equilibrium of the environment. Furthermore, once antibiotic agents are excreted in urine and feces, these substances often can reach wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), in which improper treatments have been highlighted as the main reason for stronger dissemination of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs to the receiving bodies. Hence, achieving better antibiotic removal capacities in WWTPs is proposed as an adequate approach to limit the spread of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs into the environment. In this review, we highlight hospital wastewater (WW) as a critical hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance due to its high level of antibiotics and pathogens. Hence, monitoring the composition and structure of the bacterial communities related to hospital WW is a key factor in controlling the spread of ARGs. In addition, we discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the current biological WW treatments regarding the antibiotic-resistance phenomenon. Widely used conventional activated sludge technology has proved to be ineffective in mitigating the dissemination of ARB and ARGs to the environment. However, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology is a promising technology-with broad adaptability and excellent performance-that could successfully reduce antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs in the generated effluents. We also outline the main operational parameters involved in mitigating antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs in WWTPs. In this regard, WW operation under long hydraulic and solid retention times allows better removal of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs independently of the WW technology employed. Finally, we address the current knowledge of the adsorption and degradation of antibiotics and their importance in removing ARB and ARGs. Notably, AGS can enhance the removal of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs due to the complex microbial metabolism within the granular biomass.

Biomethane is produced by acetate cleavage, not direct interspecies electron transfer: genome-centric view and carbon isotope

Understanding the source of methane (CH4) is of great significance for improving the anaerobic fermentation efficiency in bioengineering, and for mitigating the emission potential of natural ecosystems. Microbes involved in the process named direct interspecies electron transfer coupling with CO2 reduction, i.e., electrons released from electroactive bacteria to reduce CO2 into CH4, have attracted considerable attention for wastewater treatment in the past decade. However, how the synergistic effect of microbiota contributes to this anaerobic carbon metabolism accompanied by CH4 production still remains poorly understood, especial for wastewater with antibiotic exposure. Results show that enhancing lower-abundant acetoclastic methanogens and acetogenic bacteria, rather than electroactive bacteria, contributed to CH4 production, based on a metagenome-assembled genomes network analysis. Natural and artificial isotope tracing of CH4 further confirmed that CH4 mainly originated from acetoclastic methanogenesis. These findings reveal the contribution of direct acetate cleavage (acetoclastic methanogenesis) and provide insightsfor further regulation of methanogenic strategies.

Unravelling the resilience of magnetite assisted granules to starvation and oxytetracycline stress

Starvation and antibiotics pollution are two frequent perturbations during breeding wastewater treatment process. Supplying magnetite into anaerobic system has been proved efficient to accelerate microbial aggregates and alleviate the adverse effect caused by process disturbance. Nevertheless, whether these magnetite-based granules are still superior over normal granules after a long-term starvation period remains unknown, the responsiveness of these granules to antibiotics stress is also ambiguous. In current study, we investigated the resilience of magnetite-based anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) to starvation and oxytetracycline (OTC) stress, by unravelling the variations of reactor performance, sludge properties, ARGs dissemination and microbial community. Compared with the AnGS formed without magnetite, the magnetite assisted AnGS appeared more robust defense to starvation and OTC stress. With magnetite supplement, the average methane yield after starvation recovery, 50 mg/L and 200 mg/L OTC stress was enhanced by 48.95%, 115.87% and 488.41%, respectively, accompanied with less VFAs accumulation, improved tetracycline removal rate (76.3-86.6% vs. 51.0-53.5%) and higher ARGs reduction. Meanwhile, magnetite supplement effectively ameliorated the potential sludge breakage by triggering more large granules formation. Trichococcus was considered an important impetus in maintaining the stability of magnetite-based AnGS process. By inducing more syntrophic methanogenesis partnerships, especially for hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, magnetite ensured the improved reactor performance and stronger resilience at stress conditions.

Proteomic profiling of robust acetoclastic methanogen in chrysene-altered anaerobic digestion: Global dissection of enzymes

Methanogen is a pivotal player in pollution treatment and energy recovery, and emerging pollutants (EPs) frequently occur in methanogen-applied biotechnology such as anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the direct effect and underlying mechanism of EPs on crucial methanogen involved in its application still remain unclear. The positive effect of chrysene (CH) on semi-continuous AD of sludge and the robust methanogen was dissected in this study. The methane yield in the digester with CH (100 mg/kg dry sludge) was 62.1 mL/g VS substrate, much higher than that in the control (46.1 mL/g VS substrate). Both methane production from acetoclastic methanogenesis (AM) and the AM proportion in the methanogenic pathway were improved in CH-shaped AD. Acetoclastic consortia, especially Methanosarcina and functional profiles of AM were enriched by CH in favor of the corresponding methanogenesis. Further, based on pure cultivation exposed to CH, the methanogenic performance, biomass, survivability and activity of typical Methanosarcina (M. barkeri) were boosted. Notably, iTRAQ proteomics revealed that the manufacturing (transcription and translation), expression and biocatalytic activity of acetoclastic metalloenzymes, particularly tetrahydromethanopterin S-methyltransferase and methyl-coenzyme M reductase with cobalt/nickel-cofactor (F₄₃₀ and cobalamin), and acetyl-CoA decarbonylase/synthase with cobalt/nickel-active site, of M. barkeri were upregulated significantly with fold changes in the range of 1.21-3.20 due to the CH presence. This study shed light on EPs-affecting industrially crucial methanogen at the molecular biology level during AD and had implications in the technical relevance of methanogens.

Recent advances in the biological treatment of wastewater rich in emerging pollutants produced by pharmaceutical industrial discharges

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products present potential risks to human health and the environment. In particular, wastewater treatment plants often detect emerging pollutants that disrupt biological treatment. The activated sludge process is a traditional biological method with a lower capital cost and limited operating requirements than more advanced treatment methods. In addition, the membrane bioreactor combines a membrane module and a bioreactor, widely used as an advanced method for treating pharmaceutical wastewater with good pollution performance. Indeed, the fouling of the membrane remains a major problem in this process. In addition, anaerobic membrane bioreactors can treat complex pharmaceutical waste while recovering energy and producing nutrient-rich wastewater for irrigation. Wastewater characterizations have shown that wastewater's high organic matter content facilitates the selection of low-cost, low-nutrient, low-surface-area, and effective anaerobic methods for drug degradation and reduces pollution. However, to improve the biological treatment, researchers have turned to hybrid processes in which all physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods are integrated to remove various emerging contaminants effectively. Hybrid systems can generate bioenergy, which helps reduce the operating costs of the pharmaceutical waste treatment system. To find the most effective treatment technique for our research, this work lists the different biological treatment techniques cited in the literature, such as activated sludge, membrane bioreactor, anaerobic treatment, and hybrid treatment, combining physicochemical and biological techniques.

Current Status and Prospects of Valorizing Organic Waste via Arrested Anaerobic Digestion: Production and Separation of Volatile Fatty Acids

Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are intermediary degradation products during anaerobic digestion (AD) that are subsequently converted to methanogenic substrates, such as hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and acetic acid (CH3COOH). The final step of AD is the conversion of these methanogenic substrates into biogas, a mixture of methane (CH4) and CO2. In arrested AD (AAD), the methanogenic step is suppressed to inhibit VFA conversion to biogas, making VFA the main product of AAD, with CO2 and H2. VFA recovered from the AAD fermentation can be further converted to sustainable biofuels and bioproducts. Although this concept is known, commercialization of the AAD concept has been hindered by low VFA titers and productivity and lack of cost-effective separation methods for recovering VFA. This article reviews the different techniques used to rewire AD to AAD and the current state of the art of VFA production with AAD, emphasizing recent developments made for increasing the production and separation of VFA from complex organic materials. Finally, this paper discusses VFA production by AAD could play a pivotal role in producing sustainable jet fuels from agricultural biomass and wet organic waste materials.

Effects of antibiotics on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge: Performance of anaerobic digestion and structure of the microbial community

As a common biological engineering technology, anaerobic digestion can stabilize sewage sludge and convert the carbon compounds into renewable energy (i.e., methane). However, anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge is severely affected by antibiotics. This review summarizes the effects of different antibiotics on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, including production of methane and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and discusses the impact of antibiotics on biotransformation processes (solubilization, hydrolysis, acidification, acetogenesis and methanogenesis). Moreover, the effects of different antibiotics on microbial community structure (bacteria and archaea) were determined. Most of the research results showed that antibiotics at environmentally relevant concentrations can reduce biogas production mainly by inhibiting methanogenic processes, that is, methanogenic archaea activity, while a few antibiotics can improve biogas production. Moreover, the combination of multiple environmental concentrations of antibiotics inhibited the efficiency of methane production from sludge anaerobic digestion. In addition, some lab-scale pretreatment methods (e.g., ozone, ultrasonic combined ozone, zero-valent iron, Fe³⁺ and magnetite) can promote the performance of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge inhibited by antibiotics.

Impact of Anthropogenic Activities on the Dissemination of ARGs in the Environment-A Review

Over the past few decades, due to the excessive consumption of drugs in human and veterinary medicine, the antimicrobial resistance (AR) of microorganisms has risen considerably across the world, and this trend is predicted to intensify. Many worrying research results indicate the occurrence of pools of AR, both directly related to human activity and environmental factors. The increase of AR in the natural environment is mainly associated with the anthropogenic activity. The dissemination of AR is significantly stimulated by the operation of municipal facilities, such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) or landfills, as well as biogas plants, agriculture and farming practices, including animal production and land application of manure. These activities entail a risk to public health by spreading bacteria resistant to antimicrobial products (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Furthermore, subinhibitory concentrations of antimicrobial substances additionally predispose microbial consortia and resistomes to changes in particular environments that are permeated by these micropollutants. The current state of knowledge on the fate of ARGs, their dissemination and the complexity of the AR phenomenon in relation to anthropogenic activity is inadequate. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge on AR in the environment, in particular focusing on AR spread in an anthropogenically altered environment and related environmental consequences.

Effects of Ciprofloxacin Alone or in Mixture with Sulfamethoxazole on the Efficiency of Anaerobic Digestion and Its Microbial Community

Some livestock farms rely on anaerobic digestion (AD) technology for manure disposal, thus obtaining energy (biogas) and fertilizer (digestate). Mixtures of antibiotics used for animal health often occur in organic waste and their possible synergistic/antagonistic effects on microorganisms involved in AD are still poorly studied. This work focuses on the effects of adding ciprofloxacin, alone (5 mg L⁻¹) and in combination with sulfamethoxazole (2.5–5–10 mg L⁻¹), on AD efficiency and microbial community structure. The experiment consisted of 90-day cattle manure batch tests and antibiotic removal percentages were assessed. Adding antibiotics always promoted CH₄ and H₂ production compared to untreated controls; however, CH₄ production was lowered with the highest ciprofloxacin (CIP) concentrations. The overall results show antibiotic degradation caused by acidogenic Bacteria, and CH₄ was mainly produced through the hydrogenotrophic-pathway by methanogenic Archaea. Shifts in microbial community abundance (DAPI counts) and composition (Illumina-MiSeq and FISH analyses) were observed.

Insight into the Impacts and Removal Pathways of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) in Anaerobic Digestion

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) that accumulates in wastewater and excess sludge interact with the anaerobes and deteriorate the energy recovery and pollutants removal performance in the anaerobic digestion (AD) system. However, the interaction between PFOA and microbial metabolism in the AD systems remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the effects and mechanism of PFOA on the AD process as well as the removal pathways of PFOA in an AD system. The results showed that the methane recovery efficiency was inhibited by 7.6–19.7% with the increased PFOA concentration of 0.5–3.0 mg/L, and the specific methanogenesis activity (SMA) was inhibited by 8.6–22.3%. The electron transfer system (ETS) was inhibited by 22.1–37.3% in the PFOA-containing groups. However, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) gradually increased due to the toxicity of PFOA, and the ratio of protein to polysaccharide shows an upward trend, which led to the formation of sludge aggregates and resistance to the toxic of PFOA. The PFOA mass balance analysis indicated that 64.2–71.6% of PFOA was removed in the AD system, and sludge adsorption was the main removal pathway, accounting for 36.1–61.2% of the removed PFOA. In addition, the anaerobes are proposed to have the potential to reduce PFOA through biochemical degradation since 10.4–28.2% of PFOA was missing in the AD system. This study provides a significant reference for the treatment of high-strength PFOA-containing wastes.

Tylosin in anaerobic reactors: degradation kinetics, effects on methane production and on the microbial community

Tylosin eliminated in animal waste, during therapeutic treatment, can be efficiently removed in anaerobic systems. The present study investigated the influence of tylosin concentration and assessed its degradation kinetics and the microorganisms involved in each stage of its anaerobic digestion (hydrolysis/acidogenesis; acetogenesis; methanogenesis). The results showed a stimulating effect on methane production with increasing tylosin concentration in the poultry litter up to 80 mg kg-1 tylosin (232.9 NL CH4 kg SV-1). As for tylosin degradation, greater removal of antibiotics was observed in the methanogenic phase (88%), followed by acetogenic (84%) and hydrolytic/acidogenic (76%) phases. The higher rate of tylosin degradation obtained in the methanogenic step, is mainly related to the co-metabolic effect exerted by the presence of acetate and its degradation by acetoclastic methanogens. Indeed, metagenomic analyses suggested a syntrophic action between archaea of ​​the genus Methanobacterium, and bacteria such as Clostridium and Flexilinea, which seemed decisive for tylosin degradation.

Metagenomic Analysis of the Long-Term Synergistic Effects of Antibiotics on the Anaerobic Digestion of Cattle Manure

The conversion of cattle manure into biogas in anaerobic digestion (AD) processes has been gaining attention in recent years. However, antibiotic consumption continues to increase worldwide, which is why antimicrobial concentrations can be expected to rise in cattle manure and in digestate. This study examined the long-term synergistic effects of antimicrobials on the anaerobic digestion of cattle manure. The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and changes in microbial biodiversity under exposure to the tested drugs was investigated using a metagenomic approach. Methane production was analyzed in lab-scale anaerobic bioreactors. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were the most abundant bacteria in the samples. The domain Archaea was represented mainly by methanogenic genera Methanothrix and Methanosarcina and the order Methanomassiliicoccales. Exposure to antibiotics inhibited the growth and development of methanogenic microorganisms in the substrate. Antibiotics also influenced the abundance and prevalence of ARGs in samples. Seventeen types of ARGs were identified and classified. Genes encoding resistance to tetracyclines, macrolide–lincosamide–streptogramin antibiotics, and aminoglycosides, as well as multi-drug resistance genes, were most abundant. Antibiotics affected homoacetogenic bacteria and methanogens, and decreased the production of CH4. However, the antibiotic-induced decrease in CH4 production was minimized in the presence of highly drug-resistant microorganisms in AD bioreactors.

The fate of antibiotic resistance genes and their influential factors in swine manure composting with sepiolite as additive

Manures are storages for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) entering the environment. This study investigated the effects of adding sepiolite at 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% (CK, T1, T2, and T3, respectively) on the fates of ARGs during composting. The relative abundances (RAs) of the total ARGs in CK and T3 decreased by 0.23 and 0.46 logs, respectively, after composting. The RAs of 10/11 ARGs decreased in CK, whereas they all decreased in T3. The reduction in the RA of the total mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was 1.26 times higher in T3 compared with CK after composting. The bacterial community accounted for 47.93% of the variation in the abundances of ARGs. Network analysis indicated that ARGs and MGEs shared potential host bacteria (PHB), and T3 controlled the transmission of ARGs by reducing the abundances of PHB. Composting with 7.5% sepiolite is an effective strategy for reducing the risk of ARGs proliferating.

Alizarin-graphene nanocomposite for calibration-free and online pH monitoring of microbial fuel cell

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are sensitive to acidity variations in both bioelectricity generation and biochemical digestion aspects, therefore online pH monitoring is of necessity to guarantee optimal function of MFCs. Present pH meters hardly fulfill this special need. In this work, we designed a novel voltammetric pH sensor based on electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified screen printed electrode. By surface doping of alizarin, good linearity of pH sensing over the range of 4.0-9.0 can be realized. Fast readout can be acquired within 15 s for each test. pH monitoring for artificial wastewater with inoculum of granular activated sludge in a MFC was successfully illustrated. Specially, it was verified that the performance was improved with alizarin doping due to the enhanced rGO surface proton diffusion. This approach provides an online, calibration-free and long stable pH monitoring method for the future MFC development.

Current understanding and perspectives in anaerobic digestion based on genome-resolved metagenomic approaches

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a technique that can be used to treat high concentrations of various organic wastes using a consortium of functionally diverse microorganisms under anaerobic conditions. Methane gas, a beneficial by-product of the AD process, is a renewable energy source that can replace fossil fuels following purification. However, detailed functional roles and metabolic interactions between microbial populations involved in organic waste removal and methanogenesis are yet to be known. Recent metagenomic approaches based on advanced high-throughput sequencing techniques have enabled the exploration of holistic microbial taxonomy and functionality of complex microbial populations involved in the AD process. Gene-centric and genome-centric analyses based on metagenome-assembled genomes are a platform that can be used to study the composition of microbial communities and their roles during AD. This review looks at how these up-to-date metagenomic analyses can be applied to promote our understanding and improved the development of the AD process.

Proteomics reveal biomethane production process induced by carbon nanotube

Biomethane produced by methanogenic archaea is a main greenhouse resource of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, which strongly affects the global environment change. Conductive materials, especially nano-scale, show considerable intervention on biomethane production potential, but the mechanism is still unclear. Herein, we precisely quantified the absolute abundance of Methanosarcina spp. proteins affected by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using tandem mass tag (TMT) proteomics technology. Among the 927 detectable proteins, more than three hundred, 304, showed differential expression. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis on KEGG pathways and GO biological processes revealed a trend of decreased protein synthesis induced by CNTs, suggesting these conductive nanomaterials may replace part of the cell structure and function. Interestingly, increased acetoclastic methanogenesis actually came at the expense of reduced protein synthesis in related pathways. CNTs stimulated biomethane production from acetate by stimulating intracellular redox activity and the -COOH oxidation process. These findings enhanced the understanding of the biomethane production process affected by conductive materials.

Augmentation of chloramphenicol degradation by Geobacter-based biocatalysis and electric field

Electroactive microorganisms and electrochemical technologies have been separately used for environmental remediation such as antibiotics removal, yet the efficiency of coupling these two methods for chlorinated antibiotics removal is poorly known. Here we tested the synergy of Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA, an electroactive bacteria, and an electrical field, on chloramphenicol removal. Removal is increased two-fold by increasing the temperature from 30°C to 37°C. The cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperometry tests demonstrated that G. sulfurreducens PCA catalyzed chloramphenicol chemical reduction with electrode as excusive electron donor. A critical voltage, -0.6 to -0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl, was discovered for chloramphenicol degradation with an increase of removal rate about 2.62-folds, from 31.06% to 81.41%. Combined removal with both G. sulfurreducens PCA and an electrical field increased the apparent rate constant and reached 82.77% removal at -0.5 V. Specially, the combined removal at -0.5 V even presented more robust removal efficiency compared to -0.6 V (78.64%) without G. sulfurreducens PCA. Mass spectrometry of degradation products indicates the reduction of nitro into amine groups, and dechlorination into less toxic compounds. Overall, combined biocatalysis and an electrical field is a promising method to remove antibiotics from polluted environments.
