Abstract
Current agricultural and food production practices are facing extreme stress, posed by climate change and an ever-increasing human population. The pressure to feed nearly 8 billion people while maintaining a minimal impact on the environment has prompted a movement toward new, more sustainable food sources. For thousands of years, both the macro (seaweed and kelp) and micro (unicellular) forms of algae have been cultivated as a food source. Algae have evolved to be highly efficient at resource utilization and have proven to be a viable source of nutritious biomass that could address many of the current food production issues. Particularly for microalgae, studies of their large-scale growth and cultivation come from the biofuel industry; however, this knowledge can be reasonably translated into the production of algae-based food products. The ability of algae to sequester CO2 lends to its sustainability by helping to reduce the carbon footprint of its production. Additionally, algae can be produced on non-arable land using non-potable water (including brackish or seawater), which allows them to complement rather than compete with traditional agriculture. Algae inherently have the desired qualities of a sustainable food source because they produce highly digestible proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, and are rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Although algae have yet to be fully domesticated as food sources, a variety of cultivation and breeding tools exist that can be built upon to allow for the increased productivity and enhanced nutritional and organoleptic qualities that will be required to bring algae to mainstream utilization. Here we will focus on microalgae and cyanobacteria to highlight the current advancements that will expand the variety of algae-based nutritional sources, as well as outline various challenges between current biomass production and large-scale economic algae production for the food market.

Dietary xanthophyll improved growth, antioxidant, pigmentation and meat quality in the southern catfish (Silurus soldatovi meridionalis Chen). ANIMAL NUTRITION 2022; 13:101-115. Abstract
Xanthophyll has multiple physiological functions to improve the quality of farmed animals. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of xanthophyll on the growth performance, antioxidation, immunity, pigmentation and meat quality of southern catfish (Silurus soldatovi meridionalis Chen). Juvenile southern catfish (18.35 ± 0.04 g) were randomly allocated into 24 cages (30 juveniles per cage), and fed diets with different dietary xanthophyll levels (at 14, 42, 80, 108, 126 and 152 mg/kg, dry matter of diet) twice daily for 8 weeks. Results indicated that the diet with 80 mg/kg xanthophyll induced a higher specific growth rate (SGR), feed efficiency ratio and protein productive value. Moreover, the 80 mg/kg xanthophyll diet also increased complement 3, immunoglobulin M (IgM) and lysozyme content more than the other groups. The mRNA expression level of inflammation-related genes and antioxidant enzyme activities further confirmed the effects of 80 mg/kg dietary xanthophyll on improving immune response. The present study also found that the 126 mg/kg xanthophyll diet significantly enhanced the content of total carotenoids and xanthophyll, hydroxyproline, collagen and amino acid in muscle. The diet with 126 mg/kg xanthophylls also induced lower drip loss, thawing loss, centrifugal loss, cooking loss and higher muscle adhesiveness, cohesiveness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness than the other treatments. In conclusion, quadratic regression model analysis based on SGR and IgM revealed that the optimum xanthophyll level in the diet was 86.78 and 84.63 mg/kg, respectively. Moreover, broken line regression analysis based on xanthophyll content in dorsal skin and chewiness in muscle demonstrated that the optimal xanthophyll level was between 89.73 and 108.66 mg/kg in the diet of southern catfish (S. soldatovi meridionalis Chen).

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the protective effect of dietary Moringa oleifera leaf meal (MLM) supplementation against high temperature-induced stress in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). A total of 180 apparent healthy juvenile grass carp (15.48 g ± 0.054) were divided into three groups in triplicate (20 fish in each replicate). Fish were fed with diets containing 0, 1, and 5% MLM for 60 days and then subjected to a high-temperature challenge for 48 h (32-33 °C). The results revealed that feeding fish with 1 and 5% MLM resulted in a significant increase in weight gain and specific growth rate compared to the control. In addition, feed conversion ratio was significantly reduced in groups fed with MLM. No significant difference was reported in the serum cortisol level among different experimental groups before heat stress while serum glucose level significantly decreased in fish fed with 5% MLM. Serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase significantly decreased in fish fed with 1 and 5% MLM before and after heat stress. Hepatic lipid peroxidation significantly decreased in fish fed with MLM for 60 days. A non-significant increase in hepatic reduced glutathione level was reported in fish fed with 1 and 5% MLM before heat stress. Catalase and superoxide dismutase activities increased significantly in the liver of fish fed with 5% MLM. No significant change was observed in the expression profile of heat shock protein (hsp) 70 and 90 before heat stress. Meanwhile, after heat stress, up to a fivefold increase was recorded in mRNA level of hsp 70 and fourfold increase in the expression level of hsp 90 in the liver of the control fish which were not fed with MLM-supplemented diets. Fish fed with 1 and 5% MLM showed a significant decrease in the expression of hsp 70 and a non-significant decrease in the expression of hsp 90. Results of the present study suggest that supplementing the diet of grass carp with 5% MLM could improve growth and physiological performance and provide resistance against high temperature-induced stress.

Abstract
Abstract
To sustain normal development, high survival, and rapid growth, marine fish larvae require a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, which could decrease the risk of reactive oxygen species accumulations. Consequently, a 60-day feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effect of silymarin (SM) supplementation in weaning diets on the growth performance, survival, antioxidant enzyme activities, and fatty acids profile of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were investigated using SM at levels of 0, 200, 400, and 600 mg kg−1 (SM0.00, SM200, SM400, and SM600, respectively). The findings showed that, in a dose-dependent manner, increasing dietary levels of SM enhanced survival, growth, and feed utilization. In the SM600 group, the weight gain, survival, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) improved by 123.21, 11.66, and 38.72%, respectively, compared to the control group. The dose-response analysis demonstrated a strong positive correlation (R2=0.96) between SM levels and weight increase, and a strong negative correlation (R2=0.88) between SM levels and FCR. The antioxidant enzyme activities of larvae given SM-enriched diets were significantly greater than those of the control group. Compared to the control group, the CAT and SOD improved by 81.77 and 5.08 % in the SM600 group. In addition, the saturated fatty acid content reduced while the unsaturated fatty acid content increased, particularly in the SM600 group. The results indicate that supplementing the micro diet of European seabass larvae during weaning with SM at a dose of 600 mg kg-1 increases growth, survival, antioxidant status, and fatty acid profiles.

Abstract
The current perspective is a pioneering trial to assess the efficacy of the dietary supplementation of Alchemilla vulgaris powder (AVP) in the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) on growth performance, blood picture, hepatic and renal biomarkers, immune status, and serum and tissue antioxidant capacity and to investigate the resistance against Flavobacterium columnare challenge. Fish (n = 360) were distributed into six groups (three replicates each) and received increasing AVP supplementation levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 g kg-1) for 60 days. Furthermore, fish were exposed to the bacterial challenge of a virulent F. columnare strain and maintained under observation for 12 days. During the observation period, clinical signs and the cumulative mortality percentage were recorded. The results demonstrated that the growth performance, feed conversion ratio, and hematological profile were noticeably enhanced in the AVP-supplemented groups compared to the control. The most promising results of weight gain and feed conversion ratio were recorded in the groups with 6, 8, and 10 g AVP kg-1 diets in a linear regression trend. The levels of hepatorenal function indicators were maintained in a healthy range in the different dietary AVP-supplemented groups. In a dose-dependent manner, fish fed AVP dietary supplements displayed significant augmented serum levels of innate immune indicators (lysozyme, nitric oxide, and complement 3) and antioxidant biomarkers (Catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant (TAC), and reduced glutathione (GSH) with a marked decrease in myeloperoxidase (MPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels). Likewise, hepatic CAT and SOD activities were significantly improved, and the opposite trend was recorded with hepatic MDA. The highest AVP-supplemented dose (10 g/kg) recorded the highest immune-antioxidant status. Based on the study findings, we highlight the efficacy of AVP as a nutraceutical dietary supplementation for aquaculture to enhance growth, physiological performance, and immune-antioxidant status and as a natural economic antibacterial agent in O. niloticus for sustaining aquaculture. It could be concluded that the dietary supplementation of 10 g AVP/kg enhanced O. niloticus growth, physiological performance, immune-antioxidant status, and resistance against F. columnare.

Dietary Effects of Carotenoid on Growth Performance and Pigmentation in Bighead Catfish (Clarias macrocephalus Günther, 1864). FISHES 2022. Abstract
This study investigates the effects of supplemental carotenoid pigments on growth and color performance in bighead catfish (Clarias macrocephalus). Two experiments were undertaken to determine the appropriate types, feed duration, and dose of astaxanthin (As), canthaxanthin (Ca), and xanthophyll (Xa) pigments individually and in combination. In the first experiment, fish were fed with one control diet (basic diet), six experimental diets comprised of three diets of As, Ca, and Xa at a 100 mg/kg rate of supplementation, respectively, and three diets combinations of As + Ca, As + Xa, and Ca + Xa at a supplement rate of 50 mg + 50 mg/kg. The results showed no significant difference in weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), and feed conversion ratio of fish among treatments (p > 0.05) after 6 weeks. The L* (Lightness) and a* (redness) values in the Xa diet were significantly lower than other treatments, while b* (yellowness) was significantly higher than in the control and others treatments (p < 0.05). These values peaked after 4 weeks and remained stable until the end of the experiment. Consistently, the highest muscle carotenoid content (16.89 ± 0.60 mg/100 g) was found in the fish fed with the Xa diet. The Xa diet was selected for the second experiment. This experiment consisted of four Xa supplemented diets at rates of 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg and a basal diet without any Xa supplementation. The results showed that there was no difference in the SGR or SR of fish fed various Xa levels (p > 0.05). Fish fed the Xa diet of 75 mg/kg were the most preferred by consumers for the natural “yellowness” of muscle. Thus, the results suggested that additional carotenoid pigments did not affect the growth performance of fish. Farmers and feed producers could utilize Xa at an optimal dose of 75 mg/kg to enhance color performance in the market size of bighead catfish for at least 4 weeks prior to harvest.

Abstract
Pressure-mediated reflection spectroscopy (RS) measures skin carotenoid content (SCC). Continued validation of this method is pertinent to validate its use as an objective measure of fruit and vegetable intake. This study aimed to assess relationships between SCC scores and self-reported dietary carotenoid intake from 3-day food records in community dwelling older adults. This was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data among cognitively normal older adults (n=95) participating in the Nutrition Interventions for Cognitive Enhancement (NICE) study. Food-derived vitamin A (R=0.24, p<0.05) and food plus supplemental vitamin A (R=0.29, p<0.01) were correlated with SCC. All food-derived carotenoids (R: 0.20-0.39, p<0.05) except beta-cryptoxanthin and lycopene were correlated with SCC. Lutein + zeaxanthin from food more strongly correlated with SCC (R=0.38, p<0.001) than combined food plus supplemental intake (R=0.31, p=0.002). Correlations for total fruit and SCC (R=0.23, p=0.02), total vegetable and SCC (R= 0.31, p=0.002), and combined total fruit and vegetable and SCC (R=0.35, p<0.001) were significant; no sub-categories of fruit or vegetables except dark green vegetables (Rho=0.4, p<0.001) had significant correlations with SCC. The current study demonstrates RS-derived SCC scores correlate with 3-day self-reported intakes of F/V and certain carotenoids in community dwelling older adults.

Abstract
The rapid increase of incorporating silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) in different anthropogenic and industrial activities increased the discharge of these particles in the aquatic ecosystem. The environmental impact of Ag-NPs, especially the green synthesized is still not completely understood on fish. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to graded series of starch-mediated Ag-NPs at levels of 0, 3.31, 6.63, 13.25, and 26.50 mg L-1 representing 0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50% of LC50 on Nile tilapia (O. niloticus), respectively. Fish with initial weight 37.63 ± 0.41 g were maintained in 70 L glass aquaria and exposed to starch-mediated Ag-NPs (average particle size 40 nm) for 28 days. The results revealed that starch-mediated Ag-NPs induced severe changes in the mRNA levels of toxicity (CYP1A and Hsp70) and inflammatory (TNF-α and TGF-β) genes. The expression of antioxidant genes (SOD and CAT) was significantly suppressed, and the activities of their enzymes were inhibited significantly upon exposure. Simultaneously, the malondialdehyde level increased significantly with increasing the exposure levels of starch-mediated Ag-NPs. The red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit and white blood cell values were decreased significantly with doses over 3.31 mg L-1 of Ag-NPs. In addition, the total protein and globulin decreased significantly with increasing Ag-NPs in a dose-dependent manner. The liver function enzymes and kidney function indicators revealed severe toxicity with Ag-NPs exposure. In conclusion, the effect of starch-mediated Ag-NPs in doses over 3.31 mg L-1 induced obvious toxicity in the molecular and proteomic levels in Nile tilapia fingerlings.
