Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common among nurses and can lead to various health problems. Further, the relationship between multiple sleep problems and memory impairment in clinical nurses remains unknown. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between sleep problems and memory impairment among nurses. METHODS Multistage cluster-stratified random sampling was performed from tertiary hospitals in Shandong, China. Overall, a total of 1833 nurses were included in the final analysis. The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and prospective and retrospective memory questionnaire were administered to the participants. RESULTS The sleep quality of the nurses decreased during the normal epidemic prevention and control period compared with that before the epidemic in terms of sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and sleep disturbances. Nurses who reported cumulative or specific sleep problems (e.g., high sleep latency, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction) and those in the "daily disturbances" and "poor sleep quality" groups had a higher risk of memory impairment than the others. CONCLUSION Sleep problems might be important for memory impairment among nurses. These findings may help identify nurses at considerable risk of memory impairment in clinical practice.

Abstract
Numerous studies have examined executive function (EF) abilities in cognitively healthy older adults and those living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Currently, there are no standard accepted protocols for testing specific EFs; thus, researchers have used their preferred tool, which leads to variability in assessments of decline in a particular ability across studies. Therefore, there is a need for guidance as to the most sensitive tests for assessing EF decline. A search of the most current literature published between 2000 and 2022 on EF studies assessing cognitively healthy older adults and individuals living with MCI and AD was conducted using PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Emphasis was placed on the EF's dual-tasking, inhibition, shifting or switching, and working memory updating. Many tasks and their outcomes were reviewed. Of particular importance was the difference in outcomes for tasks applied to the same group of participants. These various EF assessment tools demonstrate differences in effectively identifying decline in EF ability due to the aging process and neurodegenerative conditions, such as MCI and AD. This review identifies various factors to consider in using particular EF tasks in particular populations, including task demand and stimuli factors, and also when comparing differing results across studies.

Abstract
To better understand working memory (WM) deficits in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), we examined information precision and associative binding in WM in 21 participants with MCI, compared to 16 healthy controls, using an item-location delayed reproduction task. WM, along with other executive functions (i.e. Trail Making Task (TMT) and Stroop task), were measured before and after a 2-h nap. The napping manipulation was intended as an exploratory element to this study exploring potential impacts of napping on executive functions.Compared to healthy participants, participants with MCI exhibited inferior performance not only in identifying encoded WM items but also on item-location associative binding and location precision even when only one item was involved. We also found changes on TMT and Stroop tasks in MCI, reflecting inferior attention and inhibitory control. Post-napping performance improved in most of these WM and other executive measures, both in MCI and their healthy peers.Our study shows that associative binding and WM precision can reliably differentiate MCIs from their healthy peers. Additionally, most measures showed no differential effect of group pre- and post-napping. These findings may contribute to better understanding cognitive deficits in MCI therefore improving the diagnosis of MCI.

Abstract
Introduction Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often described as an intermediate stage of the normal cognitive decline associated with aging and dementia. There is a growing interest in various non-pharmacological interventions for MCI to delay the onset and inhibit the progressive deterioration of daily life functions. Previous studies suggest that cognitive training (CT) contributes to the restoration of working memory and that the brain-computer-interface technique can be applied to elicit a more effective treatment response. However, these techniques have certain limitations. Thus, in this preliminary study, we applied the neurofeedback paradigm during CT to increase the working memory function of patients with MCI. Methods Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to provide neurofeedback by measuring the changes in oxygenated hemoglobin in the prefrontal cortex. Thirteen elderly MCI patients who received CT-neurofeedback sessions four times on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) once a week were recruited as participants. Results Compared with pre-intervention, the activity of the targeted brain region increased when the participants first engaged in the training; after 4 weeks of training, oxygen saturation was significantly decreased in the left dlPFC. The participants demonstrated significantly improved working memory compared with pre-intervention and decreased activity significantly correlated with improved cognitive performance. Conclusion Our results suggest that the applications for evaluating brain-computer interfaces can aid in elucidation of the subjective mental workload that may create additional or decreased task workloads due to CT.

Abstract
With the aging of the population, a key concern of both societies and health services is to keep the population cognitively healthy until the maximum age limit. It is a well-known fact that vascular aging has a negative effect on the cognitive skills of adults, putting them at greater risk of developing dementia. The present longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the main dimensions of cognition in two pathological groups with different health profiles: a group of adults with vascular risk factors (VRF) (n = 35) and a group of adults with vascular risk factors and mild cognitive impairment (VRF + MCI) (n = 35). The two groups were matched in age, education, and gender. They were assessed with extensive neuropsychological testing at three different times with a distance of about 8 months between them; the assessment regarded executive functions, memory capacity, and Theory of Mind abilities. The analyses carried out were (a) mixed-measures ANOVA, (b) repeated measures ANOVA, and (c) ANOVA. The findings showed that global cognitive status and short-term memory are the main cognitive abilities that decline in community dwelling people bearing VRF. Hence, this group of adults should be examined at least every 2 years for this decline. As regards people with both VRF and MCI, it seems that the assessment of Theory of Mind abilities can better capture their further impairment. Global cognitive status, task/rule switching function, and long-term memory (delayed verbal recall) were revealed as the abilities that clearly and steadily differentiate VRF people with and without MCI.

Abstract
Background Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered to be an intermediate stage between normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The earliest and most common symptom of MCI is impaired episodic memory. When episodic memory is impaired in MCI patients, specific functional changes occur in related brain areas. However, there is currently a lack of a unified conclusion on this change. Therefore, the purpose of this meta-analysis is to find MRI-specific functional changes in episodic memory in MCI patients. Methods Based on three commonly used indicators of brain function: functional connectivity (FC), the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation /fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF/fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo), we systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science and Ovid related literature and conducted the strict screening. Then we use the activation likelihood estimation (ALE) algorithm to perform the coordinate-based meta-analysis. Results Through strict screening, this meta-analysis finally included 21 related functional neuroimaging research articles. The final result displays that functional changes of episodic memory in MCI patients are mainly located in the parahippocampal gyrus, precuneus, posterior cingulate gyrus, cuneus, middle temporal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, lingual gyrus, and thalamus. Conclusions There are specific functional changes in episodic memory brain regions in MCI patients, and the brain functional network can regulate episodic memory through these brain regions. And these specific changes can assist in the early diagnosis of MCI, providing new ideas and directions for early identification and intervention in the process of MCI.

Abstract
Evidence has shown that multisensory integration benefits to unisensory perception performance are asymmetric and that auditory perception performance can receive more multisensory benefits, especially when the attention focus is directed toward a task-irrelevant visual stimulus. At present, whether the benefits of semantically (in)congruent multisensory integration with modal-based attention for subsequent unisensory short-term memory (STM) retrieval are also asymmetric remains unclear. Using a delayed matching-to-sample paradigm, the present study investigated this issue by manipulating the attention focus during multisensory memory encoding. The results revealed that both visual and auditory STM retrieval reaction times were faster under semantically congruent multisensory conditions than under unisensory memory encoding conditions. We suggest that coherent multisensory representation formation might be optimized by restricted multisensory encoding and can be rapidly triggered by subsequent unisensory memory retrieval demands. Crucially, auditory STM retrieval is exclusively accelerated by semantically congruent multisensory memory encoding, indicating that the less effective sensory modality of memory retrieval relies more on the coherent prior formation of a multisensory representation optimized by modal-based attention.

Abstract
Working memory (WM) plays an important role in cognitive activity. The WM system is used to temporarily store information in learning and decision-making. WM always functions in many aspects of daily life, such as the short-term memory of words, cell phone verification codes, and cell phone numbers. In young adults, studies have shown that a central memory store is limited to three to five meaningful items. Little is known about how WM functions at the microscopic neural level, but appropriate neural network computational models can help us gain a better understanding of it. In this study, we attempt to design a microscopic neural network model to explain the internal mechanism of WM. The performance of existing positive feedback models depends on the parameters of a synapse. We use a negative-derivative feedback mechanism to counteract the drift in persistent activity, making the hybrid positive and negative-derivative feedback (HPNF) model more robust to common disturbances. To fulfill the mechanism of WM at the neural circuit level, we construct two main neural networks based on the HPNF model: a memory-storage sub-network (the memory-storage sub-network is composed of several sets of neurons, so we call it "SET network", or "SET" for short) with positive feedback and negative-derivative feedback and a storage distribution network (SDN) designed by combining SET for memory item storage and memory updating. The SET network is a neural information self-sustaining mechanism, which is robust to common disturbances; the SDN constructs a storage distribution network at the neural circuit level; the experimental results show that our network can fulfill the storage, association, updating, and forgetting of information at the level of neural circuits, and it can work in different individuals with little change in parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Susceptibility to proactive semantic interference (PSI) and the inability to ameliorate these difficulties with one additional learning trial have repeatedly been implicated as early features of incipient Alzheimer's disease (AD). Unfortunately, persistent failure to recover from PSI (frPSI) after repeated learning trials, are not captured by existing memory measures, or been examined in pre-mild cognitive impairment (PreMCI). OBJECTIVE A novel Cognitive Stress Test (CST) was employed to measure the impact of PSI, initial failure to recover from PSI and persistent effects of PSI, despite multiple learning trials of the new to-be-remembered material (pfrPSI). We hypothesized that PSI deficits on the CST would persist in both PreMCI and amnestic MCI (aMCI) groups over repeated learning trials when compared to cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults. METHODS One hundred fifty older adults (69 CU, 31 PreMCI, and 50 aMCI) underwent a standardized clinical and neuropsychological evaluation. The CST was independent of diagnostic classification. RESULTS Even after adjusting for strength of initial learning, aMCI and PreMCI groups demonstrated greater persistent PSI (pfrPSI) relative to the CU group despite repeated learning trials of List B. Further, the aMCI group made a higher number of semantic intrusion errors relative to the PreMCI and CU groups on all List B Cued Recall trials. CONCLUSION Persistent PSI appears to be a common feature of aMCI and PreMCI. The possible theoretical mechanisms and empirical implications of these new findings are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the relationship between neural activities and retinal structures associated with working memory (WM) in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS Eleven older adults with MCI and 29 healthy controls (60 to 73 years old) were tested. All participants underwent an event-related potential (ERP) recording while performing the two-back memory task. The Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) was administered to examine the perfusion and vessel density in the retina. RESULTS Results showed that WM performance in the MCI group was negatively associated with ERP latencies in central parietal regions (CP6 and CP8) (ps< 0.05). The left nasal vessel and perfusion densities were negatively correlated with the latencies in these two central parietal regions and positively related to WM performance only in the MCI group (ps< 0.05). CONCLUSION The findings on WM, central parietal brain activity, and left nasal vessel and perfusion densities in the retina help us gain a better understanding of the neural and retinal underpinnings of WM in relation to MCI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Difficulties in inhibition and self-monitoring are early features of incipient Alzheimer's disease and may manifest as susceptibility to proactive semantic interference. However, due to limitations of traditional memory assessment paradigms, recovery from interference effects following repeated learning opportunities has not been explored. OBJECTIVE This study employed a novel computerized list learning test consisting of repeated learning trials to assess recovery from proactive and retroactive semantic interference. DESIGN The design was cross-sectional. SETTING Participants were recruited from the community as part of a longitudinal study on normal and abnormal aging. PARTICIPANTS The sample consisted of 46 cognitively normal individuals and 30 participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. MEASUREMENTS Participants were administered the Cognitive Stress Test and traditional neuropsychological measures. Step-wise logistic regression was applied to determine which Cognitive Stress Test measures best discriminated between diagnostic groups. This was followed by receiver operating characteristic analyses. RESULTS Cued A3 recall, Cued B3 recall and Cued B2 intrusions were all independent predictors of diagnostic status. The overall predictive utility of the model yielded 75.9% sensitivity, 91.1% specificity, and an overall correct classification rate of 85.1%. When these variables were jointly entered into receiver operating characteristic analyses, the area under the curve was .923 (p<.001). CONCLUSIONS This novel paradigm's use of repeated learning trials offers a unique opportunity to assess recovery from proactive and retroactive semantic interference. Participants with mild cognitive impairment exhibited a continued failure to recover from proactive interference that could not be explained by mere learning deficits.

Abstract
Cognitive inhibition is part of executive functions. When it exercises control over memory processes, it has the function of regulating the accessibility of memories and allows interference to be resolved. The impairment of its functioning has been related to the presence of forgetfulness of relevant information. In this research, we study the functioning of cognitive memory inhibition processes in people with intellectual disabilities in tasks of delayed visual recognition and analyze the influence of age. For this purpose, 36 people with Down syndrome (mean age = 33.44, standard deviation = 7.54, 50% females) and 36 people with neurotypical development (mean age = 33.55, standard deviation = 7.52, 50% females) participated. The results reflected a lower effectiveness in the group of people with Down syndrome, F(1, 68) = 159.09, p < .001, $ {\upeta}_{\mathrm{p}}^2 $ = .70. The people in the group with Down syndrome had difficulties in interference resolution, both in the subgroup of young people (p = .014, $ \hat{\updelta\ } $= 0.88) and in the subgroup of older people (p = .022, $ \hat{\updelta\ } $= 0.67). The impairment of cognitive inhibition in people with Down syndrome warrants the need to develop specific intervention programs for this process.
