Biomonitoring of Heavy Metal Pollution Using Acanthocephalans Parasite in Ecosystem: An Updated Overview

Interrelation between environmental conditions, acanthocephalan infection and metal(loid) accumulation in fish intestine: an in-depth study

Metal(loid) bioaccumulation in acanthocephalans (Dentitruncus truttae) and intestines of fish (Salmo trutta) from the Krka River, influenced by industrial and municipal wastewaters, was investigated in relation to exposure to meta(loid)s from fish gut content (GC), water, and sediment to estimate potentially available metal(loid)s responsible for toxic effects and cellular disturbances in biota. Sampling was performed in two seasons (spring and autumn) at the reference site (river source, KRS), downstream of the wastewater outlets (Town of Knin, KRK), and in the national park (KNP). Metal(loid) concentrations were measured by ICP-MS. The highest accumulation of As, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, Se and Zn was observed mainly in organisms from KRK, of Cd, Cs, Rb and Tl at KRS, and of Hg, Mn, Mo, Sr and V at KNP. Acanthocephalans showed significantly higher bioaccumulation than fish intestine, especially of toxic metals (Pb, Cd and Tl). Metal(loid) bioaccumulation in organisms partially coincided to exposure from water, sediments and food, while in GC almost all elements were elevated at KNP, reflecting the metal(loid) exposure from sediments. Seasonal differences in organisms and GC indicated higher metal(loid) accumulation in spring, which follows enhanced fish feeding rates. Higher number of acanthocephalans in the intestine influenced biodilution process and lower concentrations of metal(loid)s in fish, indicating positive effects of parasites to their host, as supported by high values of bioconcentration factors. Fish intestine and acanthocephalan D. truttae were confirmed as sensitive indicators of available metal fraction in conditions of generally low environmental exposure in karst ecosystem. Since metal(loid) accumulation depended on ecological, chemical and biological conditions, but also on the dietary habits, physiology of organisms and parasite infection, continuous monitoring is recommended to distinguish between the effects of these factors and environmental exposure when assessing dietary associated metal(loid) exposure in aquatic organisms.

Monitoring of surrogate zoonotic parasites of Anisakidae and Echinobothrium deeghai as bioindicators by application of energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXMA)

The unique characteristic of quickly altered but stable response by helminth parasites against metals and elements in a variety of aquatic ecosystems because of pollution conditions merit these as significant markers of fish health as well as of marine and freshwater ecosystems. Biomagnification of toxicants released in aquatic reservoirs by human mediated processes incorporating mining in coastal zones, industrial and agricultural inputs contributed to damaging consequences of human health due particularly to human consumption of edible fish and other biota that are exposed to contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. The metals and elements analysed could be arranged in decreasing order of concentration were found to be, P > Ca > Cd > Mn > Hg > Pb > As > Zn > S > Fe > Al > Cr > Mg > Cl. The association between Echinobothrium deeghai and Rotundocollarette capoori demonstrated surrogate relationship to drain in highly toxic heavy metals like Hg, Cr, As, Cd, from the ambience in the micro-environment of cestodes and nematodes and thus acted as benefactors for the life of the brackish water oceanodromous fish.

Acrylamide toxicity in aquatic animals and its mitigation approaches: an updated overview

Acrylamide (ACR) is widely applied in various industrial activities, as well as in the water purification process. Furthermore, ACR is synthesized naturally in some starchy grains exposed to high temperatures for an extended time during the cooking process. Because of its widespread industrial usage, ACR might be released into water stream sources. Also, ACR poses a high risk of contaminated surface and ground-water resources due to its high solubility and mobility in water. Furthermore, animal studies have indicated that ACR exposure may cause cancer (in many organs such as lung, prostate, uterus, and pancreas), genetic damage (in both somatic and germ cells), and severe effects on reproduction and development. Recently, numerous studies have shown that ACR has a mild acute cytotoxic impact on aquatic species, particularly during early life stages. Besides, wide-spectrum usage of ACR in many industrial activities presented higher environmental risks as well as major hazards to consumer health. This literature was designed to include all potential and accessible reports on ACR toxicity related with aquatic species. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews were applied to evaluate the risk effects of ACR on aquatic organisms, the ACR sub-lethal concentration in the ecosystem, and the possible protective benefits of various feed additives against ACR toxicity in fish. The major findings are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The primary aim of this literature was to specify the hazards of ACR toxicity related with fish welfare and possible suggested strategies to reduce its risks.

Helminth-host-environment interactions: Looking down from the tip of the iceberg

In 1978, the theory behind helminth parasites having the potential to regulate the abundance of their host populations was formalized based on the understanding that those helminth macroparasites that reduce survival or fecundity of the infected host population would be among the forces limiting unregulated host population growth. Now, 45 years later, a phenomenal breadth of factors that directly or indirectly affect the host-helminth interaction has emerged. Based largely on publications from the past 5 years, this review explores the host-helminth interaction from three lenses: the perspective of the helminth, the host, and the environment. What biotic and abiotic as well as social and intrinsic host factors affect helminths? What are the negative, and positive, implications for host populations and communities? What are the larger-scale implications of the host-helminth dynamic on the environment, and what evidence do we have that human-induced environmental change will modify this dynamic? The overwhelming message is that context is everything. Our understanding of second-, third-, and fourth-level interactions is extremely limited, and we are far from drawing generalizations about the myriad of microbe-helminth-host interactions.Yet the intricate, co-evolved balance and complexity of these interactions may provide a level of resilience in the face of global environmental change. Hopefully, this albeit limited compilation of recent research will spark new interdisciplinary studies, and application of the One Health approach to all helminth systems will generate new and testable conceptual frameworks that encompass our understanding of the host-helminth-environment triad.

Current Status of Omics in Biological Quality Elements for Freshwater Biomonitoring

Freshwater ecosystems have been experiencing various forms of threats, mainly since the last century. The severity of this adverse scenario presents unprecedented challenges to human health, water supply, agriculture, forestry, ecological systems, and biodiversity, among other areas. Despite the progress made in various biomonitoring techniques tailored to specific countries and biotic communities, significant constraints exist, particularly in assessing and quantifying biodiversity and its interplay with detrimental factors. Incorporating modern techniques into biomonitoring methodologies presents a challenging topic with multiple perspectives and assertions. This review aims to present a comprehensive overview of the contemporary advancements in freshwater biomonitoring, specifically by utilizing omics methodologies such as genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and multi-omics. The present study aims to elucidate the rationale behind the imperative need for modernization in this field. This will be achieved by presenting case studies, examining the diverse range of organisms that have been studied, and evaluating the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with the utilization of these methodologies. The utilization of advanced high-throughput bioinformatics techniques represents a sophisticated approach that necessitates a significant departure from the conventional practices of contemporary freshwater biomonitoring. The significant contributions of omics techniques in the context of biological quality elements (BQEs) and their interpretations in ecological problems are crucial for biomonitoring programs. Such contributions are primarily attributed to the previously overlooked identification of interactions between different levels of biological organization and their responses, isolated and combined, to specific critical conditions.

Fish parasites as proxy bioindicators of degraded water quality of River Saraswati, India

The nature and intensity of water pollution determine the effects on aquatic biota and aquatic ecosystem health. The present study aimed at assessing the impact of the degraded physicochemical regime of river Saraswati, a polluted river having a historical legacy, on the parasitic infection and the role of fish parasite as a bioindicator of water quality. Two Water Quality Indices (WQIs) were adopted as useful tools for assessing the overall water quality status of polluted river based on 10 physicochemical parameters. Total 394 fish (Channa punctata) were examined. Ectoparasite Trichodina sp., Gyrodactylus sp., and endoparasites Eustrongylides sp. were collected from the host fish. Prevalence, mean intensity and abundance for each sampling period were calculated for the determination of parasitic load. The parasitic load of Trichodina sp. and Gyrodactylus sp. was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in winter, whereas the parasitic load of Eustrongylides sp. showed no significant (p > 0.05) seasonal fluctuation. The parasitic load of ectoparasites was negatively correlated with temperature, free carbon dioxide, biochemical oxygen demand, and WAWQI but positively correlated with electrical conductivity and CCMEWQI. Fish health was found to be adversely affected by degrading water qualities and parasitic infection. A 'vicious cycle' develops as a result of the interplay among deteriorating water quality, withering fish immunological defence, and amplifying parasitic infection. Since parasitic load was strongly conditioned by the combined influence of a suite of water quality parameters the fish parasites can be used as a powerful indicator of deteriorating water quality.

Carcinogenic and human health risk assessment of children's and adults' exposure to toxic metal(oid)s from air PM10 in critical sites of the Republic of Serbia

With global urbanization and industrialization, air pollution has become an inevitable problem. Among air pollutants, toxic metals bound to particulate matter (PM) have a high hazardous potential, contributing to the development of several diseases, including various types of cancer. Due to PM pollution, Serbia is considered to be among the most polluted countries in Europe. Therefore, the objective of the study was to assess and characterize the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of children's and adults' exposure to metal(oid)s (Pb, Cd, Ni, and As) bound to PM₁₀ in five of the most polluted areas in the Republic of Serbia (Subotica, Smederevo, Bor, Valjevo, and Kraljevo). Non-carcinogenic (HQ and HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) were calculated using USEPA methodology. Our results show that PM₁₀ concentrations exceeded the annual limit of 40 μg/m³ at four out of five monitoring sites (ranging from 44.33 to 63.25 μg/m³). Results obtained from Bor monitoring station show that safe limits were exceeded for both children and adults, indicating an unacceptable risk (> 1) obtained for inhalation exposure to the As (HQ = 6.14) and Cd (HQ = 1.17), while total HI was 7.43, which characterized the risk as unacceptable. For the same station, the CR value was 1.44E^-04 (> 1 × 10^-4). In other sites, the risks were acceptable. The characterized risk from exposure to the toxic elements via PM₁₀ in critical locations in Serbia contributes to improving air quality by requiring regulatory organs to take new actions and adopt new measures to reduce air pollution.

Biomonitoring of heavy metals using Contracaecum quadripapillatum (Nematoda) in comparison to its fish host, Lates niloticus, from the Nile River, Egypt

Recently, fish parasites have been used as a biomonitoring tool to indicate the health status of ecosystems. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the potential capacity of Contracaecum quadripapillatum larvae as accumulation indicators for metal pollution and compare metal concentrations in host tissues of non-infected and infected fish: Lates niloticus from the Nile River. Accumulations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in larval nematodes and tissues of the liver, kidney, and muscles of both infected and non-infected fish were determined. All metal concentrations exhibit a significantly higher increase in larval nematodes than the muscles of infected fish and vice versa except Cd in the kidney. On the other hand, only Cd, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in the parasite than in the host liver. Therefore, bioaccumulation factors were most obvious and effective in the muscles of infected fish than in the liver and kidney. Contracaecum larvae accumulate Cd and Pb more than other metals. The infrapopulation size of C. quadripapillatum correlated with metal concentrations in different host tissues, especially the kidney, while the correlations between metal levels in the tissues of both parasite and fish organs exhibit different patterns in each organ. The current work revealed that C. quadripapillatum larvae represent environmental monitors for metal pollution in the freshwater ecosystem.

Does environmental pollution affect male reproductive system in naturally exposed vertebrates? A systematic review

Due to environmental contamination, the environment constantly receives pollutants from various anthropic actions. These pollutants put ecological health at risk due to contamination and accumulation in living organisms, including wild animals and humans. Exposure can cause physiological, morphological, and behavioral changes in living beings. In this context, laboratory studies have frequently investigated how environmental contaminants affect the male reproductive system and gametes. However, few studies have examined how these contaminants affect male reproduction in naturally exposed animals. To better understand this topic, we conducted a systematic review of the effects of exposing male vertebrate animals to polluted environments on their reproductive functions. After an extensive search using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, 39 studies met our inclusion criteria and were eligible for this review. This study showed that reproductive damages were frequent in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals exposed to contaminated environments. Wild animals are exposed mainly to endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), toxic metals, and radiation. Exposure to pollutants causes a reduction in androgen levels, impaired spermatogenesis, morphological damage to reproductive organs, and decreased sperm quality, leading to reduced fertility and population decline. Although several species have been studied, the number of studies is limited for some groups of vertebrates. Wildlife has proven valuable to our understanding of the potential effects of environmental contaminants on human and ecosystem health. Thus, some recommendations for future investigations are provided. This review also creates a baseline for the understanding state of the art in reproductive toxicology studies.

Quercetin: Putative effects on the function of cryopreserved sperms in domestic animals

Quercetin is one of the most used antioxidant flavonoids and largely exists in many fruits and vegetables because of its capability to scavenge the free reactive oxygen species (ROSs) by repressing lipid peroxy radical fusion, metal ion chelating through enzyme inhibition, and adopting the repair mechanisms. It also exhibits various biological actions, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, it contributes well to sustaining the endogenous cellular antioxidant defence system. The process of cryopreservation is associated with increased oxidative stress, and some steps are potential sources of ROSs, including the method of semen collection, handling, cryopreservation culture media, and thawing, which result in impaired sperm function. Several antioxidants have been proposed to counteract the harmful impact of ROS during semen cryopreservation. The antioxidant capability of quercetin has been verified in different animal species for providing valuable defence to sperm during the cryopreservation process. The beneficial properties of quercetin on various parameters of fresh and post-thaw sperm in different species are clarified in this review. More in-depth investigations are required to clarify quercetin's mechanism of action in different animal species.

Pollution and Potential Ecological Risk Evaluation Associated with Toxic Metals in an Impacted Mangrove Swamp in Niger Delta, Nigeria

Anthropogenic activities along coastal areas have contributed to the unwarranted discharge of toxic metals into mangrove swamps, posing risks to marine deposits and ecological environments. In this research, we studied the Isaka−Bundu tidal swamp area in the Niger Delta, which is an impacted mangrove creek located along the Bonny river, exposed to pollution pressures. The ecological risks (Er) of toxic metals in the sediments and water of the Isaka−Bundu tidal mangrove swamp followed a decreasing order (Cu > Zn > Cd > Cu > Pb > As), according to our results, while the potential ecological risk index (PERI) of the toxic metals in the sediments and water of the Isaka−Bundu tidal mangrove swamp can be said to have a very high ecological risk (PERI ≥ 600). The sediment pollution load index (PLI) was higher than 1 in all three analyzed stations, suggesting extremely toxic pollution. The enrichment evaluation shows that the studied stations have a moderate potential ecological risk of Cd, with the enrichment value for Pb showing low potential ecological risk. Our study shows that the Isaka−Bundu tidal mangrove swamp has a significant level of toxic metal pollution, which is evidence of the illegal activities performed in the Niger Delta.

The efficacy of applying some plants and herbs in cancer therapy for humans and animals – a comperhensive review

Cancer is a challenging ailment and represents the main reason for death worldwide for humans and animals. Although great developments have hindered cancer progression, several adverse effects are associated with modern chemotherapy. Natural remedies, such as the usage of medicinal plant or their products in cancer treatment, may decrease prejudicial side properties. Recently, the modern research scheme and innovative screening practices for herbs or plants have enabled phytochemical discovery for the prevention and treatment of cancer. This criticism highlights herbs such as acacia, basil, black seeds, cedar, castus, ficus, garlic, ginger, indigo, onion, pomegranate, quince, and thyme, promising anticancer effects. The present review also revealed the mode of action of each herb as anticancer effects at level in vitro and in vivo studies. The item also totalizes the vital mechanisms and signaling molecules involved in preventing cancer diseases. This will fill the investigate gap in the exploration of using natural molecules and encourage researchers in clinical trials of anticancer agents from herbs for humans and animals.

Consequences of supplementing duck's diet with charcoal on carcass criteria, meat quality, nutritional composition, and bacterial load

The influence of charcoal as feed additives on carcass and meat characteristics was studied in 144 four weeks old Muller ducks. The experimental ducklings were assigned to six groups of 24 birds (Eight per replicates each). The dietary treatments contained 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5% charcoal for G1 (C), G2 (L1), G3 (L2), G4 (L3), G5 (L4) and G6 (L5), respectively. All experimental birds were raised under similar environmental and managerial conditions. Results indicated that charcoal did not affect most carcass traits significantly except for dressing percentage was higher (P < 0.05) in 1.5 and 2 % charcoal included ducks diets compared to control ducks. Charcoal supplementation significantly affected duck meat tenderness, juiciness and water holding capacity. Moreover, charcoal altered (P < 0.05) meat components such as crude protein, calcium components, desirable fatty acids, nutritional value and some bacterial counts. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances reduced in birds fed charcoal at 1.5, 2, and 2.5%, with significant variation among treatments. No significant differences in the number of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were detected among the ducks fed with charcoal and the control group. It could be concluded that charcoal could be included in ducks' diets at 1.5 and 2% with beneficial effects on carcass parameters.

Immunological status of some edible fishes exposed to parasitic infections in relation to heavy metals pollution

In this study, six heavy metals (Pb, Fe, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Mn) have been measured in water, and muscles from mullet (Mugil cephalus), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) collected from Lake Manzal, Egypt. In addition, the existence of different encysted metacercariae in fish muscle with an evaluation of cell-mediated immune response in infected muscles was also investigated. Water samples generally contained less than the permissible level of heavy metals. The metal accumulation levels in muscle were: Pb > Ni > Cd > Cu > Fe > Mn. The levels of Pb and Ni in the muscles exceed the permissible limits, while the concentration of Mn varied significantly (p < 0.05) depending on fish species. Based on the estimated weekly intake in this study, the EWI values of these heavy metals are below the established Provisional Permissible Tolerable Weekly Intake. On the other hand, Prohemistomum vivax encysted metacercaria were found in the muscle of O. niloticus and C. gariepinus with the intensity of 1-10 cyst per 1 cm of muscle. While M. cephalus was found to be infected with Heterophyes heterophyes EMC. TNF- α1 was 10 folds upregulated in O. niloticus than in control fish. IL-1β expression in O. niloticus was upregulated by 15 folds compared with the control one. By examining C. gariepinus, the MHC II gene expression was increased by 15-fold in comparison to the control group.

Analysis of Differential Gene Expression of the Aquatic Insect Protohermes costalis (Walker) (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) in Response to Cadmium Exposure

Heavy metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems is a serious threat to aquatic organisms. Species of Megaloptera are important predators of aquatic invertebrates and have been widely used as bioindicators in assessing the quality of freshwater ecosystems. In this study, we determined the differential gene expression profile of Protohermes costalis (Walker) (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) in response to cadmium (Cd) exposure by using transcriptome analysis. A total of 60,627 unigenes were obtained in the transcriptomes of 150 mg/liter (PL), 1,000 mg/liter (PH) CdCl2 treatment, and the no Cd control (PC). Differential expression gene (DEG) analysis by pairwise comparison identified 2,794 DEGs after filtering the noninsect genes and repetitive counts. 606 DEGs were shared in comparisons of PL versus PC and PH versus PC, with 165 DEGs consistently up-regulated and 441 down-regulated by both PL and PH. Six heat shock proteins (HSPs) in the HSP70 family were identified in P. costalis and PcosHSP68 was up-regulated by both PL and PH. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) confirmed that the expression levels of PcosHSP68 in PL and PH were higher than that of PC by 31 and 197%, respectively. These results showed that exposure to Cd altered the gene expression profiles of P. costalis and the transcriptome data presented in this study provide insight into future studying on molecular mechanisms of Cd toxicity to these insects.

Renoprotective and Oxidative Stress-Modulating Effects of Taxifolin against Cadmium-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Mice

Cadmium (Cd) is an inessential trace metal that accumulates in the kidney and may lead to renal toxicity by mediating oxidative stress (OS), inflammatory reactions, and apoptosis. The main objective of this experiment was to inspect the protecting potential of taxifolin (TA) on Cd-induced renal toxicity. Adult male mice were allocated into equal five groups as follows: control, TA-treated (50 mg/kg, oral), CdCl₂-treated (4 mg/kg body weight (BW), p.o.), pretreated with TA (25 mg/kg) 1 h before CdCl₂ injection (4 mg/kg BW, p.o.), and pretreated with TA (50 mg/kg) 1 h before CdCl₂ injection (4 mg/kg BW, p.o.) for 14 days. Cd-intoxicated mice revealed higher serum urea and creatinine levels and notable histopathological alterations in the renal tissues. Malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and IL-1β were increased. In contrast, glutathione levels, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, and IL-10 levels were decreased under Cd-administered effects. Conversely, the TA pre-treatment highly protected tissues from Cd-toxicity, improved renal function, decreased MDA and NO levels, attenuated inflammation, and improved redox status in the renal tissues of Cd-intoxicated mice. The TA pre-treatment of Cd-intoxicated mice showed down-regulation of both Bax and caspase-3 protein and up-regulation of Bcl-2 protein expression in the kidney. Furthermore, TA pre-treatment induced higher upregulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) expression in kidney cells of Cd-intoxicated mice. Therefore, TA can protect renal tissues against Cd-induced nephrotoxicity via improving redox status, modulating inflammation, diminishing cell apoptosis, and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

Fish Parasites and Heavy Metals Relationship in Wild and Cultivated Fish as Potential Health Risk Assessment in Egypt

Despite wide studies of biomonitoring aquatic environment through dynamics of host–parasite interaction, bio-indicators to track the influence and accumulation of heavy metals on fish are still few. The present study sheds light on the relation between fish parasites and heavy metals as it threatens fish’s health and, as a consequence, that of humans after fish consumption. Samples of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were collected in Burullus Lake, a wild fish source, and from a private fish farm in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, in Egypt. They were exposed to various pollutants associated with anthropogenic activities to determine the levels of accumulation of Fe, Zn, and Cu, along with the top three most toxic metals (As, Cd, and Pb) in water and fish tissues of gills, intestine, liver, and muscles in both wild and farmedO. niloticus. The results showed the order of abundance: Fe &lt; Zn &lt; Pb &lt; Cu &lt; As &lt; Cd. In waters of both farmed and wild fish, there was a significant negative relation between parasite prevalence and heavy metals, including Zn, Pb, and As. Also, there was a significant positive relation between parasite prevalence with Cu while no significant relation was found with Fe and Cd. Heavy metal content was significantly higher (p&gt; 0.05) in non-infected than infected farmed and wildO. niloticus. In addition, a significantly decreased concentration (p&gt; 0.05) of essential heavy metal was recorded in wild fish compared to farmed specimens, while non-essential heavy metal was significantly higher (p&gt; 0.05) in wild compared to farmed fish. Bioaccumulation factors (BAF) of different organs ofO. niloticuswere ranked in ascending order: Liver &gt; Gills &gt; Intestine &gt; Muscles. In general, the risk assessment showed safe human consumption of farmed and wild fish under the reported environmental conditions in this study. Moreover, the parasite's presence can be adopted as a surrogate indicator to estimate the potential impact of heavy metal pollution and accumulation.

Coastal macrophytes as bioindicators of trace metals in the Asia's largest lagoon ecosystem

Coastal trace metal contamination is of serious concern and the role of new bioindicator species in monitoring of trace metals is essential. The present study quantified the concentration of trace metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in the sediment and the macrophytes of Chilika lagoon, India, and investigated the bioindicator potential of the seagrasses, saltmarshes and macroalgae. The Igeo values for sediment indicated significant contamination of Cu and Zn in seagrass, Cu, Ni and Zn in saltmarsh and moderate contamination of Cr, Cu and Pb in macroalgal ecosystems. In general, the Bio-Sediment Accumulation Factor (BSAF) indicated that the macrophytes accumulated higher concentration of Mn and Ni from the sediments. The high concentration of trace metals in the sediment of the three macrophytes ecosystems did not result in higher accumulation of the same metals in the tissues of the respective macrophytes suggesting metal specific and species-specific behaviour.

Benefits of Parasitism in Polluted Environments: A Review and Perspectives

The frequency and strength of biotic interactions are thought to be shaped by environmental conditions. In this study, we reviewed and discussed the potential effects of toxic chemicals in driving shifts along the parasite-mutualist continuum. Some parasites have the astonishing capacity to accumulate trace metals and organic pollutants from various taxa within freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems. Recent studies have provided evidence of clear benefits for the host: when exposed to contaminants, infected organisms exhibited reduced contamination levels, less severe oxidative stress, and histological alterations, as well as higher body condition and survival rate compared with their uninfected conspecifics. Such effects might arise when the costs of parasitism are lower than their benefits in specific environmental conditions. Assessing the potential outcomes for parasites exploiting contaminated hosts is a crucial but neglected issue, since ecotoxicological effects on parasites may alter interspecific relationships. We identified possible avenues for future research using innovative tools and long-term experimental manipulations of both parasitism and pollution to better understand how toxic chemicals can modulate the strength and direction of host-parasite interactions.

Parasitic anomalies observed in snow trout due to anthropogenic stress in water bodies

There is interrelationship of the environmental conditions and fish health. Decrease or increase of pollution in aquatic ecosystem have direct impact on presence or absence of parasites. Fish living under optimum environmental, well-nourished conditions are more resistant to diseases than fish weakened by malnutrition caused by parasite infestation or due to deterioration of environmental conditions because ofpollution. Fish encounters common parasites in wild and in culture systems. Parasites attach to the host through suckers and hooks and make their way inside the host through different means, which include skin, through mouth along with food, by means of gills. The hosts were collected during Jan 2019 to Jan 2020 from river Veshaw. During this study it was observed that presence of parasites causes some changes in fish which can serve as indicators of deterioration in aquatic habitat. Clinical signs were noticed in fish hosts collected from sites which received waste due to anthropogenic activities. Parasitic anomalies in the host collected from polluted site was observed to include body deformaties, gastric distention, lesions in gut, increased mucus production, damage in gill filaments etc.

2, 3-Dimethylsuccinic acid and fulvic acid attenuate lead-induced oxidative misbalance in brain tissues of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Lead has long been known as neurotoxic and immunotoxic heavy metal in human and animals including fish, whereas, 2, 3-dimethylsuccinic acid (DMSA) and fulvic acid (FA) are well-known biological chelators. The present investigation was carried out to assess the potential chelating and antioxidant effects of dietary supplementation with DMSA and FA against lead acetate (Pb)-induced oxidative stress in Nile tilapia, O. niloticus. One-hundred and eighty apparently healthy O. niloticus fish (30 ± 2.5 g) were allocated into six equal groups. The first group was fed on basal diet and served as control, while the second group was fed on DMSA-supplemented basal diets at levels of 30 mg/kg diet; the third group was fed on FA-supplemented basal diet at level of 0.3 mg/kg diet; the forth, fifths, and sixth groups were exposed to 14.4 mg Pb /L water (1/10 LC50) and feed on basal diet only, basal diet supplemented with DMSA (0.3 mg/kg diet), or basal diet supplemented with FA (0.3 mg/kg diet), respectively. Antioxidant and lipid peroxidative status, activity of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) as well as the histopathologic findings were evaluated in brain tissues, while the Pb residues were evaluated in liver, muscles, and brain tissues. The results of the present study showed that DMSA and FA decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and Pb residue in tissues of Pb-exposed fish and improved the histologic picture and brain contents of glutathione (GSH), glutathione-s-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), G6PD, LDH, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). It could be concluded that DMSA and FA supplementation exhibited potential neuroprotective effect against Pb-induced oxidative brain damages in O. niloticus through improvement of antioxidant status of the brain tissue.

A Recombinase-Based Genetic Circuit for Heavy Metal Monitoring

Rapid progress in the genetic circuit design enabled whole-cell biosensors (WCBs) to become prominent in detecting an extensive range of analytes with promise in many fields, from medical diagnostics to environmental toxicity assessment. However, several drawbacks, such as high background signal or low precision, limit WCBs to transfer from proof-of-concept studies to real-world applications, particularly for heavy metal toxicity monitoring. For an alternative WCB module design, we utilized Bxb1 recombinase that provides tight control as a switch to increase dose-response behavior concerning leakiness. The modularity of Bxb1 recombinase recognition elements allowed us to combine an engineered semi-specific heat shock response (HSR) promoter, sensitive to stress conditions including toxic ions such as cadmium, with cadmium resistance regulatory elements; a cadmium-responsive transcription factor and its cognitive promoter. We optimized the conditions for the recombinase-based cadmium biosensor to obtain increased fold change and shorter response time. This system can be expanded for various heavy metals to make an all-in-one type of WCB, even using semi-specific parts of a sensing system.

Changes in the contour of karyology and histoarchitecture of the primary respiratory organ in the fish Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters, 1852) inhabiting the polluted estuarine ecosystem

The wetland ecosystem (WE) is subject to pollution by many anthropogenic activities, including domestic and industrial effluents. These effluents may contain toxic heavy metals that can interact within the aquatic ecosystem and have a capacity to disturb the metabolic activities, histological profile, and genetic structure and functions in aquatic species inhabiting the environment. The present study observed the karyological and histological alterations in gills of the freshwater fish, Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus in two different sublethal concentrations (1% and 3%) of heavy metals in 7, 15, and 30 days of experimental periods. The heavy metals induced various structural damages such as ring chromosome, sister chromatid exchange, acrocentric association region, condensed chromosomal morphology, heterochromatin region, and nucleolar organizer region in the chromosomes of O. mossambicus treated with 1% and 3% sublethal concentrations of water sample collected from Pallikaranai wetland ecosystem. Gills exposed to 1% and 3% effluent exhibited several variations in the respiratory surfaces of gill arches or lamellae in the light and scanning microscopical study. The gills exposed to 1% concentration for 30 days showed marked necrosis, and the secondary lamellae showed the lamellar membrane's dissolution. Exposure of gills to raw effluent in the field condition was observed in the presence of Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn. Thus, this present study shows the environmental deterioration by heavy metal pollution on the structure of the gills in tilapia.

Combining ecological, eco-cultural, and environmental justice parameters to create Eco-EJ indicators to monitor cultural and environmental justices for diverse communities around contaminated sites

Assessing environmental quality often requires selection of indicators that can be employed over large spatial scales and over long-time periods to assess the health and well-being of species, natural communities, and ecosystems, and to detect changes warranting intervention. Typically, the ecologic environment and the human environment are evaluated separately and selection of indicators and monitoring approaches are not integrated even though ecological indicators may also provide information on risk to human consumers from contaminants (e.g., eco-cultural indicators) or because of disease levels. This paper is a call for ecologists and managers to consider diverse cultural and environmental injustice disparities and health issues when selecting indicators for environmental assessment and monitoring. There is an opportunity for managers and community members to work together to preserve ecological and cultural resources and heritages. We propose a paradigm that selects indicators and monitoring approaches that lend themselves to the integration of human-diversity and uniqueness in the same manner that the selection of ecological indicators and monitoring approaches consider biological species diversity and uniqueness. The proposed paradigm builds on ecological risk assessment techniques, developing analogous endpoints for neighboring communities. For example, identification and protection of human communities, particularly culturally diverse and environmental justice communities, identification of contaminant corridors (e.g., through water or green corridors) into communities, and eco-monitoring of vulnerable communities are not routine at contaminated sites. Green corridors refers to a width of wild habitat (forest, grasslands) that connects other similar habitat paths (usually a corridor runs through an urban or suburban habitat). We coin the term Eco-EJ indicators for these endpoints, including examination of (1) unique cultural relationships to resources; (2) connectedness of on-site and off-site resources and habitats; (3) health of threatened, rare, and unique cultures and communities; and (4) linkages between ecological, eco-cultural, and public health for monitoring and assessment. We also propose that assessment and monitoring include these Eco-EJ indicators, especially for communities near facilities that have extensive chemical or radiological contamination.Developing these indicators to assess risk to culturally diverse and environmental justice communities would be an equivalent goal to reducing risk for significant ecological resources (e.g., endangered species, species of special concern). These Eco-EJ indicators are complementary to the usual human health-risk assessments, would include surveys of neighboring vulnerable communities, and require time and re-organization of current data and additional data collection at site boundaries and in adjacent communities, as well as rethinking the human component of indicators. This approach lends itself to addressing some diverse cultural and environmental justice issues with current indicator selection and biomonitoring, and helps identify specific hotspots of unique ecosystem risk and environmental justice community risk. We briefly discuss ecological and eco-cultural monitoring already on-going at three Department of Energy sites to illustrate how the addition of these indicators might work and add value to environmental management and to their relationships with surrounding communities. We recommend that managers of contaminated sites convene people from culturally diverse communities, environmental justice communities, local and federal government, Tribes, resource trustees, managers, and other stakeholders to develop appropriate site-specific indicators to address environmental inequities around contaminated facilities.

A nationwide survey of trace metals and Zn isotopic signatures in mussels (Mytilus edulis) and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from the coast of South Korea

Thirteen trace metals and Zn isotopic signatures were investigated in mussels and oysters collected from the coast of South Korea to evaluate their bioavailability in bivalve mollusks. The average Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations were 2.6-17.7 times higher in oysters than mussels, and high biota sediment accumulation factors (>30) were observed for these metals in oysters. Except for Pb in mussels, most metals had no correlation with total sediment concentrations. In oysters, Fe, V, Cu, Zn, Sn, and Pb concentrations were significantly correlated with sediments. The average values of δ⁶⁶Zn_IRMM3702 in mussels, oyster, and sediments were +0.09‰, +0.12‰, and -0.06‰, respectively. Soft tissues of mussels and oysters with high Zn concentrations tended to contain lighter Zn isotopes. The results indicate that oysters are a better biomonitoring organism for metal contamination than mussels and can be used in the monitoring and management of coastal environments and ecosystems.

First Experimental Evidence for the Presence of Potentially Virulent Klebsiella oxytoca in 14 Species of Commonly Consumed Aquatic Animals, and Phenotyping and Genotyping of K. oxytoca Isolates

Klebsiella oxytoca is a recently emerging pathogen that can cause necrotizing enterocolitis, hemorrhagic colitis, sepsis-associated purpura fulminans, and infective endocarditis in humans. The bacterium is ubiquitous in water and soil environments. Nevertheless, current literature on K. oxytoca in aquatic products is rare. In this study, we surveyed K. oxytoca contamination in 41 species of consumable aquatic animals sold in July, August, and September of 2018 and 2019 in Shanghai, China, 40 of which had no history of carrying this bacterium. K. oxytoca was for the first time isolated from 14 species with high abundance in benthic animals. None of the K. oxytoca isolates (n = 125) harbored toxin genes mviM, tisB, and yqgB. However, a high occurrence of virulence-associated genes was observed, including brkB (73.6%), cdcB (66.4%), pduV (64.8%), and virk (63.2%). Resistance to sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim (56.0%) was the most predominant among the isolates, followed by chloramphenicol (6.4%), tetracycline (5.6%), and kanamycin (3.2%). Approximately 8.0% of the isolates displayed multidrug resistant phenotypes. Meanwhile, high percentages of the isolates tolerated the heavy metals Cu²⁺ (84.8%), Pb²⁺ (80.8%), Cr³⁺ (66.4%), Zn²⁺ (66.4%), and Hg²⁺ (49.6%). Different virulence and resistance profiles were observed among K. oxytoca isolates in 3 types and 14 species of aquatic animals. The ERIC-PCR-based genome fingerprinting of the 125 K. oxytoca isolates revealed 108 ERIC genotypes with 79 singletons, which demonstrated the genetic diversity of the isolates. The results of this study fill gaps for policy and research in the risk assessment of K. oxytoca in consumable aquatic animals.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in sediments of Nile River, Egypt

The Nile River is the soul of Egypt, providing more than 95% of its freshwater demand. However, it receives different pollutants discharged into the water body along its stretch from Aswan (downstream of the High Dam) to Cairo, which is approximately 950 km. Alternatively, sediments play an important role in the dynamics of the entire aquatic environment and act as a sink or a source of pollution in the overlying water under various conditions. This study assessed sediment quality and its heavy metal levels. Several indices and human health risks were determined to assess the potential ecological risk of the Nile River sediment. On the basis of the index results, Cd registered the highest pollution ranking, whereas Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Ni had the lowest effect. In another context, southern sites represented the lowest ecological risk relative to the central and northern sectors. The results of the noncarcinogenic hazard indices, hazard quotient, and hazard index in addition to the lifetime cancer risk were below the acceptable international limits, confirming that there are no adverse effects on the exposed population due to the Nile sediment.

Indus river estuary: an assessment of potential risk of contaminants and ecosystem susceptibility

Abstract

The Indus River is proclaimed  as second most plastic-polluted rivers of the world. This river is the principal river of Pakistan and supplies freshwater for agriculture and human consumption. Its terminus into the northern Arabian Sea creates a unique ecosystem that supports a variety of aquatic organisms. In this study we have evaluate the heavy metal concentration in fishes sampled from the IRE. Muscle tissues from five fish species of ecologically and economically important were sampled and the concentrations of cadmium (0.125‒1.025 µg g−1, 0.93 ± 0.33), lead (0.250‒2.560 µg g−1, 0.92 ± 0.86), arsenic (4.178‒6.337 µg g−1, 4.24 ± 2.13) and mercury (BDL‒0.116 µg g−1, 0.05 ± 0.04) were found to be beyond optimum level. We determined the pollution load index which indicated that the IRE pollution exhibits significant seasonal oscillations. In addition to the heavy metal assay we note the frequent appearance of abnormal fishes caught in the IRE, which validates the pollution load. Multivariate approaches, canonical correspondence analysis and cluster analysis, were used to evaluate the relationships among environmental variables that influence metal concentration. This study is the first to document heavy metals detected from fishes inhabiting in IRE and highlights concerns regarding the need for management measures.

Highlights

Trophic transfer of heavy metals in the marine food web based on tissue residuals

Trophic transfer of metals has been well researched in aquatic food webs; however, most studies have examined the presence of metal residuals in the entire body of marine organisms and but not in specific tissues. In this study, we determined the concentrations of Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Ni in various organs of 17 marine species, including crustaceans, gastropods, bivalves, and fishes, with different trophic levels (TLs), which were collected from the Liaodong Bay, China, in July 2019. Results showed that the liver, gill, and muscle tissues of marine species are ideal indicators for analyzing Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Ni contamination in marine environments. When the entire bodies of these marine species were considered, a bio-dilution in Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Ni was observed in the studied food web. In contrast, the metal tissue-specific bio-magnification in the entire studied food web showed different results. In the liver and gill tissues, negative correlations were found between the concentrations of cadmium and TLs, while copper bio-dilution was also observed in gill tissue. In the muscle tissues, Cu, Pb, and Ni showed bio-dilution and trophic magnification factors of Cu, Pb, and Ni ranged from 0.44 to 0.73. This study highlights the importance of tissue-specific considerations to obtain further accurate information on metal trophodynamics and trophic transfers in marine food webs, thereby enhancing the risk assessment of many elements in wildlife and human health.

Heavy metal pollution assessment in coastal sediments and bioaccumulation on seagrass (Enhalus acoroides) of Palau

Heavy metals in coastal sediments and seagrass (Enhalus acoroides) were studied to assess the pollution level and to understand the bioaccumulation of metals on different organs. The mean of metal concentrations in sediments were in the following order: Cr > Ni > As>Zn > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd > Hg. The results of principal component analysis indicate that Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As and Hg are derived from natural sources but Cd and Pb seems to be of anthropogenic sources. Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the coastal sediments were at low ecological risk level. As and Hg presented the highest ecological risk among all metals. The mean concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Hg were higher in leaves of E. acoroides than in roots. Significant correlations (p < 0.05) for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb in between sediments and in E. acoroides both leaves and roots. High bioconcentration factor (BCF) were calculated for Zn, Cd, and Hg.
