Abstract
We recently used phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to demonstrate an attenuated postprandial blood flow response in the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in patients with Parkinson's disease compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Since both groups showed substantial inter-individual variations, we extended the cohort of controls with a group of young individuals to investigate possible age-related effects. Seventeen healthy young subjects aged < 30 years and 17 elderly subjects aged > 50 years underwent serial PC-MRI to measure the postprandial blood flow response in the SMA after ingestion of a standardized liquid test meal (∼400 kcal). Postprandial blood flow dynamics in SMA did not differ between young and elderly subjects. A noticeable inter-individual variation in postprandial intestinal blood flow increase was found, and approximately 30% of the variation could be explained by the preprandial blood flow. Regardless of age, some subjects showed a remarkable transient SMA blood flow increase immediately after meal intake. This study provides tentative evidence that postprandial blood flow dynamics in SMA in healthy young and elderly subjects do not substantially differ, indicating that age is without impact on vascular response in SMA as an indicator for regulation of mesenteric perfusion in response to food intake.

Abstract
Assessing imaging biomarker in the prodromal and early phases of Parkinson's disease (PD) is of great importance to ensure an early and safe diagnosis. In the last decades, imaging modalities advanced and are now able to assess many different aspects of neurodegeneration in PD. MRI sequences can measure iron content or neuromelanin. Apart from SPECT imaging with Ioflupane, more specific PET tracers to assess degeneration of the dopaminergic system are available. Furthermore, metabolic PET patterns can be used to anticipate a phenoconversion from prodromal PD to manifest PD. In this regard, it is worth mentioning that PET imaging of inflammation will gain significance. Molecular imaging of neurotransmitters like serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine shed more light on non-motor symptoms. Outside of the brain, molecular imaging of the heart and gut is used to measure PD-related degeneration of the autonomous nervous system. Moreover, optical coherence tomography can noninvasively detect degeneration of retinal fibers as a potential biomarker in PD. In this review, we describe these state-of-the-art imaging modalities in early and prodromal PD and point out in how far these techniques can and will be used in the future to pave the way towards a biomarker-based staging of PD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Parkinson's disease and diabetes affect an increasing proportion of the aging global population. Both conditions extensively affect gastrointestinal (GI) motility with similar and differing clinical symptoms. Nonetheless, GI symptoms in Parkinson's disease and diabetes pose significant morbidity and impairment of quality of life. Their pathophysiology is poorly understood, and therefore, effective treatment options are lacking. RECENT FINDINGS Parkinson's disease patients have oropharyngeal dysphagia and constipation. They also have mild or absent upper GI symptoms associated with delayed gastric emptying, which is prevalent in 70% of patients. Delayed gastric emptying in Parkinson's disease leads to erratic medication absorption and fluctuating motor symptoms. Half of diabetics have upper GI symptoms, which correlate to gastric emptying and changes in brain activity of the insular cortex. The majority of diabetics also have constipation. Diabetics have an increased risk for developing Parkinson's disease and anti-diabetic medications are associated with risk reduction of developing Parkinson's disease. Hyperglycemia is associated with advanced glycated end products formation and acceleration of α-synuclein aggregation. GLP-1 receptor agonists have also demonstrated efficacy in improving motor symptoms and cognition in Parkinson's disease patients with diabetes. Parkinson's disease and diabetes are pan-enteric disorders with significant GI symptoms and impairment of gut motility. Both conditions have synergistic pathophysiologies that propagate neurodegenerative changes. Treatment options for GI symptoms in diabetic and Parkinson's disease patients are lacking. Anti-diabetic treatment improves motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease, however, its effect on GI symptoms is unclear.
