Bidirectional crosstalk between the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and immunotherapy: A bibliometric study

Immunotherapy has recently attracted considerable attention. However, currently, a thorough analysis of the trends associated with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and immunotherapy is lacking. In this study, we used bibliometric tools to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress in EMT-immunotherapy research. A total of 1,302 articles related to EMT and immunotherapy were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC). The analysis indicated that in terms of the volume of research, China was the most productive country (49.07%, 639), followed by the United States (16.89%, 220) and Italy (3.6%, 47). The United States was the most influential country according to the frequency of citations and citation burstiness. The results also suggested that Frontiers in Immunotherapy can be considered as the most influential journal with respect to the number of articles and impact factors. "Immune infiltration," "bioinformatics analysis," "traditional Chinese medicine," "gene signature," and "ferroptosis" were found to be emerging keywords in EMT-immunotherapy research. These findings point to potential new directions that can deepen our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the combined effects of immunotherapy and EMT and help develop strategies for improving immunotherapy.

Knowledge domains and emerging trends in radiotherapy in oesophageal cancer from 2004 to 2023: a bibliometric analysis and visualization study

Esophageal cancer (EC) is a malignant tumour with high morbidity and mortality rates. Recent studies have shown that much progress has been made in the research of radiotherapy in EC. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of radiotherapy in EC through bibliometrics. Publications related to radiotherapy in EC from 2014 to 2023 were searched on the web of science core collection database. VOSviewers, CiteSpace and R package 'bibliometrix' were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis. In total, 4258 articles from 76 countries led by China and the USA were included. The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences-Peking Union Medical College has the highest number of publications. International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics is the most popular journal and also the most co-cited journal in this field. These publications come from 21 972 authors among which Liao Zhongxing had published the most papers and Cooper JS was co-cited most often. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and strategies based on it are the main topics in this research field. 'IMRT' and 'immunotherapy' are the primary keywords of emerging research hotspots. This is a bibliometric study that comprehensively summarizes the research trends and developments of radiotherapy in EC. This information identifies recent research frontiers and hot directions, which will provide a reference for scholars studying radiotherapy in EC.

A bibliometric analysis of the knowledge related to mental health during and post COVID-19 pandemic

Objective

COVID-19 led to a horrific global pandemic, with strict lockdowns and prolonged indoor stays increasing the risk of mental health problems, affecting people of different ages, genders, regions, and types of work to varying degrees. This study provides a bibliometric summary of the knowledge map related to mental health during and post COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

Publications related to mental health during and post COVID-19 pandemic were searched in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database through March 19, 2024. After screening the search results, the literature included in the final was first quantitatively analyzed using GraphPad Prism software and then visualized using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R (the bibliometrix package).

Results

The 7,047 publications from 110 countries were included, with the highest number of publications from China and the United States, and the number of publications related to mental health during and post the COVID-19 pandemic increased annually until 2023, after which it began to decline. The major institutions were University of Toronto, University of London, Harvard University, King's College London, University College London, University of California System, University of Melbourne, Institut National De La Sante Et De La Recherche Medicale (Inserm), Mcgill University, and University of Ottawa; Frontiers in Psychiatry had the highest number of publications, and the Journal of Affective Disorders had the highest number of co-citations; 36,486 authors included, with Xiang, Yu-Tao, Cheung, Teris, Chung, Seockhoon published the most papers, and World Health Organization, Kroenke K, and Wang CY were the most co-cited; epidemiologically relevant studies on mental health related to COVID-19, and the importance of mental health during normalized epidemic prevention and control are the main directions of this research area, especially focusing on children's mental health; "pandemic," "sars-cov-2," "epidemic," "depression," "coronavirus anxiety," "anxiety," "longitudinal," "child," "coronavirus anxiety," "longitudinal," "child," and "coronavirus" are the top keywords in recent years.

Conclusion

This comprehensive bibliometric study summarizes research trends and advances in mental health during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic. It serves as a reference for mental health research scholars during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, clarifying recent research preoccupations and topical directions.

A comprehensive bibliometric analysis (2000-2022) on the mapping of knowledge regarding immunotherapeutic treatments for advanced, recurrent, or metastatic cervical cancer

Background

Despite extensive literature on therapeutic strategies for cervical cancer, a bibliometric analysis specifically focused on immunotherapy for advanced, recurrent, or metastatic (A/R/M) cervical malignancies remains unexplored. This study aims to address this gap by presenting a comprehensive overview that includes general characteristics, research focal points, the trajectory of evolution, and current emerging trends in this under-researched area.

Methods

A systematic search was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) to identify articles related to A/R/M cervical cancer published between 2000 and 2022. Citespace and VOS viewer were the primary tools used to identify research focal points, intriguing future patterns, and to evaluate contributions and co-occurrences among authors, institutions, countries, and journals.

Results

A total of 1,001 original articles were identified, involving 6,387 authors from 66 countries and 1,474 institutions, and published across 366 academic journals. The United States contributed most significantly. The most productive researcher was Van der Burg SH from Leiden University Medical Center. The International Journal of Cancer and Cancer Research were identified as the most productive and influential journals, respectively. Analysis of co-citation clusters highlighted 25 clusters, primarily focusing on potential predictive biomarkers, dendritic cell-based tumor vaccines, therapeutic HPV vaccinations, peptide-based cancer vaccines, tumor immune microenvironments, and adoptive cell transfer (ACT). The latest significant trends in A/R/M cervical cancer immunotherapy research included ACT, CAR-T, and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), as revealed by keyword and reference burst detection.

Conclusion

This pioneering study provides a detailed landscape of immunotherapy research in A/R/M cervical cancer. It underscores the importance of global collaboration, enriches our understanding of the immunology of A/R/M cervical cancer, expands on potential beneficiaries of immunotherapy, and explores clinical applications of various therapies, including therapeutic vaccines, adoptive cell transfer, and ICIs, particularly in combination with established treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy.

Knowledge mapping of chronic insomnia: a bibliometric analysis (2000-2023)

BACKGROUND

Recently, significant scientific research breakthroughs have been witnessed in the treatment of chronic insomnia. However, it seems that there is currently no bibliometric analysis of this. Therefore, we hope to comprehensively review and analyze the scholarly system and research focus in the field of chronic insomnia treatment through bibliometric methods.

METHODS

Between 2000 and 2023, we explored various papers in relation to the treatment of chronic insomnia in the Web of Science Core Collection(WOSCC) database. Subsequently, the collected papers were subjected to bibliometric analysis utilizing CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the "bibliometric" package in R language.

RESULTS

With China and the United States(USA) among them, a total of 2937 papers were published across 49 countries. Publications related to the treatment of chronic insomnia were increasing year by year. The Laval University, Washington University, Pittsburgh University, and Stanford University were key research institutions. The journal Sleep was widely popular in the field and was also one of the most cited journals. These papers came from 148 authors, with Morin, Charles M., Roth, Thomas, Espie, Colin A., Harvey, Allison G., and Buysse, Daniel J. publishing the most papers and Morin, cm being co-cited the most. The treatment process of chronic insomnia can be divided into three main stages: drug intervention, diseases related to chronic insomnia, and cognitive behavioral therapy and mental health. Keywords such as "children and adolescents", "novel coronavirus pneumonia" (COVID-19), "mental health" and "heart failure" have become the focus of current research.

CONCLUSIONS

We carried out a detailed bibliometric review of the development trends and research results of chronic insomnia research through this study for the first time. The information it provides reveals recent research hotspots and cutting-edge issues, providing valuable reference materials for researchers focusing on the treatment of chronic insomnia.

A bibliometric analysis of cardiotoxicity in cancer radiotherapy

Background

Radiotherapy, a primary treatment for malignant cancer, presents significant clinical challenges globally due to its associated adverse effects, especially with the increased survival rates of cancer patients. Radiation induced heart disease (RIHD) significantly impacts the long-term survival and quality of life of cancer survivors as one of the most devastating consequences. Quite a few studies have been conducted on preclinical and clinical trials of RIHD, showing promising success to some extent. However, no researchers have performed a comprehensive bibliometric study so far.

Objective

This study attempts to gain a deeper understanding of the focal points and patterns in RIHD research and to pinpoint prospective new research avenues using bibliometrics.

Methods

The study group obtained related 1554 publications between 1990 and 2023 on the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) through a scientific search query. Visualization tools like CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized to realize the visual analysis of countries, authors, journals, references and keywords, identifying the hotspots and frontiers in this research field.

Results

After collecting all the data, a total of 1554 documents were categorized and analyzed using the above tools. The annual number of publications in the field of RIHD shows a continuous growth trend. In 2013, there was a significant rise in the number of linked publications, with the majority of authors being from the USA, according to the statistics. Among all the journals, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY BIOLOGY PHYSICS published the most relevant papers. Cluster analysis of the references showed that research on RIHD has focused on breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and Hodgkin's lymphoma (also among the three main clusters), preclinical research, childhood cancer, heart dose, coronary artery disease, etc, which are also hot topics in the field. High-frequency keywords in the analysis include risk factors, cancer types, heart disease, survival, trials, proton therapy (PT), etc.

Conclusion

Future research on RIHD will mostly focus on thoracic cancer, whose exact cause is yet unknown, with preclinical trials playing an important role. Preventing, consistently monitoring, promptly diagnosing, and timely treating are crucial to decreasing RIHD and extending the life expectancy of cancer survivors.

Visualization and analysis of mapping knowledge domains for optic neuritis: a bibliometric research from 2013 to 2022

PURPOSE

To explore the global research trends, hotspots and frontiers of optic neuritis (ON) over the past decade through qualitative and quantitative analysis of bibliometrics.

METHODS

Publications on ON from 2013 to 2022 were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). VOSviewer and CiteSpace were mainly used to facilitate bibliometric analysis and visualization.

RESULTS

A total of 3027 papers were retrieved from peer-reviewed publications and the annual research output increased over time. Neurosciences neurology was the most published area. The USA was the most productive and influential country, and in the focus of international cooperation. University College London was the most productive organization and Charite Medical University of Berlin had the largest number of cooperating partners. Paul F contributed the largest number of publications and Wingerchuk DM ranked first among the co-cited authors. Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders was the most prolific journal publishing ON research. The most co-cited references mainly focused on the diagnostic criteria for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). The keywords formed the following four clusters: the pathophysiology of MS-ON; the autoantibody markers and diagnostic criteria of NMOSD-ON and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein associated disorder-ON (MOGAD-ON); the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of ON; and the treatment of ON.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometrics analysis showed a systematic view of the evolutionary process, research hotspots, and future directions of ON research. It can provide insights for ON research and valuable information for neuro-ophthalmologic specialists to evaluate research policies and promote international cooperation.

Knowledge mapping of UMOD of English published work from 1985 to 2022: a bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

UMOD is exclusively produced by renal epithelial cells. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) suggested that common variants in UMOD gene are closely connected with the risk of CKD. However, a comprehensive and objective report on the current status of UMOD research is lacking. Therefore, we aim to conduct a bibliometric analysis to quantify and identify the status quo and trending issues of UMOD research in the past.

METHODS

We collected data from the Web of Science Core Collection database and used the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology, the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology and Microsoft Excel 2019 to perform bibliometricanalysis and visualization.

RESULTS

Based on the data from the WoSCC database from 1985 to 2022, a total of 353 UMOD articles were published in 193 academic journals by 2346 authors from 50 different countries/regions and 396 institutions. The United States published the most papers. Professor Devuyst O from University of Zurich not only published the greatest number of UMOD-related papers but also is among the top 10 co-cited authors. KIDNEY INTERNATIONAL published the most necroptosis studies, and it was also the most cited journal. High-frequency keywords mainly included 'chronic kidney disease', 'Tamm Horsfall protein' and 'mutation'.

CONCLUSIONS

The number of UMOD-related articles has steadily increased over the past decades Current UMOD studies focused on Biological relevance of the UMOD to kidney function and potential applications in the risk of CKD mechanisms, these might provide ideas for further research in the UMOD field.

Treatment-prognostication-adjustment a new therapeutic idea by analyzing T cell immune checkpoint in tumor microenvironment by algorithm: A bibliometric analysis

To evaluate the temporal and spatial distribution of the knowledge network about tumor microenvironment and prognoses and explore new research hot spots and trends. Articles and reviews on tumor microenvironment and prognoses in the Web of Science journal from January 1999 to April 2022 were included. We used the CiteSpace and VOSviewer software to analyze the knowledge network composed of journals, institutions, countries, authors, and keywords. Frontiers in Immunology, Cancers, and Frontiers in Oncology have published more than 10% of articles in this field. China and the United States have contributed the most articles. Fudan University and Sun Yat-Sen University are the most active institutions. The authors in this field work closely; Zhang Wei and Douglas have made outstanding contributions. The three main research areas of tumor microenvironment and prognoses are microenvironment, prognosis, and immunotherapy. Until 2020, the main keywords were endothelial growth factor and adhesion. In the past three years, survival analysis, immune cell infiltration, and prediction model have been used. It can be seen that the focus in this field has shifted from tumor cell behavior and directly related molecules to prognosis prediction and non-tumor cells in the microenvironment. The future research trend may be to study the changes in the tumor microenvironment to predict the prognosis and guide the treatment. VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Microsoft Excel 2019 were used to conduct a comprehensive visual analysis of the research on tumor environment and prognoses and provide valuable reference materials for researchers.

Maxillary Protraction: A Bibliometric Analysis

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this analysis was to investigate the historical development, current status, and research hot spots related to maxillary protraction in the treatment of maxillary hypoplasia.

METHODS

The term "TS = maxillary protraction" was used to search for articles in the Web of Science Core Collection at the library of Capital Medical University. The results were analysed using CiteSpace6.2.R1 software, including the examination of annual publication trends and analysis of author, country, institution, and keywords.

RESULTS

A total of 483 papers were included in this study. The annual publications showed an overall increasing trend. The top 5 authors with the most published papers were Lorenzo Franchi, Tiziano Baccetti, Seung-Hak Baek, Paola Cozza, and U Hagg. The top 5 countries with the highest publication counts were the US, Turkey, South Korea, Italy, and China. The top 5 institutions in terms of the number of published papers were the University of Florence, the University of Michigan, Kyung Hee University, Seoul National University, and Gazi University. The top 3 journals with the most citations were the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Angle Orthodontist, and the European Journal of Orthodontics. Furthermore, "Maxillary protraction," "Class III malocclusion," and "Maxillary expansion" were the most common keywords.

CONCLUSIONS

The effective age range for maxillary protraction has been expanded with the introduction of skeletal anchorage and the combination of maxillary expansion and protraction. Skeletal anchorage offers significant advantages over dental anchorage, but there is a need for further research to further substantiate its stability and safety. In recent years, the positive effects of maxillary protraction on the nasopharyngeal area have been well established, but its impact on the oropharyngeal area remains a topic of debate. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct further investigations into the effects of maxillary protraction on the oropharyngeal area and explore the factors that influence different outcomes.

Knowledge mapping of acupoint sensitization and acupoint specificity: a bibliometric analysis

Objective

The relationship between acupoint sensitization and acupoint specificity is a topic of significant interest in acupuncture research. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that needling pain sensitive acupoints yields superior therapeutic outcomes compared to traditional acupoints, particularly in the context of pain disorders. However, there is a lack of bibliometric analysis in acupuncture area. Therefore, the objective of this study is to offer a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots pertaining to acupoint sensitization and acupoint specificity.

Methods

The search for publications pertaining to acupoint sensitization and acupoint specificity was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from its inception until August 11, 2023. Subsequently, bibliometric analyses were carried out using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, R software (Bibliometrix package), and GraphPad Prism software.

Results

This study includes 4,940 articles from 72 countries, with China and the United States being the leading countries. The number of publications related to acupoint sensitization and specificity has been increasing annually. Major research institutions involved in this field include the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kyung Hee University, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and China Medical University, among others. "Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine" is the most popular journal in acupuncture field, and "PAIN" is the most co-cited journal. Publications are contributed by 20,325 authors from all over the world, with Wu Huangan, Fang Jianqiao, Lin Yi-Wen, Liu Huirong, and Chen Rixin having published the most articles. Han Ji-Sheng is the most cited author in this research area. The main directions include the study of temperature specificity of acupoints, the diagnosis of acupoint sensitization diseases, and the study of the mechanism of acupoint sensitization. The most listed keywords in recent years are "TRPV1," "signaling pathway," and "diagnosis."

Conclusion

This is the first bibliometric study to comprehensively summarize research trends and advances in acupoint sensitization and acupoint specificity, and the information highlights recent research preliminary and main directions that serve as a reference for acupoint sensitization and acupoint specificity research.

A bibliometric analysis and visualization of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease from 2012 to 2021

As a common chronic liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has attracted increasing attention in the past decade. Nevertheless, there are few bibliometric analyses that systematically study this field as a whole. This paper explores the latest research progress and future research trends of NAFLD through the method of bibliometric analysis. The articles related to NAFLD, published from 2012 to 2021 in the Web of Science Core Collections, were searched on February 21, 2022, using relevant keywords. Two different scientometrics software tools were used to conduct the knowledge maps of NAFLD research field. A total of 7975 articles on NAFLD research were included. From 2012 to 2021, the publications related to NAFLD increased by year. China ranked on the top of the list with 2043 publications, and the University of California System emerged as the premier institution in this field. PLOs One, Journal of Hepatology and Scientific Reports became the prolific journals in this research field. Co-cited reference analysis revealed the landmark literature in this research field. In terms of potential hotspots, the burst keywords analysis revealed that liver fibrosis stage, sarcopenia, and autophagy will become the focus of future NAFLD research. The annual output of the global publications in the field of NAFLD research showed a strong upward trend. Research in the field of NAFLD in China and America is more mature than in other countries. Classic literature lays the foundation for research, and multi-field studies provide the new development directions. And besides, fibrosis stage, sarcopenia and autophagy research are the hot spots and frontiers of this field.

Global trends in indocyanine green fluorescence navigation in the field of gastric cancer: bibliometrics and knowledge atlas analysis

Background

Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence navigation can enhance the visualization of gastric cancer (GC) lesions, increase the lymph node detection rate, and reduce the incidence of anastomotic leakage in the treatment of GC. It thus holds considerable potential for application in GC clinical surgery and has attracted widespread research interest. The purpose of this study was to visualize the current topics and emerging trends in research regarding ICG in GC.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for articles relevant to the use of ICG in GC. The resulting information was then analyzed from a bibliometric and knowledge graph analysis perspective using CiteSpace, Scimago Graphica, and R Studio so that the key trends and hot spots in research within this field could be identified and visualized.

Results

Ultimately, 1,385 papers from 58 countries or regions published from 1991 to 2022 were included in this study. The largest number of publications were from China, followed by Japan and the United States. High-yield institutions were concentrated in Asian countries, especially China. The top publication contributors were Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Li Y and Bang YJ ranked first among the top 10 most productive authors and top 10 most cocited authors, respectively. World Journal of Gastroenterology was the most productive academic journal on ICG in GC, while Cancer Research was the most commonly cocited journal. The keyword "indocyanine green" was among the top 5 keywords, and will likely remain a popular topic in future research. Furthermore, the emerging themes including surgery, biopsy, lymphadenectomy, dissection, and gastrectomy have attracted increasing attention.

Conclusions

Current research hotspots in this area focus on the clinical implementation of ICG in precision surgery for GC. Given the imaging tracer characteristics of ICG and its utility in GC surgery, the optimization and application of ICG-guided precision surgery techniques for GC will be a research hot spot going forward.

Inherited Metabolic Diseases from Past to Present: A Bibliometric Analysis (1968-2023)

Bibliometric studies on inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) do not exist in the literature. Therefore, our research aims to conduct a bibliometric study to determine the current status, trending topics, and missing points of publications on IMDs. Between 1968 and 2023, we conducted a literature search with the keyword "inherited metabolic disease" in the SCOPUS database. We included research articles in medicine written in English and published in the final section. We created our data pool using VOSviewer, SciMAT, and Rstudio software programs for the bibliometric parameters of the articles that met the inclusion criteria. We performed a bibliometric analysis of the data with the R package "bibliometrix" and BibExcel programs. We included 2702 research articles published on IMDs. The top three countries that have written the most articles in this field are the USA (n = 501), the United Kingdom (n = 182), and China (n = 172). The most preferred keywords by the authors were: newborn screening (n = 54), mutation (n = 43), phenylketonuria (n = 42), children (n = 35), genetics (n = 34), and maple syrup urine disease (n = 32). Trending topics were osteoporosis, computed tomography, bone marrow transplantation in the early years of the study, chronic kidney disease, urea cycle disorders, next-generation sequencing, newborn screening, and familial hypercholesterolemia in the final years of the study. This study provides clinicians with a new perspective, showing that molecular and genetic studies of inherited metabolic diseases will play an essential role in diagnosis and treatment in the future.

Characterization of global research trends and prospects on platinum-resistant ovarian cancer: a bibliometric analysis

Background

In the last decades, growing attention has been focused on identifying effective therapeutic strategies in the orphan clinical setting of women with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC), generating thousands of original articles. However, the literature involving bibliometric analysis of PROC has not been published yet.

Objective

This study hopes to gain a better understanding of the hot spots and trends in PROC by conducting a bibliometric analysis, as well as identify potential new research directions.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) for PROC-related articles published between 1990 and 2022. CiteSpace 6.1.R2 and VOS viewer 1.6.18.0 were primarily utilized to evaluate the contribution and co-occurrence relationships of various countries and regions, institutes, and journals and to identify research hotspots and promising future trends in this research field.

Results

A total of 3,462 Web of Science publications were retrieved that were published in 671 academic journals by 1135 authors from 844 organizations in 75 countries and regions. The United States was the leading contributor in this field, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was the most productive institution. Gynecologic Oncology was the most productive journal, while the Journal of Clinical Oncology was the most cited and influential. Co-citation cluster labels revealed the characteristics of seven major clusters, including synthetic lethality, salvage treatment, human ovarian-carcinoma cell line, PARP inhibitor resistance, antitumor complexes, folate receptor, and targeting platinum-resistant disease. Keywords and references burst detection indicated that biomarkers, genetic and phenotypic changes, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy were the most recent and most significant aspects of PROC research.

Conclusion

This study conducted a comprehensive review of PROC research using bibliometric and visual techniques. Understanding the immunological landscape of PROC and identifying the population that can benefit from immunotherapy, especially in combination with other therapeutic options (such as chemotherapy and targeted therapy), will continue to be the focal point of research.

Current status and trends in quantitative MRI study of intervertebral disc degeneration: a bibliometric and clinical study analysis

Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the function of noninvasive quantitative evaluation, providing unique advantages in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) assessment. Although studies exploring the field for domestic and international scholars are increasingly being published, there is a lack of systematic scientific measurement and clinical analysis of the literature in this field.

Methods

Articles published from the respective database establishment to September 30, 2022, were obtained from the Web of Science core collection (WOSCC), PubMed database, and ClinicalTrials.gov. The scientometric software (VOSviewer 1.6.18, CiteSpace 6.1.R3, Scimago Graphica, and R software) were used for bibliometric and knowledge graph visualization analysis.

Results

We included 651 articles from the WOSCC database and 3 clinical studies from ClinicalTrials.gov for literature analysis. With the passage of time, the number of articles in this field gradually increased. The United States and China were the top 2 countries in terms of the number of publications and citations, and Chinese publications lacked international cooperation and exchange. The author with the most publications was Schleich C, while the author with the most citations was Borthakur A, who have both made important contributions to research in this field. The journal publishing the most relevant articles was Spine, and the journal with the most mean times cited per study was Radiology, both of which are the authoritative journals in this field. Keyword co-occurrence, clustering, timeline view, and emergent analysis revealed that recent studies in this field have focused on quantifying the biochemical components of the degenerated intervertebral disc (IVD). There were few available clinical studies. The more recent clinical studies mainly used molecular imaging technology to explore the relationship between different quantitative MRI sequence values and the IVD biomechanical environment and biochemical components content.

Conclusions

The study provided a knowledge map of quantitative MRI for IDD research in terms of countries, authors, journals, cited literature, and keywords through bibliometric analysis, and systematically sorted the current status, hotspots, and clinical research features in the field to provide a reference for future research.

Research hotspots and trends of microRNAs in intervertebral disc degeneration: a comprehensive bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in various pathological processes, such as proliferation, growth, and apoptosis, of intervertebral disc (IVD) cells and play an important role in the development of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Although some studies have reported the role of miRNAs in IDD, scientific econometric analysis in this field is not available.

OBJECTIVES

We designed this study to describe the current research trends and potential mechanisms associated with the role of miRNAs in IDD and to provide new ideas for future research in this field.

METHODS

We conducted a bibliometric analysis of the publications on the role of miRNAs in IDD included in the Web of Science core collection database to elucidate the current research trends in this field. The potential mechanisms were constructed using the Arrowsmith project.

RESULTS

We found that the number of miRNAs and IDD-related publications increased over the years. China was the most important contributor to research in this field. The top three institutions in terms of number of articles published were Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Xi'an Jiao Tong University. Shanghai Jiao Tong University had the highest number of citations. Experimental and thermal medicine had the maximum number of documents, and Cell promotion had the most citations. The journal with the most mean times cited per study was Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. The author Wang K had the highest number of publications, and Wang HQ had the highest number of citations. These two authors made important contributions to the research in this field. The keyword analysis showed that recent studies have focused on miRNAs regulating nucleus pulposus cell apoptosis and proliferation. Moreover, we revealed the potential mechanisms of miRNAs associated with IDD, including miRNAs regulating the extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, mediating cartilage endplate (CEP) degeneration, and participating in inflammatory responses.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrated the knowledge map of miRNAs and IDD-related research through bibliometric analysis and elucidated the current research status and hotspots in this field. The mechanisms by which miRNAs regulate the apoptosis and proliferation of degenerated IVDs, promote ECM degradation, mediate CEP degeneration, and participate in inflammatory responses should be explored in further studies.

Mapping research performance and hotspots on nanoparticles in cardiovascular diseases

Nanoparticles have broad prospects and profound academic significance in cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to comprehensively summarize the global scientific achievements of nanoparticles in cardiovascular diseases research. Articles on the application of nanoparticles in cardiovascular diseases published from 2002 to 2021 were retrieved from the science citation index expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection, and knowledge maps were generated by Cite Space, VOS viewer, and Hist Cite for further bibliometric analysis. A total of 4321 records were retrieved, and only reviews and articles were retained with a total of 4258 studies. The number of publications on nanoparticles in the cardiovascular field has steadily increased from 2002 to 2021. China and the US contribute the most to this field, producing nearly all the most influential authors and institutions in the top 10 list. The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Harvard University have obtained many high-quality research results. Targeted drug delivery via nanoparticles, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis are research hotspots. This is the first time to analyze the application of nanoparticles in the cardiovascular field by using multiple bibliometric software. This study provides evidence for researchers to understand the hotspots and directions in this area.

Sustainable extraction of ligustilide and ferulic acid from Angelicae Sinensis Radix, for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development envisions a rational use of energy and resources in all technological processes. However, in the extraction methods of compounds from medicinal plants and herbs, there is an urgent to reduce the use of organic solvents and increase the energy efficiency of these methods. Therefore, a sustainable extraction method (enzyme and ultrasonic co-assisted aqueous two-phase extraction, EUA-ATPE) of simultaneous extraction and separation of ferulic acid and ligustilide from Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR) was developed by integrating enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) with ultrasonic-assisted aqueous two-phase extraction (UAE- ATPE). The effects of different enzymes, extraction temperature, pH, ultrasonic time, liquid-to-materials ratio, etc., were optimized by single-factor experiments and central composite design (CCD). Under the optimum conditions, the highest comprehensive evaluation value (CEV) and extraction yield were obtained by EUA-ATPE. Furthermore, recovery (R), partition coefficient (K), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that enzyme and ultrasonic treatment improved mass transfer diffusion and increased the degree of cell disruption. Besides, the EUA-ATPE extracts have shown great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. Finally, compared to different extraction methods, EUA-ATPE achieved higher extraction efficiency and higher energy efficiency due to the synergistic effect between EAE and UAE-ATPE. Therefore, the EUA-ATPE provides a sustainable method for extracting bioactive compounds from medicinal plants and herbs, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), including SDG-6, SDG-7, SDG-9, SDG-12, and SDG-15.

Bibliometric insights in fournier's gangrene: Research landscapes, turning points, and global trends

Bibliometric and visualization analysis.

Objective

To analyze the research landscapes and hotspots of Fournier's gangrene, and reveal the dynamic changes and development trend of research hotspots for the purpose of providing ideas and a basis for clinical and basic research in this field.

Methods

Research datasets were acquired from the Web of Science. The publication years were limited from January 1, 1900 to August 5, 2022. The bibliometric tools CiteSpace (v5.8) and VOSviewer (v1.6) were used to analyze the data and generate visualization knowledge maps. Trends in annual publications, distribution, H-index status, coauthorships status and research hotspots were analyzed.

Results

According to the search strategy, we identified and enrolled 688 publications regarding to Fournier's gangrene. The number of published papers showed an overall upwards trend. The USA was the largest contributor, ranking first in total publications, citations and the H-index. The top 10 most productive institutions were all from the USA. De Simone B and Sartelli M were the most productive authors. There was close cooperation among countries, but the cooperation among institutions and authors had little contact and poor interactivity. The research hotspots included the pathogenesis factors and treatment. All the identified keywords were divided into 14 clusters, and the label of the latest cluster was "empagliflozin". Prognosis and risk factors, emerging treatment methods, and pathogenesis were at the forefront of the Fournier's gangrene field and were predicted to be the next hot topics.

Conclusion

The research of Fournier's gangrene has made some achievements, but the overall research level is still in the primary stage. The academic cooperation between different institutions and authors needs to be strengthened. At the early stage, the mainstream of research was the infected tissue and site, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of disease, while research on newly discovered sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, adjuvant therapy and prognostic factors may be the main directions in the future.

Knowledge mapping of alternative splicing of cancer from 2012 to 2021: A bibliometric analysis

Background

As a processing method of RNA precursors, alternative splicing (AS) is critical to normal cellular activities. Aberrant AS events are associated with cancer development and can be promising targets to treat cancer. However, no detailed and unbiased study describes the current state of AS of cancer research. We aim to measure and recognize the current state and trends of AS cancer research in this study.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection was used to acquire the articles. Utilizing three bibliometric tools (CiteSpace, VOSviewer, R-bibliometrix), we were able to measure and recognize the influence and collaboration data of individual articles, journals, and co-citations. Analysis of co-occurrence and burst information helped us identify the trending research areas related to AS of cancer.

Results

From 2012 to 2021, the total number of papers on AS of cancer published in 766 academic journals was 3,507, authored by 20,406 researchers in 405 institutions from 80 countries/regions. Research involving AS of cancer genes was primarily conducted in the United States and China; simultaneously, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, and National Cancer Institute were the institutions with strong research capabilities. Scorilas Andreas is the scholar with the most publications, while the most co-citations were generated by Wang, Eric T. Plos One published the most papers on AS of cancer, while J Biol Chem was the most co-cited academic journal in this field. The results of keyword co-occurrence analysis can be divided into three types: molecular (P53, CD44, androgen receptor, srsf3, esrp1), pathological process (apoptosis, EMT, metastasis, angiogenesis, proliferation), and disease (breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric cancer).

Conclusion

Research on AS of cancer has been increasing in intensity over the past decade. Current AS of cancer studies focused on the hallmarks of AS in cancer and AS signatures including diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Among them, the current trends are splicing factors regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition and other hallmarks, aberrant splicing events in tumors, and further mechanisms. These might give researchers interested in this field a forward-looking perspective and inform further research.

Insights into the deriving of rhizosphere microenvironments and its effects on the growth of authentic Angelica sinensis seedlings under continuous monoculture

Purpose

Continuous monoculture leads to deterioration of soil microenvironment, which can severely threat the quality and efficiency of Angelica sinensis (A. sinensis), especially for seedlings production. However, little attention has been paid to investigate how continuous monocropping affects the growth of A. sinensis seedling, rhizosphere microbial populations, and nutrient status.

Methods

A field experiment consisting of two different planting patterns — raising A. sinensis seedlings in reclamation alpine uncultivated meadow (RW) and 1-year continuous monoculture (CC), was carried out at Min County, Gansu province, China.

Result

The results showed that compared with RW, the growth rate and valid quantity of A. sinensis seedlings were significantly reduced by 195.4% and 36.7% in CC, respectively. Continuous monocropping significantly increased the rhizosphere soil pH value during the growing season, ranging from 6.18 to 7.10, while reducing the content of SOM, total N, and available P and K. Glomalin, AMF spore densities, and the number of actinomycetes, ammonifiers, and azotobacter were also decreased by CC. The CC treatment significantly increased the abundance of fungi. The diversity and richness of bacteria in CC were lower than RW. Furthermore, the composition and structure of bacterial and fungal flora also changed and that the abundance of beneficial bacteria decreased, while the abundance of pathogens increased in CC. Thus, CC appeared to completely upend the relationship between soil nutrient availability and microbial activity.

Conclusion

The results illustrated that continuous monoculture led the flora of bacteria and fungi to changed dramatically, with the abundance of beneficial bacteria decreased and the abundance of harmful microbes, such as Lasiosphaeriaceae, Vishniacozyma, Myrmecridium, and Hypocreales, increased. The function of microbial population has changed from “beneficial bacteria dominated” to “harmful microbes dominant.” We concluded that continuous monoculture significantly reduced the growth and the efficiency of A. sinensis seedlings and deteriorated the rhizosphere soil microenvironment by increasing pH and decreasing nutrient availability, as well as altering the function of interactions between soil nutrients and microbial populations, thereby resulting in an unsuitable microenvironment for A. sinensis seedlings growth.

Current status of coronavirus disease 2019 vaccine research based on bibliometric analysis

Vaccination is considered the most effective way to reduce the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Several new vaccines have been manufactured. This study aimed to assess the current status and prospects of COVID-19 vaccine research using a bibliometric analysis. We analyzed 3,954 scientific articles on COVID-19 vaccines in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for bibliometric visualization. Original articles and reviews were used for the analysis. A total of 2,783 (70.38%) studies were published in 2021. The USA contributed the highest, publishing 1,390 articles with 41,788 citations, followed by China and the UK. The USA's primary collaborators were the UK (n = 133), China (n = 87), and Canada (n = 65). The most active institutions were the University of Oxford and Harvard Medical School, while Emory University was the most influential. The Vaccines journal had the most number of publications (402). The most cited journal was the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2021, the focus was on RNA vaccines, attitudes toward vaccination, and hesitancy. In contrast, studies in 2022 focused on vaccine double-blind trials, viral mutations, and antibodies. In the context of rapid virus transmission, vaccine studies on immunogenicity, spike proteins, efficacy, safety, and antibody response have been prioritized. Additional phased clinical trials are needed to determine the effectiveness, acceptance, and side effects of vaccines against mutated strains of the virus.

Knowledge mapping of copper-induced cell death: A bibliometric study from 2012 to 2022

BACKGROUND

The recent article Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins has attracted much attention. Although copper-induced cell death has only recently been formally proposed, it has been studied much earlier. This study aims to undertake a bibliometric analysis of the literature on copper-induced cell death to understand the development of copper-induced cell death better and identify potential new research directions.

METHODS

With the help of Cite Space software, visual analysis is carried out on the annual number of published papers, countries/regions and institutions, journals co-citation, literature co-citation and reference burst, keywords co-occurrence, clustering, and burst.

RESULTS

A search of 770 articles published in English over the last ten years showed a fluctuating trend of increasing numbers of articles. China had the highest number of articles (190% or 24.68%), followed by the USA and India. Inflammation, biological evaluation, nanoparticle, and cu(ii) have been popular research themes in the last 4 years. The keyword clusters are summarized in 8 categories, including exposure, complexe, er stress, cleavage, paraptosis, cancer, glutamate, reactive oxygen species (ROS), expression. The hot topics are mainly focused on the exploration of mechanisms and related diseases, including induced apoptosis, aggregation, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum stress, induced oxidative stress, and inflammation. Parkinson's disease and cancer are 2 diseases that are closely related to copper-induced cell death.

CONCLUSION

This study provides a visual analysis of copper-induced cell death trends and provides some hidden potentially useful information for future research directions.

Hotspots and trends in multiple myeloma bone diseases: A bibliometric visualization analysis

Objective: This study aims to explore the research hotspots and trends of multiple myeloma bone disease in the past 20 years by bibliometric visualization analysis.

Methods: With the Web of Science Core Collection database as the data source, the relevant publications of multiple myeloma bone disease from 2002 to 2021 are retrieved. These data are analyzed using software CiteSpace 5.8.R3 and Scimago Graphica 1.0.24, together with the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology.

Results: A total of 6,168 published research papers, including 4668 articles and 1500 review papers, are included in this study. Generally speaking, annual publications and citations are on the rise, especially in recent 2 years. The majority of these papers are published in the United States, with Mayo Clinic being the greatest contributor. The most productive journal and author are Blood and Terpos E, respectively, while the most frequently co-cited reference, author and journal are Rajkumar et al., 2014, Lancet Oncol, Kyle RA and Blood, respectively. The major research subject categories are oncology and hematology. The “disease diagnosis”, “prognosis evaluation”, “pathogenesis”, “imaging technology” and “targeted therapy” are recent research frontiers. The burst keywords “transplantation”, “progression”, “activation”, “lenalidomide”, “flow cytometry”, “drug resistance”, “management” and “mesenchymal stem cell” reflect the latest research hotspots.

Conclusion: This study reveals the research hotspots and trends of multiple myeloma bone disease through bibliometric visualization analysis, and provides a valuable reference for further research.

Potential therapeutic strategies for quercetin targeting critical pathological mechanisms associated with colon adenocarcinoma and COVID-19

Patients with colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) are at a higher probability of infection with COVID-19 than healthy individuals. However, there is no globally accepted treatment protocol for patients with COAD/COVID-19. Quercetin has been found to have significant antitumor, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects in several studies. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the potential of quercetin as the agent for COAD/COVID-19 and to explore its mechanisms. We used bioinformatics algorithms to obtain COAD/COVID-19-related genes (CCRG) from COAD-related transcriptome data and COVID-related transcriptome sequencing data, and used these genes to construct a COAD prognostic model. We intersected the CCRG with the therapeutic target genes of quercetin and obtained a total of 105 genes (potential target genes of quercetin for the treatment of COAD/COVID-19). By constructing a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, we ascertained FOS, NFKB1, NFKB1A, JUNB, and JUN as possible core target genes of quercetin for the treatment of COAD/COVID-19. Bioinformatic analysis of these 105 genes revealed that the mechanisms for quercetin the treatment of COAD/COVID-19 may be associated with oxidative stress, apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, immune, anti-viral and multiple pathways containing IL-17, TNF, HIF-1. In this study, we constructed a prognostic model of COAD/COVID19 patients by using CCRG and elucidated for the first time the potential target genes and molecular mechanisms of quercetin for the treatment of COAD/COVID-19, which may benefit the clinical treatment of COAD/COVID-19 patients. However, no clinical trials have yet been conducted to further validate the findings, but this will be the future direction of our research.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of the application of nanotechnology in glioma

Background: Glioma is the most prevalent malignant tumor in the central nervous system (CNS). Due to its highly invasive characteristics and the existence of the blood–brain barrier (BBB), the early diagnosis and treatment of glioma remains a major challenge in cancer. With the flourishing development of nanotechnology, targeted nano-therapy for glioma has become a hot topic of current research by using the characteristics of nanoparticles (NPs), such as it is easier to pass the blood–brain barrier, degradable, and aids controllable release of drugs in the brain. The purpose of this study is to visualize the scientific achievements and research trends of the application of nanotechnology in glioma.

Methods: We searched the literature related to glioma nanotechnology on the Web of Science (WOS). The bibliometric and visual analysis was performed mainly using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R software, for countries/regions, authors, journals, references, and keywords associated with the field.

Results: A total of 3,290 publications from 2012 to June 2022 were searched, and 2,041 works of literature were finally obtained according to the search criteria, the number of publications increasing year by year, with an average growth rate (AGR) of 15.22% from 2012 to 2021. China published 694 (20.99%), followed by the United States (480, 20.70%). The institution with the highest number of publications is Fudan Univ (111, 13.16%), and 80% of the top ten institutions belong to China. HUILE GAO (30) and XINGUO JIANG (30) both published the largest number of research studies. STUPP R (412) was the most cited author, followed by GAO HL (224). The degree of collaboration (DC) among countries/regions, research institutions, and authors is 23.37%, 86.23%, and 99.22%, respectively. International Journal of Nanomedicine published the largest number of publications (81), followed by Biomaterials (73). Biomaterials (1,420) was the most cited journal, followed by J Control Release (1,300). The high frequency of keywords was drug delivery (487), followed by nanoparticle (450), which indicates that nanoparticles (NPs) as a carrier for drug delivery is a hot topic of current research and a direction of continuous development.

Conclusion: In recent years, nanotechnology has attracted much attention in the medical field. Cooperation and communication between countries/regions and institutions need to be strengthened in future research to promote the development of nanomedicine. Nanotherapeutic drug delivery systems (NDDS) can enhance drug penetration and retention in tumor tissues, improve drug targeting, and reduce the toxic side effects of drugs, which has great potential for the treatment of glioma and has become the focus of current research and future research trends in the treatment of glioma.

Knowledge base and emerging trends in YAP1 research

Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) is a transcriptional coactivator that mediates the Hippo signaling pathway, which participates in the development and growth of the body; it plays key roles in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and therapy resistance. However, the pathophysiological mechanism of YAP1 has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, we explored the status and evolutionary trend in YAP1 research via bibliometric analysis. A total of 2,928 publications were downloaded from Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC). The co-citation network map was drawn via CiteSpace and VOSviewer software. We analyzed the co-authorship networks among countries, journals, and authors, as well as co-occurrence of co-cited references, citation bursts, and keywords in YAP1 research, in order to predict its literature development. The present research evaluates the annual publication trends of YAP1 literature, and the following results were established: research on YAP1 are of steady increase; China present the highest co-citation; the Journal of Biological Chemistry (J Biol Chem) was the most productive journal, while Cell press received the most citations from co-cited references; Among the authors in the overall citations Bin Zhao is the most promising collaborator for emerging scholars in this field; and lastly, co-occurrence keyword analysis indicated that the emerging trends in YAP1 research were mainly focused on cancer therapy. We established that projects on YAP1 research is presently in its rapid developmental stage with active global collaboration. In addition, the mechanism and clinical significance of YAP1 in cancer was established as the potential trend of future studies.

Bibliometric and visual analysis of nephrotoxicity research worldwide

Background: Nephrotoxicity of drugs contributes to acute kidney injury with high mortality and morbidity, which crucially limits the application and development of drugs. Although many publications on nephrotoxicity have been conducted globally, there needs to be a scientometric study to systematically analyze the intellectual landscape and frontiers research trends in the future.

Methods: Publications on nephrotoxicity from 2011 to 2021 were collected to perform bibliometric visualization using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Scimago Graphica software based on the Web of Science Core Collection.

Results: A total of 9,342 documents were analyzed, which were primarily published in the United States (1,861), China (1,724), and Egypt (701). For institutions, King Saud University (166) had the most publications; Food and Chemical Toxicology, PLOS One, and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy were productive journals, primarily concentrating on the mechanisms of nephrotoxicity and renoprotective in cisplatin and antibiotics, especially in oxidative stress. Burst detection suggested that cisplatin, piperacillin-tazobactam, vancomycin-induced nephrotoxicity, antioxidants, and new biomaterials are frontiers of research.

Conclusion: This study first provides an updated perspective on nephrotoxicity and renoprotective strategies and mechanisms. This perspective may benefit researchers in choosing suitable journals and collaborators and assisting them in the deep understanding of the nephrotoxicity and renoprotective hotspots and frontiers.

Medicine-food herb: Angelica sinensis, a potential therapeutic hope for Alzheimer's disease and related complications

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, which has brought a huge burden to the world. The current therapeutic approach of one-molecule-one-target strategy fails to address the issues of AD because of multiple pathological features of AD. Traditionally, the herb of Angelica sinensis (AS) comes from the root of an umbrella plant Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels. As a typical medicine-food herb, studies have shown that AS can alleviate AD and AD-complications by multiple targets through the various foundations of pharmaceutical material and dietary supply basis. Therefore, this review summarizes the pharmacological effects of AS for the treatment of AD and AD-complications for the first time. AS contains many effective components, such as ligustilide, z-ligustilide, n-butylidenephthalide, α-pinene, p-cymene, myrcene, ferulic acid, vanillic acid and coniferyl ferulate. It is found that AS, AS-active compounds and AS-compound recipes mainly treat AD through neuroprotective, anti-inflammation, and anti-oxidant effects, improving mitochondrial dysfunction, anti-neuronal apoptosis, regulating autophagy, regulating intestinal flora and enhancing the central cholinergic system, which shows the multi-component and multi-target effect of AS. The role of dietary supplement components in AS for AD intervention is summarized, including vitamin B₁₂, folic acid, arginine, and oleic acid, which can improve the symptoms of AD. Besides, this review focuses on the safety and toxicity evaluation of AS, which provides a basis for its application. This review will provide further support for the research on AD and the application of medicine-food herb AS in a healthy lifestyle in the future.

The intellectual base and research fronts of IL-37: A bibliometric review of the literature from WoSCC

Background

IL-37 is a recently identified cytokine with potent immunosuppressive functions. The research fronts of IL-37 are worth investigating, and there is no bibliometric analysis in this field. The purpose of this study is to construct the intellectual base and predict research hotspots of IL-37 research both quantitatively and qualitatively according to bibliometric analysis.

Methods

The articles were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from the inception of the database to 1 April 2022. CiteSpace 5.8.R3 (64-bit, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA) and Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology (https://bibliometric.com/) were used to perform bibliometric and knowledge-map analyses.

Results

A total of 534 papers were included in 200 academic journals by 2,783 authors in 279 institutions from 50 countries/regions. The journal Cytokine published the most papers on IL-37, while Nature Immunology was the most co-cited journal. The publications belonged mainly to two categories of Immunology and Cell Biology. USA and China were the most productive countries. Meanwhile, the University of Colorado Denver in USA produced the highest number of publications followed by Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands and Monash University in Australia. Charles A. Dinarello published the most papers, while Marcel F. Nold had the most co-citations. Top 10 co-citations on reviews, mechanisms, and diseases were regarded as the knowledge base. The keyword co-occurrence and co-citations of references revealed that the mechanisms and immune-related disorders were the main aspects of IL-37 research. Notably, the involvement of IL-37 in various disorders and the additional immunomodulatory mechanisms were two emerging hotspots in IL-37 research.

Conclusions

The research on IL-37 was thoroughly reviewed using bibliometrics and knowledge-map analyses. The present study is a benefit for academics to master the dynamic evolution of IL-37 and point out the direction for future research.

Knowledge Mapping of Exosomes in Autoimmune Diseases: A Bibliometric Analysis (2002–2021)

Background

Autoimmune diseases (AIDs) are a class of chronic disabling diseases characterized by inflammation and damage to muscles, joints, bones, and internal organs. Recent studies have shown that much progress has been made in the research of exosomes in AIDs. However, there is no bibliometric analysis in this research field. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of exosomes in AIDs through bibliometrics.

Method

Publications related to exosomes in AIDs from 2002 to 2021 were searched on the web of science core collection (WoSCC) database. VOSviewers, CiteSpace and R package “bibliometrix” were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis.

Results

312 articles from 48 countries led by China and the United States were included. The number of publications related to exosomes in AIDs is increasing year by year. Central South University, Sun Yat Sen University, Tianjin Medical University and University of Pennsylvania are the main research institutions. Frontiers in immunology is the most popular journal in this field, and Journal of Immunology is the most co-cited journal. These publications come from 473 authors among which Ilias Alevizos, Qianjin Lu, Wei Wei, Jim Xiang and Ming Zhao had published the most papers and Clotilde Théry was co-cited most often. Studying the mechanism of endogenous exosomes in the occurrence and development of AIDs and the therapeutic strategy of exogenous exosomes in AIDs are the main topics in this research field. “Mesenchymal stem cells”, “microRNA”, “biomarkers”, “immunomodulation”, and “therapy” are the primary keywords of emerging research hotspots.

Conclusion

This is the first bibliometric study that comprehensively summarizes the research trends and developments of exosomes in AIDs. This information identifies recent research frontiers and hot directions, which will provide a reference for scholars studying exosomes.

Scientometric Study of Research in Information Retrieval in Medical Sciences

Background: Mapping scientific trends is one of the most important missions of scientometric research for effective research. The main goal of this paper was to visualize and draw the intellectual and cognitive structures of information retrieval (IR) in the medical sciences using science mapping.

Methods: In this cross-sectional scientometric study, we recruited all documents indexed in the Web of Science database with the topic of storing and retrieval of information in medical sciences. To analyze the results, 3 software, SciMAT-v1.1.04, VOSviewer-v1.6.14, CitNetExplorer_v1.0.0, were used.

Results: Our results showed that most scientific productions in this field fall into 2 categories: (1) effective methods of organizing information and (2) application and operation of the IR system in the process of intelligent questioning and answering, and analyzing information behaviors of physicians and health professionals. The results showed that the similarity index increased over time from 0.43 to 0.71. Analysis of the findings showed that similarity measures, expert systems, concepts, experience, answers, and multimodel IR clusters were considered as mature and completely centralized clusters in the first quarter of the strategic chart.

Conclusion: Because of the dramatic approximation of the vocabulary used by researchers and a relative slowdown in the growth rate of the subject's domain in the last decade, it seems necessary to pay attention to the expansion of the fields of IR and the application of its concepts in medical information sciences. Also, it can be recommended that designers of IR systems and techniques in medical information sciences pay more attention to human factors attentively to develop new technologies and tools.

Knowledge Mapping of Necroptosis From 2012 to 2021: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Necroptosis, a recently discovered programmed cell death, has been pathologically linked to various diseases and is thus a promising target for treating diseases. However, a comprehensive and objective report on the current status of entire necroptosis research is lacking. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis to quantify and identify the status quo and trending issues of necroptosis research in the last decade.

Methods

Articles were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. We used two bibliometric tools (CiteSpace and VOSviewer) to quantify and identify the individual impact and cooperation information by analyzing annual publications, journals, co-cited journals, countries/regions, institutions, authors, and co-cited authors. Afterwards, we identified the trending research areas of necroptosis by analyzing the co-occurrence and burst of keywords and co-cited references.

Results

From 2012 to 2021, a total of 3,111 research articles on necroptosis were published in 786 academic journals by 19,687 authors in 885 institutions from 82 countries/regions. The majority of publications were from China and the United States, of which the United States maintained the dominant position in necroptosis research; meanwhile, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ghent University were the most active institutions. Peter Vandenabeele published the most papers, while Alexei Degterev had the most co-citations. Cell Death & Disease published the most papers on necroptosis, while Cell was the top 1 co-cited journal, and the major area of these publications was molecular, biology, and immunology. High-frequency keywords mainly included those that are molecularly related (MLKL, TNF-alpha, NF-κB, RIPK3, RIPK1), pathological process related (cell-death, apoptosis, necroptosis, necrosis, inflammation), and disease related (cancer, ischemia/reperfusion injury, infection, carcinoma, Alzheimer’s disease).

Conclusion

Necroptosis research had a stable stepwise growth in the past decade. Current necroptosis studies focused on its cross-talk with other types of cell death, potential applications in disease treatment, and further mechanisms. Among them, the synergy with ferroptosis, further RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL studies, its association with inflammation and oxidative stress and translational applications, and the therapeutic potential to treat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases are the trending research area. These might provide ideas for further research in the necroptosis field.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of electroacupuncture in the past 10 years

BACKGROUND

There are many studies that have interrogated the evolution and use of electroacupuncture (EA). We aimed to evaluate the research status, cooperation and development of EA in the past 10 years.

METHODS

We obtained data on the EA from the Web of Science core collection database. CiteSpace 5.7. R1 software was used to assess research cooperation through analysis of authors, institutions and countries. In addition, keyword cluster analysis, references and burst detection were analyzed to explore research hotspots and trends in the field of EA.

RESULTS

We included a total of 3019 citing literature and 78,235 cited literature for analysis. The data showed that there has been a rise in the global number of EA studies in the past decade. Besides, the data demonstrated that China has made outstanding contribution in the development of EA. Whereas there is inter-agency cooperation in China, there is less cooperation with other countries. In addition, we showed frequent use of keywords such as "expression", "stimulation", or "pain". Besides, neuroscience was the main research area, followed by general medicine and oncology. Furthermore, with the improved research methods and technologies, there is enhanced overall quality of the studies.

CONCLUSION

Taken together, our findings demonstrate a steady increase in the studies involving EA. However, the studies are unevenly distributed among countries and thus there is need for closer international cooperation.

Current update on herbal sources of antithrombotic activity—a comprehensive review

Background

Herbs are commonly used to treat cardiovascular diseases in various traditional medicine. On the other hand, herb-drug interactions are most commonly encountered with conventional antiplatelet and anticoagulant drug prescriptions. This review presents a compilation of plants investigated for antiplatelet and anticoagulation recently and enumerates their possible lead compounds responsible for its action for paving further drug discovery and knowledge update.

Main body of the abstract

Information about the herbs was withdrawn from the PubMed database of the previous 5 years. We also hand-searched the bibliography of relevant articles for the acquisition of additional information. About 72 herbal sources were identified with the effect of antiplatelet activity, antithrombotic activity, and anticoagulant activity. Bioactive compounds and various secondary metabolites responsible for it, such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, coumarins, polyphenols, furan derivatives, iridoid glycosides, sesquiterpenes, aporphine compounds, were reported.

Conclusion

Newer pharmacological moieties are needed to prevent or reduce the adverse effects of current anti-thrombotic agents and to improve the safety of patients and cost-effectiveness.

Mapping Knowledge Structure and Themes Trends of Osteoporosis in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disabling disease characterized by chronic inflammation, articular cartilage destruction, and reduced bone mass. Multiple studies have revealed that the development of osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA; ORA) patients could be led to a reduced quality of life and increased healthcare costs. Nevertheless, no attempt has been made to analyze the field of ORA research with the bibliometric method. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and theme trends in the field of ORA research from a bibliometric perspective.

Methods: Articles and reviews regarding ORA from 1998 to 2021 were identified from the Web of Science database. An online bibliometric platform, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software were used to generate visualization knowledge maps including co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis. SPSS, R, and Microsoft Excel software were used to conduct curve fitting and correlation analysis, and to analyze quantitative indicators, such as publication and citation counts, h-index, and journal citation reports.

Results: A total of 1,081 papers with 28,473 citations were identified. Publications were mainly concentrated in North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Asia. Economic strength is an important factor affecting scientific output. The United States contributed the most publications (213) with the highest h-index value (46) as of September 14, 2021. Diakonhjemmet Hospital and professor Haugeberg G were the most prolific institution and influential authors, respectively. Journal of Rheumatology was the most productive journal concerning ORA research. According to the burst references, “anti-citrullinated protein antibodies” and “preventing joint destruction” have been recognized as the hot research issues in the domain. The keywords co-occurrence analysis identified “teriparatide,” “interleukin-6,” “Wnt,” and “vertebral fractures” as the important future research directions.

Conclusion: This was the first bibliometric study comprehensively summarizing the trends and development of ORA research. Our findings could offer practical sources for scholars to understand the key information in this field, and identify the potential research frontiers and hot directions in the near future.

Scientometric Analysis of Medicinal and Edible Plant Coptis

Objective: A scientometric analysis to obtain knowledge mapping of Coptis revealed the current research situation, knowledge base and research hotspots in Coptis research.

Methods:Coptis-related documents published from 1987 to 2020 were selected through the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewer and Microsoft Excel were used to construct knowledge maps of the Coptis research field.

Results: A total of 367 documents and their references were analyzed. These papers were primarily published in mainland China (214), followed by Japan (57) and South Korea (52), and they each formed respective cooperation networks. The document co-citation analysis suggested that the identification of Coptis Salisb. species, the production of alkaloids, and the mechanisms of action of these alkaloids formed the knowledge bases in this field. A keyword analysis further revealed that the research hotspots were primarily concentrated in three fields of research involving berberine, Coptis chinensis Franch, and Coptis japonica (Thunb) Makino. Oxidative stress, rat plasma (for the determination of plasma alkaloid contents), and Alzheimer’s disease are recent research hotspots associated with Coptis.

Conclusion:Coptis research was mainly distributed in three countries: China, Japan, and South Korea. Researchers were concerned with the identification of Coptis species, the production of Coptis alkaloids, and the efficacy and pharmacological mechanism of the constituent alkaloids. In addition, the anti-oxidative stress, pharmacokinetics, and Alzheimer’s disease treatment of Coptis are new hotspots in this field. This study provides a reference for Coptis researchers.

Validation and analysis of the geographical origin of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels using multi-element and stable isotopes

Background

Place of origin is an important factor when determining the quality and authenticity of Angelica sinensis for medicinal use. It is important to trace the origin and confirm the regional characteristics of medicinal products for sustainable industrial development. Effectively tracing and confirming the material’s origin may be accomplished by detecting stable isotopes and mineral elements.

Methods

We studied 25 A. sinensis samples collected from three main producing areas (Linxia, Gannan, and Dingxi) in southeastern Gansu Province, China, to better identify its origin. We used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to determine eight mineral elements (K, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, Al) and three stable isotopes (δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, δ¹⁸O). Principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to verify the validity of its geographical origin.

Results

K, Ca/Al, δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N and δ¹⁸O are important elements to distinguish A. sinensis sampled from Linxia, Gannan and Dingxi. We used an unsupervised PCA model to determine the dimensionality reduction of mineral elements and stable isotopes, which could distinguish the A. sinensis from Linxia. However, it could not easily distinguish A. sinensis sampled from Gannan and Dingxi. The supervised PLS-DA and LDA models could effectively distinguish samples taken from all three regions and perform cross-validation. The cross-validation accuracy of PLS-DA using mineral elements and stable isotopes was 84%, which was higher than LDA using mineral elements and stable isotopes.

Conclusions

The PLS-DA and LDA models provide a theoretical basis for tracing the origin of A. sinensis in three regions (Linxia, Gannan and Dingxi). This is significant for protecting consumers’ health, rights and interests.

Knowledge Domain and Emerging Trends in Ferroptosis Research: A Bibliometric and Knowledge-Map Analysis

Objectives

To identify the cooperation and impact of authors, countries, institutions, and journals, evaluate the knowledge base, find the hotspot trends, and detect the emerging topics regarding ferroptosis research.

Methods

The articles and reviews related to ferroptosis were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection on November 1, 2020. Two scientometric software (CiteSpace 5.7 and VOSviewer 1.6.15) were used to perform bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis.

Results

A total of 1,267 papers were included, in 466 academic journals by 6,867 authors in 438 institutions from 61 countries/regions. The ferroptosis-related publications were increasing rapidly. Cell Death & Disease published the most papers on ferroptosis, while Cell was the top co-cited journal, publication journals and co-cited journals were major in the molecular and biology fields. The United States and China were the most productive countries; meanwhile, the University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University and Guangzhou Medical University were the most active institutions. Brent R Stockwell published the most papers, while Scott J Dixon had the most co-citations; simultaneously, active cooperation existed in ferroptosis researchers. Ten references on reviews, mechanisms, and diseases were regarded as the knowledge base. Five main aspects of ferroptosis research included regulation mechanisms, nervous system injury, cancer, relationships with other types of cell death, and lipid peroxidation. The latest hotspots were nanoparticle, cancer therapy, iron metabolism, and in-depth mechanism. Notably Nrf2 might have turning significance. The emerging topics on ferroptosis research were the further molecular mechanism of ferroptosis and the wider application of ferroptosis-related disease with advanced technology.

Conclusion

This study performed a full overview of the ferroptosis research using bibliometric and visual methods. The information would provide helpful references for scholars focusing on ferroptosis.

Top 100 most-cited original articles, systematic reviews/meta-analyses in robotic surgery: A scientometric study

The aim of this study was to explore and analyze the main features of the top 100 most-cited original articles, systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) in the field of robotic surgery, through scientometric analysis. VOSviewer and Excel 2019 were employed to conduct this scientometric study. We found that the majority of original articles (72/100) were published during the 2000s, while the majority of the top 100 most-cited SRs/MAs (91/100) during the 2010s. The USA was the most dominant country (n = 78), Henry Ford Health System was the most productive institution (n = 10), and Menon M was the largest contributing first author (n = 5) of the top 100 most-cited original articles. The USA was the most dominant country (n = 33), University of Padua was the most productive institution (n = 9), and Ficarra V was the largest contributing first author (n = 4) of the top 100 most-cited SRs/MAs. The top 100 most-cited original articles in robotic surgery have focused on the feasibility, outcomes and learning curve of robotic surgery for various neoplasms and cancers. The top 100 most-cited SRs/MAs have focused on the differences between robotic surgery and other types of surgery, with respect to the learning curve, costs, outcomes and experience in treating neoplasms, cancer and other diseases. In the future, the formation of cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary cooperation teams should be promoted and corresponding regulations and standards for specific diseases should be developed to regulate and promote the development of robotic surgery.

Ten Years of the Cohort Biobank: Bibliometric Outcomes

Background: Cohort studies with biobanks that use strict quality standards are essential requirements, not only for the development of new diagnostic and prognostic markers, but also for improving the understanding of pathophysiology of disease development, which have drawn an increasing amount of attention over the past decades. However, a bibliometric analysis of the global research on cohort biobanks is rare. The objective of this study was to evaluate the origin, current trend, and research hotspots of cohort biobanks. Materials and Methods: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) with "biobank" and "cohort" as the topic words to retrieve English language articles published from 2009 to 2018. The CiteSpace 5.5.R2 was used to perform the cooperation network analysis, key words co-occurrence and burst detection analysis, and reference co-citation analysis. Results: The number of publications on cohort biobanks has increased over the past decade. Tai Hing Lam from the Department of Community Medicine, University of Hong Kong, was found to be the most productive researcher in this field. The percentage of publications in England (38.30%) was the highest all over the world. Risk, biobank, meta-analysis, cohort, disease, and so on were the most frequent keywords. Metabolic syndrome was the strongest burst keyword in this field, followed by Hong Kong, Guangzhou biobank cohort and personalized medicine. Moreover, of all the references for 932 articles included in the study, the article titled "UK biobank: an open access resource for identifying the causes of a wide range of complex diseases of middle and old age" published in PLoS Med by Sudlow et al., was the most frequently co-cited reference in this field. The largest cluster was labeled as Guangzhou biobank cohort study. Conclusions: This study provides an insight into cohort biobanks and the valuable information for biobankers to identify new perspectives on potential collaborators and cooperative countries/territories.

Knowledge Mapping of Drug-Induced Liver Injury: A Scientometric Investigation (2010-2019)

Background

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a common adverse event, which compromises the safety of numerous drugs, poses a significant risk to patient health, and enhances healthcare expenditures. Many articles have been recently published on DILI related research, though no relevant scientometric study has been published yet. This scientometric study was aimed at comprehensively analyzing the knowledge base and emerging topics on DILI.

Methods

The articles and reviews related to DILI, published from 2010 to 2019 in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), were retrieved on March 15, 2020, using relevant keywords. Four different scientometric software (HistCite, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-bibliometrix) was used to conduct this scientometric study.

Results

A total of 1,995 publications were retrieved (including 1,550 articles and 445 reviews) from 592 academic journals with 56,273 co-cited references in 10 languages by 2,331 institutions from 79 countries/regions. The majority of publications (n = 727, 36.44%) were published in the United States, and the University of North Carolina contributed the most publications (n = 89, 4.46%). The most productive academic journal on DILI was the Toxicological Sciences [n = 79, 3.96%; impact factor (IF) 2018 = 3.564], and Hepatology was the first co-cited journal (n = 7,383, IF 2018 = 14.971). Fontana RJ and Teschke R may have significant influence on DILI research, with more publications (n = 46; n = 39) and co-citations (n = 382; n = 945). Definition, incidence rate or clinical characteristics, etiology or pathogenesis (such as the character of the innate immune system, the regulation of cell-death pathways, and susceptible HLA-B*5701 genotype), identification of main drugs and causality assessment (criteria and methods) were the knowledge base for DILI research. Exploring the microscopic mechanism (such as the organelle dysfunction and cytotoxicity induced by drugs, and exploration of role of neutrophils in DILI using mouse models) and developed newer approaches to prevent DILI (such as the prospective HLA-B*5701 screening and in vitro approaches for assessing the potential risk of candidate drugs for DILI) were the recent major topics for DILI research.

Conclusion

This scientometric study comprehensively reviewed the publications related to DILI during the past decade using quantitative and qualitative methods. This information would provide references for scholars, researching on DILI.
