A bibliometric analysis of the 100 top-cited systematic review and meta-analysis in Orthodontics

OBJECTIVE

This bibliometric study aimed to analyze the citation metrics, journal and author characteristics, and subject domains of the 100 top-cited Systematic Reviews (SR) and Meta-Analysis (MA) in orthodontics.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An electronic database search was conducted for SR and MA in the Web of Science on 16th July 2023, without language and time restrictions. Of the 802 hits returned, the 100 top-cited orthodontic articles were shortlisted. They were analyzed for citation metrics, journal characteristics (journal, year of publication, impact factor-IF), author and affiliation characteristics (number, primary and corresponding author's affiliation, and country), study domain, and keywords.

RESULTS

These articles were published from 1996 to 2021 in 20 journals, with an impact factor of 1.9 to 10.5, by 351 researchers affiliated with 104 universities. Their citations ranged from 45 to 344, and 34 poised to be classified as classic (≥ 100 citations). The maximum number of articles was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (n=38), the European Journal of Orthodontics (n=18), and the Angle Orthodontist (n=8). The authors for individual papers ranged from 1 to 10, with 5 being the most common (n=58). Europe had the highest contribution regarding the number of corresponding authors, institutions, and citations. Bone anchorage and orthodontic tooth movement/Biomechanics were the most frequently researched domains (n=11 each). The most common keyword used was Orthodontics (n=19), followed by Systematic Review (n=16) and Meta-analysis (n=9).

CONCLUSION

In general, the top cited SR and MA were published in high-impact orthodontic journals, were multi-authored, and reflected the collaborative work from different universities.

Fostering the discussion of planetary health in occupational therapy and physiotherapy

INTRODUCTION

Occupational therapists and physiotherapists aim to promote health, prevent various diseases and help people in their rehabilitation processes. So far, there is a paucity of understanding of the big picture of how the new paradigm of planetary health (PH) is connected to the education and practice of these professionals.

METHODS

This research aimed to address this gap by investigating and deploying a bibliometric analysis to elucidate the pivotal role of occupational therapists and physiotherapists in addressing PH challenges. The ultimate goal is to construct a comprehensive framework crosschecking the bibliometric analysis and the collection of 10 case studies selected by experts to outline how best practices in occupational therapy and physiotherapy, related to the three pillars of sustainability and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), can contribute to increasing PH.

RESULTS

The bibliometric analysis revealed four major research strands: 1) enhancing patient care and quality of life; 2) integrating sustainability in health care and rehabilitation; 3) professional development and clinical competence; and 4) evidence-based practice and quality improvement. Moreover, further temporal analysis revealed how the topic evolved, from advancing evidence-based practice and clinical effectiveness, exploring the strengthening of health care and person-centred practices, to connecting the topic to aspects also predicted by the SDGs, such as integrating environmental and climate concerns in therapy and addressing psychological and self-care impacts on health. The case studies confirmed this trend, and a framework of PH in occupational therapy and physiotherapy through the lens of the SDGs was developed to support future research and practitioners in advancing this research field.

CONCLUSIONS

Occupational therapists and physiotherapists are essential players in public health and can integrate sustainability at every level of practice, from using resources during therapy sessions to advocating for more sustainable lifestyles.

Visualization of scientific production in Caenorhabditis elegans: a bibliometric analysis (1980-2023)

Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a nematode and model organism whose entire genome has been mapped, which allows for easy observation of the organism's development due to its transparent structure, and which is appealing due to its ease of crossover, ease of culture, and low cost. Despite being separated by nearly a billion years of evolution, C. elegans homologs have been identified for the vast majority of human genes and are associated with C. elegans for many biological processes such as apoptosis, cell signaling, cell cycle, cell polarity, metabolism, and aging. A detailed bibliometric study is performed here to examine publication trends in this field. Data were taken from the Web of Science database and analyzed using the bibliometric application Biblioshiny (RStudio). In terms of publication, the results indicated a gradual increase each year between 1980 and 2023. A total of 20,322 records were issued in 96 countries, the majority of which were in the USA, China, and Japan. The most prolific writers, the journals most engaged in the area, the nations, institutions, and keywords used by authors were all determined using the Web of Science database and bibliometric rules. The number of papers in the C. elegans research field is increasing exponentially, and Genetics is the journal with the highest number of articles. This study presents how research patterns have evolved throughout time. As a result, worldwide cooperation and a potential field can be developed.

Deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease: A scientometric and bibliometric analysis, trends, and research hotspots

Parkinson disease (PD), a prevalent neurodegenerative ailment in the elderly, relies mainly on pharmacotherapy, yet deep brain stimulation (DBS) emerges as a vital remedy for refractory cases. This study performs a bibliometric analysis on DBS in PD, delving into research trends and study impact to offer comprehensive insights for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, illuminating the current state and evolutionary trajectory of research in this domain. A systematic search on March 13, 2023, in the Scopus database utilized keywords like "Parkinson disease," "PD," "Parkinsonism," "Deep brain stimulation," and "DBS." The top 1000 highly cited publications on DBS in PD underwent scientometric analysis via VOS Viewer and R Studio's Bibliometrix package, covering publication characteristics, co-authorship, keyword co-occurrence, thematic clustering, and trend topics. The bibliometric analysis spanned 1984 to 2021, involving 1000 cited articles from 202 sources. The average number of citations per document were 140.9, with 31,854 references. "Movement Disorders" led in publications (n = 98), followed by "Brain" (n = 78) and "Neurology" (n = 65). The University of Oxford featured prominently. Thematic keyword clustering identified 9 core research areas, such as neuropsychological function and motor circuit electrophysiology. The shift from historical neurosurgical procedures to contemporary focuses like "beta oscillations" and "neuroethics" was evident. The bibliometric analysis emphasizes UK and US dominance, outlining 9 key research areas pivotal for reshaping Parkinson treatment. A discernible shift from invasive neurosurgery to DBS is observed. The call for personalized DBS, integration with NIBS, and exploration of innovative avenues marks the trajectory for future research.

Removal of contaminants present in water and wastewater by cyclodextrin-based adsorbents: A bibliometric review from 1993 to 2022

Cyclodextrin (CD), a cyclic oligosaccharide from enzymatic starch breakdown, plays a crucial role in pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, textiles, biotechnology, chemicals, and environmental applications, including water and wastewater treatment. In this study, a statistical analysis was performed using VOSviewer and Citespace to scrutinize 2038 articles published from 1993 to 2022. The investigation unveiled a notable upsurge in pertinent articles and citation counts, with China and USA contributing the highest publication volumes. The prevailing research focus predominantly revolves around the application of CD-based materials used as adsorbents to remove conventional contaminants such as dyes and metals. The CD chemistry allows the construction of materials with various architectures, including cross-linked, grafted, hybrid or supported systems. The main adsorbents are cross-linked CD polymers, including nanosponges, fibres and hybrid composites. Additionally, research efforts are actually concentrated on the synthesis of CD-based membranes, CD@graphene oxide, and CD@TiO2. These materials are proposed as adsorbents to remove emerging pollutants. By employing bibliometric analysis, this study delivers a comprehensive retrospective review and synthesis of research concerning CD-based adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from wastewater, thereby offering valuable insights for future large-scale application of CD-based adsorption materials.

Development and trends in metabolomics studies in psoriasis: A bibliometric analysis of related research from 2011 to 2024

Background

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with autoimmune characteristics. Recent research has made significant progress in the field of psoriasis metabolomics. However, there is a lack of bibliometric analysis on metabolomics of psoriasis. The objective of this study is to utilize bibliometrics to present a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge structure and research hotspots in psoriasis within the field of metabolomics.

Methods

We conducted a bibliometric analysis by searching the Web of Science Core Collection database for publications on metabolomics in psoriasis from 2011 to 2024. To perform this analysis, we utilized tools such as VOSviewers, CiteSpace, and the R package "bibliometrix".

Results

A total of 307 articles from 47 countries, with the United States and China leading the way, were included in the analysis. The publications focusing on metabolomics in psoriasis have shown a steady year-on-year growth. The Medical University of Bialystok is the main research institution. The International Journal of Molecular Sciences emerges as the prominent journal in the field, while the Journal of Investigative Dermatology stands out as the highly co-cited publication. A total of 2029 authors contributed to these publications, with Skrzydlewska Elzbieta, Baran Anna, Flisiak Iwona, Murakami Makoto being the most prolific contributors. Notably, Armstrong April W. received the highest co-citation. Investigating the mechanisms of metabolomics in the onset and progression of psoriasis, as well as exploring therapeutic strategies, represents the primary focus of this research area. Emerging research hotspots encompass inflammation, lipid metabolism, biomarker, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and arthritis.

Conclusion

The results of this study indicate that metabolism-related research is thriving in psoriasis, with a focus on the investigation of metabolic targets and interventions within the metabolic processes. Metabolism is expected to be a hot topic in future psoriasis research.

It is time to move forward: a bibliometric analysis of top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy

OBJECTIVES

To analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy.

METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection was employed to systematically retrieve publications related to elbow arthroscopy. Subsequently, the top 50 cited articles meeting the predefined inclusion criteria were meticulously documented and subjected to comprehensive bibliometric analysis.

RESULTS

The top 50 cited articles spanned the years 1999-2017, with the 2010s emerging as the most prolific decade. Citations per article varied from 24 to 211, and citation density ranged from 1.61 to 9.17. The United States dominated in article production and citations. Predominantly, the articles took the form of case series and expert opinions, with a notable absence of level I or II evidence. The keywords with the highest frequencies were "arthrofibrosis," "complications," and "release." These keywords formed five main clusters: stiff elbow, osteoarthritis, osteochondritis dissecans, and lateral epicondylitis.

CONCLUSIONS

The majority of the top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy comprised case series exhibiting Level IV or V evidence. Despite a dynamic development post-2010, elbow arthroscopy articles showed lower mean citations and citation density compared to other joints, potentially influenced by concerns about complications. However, with the increasing prevalence of elbow arthroscopy procedures, it is anticipated that higher-level articles, particularly those focusing on complications and exploring additional indications, will supersede some of the articles included in this analysis.

Comparative assessment of scientific reach and utilization of the International Association of Dental Traumatology 2020 guidelines: An altmetric and citation analysis

BACKGROUND/AIM

The updated version of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines was published online in May 2020 in the form of four papers. They are extensively used in dental trauma education in textbooks, undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and clinical workshops. Hence, this study aimed to assess the impact, global scientific reach, and utilization of these guidelines through altmetric and citation analysis.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The protocol was prepared after an expert group discussion. Dimensions database was used to derive the altmetric and citation data on April 10th, 2023. The data was extracted by using a self-designed pre-piloted form by two authors independently. The citing articles were further categorized into the type of study and the domains and subdomains of dental traumatology. The VOSviewer program was utilized to explore the correlation between the subdomains and the overlap of citations was assessed by creating a citation matrix.

RESULTS

A total of 552 citations had been collectively received by the four papers. The highest was seen for the guidelines for fracture and luxation in permanent teeth (FL), avulsion in permanent teeth (AV), general introduction (GI), and primary teeth (PT). Dental Traumatology had the maximum number of citing papers for each guideline. They were from 52 countries with English being the commonest language. Overall, the maximum number of citations had been received in narrative reviews (n = 104) and the majority of cited papers were categorized in the therapeutic domains. The most common subdomain for the papers that cited GI, FL, and AV was "treatment protocols in permanent teeth", while it was "awareness of prevention and emergency management of traumatic dental injuries" for the papers that had cited PT.

CONCLUSIONS

This analysis highlighted that the IADT 2020 guidelines are globally popular resources, which are widely used by the researchers across specialities and are intended towards clinical application.

A scientometric analysis of bone cutting tools & methodologies: Mapping the research landscape

This study undertakes a Scientometric analysis of bone-cutting tools, investigating a corpus of 735 papers from the Scopus database between 1941 and 2023. It employs bibliometric methodologies such as keyword coupling, co-citation, and co-authorship analysis to map the intellectual landscape and collaborative networks within this research domain. The analysis highlights a growing interest and significant advancements in bone-cutting tools, focusing on their design, the materials used, and the cutting processes involved. It identifies key research fronts and trends, such as the emphasis on surgical precision, material innovation, and the optimization of tool performance. Further, the study reveals a broad collaboration among researchers from various disciplines, including engineering, materials science, and medical sciences, reflecting the field's interdisciplinary nature. Despite the progress, the analysis points out several gaps, notably in tool design optimization and the impact of materials on bone health. This comprehensive review not only charts the evolution of bone-cutting tool research but also calls attention to areas requiring further investigation, aiming to inspire future studies that address these identified gaps and enhance surgical outcomes.

Does diversity beget diversity? A scientometric analysis of over 150,000 studies and 49,000 authors published in high-impact medical journals between 2007 and 2022

Background

Health research that significantly impacts global clinical practice and policy is often published in high-impact factor (IF) medical journals. These outlets play a pivotal role in the worldwide dissemination of novel medical knowledge. However, researchers identifying as women and those affiliated with institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) have been largely underrepresented in high-IF journals across multiple fields of medicine. To evaluate disparities in gender and geographical representation among authors who have published in any of five top general medical journals, we conducted scientometric analyses using a large-scale dataset extracted from the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), The British Medical Journal (BMJ), The Lancet, and Nature Medicine.

Methods

Author metadata from all articles published in the selected journals between 2007 and 2022 were collected using the DimensionsAI platform. The Genderize.io API was then utilized to infer each author's likely gender based on their extracted first name. The World Bank country classification was used to map countries associated with researcher affiliations to the LMIC or the high-income country (HIC) category. We characterized the overall gender and country income category representation across the medical journals. In addition, we computed article-level diversity metrics and contrasted their distributions across the journals.

Findings

We studied 151,536 authors across 49,764 articles published in five top medical journals, over a long period spanning 15 years. On average, approximately one-third (33.1%) of the authors of a given paper were inferred to be women; this result was consistent across the journals we studied. Further, 86.6% of the teams were exclusively composed of HIC authors; in contrast, only 3.9% were exclusively composed of LMIC authors. The probability of serving as the first or last author was significantly higher if the author was inferred to be a man (18.1% vs 16.8%, P < .01) or was affiliated with an institution in a HIC (16.9% vs 15.5%, P < .01). Our primary finding reveals that having a diverse team promotes further diversity, within the same dimension (i.e., gender or geography) and across dimensions. Notably, papers with at least one woman among the authors were more likely to also involve at least two LMIC authors (11.7% versus 10.4% in baseline, P < .001; based on inferred gender); conversely, papers with at least one LMIC author were more likely to also involve at least two women (49.4% versus 37.6%, P < .001; based on inferred gender).

Conclusion

We provide a scientometric framework to assess authorship diversity. Our research suggests that the inclusiveness of high-impact medical journals is limited in terms of both gender and geography. We advocate for medical journals to adopt policies and practices that promote greater diversity and collaborative research. In addition, our findings offer a first step towards understanding the composition of teams conducting medical research globally and an opportunity for individual authors to reflect on their own collaborative research practices and possibilities to cultivate more diverse partnerships in their work.

Trends and Future Research in Skeletal Muscle Tissue Engineering in the Past Decade (2012-2022)

To learn about advances in skeletal muscle tissue engineering (SMTE) in recent years, we used VOSviewer and Citespace software to quantitatively analyze and visualize relevant literature in the Web of Science database during the period 2012-2022. By mapping high-frequency keyword relationship networks, keyword time zones, and journal article cocitations, we clarified the areas of great interest, evolutionary paths, and developmental trends in research on SMTE. We conducted an in-depth analysis of highly cited and representative articles at various stages to summarize the mainstream research areas of great interest in SMTE and discussed the future development and challenges in this field, intending to provide a reference for the clinical treatment of skeletal muscle injury repair. We found that a collaborative network of authors has formed in this field; the journals publishing SMTE articles belong to the fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering, and open-access journals have played a key role in the promotion of the development of SMTE; and in the past decade, there has been rapid progress in SMTE research in terms of both depth and breadth. Impact statement Compared with the literature review method, bibliometrics can provide a comprehensive knowledge of a knowledge area based on a huge amount of literature. In this article, based on the Web of Science database, CiteSpace, and Vosviewer visualization tools were used to measure and analyze the literature reports in the field of skeletal muscle tissue engineering (SMTE). The research hotspots and cutting-edge information on SMTE were mined in terms of the number of publications, the number of citations, the keywords, the authors, and the publishing institutions to understand the current status of the research on SMTE in the world, to provide a reference for related researchers, engineering research in the field of SMTE, to comprehensively understand the current status of global research in the field of SMTE, and to provide a reference for related researchers.

Utilization of biochar for remediation of heavy metals in aqueous environments: A review and bibliometric analysis

Biochar usage for removing heavy metals from aqueous environments has emerged as a promising research area with significant environmental and economic benefits. Using the PICO approach, the research question aimed to explore using biochar to remove heavy metals from aqueous media. We merged the data from Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection databases to acquire a comprehensive perspective of the subject. The PRISMA guidelines were applied to establish the search parameters, identify the appropriate articles, and collect the bibliographic information from the publications between 2010 and 2022. The bibliometric analysis showed that biochar-based heavy metal remediation is a research field with increasing scholarly attention. The removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) was the most studied among the heavy metals. We identified five main clusters centered on adsorption, water treatment, adsorption models, analytical techniques, and hydrothermal carbonization by performing keyword co-occurrence analysis. Trending topics include biochar reusability, modification, acid mine drainage (AMD), wastewater treatment, and hydrochar. The reutilization of heavy metal-loaded spent biochar includes transforming it into electrodes for supercapacitors or stable catalyst materials. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biochar-based heavy metal remediation in aquatic environments and highlights knowledge gaps and future research directions.

An Emerging Foodborne Pathogen Spotlight: A Bibliometric Analysis and Scholarly Review of Escherichia coli O157 Research

Foodborne infections pose a substantial global threat, causing an estimated 600 million illnesses and resulting in approximately 420,000 deaths annually. Among the diverse array of pathogens implicated in these infections, Escherichia coli (E. coli), specifically the O157 strain (E. coli O157), emerges as a prominent pathogen associated with severe outbreaks. This study employs a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and scholarly review focused on E. coli O157 research. The bibliometric analysis highlights the significant role played by the United States in the E. coli O157 research domain. Further exploration underscores the noteworthy contributions of the researcher Doyle MP, whose body of work, consisting of 84 documents and an impressive H-Index of 49, reflects their substantial impact in the field. Recent research trends indicate a discernible shift towards innovative detection methods, exemplified by the adoption of CRISPR-CAS and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification. Moreover, high-throughput whole-genome sequencing techniques are gaining prominence for the expeditious analysis of pathogenic E. coli strains. Scientists are increasingly exploring antimicrobial agents, including phage therapy, to address the challenges posed by antibiotic-resistant E. coli strains, thereby addressing critical concerns related to multi-drug resistance. This comprehensive analysis provides vital insights into the dynamic landscape of E. coli O157 research. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals dedicated to mitigating E. coli O157 outbreaks and advancing global public health strategies.

Visualizing breast cancer research trends in KSA: A bibliometric analysis

Objectives

Bibliometric analysis has emerged as a valuable method for identifying emerging areas in a given research field. Breast carcinoma has maintained a stable rank as the most common cancer affecting women worldwide. This study performed bibliometric profiling to shed light on breast cancer research conducted in KSA over the past two decades and to present the research output in the field of microRNAs (miRNA) in breast cancer in KSA.

Methods

The Web of Science (WoS) and PubMed databases were selected for data retrieval, because of their high coverage, inclusion of high impact journals and easy access to high quality publications. Data retrieval was performed on January 31, 2022. Data were analyzed with Incites from WoS, PubMed and VOSviewer software version 16.1.8.

Results

The most dynamic institutions, authors and active funding bodies were identified, and output on research in the field of miRNA was assessed. Bibliometric parameters including the number of publications and citation index were analyzed. A total of 3831 publications in the field were identified. A steep increase was observed in breast cancer research. The maximum number of publications was observed in 2021. King Saud University and King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre funded most of the projects and contributed the most publications. Visible progress was seen in research exploring the diagnostic and prognostic roles of mRNAs and their therapeutic potential in breast cancer.

Conclusion

Breast cancer research has attracted substantial attention, as reflected by a notable increase in scientific publications over the past two decades in KSA. The bibliometric parameters revealed crucial information regarding research contributions from various institutions and authors. In the field of miRNAs, notable research investment was observed, but a significant lacuna exists. This study provides a reference that may aid oncologists, researchers and policymakers in planning future research.

Characteristics of bibliometric analyses of the complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine literature: A scoping review protocol

Background: There is a growing body of literature on complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM), which offers a holistic approach to health and the maintenance of social and cultural values. Bibliometric analyses are an increasingly commonly used method employing quantitative statistical techniques to understand trends in a particular scientific field. The objective of this scoping review is to investigate the quantity and characteristics of evidence in relation to bibliometric analyses of CAIM literature. Methods: The following bibliographic databases will be searched: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, AMED, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science. Studies published in English, conducting any type of bibliometric analysis involving any CAIM therapies, as detailed by an operational definition of CAIM adopted by Cochrane Complementary Medicine, will be included. Conference abstracts and study protocols will be excluded. The following variables will be extracted from included studies: title, author, year, country, study objective, type of CAIM, health condition targeted, databases searched in the bibliometric analysis, the type of bibliometric variables assessed, how bibliometric information was reported, main findings, conclusions, and limitations. Findings will be summarized narratively, as well as in tabular and graphical format. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this scoping review will be the first to investigate the characteristics of evidence in relation to bibliometric analyses on CAIM literature. The findings of this review may be useful to identify variations in the objectives, methods, and results of bibliometric analyses of CAIM research literature.

COVID-19 knowledge deconstruction and retrieval: an intelligent bibliometric solution

COVID-19 has been an unprecedented challenge that disruptively reshaped societies and brought a massive amount of novel knowledge to the scientific community. However, as this knowledge flood continues surging, researchers have been disadvantaged by not having access to a platform that can quickly synthesize emerging information and link the new knowledge to the latent knowledge foundation. Aiming to fill this gap, we propose a research framework and develop a dashboard that can assist scientists in identifying, retrieving, and understanding COVID-19 knowledge from the ocean of scholarly articles. Incorporating principal component decomposition (PCD), a knowledge mode-based search approach, and hierarchical topic tree (HTT) analysis, the proposed framework profiles the COVID-19 research landscape, retrieves topic-specific latent knowledge foundation, and visualizes knowledge structures. The regularly updated dashboard presents our research results. Addressing 127,971 COVID-19 research papers from PubMed, the PCD topic analysis identifies 35 research hotspots, along with their inner correlations and fluctuating trends. The HTT result segments the global knowledge landscape of COVID-19 into clinical and public health branches and reveals the deeper exploration of those studies. To supplement this analysis, we additionally built a knowledge model from research papers on the topic of vaccination and fetched 92,286 pre-Covid publications as the latent knowledge foundation for reference. The HTT analysis results on the retrieved papers show multiple relevant biomedical disciplines and four future research topics: monoclonal antibody treatments, vaccinations in diabetic patients, vaccine immunity effectiveness and durability, and vaccination-related allergic sensitization.

Gut Microbiome in the Progression of NAFLD, NASH and Cirrhosis, and Its Connection with Biotics: A Bibliometric Study Using Dimensions Scientific Research Database

There is growing evidence that gut microbiota dysbiosis is linked to the etiopathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), from the initial stage of disease until the progressive stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and the final stage of cirrhosis. Conversely, probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics have shown promise in restoring dysbiosis and lowering clinical indicators of disease in a number of both preclinical and clinical studies. Additionally, postbiotics and parabiotics have recently garnered some attention. The purpose of this bibliometric analysis is to assess recent publishing trends concerning the role of the gut microbiome in the progression of NAFLD, NASH and cirrhosis and its connection with biotics. The free access version of the Dimensions scientific research database was used to find publications in this field from 2002 to 2022. VOSviewer and Dimensions' integrated tools were used to analyze current research trends. Research into the following topics is expected to emerge in this field: (1) evaluation of risk factors which are correlated with the progression of NAFLD, such as obesity and metabolic syndrome; (2) pathogenic mechanisms, such as liver inflammation through toll-like receptors activation, or alteration of short-chain fatty acids metabolisms, which contribute to NAFLD development and its progression in more severe forms, such as cirrhosis; (3) therapy for cirrhosis through dysbiosis reduction, and research on hepatic encephalopathy a common consequence of cirrhosis; (4) evaluation of diversity, and composition of gut microbiome under NAFLD, and as it varies under NASH and cirrhosis by rRNA gene sequencing, a tool which can also be used for the development of new probiotics and explore into the impact of biotics on the gut microbiome; (5) treatments to reduce dysbiosis with new probiotics, such as Akkermansia, or with fecal microbiome transplantation.

An appraisal of peer-reviewed published literature on Influenza, 2000-2021 from countries in South-East Asia Region

Background

Influenza poses a major public health challenge in South-East Asia Region (SEAR). To address the challenge, there is a need to generate contextual evidence that could inform policy makers and program managers for response preparedness and impact mitigation. The World Health Organization has identified priority areas across five streams for research evidence generation at a global level (WHO Public Health Research Agenda). Stream 1 focuses on research for reducing the risk of emergence, Stream 2 on limiting the spread, Stream 3 on minimizing the impact, Stream 4 on optimizing the treatment and Stream 5 on promoting public health tools and technologies for Influenza. However, evidence generation from SEAR has been arguably low and needs a relook for alignment with priorities. This study aimed to undertake a bibliometric analysis of medical literature on Influenza over the past 21 years to identify gaps in research evidence and for identifying major areas for focusing with a view to provide recommendations to member states and SEAR office for prioritizing avenues for future research.

Methods

We searched Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases in August 2021. We identified studies on influenza published from the 11 countries in WHO SEAR in the date range of 1 January 2000-31 December 2021. Data was retrieved, tagged and analyzed based on the WHO priority streams for Influenza, member states, study design and type of research. Bibliometric analysis was done on Vosviewer.

Findings

We included a total of 1,641 articles (Stream 1: n = 307; Stream 2: n = 516; Stream 3: n = 470; Stream 4: n = 309; Stream 5: n = 227). Maximum number of publications were seen in Stream 2, i.e., limiting the spread of pandemic, zoonotic, and seasonal epidemic influenza which majorly included transmission, spread of virus at global and local levels and public health measures to limit the transmission. The highest number of publications was from India (n = 524) followed by Thailand (n = 407), Indonesia (n = 214) and Bangladesh (n = 158). Bhutan (n = 10), Maldives (n = 1), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (n = 1), and Timor-Leste (n = 3) had the least contribution in Influenza research. The top-most journal was PloS One which had the maximum number of influenza articles (n = 94) published from SEAR countries. Research that generated actionable evidence, i.e., implementation and intervention related topics were less common. Similarly, research on pharmaceutical interventions and on innovations was low. SEAR member states had inconsistent output across the five priority research streams, and there was a much higher scope and need for collaborative research. Basic science research showed declining trends and needed reprioritization.

Interpretation

While a priority research agenda has been set for influenza at the global level through the WHO Global Influenza Program since 2009, and subsequently revisited in 2011 and again in 2016-2017, a structured contextualized approach to guide actionable evidence generation activities in SEAR has been lacking. In the backset of the Global Influenza Strategy 2019-2030 and the COVID-19 pandemic, attuning research endeavors in SEAR could help in improved pandemic influenza preparedness planning. There is a need to prioritize contextually relevant research themes within priority streams. Member states must inculcate a culture of within and inter-country collaboration to produce evidence that has regional as well as global value.

Occupational exposure to nanomaterials: A bibliometric study of publications over the last decade

Owing to the increased use of nanomaterials, the number of employees and professionals who are exposed to these chemicals is on the rise, despite the paucity of organized data on the possible dangers associated with exposure to these compounds. Multiple studies reveal that the lack of nanosafety awareness among employees and businesses is a serious problem that must be addressed. This shortage of information may result from insufficient knowledge generation or transmission. Academic publications play a significant role in producing new knowledge. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of published research on workplace nanosafety which this bibliometric analysis aims to establish the permeability and significance of nanosafety themes from an occupational safety and health viewpoint in academia, to gain a better understanding of the knowledge generation phase in the area, and detected advantages and disadvantages of the topic. Scopus was used as the data source in this study. A total of 1170 publications were gathered and analyzed. The results indicated that the United States is a leader in several aspects of nanosafety at the workplace. The synthesis of co-citation and author-keyword phrases provided insight into determining the focal points of the current study. Analysis of meta data indicates that the number of writers is rising. Nanomaterial toxicity, risk assessment, and occupational exposure are the three hottest topics in this field, according to the result. In addition, the findings included worldwide growth rate, collaborative research fields, keywords, journals, and funding agencies. The advantages and disadvantages of the knowledge creation phase of nanosafety at the workplace were examined in the conclusion.

Digital Twins: A Systematic Literature Review Based on Data Analysis and Topic Modeling

The digital twin has recently become a popular topic in research related to manufacturing, such as Industry 4.0, the industrial internet of things, and cyber-physical systems. In addition, digital twins are the focus of several research areas: construction, urban management, digital transformation of the economy, medicine, virtual reality, software testing, and others. The concept is not yet fully defined, its scope seems unlimited, and the topic is relatively new; all this can present a barrier to research. The main goal of this paper is to develop a proper methodology for visualizing the digital-twin science landscape using modern bibliometric tools, text-mining and topic-modeling, based on machine learning models—Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and BERTopic (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers). The scope of the study includes 8693 publications on the topic selected from the Scopus database, published between January 1993 and September 2022. Keyword co-occurrence analysis and topic-modeling indicate that studies on digital twins are still in the early stage of development. At the same time, the core of the topic is growing, and some topic clusters are emerging. More than 100 topics can be identified; the most popular and fastest-growing topic is ‘digital twins of industrial robots, production lines and objects.’ Further efforts are needed to verify the proposed methodology, which can be achieved by analyzing other research fields.

Growing Global Research Interest in Antimicrobial Peptides for Caries Management: A Bibliometric Analysis

Objective: Researchers are studying the use of antimicrobial peptides as functional biomaterials to prevent and treat dental caries. This study aims to investigate the global research interest in antimicrobial peptides for caries management. Methods: Two independent investigators systematically searched with keywords ('Caries' OR 'Dental caries') AND ('Antimicrobial peptide' OR 'AMP' OR 'Statherin' OR 'Histatin' OR 'Defensin' OR 'Cathelicidin') on Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus. They removed duplicate publications and screened the titles and abstracts to identify relevant publications. The included publications were summarized and classified as laboratory studies, clinical trials or reviews. The citation count and citation density of the three publication types were compared using a one-way analysis of variance. The publications' bibliometric data were analyzed using the Bibliometrix program. Results: This study included 163 publications with 115 laboratory studies (71%), 29 clinical trials (18%) and 19 reviews (11%). The number of publications per year have increased steadily since 2002. The citation densities (mean ± SD) of laboratory study publications (3.67 ± 2.73) and clinical trial publications (2.63 ± 1.85) were less than that of review articles (5.79 ± 1.27) (p = 0.002). The three publication types had no significant difference in citation count (p = 0.54). Most publications (79%, 129/163) reported the development of a novel antimicrobial peptide. China (52/163, 32%) and the US (29/163, 18%) contributed to 50% (81/163) of the publications. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis identified an increasing trend in global interest in antimicrobial peptides for caries management since 2002. The main research topic was the development of novel antimicrobial peptides. Most publications were laboratory studies, as were the three publications with the highest citation counts. Laboratory studies had high citation counts, whereas reviews had high citation density.

Scientometrics Study of Research Output on Sheep and Goats from Greece

The article studies the research output on sheep and goats from Greece; a country where small ruminant farming is the most important terrestrial animal farming business. Milk production from sheep and goats exceeds that from cattle and over 90% of total milk produced from sheep and goats is used for dairy products. Research output on sheep and goats have increased significantly from 1997 to 2022. The bulk of publications, 87.5% of relevant papers, has originated from four establishments: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; University of Thessaly; Agricultural University of Athens and Hellenic Agricultural Organization—Dimitra. Papers were published most frequently in the journals Small Ruminant Research and Journal of the Hellenic Veterinary Medical Society. The most frequent general topics of study were animal health-welfare and animal products. The findings have indicated that research has focused on milk production and diseases of the udder of small ruminants; moreover, there was accumulation of relevant research in Greece in some establishments only. The findings of the study can be used by researchers; stakeholders and Government entities to improve relevant research and to better allocate resources in the country.

Abstract

The study is a scientometrics evaluation of published articles performed in Greece on sheep and goats during the last 25 years, a period coinciding with implementation of reforms to shape and consolidate tertiary education and research establishments in the country. Objectives were: evaluation of the relevant publications and presentation of quantitative characteristics regarding scientific content and bibliometric details. The Web of Science platform was used (search terms: [[sheep OR goat*] OR [Ovis aries OR Capra hircus]] (1997–2022)) and 1080 papers were considered in detail. Throughout the study period, there was a clear progressive increase in numbers of papers published. The papers originated from 39 different entities, most from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (34.0%), University of Thessaly (28.0%), Agricultural University of Athens (21.2%) and Hellenic Agricultural Organization—Dimitra (13.6%). Papers were published in 318 different journals. Journals with more published papers were Small Ruminant Research and Journal of the Hellenic Veterinary Medical Society. The most frequent general topic of study in the papers was health and welfare (46.7% of papers); second most frequent topic was animal products (18.6%). The papers have received 16,558 citations, i.e., οn average 15.4 citations per paper; the h-index was 56, the i₁₀-index was 518 and the yearly citations per paper were 1.71. Papers on goats had higher impact than papers on sheep. There were 1711 individual authors, of which 728 were first or last authors. In total, 24 authors have each co-authored ≥2.5% of all papers; five authors were each first or last in that proportion of all papers. The findings have indicated that relevant research has focused on milk production and diseases of the udder of small ruminants; moreover, there was accumulation of relevant research in Greece in some establishments only. The findings of the study can be employed to initiate improved relevant research approaches in the country.

Industry 4.0 and the small business something behind the technology: A literature review

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are especially vulnerable to technology issues, often because they lack the financial resources or the skills to properly exploit new technologies.This paper presents the results of a study that explores the link between Industry 4.0 and SMEs through a systematic literature review. The results show that this link is dominated by themes that can be grouped into the following categories: "Industrial revolutions", "Technology", "Management", "Operations Management/ Industrial Engineering", "Social issues/ Sustainability", and "Methodology". The study shows the relevance of the topics Management, Social Issues, and Sustainability, which is not then reflected in publications of articles on Industry 4.0 in journals in these areas. Eventually, the establishment of partnerships between research teams in these areas of knowledge and the teams studying Industry 4.0 could mitigate this insufficiency. The themes Social Issues and Sustainability are underrepresented and therefore an effort is needed to develop research on the impacts of these themes on Industry 4.0 and vice versa.
