Platinum Based Nanoparticles Produced by a Pulsed Spark Discharge as a Promising Material for Gas Sensors

Current Trends and Promising Electrode Materials in Micro-Supercapacitor Printing

The development of scientific and technological foundations for the creation of high-performance energy storage devices is becoming increasingly important due to the rapid development of microelectronics, including flexible and wearable microelectronics. Supercapacitors are indispensable devices for the power supply of systems requiring high power, high charging-discharging rates, cyclic stability, and long service life and a wide range of operating temperatures (from -40 to 70 °C). The use of printing technologies gives an opportunity to move the production of such devices to a new level due to the possibility of the automated formation of micro-supercapacitors (including flexible, stretchable, wearable) with the required type of geometric implementation, to reduce time and labour costs for their creation, and to expand the prospects of their commercialization and widespread use. Within the framework of this review, we have focused on the consideration of the key commonly used supercapacitor electrode materials and highlighted examples of their successful printing in the process of assembling miniature energy storage devices.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nickel Oxide and Its Application in the Additive Manufacturing of Planar Nanostructures

The hydrothermal synthesis of nickel oxide in the presence of triethanolamine was studied. Furthermore, the relationship between the synthesis conditions, thermal behavior, crystal structure features, phase composition and microstructure of semi-products, and the target oxide nanopowders was established. The thermal behavior of the semi-products was studied using a simultaneous thermal analysis (in particular, using one that involved thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, TGA/DSC). An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that varying the triethanolamine and nickel chloride concentration in the reaction system can govern the formation of α- and β-Ni(OH)2-based semi-products that contain Ni(HCO3)2 or Ni2(CO3)(OH)2 as additional components. The set of functional groups in the powders was determined using a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis. Using microextrusion printing, a composite NiO—(CeO2)0.80(Sm2O3)0.20 anode film was fabricated. Using XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses, it was demonstrated that the crystal structure, dispersity, and microstructure character of the obtained material correspond to the initial nanopowders. Using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM), the local electrophysical properties of the printed composite film were examined. The value of its conductivity was evaluated using the four-probe method on a direct current in the temperature range of 300–650 °C. The activation energy for the 500–650 °C region, which is of most interest in the context of intermediate-temperature SOFCs working temperatures, has been estimated.

Controlled Synthesis of Platinum and Silver Nanoparticles Using Multivalent Ligands

Here, the controlled formation of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using amine-functionalized multivalent ligands are reported. The effects of reaction temperature and ligand multivalency on the growth kinetics, size, and shape of PtNPs and AgNPs were systematically studied by performing a stepwise and a one-step process. PtNPs and AgNPs were prepared in the presence of amine ligands using platinum (II) acetylacetonate and silver (I) acetylacetonate, respectively. The effects of ligands and temperature on the formation of PtNPs were studied using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). For the characterization of AgNPs, additionally, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption was employed. The TEM measurements revealed that PtNPs prepared at different temperatures (160–200 °C, in a stepwise process) are monodispersed and of spherical shape regardless of the ligand multivalency or reaction temperature. In the preparation of PtNPs by the one-step process, ligands affect the shape of the PtNPs, which can be explained by the affinity of the ligands. The TEM and UV-Vis absorption studies on the formation of AgNPs with mono-, di-, and trivalent ligands showed narrower size distributions, while increasing the temperature from 80 °C to 120 °C and with a trivalent ligand in a one-step process.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Ag Thin Films and Their SERS Application

In this article, a facile, one-step method for the formation of silver thin-film nanostructures on the surface of Al₂O₃ substrates using the hydrothermal method is proposed. The dependence of the SERS effect intensity of the formed films during the detection of methylene blue (MB) low concentrations on the synthesis conditions, additional temperature treatment, and laser radiation wavelength (532 and 780 nm) in comparison with similar dye films on commercial SERS substrates is shown. The detection limit of the analyte used for the indicated lasers is estimated. The effect of the synthesis temperature on the particle size, crystal structure, and microstructure features of the obtained thin films based on silver nanoparticles is demonstrated. Using spreading resistance microscopy, the interface between the substrate and Ag particles is studied, and the dependence of the size of the corresponding gap between them and the nature of microstructural defects on the parameters of hydrothermal treatment of reaction systems in the presence of Al₂O₃ substrates is shown. As a result of the study, the factors associated with the properties of the obtained SERS substrates and the parameters of recording the spectra, which affect the amplification factor of the spectral lines intensity of the analyte, are revealed.

Interaction of Reactive Gases with Platinum Aerosol Particles at Room Temperature: Effects on Morphology and Surface Properties

Nanoparticles produced in technical aerosol processes exhibit often dendritic structures, composed of primary particles. Surprisingly, a small but consistent discrepancy was observed between the results of common aggregation models and in situ measurements of structural parameters, such as fractal dimension or mass-mobility exponent. A phenomenon which has received little attention so far is the interaction of agglomerates with admixed gases, which might be responsible for this discrepancy. In this work, we present an analytical series, which underlines the agglomerate morphology depending on the reducing or oxidizing nature of a carrier gas for platinum particles. When hydrogen is added to openly structured particles, as investigated by tandem differential mobility analysis (DMA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, Pt particles compact already at room temperature, resulting in an increased fractal dimension. Aerosol Photoemission Spectroscopy (APES) was also able to demonstrate the interaction of a gas with a nanoscaled platinum surface, resulting in a changed sintering behavior for reducing and oxidizing atmospheres in comparison to nitrogen. The main message of this work is about the structural change of particles exposed to a new environment after complete particle formation. We suspect significant implications for the interpretation of agglomerate formation, as many aerosol processes involve reactive gases or slightly contaminated gases in terms of trace amounts of unintended species.

Optimizing Aerosol Jet Printing Process of Platinum Ink for High-Resolution Conductive Microstructures on Ceramic and Polymer Substrates

Printing nano-ink with platinum nanoparticles to generate conductive microstructures for electronics on different types of substrates has gained increasing interest in recent years. To solve the problem of the low conductivity of platinum (Pt) nano-ink, we synthesized chemically pure Pt nanoparticles with sizes of 18.2 ± 9.0 nm by spark discharge method. A low toxic solvent, ethylene glycol with water, was used to ensure the aggregation stability of Pt nanoparticles. Polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as an adhesive additive and binder in the nano-ink. Narrow and conductive Pt lines were generated by aerosol jet printing technology. The resistivity of the Pt lines sintered at 750 °C on alumina substrate was found to exceed the bulk Pt by about 13%. Moreover, the Pt film fabricated on polymer substrates has demonstrated excellent mechanical flexibility in terms of twisting tests.
