Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to validate the Japanese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4-J). People in Japan, especially healthcare workers (HCWs) suffer from high rates of mental health symptoms. The PHQ-4 is an established ultra-brief mental health measure used in various settings, populations and languages. The Japanese version of the PHQ-4 has not been validated. METHODS Two hundred eighty people in Japan (142 HCWs and 138 from the general public) responded to the PHQ-4-J. Internal consistency, and factorial validity were assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) models. RESULTS Internal consistency was high (α = 0.70-0.86). CFA yielded very good fit indices for a two-factor solution (RMSEA = 0.04, 95% CI 0.00-0.17) and MIMIC models indicated the performance differed between HCWs and the general population. CONCLUSIONS The PHQ-4-J is a reliable ultra-brief scale for depression and anxiety in Japanese, which can be used to meet current needs in mental health research and practice in Japan. Disaster research and gerontology research can benefit from this scale, enabling mental health assessment with little participant burden. In practice, early detection and personalised care can be facilitated by using the scale. Future research should target specific populations in Japan during a non-emergency time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Catalpol, an important compound found in Rehmannia glutinosa (a plant with high nutritional and antidepressant medicinal value), exhibits various biological activities and has the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Our recent studies revealed a gender difference in the antidepressant activity of Rehmannia glutinosa with females showing better responses than males. Catalpol is likely the key compound responsible for this gender-specific difference, which caters to current clinical observations that the severity and impact of depression are approximately two to three times higher in females than in males. However, the sex-specific mechanism of catalpol's antidepressant effects remains unclear. PURPOSE AND METHODS Our recent molecular network predictions suggest that the gender-specific antidepressant properties of catalpol primarily involve the regulation of SIRT1-mediated synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. Building on this, the present study used a well-established chronic unpredictable mild stress model of depression in mice to confirm the sex-specific antidepressant characteristics of catalpol over time and intensity. Furthermore, using SIRT1 inhibitors and activators, behavioral tests, hematoxylin & eosin, Nissl, and Golgi staining, western blotting, immunofluorescence, and real-time PCR, we evaluated the key indicators of depressive behavior, synaptic plasticity, and neurogenesis before and after SIRT1 intervention to comprehensively assess whether the sex-specific antidepressant mechanism of catalpol indeed involves SIRT1-mediated synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. RESULTS The gender-dependent antidepressant effects of catalpol are characterized by a faster onset and stronger effects in females compared to males, with females showing stronger regulation of SIRT1-mediated synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. Activation of SIRT1 preserved the gender differences in catalpol's effects on depressive behavior, hippocampal synaptic plasticity (including neuronal consolidation, neuronal density, dendritic spines, and PSD95 and SYP gene and protein expression), and neurogenesis (including enhancement of GAP43 and MAP2 expression, activation of c-myc, cyclinD1, Ngn2, and NeuroD1 mRNA levels, and upregulation of the Wnt3a/β-catenin/GSK-3β pathway), while inhibition of SIRT1 abolished these gender differences in the effects of catalpol. CONCLUSIONS Catalpol exhibits higher antidepressant activity in female mice compared to male mice, and the mechanism underlying this gender difference in antidepressant effects may depend on catalpol's higher sensitivity in improving hippocampal SIRT1-mediated synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis in females. The novelty of this study lies in its first-time revelation of the gender-specific phenotypes, targets, and molecular mechanisms of the antidepressant effects of catalpol.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The development of individual subtypes based on biomarkers offers a cost-effective and timely avenue to comprehending individual differences pertaining to mental health, independent from individuals' subjective insights. Incorporating 2-channel electroencephalography (EEG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG), we sought to establish a subtype classification system with clinical relevance. METHODS One hundred healthy participants and 99 patients with psychiatric disorders were recruited. Classification thresholds were determined using the EEG and PPG data from 2,278 individuals without mental disorders, serving to classify subtypes in our sample of 199 participants. Multivariate analysis of variance was applied to examine psychological distinctions among these subtypes. K-means clustering was employed to verify the classification system. RESULTS The distribution of subtypes differed between healthy participants and those with psychiatric disorders. Cognitive abilities were contingent upon brain subtypes, while mind subtypes exhibited significant differences in symptom severity, overall health, and cognitive stress. K-means clustering revealed that the results of our theory-based classification and data-driven classification are comparable. The synergistic assessment of both brain and mind subtypes was also explored. CONCLUSION Our subtype classification system offers a concise means to access individuals' mental health. The utilization of EEG and PPG signals for subtype classification offers potential for the future of digital mental healthcare.

Abstract
Life activities profoundly influence well-being, mental health, and quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the importance of monitoring these activities for psychological and emotional health. However, existing measurement tools are limited, particularly for assessing psychological health. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Core Life Activities (CORE) scale, comprising five key factors (sleep, exercise, learning, diet, and social relationships) identified in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and gerontology. In Study 1 (n = 1,137), exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a single-factor structure with good model fit (χ2 = 6.377, df = 3, TLI = 0.992, CFI = 0.998, RMSEA = 0.031), demonstrating robust internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.776) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.522, p < 0.001). The CORE exhibited significant convergent validity with mental health screening tools for depressive and anxiety disorders and suicidality. Study 2 (n = 684) confirmed a significant correlation between CORE and the World Health Organisation Quality of Life Brief Version, complementing the convergent validity found in Study 1. In addition, discriminant validity was confirmed by a non-significant correlation with the COVID-19 Preventive Behavior Scale. The findings establish the CORE as a reliable and valid tool, offering a simple yet comprehensive measure for assessing core life activities with potential applications in diverse environments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to assess the relationship of tinnitus with hyperacusis with cognitive impairment as indicated by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) tool. METHODS This multicenter cross-sectional study included individuals with chronic tinnitus from the "Unification of Treatments and Interventions for Tinnitus Patients" (UNITI) database. Participants were recruited from four different tertiary clinical centers located in Athens and Granada (Mediterranean group), as well as Berlin and Regensburg (German group). In total, 380 individuals with a diagnosis of non-pulsatile chronic tinnitus (permanent and constant tinnitus lasting more than 6 months) and no evidence of severe cognitive impairment (MoCA score >22) were enrolled. The evaluation utilized the following tools: MoCA, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Hyperacusis Questionnaire (GÜF), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the European School for Interdisciplinary Tinnitus Research Screening Questionnaire. RESULTS MoCA scores differed between German and Mediterranean individuals (P<0.01), necessitating separate analyses for each group. In both cohorts, MoCA scores were significantly associated with education level, age, hearing threshold at 8 kHz, and THI. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between PHQ-9 scores and both THI and GÜF (P<0.01 for both Germans and those from the Mediterranean). CONCLUSION Our data suggest an association between tinnitus handicap, high-frequency hearing loss, and mild cognitive impairment. Additionally, PHQ-9 scores were associated with tinnitus and hyperacusis scores, independent of hearing loss thresholds.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world population faced various mental health challenges, highlighting a need for new community-based psychosocial interventions. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and feasibility of Nature-Based Therapy (NBT) for the community experiencing psychological distress during the pandemic. A multi-site trial comparing NBT and control groups was conducted in Korea with 291 participants exhibiting mild to severe depression or anxiety. A total of 192 participated in 30 sessions of therapeutic gardening, while 99 remained in the control group. Psychological distress and well-being were assessed using seven measures of depression, anxiety, daily activity, life satisfaction, mindfulness, stress, and loneliness. The effect sizes (Cohen's d) of NBT compared to the control group were medium to large: depression (0.583), anxiety (0.728), daily activity (1.002), life satisfaction (0.786), mindfulness (0.645), stress (0.903), and loneliness (0.695). Multilevel analysis revealed significant Time × Group interaction effects for all measures. Pearson correlation (r = - 0.28 to 0.71) showed that changes in all variables correlated significantly with each other, with small to large effect sizes. Therapeutic alliance at post-test positively moderated the intervention effects on the outcomes. We concluded that NBT is a promising psychosocial intervention for treating psychological distress for community dwellers.

Abstract
Background Despite the effectiveness of social distancing policies in preventing the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), their impact on mental health remains a concern. Longitudinal studies investigating the psychological effects of social distancing are limited. Methods Longitudinal data on psychological variables were collected eight times between May 2020 and November 2021 through online surveys in South Korea. Results The participants in the study reported a worsening of depressive and anxiety symptoms, suicide risk, and psychological distress with increasing levels of social distancing. Specifically, during the third wave, when social distancing levels peaked, the highest levels of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress were observed, and the second-lowest levels of vitality were reported. Furthermore, psychological risk factors, such as depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and suicidal risk, were closely associated with vitality levels in daily life. Discussions During the pandemic, although social distancing helped prevent the spread of COVID-19, it also led to increased depression, anxiety, suicide risk, psychological distress, and decreased vitality. Engagement at a personal level in fundamental daily activities is important to cope with psychological distress. Our results indicate that commitment to fundamental daily activities and following routines is an important protective factor against psychological distress, notwithstanding COVID-19.

Abstract
Objective Maumgyeol Basic service is a mental health evaluation and grade scoring software using the 2 channels EEG and photoplethysmogram (PPG). This service is supposed to assess potential at-risk groups with mental illness more easily, rapidly, and reliably. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical implication of the Maumgyeol Basic service. Methods One hundred one healthy controls and 103 patients with a psychiatric disorder were recruited. Psychological evaluation (Mental Health Screening for Depressive Disorders [MHS-D], Mental Health Screening for Anxiety Disorders [MHS-A], cognitive stress response scale [CSRS], 12-item General Health Questionnaire [GHQ-12], Clinical Global Impression [CGI]) and digit symbol substitution test (DSST) were applied to all participants. Maumgyeol brain health score and Maumgyeol mind health score were calculated from 2 channel frontal EEG and PPG, respectively. Results Participants were divided into three groups: Maumgyeol Risky, Maumgyeol Good, and Maumgyeol Usual. The Maumgyeol mind health scores, but not brain health scores, were significantly lower in the patients group compared to healthy controls. Maumgyeol Risky group showed significantly lower psychological and cognitive ability evaluation scores than Maumgyeol Usual and Good groups. Maumgyel brain health score showed significant correlations with CSRS and DSST. Maumgyeol mind health score showed significant correlations with CGI and DSST. About 20.6% of individuals were classified as the No Insight group, who had mental health problems but were unaware of their illnesses. Conclusion This study suggests that the Maumgyeol Basic service can provide important clinical information about mental health and be used as a meaningful digital mental healthcare monitoring solution to prevent symptom aggravation.

Abstract
Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is the most widely used tool for screening for major depressive disorder (MDD). Although its reliability and validity have been proven, missed or misjudged cases during MDD screening are often encountered. A nomogram that considers the weights of depressive symptoms was developed using data from premature ejaculation patients to improve screening accuracy. During a 33-month prospective study, a training cohort comprising 605 participants from Xijing Hospital was used to develop and internally validate the nomogram. A validation cohort comprising 461 patients from Xi'an Daxing Hospital was also used to externally test the nomogram. The nomogram was established by integrating the LASSO regression-based optimal predictors of MDD according to their coefficients in a multivariate logistic regression model. The nomogram was well-calibrated during internal and external validations. Moreover, it showed a better discriminatory capacity and yielded more net benefits in both validations than PHQ-9. With better performance, the nomogram may help reduce the number of missed or misjudged cases during MDD screening. This study is the first to weigh the direct indicators of MDD under the DSM-5 criteria, presenting a fresh concept that can be applied to other populations to enhance screening accuracy.
