Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) imposes a substantial burden on older adults, and healthy diets and lifestyles may bring with benefits. However, quantifiable studies on the dietary and lifestyle risk factors for HF are scant. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) reflects the oxidative stress status of dietary components and lifestyle factors, but its relationship with HF risk is unclear. OBJECTIVE We aims to explore the association between OBS and the prevalence of HF. METHODS Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018, the association between OBS and the HF prevalence was analyzed by weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses assessed the stability of the results. RESULTS The prevalence of HF in the cohort of 6238 older adults was 5.55 %. Compared to the lowest quintile, the adjusted ORs for HF in the highest quintile of OBS and lifestyle OBS were 0.57 (95 % CI: 0.33,0.97) and 0.21 (95 %CI: 0.09,0.50), respectively. The association between OBS and HF prevalence remained stable across different models and subgroups. RCS revealed a potential inflection point. Sensitivity analysis validated the negative association between OBS and HF prevalence, and the correlation analysis between OBS and serum γ-glutamyltransferase (γ-GGT) confirmed the reliability of the study design. CONCLUSION The OBS is negatively associated with HF prevalence in older adults, and may help prevent HF in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of multiple chronic respiratory diseases. Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) composing of 16 dietary factors and 4 lifestyle factors has been developed to evaluate the effect of oxidants/antioxidants produced by dietary intake and lifestyle habits on the overall oxidative balance. However, the relationships between OBS with asthma, COPD, and asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) are still unclear. METHODS A total of 10,942 adults aged 20 years and older from the 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included in the analyses. ANOVA and chi-square tests were used to compare characteristics between different OBS subgroups.Multiple multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between OBS and asthma, COPD, and ACO.RCS curves were used to describe the dose-response effect of the associations. Subgroup analyses and interaction effects were employed to reflect the stability of the associations. RESULTS In the fully adjusted models, OBS was found to be negatively associated with asthma, COPD, and ACO. OBS at Q2, Q3, and Q4 (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.46-0.97) were negatively associated with the risk of asthma. OBS at Q2 and Q4 were negatively associated with the risk of COPD. OBS at Q2 and Q4 were negatively associated with the risk of ACO. The RCS curves reflected the negative dose-response trend of association. Moreover, the associations were stable in various subgroups. CONCLUSION The negative associations between OBS and asthma, COPD, and ACO were found in American adults, providing evidence for dietary and lifestyle prevention.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is an essential contributor to the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A systematic assessment of diet patterns and lifestyle with the oxidative balance score (OBS) to reflect oxidative stress levels will help predict the risk of COPD. This study conducted a cross-sectional analysis to assess the link between OBS and COPD. 5162 participants were collected from 2013 to 2018 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to assess the relationship between OBS and COPD prevalence. The linearity of the association was explored using smoothed curve fitting. In addition, further subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted to ascertain the consistency of the relationship across diverse populations. Results of the multivariate logistic regression models indicated a negative association between OBS and the odds of COPD prevalence. Each incremental unit in OBS correlated with a 3% reduction in the odds of COPD in the fully adjusted model (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95-0.99). Further analysis by OBS tertiles indicated that individuals in the highest OBS tertile (T3) had a 17% lower probability of COPD compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1) in the fully adjusted model (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.64-0.97). The smoothed curve fitting supported the negative association between OBS and COPD. Subgroup analyses revealed that the protective effect of OBS was notably pronounced among the non-hypertensive and non-diabetic populations. These findings suggest a negative link between OBS and COPD, underscoring the importance of antioxidant-rich diets and lifestyles in preventing COPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antioxidant and pro-oxidant dietary patterns and lifestyle changes have been considered to play a crucial role in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. We conducted this study to investigate the underlying association between oxidative balance score (OBS) and H. pylori infection in the US population. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study according to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2000), and included individuals with complete information about dietary intake and H. pylori serologic testing results. In the present study, we used multivariate logistic regression analysis, smoothed curve fitting, subgroup analyses, and Cox proportional hazards modeling based on demographic and clinical variables to examine the relationship between OBS and H. pylori infection. RESULTS A total of 3413 individuals participated in our analysis with an average age of 32.31 years. The prevalence of H. pylori infection in the study population was 29.77%. By performing smooth curve fitting analysis, we observed an approximately linear relationship between OBS and H. pylori infection, indicating that lower OBS was associated with higher risk of H. pylori infection, especially in over 60 years of age and non-Hispanic white populations. All-cause mortality was also found lower in individuals with higher OBS levels. CONCLUSION In the US population, increased levels of OBS were associated with a reduced risk of H. pylori infection and decreased all-cause mortality. More and further work is still needed to elucidate the precise mechanism of the association between OBS and H. pylori infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Given the potential association between oxidative stress, periodontitis and dental caries, whether dietary supplementation with antioxidants is beneficial for periodontitis and dental caries has been widely reported, but remains controversial. This study aims to clarify these relationships through two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS Circulating antioxidants (copper, selenium, zinc, ascorbate, β-carotene, lycopene, retinol and vitamin E) were derived from absolute circulating antioxidants and circulating antioxidant metabolites. Summary data of periodontitis and dental caries were obtained from two separate databases, respectively. We performed inverse-variance weighted (IVW) analysis separately in different databases, followed by meta-analysis. The robustness of results was examined by sensitivity analyses, including three complementary MR methods, heterogeneity and pleiotropy tests, and PhenoScanner query. RESULTS IVW analysis showed that elevated levels of absolute circulating retinol reduced the risk of periodontitis (GLIDE: OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.18-0.95, p = .038, power = 100%; FinnGen: OR = 0.15, 95% CI = 0.04-0.54, p = .004, power = 100%). The pooled OR for periodontitis risk per unit increase of retinol is 0.30 (95% CI = 0.15-0.61, p = .001, I2 = 40.3%, power = 100%). No significant associations were noted for genetically predicted circulating antioxidants and dental caries risk. The sensitivity analyses yielded similar estimates. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that a negative causality between circulating retinol and periodontitis risk, and null linkage between circulating antioxidants and dental caries risk, suggesting potential strategies for the prevention and control of periodontitis.

Abstract
Background Unintentional falls are known to be a leading cause of injury mortality among older Chinese adults, yet we lack data on the most recent trends in related mortality. To address this, we used the latest nationally representative data from China to examine trends in elderly unintentional fall mortality by place (urban/rural), sex (men/women), and age group (65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and ≥85 years) from 2010 to 2021. Methods We retrieved mortality data from the Chinese Health Statistical Yearbook (2010-21) and population data from the Chinese Population Census (2010, 2020). Using line graphs, we examined mortality trends over time. We fitted a joinpoint regression model to detect periods experiencing significant changes and calculated the average and specific annual percentage change of mortality rates to quantify significant changes in the mortality of the elderly due to unintentional falls. Results Between 2010 and 2021, the age-standardised mortality rate from unintentional falls increased from 45.7 to 67.8 per 100 000 population among Chinese adults aged 65 years and older. Subgroup analyses by sex and place showed similar changing patterns to the overall mortality trends. The joinpoint regression identified certain recent periods that saw significant increases in mortality among adults aged 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and 80-84 years. During the study period, men and individuals living in rural areas generally had higher unintentional fall mortality rates than women and people living in urban areas (mortality rate ratios: 1.09-1.21 for men vs. women and 1.01-1.27 for rural areas vs. urban areas). Notably, the differences between urban and rural areas, and those between men and women, were consistent across the three younger age groups (65-69, 70-74, and 75-79 years) studied, but reduced in the two oldest age groups (80-84 and ≥85 years). Conclusions The age-standardised mortality rate from unintentional falls increased between 2010 and 2021 among Chinese adults aged 65 years or older, with wide variations across years. Unintentional fall mortality has recently increased among adults aged 65 to 84 years. Differences between urban and rural areas, as well as between men and women, deserve the attention of injury researchers and policymakers.

Abstract
Introduction Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was devised to quantify the overall oxidative state, integrating pro-oxidant and antioxidant influences from both dietary intake and lifestyle practices. The aim of this study was to delve into the relationship between the OBS and CKD within the adult population of the United States. Methods Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2009-2018, we derived the OBS from 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors. We employed weighted multivariate regression to probe the link between OBS and CKD. Additionally, we undertook subgroup analyses and applied Restricted Cubic Spline Regression (RCS) for further data analyses. Results This study encompassed 19,444 participants. Logistic regression analysis consistently demonstrated a protective effect of higher OBS on CKD. In Model 3, each unit increase in OBS was associated with a 2% reduction in the risk of CKD (95% CI: 0.97-0.99, p < 0.001) and a 4% reduction in the risk of reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (95% CI: 0.95-0.98, p < 0.001). The highest OBS quintile (Q4) also showed significant reductions in the risk of CKD (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.53-0.82, p < 0.001) and reduced eGFR (OR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.37-0.69, p < 0.001) in Model 3. RCS analysis revealed a linear relationship between OBS and CKD. Subgroup analyses indicated significant associations between OBS and CKD in most subgroups, except for those without hypertension or with cardiovascular disease. Additionally, interaction analyses demonstrated that age, hypertension, and diabetes significantly modify the association between OBS and CKD risk. Conclusion An elevated OBS, reflecting a predominance of antioxidants, correlates with a diminished CKD risk in the American adult demographic. These insights emphasize the potential influence of oxidative equilibrium on the development of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is closely associated with hypertensive outcomes. The oxidative balance score (OBS) measures oxidative stress exposure from dietary and lifestyle elements. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between OBS and mortality in hypertensive patients. METHODS This study included 7823 hypertensive patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2014. Several models, including Cox regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), Kaplan‒Meier survival analysis, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses, were exploited to investigate the relationship between OBS and the risk of mortality. RESULTS Controlling for all potential confounders, a significantly inverse association was observed between elevated OBS and all-cause [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.85-0.95] and cardiovascular mortality (HR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.75-0.95). With adjustment for covariates, significant associations between lifestyle OBS and mortality risks diminished, whereas associations between dietary OBS and these mortality risks remained robust (all-cause mortality: HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86-0.96; cardiovascular mortality: HR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76-0.96). RCS demonstrated a linear relationship between OBS and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk (P nonlinear = 0.088 and P nonlinear = 0.447, respectively). Kaplan‒Meier curves demonstrated that the mortality rate was lower with a high OBS (P < 0.001). The consistency of the association was demonstrated in subgroup and sensitivity analyses. RCS after stratification showed that among current drinkers, those with higher OBS had a lower risk of mortality compared with former or never drinkers. CONCLUSIONS In hypertensive individuals, there was a negative association between OBS and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Encouraging hypertensive individuals, especially those currently drinking, to maintain high levels of OBS may be beneficial in improving their prognosis.

Abstract
Background To investigate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS), cardiovascular mortality (CVM), and all-cause mortality (ACM) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods We included 6,119 participants with T2DM from the 2005-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The status of CVM and ACM of participants was followed through December 31, 2019. Multivariable Cox regression models, Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank test, restricted cubic spline regression, and subgroup analysis, were used to evaluate the relationship between OBS, CVM, and ACM. Results During a median of 100.9 months follow-up, 1,790 ACM cases had occurred, 508 of which were due to cardiovascular disease. The T2DM participants were divided into four groups based on the quartiles of OBS. Participants with Q4 tended to be younger, financially better-off, married, highly educated, had lower alcohol consumption rates, were non-smokers, and exhibited a lower likelihood of ACM and CVM. In multivariate Cox regression models, compared with the patients with Q4, those with Q1 had a 30% increased risk for ACM (Q1, reference; Q4, HR: 0.70, 95%CI: 0.58-0.86) and a 43% increased risk for CVM (Q1, reference; Q4, HR: 0.57, 95%CI: 0.36-0.88). The restricted cubic spline regression models have no nonlinear relationship between OBS, CVM, and ACM. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that patients with Q4 had a lower risk of ACM and CVM (log-rank P < 0.05). Conclusions We find that ACM and CVM increase with higher OBS in T2DM patients. Moreover, there are linear relationships between OBS, ACM, and CVM.

Abstract
AIMS To identify correlations between omega-3 intake and incidence of diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS This was a cross-sectional study using data from participants over age 40 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008. Metrics included participants' intake of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically three types of representative polyunsaturated fatty acids, DR prevalence, and demographic characteristics. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between omega-3 intake and DR. RESULTS Of the 1243 participants included in this study, omega-3 intake was lower in patients with DR relative to those without DR. Of the three polyunsaturated fatty acids within the omega-3 fatty acid family that we focused on, participants without DR consumed more docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) than those with DR. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Higher omega-3 intake was associated with a decreased risk of DR. In a crude model, the odds ratio (OR) was 0.548 (95% CI 0.315, 0.951; p = 0.033). In the fully adjusted model of omega-3 (model II), the adjusted OR was 0.525 (95% CI 0.306, 0.901; p = 0.021). DPA and DHA were also associated with a decreased risk of DR. In the full adjustment model (model II) of DPA and DHA, the adjusted ORs were 0.0002 (95% CI 0.000, 0.166; p = 0.014) and 0.293 (95% CI 0.105, 0.819; p = 0.020). Subgroup analysis showed that the protective effect of omega-3 against DR was more significant in younger patients (p value = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS In this cross-sectional study of the U.S. general population, we found that increased intake of omega-3 and its components, specifically DPA and DHA were negatively associated with DR incidence. This suggests that omega-3 may be a potential protective factor for DR and may help to prevent or delay the onset and progression of DR.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the association between the oxidative balance score (OBS) and endometriosis. Methods This cross-sectional study used four cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (1999-2000, 2001-2002, 2003-2004, and 2005-2006). OBS involved 16 dietary nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, including 5 pro-oxidants and 15 anti-oxidants. According to weighted quartiles, the OBS was divided into four categories: < 12.54, 12.54-18.70, 18.71-24.68, and > 24.68. Endometriosis was diagnosed based on a question from the reproductive health questionnaire. Weighted multivariate logistic analysis was used to investigate the association between OBS and endometriosis. Subgroup analysis was performed based on menstrual regularity and female hormone use. Results A total of 5095 women were included, with 1140 (22.37%), 1232 (24.18%), 1224 (24.02%), and 1499 (29.42%) women in the OBS < 12.54, of 12.54-18.70, of 18.71-24.68, and > 24.68 categories, respectively. After adjusting age, race, family poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), education level, uterine fibroids, menstrual regularity, oophorectomy, female hormone use, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and steroid drug, a high OBS (> 24.68) was found to be associated with lower odds of endometriosis [odds ratio (OR) = 0.70, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.50-0.97, P = 0.033] compared to a low OBS (< 12.54). The similar result was also found in women with irregular menstruation (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37-0.91, P = 0.020) and with female hormone use (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.52-0.98, P = 0.037). Conclusion A high OBS was associated with lower odds of endometriosis, especially in women with irregular menstruation and female hormone use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is a key predictor of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) served as a tool to evaluate the systemic status of oxidative stress. However, evidence on the link between OBS and severe abdominal aortic calcification (SAAC) is currently inadequate. This study aims to establish this correlation in the US adult population, contributing valuable insights to the understanding of cardiovascular health. METHODS AND RESULTS In our study with 2745 participants from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we analyzed both OBS and AAC score data. Logistic regression and smooth curve fitting were used to investigate the relationship between OBS and SAAC. The overall prevalence of severe abdominal aortic calcification disease was 9.1%. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that higher oxidative balance scores were associated with a lower risk of SAAC. After adjusting for potential confounders (model III), for every 1-point increase in oxidative balance scores, the odds of SAAC decreased by 3% [OR = 0.97, 95% CI= (0.95,0.99), P = 0.03]. The dose-response relationship demonstrated a negative correlation between oxidative balance scores and SAAC (p for nonlinear = 0.368). CONCLUSIONS This study reveals a negative association between oxidative balance scores and severe abdominal aortic calcification in US adults. The implications of these findings merit careful consideration and should be taken into account in the formulation of clinical guidelines and updates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was to investigate the correlation between oxidative balance score (OBS) and the prevalence of kidney stones in the general adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted an analysis using data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) project, including 17,988 participants. The OBS was computed based on previous research, combining 16 dietary factors and 4 lifestyle factors. Multiple logistic regressions and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regressions were utilized to explore the associations between OBS and kidney stone prevalence. RESULTS Our analysis included 1,622 adults with kidney stones and 16,366 adults without kidney stones. The average age of participants was 46.86 ± 0.27 years, with 50.72% being male. The median OBS was 22.00 (17.00, 27.00). After adjusting for all covariates, each one-unit increase in OBS was associated with a 3% decrease in kidney stone prevalence (odds ratio [OR] = 0.97 [0.96-0.98], P < 0.001). Moreover, compared to the first quartile, the fourth quartile of OBS (OR = 0.65 [0.50-0.84], P = 0.001) exhibited a negative association with kidney stone prevalence after adjusting for multiple variables. Furthermore, we observed a non-linear negative relationship between OBS and kidney stone prevalence, with inflection points at 18.2 (P for nonlinearity = 0.048). Stratified analysis did not identify any variables significantly affecting the results. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that a higher OBS is associated with a decreased prevalence of kidney stones in the general adult population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a comprehensive metric that assesses the state of a person's oxidative balance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the oxidative balance score and moderate and severe periodontitis in a representative sample of Korean adults. METHODS Healthcare big data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) was used, and 16,489 adults aged ≥19 years were included. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the effect of sex-specific oxidative balance scores on periodontitis. RESULTS In comparison with participants with a lower oxidative balance score, those with a higher oxidative balance score had a lower incidence of moderate and severe periodontitis (p < 0.05). After adjusting for covariates, the oxidative balance score was negatively associated with moderate (odds ratio [OR] = 0.952; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.934-0.971) and severe (OR = 0.958; 95% CI: 0.931-0.986) periodontitis; however, the result was not significant for severe periodontitis in women's (OR = 0.975; 95% CI: 0.934-1.018). Our study showed a statistically significant association between OBS and moderate and severe periodontitis, the small effect size should be interpreted with caution. CONCLUSIONS The oxidative balance score was associated with moderate and severe periodontitis in Korean adults. Therefore, managing this score may help reduce the risk of periodontitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The oxidative balance score (OBS) reflects the overall burden of oxidative stress in an individual, with a higher OBS indicating greater antioxidant exposure. This study aimed to explore the association between constipation and OBS. METHODS Variables were extracted from participants who completed a constipation questionnaire as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2010. The OBS was developed based on dietary and lifestyle factors, encompassing 16 nutrients and 4 lifestyle variables. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were employed to evaluate the association between OBS and constipation. RESULTS After adjusting for all covariates, weighted multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a 4% reduction in the incidence of constipation for each additional unit of OBS (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.95-0.97, p < 0.001). In the OBS subgroup, the risk of constipation significantly decreased compared to that in the lowest quartile (Q2: 0.72, P = 0.024; Q3: 0.59, P < 0.001; Q4: 0.54, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated a significant association between constipation and the oxidative balance score (OBS), particularly dietary OBS, and that an increase in OBS may reduce the risk of developing constipation, in which oxidative stress may play an important role. This finding suggested that dietary modification could be an important approach for preventing constipation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is associated with risk of pathogenesis between rheumatoid arthritis. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a systematic tool to assess the effects of diet and lifestyle in relation to oxidative stress. However, the association between OBS and rheumatoid arthritis has not been reported previously. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the complex association between OBS and rheumatoid arthritis in US adults. METHODS Overall, 9747 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. The exposure variable was OBS, which was scored by 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors. Multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were used to analyze the association between OBS and rheumatoid arthritis. RESULTS Compared to the lowest OBS quartile group (Q1), the multivariate corrected odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) for the highest quartile of OBS (Q4) was 0.69 (0.52-0.90) (p = .013 for trend); furthermore, the RCS showed a negative linear relationship between OBS and rheumatoid arthritis. According to subgroup and RCS analyses, there was a significant difference between the association of OBS and with rheumatoid arthritis in terms of gender (p = .049). CONCLUSION In conclusion, high OBS was negatively associated with the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Gender has an effect on OBS in RA. Our results suggest that OBS can be used as a biomarker to predict rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
Objective Oxidative stress is a risk factor for sarcopenia. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a widely employed tool for evaluating the oxidative stress-related exposures from dietary and lifestyle factors. In this study, we aimed to conducted to explore the relationship between OBS and skeletal muscle mass and strength. Methods 6,438 subjects from 2011 to 2018 and 5,414 from 2011 to 2014 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were selected for analysis. The correlations between OBS and skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength were investigated using multivariate logistic regression and linear regression analysis. Results Compared with lowest OBS, participants with OBS in the highest quartile had lower risk of low skeletal muscle mass (OR = 0.173 (0.120 ~ 0.248), p < 0.0001) and low handgrip strength (β = 0.173 (0.120 ~ 0.248), p = 0.011). The negative association also were found between dietary/lifestyle OBS and skeletal muscle mass (OR = 0.268 (0.178 ~ 0.404), p < 0.0001; OR = 0.231 (0.130 ~ 0.410), p < 0.0001) and handgrip strength (β = 1.812 (0.555 ~ 3.071), p = 0.008; β = -2.255 (-3.430 ~ -1.079), p < 0.001) independently. The positive association remains significant, especially among men and those with higher education levels by subgroup analysis. Conclusion All of these results indicated a negative association between OBS and low skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength. An antioxidant-rich diet and healthy lifestyle are crucial for enhancing skeletal muscle mass and strength.

Abstract
Background Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel indicator of the overall antioxidant/oxidant balance, providing a comprehensive reflection of the body's overall oxidative stress status, with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between OBS with serum uric acid (SUA) and hyperuricemia. Methods Data utilized in this study were sourced from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants under 18 years old, those with ≤16 complete data out of 20 OBS components, incomplete serum uric acid data, and missing covariates were excluded from the analysis. OBS was computed by evaluating 16 nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, encompassing 5 pro-oxidants and 15 antioxidants, guided by a priori knowledge of their relationship with oxidative stress. Results A total of 1,5096 individuals were included in our analysis with 49.7% being male, and an average age of 49.05 ± 17.56 years. The mean OBS was 19.76 ± 7.17. Hyperuricemia was present in 19.28% of participants. Due to the right-skewed distribution of the OBS, a natural log transformation was applied to address this issue, and Quartiles of lnOBS 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.10-2.56 (N=3526), 2.64-2.94 (N=3748), 3.00-3.22 (N=4026), and 3.26-3.61 (N=3796), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression showed that higher lnOBS quantiles were correlated with lower serum uric acid levels. Compared with the lowest lnOBS quantile, participants in the highest lnOBS quantile had a significant serum uric acid decrease of 16.94 μmol/L for each unit increase in lnOBS (β=-16.94, 95% CI: -20.44, -13.45). Similar negative associations were observed in the second-highest (β=-8.07, 95% CI: -11.45, -4.69) and third-highest (β=-11.69, 95% CI: -15.05, -8.34) lnOBS quantiles. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia in Quartiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.00, 0.84 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.95), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.88), and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.71), respectively. Compared to Quartile 1, participants in Quartile 4 had a 38% lower prevalence of hyperuricemia. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed that there was a significant dependence of sex between OBS and serum uric acid (p for interaction <0.05), but not hyperuricemia (p for interaction >0.05). Subgroup analysis stratified by age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia showed there is no significant dependence on these negative correlations (all p for interaction >0.05). Conclusions The serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia in US adults exhibited a negative association with OBS. By exploring this connection, our research aims to gain a better understanding of how oxidative balance affects the prevalence of hyperuricemia. This could provide valuable insights for developing preventive strategies and interventions for hyperuricemia. Additional large-scale prospective studies are required to explore the role of OBS in hyperuricemia further.

Heart Lung 2024; 65:84-92. [PMID: 38447328 DOI: 10.1016/j.hrtlng.2024.02.005] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/07/2023] [Revised: 02/07/2024] [Accepted: 02/24/2024] [Indexed: 03/08/2024]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with oxidative stress. Oxidation Balance Score (OBS) can evaluate the oxidation and antioxidant status of the body. However, we found no studies that examined the association between the two. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between OBS and COPD prevalence, and to explore dietary and lifestyle patterns aimed at preventing and delay COPD in adults. METHOD We included 13,909 participants using data from the NHANES. Weighted logistic regression model and weighted restricted cubic spline curve were used to explore the relationship between OBS and COPD. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were used to determine the stability of results. Mediation analysis was employed to assess the effect of inflammatory factors. RESULT In logistic regression model, compared with the lowest quartile of OBS, the highest quartile of OBS, diet OBS, lifestyle OBS and COPD had odd ratios OR(95%CI)=0.67 (0.51, 0.89), OR (95% CI) = 0.71 (0.55, 0.93), and OR (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.26, 0.58) respectively. The restricted cubic spline curve reveals that OBS and dietary OBS exhibit an L-shaped curve in relation to COPD prevalence, while lifestyle OBS shows a negative correlation curve with COPD prevalence. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis proved the robustness of the association. Mediation analysis demonstrated that inflammatory factors mediate the association of OBS on the prevalence of COPD. CONCLUSION The increase of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of COPD, but excessive OBS and dietary OBS were associated with an inapparent decrease or even increased risk of COPD.

Li Y, Liu Y. Adherence to an antioxidant diet and lifestyle is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality among adults with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: evidence from NHANES 1999-2018. Front Nutr 2024; 11:1361567. Abstract
Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) stands a prevalent chronic liver condition significantly influenced by oxidative stress. We investigated the unclear relationship between antioxidant-rich diet and lifestyle and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence rate and mortality in adult patients with NAFLD. Methods This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHAENS) spanning from 1999 to 2018 to investigate the association between adherence to an antioxidant-rich diet and lifestyle and the cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence rate and mortality in adult patients with NAFLD. The study employed the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) to define antioxidant diet and lifestyle. Results Including 8,670 adult patients with NAFLD, the study revealed an inverse association between OBS and the prevalence of most CVD conditions. Fully adjusted models demonstrated that each unit increase in diet OBS, lifestyle OBS, and overall OBS corresponded to a 2, 7, and 2% reduction in all-cause mortality, respectively. In models 2, findings revealed that lifestyle Q2 and Q3 were linked to reduced cancer mortality, whereas diet and overall OBS did not exhibit an association. Additionally, Stratified analysis revealed that age (<45 years) and education level (> high school) significantly influenced the association between the OBS and the prevalence of CVD. Conclusion These results underscore the protective link between adherence to an antioxidant diet and lifestyle and a diminished prevalence of CVD and mortality in adults with NAFLD, particularly among younger and higher-educated populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although oxidative stress is a recognized factor of inflammation, the correlation between oxidative balance score (OBS), a biomarker indicating the balance of oxidation and antioxidant, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an immune system disease that tends to occur in women, remains unexplored. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential association between OBS and RA in women. METHODS Observational surveys were performed by employing information extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the period 2007-2018. Various statistical techniques were employed to investigate the association between OBS and RA, encompassing multivariable logistic regression analysis, subgroup analyses, smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis. RESULTS The study included 8219 female participants, including 597 patients with RA. The results showed that higher Total OBS (TOBS) significantly correlated with lower RA prevalence in the entirely modified model [odd ratio (OR) = 0.968; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.952 to 0.984; P = 0.0001]. Dietary OBS (DOBS) and lifestyle OBS (LOBS) also negatively correlated with RA. This association was remarkably consistent across TOBS subgroups by age, race, education level, family poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), hypertension and diabetes. Smooth curve fitting and threshold effect analysis also revealed the linear relationship between OBS and RA. CONCLUSIONS Overall, OBS was negatively associated with RA in female. This study suggested that an antioxidant diet and lifestyle may be promising measures to prevent RA in female.

Heliyon 2024; 10:e27426. [PMID: 38500974 PMCID: PMC10945180 DOI: 10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e27426] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/17/2023] [Revised: 02/27/2024] [Accepted: 02/28/2024] [Indexed: 03/20/2024] Open
Abstract
Purpose The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying migraine remain elusive, with oxidative stress hypothesized as a potential etiological factor. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a comprehensive tool for assessing the impact of diet and lifestyle on oxidative stress, thereby gauging an individual's overall antioxidant capacity. In this cross-sectional study, we explored the correlation between OBS and migraine prevalence among a cohort of US adults. Methods We analyzed data from 6195 participants aged 20 years and above, drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 1999 and 2004. We employed multiple logistic regression, coupled with sensitivity analyses, to investigate the relationship between OBS and migraine. Subsequent subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed to assess the consistency of this association across the population. Results Multiple logistic regression revealed an inverse relationship between OBS and the likelihood of experiencing migraines. Specifically, individuals in the highest OBS quartile exhibited a significantly reduced migraine risk compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.98, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.97-0.99, P = 0.0001). Furthermore, restricted cubic spline curves indicated a non-linear association between dietary OBS and migraine incidence (non-linear P = 0.0258). Discussion Our findings suggest that adherence to an antioxidant-rich diet may be an effective strategy for mitigating migraine, potentially by influencing oxidative balance.

Abstract
It is well recognized that oxidative stress contributes to chronic stress-induced cytotoxicity, which is a major factor in the progression of many diseases, including periodontitis and diabetes. Formulas based on natural extracts with antioxidant properties are alternative treatment perspectives in the management of such diseases. The aim of our study was to assess how carvacrol and magnolol influence periodontitis associated with diabetes in Wistar rats. Ninety Wistar rats were distributed in nine groups: I-control group; II-diabetes group (D); III-periodontitis group (P); IV-periodontitis and diabetes group (PD); V-periodontitis and diabetes with vehicle alone (PDV); VI-periodontitis and diabetes treated with carvacrol (PDC); VII-periodontitis and diabetes treated with magnolol (PDM); VIII-periodontitis and diabetes treated with carvacrol and magnolol (PDCM); IX-healthy group with vehicle alone (CV). Blood malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and catalase activity levels (CAT) were measured as indicators of oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity, respectively. Where diabetes and periodontitis were induced, MDA was augmented and CAT was depleted significantly. Whether given alone (PDM) or in combination with carvacrol (PDCM), magnolol significantly decreased MDA. Between the PDM group and the PDCM group, there were no notable differences. In Wistar rats with periodontitis related to diabetes, topical use of hydrogels containing magnolol, either alone or in combination with carvacrol, may reduce oxidative stress.

Associations of oxidative balance score with total abdominal fat mass and visceral adipose tissue mass percentages among young and middle-aged adults: findings from NHANES 2011-2018. Front Nutr 2023; 10:1306428. [PMID: 38115885 PMCID: PMC10728272 DOI: 10.3389/fnut.2023.1306428] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/03/2023] [Accepted: 11/07/2023] [Indexed: 12/21/2023] Open
Abstract
Objective This study aimed to explore the association of the oxidative balance score (OBS) with total abdominal fat mass (TAFM) and visceral adipose tissue mass (VATM) percentages among young and middle-aged U.S. adults. Methods Young and middle-aged adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018 were included. Analysis of variance and Rao-Scott adjusted chi-square tests were used to compare the characteristics across quartiles of OBS. Univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression models were employed to explore the relationship between OBS and the risks of high TAFM or high VATM percentage in the general population and subgroups, while the interaction effects were tested with a likelihood test. Weighted restricted cubic spline analyses were utilized to assess the non-linear association of OBS with TAFM and VATM percentages. Results The final sample included 8,734 young and middle-aged non-institutionalized U.S. adults representing 134.7 million adults. Compared with adults in the first quartile of OBS, those with higher OBS were less likely to have a high TAFM percentage; the ORs and 95% CI for adults in the second, third, and highest quartiles of OBS were 0.70 (0.53-0.94), 0.49 (0.36-0.60), and 0.25 (0.18-0.36), respectively. Similar trends were observed in the association between OBS and VATM percentages. Moreover, similar effects were confirmed in the sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses according to demographic characteristics. Regarding the OBS subclass, higher dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS were also correlated with decreased ORs of high TAFM and VATM percentages. Conclusion This study strongly suggests that higher OBS, as well as higher dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS, are significantly correlated with lower risks of abdominal obesity and visceral fat accumulation. The findings highlight the importance of an antioxidant-rich diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in reducing the risks.

Abstract
The impact of environmental pollutant exposure on periodontitis has raised significant concerns. But the association between exposure to multiple polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and periodontitis still remained unclear. Our study investigated the association of exposure to multiple PAHs with periodontitis. A total of 1880 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study. Urinary samples of the participants exposed to six PAHs, namely, 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OHN), 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OHN), 3-hydroxyfluorene (3-OHF), 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-OHF), 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (1-OHPhe), and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPyr), were investigated. Multiple logistic regression, restricted cubic spline, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were employed to identify the association between PAH exposures and periodontitis. The dose-response analysis exhibited a gradual increase in the periodontitis risk with an increase in multiple PAHs. After adjustment for several potential confounders, the odds ratio of the highest quartile (Quartile 4) was 1.648 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.108-2.456, P = 0.014, P-t = 0.017) for 2-OHN, 2.046 (95%CI 1.352-3.104, P < 0.001, P-t = 0.005) for 3-OHF, 1.996 (95% CI 1.310-3.046, P = 0.001, P-t = 0.003) for 2-OHF, 1.789 (95% CI 1.230-2.604, P = 0.002, P-t = 0.003) for 1-OHPhe, and 1.494 (95% CI 1.025-2.181, P = 0.037, P-t = 0.021) for 1-OHPyr compared with that of the lowest quartile (Quartile 1). BKMR illustrated that the overall effect of the PAH mixture was positively related to periodontitis. Mediation analysis identified blood neutrophils as a partial mediator of 3-OHF and 2-OHF. Exposure to multiple PAHs was positively associated with periodontitis in US adults, and blood neutrophils mediate the effects of 3-OHF and 2-OHF therein.

Liu Y, Chen M. Dietary and lifestyle oxidative balance scores are independently and jointly associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a 20 years nationally representative cross-sectional study. Front Nutr 2023; 10:1276940. [PMID: 37920290 PMCID: PMC10619002 DOI: 10.3389/fnut.2023.1276940] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/13/2023] [Accepted: 10/06/2023] [Indexed: 11/04/2023] Open
Abstract
Background Oxidative stress is an important contributor to the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but whether dietary and lifestyle pro- and antioxidants may have combined or independent effects on NAFLD, and advanced liver fibrosis (AHF) remains unclear. We aimed to elucidate the relationship between a well-established oxidative balance score (OBS) and NAFLD/AHF. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. We included adult participants with complete data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018. Survey-weighted adjusted multivariate regression analyses were used to examine the association of all OBS with NAFLD/AHF. A combination of restricted cubic splines, mediation analysis, stratified analysis, and sensitivity analysis were used to further elucidate these associations. Results We included 6,341 eligible adult participants with prevalence of NAFLD and AHF of 30.2 and 13.9%, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, the highest quartile of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS were associated with 65, 55, and 77% reduced risk of NAFLD, respectively, compared with the reference population, respectively. However, all OBS were not associated with the risk of AHF. All OBS were nonlinearly associated with risk of NAFLD and had a more pronounced reduced risk for OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS after exceeding 26, 21, and 5 points, respectively. OBS may exert a protective effect indirectly through inflammation, oxidative stress, and glycolipid metabolism markers. Stratification and sensitivity analyses demonstrate the robustness of our findings. Conclusion All OBS were nonlinearly and negatively associated with NAFLD risk. These effects may exert indirectly through inflammation, oxidative stress, and glycolipid metabolism markers.
