Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) and dental caries, considering muscle mass (MM), bone mineral density (BMD), and oral hygiene habits (OHH) as mediators. This study has an analytical cross-sectional design with 2,515 adolescents (18-19 years). The main exposure - the UPF intake ratio - was established using the food frequency questionnaire. The outcome was the number of decayed teeth, according to the DMFT index. The model adjustment included socio-economic status (SES), frequency of physical activity, and concurrent risk habits (CRH) as potential confounders. Three latent variables were considered: SES (family income, economic class, household head, and adolescent education), OHH (gingival bleeding on probing index and visible plaque index), and CRH (alcohol and tobacco dependence). The analyses used structural equation modeling, estimating the standardized coefficient (SC) in three models: lumbar BMD(1), femoral BMD(2), and total BMD(3). UPF consumption had a direct (SCmodel1=0.071, SCmodel2=0.072, SCmodel3=0.071; p < 0.05) and total (SCmodel1=0.067, SCmodel2=0.068, SCmodel3=0.068; p < 0.05) effect on the number of decayed teeth. BMD and MM did not mediate the association between UPF and dental caries, but the indirect association mediated by OHH was significant in all analyses (p < 0.05). Dental Caries was explained in other specific pathways: SES→UPF→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.009, SCmodel2 = 0.008, SCmodel3 = 0.009); SES→OHH→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.033, SCmodel2 = 0.033, SCmodel3 = 0.034); CRH→UPF→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.009, SCmodel2 = 0.008, SCmodel3 = 0.008); CRH→OHH→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.029, SCmodel2 = 0.027, SCmodel3 = 0.027). Dental caries prevention should include encouraging good OHH, healthy eating, and developing equitable public policies in middle and low-income countries like Brazil.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Muscle mass is vital for physical activity and fundamental physiological processes supporting long-term health. While aging is inevitable, certain modifiable factors positively influence muscle preservation and overall well-being. However, the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and muscle mass is not yet clear. METHODS This study included 7,173 men and nonpregnant women aged 20-59 years with valid 24-hour dietary recalls and accessible whole-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from NHANES 2011-2018. UPFs were identified through the NOVA classification system, and the percentage of energy derived from UPF consumption was evaluated in quintiles. Muscle mass measures were derived from DXA scans and quantified by the total and regional muscle mass index (MMI, kg/m²) and appendicular muscle mass index (AMMI, kg/m²). Multivariable-adjusted generalized linear regression models were applied to investigate the association between consumption of UPFs and muscle mass measures overall and by sociodemographic subgroups. RESULTS The multivariable-adjusted differences of total MMI from the lowest to highest quintile of UPF consumption were 0 (reference), -0.03 (95% CI, -0.13, 0.07), -0.13 (95%CI, -0.24, -0.04), -0.12 (95% CI, -0.23, -0.01), and - 0.17 (95% CI, -0.27, -0.08) (P for trend < 0.001). Subtotal MMI followed a similar magnitude of associational pattern as total MMI. For trunk MMI, corresponding values from the lowest to highest quintiles of UPF consumption were 0 (reference), -0.02 (95% CI, -0.07, 0.02), -0.05 (95%CI, -0.11, 0.00), -0.07 (95% CI, -0.13, -0.01), and - 0.07 (95% CI, -0.12, -0.01). For AMMI, corresponding values from the lowest to highest quintiles of UPF consumption were 0 (reference), -0.004 (95% CI, -0.07, 0.06), -0.08 (95%CI, -0.14, -0.02), -0.05 (95% CI, -0.11, 0.02), and - 0.10 (95% CI, -0.16, -0.04) (All P for trend < 0.001). While most subgroups maintained similar overall patterns, heterogeneous findings were also observed. For example, the multivariable-adjusted differences in total MMI between the lowest and highest quantile of UPF consumption were - 0.19 (95% CI, -0.32, -0.06) for non-Hispanic Whites, 0.18 (95% CI, 0.01, 0.36) for non-Hispanic Blacks, -0.25 (95%CI, -0.45, -0.04) for Hispanics, -0.25 (95% CI, -0.51, 0.05) for non-Hispanic Asians and - 0.32 (95% CI, -0.75, 0.12) for others (P for interaction < 0.001). CONCLUSION Higher consumption of UPFs was significantly associated with lower values of total and regional muscle mass. Specifically, comparing the highest quantile of UPF consumption to the lowest, total MMI decreased by 0.93%, trunk MMI decreased by 0.76%, and AMMI decreased by 1.25%. The differences in associational patterns between UPF consumption and muscle mass across sociodemographic subgroups require further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ultra-processed foods (UPF) and minimally processed foods (MPF) consumption are differentially connected to adiposity and possibly body composition. Phase angle (PhA) originates from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and is connected to cellular health. This study is the first to investigate associations between UPF/MPF consumption and PhA. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted. Anthropometrical and BIA were performed. The Hellenic Physical Activity Questionnaire was used for physical activity evaluation, while a validated FFQ was used for dietary assessment. UPF and MPF intake (% energy) were determined according to the NOVA system. Partial correlation coefficients of PhA and dietary variables were assessed after multi-adjustment. PARTICIPANTS Students were recruited (n 151, 114 women). SETTING University. RESULTS Median and interquartile range (IQR) of PhA were 5·5° (5·1-6·4°) in the total sample, 6·8° (6·1-7·3°) in men and 5·3° (5·1-5·9°) in women (P < 0·001). The median and IQR for UPF consumption was 13·7 (8·1-33·4) % in the total sample, 23·8 (8·1-70·5) % in men and 12·9 (8·1-27·5) % in women (P < 0·001). The mean (sd) of MPF consumption was 60·2 (sd 15·7) % for the total sample, 59·1 (sd 16·4) % for men and 60·5 (sd 15·6) % for women (P = 0·720). The consumption of UPF was negatively (rho = -0·267, P = 0·002), while the consumption of MPF was positively (rho = 0·218, P = 0·010) associated with the PhA, after adjustment for age, sex, BMI and physical activity. CONCLUSION PhA relates inversely to UPF and positively to MPF consumption. The observed associations possibly reflect the effects of diet on cellular health and in turn PhA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food intakes 1-2 years following bariatric surgery depend more on patients than the surgery's gastrointestinal tract changes. This study aimed to determine the major dietary patterns of patients after the first two years of sleeve gastrectomy and to investigate their associations with total weight loss (TWL) and the proportion of TWL as fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) loss. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 146 patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy 2-4 years after surgery. Dietary patterns were determined using principal component analysis based on the 19 food groups. The percentage of FM loss relative to TWL (%FML) and FFM loss relative to TWL (%FFML) were calculated. A suboptimal clinical response was defined as a TWL of less than 25%. High FM loss and excessive FFM loss were defined based on the highest tertiles. Linear and logistic regression models were used to derive unstandardized (B) coefficients and odds ratios (OR), with dietary pattern scores serving as both a continuous and a binary variable (higher vs. lower adherence groups based on median). RESULTS Two predominant dietary patterns were retained. Each 1-unit increase in the first dietary pattern score characterized by high intakes of fast foods, soft drinks, processed meats, sugar confectionary, salty snacks, grains, and organ meats was associated with higher %FFML (B = 1.99; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.34, 3.66), lower %FML (B = - 1.84; 95% CI - 3.49, - 0.20), and higher odds of excessive FFM loss (OR = 1.84; 95% CI 1.09, 3.11). Participants with higher adherence to the first dietary pattern had lower %TWL, and greater odds of suboptimal clinical response and excessive FFM loss than those with lower adherence. Each 1-unit increase in score for the second dietary pattern characterized by a high intake of fruits, dairy, vegetables, legumes, eggs, nuts, red meats, poultry, and fish was associated with lower odds of suboptimal clinical response (OR = 0.51; 95% CI 0.31, 0.86). CONCLUSION Patients should be encouraged to modify their diet by reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods and increasing their intake of high-quality protein sources, fruits, and vegetables to achieve the best postoperative outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in the immediate (2 months after transplantation) and late post-transplant (14 months after transplantation) periods among kidney transplant patients and to examine its correlation with nutritional quality and body composition. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of 96 kidney transplant recipients divided into 2 groups: immediate post-transplant (n = 71) and late post-transplant (n = 25). Sociodemographic, anthropometric, and laboratory data were collected and grouped in a database. Food intake was evaluated by a validated food frequency questionnaire and foods were divided according to the NOVA classification system. The consumption of UPFs was calculated and statistical analyses were performed to evaluate its correlation with nutritional components and body composition. RESULTS The consumption of UPFs was 649.4 [420.0-1061.72] kcal/day, accounting for 33.3 ± 11.9% of the total daily energy intake. The immediate post-transplant group showed higher total daily energy and UPFs intake compared to the late post-transplant group (P = .002 and P = .046, respectively), although the energy contribution of UPFs was similar between both groups. UPFs intake was positively correlated with higher percentages of total fat, trans fat, saturated, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, starch, and sodium (P < .05 for all analyses). An inverse correlation was observed between UPFs consumption and the percentage of protein and carbohydrates in the food intake (P = .025 and P = .008, respectively). In the immediate post-transplant group, a higher intake of UPFs was correlated with lower muscle mass (r = -0.250, P = .037). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study reveal a pattern of increased consumption of UPFs among kidney transplant patients in comparison to the national average. This higher intake of UPFs was correlated with lower nutritional quality during both periods. Moreover, a significant correlation was observed between UPFs consumption and adverse body composition parameters, specifically in the immediate post-transplant period.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pro-vegetarian (PVG) dietary patterns have shown health benefits, although the evidence concerning their association with mortality is scarce, particularly in older populations. We investigated the effect of three defined PVG patterns on all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality risk in an older Mediterranean population. METHODS We analysed baseline data from 597 adults aged 65 and older who participated in a population-based cross-sectional study, and mortality during a 12-year period. We used a validated food frequency questionnaire to estimate the adherence in tertiles to three evidence-based PVG dietary patterns: a general PVG pattern (gPVG) and two specific variations (healthful -hPVG, and unhealthful -uPVG). The gPVG pattern incorporated data from 12 food groups, consisting of 7 plant-based and 5 animal-based. The hPVG and uPVG versions included information from 18 food groups (4 food groups added and the splitting of 2 food groups). We used Cox regression to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusting for relevant covariates. RESULTS After the 12-years follow-up period, moderate adherence to hPVG pattern was associated with lower all-cause and CVD mortality whereas greater adherence to uPVG pattern was associated with higher all-cause and CVD mortality. Compared with those in the lowest tertile, participants in the second tertile of adherence to the hPVG pattern showed a significant lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 0.59; 95%CI: 0.43, 0.82) and CVD mortality (HR = 0.47; 0.28, 0.78). Participants in the highest tertile of adherence to the uPVG showed an increased mortality risk of all-cause (HR = 1.53; 1.07, 2.19) and CVD (HR = 2.10; 1.19, 3.70). No significant associations were found between adherence to any of the PVG dietary patterns and cancer mortality. CONCLUSION Moderate adherence to a healthy PVG pattern reduced the long-term mortality risk for all-cause and CVD in an older Mediterranean population, while higher adherence to an unhealthy PVG pattern increased the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality.

Abstract
BACKGRUOUND The effects of excessive ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption on body composition measures or sociodemographic disparities are understudied in Korea. We aimed to investigate the association of UPF intake with percent body fat (PBF) and percent appendicular skeletal muscle mass (PASM) by sociodemographic status in adults. METHODS This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2011 (n=11,123 aged ≥40 years). We used a NOVA system to classify all foods reported in a 24-hour dietary recall, and the percentage of energy intake (%kcal) from UPFs was estimated. PBF and PASM were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Tertile (T) 3 of PBF indicated adiposity and T1 of PASM indicated low skeletal muscle mass, respectively. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) after adjusting covariates. RESULTS UPF intake was positively associated with PBF-defined adiposity (ORper 10% increase, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.002 to 1.08) and low PASM (ORper 10% increase, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.09). These associations were stronger in rural residents (PBF: ORper 10% increase, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.23; PASM: ORper 10% increase, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.23) and not college graduates (PBF: ORper 10% increase, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.11; PASM: ORper 10% increase, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.12) than their counterparts. CONCLUSION A higher UPF intake was associated with higher adiposity and lower skeletal muscle mass among Korean adults aged 40 years and older, particularly in those from rural areas and with lower education levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The relationship between appendicular lean mass (ALM) and most cardiovascular events has been established, but the direct association between ALM and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS Herein, we identified 494 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) strongly associated with ALM as instrumental variables (P < 5E-8) based on a genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 450,243 European participants. Then, we employed five Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis methods to investigate the causal relationship between ALM and AF. All results indicated a causal relationship between ALM and AF, among Inverse variance weighted (P = 8.44E-15, odds ratio [OR]: 1.16, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.114-1.198). Furthermore, we performed a sensitivity analysis, which revealed no evidence of pleiotropy (egger_intercept = 0.000089, P = 0.965) or heterogeneity (MR Egger, Q Value = 0.980; Inverse variance weighted, Q Value = 0.927). The leave-one-out method demonstrates that individual SNPs have no driven impact on the whole causal relationship. Multivariable MR analysis indicates that, after excluding the influence of hypertension and coronary heart disease, a causal relationship between ALM and AF still exists (P = 7.74E-40, OR 95 %CI: 1.389 (1.323-1.458)). Importantly, the Radial MR framework analysis and Robust Adjusted Profile Score (RAPS) further exhibit the robustness of this causal relationship. CONCLUSION A strong association between ALM and AF was confirmed, and high ALM is a risk factor for AF.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the role of adiposity in the associations between ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and head and neck cancer (HNC) and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. METHODS Our study included 450,111 EPIC participants. We used Cox regressions to investigate the associations between the consumption of UPFs and HNC and OAC risk. A mediation analysis was performed to assess the role of body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) in these associations. In sensitivity analyses, we investigated accidental death as a negative control outcome. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 14.13 ± 3.98 years, 910 and 215 participants developed HNC and OAC, respectively. A 10% g/d higher consumption of UPFs was associated with an increased risk of HNC (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-1.34) and OAC (HR = 1.24, 95% CI 1.05-1.47). WHR mediated 5% (95% CI 3-10%) of the association between the consumption of UPFs and HNC risk, while BMI and WHR, respectively, mediated 13% (95% CI 6-53%) and 15% (95% CI 8-72%) of the association between the consumption of UPFs and OAC risk. UPF consumption was positively associated with accidental death in the negative control analysis. CONCLUSIONS We reaffirmed that higher UPF consumption is associated with greater risk of HNC and OAC in EPIC. The proportion mediated via adiposity was small. Further research is required to investigate other mechanisms that may be at play (if there is indeed any causal effect of UPF consumption on these cancers).

Abstract
The present study investigates the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and anthropometric indices of body composition in adults and seniors living in Teresina, the state capital of an area in northeastern Brazil. The article seeks to address two questions: Is UPF consumption linked to worsening body composition in different age groups? Do anthropometric indicators of body composition change with the increasing consumption of UPF? The study is a cross-sectional, household, population study, carried out with 490 adults and seniors. The food consumption was obtained with a 24 h food recall, and the foods were classified using NOVA. Anthropometric indicators evaluated were waist-to-height ratio, triceps skinfold thickness, arm circumference, corrected arm muscle area, subscapular skinfold thickness, and calf circumference. The association between energy contribution of UPF with anthropometric indicators was verified with a simple and multiple linear regression analysis. Individuals aged 20 to 35 years showed a significant association between UPF consumption and skinfold thickness (ß: 0.04; CI: 0.03/0.09), demonstrating an increase in this subcutaneous body fat marker with higher UPF consumption. Moreover, in participants aged 36 to 59 years, an inverse correlation between UPF intake and muscle mass markers, arm circumference (ß: -0.02; confidence interval: -0.03/-0.01), and corrected arm muscle area (ß: -0.07; confidence interval: -0.12/-0.02) were observed. Such results suggest there is decreased muscle mass with increasing UPF consumption. This is the first study that verified an association between UPF consumption and low-cost body composition indicators in different age groups.
