Abstract
A fatty acid imidazoline-based inhibitor was synthesized via a facile solvent-free synthesis method between tall oil fatty acid (TOFA) and diethylenetriamine (DETA) under atmospheric conditions with a short reaction time. The as-synthesized imidazoline (S-Imd) acted as an effective inhibitor for reducing or preventing corrosion of carbon steel pipelines at both bottom of the line (BOL) and top of the line (TOL) positions under simulated conditions of a gas pipeline in a CO2-saturated environment. The inhibition efficacy was examined by both weight loss and electrochemical measurements, such as the electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and linear polarization resistance (LPR). The results revealed that the S-Imd, 2-(8-heptadecenyl)-2-imidazoline-1-ethanamin, at 300 ppm exhibited a superior inhibition efficiency of up to 91.6 and 89.9% for BOL and TOL corrosion tests, respectively. The surface morphology of the carbon steel test specimens was also examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), and contact angle analysis. It was found that the as-synthesized S-Imd acted as a mixed-type inhibitor that exhibited a decreased surface roughness and oxide layer on carbon steel surfaces. However, the water contact angle was found to increase, implying enhanced hydrophobicity of the surface. Adsorption of the imidazoline molecules on carbon steel surfaces followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The present work provides very promising results in the synthesis and utilization of the studied imidazoline as a volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI), especially for carbon steel pipelines in petroleum industries.

Abstract
In the present study, the inhibition performance of some medicinal plants (i.e. Yarrow, Wormwood, Maurorum, Marjoram, and Ribes rubrum) was theoretically and experimentally investigated for mild steel immersed in 1M HCl. In this way, the obtained extracts characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and the electrochemical and theoretical techniques were used to study the inhibition mechanisms of the extracts for the immersed electrode in the acidic solution. In addition, the microstructure of the electrode surface immersed in the blank and inhibitor-containing solutions characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Violet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy was used to confirm the adsorption of the compounds on the electrode surface. The obtained electrochemical results revealed that the inhibition performance of the green inhibitors increased by increasing their dosage in the electrolyte. In addition, it was proved that Marjoram plant extract possessed the most inhibition efficiency (up to 92%) among the under-studied herbal extracts. Marjoram extract behaved as a mixed-type inhibitor in the hydrochloric acid solution, and the adsorption process of the extract on the steel surface followed the Langmuir adsorption model. Adsorption of the compounds on the steel surface was also studied using density functional theory (DFT), and it was found that the protonated organic compounds in the extract have a high affinity for adsorption on the electrode surface in the acidic solution.

Abstract
Corrosion constitutes a significant issue in industries that handle metals. Corrosion inhibitors with a low impact on the environment provide a significant economic benefit in various engineering applications. In this work, the effectiveness of olive leaves extract is evaluated as a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion of carbon steel in different concentrations of hydrochloric acid (0.1, 1.0, and 2.0 M) when protected by an aqueous solution of olive leaf extract of concentrations ranging from 10 to 60 ppm is investigated. A green extraction process based upon water extraction is used to ensure minimum impact on the environment. Results show that the corrosion inhibition efficiency increased as the concentration of the olive leaf extract increased. An analysis of variance showed a significant effect of acidic molarity, temperature, and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion rate. A significant statistical model indicates that the inhibitor exhibits higher efficiencies at higher acidic molarity. Results of SEM and EDX also demonstrated that a protective film of the inhibitor on the specimen surface plays a role in corrosion inhibition, suggesting that the inhibitor molecules are adsorbed at the interface between the carbon steel and the acid solution. The study provides an insight on the corrosion mechanism and highlights the potential of olive oil extract as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract
The potentiality of the 6-mercaptopurine (MP) and 6-thioguanine (TG) expired drugs toward the corrosion inhibition of the aluminium (Al) (111) surface was widely investigated using a series of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A competition between the anti-corrosive features of the studied drugs in the gas and aqueous phases was conducted on both neutral and protonated forms by means of quantum mechanical descriptors. The results of the electrostatic potential analysis demonstrated the prominent nucleophilic nature of the sulfur and nitrogen atoms over the structures of the examined drugs. The frontier molecular orbital theory findings outlined the higher preferability of TG over MP as a corrosion inhibitor. Upon determining the most beneficial configurations of the MP/TG⋯Al (111) complexes, first-principles molecular dynamics simulations were executed. Interestingly, the competence of the TG drug in the corrosion inhibition process of Al (111) was more extensive than that of the MP one, which was confirmed by the interaction energy values of -1.79 and -1.64 eV, respectively. Upon obtaining the relaxed complexes, the effect of the presence of water solvent on the adsorption process was studied. These findings provide a foundation for developing green anti-corrosive inhibitors for the aluminium surface.

Abstract
In this study, Clitoria ternatea (CT) was incorporated into the structure of sodium montmorillonite (Na+-MMT), then these new nanoparticles (CT-MMT) were added to sol-gel-based hybrid silanol coatings (SGC). The results of the CT-MMT investigation using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) confirmed the presence of CT in the structure. The results of polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests showed that the presence of CT-MMT in the matrix improves corrosion resistance. The EIS results showed that the coating resistance (Rf) of the sample containing 3 wt.% CT-MMT after immersion was 687 Ω·cm2, while this value was 218 Ω·cm2 for pure coating. CT and MMT compounds improve corrosion resistance by blocking anodic and cathodic regions, respectively. Additionally, the presence of CT in the structure created antimicrobial properties. CT contains phenolic compounds that have the ability to suppress by membrane perturbation, reduction of host ligands adhesion, and neutralizing bacterial toxins. Therefore, CT-MMT showed inhibitory effects and killing of Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive bacteria) and Salmonella paratyphi-A serotype (gram-negative bacteria), and also improved corrosion resistance.

Abstract
Utilizing green corrosion inhibitors has been classified among the most efficient and economical mitigation practices against metallic degradation and failure. This study aims to integrate the features of green and complementary properties of polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) for steel corrosion inhibition. A novel PESA-grafted-PAM (PESAPAM) has been first-ever synthesized in this research study and deployed as a corrosion inhibitor for C-steel in 1.0 M HCl solution. Eco-toxicity prediction confirmed the environmentally friendly properties acquired by the synthesized inhibitor. Electrochemical, kinetics, and surface microscopic studies were carried out to gain a holistic view of C-steel corrosion behavior with the PESAPAM. Furthermore, the performance of PESAPAM was compared with that of the pure PESA under the same testing conditions. Results revealed predominant inhibitive properties of PESAPAM with an inhibition efficiency (IE) reaching 90% at 500 mg·L-1 at 25 °C. Grafting PAM onto the PESA chain showed an overall performance improvement of 109% from IE% of 43 to 90%. Electrochemical measurements revealed a charge transfer-controlled corrosion mechanism and the formation of a thick double layer on the steel surface. The potentiodynamic study classified PESAPAM as a mixed-type inhibitor. Furthermore, the investigation of C-steel corrosion kinetics with the presence of PESAPAM predicted an activation energy of 85 kJ·mol-1, correlated with a physical adsorption behavior. Finally, performed scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analyses confirmed the adsorption of PESA and PESAPAM, with superior coverage of PESAPAM onto the steel surface.

Abstract
A series of novel 1-N-α-d-glucopyranosyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole xanthines was synthesized from azido sugars (glucose, galactose, and lactose) and propargyl xanthines (theophylline and theobromine) using a typical copper (I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The corrosion inhibition activities of these new carbohydrate-xanthine compounds were evaluated by studying the corrosion of API 5 L X70 steel in a 1 M HCl medium. The results showed that, at 10 ppm, a 90% inhibition efficiency was reached by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The inhibitory efficiency of these molecules is explained by means of quantum chemical calculations of the protonated species with the solvent effect, which seems to better represent the actual situation of the experimental conditions. Some quantum chemical parameters were analyzed to characterize the inhibition performance of the tested molecules.

Abstract
The continuous search for eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors due to differences in corrosive media remains an important point in corrosion control. The experimental studies on the corrosion inhibition of urea on mild steel in automotive gas oil (AGO) was conducted using gasometric techniques and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The theoretical approach on the density functional theory (DFT) on the urea molecule was carried out using Gaussian 09 software. The adsorption behavior of urea molecules on the surface of the mild steel was analyzed using Frumkin and Flory-Huggins adsorption isotherms models and Gibb’s free energy, respectively. The result of the experimental study shows a poor corrosion inhibitory effect of urea on mild steel in automobile gas oil (AGO) medium as the inhibition efficiency decreased from 69.30% in week 1 to 12% in week 11 at 200 ppm of inhibitor. The adsorption of urea on the mild steel surface obeys Frumkin’s adsorption isotherm model. Gibb’s free energy of adsorption of urea molecules onto mild steel surface revealed a physisorption mechanism. SEM results showed the non-inhibitive nature of urea on the studied mild steel. Quantum chemical parameters such as HOMO, LUMO, electron affinity, electronegativity, and the fraction of electrons transferred to the metal surface were calculated and interpreted to compare the experimental and theoretical results. The theoretical findings in the current investigation were not in agreement with the experimental result, thereby creating a need for further study using the electrochemical method.

AbstractIn this study, corrosion of thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) rebars with and without 3.5% NaCl for various concentrations (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4%) of green corrosion inhibitors, namely glucosamine and stevioside, was systematically studied in simulated concrete pore solution (SCPS). Open-circuit potential measurements revealed that inhibited system showed passive behaviour compared with control system in SCPS. Potentiodynamic polarization studies revealed that inhibitor stevioside offers more than 88% inhibition efficiency at 0.3% concentration in SCPS containing 3.5% NaCl. Similarly, linear polarization resistance and impedance measurements showed higher polarization resistance and charge transfer resistance values, respectively, at 0.3% concentration for inhibited systems when compared with control (without inhibitor). In the second part, the optimized concentration of glucosamine and stevioside showed better performance against corrosion of rebar in the solution study admixed into concrete. The corrosion of TMT rebar embedded in concrete with and without inhibitors is subjected to simulated marine exposure for a period of 180 days and evaluated the corrosion inhibition. Gravimetric weight loss and electrochemical techniques were employed to study the efficacy of inhibitors in SCPS and concrete medium. It is found that the time taken for corrosion-induced cracking in concrete admixed with stevioside inhibitor is approximately 20 times that of control concrete and that stevioside inhibitor is relatively better corrosion inhibitor than other inhibitor reported.

Abstract
The work provides a computational protocol to predict the anti-corrosive performance of organic molecules through three successive phases of calculations; electron propagator theory (EPT), Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and the density functional based tight-binding (DFTB) method. The protocol was applied to investigate the influence of two structural factors on the anti-corrosive performance of benzo fused-N-heterocycles (BFNHs) against the Fe(110) surface in an acidic medium; positional isomerism and the gradual insertion of nitrogen atoms in the heterocycle ring. The choice of BFNHs is attributed to their anti-corrosion activity and their use as building blocks in the molecular structure of many organic inhibitors. The findings indicate that EPT is a safe method for calculating the quantum chemical descriptors of the isolated molecules. Besides, the current work recommends using MC simulations and the DFTB method to describe the physical and chemical adsorption, respectively. Unexpected results were observed, as the gradual insertion of nitrogen atoms is not a specific factor for improving the inhibition efficiency of BFNHs. The findings were crystallized in equations linking the physical and chemical adsorption energies with the quantum chemical descriptors with a correlation exceeding 0.75. Besides, the peri steric hindrance plays an influential role in chemical adsorption. Intriguingly, the continuous introduction of nitrogen atoms does not increase the efficiency of the inhibitor along the way. For example, phthalazine exhibited better efficiency than benzotetrazine. In light of the above, the present protocol helps understand the anti-corrosive behavior of organic inhibitors and provides a feasible method to develop novel corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract
This study evaluates the corrosion inhibition property of the aqueous and alcoholic leaf extracts of the medicinal plant Ayapana triplinervis. The major components in the extracts are thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether (THQ) and coumarin. It is clear from the weight-loss studies that the water extract of the leaves (AYW) is superior to the alcoholic extract (AYA) in terms of offering corrosion inhibition. The 96% efficiency of 4% (v/v) AYW in 0.5 N HCl at room temperature changes to 84.62% at 323 K. The mixed-type inhibition behaviour of AYW shows slight dominance in the anodic direction. Studies suggest the multilayer adsorption of phytochemicals on the metal surface and that the adsorption follows the Temkin model. Theoretical studies using DFT and BIOVIA Materials Studio investigations establish THQ as a good inhibitor with high adsorption characteristics. Even though the concentration of coumarin in the extract is low, its presence in the extract facilitates the adsorption of THQ on the metal surface, which is evident from the MD simulation study. The changes in the surface topography and elemental composition of the metal specimen in the inhibited and uninhibited solution are monitored by SEM and EDX spectral studies. XPS data support the presence of both THQ and coumarin on the metal surface and the existence of co-ordinate bonding between the metal's d orbital and the O atoms of THQ. Theoretical and experimental studies support the mixed mode of adsorption of THQ as physisorption followed by chemisorption. This study evaluates the corrosion inhibition property of the aqueous and alcoholic leaf extracts of the medicinal plant Ayapana triplinervis.![]()

Abstract
This study aims to develop a controlled release oil palm empty fruit bunch hemicellulose (EFB-H) inhibitor tablet for mild steel in 1 M HCl. As plant extracts tend to deteriorate at longer immersion time, limiting its industrial applicability, we attempted to lengthen the inhibition time by forming a controlled release inhibitor tablet. Electrochemical methods (potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) were employed to investigate the efficiency and mechanism of the inhibition. An optimum dosage and immersion time was determined via Response Surface Methodology (RSM). EFB-H tablet was formulated using D-optimal mixture design, and its anticorrosion action at extended immersion time was compared with EFB-H powder. PDP measurement revealed that EFB-H is a mixed type inhibitor. RSM optimization unveiled that the optimum point for a maximum inhibition efficiency (87.11%) was at 0.33 g of EFB-H and 120 h of immersion time. Tablet T3 with EFB-H to gum Arabic to hydroxypropyl methylcellulose ratio of 66:0:34 portrayed the best tensile strength (0.243 MPa), disintegration time (152 min) and dissolution behavior. EFB-H tablet exhibited a longer-lasting inhibition effect than powder, which was 360 h as compared to 120 h for powder. Overall, EFB-H tablet has been successfully developed, and its enhanced effective inhibition time has been experimentally proven.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 has stronger infectivity and a higher risk for severity than most other contagious respiratory illnesses. The mechanisms underlying this difference remain unclear. METHODS We compared the immunological landscape between COVID-19 and two other contagious respiratory illnesses (influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)) by clustering analysis of the three diseases based on 27 immune signatures' scores. RESULTS We identified three immune subtypes: Immunity-H, Immunity-M, and Immunity-L, which displayed high, medium, and low immune signatures, respectively. We found 20%, 35.5%, and 44.5% of COVID-19 cases included in Immunity-H, Immunity-M, and Immunity-L, respectively; all influenza cases were included in Immunity-H; 66.7% and 33.3% of RSV cases belonged to Immunity-H and Immunity-L, respectively. These data indicate that most COVID-19 patients have weaker immune signatures than influenza and RSV patients, as evidenced by 22 of the 27 immune signatures having lower enrichment scores in COVID-19 than in influenza and/or RSV. The Immunity-M COVID-19 patients had the highest expression levels of ACE2 and IL-6 and lowest viral loads and were the youngest. In contrast, the Immunity-H COVID-19 patients had the lowest expression levels of ACE2 and IL-6 and highest viral loads and were the oldest. Most immune signatures had lower enrichment levels in the intensive care unit (ICU) than in non-ICU patients. Gene ontology analysis showed that the innate and adaptive immune responses were significantly downregulated in COVID-19 versus healthy individuals. CONCLUSIONS Compared to influenza and RSV, COVID-19 displayed significantly different immunological profiles. Elevated immune signatures are associated with better prognosis in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Non-metallic pipe (NMP) materials are used as an internal lining and standalone pipes in the oil and gas industry, constituting an emerging corrosion strategy. The NMP materials are inherently susceptible to gradual damage due to creep, fatigue, permeation, processing defects, and installation blunder. In the presence of acid gases (CO2, H2S), and hydrocarbons under high pressure and temperature, the main damage is due to permeation. The monitoring of possible damage due to permeation is not well defined, which leads to uncertainty in asset integrity management. Assessment of permeation damage is currently performed through mechanical, thermal, chemical, and structural properties, employing Tensile Test, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)/Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), to evaluate the change in tensile strength, elongation, weight loss or gain, crystallinity, chemical properties, and molecular structure. Coupons are commonly used to analyze the degradation of polymers. They are point sensors and did not give real-time information. Polymers are dielectric materials, and this dielectric property can be studied using Impedance Analyzer and Dielectric Spectroscopy. This review presents a brief status report on the failure of polymer liners in pipelines due to the exposure of acid gases, hydrocarbons, and other contaminants. Permeation, liner failures, the importance of monitoring, and new exclusive (dielectric) property are briefly discussed. An inclusive perspective is provided, showing the challenges associated with the monitoring of the polymer liner material in the pipeline as it relates to the life-time prediction requirement.
