Abstract
The restriction of plant-symbiont dinitrogen fixation by an insect semiochemical had not been previously described. Here we report on a glycosylated triketide δ-lactone from Nephrotoma cornicina crane flies, cornicinine, that causes chlorosis in the floating-fern symbioses from the genus Azolla. Only the glycosylated trans-A form of chemically synthesized cornicinine was active: 500 nM cornicinine in the growth medium turned all cyanobacterial filaments from Nostoc azollae inside the host leaf-cavities into akinetes typically secreting CTB-bacteriocins. Cornicinine further inhibited akinete germination in Azolla sporelings, precluding re-establishment of the symbiosis during sexual reproduction. It did not impact development of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana or several free-living cyanobacteria from the genera Anabaena or Nostoc but affected the fern host without cyanobiont. Fern-host mRNA sequencing from isolated leaf cavities confirmed high NH4-assimilation and proanthocyanidin biosynthesis in this trichome-rich tissue. After cornicinine treatment, it revealed activation of Cullin-RING ubiquitin-ligase-pathways, known to mediate metabolite signaling and plant elicitation consistent with the chlorosis phenotype, and increased JA-oxidase, sulfate transport and exosome formation. The work begins to uncover molecular mechanisms of cyanobiont differentiation in a seed-free plant symbiosis important for wetland ecology or circular crop-production today, that once caused massive CO2 draw-down during the Eocene geological past.

Abstract
Aquatic ferns of the genus Azolla (Azolla) form highly productive symbioses with filamentous cyanobacteria fixing N2 in their leaf cavities, Nostoc azollae. Stressed symbioses characteristically turn red due to 3-deoxyanthocyanidin (DA) accumulation, rare in angiosperms and of unknown function. To understand DA accumulation upon cold acclimation and recovery, we integrated laser-desorption-ionization mass-spectrometry-imaging (LDI-MSI), a new Azolla filiculoides genome-assembly and annotation, and dual RNA-sequencing into phenotypic analyses of the symbioses. Azolla sp. Anzali recovered even when cold-induced DA-accumulation was inhibited by abscisic acid. Cyanobacterial filaments generally disappeared upon cold acclimation and Nostoc azollae transcript profiles were unlike those of resting stages formed in cold-resistant sporocarps, yet filaments re-appeared in leaf cavities of newly formed green fronds upon cold-recovery. The high transcript accumulation upon cold acclimation of AfDFR1 encoding a flavanone 4-reductase active in vitro suggested that the enzyme of the first step in the DA-pathway may regulate accumulation of DAs in different tissues. However, LDI-MSI highlighted the necessity to describe metabolite accumulation beyond class assignments as individual DA and caffeoylquinic acid metabolites accumulated differentially. For example, luteolinidin accumulated in epithelial cells, including those lining the leaf cavity, supporting a role for the former in the symbiotic interaction during cold acclimation.

Abstract
Alkaline soil inhibits the growth and productivity of chia plants (Salvia hispanica L.). Microalgae as biofertilizers have been reported to induce alkalinity tolerance and enhance yield and quality. However, limited information is known concerning the influence of microalgae application on medical plants, including chia. Our experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of microalgae strains of Arthrospira platensis, Chlorella vulgaris, Nostoc muscorum, and Anabaena azollae with two application methods, foliar spray and soil drench, on morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters, yield, seed and oil quality, and fatty acid profiles of chia plants cultivated under alkaline soil conditions, as well as the on soil microbial activity. The results obtained reveal that both application methods positively influenced the growth and productivity of chia plants. However, the foliar application showed significant differences in the herb's fresh and dry weights and leaf pigments, whereas the drenching application caused more effect than the foliar spray application at the reproductive stage. Untreated chia plants showed a slight decline in the growth, productivity, and antioxidant level with an increase in Na content. However, microalgae applications significantly ameliorated these impacts as they induced an enhancement in the growth, leaf pigments, total protein and carbohydrate contents, nutrient content, seed and oil yields, as well as an increase in linolenic and linoleic fatty acids, with a reduction in saturated fatty acids, namely, palmitic and lauric acid. Soil drenching generated an improvement in the soil microbial activity and caused a reduction in the pH. The treatment of A. platensis with drenching application resulted in higher seed and oil yield, with an increase of 124 and 263.3% in seed and oil yield, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study determined the effect of processing conditions on protein extractability from Azolla pinnata fern, and their influence on the physicochemical, structural, techno-functional properties and protein quality. RESULTS The protein extraction from A. pinnata fern was optimized through response surface methodology obtaining a maximum yield of 18.93% with a recovery rate of 73.66%. The A. pinnata fern protein concentrate (AFPC) had five protein bands with a molecular weight ranging from 17 to 56 kDa. AFPC contained high β-sheet structure (36.61%), favouring its good thermal properties with three endothermic peaks at 54.28, 86.52 and 166.25 °C. The AFPC scored ≥ 1 for all essential amino acids, except for lysine and histidine. The AFPC exhibited exceptionally high techno-functional properties, particularly for water holding (5.46 g g-1 ) and fat absorption capacity (10.08 g g-1 ), and gelling properties (5% gelation concentration). The AFPC had high in vitro digestibility of 73%, signifying its high availability for human consumption. CONCLUSION The underexploited A. pinnata fern is a potential source of edible protein, thus a promising nutraceutical or ingredient of functional and health-promoting foods. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant affecting the growth and development of aquatic macrophytes. The present study was designed to evaluate the toxic effect of BPA on Azolla filiculoides. The plants were exposed to different concentrations of BPA and the effect was evaluated in terms of plant growth, physiological and oxidative status, responses of the antioxidative system, and changes in key metabolites. The results have shown that BPA (≥ 20 mg L-1) incites a significant reduction in frond number, frond surface area, and growth rate of the plants along with severe frond damage, membrane peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage. Moreover, at higher concentrations, a significant reduction in the content of chlorophylls and carotenoids was observed, which was further amplified with the duration of treatments. Furthermore, excessive generation of O2•- and H2O2 invoked the antioxidative machinery under BPA exposure. However, sufficient activity of the antioxidative enzymes was observed in plants treated with ≤ 10 mg L-1 of BPA. The untargeted metabolome profile revealed modulation of 29 metabolites including amino acids, sugar alcohols, organic acids, and phenolics in response to BPA. An increased amount of asparagine, lysine, serine, tryptophan, tyrosine, and valine after 3 days of BPA exposure indicates their role in providing better stress tolerance. Therefore, the experimental findings suggest that A. filiculoides responds differently to BPA exposure. Higher BPA concentrations (≥ 20 mg L-1) documented a greater impact in terms of plant physiology and metabolism whereas, the effect was minimal at lower concentrations (≤ 10 mg L-1).

Abstract
In this study, the potential of Azolla filiculoides, a freshwater fern species, on phenanthrene phytoremediation and biodegradation was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of phenanthrene on growth performance, photosynthetic activity and biosynthesis, and accumulation of secondary metabolites of A. filiculodes were evaluated. Plants were grown in a nitrogen-free Hoagland and exposed to different phenanthrene concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg/L). Exposure to 10 mg/L phenanthrene caused a significant reduction (42%) in Azolla filiculoides growth compared to control on day 14. The photosynthetic pigment content of A. filiculoides treated with 1 and 5 mg/L was almost the same as the control, while 10 mg/L phenanthrene was significantly reduced. In comparison to unplanted controls, the biodegradation percentages obtained from the planted growth medium were found to be 88, 69, and 60%, respectively, for the application of 1, 5, and 10 mg/L phenanthrene. Data on plant growth, photosynthetic pigments, secondary metabolite contents, and biodegradation percentages indicated the tolerance level and the effective phytoremediation potential of A. filiculoides for phenanthrene was <10 mg/L. The results indicated that A. filiculoides is highly effective in phytoremediation of low concentrations of phenanthrene pollution in a short time.

Abstract
Azolla might be considered an alternative and promising dietary ingredient for antioxidants. There have not been any reports on the incorporation of free Azolla fern powder (FAP) or its microcapsules in foods, especially fresh pasta, yet. Microencapsulation was used to mask the undesirable taste and odour of Azolla, as well as to preserve its antioxidant potential. The current study concentrated on two major goals. The first goal was to use alginate as a wall material for FAP encapsulation, as well as to characterise the FAP microcapsule for its encapsulation efficiency, solubility, and thermal stability. The second goal was to assess the impact of integrating FAP or its microcapsules into fresh macaroni on its colour parameters, cooking quality, texture properties, and sensory characteristics. The microspheres had a high encapsulation efficiency (88.19%) and a low water solubility (85.23 g/kg), making them suitable for use in foods that require cooking in water. When compared to free Azolla powder, encapsulation reduced the antioxidant activity loss rate by 67.73%. All the cooking and textural properties of fresh macaroni were not significantly affected, except for water absorption and weight gain, but the overall acceptability index (85.13%) was not affected by microcapsule incorporation.

Abstract
Photosynthesis, the ability to fix atmospheric carbon dioxide, was acquired by eukaryotes through symbiosis: the plastids of plants and algae resulted from a cyanobacterial symbiosis that commenced more than 1.5 billion years ago and has chartered a unique evolutionary path. This resulted in the evolutionary origin of plants and algae. Some extant land plants have recruited additional biochemical aid from symbiotic cyanobacteria; these plants associate with filamentous cyanobacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen. Examples of such interactions can be found in select species from across all major lineages of land plants. The recent rise in genomic and transcriptomic data has provided new insights into the molecular foundation of these interactions. Furthermore, the hornwort Anthoceros has emerged as a model system for the molecular biology of cyanobacteria-plant interactions. Here, we review these developments driven by high-throughput data and pinpoint their power to yield general patterns across these diverse symbioses.

Abstract
Azolla is a genus of floating freshwater ferns. By their high growth and N2 fixation rates, Azolla species have been exploited for centuries by populations of South-east Asia as biofertilizers in rice paddies. The use of Azolla species as a sustainable plant material for diverse applications, such as feeding, biofuel production, and bioremediation, has encountered a growing interest over the last few years. However, high levels of feed deterrent flavonoids in their fronds have discouraged the use of these ferns as a sustainable protein source for animal consumption. Additionally, information on how and to what extent environmental determinants affect the accumulation of secondary metabolites in these organisms remains poorly understood. Moving from these considerations, here, we investigated by an untargeted metabolomics approach the profiles of phenylpropanoid compounds in the fronds of Azolla filiculoides sampled under control and pigment-inducing stress conditions. In parallel, we assayed the expression of essential structural genes of the phenylpropanoid pathway by quantitative RT-PCR. This study provides novel information concerning A. filiculoides phenylpropanoid compounds and their temporal profiling in response to environmental stimuli. In particular, we show that besides the already known 3-deoxyanthocyanidins, anthocyanidins, and proanthocyanidins, this fern can accumulate additional secondary metabolites of outstanding importance, such as chemoattractants, defense compounds, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers, and crucial as dietary components for humans, such as dihydrochalcones, stilbenes, isoflavones, and phlobaphenes. The findings of this study open an opportunity for future research studies to unveil the interplay between genetic and environmental determinants underlying the elicitation of the secondary metabolites in ferns and exploit these organisms as sustainable sources of beneficial metabolites for human health.
