Abstract
OBJECTIVES Acetate (ACE) and lactate (LAC)-containing balanced resuscitation fluids are commonly used for fluid therapy in cats. These fluids can influence acid-base and electrolyte status. This prospective randomised study compared two balanced crystalloid solutions regarding their effect on acid-base status, electrolytes and LAC concentrations in dehydrated cats after intravenous fluid therapy. METHODS A total of 100 client-owned cats presenting to the emergency service with dehydration ⩾5% due to diarrhoea, vomiting or anorexia were included in this study. They were randomised to receive either ACE- (Sterofundin ISO; B Braun Vet Care) or LAC-containing (Ringer-Laktat nach Hartmann; B. Braun Vet Care) fluids for rehydration. Exclusion criteria were age <6 months, severe electrolyte abnormalities, severely increased creatinine or bolus therapy, and decompensated heart disease and liver diseases. Vital parameters were assessed and venous blood gas analysis was performed before and after fluid therapy. Data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U-test and the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test. The significance level was set at P ⩽0.05. RESULTS Post-rehydration pH normalised, and bicarbonate and base excess increased in both groups. Anion gap and LAC and potassium concentrations decreased in both groups. No difference in electrolyte, acid-base status and LAC was observed between cats receiving ACE and cats receiving LAC. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Both fluids have similar effects on dehydrated cats' acid-base status and electrolyte and LAC concentrations. No significant differences in values were found between ACE- and LAC-containing resuscitation fluids. Blood LAC concentration decreased in both groups.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on hematologic and biochemical markers in dogs with pyometra in sepsis. Eighteen patients were equally distributed between the control group (CG) and the hyperbaric group (HG). All patients underwent ovariohysterectomy, supportive therapy, and insertion of a central venous catheter. HG attended three HBOT sessions (2 absolute atmospheres, 45 min) postoperatively. Blood tests were performed on admission, 1 h postoperatively, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h postoperatively. Both groups showed a significant reduction in red blood cells (Hm) and hematocrit (Hto) after surgery, but this effect was reversed after three HBO sessions and maintained in CG. Despite the initial reduction in hemoglobin (Hg) in HG, the values increased again after the end of the protocol. A reduction of >50 % in leukocytes was noted in HG in the last evaluation in relation to the values at admission. Significant reduction was also found for neutrophils, metamyelocytes and rods in HG. There was no difference in biochemical markers. HBO associated with OVH and supportive therapy can be considered in the treatment of pyometra, with rapid and marked improvement, after three sessions, in the e red blood cells and leukogram.

Abstract
Sepsis is still one of the most common causes of death of animals and humans. It is marked by an aberrant immune response to infection, resulting in extensive inflammation, organ dysfunction, and, in severe instances, organ failure. Recognizable symptoms and markers of sepsis encompass substantial elevations in body temperature, respiratory rate, hemoglobin levels, and alterations in immune cell counts, including neutrophils, monocytes, and basophils, along with increases in certain acute-phase proteins. In contrast to human medicine, veterinarians must take into account some species differences. This article provides a comprehensive overview of changes in the immune system during sepsis, placing particular emphasis on species variations and exploring potential future drugs and interventions. Hence, understanding the intricate balance of the immune responses during sepsis is crucial to develop effective treatments and interventions to improve the chances of recovery in animals suffering from this serious condition.

Abstract
Fluids are drugs used in veterinary patients capable of producing beneficial therapeutic or inadvertent harmful effects within the body's intravascular, interstitial, and intracellular fluid spaces. The individualized design of a fluid therapy plan requires careful patient assessment and targeted selection of proper fluid types, administration routes, and rates, along with adjustments during therapy tailored specifically as per the individual patient's fluid requirement and therapeutic response. Personalized fluid prescriptions and vigilant patient monitoring help avoid patient morbidity from body fluid deficiencies, fluid excess, and electrolyte derangements and support better patient outcomes. These guidelines provide an overview of fluid dynamics within the fluid spaces of the body, describe various types of fluids and their uses, and outline recommendations for fluid administration for resuscitation, rehydration, and maintenance purposes. The guidelines also outline approaches to fluid therapy for anesthetized patients and reiterate the recommendations of reduced fluid rates in this population of patients. Additionally, the guidelines include practical fluid therapy strategies for patients with various common disorders. The goal of these guidelines is to help veterinary professionals safely and effectively prescribe and administer fluid therapy for canine and feline patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sepsis is a life-threatening condition for which critically important antimicrobials are often indicated. The value of blood culture for sepsis is indisputable, but appropriate guidelines on sampling and interpretation are currently lacking in cattle. OBJECTIVE Compare the diagnostic accuracy of 2 blood culture media (pediatric plus [PP] and plus aerobic [PA]) and hypoglycemia for bacteremia detection. Estimate the contamination risk of blood cultures in critically ill calves. ANIMALS One hundred twenty-six critically ill calves, 0 to 114 days. METHODS Retrospective cross-sectional study in which the performance of PP, PA and hypoglycemia to diagnose sepsis was assessed using a Bayesian latent class model. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to compare time to positivity (TTP). Potential contamination was descriptively analyzed. Isolates were considered relevant when they were; member of the Enterobacterales, isolated from both blood cultures vials, or well-known, significant bovine pathogens. RESULTS The sensitivities for PP, PA, and hypoglycemia were higher when excluding assumed contaminants; 68.7% (95% credibility interval = 30.5%-93.7%), 87.5% (47.0%-99.5%), and 61.3% (49.7%-72.4%), respectively. Specificity was estimated at 95.1% (82.2%-99.7%), 94.2% (80.7%-99.7%), and 72.4% (64.6%-79.6%), respectively. Out of 121 interpretable samples, 14.9% grew a presumed contaminant in PA, PP, or both. There was no significant difference in the TTP between PA and PP. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE PA and PP appear to outperform hypoglycemia as diagnostic tests for sepsis. PA seems most sensitive, but a larger sample size is required to verify this. Accuracy increased greatly after excluding assumed contaminants. The type of culture did not influence TTP or the contamination rate.

Abstract
Isoflurane is a commonly used inhalation anesthetic in species undergoing veterinary care that induces hypotension, impacting organ perfusion, making it imperative to minimize its occurrence or identify effective strategies for treating it. This study evaluated and compared the hemodynamic effects of DOB, NEP, VAS, and HES in twelve isoflurane-anesthetized Beagle dogs. The order of the first three treatments was randomized. HES was administered last. Data were collected before treatments (baseline) and after 10 min of a sustained MAP of <45 mmHg induced by a high end-tidal isoflurane concentration (T0). Once treatment was initiated and the target MAP was achieved (65 to 80 mmHg) or the maximum dose reached, data were collected after 15 min of stabilization (T1) and 15 min after (T2). A 15 min washout period with a MAP of ≥65 mmHg was allowed between treatments. The intravenous dosage regimens started and were increased by 50% every five minutes until the target MAP or maximum dose was reached. The dosages were as follows: DOB, 5-15 μg/kg/min; NEP, 0.1-2 μg/kg/min; VAS, 0.5-5 mU/kg/min; and HET, 6% 1-20 mL/kg/min. DOB improved CO, DO2, and VO2, but reduced SVR. VAS elevated SVR, but decreased CO, DO2, and VO2. HES minimally changed BP and mildly augmented CO, DO2, and VO2. These treatments failed to reach the target MAP. NEP increased the arterial BP, CO, MPAP, and PAWP, but reduced HR. Norepinephrine infusion at 0.44 ± 0.19 μg/kg/min was the most efficient therapy for correcting isoflurane-induced hypotension.

Abstract
Many new concepts are emerging in the understanding of fluid therapy in human and mammalian medicine, including the role of the glycocalyx, increased understanding of fluid, sodium, and chloride overload, and the advantages of colloid administration in the form of albumin. None of these concepts, however, appear to be directly applicable to non-mammalian exotic patients, and careful consideration of their alternate physiology is required when formulating fluid plans for these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sepsis is a life-threatening disease for which critically important antimicrobials (CIA) frequently are used. Diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for sepsis and critically ill calves are largely lacking. OBJECTIVES Identify factors associated with mortality in critically ill calves and describe bacteria obtained from blood cultures of critically ill calves with sepsis and their antimicrobial resistance. ANIMALS Two-hundred thirty critically ill calves, mainly Belgian Blue beef cattle. METHODS Retrospective cohort study. Logistic regression, survival analysis, and decision tree analysis were used to determine factors associated with mortality. RESULTS Of the critically ill calves, 34.3% had sepsis and 61.3% died. The final survival model indicated that calves with sepsis (hazard risk [HR]: 1.6; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.0-2.5; P = .05), abnormal behavior (HR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.3-4.0; P = .005), and hypothermia (HR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.72-0.95; P = .01) had a significantly higher mortality risk. In a second survival model, hypothermia (HR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.78-0.96; P = .004) and hypoglycemia (HR: 2.2; 95% CI: 1.5-3.3; P < .001) were risk factors for mortality. Decision tree analysis emphasized the importance of behavior, hypochloremia, hypoglycemia, hyperkalemia, and lung ultrasonography for mortality risk. Escherichia coli (30.6%) was most frequently isolated from blood cultures, of which 90.9% were multidrug resistant. Inappropriate use of antimicrobials was frequent for penicillin, amoxicillin, and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, but less for CIA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Many critically ill calves have sepsis, which increases mortality risk. Bacteria involved are often resistant to first-intention antimicrobials but less resistant to CIA. The other identified risk factors for mortality can support therapeutic decision-making.

Abstract
The endothelial glycocalyx (eGlx) is a critically important structure lining the luminal surface of endothelial cells. There is increasing evidence, in human patients and animal models, for its crucial role in the maintenance of health. Moreover, its damage is associated with the pathogenesis of multiple disease states. This review provides readers with an overview of the eGlx; summarising its structure, essential functions, and evidence for its role in disease. We highlight the lack of studies regarding the eGlx in cats and dogs, particularly in naturally occurring diseases. Importantly, we discuss techniques to aid its study, which can be applied to veterinary species. Finally, we present targeted therapies aimed at preserving, and in some cases, restoring damaged eGlx.
