Abstract
Mycobacterium ulcerans causes Buruli Ulcer, a neglected infectious skin disease that typically progresses from an early non-ulcerative lesion to an ulcer with undermined edges. If not promptly treated, these lesions can lead to severe disfigurement and disability. The standard antibiotic regimen for Buruli Ulcer treatment has been oral rifampicin combined with intramuscular streptomycin administered daily for 8 weeks. However, there has been a recent shift toward replacing streptomycin with oral clarithromycin. Despite the advantages of this antibiotic regimen, it is limited by low compliance, associated side effects, and refractory efficacy for severe ulcerative lesions. Therefore, new drug candidates with a safer pharmacological spectrum and easier mode of administration are needed. Statins are lipid-lowering drugs broadly used for dyslipidemia treatment but have also been reported to have several pleiotropic effects, including antimicrobial activity against fungi, parasites, and bacteria. In the present study, we tested the susceptibility of M. ulcerans to several statins, namely atorvastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin and fluvastatin. Using broth microdilution assays and cultures of M. ulcerans-infected macrophages, we found that atorvastatin, simvastatin and fluvastatin had antimicrobial activity against M. ulcerans. Furthermore, when using the in vitro checkerboard assay, the combinatory additive effect of atorvastatin and fluvastatin with the standard antibiotics used for Buruli Ulcer treatment highlighted the potential of statins as adjuvant drugs. In conclusion, statins hold promise as potential treatment options for Buruli Ulcer. Further studies are necessary to validate their effectiveness and understand the mechanism of action of statins against M. ulcerans.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is a lethal disease and remains one of the top ten causes of mortality by an infectious disease worldwide. It can also result in significant morbidity related to persistent inflammation and tissue damage. Pulmonary TB treatment depends on the prolonged use of multiple drugs ranging from 6 months for drug-susceptible TB to 6-20 months in cases of multi-drug resistant disease, with limited patient tolerance resulting from side effects. Treatment success rates remain low and thus represent a barrier to TB control. Adjunct host-directed therapy (HDT) is an emerging strategy in TB treatment that aims to target the host immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in addition to antimycobacterial drugs. Combined multi-drug treatment with HDT could potentially result in more effective therapies by shortening treatment duration, improving cure success rates and reducing residual tissue damage. This review explores the rationale and challenges to the development and implementation of HDTs through a succinct report of the medications that have completed or are currently being evaluated in ongoing clinical trials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tuberculosis is a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Statins could be associated with a lower risk of some infectious diseases, including tuberculosis. Statins could reduce the risk of latent tuberculosis infection and active tuberculosis, acting as an adjuvant in treating tuberculosis. This study aimed to determine if statins reduce the risk of active tuberculosis. METHODS We systematically analyzed 8 databases from inception to December 2021. We included articles without language restriction if they met our inclusion and exclusion criteria and the PECO strategy (Population: adults without active pulmonary tuberculosis; Exposure: treatment with any statin; Comparator: no use of statins; Outcome: active tuberculosis). Odds Ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using random- effects models regardless of heterogeneity quantified by Cochran's Q and I2 statistics. We performed subgroup analyses according to the participants' diabetic status and follow-up length (≤10 years or >10 years). RESULTS Twelve articles reporting observational studies involving 3.038.043 participants, including at least 32.668 cases of active tuberculosis. Eight reported retrospective cohort studies, three nested case-control study, and one was a case control study.According to our meta-analysis, statins may reduce the risk of active tuberculosis, in the general population (OR 0.66; 95% CI, 0.54-0.81), in non-diabetic (OR 0.66; 95% CI, 0.54-0.80) and in diabetic patients (OR 0.65; 95% CI, 0.49-0.87). This protective effect did not differ according to the participants' diabetic status nor follow-up length (test for subgroup differences I2=0). We found significant clinical and methodological heterogeneity. Similarly, the forest plot, and the I2 and Chi2 statistics suggested considerable statistical heterogeneity (I2=95%, p<0.05, respectively). Of the 12 included studies, 9 were at low risk of bias and 3 were at high risk of bias. Similarly, according to the funnel plot, it is very likely that there are important publication biases. CONCLUSION Statin use may significantly reduce the risk of tuberculosis in the general population, diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised when interpreting these conclusions, due to the quality of the evidence, the heterogeneity of the studies, the presence of bias, and the difficulty in extrapolating these results to populations of other races and ethnicities.

Abstract
Tuberculosis disease is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is estimated that 10 million people have developed tuberculosis disease globally, leading to 1.4 million deaths in 2019. Treatment of tuberculosis has been especially challenging due to the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) and extensive drug-resistant (XDR-TB) tuberculosis. In addition to drug-resistant genotypes, the standard treatment of tuberculosis by first-line agents is also challenging due to toxicity and costs. In the last four decades, there have only been two new anti-tuberculosis agents—bedaquiline and delamanid. Therefore, shorter, safer, and more cost-effective therapies are needed to adequately treat tuberculosis. In this review, we explore various adjuvants such as glutathione, everolimus, vitamin D, steroid, aspirin, statin, and metformin and their usefulness in reducing the burden of tuberculosis. Glutathione, everolimus, aspirin, and metformin showed the most promise in alleviating the burden of tuberculosis. Despite their potential, more clinical trials are needed to unequivocally establish the effectiveness of these adjuvants as future clinical therapies. Methods: The journals for this review were selected by conducting a search via PubMed, Google Scholar, and The Lancet. Our first search included keywords such as “tuberculosis” and “adjuvant therapy.” From the search, we made a list of adjuvants associated with tuberculosis, and this helped guide us with our second online database search. Using the same three online databases, we searched “tuberculosis” and “respective therapy.” The adjuvants included in the paper were selected based on the availability of sufficient research and support between the therapy and tuberculosis. Adjuvants with minimal research support were excluded. There were no specific search criteria regarding the timing of publication, with our citations ranging between 1979 to 2021.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, remains a global health threat despite recent advances and insights into host-pathogen interactions and the identification of diverse pathways that may be novel therapeutic targets for TB treatment. In addition, the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant Mtb strains led to a low success rate of TB treatments. Thus, novel strategies involving the host immune system that boost the effectiveness of existing antibiotics have been recently suggested to better control TB. However, the lack of comprehensive understanding of the immunomodulatory effects of anti-TB drugs, including first-line drugs and newly introduced antibiotics, on bystander and effector immune cells curtailed the development of effective therapeutic strategies to combat Mtb infection. In this review, we focus on the influence of host immune-mediated stresses, such as lysosomal activation, metabolic changes, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and immune mediators, on the activities of anti-TB drugs. In addition, we discuss how anti-TB drugs facilitate the generation of Mtb populations that are resistant to host immune response or disrupt host immunity. Thus, further understanding the interplay between anti-TB drugs and host immune responses may enhance effective host antimicrobial activities and prevent Mtb tolerance to antibiotic and immune attacks. Finally, this review highlights novel adjunctive therapeutic approaches against Mtb infection for better disease outcomes, shorter treatment duration, and improved treatment efficacy based on reciprocal interactions between current TB antibiotics and host immune cells.

Abstract
Introduction: Tuberculosis, a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. The current treatment is a combination antimicrobial therapy administered for 6-9 months. It is important to find therapeutic strategy to shorten the treatment during and strengthen the host immune response against MTB.Areas covered: There is evidence that MTB uses cholesterol in the host macrophage to infect and survive inside the host macrophage. Statins inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol and aid in reducing the levels of cholesterol in human, which have been associated with better outcome in infectious diseases. In this narrative review, we discuss recent studies that investigated the effects of statins on the prevention or treatment of TB infection.Expert opinion: The evaluation of the published evidence suggests that statins may be beneficial in the treatment of patients with TB infections. Future studies may focus not only on the beneficial effects of statins, but also on distinguishing the effects of different statins.

Abstract
Background: Tuberculosis remains one of the leading causes of mortality among the infectious diseases, while statins were suggested to confer anti-infective efficacy in experimental studies. We aimed to evaluate the association between statin use and tuberculosis infection in a meta-analysis. Method: Relevant studies were obtained via systematically search of PubMed and Embase databases. A random or a fixed effect model was applied to pool the results according to the heterogeneity among the included studies. Subgroup analyses according to the gender and diabetic status of the participants were performed. We assessed the quality of evidence with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: Nine observational studies were included. Significant heterogeneity was detected among the studies (p for Cochrane's Q test <0.001, I2 = 93%). The GRADE approach showed generally low quality of evidence. Pooled results showed that statin use was associated with reduced active tuberculosis infection (risk ratio [RR]: 0.60, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.45 to 0.75, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses showed that the negative association between statin use and active tuberculosis infection was consistent in men (RR: 0.63, p = 0.01) and women (RR: 0.58, p < 0.001), in participants with (RR: 0.63, p = 0.02) and without diabetes (RR: 0.50, p < 0.001), in retrospective cohort studies (RR: 0.56, p = 0.02), prospective cohort studies (RR: 0.76, p = 0.03), nested case-controls studies (RR: 0.57, p < 0.001), and case-control studies (RR: 0.60, p < 0.001), and in studies with statin used defined as any use within 1 year (RR: 0.59, p < 0.001) or during follow-up (RR: 0.61, p < 0.001). Significant publication bias was detected (p for Egger's regression test = 0.046). Subsequent “trim and fill” analyses retrieved an unpublished study to generate symmetrical funnel plots, and meta-analysis incorporating this study did not significantly affect the results (RR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.68 to 0.76, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Statin use may be associated with reduced active tuberculosis infection. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to confirm the potential preventative role of statin use on tuberculosis infection.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. TB). It is transmitted through respiratory droplets. Increased cholesterol level is a predisposing factor for TB. M. TB uses cholesterol in the host macrophage membranes to bind and enter the macrophages. Statins are the drugs that are prescribed to hyperlipidemic patients to maintain their lipid levels in the normal range, thereby reducing the risk of stroke and cardiovascular events. Moreover, statins aid in reducing the levels of cholesterol in human macrophages. Therefore, a reduction in the membrane cholesterol minimizes the entry of TB pathogen inside macrophages. Furthermore, acting as vitamin D3 analogs and positively influencing pancreatic beta-cell function in a chronic diabetic state, statins minimize the occurrence of M. TB infection among diabetic population as well. This review aims to provide a comprehensive detail of all in vitro, in vivo, and retrospective studies that investigated the effects of statins in relation to the prevention or treatment of TB infection.

Abstract
Background and Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate whether use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) was associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods: The case–control study was conducted to analyze the database between 2000 and 2013. Patients aged 20 to 84 years with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis were selected as the cases (n = 8593). Participants without pulmonary tuberculosis were selected as the controls (n = 43 472). Patients who never had a prescription for SSRIs were defined as never use. Those who ever had a prescription for SSRIs were defined as ever use. Results: The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of pulmonary tuberculosis was 1.03 for patients with ever use of SSRIs (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.93-1.14), compared to never use. The adjusted OR of pulmonary tuberculosis was 1.00 for patients with increasing cumulative duration of SSRI use for every 1 month (95% CI: 0.99-1.00), compared to never use. The adjusted OR of pulmonary tuberculosis was 0.99 for patients with increasing cumulative dosage of SSRI use for every 1 mg (95% CI: 0.99-1.00), compared to never use. Conclusion: No significant association can be detected between SSRI use and pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. No duration-dependent effect or dose-dependent effect of SSRIs use can be detected on the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract
Objectives Animal and ex vitro studies suggested lipid-lowering agents (LLAs) may be used as an adjunct to standard anti- tuberculosis (TB) treatment. No human study has been conducted to date. Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), the current population-based cohort study sought to examine the association between use of LLAs and outcomes of patients with pulmonary TB receiving anti-TB treatment. Methods Using a NHIRD from 2003 to 2010, this population-based cohort study retrospectively examined the association between LLAs (statins or fibrates) and the outcomes of patients with pulmonary TB receiving anti-TB treatment. Results A total of 1452 adult patients newly diagnosed with pulmonary TB during the study period were identified and compared with 5808 matched patients. In the LAA cohort, 1258 received statin, and 295 received fibrate. Compared with patients who did not take LLA, patients who took oral LLAs had similar incidence of treatment completion at 9, 12, and 24 months. Conclusions Neither statins nor fibrates provide clinical benefit superior to that achieved with standard anti-tuberculosis treatment. Future clinical trials should investigate the effects of statins and fibrates on short-course standard anti-TB therapy.

Abstract
The association between tamoxifen use and risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism in women with breast cancer has been reported in the Western population. The study aimed to evaluate the association between tamoxifen use and deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism in older women with breast cancer in Taiwan.We conducted a retrospective case-control study using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. A total of 281 women subjects with breast cancer aged ≥65 years with newly diagnosed deep vein thrombosis/or pulmonary embolism from 2000 to 2011 were identified as the cases. Additionally, 907 women subjects with breast cancer aged ≥65 years without deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism were randomly selected as the controls. The cases and the controls were matched with age and comorbidities. Ever use of tamoxifen was defined as subjects who had at least a prescription for tamoxifen before index date. Never use of tamoxifen was defined as subjects who never had a prescription for tamoxifen before index date. We used the multivariable logistic regression model to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism associated with tamoxifen use.After adjustment for confounding variables, the adjusted OR of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism was 1.95 for subjects with ever use of tamoxifen (95% CI 1.45, 2.62), as compared with never use of tamoxifen. In addition, atrial fibrillation (adjusted OR 3.73, 95% CI 1.89, 7.35) and chronic kidney disease (adjusted OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.06, 2.80) were also associated with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.Tamoxifen use is associated with 1.95-fold increased odds of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism among older women with breast cancer in Taiwan.

Abstract
Tuberculosis is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. The current treatment is based on a combination of antimicrobials administered for six months. It is essential to find therapeutic agents with which the treatment time can be shortened and strengthen the host immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. M. tuberculosis needs cholesterol to infect and survive inside the host, but the progression of the infection depends to a large extent on the capacity of the immune response to contain the infection. Statins inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol and have pleiotropic effects on the immune system, which have been associated with better results in the treatment of several infectious diseases. Recently, it has been reported that cells treated with statins are more resistant to M. tuberculosis infection, and they have even been proposed as adjuvants in the treatment of M. tuberculosis infection. The aim of this review is to summarize the immunopathogenesis of tuberculosis and its mechanisms of evasion and to compile the available scientific information on the effect of statins in the treatment of tuberculosis.

Abstract
Impaired lung function is common in people with a history of tuberculosis. Host-directed therapy added to tuberculosis treatment may reduce lung damage and result in improved lung function. An understanding of the pathogenesis of pulmonary damage in TB is fundamental to successfully predicting which interventions could be beneficial. In this review, we describe the different features of TB immunopathology that lead to impaired lung function, namely cavities, bronchiectasis, and fibrosis. We discuss the immunological processes that cause lung damage, focusing on studies performed in humans, and using chest radiograph abnormalities as a marker for pulmonary damage. We highlight the roles of matrix metalloproteinases, neutrophils, eicosanoids and cytokines, like tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin 1β, as well as the role of HIV co-infection. Finally, we focus on various existing drugs that affect one or more of the immunological mediators of lung damage and could therefore play a role as host-directed therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Little research is currently available on the relationship between weight loss and pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. This study aimed to evaluate whether weight loss is an early clinical feature of pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. METHOD This population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program database. There were 6051 subjects aged 20 to 84 years with newly diagnosed weight loss from 2000 to 2012 as the weight loss group, and 24081 randomly selected subjects without weight loss from the same period as the non-weight loss group. The weight loss and the non-weight loss groups were matched by sex, age, and comorbidities. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis at the end of 2013 was evaluated in both groups. A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to evaluate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for association of pulmonary tuberculosis with weight loss. RESULTS The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis was 15.2-fold higher in the weight loss group than in the non-weight loss group during the first 3 months of follow-up (22.8 vs. 1.50 per 1000 person-years, 95% CI 13.7, 16.9). After adjusting for covariables, the subsequent HR of pulmonary tuberculosis was 2.36 for the weight loss group (95 % CI 1.88, 2.97), compared with the non-weight loss group. CONCLUSION Although our finding is not novel, it does support the notion that weight loss is significantly associated with increased hazard of pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. The risk was found to be particularly high during the first 3 months of follow-up.

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors use and hepatocellular carcinoma in Taiwan. Methods: Using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program, we conducted a case-control study to identify 4901 subjects aged 20 years and more with newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma in 2000–2013 as the cases. We randomly selected 19604 subjects aged 20 years and more without hepatocellular carcinoma as the controls. Both cases and controls were matched with sex and age. Ever use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors was defined as a subject who had at least a prescription for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors before index date. Never use was defined as a subject who never had a prescription for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors before index date. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for hepatocellular carcinoma associated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors use was estimated by the multivariable logistic regression model. Results: Among subjects with any one of the comorbid conditions associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, the adjusted OR of hepatocellular carcinoma was 0.89 (95% CI 0.75, 1.06) for subjects with ever use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, comparing with never use. Conclusion: The findings indicate that among subjects with any one of the comorbid conditions associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, no significant association can be detected between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors use and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background and Objectives: Limited research focuses on the risk of ischemic cerebrovascular disease associated with use of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4 inhibitors) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Taiwan. This study aimed to investigate the association between DPP-4 inhibitors use and the first episode of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Methods: We designed a case-control study using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. There were 1999 type 2 diabetic subjects aged 20-84 years with the first episode of ischemic cerebrovascular disease from 2000 to 2013 as the cases, and 7996 sex- and age-matched, randomly selected type 2 diabetic subjects aged 20-84 years without any type of cerebrovascular diseases as the matched controls. We estimated the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of ischemic cerebrovascular disease associated with cumulative duration of DPP-4 inhibitors use by the multivariable logistic regression model. Results: After adjustment for confounding variables, the adjusted OR of ischemic cerebrovascular disease was 0.96 (95% CI 0.95, 0.97) in subjects with ever use of DPP-4 inhibitors as increase in use duration for every 1 month, compared with never use. The sub-analysis disclosed that the adjusted ORs of ischemic cerebrovascular disease were 1.57 (95% CI 1.36, 1.80) for subjects with cumulative duration of DPP-4 inhibitors use <1 year, and 0.70 (95% CI 0.57, 0.87) for subjects with cumulative duration of DPP-4 inhibitors use ≥1 year, compared with never use. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that DPP-4 inhibitors use correlates with relative risk reduction of the first episode of ischemic cerebrovascular disease in type 2 diabetic patients in a duration-dependent response. The beneficial effect will be marked when DPP-4 inhibitors use is ≥1 year.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Previous studies showed that zolpidem use could be associated with increased cancer risk, but the role of zolpidem on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk remains undetermined. The study purpose was to examine the association between HCC risk and zolpidem use in Taiwan. Methods: Using the database from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program, we designed a case-control study which consisted of 77986 subjects aged 20 years or older with newly diagnosed HCC as the case group, and 77986 subjects without HCC as the control group, from 2000 to 2011. Ever use of zolpidem was defined as a subject who had at least a prescription for zolpidem before the index date. Never use was defined as a subject who did not have a prescription for zolpidem before the index date. The association between HCC risk and zolpidem use was determined by the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) in a multivariable logistic regression model. Results: After adjustment for confounding factors, the adjusted OR of HCC was 1.05 (95% CI 0.97, 1.13) for subjects with ever use of zolpidem, compared with never use of zolpidem. The adjusted OR of HCC was 1.01 for subjects with increasing cumulative duration of zolpidem use for every 1 year (95% CI 0.99, 1.03), compared with never use of zolpidem. Conclusion: There is no significant association between HCC risk and zolpidem use. There is no duration-dependent effect of zolpidem use on HCC risk.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: There are inconsistent results about the association between ischemic cerebrovascular disease and tamoxifen use in women with breast cancer. The study aimed to evaluate the association between the risk of ischemic cerebrovascular disease and tamoxifen use in older women with breast cancer in Taiwan. Methods: We designed a retrospective, nationwide, case-control study using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. A total of 800 female subjects with breast cancer aged ≥65 years with the first episode of ischemic cerebrovascular disease from 2000 to 2011 were identified as the cases. Additionally, 2,876 female subjects with breast cancer aged ≥65 years without any type of cerebrovascular diseases were selected as the control subjects. The cases and the control subjects were matched with age and comorbidities. Ever use of tamoxifen was defined as a subject who had at least a prescription for tamoxifen before the index date. Never use of tamoxifen was defined as a subject who never had a prescription for tamoxifen before the index date. We used the multivariable logistic regression model to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for ischemic cerebrovascular disease associated with tamoxifen use. Results: After adjusting for confounding variables, the adjusted OR of ischemic cerebrovascular disease was 2.5 for subjects with ever use of tamoxifen (95% CI 2.10, 2.97), compared with never use of tamoxifen. In addition, the adjusted OR of ischemic cerebrovascular disease was 1.15 (95% CI 1.10, 1.21) in subjects with ever use of tamoxifen as increase in use duration per 1 year. The adjusted OR of ischemic cerebrovascular disease was 2.54 (95% CI 2.03, 3.17) in subjects with ever use of tamoxifen as increase in dosage per 1 mg. Conclusions: Tamoxifen use is significantly associated with 2.5-fold increased odds of ischemic cerebrovascular disease among older women with breast cancer in Taiwan. There are duration-dependent and dose-dependent effects of tamoxifen use on the risk of ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the incidence and hazard ratio (HR) of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with head and neck cancer in Taiwan.This population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. There were 2522 subjects aged 20 to 84 years with newly diagnosed head and neck cancer as the head and neck cancer group between 2000 and 2012, and 10,064 randomly selected sex- and age-matched subjects without any cancer as the noncancer group. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis at the end of 2013 was estimated in both groups. A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the HR and 95% confidence interval (CI) for pulmonary tuberculosis being associated with head and neck cancer.The overall incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis was 2.86-fold greater in the head and neck cancer group than that in the noncancer group (4.70 vs 1.64 per 1000 person-years, 95% CI, 2.53-3.24). After adjusting for confounding factors, the adjusted HR of pulmonary tuberculosis became 2.90 for the head and neck cancer group (95% CI, 2.11-3.99), compared with the noncancer group. In addition, male (adjusted HR 2.27, 95% CI, 1.29-4.00) and age (increase for 1 year, adjusted HR 1.06, 95% CI, 1.05-1.08) were associated with pulmonary tuberculosis.Head and neck cancer is significantly associated with 2.90-fold increased hazard of pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan, compared with the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Tuberculosis (TB) and depression were major public health issues worldwide and the mutual causative relationships between them were not exhaustive. This study was performed to explore the association between depression, comorbidities, and the risk of pulmonary TB in Taiwan. METHODS The cohort study used the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. The depression group included 34,765 subjects aged 20-84 years with newly diagnosed depression from 2000 to 2012, and the non-depression group included 138,187 randomly selected subjects without depression. Both depression and non-depression groups were matched with respect to sex, age, and comorbidities. We explored the incidence of pulmonary TB at the end of 2013 in both the groups and used multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model to explore the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the risk of pulmonary TB associated with depression. RESULTS The overall incidence of pulmonary TB was 1.16-fold greater in the depression group than that in the non-depression group (1.52 vs. 1.31 per 1,000 person-years, 95% CI 1.12, 1.21). The multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that the adjusted HR of pulmonary TB was 1.15 for the depression group (95% CI 1.03, 1.28), compared with the non-depression group. CONCLUSION Depression is associated with 1.15-fold increased hazard of pulmonary TB in Taiwan.
