Clinical evaluation of a patient participation assessment system for upper extremity rehabilitation exercises

In conventional and robotic rehabilitation, the patient's active participation in exercises is essential for the maximum functional output to be received from therapy. In rehabilitation exercises performed with robotic devices, the difficulty levels of therapy tasks and the device assistance are adjusted based on the patient's therapy performance to improve active participation. However, the existing therapy performance evaluation methods are based on either some specific device designs or certain therapy tasks, which limits their widespread use. In this paper, the effectiveness of a participation assessment system, which can evaluate patients' therapy performance, tiredness, and slacking independent of any device design and therapy exercise, was clinically tested on ten patients diagnosed with frozen shoulder syndrome. The patients performed exercises using the system once a week throughout their 4-week treatment period. Multiple clinical measurements and scales were employed during the clinical study to assess patients' progress and status, such as tiredness throughout the therapy process. The clinical data, along with the patient findings obtained from the participation assessment system, were statistically analyzed and compared. The findings revealed that the patients' improvements and progress during the therapy process clinically coincide with the variations in the performance evaluation results of the system, and the implemented method successfully assesses the patients' participation during the rehabilitation exercises.

Supplementation of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) diet with different zinc sources: effects on growth performance, digestive enzymes activity, hemato-biochemical parameters, antioxidant response and liver histology

An 8-week feeding trial was carried out to examine the effect of different sources of dietary Zn on some physiological responses (performance, digestive enzymes activity, hemato-biochemical parameters, antioxidant status and liver histology) of Siberian sturgeon, Acipenser baerii. For this purpose, fish with an average weight of 100 g ± 5 were randomly allocated into four groups including control, inorganic zinc (Zn-sulfate), organic zinc (Zn-gluconate), and zinc-oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) at 50 mg Zn kg- 1 feed. Improved growth indices, namely weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were observed in fish fed Zn-gluconate supplemented diet (P < 0.0.5). The highest digestive enzymes activity was recorded in fish fed Zn-gluconate supplementation (P < 0.0.5). Hematological indices significantly increased in fish fed diet containing ZnO-NPs (P < 0.0.5). Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) of fish fed ZnO-NPs contained diet were the highest (P < 0.0.5). The highest serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes activity were observed in fish fed ZnO-NPs and inorganic/organic Zn contained diets, respectively. While liver tissue SOD and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes activity Zn were significantly increased in fish fed inorganic/organic Zn supplemented diet (P < 0.0.5). Based on liver histological results, a severe tissue changes such as necrosis and pyknosis were observed in fish fed with Zn-sulfate in comparison to other forms. In conclusion, the data of the present study confirmed that organic Zn (mainly) and nano-Zn (to some extent) could be more efficient Zn sources in Siberian sturgeon.

Exploring the impact of human-robot interaction on workers' mental stress in collaborative assembly tasks

Advances in robotics have contributed to the prevalence of human-robot collaboration (HRC). However, working and interacting with collaborative robots in close proximity can be psychologically stressful. Therefore, understanding the impacts of human-robot interaction (HRI) on mental stress is crucial for enhancing workplace well-being. To this end, this study investigated how the HRI factors - presence, complexity, and modality - affect the psychological stress of workers. We employed both the NASA-Task Load Index for subjective assessment and physiological metrics including galvanic skin responses, electromyography, and heart rate for objective evaluation. An experimental setup was implemented in which human operators worked together with a collaborative robot on Lego assembly tasks, using different interaction paradigms including pressing buttons, showing hand gestures, and giving verbal commands. The results revealed that the introduction of interactions during HRC helped reduce mental stress and that complex interactions resulted in higher mental stress than simple interactions. Meanwhile, using hand gestures led to significantly higher mental stress than pressing buttons and verbal commands. The findings provided practical insights for mitigating mental stress in the workplace and promoting wellness in the era of HRC.

Effect of short-term exposure to high-altitude hypoxic climate on feed-intake, blood glucose level and physiological responses of native and non-native goat

The exposure to high altitude and cold stress poses challenges in maintaining normal physiological standards and body homeostasis in non-native animals. To enhance our understanding of the physiology of native and non-native goats in high-altitude environments, we conducted a comparative study to examine the impact of natural hypoxic and cold stress conditions on their feed intake (FIT) and associated changes in physiological responses, including plasma glucose concentration (PGC). The study took place at an altitude of 3505.2 m above mean sea level and involved twenty-two healthy females from two different breeds of goats. This study was conducted over a period of 56 days after the arrival of non-native Black Bengal goats (BBN) and compared with native Changthangi (CHAN) goats. Both groups were extensively reared in a natural high-altitude and cold-stress environment in Leh, India, and were subjected to defined housing and management practices. The parameters evaluated included FIT, PGC, respiration rate, heart rate, pulse rate, and rectal temperature. High altitudes had a significant (p < 0.05) impact on FIT, PGC, respiration rate, heart rate, pulse rate, and rectal temperature in BBN, whereas these parameters remained stable in CHAN throughout the study period. Additionally, the detrimental effects of high-altitude stress were more pronounced in non-native goats compared to native goats. These findings suggest that physiological responses in non-native goats tend to stabilize after an initial period of adverse effects in high-altitude environments. Based on the physiological responses and glucose concentration, it is recommended to pay special attention to the nutrition of non-native goats for up to the third week (21 days) after their arrival in high-altitude areas.

Bioenergetic status of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) during the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the Southeast Pacific Ocean: An interannual scale

The bioenergetic status of fishes has been used to study their physiological responses to temporal changes at interannual scales. We evaluated the physiological responses of swordfish at an interannual scale from the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO): warm phase "El Niño" in 2015 to the cold phase "La Niña" in 2017 and under neutral conditions as well in 2019. Herein, muscle samples from females and males were analyzed to evaluate the bioenergetic status from their biochemical constituents (L: lipids, P: proteins and G: glucose, E: total energy, and FAs: fatty acid profile), elemental composition (C: carbon, N: nitrogen, H: hydrogen), and nutritional indices (L:P, C:N, DHA/C18:1n-3, DHA/C16:0 and ω3/ω6 FAs). The physiological response of swordfish showed an interaction between the year and sex. Herein, the L and E showed similar trends, with the lowest female values found in 2015 and the highest in 2019. Contrary, males showed their highest values in 2015 and lowest in 2019. FA profile differed among years and highlighted significant differences between females and males in 2019. Although the female L:P and C:N ratios were lower in 2015 than in 2017, a decreasing trend in these ratios was found from 2017 to 2019. Moreover, DHA/C18:1n-3, DHA/C16:0 and ω3/ω6 showed higher ratios in females than males in 2019. Our results coincide with the beginning of the ENSO phases; it is therefore likely that the swordfish diet changed in response to the disturbances in environmental conditions. Furthermore, the degree of individual dietary specialization found under the neutral conditions could indicate differences in the feeding behaviors of males vs. females, which may be an adaptive strategy in this species. These findings will aid in understanding the bioenergetic status of swordfish under different climatic scenarios and the current global warming, providing relevant information for the management of this resource.

A blood-based multi-biomarker approach reveals different physiological responses of common kestrels to contrasting environments

The increase of urbanization and agricultural activities is causing a dramatic reduction of natural environments. As a consequence, animals need to physiologically adjust to these novel environments, in order to exploit them for foraging and breeding. The aim of this work was to compare the physiological status among nestling common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) that were raised in nest-boxes located in more natural, rural, or urban areas in a landscape with a mosaic of land uses around Rome in Central Italy. A blood-based multi-biomarker approach was applied to evaluate physiological responses at multiple levels, including antioxidant concentrations, immunological functions, genotoxicity, and neurotoxicity. We found lower concentrations of glutathione and GSH:GSSG ratio values and higher proportions of monocytes in urban birds compared to the other areas. We also found higher DNA damage in rural compared to urban and natural krestels and inhibition of butyrylcholinesterase activity in urban and natural birds compared to rural area. Finally, we found similar values among study areas for respiratory burst, complement system, bactericidal capacity, and plasma non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity. These results suggest that (i) city life does not necessarily cause physiological alterations in kestrels compared to life in other habitats, and (ii) environmental pressures are likely to differ in typology and intensity across habitats requiring specific responses that a multi-biomarker approach can help to detect. Further studies are needed to assess which factors are responsible for the physiological differences among city, rural, and natural birds, and whether these differences are consistent across time and space.

Morphological and physiological response of amphibious Rotala rotundifolia from emergent to submerged form

Rotala rotundifolia is an amphibious aquatic plant that can live in submerged and emergent forms. It is superior in nitrogen and phosphorus removal. To elucidate its adaptation strategies from emergent to submerged conditions, phenotypic and physiological responses of R. rotundifolia were investigated during three months of submergence, at water levels of 0 cm (CK), 50 cm (W50), and 90 cm (W90). Results showed that submergence stress reduced the relative growth rate of plant height, fresh weight, and biomass accumulation, leading to root degradation and a significant decline in the root-shoot ratio. The amounts of soluble protein (SP), soluble sugar (SS), and starch in the aerial leaves of W50 and W90 decreased during the early stages of submergence compared to CK, whereas the total chlorophyll and proline contents, and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) increased. The contents of endogenous hormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin (GA), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), decreased during the change in leaf shape; the decline in ABA was more obvious. The leaf primordium generated transition leaves and submerged leaves to resolve the "carbon starvation" of plants. The maximum values of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in the leaves of W50 and W90 occurred at day 30, reaching 14.0 mg g- 1and 10.5 mg g- 1, respectively. The contents of SP and starch, activities of SOD and CAT of the roots in submerged treatments increased, while SS and proline content decreased at day 7. These results demonstrated that developing heterophyllous leaves, increasing chlorophyll content, and regulating plant carbon allocation and consumption were important mechanisms of R. rotundifolia to adapt to underwater habitats.

Sewage sludge amendment of rice as a potential alternative to mineral fertilizer: Analyses of physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of plant response

Sewage sludge (SS) disposal poses environmental concerns, yet its organic matter, macro- and micronutrients, make it potentially beneficial for enhancing soil quality and crop yield. This study focuses on three types of SS: "R10" (SS1), which is commonly used in agricultural practices, and two environmentally friendlier options (SS2 and SS3), as alternatives to mineral fertilizer (urea) for rice cultivation. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the ecophysiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of rice at three different growth stages. SS application led to a significant increase in biomass production (particularly SS3), along with increased nitrogen (N) levels. Enhanced chlorophyll content was observed in SS-treated plants, especially during inflorescence emergence (with the highest content in SS3 plants). At the ecophysiological and biochemical levels, SS treatments did not adversely affect plant health, as evidenced by unchanged values of maximal PSII photochemical efficiency and malondialdehyde by-products. At biochemical and gene expression levels, antioxidant enzyme activities showed transient variations, likely related to physiological adjustments rather than oxidative stress. Ascorbic acid and glutathione did not significantly vary. This study concludes that the use of SS in soil can be a viable alternative fertilizer for rice plants, with positive effects on biomass, chlorophyll content, and no adverse effects on plant health. Among the tested SSs, SS3 showed the most positive effect, even compared to commercial fertilizer. These results suggest that SS application could improve rice yield while addressing environmental concerns surrounding SS disposal.

Silicon a key player to mitigate chromium toxicity in plants: Mechanisms and future prospective

Chromium is a serious heavy metal (HM) and its concentration in plant-soil interface is soaring due to anthropogenic activities, unregulated disposals, and lack of efficient treatments. High concentration of Cr is toxic to ecosystems and human health. Cr stress also diminishes the plant performance by changing the plant's vegetative and reproductive development that ultimately affects sustainable crop production. Silicon (Si) is the second-most prevalent element in the crust of the planet, and has demonstrated a remarkable potential to minimize the HM toxicity. Amending soils with Si mitigates adverse effects of Cr by improving plant physiological, biochemical, and molecular functioning and ensuring better Cr immobilization, compartmentation, and co-precipitation. However, there is no comprehensive review on the role of Si to mitigate Cr toxicity in plants. Thus, in this present review; the discussion has been carried on; 1) the source of Cr, 2) underlying mechanisms of Cr uptake by plants, 3) how Si affects the plant functioning to reduce Cr toxicity, 4) how Si can cause immobilization, compartmentation, and co-precipitation 5) strategies to improve Si accumulation in plants to counter Cr toxicity. We also discussed the knowledge gaps and future research needs. The present review reports up-to-date knowledge about the role of Si to mitigate Cr toxicity and it will help to get better crop productivity in Cr-contaminated soils. The findings of the current review will educate the readers on Si functions in reducing Cr toxicity and will offer new ideas to develop Cr tolerance in plants through the use of Si.

Hematological, biochemical and oxidative responses induced by thermal shock in juvenile Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) and its hybrid Tambatinga (Colossoma macropomum x Piaractus brachypomus)

The effects of thermal shock on hematological, biochemical and antioxidant responses were evaluated in liver tissue of juvenile tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) and tambatinga (♀ C. macropomum × ♂ Piaractus brachypomus). Forty juveniles of tambaqui and 40 juveniles of tambatinga, of the same age and with an initial weight of 23.3 ± 6.7 g, were randomly distributed in eight 28L circular tanks. A tank (n = 10 fish) of tambaqui and a tank (n = 10 fish) of tambatinga were then used to obtain basal data. The other animals were subjected to thermal shock with sudden temperature reduction from 28 to 18 ºC. Blood and tissue were then collected after 1, 6 and 24 h from the onset of thermal shock. No mortality was observed during the experimental period. Thermal shock increased triglyceride levels after 24 h of stress for tambaqui and reduced values for tambatinga. There was an effect on plasma glucose only for fish group (P < 0.0001) and collection time (P < 0.0001) with a peak observed for the hybrid after 6 h. The interaction of factors for SOD indicated greater activity for tambatinga at the 6 h collection and lower at basal and 1 h collections. There was an interaction for CAT (P = 0.0020) with less activity for tambatinga at 1 h. However, thermal shock and hybridization did not influence GST and TBARS levels in liver tissue. Therefore, the results suggest that the hybrid, tambatinga, is more efficient at promoting adjustments of biochemical responses and antioxidant enzymes during thermal shock.

Evaluation of bicyclist physiological response and visual attention in commercial vehicle loading zones

INTRODUCTION

With growing freight operations throughout the world, there is a push for transportation systems to accommodate trucks during loading and unloading operations. Currently, many urban locations do not provide loading and unloading zones, which results in trucks parking in places that obstruct bicyclist's roadway infrastructure (e.g., bicycle lanes).

METHOD

To understand the implications of these truck operations, a bicycle simulation experiment was designed to evaluate the impact of commercial vehicle loading and unloading activities on safe and efficient bicycle operations in a shared urban roadway environment. A fully counterbalanced, partially randomized, factorial design was chosen to explore three independent variables: commercial vehicle loading zone (CVLZ) sizes with three levels (i.e., no CVLZ, Min CVLZ, and Max CVLZ), courier position with three levels (i.e., no courier, behind the truck, beside the truck), and with and without loading accessories. Bicyclist's physiological response and eye tracking were used as performance measures. Data were obtained from 48 participants, resulting in 864 observations in 18 experimental scenarios using linear mixed-effects models (LMM).

RESULTS

Results from the LMMs suggest that loading zone size and courier position had the greatest effect on bicyclist's physiological responses. Bicyclists had approximately two peaks-per-minute higher when riding in the condition that included no CVLZ and courier on the side compared to the base conditions (i.e., Max CVLZ and no courier). Additionally, when the courier was beside the truck, bicyclist's eye fixation durations (sec) were one (s) greater than when the courier was located behind the truck, indicating that bicyclists were more alert as they passed by the courier. The presence of accessories had the lowest influence on both bicyclists' physiological response and eye tracking measures.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

These findings could support better roadway and CVLZ design guidelines, which will allow our urban street system to operate more efficiently, safely, and reliable for all users.

An analysis of physiological responses as indicators of driver takeover readiness in conditionally automated driving

By the year 2045, it is projected that Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) will make up half of the new vehicle market. Successful adoption of AVs can reduce drivers' stress and fatigue, curb traffic congestion, and improve safety, mobility, and economic efficiency. Due to the limited intelligence in relevant technologies, human-in-the-loop modalities are still necessary to ensure the safety of AVs at current or near future stages, because the vehicles may not be able to handle all emergencies. Therefore, it is important to know the takeover readiness of the drivers to ensure the takeover quality and avoid any potential accidents. To achieve this, a comprehensive understanding of the drivers' physiological states is crucial. However, there is a lack of systematic analysis of the correlation between different human physiological responses and takeover behaviors which could serve as important references for future studies to determine the types of data to use. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects of takeover behaviors on the common physiological indicators. A program for conditional automation was developed based on a game engine and applied to a driving simulator. The experiment incorporated three types of secondary tasks, three takeover events, and two traffic densities. Brain signals, Skin Conductance Level (SCL), and Heart Rate (HR) of the participants were collected while they were performing the driving simulations. The Frontal Asymmetry Index (FAI) (as an indicator of engagement) and Mental Workload (MWL) were calculated from the brain signals to indicate the mental states of the participants. The results revealed that the FAI of the drivers would slightly decrease after the takeover alerts were issued when they were doing secondary tasks prior to the takeover activities, and the higher difficulty of the secondary tasks could lead to lower overall FAI during the takeover periods. In contrast, The MWL and SCL increased during the takeover periods. The HR also increased rapidly at the beginning of the takeover period but dropped back to a normal level quickly. It was found that a fake takeover alert would lead to lower overall HR, slower increase, and lower peak of SCL during the takeover periods. Moreover, the higher traffic density scenarios were associated with higher MWL, and a more difficult secondary task would lead to higher MWL and HR during the takeover activities. A preliminary discussion of the correlation between the physiological data, takeover scenario, and vehicle data (that relevant to takeover readiness) was then conducted, revealing that although takeover event, SCL, and HR had slightly higher correlations with the maximum acceleration and reaction time, none of them dominated the takeover readiness. In addition, the analysis of the data across different participants was conducted, which emphasized the importance of considering standardization or normalization of the data when they were further used as input features for estimating takeover readiness. Overall, the results presented in this paper offer profound insights into the patterns of physiological data changes during takeover periods. These findings can be used as benchmarks for utilizing these variables as indicators of takeover preparedness and performance in future research endeavors.

Physio-molecular responses of tomato cultivars to biotic stress: Exploring the interplay between Alternaria alternata OP881811 infection and plant defence mechanisms

Plant fungal diseases impose a formidable challenge for global agricultural productivity, a meticulous examination of host-pathogen interactions. In this intricate study, an exhaustive investigation was conducted on infected tomatoes obtained from Egyptian fields, leading to the precise molecular identification of the fungal isolate as Alternaria alternata (OP881811), and the isolate showed high identity with Chinese isolates (ON973896 and ON790502). Subsequently, fourteen diverse tomato cultivars; Cv Ferment, Cv 103, Cv Damber, Cv 186, Cv 4094, Cv Angham, Cv N 17, Cv Gesma, Cv 010, Cv branch, cv 2020, Cv 023, Cv Gana and Cv 380 were meticulously assessed to discern their susceptibility levels upon inoculation with Alternaria alternata. Thorough scrutiny of disease symptom manifestation and the extent of tomato leaf damage ensued, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of cultivar responses. Results unveiled a spectrum of plant susceptibility, with three cultivars exhibiting heightened vulnerability (Cv Ferment, Cv 103 and Cv Damber), five cultivars displaying moderate susceptibility (Cv 186, Cv 4094, Cv Angham, Cv N 17 and Cv Gesma), and six cultivars demonstrating remarkable resilience to the pathogen (Cv 010, Cv branch, cv, 2020; Cv 023, Cv Gana and Cv 380). In order to gain a thorough understanding of the underlying physiological patterns indicative of plant resistance against A. alternata, an in-depth exploration of polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant enzymes ensued. These key indicators were closely examined, offering valuable insights into the interplay between plant physiology and pathogen response. Robust correlations emerged, with higher contents of these compounds correlating with heightened susceptibility, while lower levels were indicative of enhanced plant tolerance. In tandem with the physiological assessment, a thorough investigation of four pivotal defensive genes (PR5, PPO, PR3, and POX) was undertaken, employing cutting-edge Real-Time PCR technology. Gene expression profiles displayed intriguing variations across the evaluated tomato cultivars, ultimately facilitating the classification of cultivars into distinct groups based on their levels of resistance, moderate susceptibility, or heightened sensitivity. By unravelling the intricate dynamics of plant susceptibility, physiological responses, and patterns of gene expression, this comprehensive study paves the way for targeted strategies to combat plant fungal diseases. The findings contribute valuable insights into host-pathogen interactions and empower agricultural stakeholders with the knowledge required to fortify crop resilience and safeguard global food security.

Study on the dynamic effects of plateau hypoxic and cold environment on the thermal adaptation of short-term sojourners in Xizang

The plateau hypoxic environment can affect the thermoregulation process of the human body, and due to the different acclimatization ability to the hypoxic environment, the thermal requirements among the people who enter Xizang at different times may be different. Accordingly, this study aims to clarify how plateau hypoxic environments influence the physiological and subjective responses of people entering Xizang at different times. And field experiments were conducted in Xi'an and Lhasa, respectively, to compare the thermal responses and oxygen responses of the subjects under different temperature conditions on the plain, the first day of entering Xizang and the 15th day of entering Xizang. The results showed that under the hypoxic environment, the thermal sensation of the subjects decreased. With the extension of the time entering Xizang, the influence of the hypoxic environment on thermal comfort was gradually weakened, but under the low temperature environment, the effect of hypoxia on thermal response was not significantly reduced. The results of this study can help to reveal how plateau hypoxic environments affect human thermal comfort and provide a theoretical basis for the design of indoor thermal environment parameters suitable for sojourners entering Xizang at different times.

Effects of virtual reality-based cue exposure therapy on craving and physiological responses in alcohol-dependent patients-a randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Cue exposure therapy is used to treat alcohol dependence. However, its effectiveness is controversial due to the limitations of the clinical treatment setting. Virtual reality technology may improve the therapeutic effect. The aim of this study is to explore whether virtual reality-based cue exposure therapy can reduce the psychological craving and physiological responses of patients with alcohol dependence.

METHODS

Forty-four male alcohol-dependent patients were recruited and divided into the study group (n = 23) and the control group (n = 21) according to a random number table. The control group received only conventional clinical treatment for alcohol dependence. The study group received conventional clinical treatment with the addition of VR cue exposure (treatment). The primary outcome was to assess psychological craving and physiological responses to cues of patients before and after treatment.

RESULTS

After virtual reality-based cue exposure therapy, the changes in VAS and heart rate before and after cue exposure in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05), while the changes in skin conductance and respiration between the study group and the control group were not significantly different (P > 0.05). The changes in VAS and heart rate before and after cue exposure in the study group were significantly lower than those before treatment (P < 0.05), while the changes in skin conductance and respiration were not significantly different from those before treatment (P > 0.05). The changes in VAS, heart rate, skin conductance and respiration before and after cue exposure in the control group were not significantly different from those before treatment (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Virtual reality-based cue exposure therapy can reduce the psychological craving and part of the physiological responses of alcohol-dependent patients during cue exposure in the short term and may be helpful in the treatment of alcohol dependence.

Compensatory response of Hong Kong oysters to co-occurring stressors: Zinc oxide nanoparticles and low salinity exposure

Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), due to their ubiquitous use in industrial and consumer applications, present potential risks to marine ecosystems and biota, especially oysters. The physiological and immunological health of marine species is highly dependent on salinity levels. However, the combined impact of lowered salinity and exposure to ZnO NPs, particularly on key marine species like oysters, is an area that requires more research. Our study aimed to examine these concurrent stressors' impacts on phenotypic markers, gill and hepatopancreas physiological indices, and hemocyte immune parameters of Crassostrea hongkongensis. We subjected six oyster cohorts to varied ZnO NPs concentrations and salinity levels over 21 days. Our findings reveal that individual exposure to ZnO NPs or diminished salinity disrupts oyster physiology, impacting metabolism, antioxidant capacity, immune response, and energy distribution through distinct mechanisms. Remarkably, low salinity constituted a more significant threat than isolated ZnO NPs. However, when confronted with combined stressors, oysters exhibited a compensatory response, attenuating individual stressors' detrimental effects. This adaptation was characterised by reduced apoptosis rates, increased calcium ion concentration in mature hemocytes, and a restoration of conditioned indices, hepatopancreas alkaline phosphatase, and gill catalase activity to baseline levels. Principal Component Analysis and Integrated Biomarker Responses validated this compensatory phenomenon. Partial Least Squares Pathway Model analysis underscored these stressors' profound implications on oyster health, primarily driven by stressor exposure rather than mere zinc concentrations, despite acknowledging zinc's immunosuppressive impact on oyster immunity. Our research emphasises the importance of assessing multiple stressors' cumulative effects on aquatic species' ecological resilience, accentuating the need for comprehensive analyses incorporating functional specificity among diverse organs and immune components, including gill, hepatopancreas, and the critical hemocytes.

Microplastic size-dependent biochemical and molecular effects in alga Heterosigma akashiwo

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) are increasingly prevalent contaminants in marine ecosystems and have a variety of negative impacts on marine organisms. While their toxic impact on freshwater microalgae has been well-documented, limited research has been conducted on the influence of MNPs on marine red tide algae, despite their significant implications for human health and coastal ecological stability. This study investigated the physiological, biochemical and molecular reactions of the common harmful algal species, Heterosigma akashiwo, when exposed to polystyrene (PS) MNPs of 80 nm and 1 µm in size with the concentrations of 0, 1, 10, and 20 mg L-1 in 12 days. The results showed that 80 nm-sized MNPs (at concentrations of 10 mg L-1 and 20 mg L-1) inhibited algal growth. Despite the increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and up-regulation of glutathione metabolism, exposure-induced oxidative stress remained the main cause of the inhibition. Up-regulation of aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis and amino acid biosynthesis pathways provide the necessary amino acid feedstock for the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD. 1 µm sized PS MNPs increased chlorophyll a (Chl-a) content without significant effects on other parameters. In addition, H. akashiwo have an effective self-regulation ability to defend against two sized MNPs stress at concentrations of 1 mg L-1 by upregulating gene expression related to endocytosis, biotin metabolism, and oxidative phosphorylation. These results provided evidence that H. akashiwo was able to resist exposure to 1 µm MPs, whereas 80 nm NPs exerted a toxic effect on H. akashiwo. This study deepens our understanding of the interaction between MNPs and marine harmful algal at the transcriptional level, providing valuable insights for further evaluating the potential impact of PS MNPs on harmful algal blooms in marine ecosystems.

Biodegradation of polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and polylactic acid microplastics in Tenebrio molitor larvae: Physiological responses

It is widely understood that microplastics (MPs) can induce various biological stresses in macroinvertebrates that are incapable of biodegrading plastics. However, the biodegradation and physiological responses of plastic-degrading macroinvertebrates toward MPs of different degradability levels remain unexplored. In this study, Tenebrio molitor larvae (mealworms) were selected as a model of plastics-degrading macroinvertebrate, and were tested against three common plastics of different degradability rankings: polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs (size <300 μm). These three MPs were biodegraded with the rate sequence of PLA > PS > PVC, resulting in a reversed order of negative physiological responses (body weight loss, decreased survival, and biomass depletion) of mealworms. Simultaneously, the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzyme activities, and lipid peroxidation were uniformly increased as polymer degradability decreased and intermediate toxicity increased. PVC MPs exhibited higher toxicity than the other two polymers. The oxidative stresses were effectively alleviated by supplementing co-diet bran. The T. molitor larvae fed with PLA plus bran showed sustainable growth without an increase in oxidative stress. The results provide new insights into the biotoxicity of MPs on macroinvertebrates and offer comprehensive information on the physiological stress responses of plastic-degrading macroinvertebrates during the biodegradation of plastics with different degradability levels.

Key parameters of physiological responses to acute heat stress in two commercial layers determined by Fisher discriminant analyses

Given the escalating global warming and the intense nature of modern poultry production, layers are becoming increasingly susceptible to heat stress. This stress disrupts the physiological processes of layers, which leads to reduced productivity and welfare. To address this issue, it is crucial to first evaluate the stress response systematically. However, such evaluations are still lacking in this field. The objective of this study was to accurately monitor the impact of thermal stress and identify common and key indicators that would support decision-making to maintain layer welfare and productivity under stress. We constructed two heat stress models to reflect moderate (32 °C) to severe (36 °C) stress effects and obtained a comprehensive profile of blood physiological parameters associated with the layers' responses to heat stress. We found that genetic differences had limited influence on their physiological responses to heat stress after 32 °C heat challenges. Using 8 selected and significantly changed parameters, layers' physiological status under heat stress could be accurately determined (judgmental accuracy of 98%). As ambient temperature increased to 36 °C, birds suffered more severe challenges that parameters changed in larger percentages. Additionally, breed variations of the physiological responses became apparent, a Fisher discriminant function based on 5 selected parameters could distinguish heat stress effects at 32 °C or 36 °C with 80% accuracy. The results obtained from this study provide two discriminant models for assessing heat stress and shed lights on developing effective and widely applicable heat stress mitigation strategies targeting these indicators.

Wearable-based human flow experience recognition enhanced by transfer learning methods using emotion data

BACKGROUND

Flow experience is a specific positive and affective state that occurs when humans are completely absorbed in an activity and forget everything else. This state can lead to high performance, well-being, and productivity at work. Few studies have been conducted to determine the human flow experience using physiological wearable sensor devices. Other studies rely on self-reported data.

METHODS

In this article, we use physiological data collected from 25 subjects with multimodal sensing devices, in particular the Empatica E4 wristband, the Emotiv Epoc X electroencephalography (EEG) headset, and the Biosignalplux RespiBAN - in arithmetic and reading tasks to automatically discriminate between flow and non-flow states using feature engineering and deep feature learning approaches. The most meaningful wearable device for flow detection is determined by comparing the performances of each device. We also investigate the connection between emotions and flow by testing transfer learning techniques involving an emotion recognition-related task on the source domain.

RESULTS

The EEG sensor modalities yielded the best performances with an accuracy of 64.97%, and a macro Averaged F1 (AF1) score of 64.95%. An accuracy of 73.63% and an AF1 score of 72.70% were obtained after fusing all sensor modalities from all devices. Additionally, our proposed transfer learning approach using emotional arousal classification on the DEAP dataset led to an increase in performances with an accuracy of 75.10% and an AF1 score of 74.92%.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggest that effective discrimination between flow and non-flow states is possible with multimodal sensor data. The success of transfer learning using the DEAP emotion dataset as a source domain indicates that emotions and flow are connected, and emotion recognition can be used as a latent task to enhance the performance of flow recognition.

Utilizing hydrothermal time models to assess the effects of temperature and osmotic stress on maize (Zea mays L.) germination and physiological responses

The application of germination models in economic crop management makes them extremely useful for predicting seed germination. Hence, we examined the effect of varying water potentials (Ψs; 0. - 0.3, - 0.6, - 0.9, - 1.2 MPa) and temperatures (Ts; 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 °C) on maize germination and enzymatic antioxidant mechanism. We observed that varying Ts and Ψs significantly influenced germination percentage (GP) and germination rate (GR), and other germination parameters, including germination rate index (GRI), germination index (GI), mean germination index (MGI), mean germination time (MGT), coefficient of the velocity of germination (CVG), and germination energy (GE) (p ≤ 0.01). Maximum (87.60) and minimum (55.20) hydro-time constant (θH) were reported at 35 °C and 20 °C, respectively. In addition, base water potential at 50 percentiles was highest at 30 °C (15.84 MPa) and lowest at 20 °C (15.46 MPa). Furthermore, the optimal, low, and ceiling T (To, Tb and Tc, respectively) were determined as 30 °C, 20 °C and 40 °C, respectively. The highest θT1 and θT2 were reported at 40 °C (0 MPa) and 20 °C (- 0.9 MPa), respectively. HTT has a higher value (R2 = 0.43 at 40 °C) at sub-optimal than supra-optimal temperatures (R2 = 0.41 at 40 °C). Antioxidant enzymes, including peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), increased with decreasing Ψs. In contrast, CAT and POD were higher at 20 °C and 40 °C but declined at 25, 30, and 35 °C. The APX and GPX remained unchanged at 20, 25, 30, and 40 °C but declined at 35 °C. Thus, maintaining enzymatic activity is a protective mechanism against oxidative stress. A decline in germination characteristics may result from energy diverting to anti-stress tools (antioxidant enzymes) necessary for eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS) to reduce salinity-induced oxidative damage. The parameters examined in this study are easily applicable to simulation models of Z. mays L. germination under extreme environmental conditions characterized by water deficits and temperature fluctuations.

The effect of incorporating dietary green seaweed (Ulva sp.) on growth performance, blood parameters, and carcass and meat quality characteristics of Jumbo quail

Seaweeds are functional aquatic plants that can be used in Jumbo quail (Coturnix sp.) feeds as sources of phytochemicals and nutrients. However, no studies have investigated the feed value of green seaweed (Ulva sp.) meal (SM) for the Jumbo quail. Thus, the impact of different dietary inclusion levels of SM on productive traits, serum biochemistry, haematology, visceral organ sizes, carcass features, and meat quality attributes in Jumbo quail was investigated. In a completely randomised design, one-week-old quail (n = 385; 67.7 ± 3.44 g body weight) were allotted to five treatments, with seven replicate pens (experimental unit). The treatments were produced by including 0 (SM0), 20 (SM20), 40 (SM40), 60 (SM60) and 80 g/kg (SM80) of green SM in a commercial grower diet. Regression results showed no linear or quadratic effects (P > 0.05) to different levels of SM for average weekly feed intake, overall weight gain, haematological indices, internal organs, carcass features, and meat quality characteristics of the birds. However, incorporating SM up to 80 g/kg in the diet linearly reduced overall gain-to-feed ratio (G:F) [R2 = 0.282; P = 0.0001] and slaughter weights [R2 = 0.159; P = 0.026]. Treatment SM80 promoted (P < 0.05) higher feed intake than diet SM60 in weeks 3, 4 and 5, but were comparable to the control treatment in weeks 4 and 5. Birds fed with diets SM0 and SM20 had higher (P < 0.05) overall weight gain than birds fed with diet SM60. Diet SM80 resulted in lower (P < 0.05) overall G:F (0.250) than diet SM0 (0.277). Higher slaughter weights were observed on SM0 and SM20 groups than the SM60 group. We concluded that the use of dietary green SM up to 80 g/kg in Jumbo quail feeds compromises gain-to-feed ratio and slaughter weights but not physiological and meat quality attributes.

Effects of live music during hemodialysis treatments in pediatric patients

BACKGROUND

Engaging chronically ill pediatric patients with live music has been associated with improved physiological and psychological well-being. However, the impact of live music during hemodialysis treatments has yet to be assessed, in particular in pediatric patients. This study focuses on the effects of live music therapy during chronic hemodialysis treatment.

METHODS

An experimental design with randomization was applied in this pilot study. A total of 16 participants with kidney failure requiring hemodialysis participated in the study. In addition to their usual care (N = 96 measurements), the patients in the experimental group listened to 30 min of live music during their hemodialysis procedure. The control group was observed for 30 min while they received their usual care (N = 96 measurements) and were exposed to a series of animated videos that were broadcast in the common room where hemodialysis treatment is performed. Data concerning heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of depression and anxiety were collected for analysis.

RESULTS

Live music significantly reduced heart rate (p < 0.05), systolic pressure (p < 0.05) and diastolic pressure (p < 0.05). The findings also highlighted that, after listening to live music, there was a significant decrease in anxiety and depression (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

In our small study sample, live music improved some physiological and psychological indices in pediatric hemodialysis patients. Further research evaluating larger samples with longitudinal follow-up is required.

Physiological responses, trunk posture, and work pace in commercial building cleaning in Washington State: An observational field study

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to investigate whether work pace is a critical indicator for predicting a janitor's risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs).

METHOD

Field measurements were obtained from commercial building janitors as well as the determination of work pace. Physiological responses collected were heart rate, energy expenditure (calories), activity level (METs), steps, trunk posture. Data were obtained using direct measurements, along with a time study, which was performed by shadowing 13 janitors in Washington State. The measured values were summarized descriptively, and five of the most common janitorial tasks were compared. The relationships between work pace and the physiological response variables were determined by calculating the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients.

RESULTS

The highest average percent heart rate reserve (47.4%) was reported during restroom cleaning, while the highest activity and energy expenditure levels (3.6 METs and 217.1 calories/h) were reported for mopping. The top 90% of trunk flexion angles and the highest percentage of time in trunk flexion from 20° to 60° were recorded during restroom cleaning. Restroom cleaning showed the highest correlation between all the physiological response variables and work pace. In most of the tasks, a high work pace may have increased the degree and duration of severe trunk flexion.

CONCLUSION

Overall, when several tasks were considered, the extent of physiological responses, trunk joint angles, and exposure time to awkward postures tended to increase with an increase in work pace.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

This study showed the feasibility of using the work pace measured from time studies as a predictive indicator of WMSDs risks. Using this information, managers may compose a schedule that can minimize WMSDs risks while considering actual work pace deviations that may impact a janitor's ability to complete assigned tasks properly within a shift.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles improve element uptake, antioxidant properties, and essential oil productivity of Melissa officinalis L. seedlings under in vitro drought stress

In vitro drought stress has a considerable impact on the mass production of active compounds in medicinal plants. Nevertheless, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and protein synthesis may be negatively affected by drought, which results in poor growth. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have recently been shown to play an important role in increasing nutrient uptake, resistance to various environmental stresses, and better plant growth. Regarding the importance of pharmaceutical metabolites of Melissa officinalis L., this experiment aimed to assess the role of TiO2 NPs in improving physiological responses and phytochemical properties in M. officinalis under in vitro drought stress. For this, two-week-old seedlings were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0, 50, and 100 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs and 0, 3, and 6% (w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG). Two weeks after treatments, a reduction of chlorophyll, protein content, essential elements, and enhancement of H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were seen as a result of drought stress. It was observed that M. officinalis partially responded to the drought by increasing non-enzymatic antioxidants, including phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin and ascorbate peroxidase activity. Moreover, PEG-induced drought stress increased some important essential oil content such as limonene, alpha-pinene, myrcene, γ-3-carene, citral, and carvacrol; however, the results showed that TiO2 NPs not only increased the quantity of essential oils but also led to tolerance to the drought stress by increasing photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant systems, absorption of essential nutrients, and decreasing H2O2 and MDA levels.

Understanding anxiety symptoms as aberrant defensive responding along the threat imminence continuum

Threat-anticipatory defensive responses have evolved to promote survival in a dynamic world. While inherently adaptive, aberrant expression of defensive responses to potential threat could manifest as pathological anxiety, which is prevalent, impairing, and associated with adverse outcomes. Extensive translational neuroscience research indicates that normative defensive responses are organized by threat imminence, such that distinct response patterns are observed in each phase of threat encounter and orchestrated by partially conserved neural circuitry. Anxiety symptoms, such as excessive and pervasive worry, physiological arousal, and avoidance behavior, may reflect aberrant expression of otherwise normative defensive responses, and therefore follow the same imminence-based organization. Here, empirical evidence linking aberrant expression of specific, imminence-dependent defensive responding to distinct anxiety symptoms is reviewed, and plausible contributing neural circuitry is highlighted. Drawing from translational and clinical research, the proposed framework informs our understanding of pathological anxiety by grounding anxiety symptoms in conserved psychobiological mechanisms. Potential implications for research and treatment are discussed.

Bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in freshwater pearl mussels Hyriopsis cumingii in Poyang Lake

Thirty-five PPCPs were measured in representative freshwater pearl mussels (Hyriopsis cumingii) in Poyang Lake, the largest lake of China, as well as their responses to sedimentary PPCPs. We observed 32 PPCPs in soft tissues of mussels at a total concentration of 2721.5 ± 929.3 ng·g-1 dry weight (dw), much higher than those in sediments (21 PPCPs, 273.2 ± 89.4 ng·g-1 dw). Anti-inflammatories were the primary contaminants detected in both sediments and mussels. PPCP concentrations in mussels exhibited significant organ-specific characteristics, and gonads were identified as a hotspot for these contaminants. Correlation analysis showed that gonads were more likely to assimilate triclosan from sediments. Biochemical analysis revealed a higher physiological sensitivity of glutathione synthesis in gonads to sedimentary PPCPs, suggesting the long-term oxidative damage. Our findings highlight the concern on the potential effects of sedimentary PPCPs to propagation of mussels, and emphasize the necessity to formulate strategies for sedimentary PPCPs control targeting a healthy lake.

Integrated physiological, metabolite and proteomic analysis reveal the glyphosate stress response mechanism in tea plant (Camellia sinensis)

Glyphosate residues can tremendously impact the physiological mechanisms of tea plants, thus threatening tea security and human health. Herein, integrated physiological, metabolite, and proteomic analyses were performed to reveal the glyphosate stress response mechanism in tea plant. After exposure to glyphosate (≥1.25 kg ae/ha), the leaf ultrastructure was damaged, and chlorophyll content and relative fluorescence intensity decreased significantly. The characteristic metabolites catechins and theanine decreased significantly, and the 18 volatile compounds content varied significantly under glyphosate treatments. Subsequently, tandem mass tags (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics was employed to identify the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and to validate their biological functions at the proteome level. A total of 6287 proteins were identified and 326 DEPs were screened. These DEPs were mainly catalytic, binding, transporter and antioxidant active proteins, involved in photosynthesis and chlorophyll biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis, sugar and energy metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and stress/defense/detoxification pathway, etc. A total of 22 DEPs were validated by parallel reaction monitoring (PRM), demonstrating that the protein abundances were consistent between TMT and PRM data. These findings contribute to our understanding of the damage of glyphosate to tea leaves and molecular mechanism underlying the response of tea plants to glyphosate.

Settleable atmospheric particulate matter affects the swimming performance and aerobic metabolic rate of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Atmospheric particulate matter (APM) produced by the steel industry comprises a complex mixture of particles that includes a wide variety of metals and metallic nanoparticles. These particles settle out onto areas surrounding the industries. There is evidence that this 'settleable' APM (SePM) may cause air-to-water cross-contamination with significant effects on aquatic biota. Recent investigations have reported sublethal impacts on the gill structure and blood oxygen-carrying capacity of fishes, which raises the hypothesis that there will be consequences for gas exchange capacity and ability to support aerobic activities. Therefore, we investigated the effects of an environmentally relevant level of SePM contamination on swimming performance and associated aerobic metabolic rates in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Short-term exposure (96 h) to SePM reduced critical swimming speed, energetic efficiency of aerobic swimming, standard metabolic rate, maximum metabolic rate, and aerobic scope. The compromised swimming performance could have adverse ecological effects by limiting foraging ability, predator evasion, territorial protection, and migration. The impairments to aerobic capacity could also affect overall fish performance by influencing long-term energy balance and allocation to growth and reproduction. Thus, despite being sublethal, SePM contamination is considerably debilitating, and if its limiting effects are not compensated for in the longer term, this may reduce the survival and fitness of fish populations.

Nickel (Ni) phytotoxicity and detoxification mechanisms: A review

Scientists studying the environment, physiology, and biology have been particularly interested in nickel (Ni) because of its dual effects (essentiality and toxicity) on terrestrial biota. It has been reported in some studies that without an adequate supply of Ni, plants are unable to finish their life cycle. The safest Ni limit for plants is 1.5 μg g^-1, while the limit for soil is between 75 and 150 μg g^-1. Ni at lethal levels harms plants by interfering with a variety of physiological functions, including enzyme activity, root development, photosynthesis, and mineral uptake. This review focuses on the occurrence and phytotoxicity of Ni with respect to growth, physiological and biochemical aspects. It also delves into advanced Ni detoxification mechanisms such as cellular modifications, organic acids, and chelation of Ni by plant roots, and emphasizes the role of genes involved in Ni detoxification. The discussion has been carried out on the current state of using soil amendments and plant-microbe interactions to successfully remediate Ni from contaminated sites. This review has identified potential drawbacks and difficulties of various strategies for Ni remediation, discussed the importance of these findings for environmental authorities and decision-makers, and concluded by noting the sustainability concerns and future research needs regarding Ni remediation.

Transcriptomic analysis of the effect of deferoxamine exposure on the growth, photosynthetic activity and iron transfer of Microcystis aeruginosa

Deferoxamine (DFB) is a trihydroxamic acid siderophore that chelates with iron (Fe) to form iron-siderophore complexes. The existence of siderophores in nature changes the form of iron and affects the absorption and utilization of iron by organisms. However, the relationship between siderophores and the growth of Cyanobacteria is largely unknown. In this study, the cellular and transcriptomic responses to the addition of DFB were investigated. A high concentration of DFB (12 mg/L) significantly inhibited the growth of Cyanobacteria cells, reduced photosynthetic activity, and induced the production of peroxidase, with the highest inhibition rate of algal growth of 74.82%. These indexes were also affected for the low (3 mg/L) and medium concentration (6 mg/L) groups, but this difference is closely related to the growth stage of Cyanobacteria cells. This may be due to competition between the cell-associated iron-binding part/system and the extracellular Fe (Ⅲ)-DFB ligand. Transcriptome results showed that most of the genes involved in iron uptake and transport were down-regulated, and only the fur gene encoding the iron uptake regulator protein was significantly up-regulated. Most genes related to photosynthesis, glycolysis, and fatty acid metabolism were also down-regulated, while the obvious up-regulation of a few genes may be a complex regulation in response to the down-regulation of most genes. These findings will provide important insights into the effects of siderophores on iron bioavailability in algae.

Integrated physiological and metabolomic analysis reveals new insights into toxicity pathways of paraquat to Microcystis aeruginosa

Chemical pollutants, such as herbicides, released into the aquatic environment adversely affect the phytoplankton community structure. While majority of herbicides are specifically designed to target photosynthetic processes, they also can be toxic to phytoplankton; however, despite the photosynthetic toxicity, some herbicides can target multiple physiological processes. Therefore, a full picture of toxicity pathway of herbicide to phytoplankton is necessary. In the present study, the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa was exposed to two levels (17 μg L^-1 (EC₁₀) and 65 μg L^-1 (EC₅₀)) of paraquat for 72 h. The physiological and metabolic responses were analyzed to elucidate the toxicity pathway and establish the adverse outcome pathway of paraquat to M. aeruginosa. The results revealed that enhanced glycolysis (upregulation of pyruvic acid level) and tricarboxylic acid cycle (upregulation of the levels of malic acid, isocitric acid and citric acid) exposed to EC₁₀ level of paraquat, which probably acted as a temporary strategy to maintain a healthy energy status in M. aeruginosa cells. Meanwhile, the expressions of glutathione and benzoic acid were enhanced to scavenge the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, the accumulation of pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoid) might play a supplementary role in the acclimation to EC₁₀ level paraquat treatment. In cells exposed to paraquat by EC₅₀ level, the levels of SOD, CAT, glutathione and benzoic acid increased significantly; however, the ROS exceeded the tolerance level of antioxidant system in M. aeruginosa. The adverse effects were revealed by inhibition of chlorophyll a fluorescence, the decreases in several carbohydrates (e.g., glucose 1-phosphate, fructose and galactose) and total protein content. Consequently, paraquat-induced oxidative stress caused the growth inhibition of M. aeruginosa. These findings provide new insights into the mode of action of paraquat in M. aeruginosa.

Effects of day-of-hatch intramuscular administration of a herbal extract mixture and its re-supplementation in drinking water on growth performance, stress indicators, and antioxidant status of broiler chickens reared under hot summer conditions

Broilers under oxidative stress from high ambient temperatures may benefit from the use of additives that have antioxidant properties. This experiment investigated the efficacy of a herbal extract mixture (HEM; aqueous extracts from Ferula gummosa, Thymus vulgaris, and Trachyspermum copticum) in day-old chicks, injected intramuscular (deep pectoral muscle; (0, 30, 60, and 90 μL/0.1 mL of sterilized and distilled water)), and supplemented in drinking water (0 and 0.25 mL/L) during the rearing period. Broilers were reared in battery cages under summer temperature conditions, with average maximum temperature of 35.5°C, average minimum temperature of 25.5°C, and average relative humidity of 50-60%. A total of 400 1-day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 8 treatment groups (5 replicates/treatment with 10 birds per replicate). From d1 to d10, the indoor air temperature was adjusted to match fluctuating outdoor summer temperatures, and was set at 30-34°C and 50-60% relative humidity; and from d10 onwards, no adjustments were made. Injection of HEM linearly decreased feed:gain (P = 0.005), heterophile-to-lymphocyte (H/L) ratio (P = 0.007), and serum concentrations of cholesterol (P = 0.008), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) (P < 0.001), malondialdehyde (P = 0.005), and cortisol (P = 0.008). The 60 μL of HEM injection produced the best results in terms of final body weight (BW; P = 0.003), overall average daily gain (ADG; P = 0.002), European performance index (P < 0.001), carcass yield (P < 0.001), and serum glutathione peroxidase activity (P < 0.001). Supplementation of HEM in drinking water also increased final BW (P = 0.048), overall ADG (P = 0.047), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.042), and total antioxidant capacity (P = 0.030), while decreasing the H/L ratio (P = 0.004) and serum LDL concentration (P = 0.031). There were interactions between injection and water supplementation for BW (day 24; P = 0.045), carcass yield (day 42; P = 0.014), and serum superoxide dismutase activity (day 42; P = 0.004). In conclusion, administering an injection of HEM at a dose of 60 μL at the time of hatching, followed by supplementation at a dose of 0.25 mL/L via drinking water during the rearing period could be a useful strategy for improving the performance and health status of heat-stressed broiler chickens.

Evaluation of inducing activity of CIP elicitors from diverse sources based on monosaccharide composition and physiological indicators

Application of elicitors can greatly enhance plant immune resistance against pathogens. However, it is still obscure whether elicitor activity is influenced by diverse sources. This study investigated the effect of foliar spraying of 19 batches of Chrysanthemum indicum polysaccharides (CIPs) on the disease resistance of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (A. macrocephala) and explored the main reasons for the differences of inducing activity of CIP elicitors. PCA, OPLS-DA, grey relational analysis and entropy weight method had good predictability for the activity evaluation of CIP elicitors and other plant-derived elicitors. The results showed that 19 batches of CIPs had definite regional differences in inducing activity and monosaccharide content. CIP elicitors with high inducing activity could significantly increase the accumulation of Atractylenolide Ⅱ and Atractylenolide Ⅲ, the mRNA relative transcription level of CAT, POD, PAL genes, the amount of pH change in the medium and effectively reduce the disease index of A. macrocephala. Furthermore, CIP with high inducing activity exhibited the high contents of Rha, Ara and GalA, which might be the main contributor to their high activity. The evaluation procedure developed in this work can be applied for screening CIP elicitors with high inducing activity, and it lays a foundation for identifying more functional elicitors related to plant immune resistance.

Contributions of ectomycorrhizal fungi in a reclaimed poplar forest (Populus yunnanensis) in an abandoned metal mine tailings pond, southwest China

Reclamation using fast-growing trees has great potential for agroforestry development on former non-ferrous metal mining areas. However, the functional traits of ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMF) and the relationship between ECMF and reclaimed trees remain unknown. Here, the restoration of ECMF and their functions in reclaimed poplar (Populus yunnanensis) growing in a derelict metal mine tailings pond were investigated. We identified ECMF belonging to 15 genera in 8 families, suggesting the occurrence of spontaneous diversification as poplar reclamation progressed. We described a previously unknown ectomycorrhizal relationship between poplar roots and Bovista limosa. Our results showed that B. limosa PY5 alleviated the phytotoxicity of Cd and enhanced poplar heavy metal tolerance, resulting in increased plant growth due to reduced Cd accumulation in host tissues. As part of the improved metal tolerance mechanism, PY5 colonization activated antioxidant systems, enhanced the conversion of Cd into inactive chemical forms, and promoted the compartmentalization of Cd into host cell walls. These results suggest that introducing adaptative ECMF may be an alternative to bioaugmenting reforestation and phytomanagement programs of fast-growing native trees in the barren metal mining and smelting areas.

Physiological and molecular responses to hypoxia stress in Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum

Hypoxia has become one of the major environmental problems in the aquaculture industry. As one of the most commercially important bivalves, Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum may be suffering substantial mortality attributable to hypoxia. The physiological and molecular responses to hypoxia stress in Manila clam were evaluated at two levels of low dissolved oxygen: 0.5 mg/L (DO 0.5 mg/L) and 2.0 mg/L (DO 2.0 mg/L). With the prolongation of hypoxia stress, the mortality rate was 100% at 156 h under DO 0.5 mg/L. In contrast, 50% of clams survived after 240 h of stress at DO 2.0 mg/L. After the hypoxia stress, some severe structural damages were observed in gill, axe foot, hepatopancreas tissues, such as cell rupture and mitochondrial vacuolization. For the hypoxia-stressed clams, the significant rise and decline of enzyme activity (LDH and T-AOC) was observed in gills, in contrast to the reduction of glycogen content. Furthermore, the expression levels of genes related to energy metabolism (SDH, PK, Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase, NF-κB and HIF-1α) was significantly affected by the hypoxia stress. It is therefore suggested that the short-term survival of clams under hypoxia may be dependent on stress protection by antioxidants, energy allocation, and tissue energy reserves (such as glycogen stores). Despite this, the prolongation of hypoxia stress at DO 2.0 mg/L may cause the irreversible damages of cellular structures in clam tissues, eventually leading to the death of clams. We therefore support the hypothesis that the extent of hypoxia impacts on marine bivalves may be underestimated in the coastal areas.

Physiological responses of Ampithoe valida and its feeding potential on Ulva prolifera

Large numbers of Amphipoda feed on floating green tide macroalgae in the Yellow Sea, among which Ampithoe valida has a high abundance in the stable and decline periods. Amphipoda preferentially feed on Ulva. Under different temperatures, salinities, and pH, the physiological responses of A. valida and its feeding potential on Ulva prolifera were investigated, along with its physiological responses during green tide blooms in the Southern Yellow Sea. Ampithoe valida could survive within a temperature range of 5-30 °C, salinity of 5-40, and pH of 4-10. Optimal environmental conditions for growth were temperature 15-25 °C, salinity 10-40, and pH 6-10. At temperatures of 5-30 °C, salinities of 5-35, and pH of 4-9, A. valida could effectively reduce U. prolifera biomass. The feeding ability of A. valida was greatest in 25-30 °C, 10-25 salinity, and neutral seawater, exceeding 5 mg·ind.^-1·d^-1. During green tide outbreaks in the Southern Yellow Sea from May to August, the monthly average sea surface temperature, salinity, and pH range is 17.5-27.3 °C, 23.8-29.6, and 7.87-8.17, respectively, within which A. valida showed well growth and could effectively reduce U. prolifera biomass. Finally, this study further discussed the possibility of A. valida as a biological method to control green tide.

Human thermal physiological response of wearing personal protective equipment: An educational building semi-open space experimental investigation

With the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, HCWs are frequently required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for nucleic acid sample collection in semi-open transition spaces. Wearing PPE causes significant psychological and physical stress in HCWs. In this study, operative temperature (T_op) and wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) were used to assess thermal conditions through field experiments, while multiple physiological parameters were measured in the subjects. The results indicated that the subjects showed statistically significant differences in thermal perception and physiological parameters with and without PPE. Using observed increases in heart rate (HR), auditory canal temperature (T_ac), mean skin temperature (MST), and end-tidal CO₂ pressure, subjects were shown to have an increased metabolic rate and heat storage while wearing PPE. Additionally, a decrease in oxygen concentration was also observed, and this decrease may be linked to fatigue and cognitive impairment. Moreover, HR, MST, and T_ac showed a significant linear relationship, which increased with temperature and operative temperature, and the HR response was stronger with PPE than without PPE. The neutral, preferred, and acceptable temperatures were significantly lower with PPE than without PPE, and the deviations for neutral T_op/WBGT were 9.5/7.1 °C and preferred T_op/WBGT was 2.2/4.0 °C, respectively. Moreover, the upper limits of acceptable WBGT, 29.4 °C with PPE and 20.4 °C without PPE, differed significantly between the two phases. Furthermore, the recorded physiological parameter responses and thermal perception responses of the subjects while wearing PPE indicated that they were at risk of thermal stress. Overall, these results suggest that people who wear PPE should focus on their health and thermal stress. This study provides a reference for the development of strategies to counteract heat stress and improve thermal comfort.

Physiological arousal guides situational appraisals and metacognitive recall for naturalistic experiences

As individuals navigate the world, they are bound to have emotionally intense experiences. These events not only influence momentary physiological and affective responses, but may also have a powerful impact on one's memory for their emotional experience. In this research, we used the naturalistic context of a haunted house to examine how physiological arousal is associated with metacognitive emotional memory (i.e., the extent to which an individual remembers having experienced a certain emotion). Participants first navigated the haunted house while heart rate and explicit situational appraisals were recorded, and then recalled specific events from the haunted house and the intensity of these affective events approximately one week later. We found that heart rate predicted both the intensity of reported scariness in the haunted house and meta-cognitive memory of affect during recall. Critically, we found evidence for malleability in metacognitive emotional memory based on how the event was initially labeled. Individuals tended to recall events that they explicitly labeled as fear-evoking as being more intense than they reported at the time of the event. We found the opposite relationship for events that they labeled as not fear-evoking. Taken together, this indicates that there are strong relationships between physiological arousal and emotional experiences in naturalistic contexts, but that affective labeling can modulate the relationship between these features when reflecting on the emotionality of that experience in memory.

Assessment of metal contamination in an urbanized estuary (Atlantic Ocean) using crabs as biomonitors: A multiple biomarker approach

Estuarine environments, which are complex and sensitive coastal system, and are the final receptacle of several human wastes. Consequently, biomonitoring contaminants, such as metals, within these environments and developing scientific-based tools to conserve them have become particularly importat in recent years. Therefore, in the present study, we determined the levels of certain metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cr and Fe) both in sediments and in a key ecological benthic species, the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata, in sites of the Bahía Blanca estuary (SW Atlantic Ocean) with different anthropogenic impacts. We combined these records with geochemical indices and enzymatic and non-enzymatic biochemical biomarkers as early warning signals of contamination and damage to establish an integrated metal contamination profile. Our results indicated that some metals like Cu moderately contaminate the estuary and that the primary input of metals in this area is due to malfunctioning sewage discharges. Crabs exhibited the following pattern of metal accumulation: Fe ≥ Cu > Zn > Mn > Ni > Cd. Pb and Cr were under the method detection limit, and Cu was probably bioaccumulated from sediments. Metal concentrations showed significant differences according to the sites and seasons (p > 0.05) and not strictly to the crab gender. Besides, a similar pattern was observed for biomarkers, and the integrated biomarker response allowed establishing different oxidative stress patterns, according not only to human impacts but also to the seasonal physiological needs of this species and environmental endpoints (salinity, temperature, and pH). This work demonstrates that environmental factors also affect the metal influx in crabs and the activity of biomarkers beyond the source and fate of these elements. This information is vital for future integrated monitoring programs.

Green plants in urban environments experience cyclical particulate matter stress. And this history of exhaust exposure may generate stress memory in plants, which may alter their subsequent response. Studies combining urban pollution characteristics and stress memory are limited. Therefore, we selected E. japonicus var. aurea-marginatus, a common urban greening tree species in the Yangtze River Delta, and conducted an experiment in three periods: the initial pollution period (S1: 28 days), the recovery period (R: 14 days) and the secondary pollution period (S2: 28 days). The experimental design consisted of an elevated pollution treatment (173 μg•cm^-3) and an ambient control (34 μg•cm^-3) with three replicates. In S2, the net total particle retention and saturated particle retention decreased by 11.5% and 19.3%, respectively, while PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 did not change significantly. E. japonicus var. aurea-marginatus exhibited recovery of chlorophyll levels, slower degradation of carotenoid, faster accumulation of ASA, lower accumulation of MDA, reduced activity of SOD under the second pollution period, and the period had a significant effect on the physiological indicators. Collectively, the effect of autoexhaust exposure history on the particle retention capacity of selected plant varied across particle sizes, and stress memory may confer plant resistance to recurrent exhaust pollution via combined regulations of physiological responses. Fine particles which pose a great risk to human health arise predominantly from vehicular traffic and energy production. So, E. japonicus tends to play a stabilising role in particle retention in industrial, traffic and residential areas.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of two different formats of small-sided games (SSGs; 2 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 3) on physiological parameters in youth volleyball players. Twelve youth volleyball players (17.2 ± 7.44 years, 1.89 ± 0.6 m, 72.83 ± 8.57 kg) completed three different games formats (regular game (RG): 6 vs. 6, SSG3: 3 vs. 3 and SSG2: 2 vs. 2). associated with two pitch dimensions (i.e., 2 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 3 on 18 × 4.5 m; 6 vs. 6 on 18 × 9 m). Each player performed 4 × 5 min SSG with a recovery period of 1 min between bouts. All players were members of the same youth team and played in a professional league. They had at least 6 years of volleyball training and no current injuries. This study was carried out during the competitive period. Heart rate (HR), blood lactate ([La^-]), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured. Compared to RG, physiological (i.e., HR and [La^-]) and RPE responses were significantly higher during SSG3 and SSG2 (all p < 0.05; ƞ_p ² = 0.77, ƞ_p ² = 0.65, ƞ_p ² = 0.30, respectively). Moreover, HR and RPE were significantly higher in SSG2 compared to SSG3. In contrast, no significant differences were observed in [La^-] between SSG2 and SSG3. These results suggest that the number of players influences the exercise intensity in small-sided volleyball games in youth players. Therefore, coaches could benefit from incorporating SSGs to manipulate the exercise intensity in youth volleyball players.

Role of exogenous abscisic acid in freezing tolerance of mangrove Kandelia obovata under natural frost condition at near 32°N

BACKGROUND

Mangroves possess substantial ecological, social, and economic functions in tropical and subtropical coastal wetlands. Kandelia obovata is the most cold-resistance species among mangrove plants, with a widespread distribution in China that ranges from Sanya (18° 12' N) to Wenzhou (28° 20' N). Here, we explored the temporal variations in physiological status and transcriptome profiling of K. obovata under natural frost conditions at ~ 32^oN, as well as the positive role of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) in cold resistance.

RESULTS

The soluble sugar (SS) and proline (Pro) functioned under freezing stress, of which SS was more important for K. obovata. Consistently, up-regulated DEGs responding to low temperature were significantly annotated to glycometabolism, such as starch and sucrose metabolism and amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism. Notably, the top 2 pathways of KEGG enrichment were phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and flavonoid biosynthesis. For the antioxidant system, POD in conjunction with CAT removed hydrogen peroxide, and CAT appeared to be more important. The up-regulated DEGs responding to low temperature and ABA were also found to be enriched in arginine and proline metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, and peroxisome. Moreover, ABA triggered the expression of P5CS and P5CR, but inhibited the ProDH expression, which might contribute to Pro accumulation. Interestingly, there was no significant change in malondialdehyde (MDA) content during the cold event (P > 0.05), suggesting foliar application of ABA effectively alleviated the adverse effects of freezing stress on K. obovata by activating the antioxidant enzyme activity and increasing osmolytes accumulation, such as Pro, and the outcome was proportional to ABA concentration.

CONCLUSIONS

This study deepened our understanding of the physiological characters and molecular mechanisms underlying the response of K. obovata to natural frost conditions and exogenous ABA at the field level, which could provide a sound theoretical foundation for expanding mangroves plantations in higher latitudes, as well as the development coastal landscape.

Human thermal sensation algorithm modelization via physiological thermoregulatory responses based on dynamic thermal environment tests on males

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Thermal conditions are changeable in cabin space, where occupants could suffer consecutive self-thermoregulation to such changing thermal stresses. Thermal environment management is expected to be purposefully auto-adjustable for the environment by recognizing individual real-time thermal sensations. Current thermal sensation evaluation models are developed for virtual simulations rather than for realistic scenarios, challenging to evaluate human thermal sensation in the field surveys.

METHODS

The study constructs a human thermal sensation model via human physiological responses to evaluate the human thermal sensation in the actual vehicle environment. The thermal sensation model forms with exponential functions to clarify the relationship between thermal sensation and pulse rate and blood pressure, which successfully expresses the approximately linear trend around neutral sensation and compensates for the end-points bias. The study set up experimental cases to determine the parameter states in the thermal sensation model. Firstly, subjective thermal sensation scoring was performed by combing with an established seven-point-scale questionnaire survey system for human thermal sensation. Wearable sensors are then applied to measure the human physiological response, including blood pressure BP, pulse rate PR and blood oxygen saturation SpO₂.

RESULTS

The subjects revealed significantly higher pulse rates (positively correlated) and lower blood pressure (negatively correlated) in the warm chamber than in the cool chamber. The defined parameter change rate effectively reveals the trend of human thermal sensation and avoids the inconsistency of raw physiological response levels. The change rate in PR and MAP between the thermal sensation in cold -3 and hot +3 is about a 10% difference.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the thermal sensation model algorithm, model parameters were fitted by the subjects' thermal sensation voting and the change rate of their physiological responses. With the coefficient of determination (R²) of the regression over 0.8, the proposed thermal sensation model can be employed for human thermal sensation evaluation. The physiological thermoregulatory responses effectively indicate the thermal state of the human body and can be used in thermal environments in conjunction with human smart wearable devices.

Assessing the impact of atmospheric heatwaves on intertidal clams

Heatwaves have become more frequent and intense in the last two decades, resulting in detrimental effects on marine bivalves and ecosystems they sustain. Intertidal clams inhabit the most physiologically challenging habitats in coastal areas and live already near their thermal tolerance limits. However, whether and to what extent atmospheric heatwaves affect intertidal bivalves remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated physiological responses of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, to heatwaves at air temperature regimes of 40 °C and 50 °C occurring frequently and occasionally at the present day in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. With the increasing intensity of heatwaves and following only two days of aerial exposure, Manila clams suffered 100 % mortality at 50 °C, indicating that they succumb to near future heatwaves, although they survived under various scenarios of moderate heatwaves. The latter is couched in energetic terms across levels of biological organization. Specifically, Manila clams acutely exposed to heatwaves enhanced their standard metabolic rate to fuel essential physiological maintenance, such as increasing activities of SOD, CAT, MDA, and AKP, and expression of HSP70. These strategies occur likely at the expense of fitness-related functions, as best exemplified by significant depressions in activities of enzymes (NKA, CMA, and T-ATP) and expression levels of genes (PT, KHK, CA, CAS, TYR, TNF-BP, and OSER). When heatwaves occurred again, Manila clams can respond and acclimate to thermal stress by implementing a suite of more ATP-efficient and less energy-costly compensatory mechanisms at various levels of biological organization. It is consequently becoming imperative to uncover underlying mechanisms responsible for such positive response and rapid acclimation to recurrent heatwaves.

Antagonistic and synergistic effects of warming and microplastics on microalgae: Case study of the red tide species Prorocentrum donghaiense

Bibliometric network analysis has revealed that the widespread distribution of microplastics (MPs) has detrimental effects on marine organisms; however, the combined effects of MPs and climate change (e.g., warming) is not well understood. In this study, Prorocentrum donghaiense, a typical red tide species in the East China Sea, was exposed to different MP concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg L^-1) and temperatures (16, 22, and 28 °C) for 7 days to investigate the combined effects of MPs and simulated ocean warming by measuring different physiological parameters, such as cell growth, pigment contents (chlorophyll a and carotenoid), relative electron transfer rate (rETR), reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The results demonstrated that MPs significantly decreased cell growth, pigment contents, and rETR_max, but increased the MDA, ROS, and SOD levels for all MP treatments at low temperature (16 °C). However, high temperatures (22 and 28 °C) increased the pigment contents and rETR_max, but decreased the SOD and MDA levels. Positive and negative effects of high temperatures (22 or 28 °C) were observed at low (1 and 5 mg L^-1) and high MP (10 mg L^-1) concentrations, respectively, indicating the antagonistic and synergistic effects of combined warming and MP pollution. These results imply that the effects of MPs on microalgae will likely not be substantial in future warming scenarios if MP concentrations are controlled at a certain level. These findings expand the current knowledge of microalgae in response to increasing MP pollution in future warming scenarios.

Morphological and physiological responses of Dianthus spiculifolius high wax mutant to low-temperature stress

Cuticular wax plays a role in plant responses to environmental stresses. To understand the contribution of cuticular wax to plant responses to low-temperature stress, the morphological and physiological responses of a Dianthus spiculifolius high-wax (HW) mutant and wild type (WT) were compared. Under low-temperature stress (0 and -10 °C), HW plants showed a lower mortality rate and electrolyte leakage (El) than that WT plants. In plants treated with low-temperature stress (0 and -10 °C), HW mutant leaves exhibited higher soluble sugar and free proline contents and lower malondialdehyde contents than those WT leaves. The photosynthetic capacity, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II in HW mutant leaves were the least inhibited by low temperature than those in WT leaves. The dewaxing experiments showed no significant difference in the phenotype and El between the dewaxed-treated HW mutant and WT leaves under low-temperatures stress, indicating that cuticular wax causes differences in resistance to low-temperatures between HW and WT. Principal component analysis and the membership function value of the physiological data showed that the average membership value of the HW mutant was greater than that in WT. In general, the results indicated that high cuticular wax contributes positively to the response to low-temperature stress by D. spiculifolius.

Settleable atmospheric particulate matter affects cardiorespiratory responses to hypoxia in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Atmospheric particulate matter (APM) emitted by iron ore processing industries has a complex composition, including diverse metallic particles and nanoparticles. Settleable APM (SePM) causes air to water cross-contamination and has recently been demonstrated to have harmful sublethal impacts on fish, eliciting stress responses, affecting the immune system, and reducing blood oxygen-carrying capacity. These findings imply potential consequences for fish aerobic performance and energy allocation, particularly in their ability to tolerate respiratory challenges such as aquatic hypoxia. To assess that potential limitation, we analyzed metabolic, cardiorespiratory, and morphological alterations after exposing tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, to an environmentally relevant concentration of SePM (96 h) and progressive hypoxia. The contamination initiated detectable gill damage, reducing respiratory efficiency, increasing ventilatory effort, and compromising fish capacity to deal with hypoxia. Even in normoxia, the resting respiratory frequency was elevated and limited respiratory adjustments during hypoxia. SePM increased O₂crit from 26 to 34% of O₂ (1.84 to 2.76 mg O₂·L^-1). Such ventilatory inefficacy implies higher ventilatory cost with relevant alterations in energy allocation. Progression in gill damage might be problematic and cause: infection, blood loss, ion imbalance, and limited cardiorespiratory performance. The contamination did not cause immediate lethality but may threaten fish populations due to limitations in physiological performance. This was the first investigation to evaluate the physiological responses of fish to hypoxia after SePM contamination. We suggest that the present level of environmental SePM deserves attention. The present results demonstrate the need for comprehensive studies on SePM effects in aquatic fauna.

Settleable atmospheric particulate matter induces stress and affects the oxygen-carrying capacity and innate immunity in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Steel industry emissions of atmospheric particulate matter are responsible for air to water cross-contamination, which deposits metal/metalloid contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. This source of contamination has not been considered in most of the environmental monitoring protocols. Settleable atmospheric particulate matter (SePM) collected in an area of steel industry influence was used to analyze the sublethal effects on the hematological and innate immunological variables in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after short-term exposure (96 h). Blood samples were analyzed to evaluate the oxygen-carrying transport capacity, innate immune activity and stress biomarkers after exposure to ecologically relevant concentration of SePM. The exposure reduced blood oxygen-carrying capacity by lessening hematocrit, hemoglobin, erythrocyte, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. Compensatory increments in mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin have also been observed. The contaminant impacted the immune system by reducing the number of leukocytes, thrombocytes, and monocytes, total plasma protein, leukocyte respiratory activity, and by increasing lysozyme concentration. Furthermore, the contaminant caused endocrine stress response, raising plasma cortisol and glucose. Therefore, the alterations caused by SePM threatened the capacity of sustaining aerobic metabolism, impaired the immune system, and changed the energy allocation due to both stress response and immune effect. This may have important implications for the impact of SePM on aquatic ecosystems. Future investigations should assess SePM impact on general physiology and aerobic performance, especially to face common ecological challenges such as hypoxia and sustained swimming. These results point out the need to develop proper protocols to address the air-to-water cross-contamination risks by iron ore processing industries.

Chronic exposure to tralopyril induced abnormal growth and calcium regulation of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)

Tralopyril is an emerging marine antifouling agent with limited data on its effects on fish growth and calcium regulation. To determine the changes induced by long-term exposure to tralopyril, multi-levels (such as molecular, biochemical, and individual levels) responses were measured in turbot at different concentrations (1 μg/L, 20 μg/L). The results showed that 1 μg/L mainly affected the immune response, while 20 μg/L affected the synthesis and metabolism of steroids and fat. However, different concentrations of tralopyril affected the synthesis, secretion and action of parathyroid hormone and growth hormone. The expression of GH/IGF axis gene and the level of growth hormone increased significantly, leading to abnormal growth. The energy tradeoff between immunity and growth at 1 μg/L tralopyril pressure may inhibit growth. The change of Ca²⁺ level was accompanied by the disturbance of PTH-related gene expression. The results of molecular docking showed that the disturbance of Ca²⁺ regulation might be attributed to the inhibition of vitamin D receptor by tralopyril, which affected the vitamin D signaling pathway. This study provides scientific data for the in-depth understanding and risk assessment of the toxicological effects of tralopyril and reveals the potential threat of tralopyril to environmental health.
