In the ongoing pursuit of enhancing food safety and quality through advanced technologies, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) stand out for their antimicrobial properties. Despite being overshadowed by other nanoparticles in food sensing applications, AgNPs possess inherent qualities that make them effective tools for rapid and selective contaminant detection in food matrices. This review aims to reinvigorate the interest in AgNPs in the food industry, emphasizing their sensing mechanism and the transformative potential of integrating them with artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced food safety monitoring. It discusses key AI tools and principles in the food industry, demonstrating their positive impact on food analytical chemistry. The interplay between AI and biosensors offers many advantages and adaptability to dynamic analytical challenges, significantly improving food safety monitoring and potentially redefining the landscape of food safety and quality assurance.

Exploring the effective adsorption of polystyrene microplastics from aqueous solution with magnetically separable nickel/reduced graphene oxide (Ni/rGO) nanocomposite

Microplastics (MPs) are a potential threat to both humans and aquatic environment as they serve as carriers of various contaminants necessitating the development of reliable, efficient, and ecofriendly techniques to remove MPs from water. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) magnetized using nickel nanoparticles was utilized as a potent adsorbent for the effective removal of microplastics from water. The synthesized nickel/reduced graphene oxide (Ni/rGO) nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett Teller (BET) analysis. Magnetic Ni/rGO nanocomposite exhibited significant adsorption capability for polystyrene (PS) microspheres allowing the formation of PS-Ni/rGO complex which can be easily separated out using a magnet. The SEM images of PS-Ni/rGO complex confirmed the adsorption of PS microspheres onto the nano adsorbent due to hydrophobic interaction. The adsorbent demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of 1250 mg/g. The analysis of isotherm and kinetic models demonstrated that the adsorption mechanism conformed to the Langmuir isotherm and followed pseudo second order kinetics. This study paves a new pathway for the application of magnetically modified reduced graphene oxide for the expedient removal of microplastics from water with the ease of separation using a magnet. The adsorbent was recycled and reused for three times.

Docosahexaenoic acid-loaded nanoparticles: A state-of-the-art of preparation methods, characterization, functionality, and therapeutic applications

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3), an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, offers several beneficial effects. DHA helps in reducing depression, autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases. It can stimulate the development of brain and nerve, alleviate lipids metabolism-related disorders, and enhance vision development. However, DHA susceptibility to chemical oxidation, poor water solubility, and unpleasant order could restrict its applications for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. To avoid these drawbacks and enhance its bioavailability, DHA can be encapsulated using an effective delivery system. Several encapsulation methods are recognized, and DHA-loaded nanoparticles have demonstrated numerous benefits. In clinical studies, positive influences on the development of several diseases have been reported, but some assumptions are conflicting and need more exploration, since DHA has a systemic and not a targeted release at the required level. This might cause the applications of nanoparticles that could allow DHA release at the required level and improve its efficiency, thus resulting in a better controlling of several diseases. In the current review, we focused on researches investigating the formulation and development of DHA-loaded nanoparticles using different delivery systems, including low-density lipoprotein, zinc oxide, silver, zein, and resveratrol-stearate. Silver-DHA nanoparticles presented a typical particle size of 24 nm with an incorporation level of 97.67 %, while the entrapment efficiency of zinc oxide-DHA nanoparticles represented 87.3 %. By using zein/Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) stabilized nanoparticles, DHA's encapsulation level reached 84.6 %. We have also highlighted the characteristics, functionality and medical implementation of these nanoparticles in the treatment of inflammations, brain disorders, diabetes as well as hepatocellular carcinoma.

Numerical modeling and in situ small angle X-ray scattering characterization of ultra-small SPION magnetophoresis in a high field and gradient separator

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have recently gained significant attention in various fields, including chemical and biomedical applications, due to their exceptional properties. However, separating MNPs from solution via magnetophoresis is challenging when MNPs are smaller than 50 nm as Brownian forces become on the order of the magnetic forces. In this study, we successfully separated small MNPs (5-30 nm) by utilizing high magnetic fields and gradients generated by economical permanent magnets. In situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to investigate the time-dependent concentration changes in the ferrofluid, and the results validated that only the 30 nm particles experienced particle aggregation or agglomeration, indicating that dipole-dipole interactions did not play a discernable role in the separation process for particles smaller than ∼15 nm. However, numerical simulations have provided further validation that in the absence of particle-particle interactions, even MNPs with diameters less than 15 nm exhibited magnetophoresis that effectively counteracted the effects of Brownian motion.

An overview of green synthesized silver nanoparticles towards bioactive antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal applications

Present review emphatically introduces the synthesis, biocompatibility, and applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), including their antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. A comprehensive discussion of various synthesis methods for AgNPs, with a particular focus on green chemistry mediated by plant extracts has been made. Recent research has revealed that the optical properties of AgNPs, including surface plasmon resonance (SPR), depend on the particle size, as well as the synthesis methods, preparation synthesis parameters, and used reducing agents. The significant emphasis on the use of synthesized AgNPs as antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal agents in various applications has been reviewed. Furthermore, the application areas have been thoroughly examined, providing a detailed discussion of the underlying mechanisms, which aids in determining the optimal control parameters during the synthesis process of AgNPs. Furthermore, the challenges encountered while utilizing AgNPs and the corresponding advancements to overcome them have also been addressed. This review not only summarizes the achievements and current status of plant-mediated green synthesis of AgNPs but also explores the future prospects of these materials and technology in diverse areas, including bioactive applications.

A Metasurface Plasmonic Analysis Platform Combined with Gold Nanoparticles for Ultrasensitive Quantitative Detection of Small Molecules

Food safety related to drug residues in food has become a widespread public concern. Small-molecule drug residue analysis often relies on mass spectrometry, thin-layer chromatography, or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Some of these techniques have limited sensitivity and accuracy, while others are time-consuming, costly, and rely on specialized equipment that requires skilled operation. Therefore, the development of a sensitive, fast, and easy-to-operate biosensor could provide an accessible alternative to conventional small-molecule analysis. Here, we developed a nanocup array-enhanced metasurface plasmon resonance (MetaSPR) chip coupled with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) (MSPRAN) to detect small molecules. As sulfamethazine drug residues in poultry eggs may cause health issues, we selected this as a model to evaluate the feasibility of using MSPRAN for small-molecule detection. The MSPRAN biosensor employed competitive immunoassay technology for sulfamethazine detection. The limit of detection was calculated as 73 pg/mL, with sensitivity approximately twice that of previously reported detection methods. Additionally, the recovery rate of the biosensor, tested in egg samples, was similar to that measured using ELISA. Overall, this newly developed MSPRAN biosensor platform for small-molecule detection provides fast and reliable results, facile operation, and is relatively cost-effective for application in food safety testing, environmental monitoring, or clinical diagnostics.

Optimization of Coherent Dynamics of Localized Surface Plasmons in Gold and Silver Nanospheres; Large Size Effects

Noble metal nanoparticles have attracted attention in recent years due to a number of their exciting applications in plasmonic applications, e.g., in sensing, high-gain antennas, structural colour printing, solar energy management, nanoscale lasing, and biomedicines. The report embraces the electromagnetic description of inherent properties of spherical nanoparticles, which enable resonant excitation of Localized Surface Plasmons (defined as collective excitations of free electrons), and the complementary model in which plasmonic nanoparticles are treated as quantum quasi-particles with discrete electronic energy levels. A quantum picture including plasmon damping processes due to the irreversible coupling to the environment enables us to distinguish between the dephasing of coherent electron motion and the decay of populations of electronic states. Using the link between classical EM and the quantum picture, the explicit dependence of the population and coherence damping rates as a function of NP size is given. Contrary to the usual expectations, such dependence for Au and Ag NPs is not a monotonically growing function, which provides a new perspective for tailoring plasmonic properties in larger-sized nanoparticles, which are still hardly available experimentally. The practical tools for comparing the plasmonic performance of gold and silver nanoparticles of the same radii in an extensive range of sizes are also given.

Ion-Mediated Protein Stabilization on Nanoscopic Surfaces

The emergence of nanoparticles in biomedical applications has made their interactions with proteins inevitable. Nanoparticles conjugated with proteins and peptide-based constructs form an integral part of nanotherapeutics and have recently shown promise in treating a myriad of diseases. The proper functioning of proteins is critical to achieve their biological functions. However, interface issues result in the denaturation of proteins, and the loss of orientation and steric hindrance can adversely affect the function of the conjugate. Furthermore, surface-induced denaturation also triggers protein aggregation, resulting in amyloid-like species. Understanding the mechanistic underpinnings of protein-nanoparticle interactions and controlling their interfacial characteristics are critical and challenging due to the complex nature of the conjugates. In this milieu, we demonstrate that ionic liquids can be suitable candidates for stabilizing protein-nanoparticle interactions by virtue of their excellent protein-preserving properties. We also probe the previously unexplored mechanism of ion-mediated stabilization of the protein molecules on the nanoparticle surface. The protein-nanoparticle conjugates consist of lysozyme and choline-based ionic liquids characterized by optical and electron microscopy techniques combined with surface-sensitive plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of the conjugates delineate interfacial interactions of the protein molecules and the modulation by the ions, particularly the conformational changes and the dynamic correlation when the protein and specific ionic liquid molecules are adsorbed on the nanoparticle surface. The combined experimental and computational studies showed the synergistic behavior of the ions of the ionic liquids, specifically the orientation and coverage of the anions aided by the cations to control the surface interactions and hence the overall protein stability. These studies pave the way for using ionic liquids, particularly their biocompatible counterparts in nanoparticle-based complexes, as stabilizing agents for biomedical applications.

Silver Nanoparticles and Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice) Root Extract as Modifying Agents of Hydrogels Designed as Innovative Dressings

The interest in the application of plant extracts as modifiers of polymers intended for biomedical purposes is constantly increasing. The therapeutical properties of the licorice root, including its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity, make this plant particularly promising. The same applies to silver nanoparticles showing antibacterial properties. Thus the main purpose of the research was to design hydrogel dressings containing both licorice root extract and nanosilver so as to obtain a system promoting wound regeneration processes by preventing infection and inflammation within the wound. The first step included the preparation of the plant extract via the solid-liquid extraction using the Soxhlet extractor and the synthesis of silver nanoparticles by the chemical reduction of silver ions using a sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. Subsequently, hydrogels were synthesized via photopolymerization and subjected to studies aiming at characterizing their sorption properties, surface morphology via scanning electron microscopy, and their impact on simulated physiological liquids supported by defining these liquids' influence on hydrogels' structures by FT-IR spectroscopy. Next, the tensile strength of hydrogels and their percentage elongation were determined. Performed studies also allowed for determining the hydrogels' wettability and free surface energies. Finally, the cytotoxicity of hydrogels towards L929 murine fibroblasts via the MTT reduction assay was also verified. It was demonstrated that developed materials showed stability in simulated physiological liquids. Moreover, hydrogels were characterized by high elasticity (percentage elongation within the range of 24-29%), and their surfaces were hydrophilic (wetting angles below 90°). Hydrogels containing both licorice extract and nanosilver showed smooth and homogeneous surfaces. Importantly, cytotoxic properties towards L929 murine fibroblasts were excluded; thus, developed materials seem to have great potential for application as innovative dressings.

Engineering Heterostructures of Layered Double Hydroxides and Metal Nanoparticles for Plasmon-Enhanced Catalysis

Artificially designed heterostructures formed by close conjunctions of plasmonic metal nanoparticles (PNPs) and non-plasmonic (2D) lamellar nanostructures are receiving extensive interest. The synergistic interactions of the nanounits induce the manifestation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in plasmonic metals in the specific environment of the 2D-light absorbing matrix, impacting their potential in plasmon enhanced catalysis. Specifically, layered double hydroxides (LDH) with the advantages of their unique 2D-layered structure, tuned optical absorption, ease of preparation, composition diversity, and high surface area, have emerged as very promising candidates for obtaining versatile and robust catalysts. In this review, we cover the available PNPs/LDH heterostructures, from the most used noble-metals plasmonic of Au and Ag to the novel non-noble-metals plasmonic of Cu and Ni, mainly focusing on their synthesis strategies toward establishing a synergistic response in the coupled nanounits and relevant applications in plasmonic catalysis. First, the structure–properties relationship in LDH, establishing the desirable features of the 2D-layered matrix facilitating photocatalysis, is shortly described. Then, we address the recent research interests toward fabrication strategies for PNPs/support heterostructures as plasmonic catalysts. Next, we highlight the synthesis strategies for available PNPs/LDH heterostructures, how these are entangled with characteristics that enable the manifestation of the plasmon-induced charge separation effect (PICS), co-catalytic effect, or nanoantenna effect in plasmonic catalysis with applications in energy related and environmental photocatalysis. Finally, some perspectives on the challenges and future directions of PNPs/LDHs heterostructures to improve their performance as plasmonic catalysts are discussed.

Based on the following three facts, the discussion of the evidence in human and veterinary homeopathy lays the foundations for a comprehensive presentation of the evidence on homeopathy: (a) homeopathic medicinal products without indication are 100% identical with regard to production, quality, safety, and principles of application, regardless of whether they are used in animals or humans; (b) if the simile principle is adhered to that classical (=individualized) homeopathic therapy is based on the individual and not on the indication; and (c) if the proof of effectiveness of individualized homeopathy in one or more indications is available, the logical consequence seems to be that it can be concluded that it is effective in other indications. When criteria for evidence-based medicine for design, conduction, documentation, and rating of studies in homeopathy are considered, effects on all quality levels according to Cochrane criteria are recognizable, especially for individualized homeopathy, even in methodologically high-quality studies. In view of One Health and of the demands of the European Green Deal (Farm2Fork Strategy) and the EU Organic Regulation 2018/848, the application of homeopathy in the sense of integrative veterinary medicine (a combination of patient-oriented conventional and complementary veterinary medicine) and the integration of complementary medicine including homeopathy at the universities seems a necessary consequence and requirement in the interests of the patient.

Advancements in Three Dimensional In-Vitro Cell Culture Models

This review summarizes the major techniques and materials used to develop 3D platforms, especially for cancer. It also discusses the challenges and some unresolved issues of the field and highlights some techniques that have made it to the market.

Plant protein-based nanocomposite films: A review on the used nanomaterials, characteristics, and food packaging applications

Consumer demands to utilize environmentally friendly packaging have led researchers to develop packaging materials from naturally derived resources. In recent years, plant protein-based films as a replacement for synthetic plastics have attracted the attention of the global food packaging industry due to their biodegradability and unique properties. Biopolymer-based films need a filler to show improved packaging properties. One of the latest strategies introduced to food packaging technology is the production of nanocomposite films which are multiphase materials containing a filler with at least one dimension less than 100 nm. This review provides the recent findings on plant-based protein films as biodegradable materials that can be combined with nanoparticles that are applicable to food packaging. Moreover, it investigates the characterization of nanocomposite plant-based protein films/edible coatings. It also briefly describes the application of plant-based protein nanocomposite films/coating on fruits/vegetables, meat and seafood products, and some other foods. The results indicate that the functional performance, barrier, mechanical, optical, thermal and antimicrobial properties of plant protein-based materials can be extended by incorporating nanomaterials. Recent reports provide a better understanding of how incorporating nanomaterials into plant protein-based biopolymers leads to an increase in the shelf life of food products during storage time.

Nanomaterial-Based Label-Free Electrochemical Aptasensors for the Detection of Thrombin

Thrombin plays a central role in hemostasis and its imbalances in coagulation can lead to various pathologies. It is of clinical significance to develop a fast and accurate method for the quantitative detection of thrombin. Electrochemical aptasensors have the capability of combining the specific selectivity from aptamers with the extraordinary sensitivity from electrochemical techniques and thus have attracted considerable attention for the trace-level detection of thrombin. Nanomaterials and nanostructures can further enhance the performance of thrombin aptasensors to achieve high sensitivity, selectivity, and antifouling functions. In highlighting these material merits and their impacts on sensor performance, this paper reviews the most recent advances in label-free electrochemical aptasensors for thrombin detection, with an emphasis on nanomaterials and nanostructures utilized in sensor design and fabrication. The performance, advantages, and limitations of those aptasensors are summarized and compared according to their material structures and compositions.

Bioconjugated nanometals and cancer therapy: a pharmaceutical perspective

Conventional cancer chemotherapies are associated with challenges like delivering sub-therapeutic doses to target cells, lack of bioavailability, drug insolubility and nonspecific toxicity to healthy cells. Nanomedicine, an advanced process, can contribute to the development of personalized medicine for diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of cancer. The nanometals enhance drug dissolution and adhesion to targeted tumor surfaces, resulting in rapid onset of effective therapeutic action. Moreover, nanometals can be conjugated with ligands or polymers through a conjugation process, which further leads to enhanced efficiency, target specificity, improved pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug. This review focuses on the applications of conjugated nanometals in cancer therapy, with a special focus on noble and magnetic nanometals.

Green Synthesis: An Eco-friendly Route for the Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Green approach has received major attention for the synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles. One such metal oxide nanoparticles are iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). IONPs have fetched a great deal of interest in recent era because of their magnetic nature, as they can be easily recovered from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnetic field. Although, a variety of chemical and physical methods of synthesis are known, green synthesis is safer, sustainable and biologically acceptable. Plants and microbes are the main biological materials used for the green synthesis. In present review, the synthesis of IONPs by using plants, bacteria, fungi and algae have been highlighted. IONPs produced by plants, fungi, bacteria and algae usually falls in 1–100 nm range and are of distinct shapes like cubic, tetragonal crystalline, spherical, cylindrical, elliptical, octahedral, orthorhombic, hexagonal rods, nanosphere and quasi spherical. Furthermore, these biomaterials play role of reducing, capping, stabilizing and fabricating agents in green synthesis of nanoparticles. The review put forward a comprehensive report of various routes used for synthesizing IONP, biologically. Intuition into the procedures for synthesis of nanoparticles will help to nourish our learning in the area of nanotechnology.

Recent Advances in (Bio)Chemical Sensors for Food Safety and Quality Based on Silver Nanomaterials

There is a continuing need for tools and devices which can simplify, quicken and reduce the cost of analyses of food safety and quality. Chemical sensors and biosensors are increasingly being developed for this purpose, reaping from the opportunities provided by nanotechnology. Due to the distinct electrical and optical properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this material plays a vital role in (bio)sensor development. This review is an analysis of chemical sensors and biosensors based on silver nanoparticles with application in food and beverage matrices. It consists of academic research published from 2015 to 2020. The paper is structured to separately explore the designs of two major (bio)sensor classes: electrochemical (including voltammetric and impedimetric sensors) and optical sensors (including colourimetric and luminescent), with special focus on the type of silver nanomaterial and its role in the sensor system. The review indicates that diverse nanosensors have been developed, capable of detecting analytes such as pesticides, mycotoxins, fertilisers, microorganisms, heavy metals, and various additives with exceptional analytical performance. Current trends in the design of such sensors are highlighted and challenges which need to be overcome in the future are discussed.

A facile route to transfer Cu nanoparticles to organic medium for better stabilization and improved photocatalytic activity towards N-formylation reaction

Cu nanoparticles were prepared in an aqueous phase by means of a simple reduction-route using sodium borohydride as the reducing agent in the presence of ascorbic acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The hydrosol of the Cu nanoparticles deteriorated within a day. It compelled to initiate a scheme to stabilize the nanoparticles for a long period of time. Phase transfer to organic solvents using Benzyldimethylstearylammonium chloride (BDSAC) as a phase transfer agent was found to be an effective path in this respect. BDSAC performed the dual role of dragging the Cu nanoparticles from water to organic solvent and also acted as a capping agent along with PVP for better stabilization of Cu nanoparticles. The organosol of the Cu nanoparticles exhibited excellent stability and promising catalytic activity towards N-formylation reactions on a number of amine substrates in presence of visible green LED light. The yield and reusability of the catalyst were promising. All the samples were thoroughly characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis of x-rays, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermo gravimetric analysis.

Green Synthesis of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles from Plant Extracts and Their Possible Applications as Antimicrobial Agents in the Agricultural Area

Currently, metal nanoparticles have varied uses for different medical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural applications. Nanobiotechnology, combined with green chemistry, has great potential for the development of novel and necessary products that benefit human health, environment, and industries. Green chemistry has an important role due to its contribution to unconventional synthesis methods of gold and silver nanoparticles from plant extracts, which have exhibited antimicrobial potential, among other outstanding properties. Biodiversity-rich countries need to collect and convert knowledge from biological resources into processes, compounds, methods, and tools, which need to be achieved along with sustainable use and exploitation of biological diversity. Therefore, this paper describes the relevant reported green synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles from plant extracts and their capacity as antimicrobial agents within the agricultural field for fighting against bacterial and fungal pathogens that can cause plant, waterborne, and foodborne diseases. Moreover, this work makes a brief review of nanoparticles' contribution to water treatment and the development of "environmentally-friendly" nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanoherbicides, as well as presenting the harmful effects of nanoparticles accumulation in plants and soils.

A panoramic view on phytochemical, nutritional, and therapeutic attributes of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.: A comprehensive review

Ziziphus mauritiana (Rhamnaceae), commonly known as Indian jujube, is a pharmacologically diverse medicinal plant. A plethora of active phytochemical constituents of this plant has been revealed so far, namely, berberine, quercetin, kaempferol, sitosterol, stigmasterol, lanosterol, diosgenin, and so forth. Several studies demonstrated the exploration of pharmacological potential of various parts such as fruits, leaves, and stems of the plant as antioxidant, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, anti-diarrhoeal, antidepressant, immunomodulator, and hepatoprotective. This review gives a unique summary including phytochemistry, nutritional value, and significant pharmacological importance of Z. mauritiana. The literature search was carried out via search engine PubMed, Science Direct, and so on. The data were heterogeneous in terms of leaves, stem, roots, and fruits which were used for different experimental findings, which made the comparison a lengthy task. Study findings suggested that the extracts from this plant may possess numerous types of pharmacological activities. As the search for novel drugs from botanical sources continues, there is need for future investigations to isolate and characterize pharmacologically active agents that confer medicinal properties on Z. mauritiana, as well as to elucidate the structures of these agents by which they exert their healing properties and to scientifically validate the existing traditional practices concerning its health benefits.

Melamine Foams Decorated with In-Situ Synthesized Gold and Palladium Nanoparticles

A versatile and straightforward route to produce polymer foams with functional surface through their decoration with gold and palladium nanoparticles is proposed. Melamine foams, used as polymeric porous substrates, are first covered with a uniform coating of polydimethylsiloxane, thin enough to assure the preservation of their original porous structure. The polydimethylsiloxane layer allows the facile in-situ formation of metallic Au and Pd nanoparticles with sizes of tens of nanometers directly on the surface of the struts of the foam by the direct immersion of the foams into gold or palladium precursor solutions. The effect of the gold and palladium precursor concentration, as well as the reaction time with the foams, to the amount and sizes of the nanoparticles synthesized on the foams, was studied and the ideal conditions for an optimized functionalization were defined. Gold and palladium contents of about 1 wt.% were achieved, while the nanoparticles were proven to be stably adhered to the foam, avoiding potential risks related to their accidental release.

Silver Nanoparticles as Colorimetric Sensors for Water Pollutants

This review provides an up-to-date overview on silver nanoparticles-based materials suitable as optical sensors for water pollutants. The topic is really hot considering the implications for human health and environment due to water pollutants. In fact, the pollutants present in the water disturb the spontaneity of life-related mechanisms, such as the synthesis of cellular constituents and the transport of nutrients into cells, and this causes long / short-term diseases. For this reason, research continuously tends to develop always innovative, selective and efficient processes / technologies to remove pollutants from water. In this paper we will report on the silver nanoparticles synthesis, paying attention to the stabilizers and mostly used ligands, to the characterizations, to the properties and applications as colorimetric sensors for water pollutants. As water pollutants our attention will be focused on several heavy metals ions, such as Hg(II), Ni(II),Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Cr(III/V) Co(II) Cd(II), Pb(II), due to their dangerous effects on human health. In addition, several systems based on silver nanoparticles employed as pesticides colorimetric sensors in water will be also discussed. All of this with the aim to provide to readers a guide about recent advanced silver nanomaterials, used as colorimetric sensors in water.

Study of Antibacterial Properties of Ziziphus mauritiana based Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles against Various Bacterial Strains

Due to their low cost and environmentally friendly nature, plant extracts based methods have gained significant popularity among researchers for the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles. Herein, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles was performed using the aqueous solution of Ziziphus mauritiana leaves extract (ZM-LE) as a bio-reducing agent. The as-obtained silver nanoparticles were characterized by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD (X-ray diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), and FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy). In addition, the effects of the concentrations of the leaves extract, silver nitrate, and the temperature on the preparation of nanoparticles were also investigated. In order to determine the nature of secondary metabolites present in leaves extract, a preliminary investigation of phytoconstituents was carried out using different methods including Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 methods. The results have indicated the presence of a considerable amount of phenolic and flavonoid contents in the leaves extract, which are believed to be responsible for the reduction of silver ions and stabilization of resulting nanoparticles. Indeed, the FT-IR spectrum of silver nanoparticles also confirmed the presence of residual phytomolecules of leaves extract as stabilizing ligands on the surface of nanoparticles. The antibacterial properties of as-obtained silver nanoparticles were tested against various bacterial strains including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis. The nanoparticles strongly inhibited the growth of S. aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2.5 μg/ml and moderately inhibited the growth of E. coli with a MIC of 5 μg/ml.

Gluten Detection Methods and Their Critical Role in Assuring Safe Diets for Celiac Patients

Celiac disease, wheat sensitivity, and allergy represent three different reactions, which may occur in genetically predisposed individuals on the ingestion of wheat and derived products with various manifestations. Improvements in the disease diagnostics and understanding of disease etiology unveiled that these disorders are widespread around the globe affecting about 7% of the population. The only known treatment so far is a life-long gluten-free diet, which is almost impossible to follow because of the contamination of allegedly "gluten-free" products. Accidental contamination of inherently gluten-free products could take place at any level from field to shelf because of the ubiquity of these proteins/grains. Gluten contamination of allegedly "gluten-free" products is a constant threat to celiac patients and a major health concern. Several detection procedures have been proposed to determine the level of contamination in products for celiac patients. The present article aims to review the advantages and disadvantages of different gluten detection methods, with emphasis on the recent technology that allows identification of the immunogenic-gluten peptides without the use of antibodies. The possibility to detect gluten contamination by different approaches with similar or better detection efficiency in different raw and processed foods will guarantee the safety of the foods for celiac patients.
