Abstract
A novel Bi2S3-zinc oxide/cellulose acetate composite film was prepared through a blending-wet phase conversion and in situ precipitate method. The results revealed that the incorporation of Bi2S3 in the film increased the cavity density and uniformity, which provided additional space for the growth of active species and improved the interaction between dye pollutants and active sites. Zinc oxide acted as a mediator to facilitate the separation of electron-hole pairs effectively preventing their recombination, thus reducing the photo-corrosion of Bi2S3. As a result, the Bi2S3-ZnO/CA composite film exhibited favorable photocatalytic activity in the degradation of various dyes. Additionally, the composite film displayed effortless separation and recovery without the need for centrifugation or filtration, while maintaining its exceptional catalytic performance even after undergoing various processes.

Abstract
A hydrothermal technique was employed to synthesize a Sr2Nb2O7-rGO-ZnO (SNRZ) ternary nanocatalyst, in which ZnO and Sr2Nb2O7 were deposited on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. The surface morphologies, optical properties, and chemical states, of the photocatalysts were characterized to understand their properties. The SNRZ ternary photocatalyst was superior over the reduction of Cr (VI) to harmless Cr (III) compared to the efficiencies obtained using bare, binary, and composite catalysts. The effects of various parameters, including the solution pH and weight ratio, on the photocatalytic reduction of Cr (VI) were investigated. The highest photocatalytic reduction performance (97.6%) was achieved at pH 4 and a reaction time of 70 min. Photoluminescence emission measurements were used to confirm efficient charge migration and separation across the SNRZ, which improved the reduction of Cr (VI). A feasible reduction mechanism for the SNRZ photocatalyst is proposed. This study presents an effective, inexpensive, non-toxic, and stable catalyst, for the reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) using SNRZ ternary nanocatalysts.

Abstract
The development of an efficient catalyst for the simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) from water is required to eliminate the risk of Cr(III) reconversion in the photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction process. ZnO with large regions of high-energy {001} and {101} surfaces is often used to degrade various pollutants due to its high activity. However, the more readily available low-energy facets have relatively limited its applications. Here, we report a new strategy that employs a high proportion of {100} plane-exposed ZnO nanosheets for simultaneous photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and Cr(III) adsorption. The mechanism of Zn-O co-exposed on the {100} plane as the dual-active centers to jointly promote Cr(VI) reduction and Cr(III) adsorption was clarified at the atomic level. ZnO nanosheets with a high exposure ratio of the {100} plane achieve a total Cr removal rate of over 90% within 120 min under simulated sunlight irradiation, neutral conditions, and a negligible difference in the band structure.

Abstract
In this world, water is considered as the Elixir for all living creatures. Human life rolls with water, and every activity depends upon water. Worldwide water resources are being contaminated due to the elevation in the population count, industrialization and urbanization. Ejection of chemicals by industries and domestic sewages remains the major reason in the destruction of natural water resources. Contaminated water with harmful microbes, chemical dyes, pesticides, and carcinogens are the root cause of many diseases and deaths of living species. In this scenario, researchers engaged in producing ultra components to remove the contaminants. Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are the desired combination of organic and inorganic materials to achieve the required target. MOFs possess unique characteristics like tunable internal structure, porosity, crystallinity and high surface area which enable them for energy and environmental application. For the past years, MOFs are concentrated more as a photocatalyst in the treatment of polluted water. These research studies discuss the improvement of photocatalytic performance of MOF by the incorporation of metals, metal coupled with nanoparticles like polymers, graphene, etc., into it to achieve the enhanced photocatalytic activity by scavenging entire chemicals and harmful microbes to retain the quality of water. The target of this review article is to focus on the state of the art research work on MOFs in photocatalytic water treatment technique.

Abstract
Bismuth sulfide quantum dots (Bi2S3 QDs), which have excellent optical and thermoelectric properties, represent a green and non-toxic semiconductor material that has been widely used in catalysis and photoelectric conversion devices. At present, research on this material has gradually expanded into the biological field. Herein, the biomineralization method mediated by bovine serum albumin (BSA) was utilized to synthesize Bi2S3 QDs with monodispersity, excellent colloidal stability, and good biocompatibility. This is the first study on the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) characteristics of Bi2S3 QDs and related ECL mechanisms in detail. In addition, on the basis of Bi2S3 QDs, an ECL immunosensor was used for the ultrasensitive measurement of cyclin D1 (CCND1). The composite material, namely Au@Cu-Bi2S3 QDs was used as a high-sensitivity ECL probe, in which AuNPs were connected with Bi2S3 QDs through a copper(ii) ion bridge. PDA-AgNPs made of dopamine (DA) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were utilized as a carrier for fixing the primary antibody (Ab1), ultimately presenting a relatively wide detection range of 10 fg mL-1-1 μg mL-1. Moreover, quite a low detection limit (6.34 fg mL-1) was also obtained for an assay of CCND1. Results indicated that the immunosensor can provide a potential platform with fine stability and creditable reproducibility for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
In our review we consider the results on the development and exploration of heterostructured photoactive materials with major attention focused on what are the better ways to form this type of materials and how to explore them correctly. Regardless of what type of heterostructure, metal–semiconductor or semiconductor–semiconductor, is formed, its functionality strongly depends on the quality of heterojunction. In turn, it depends on the selection of the heterostructure components (their chemical and physical properties) and on the proper choice of the synthesis method. Several examples of the different approaches such as in situ and ex situ, bottom-up and top-down, are reviewed. At the same time, even if the synthesis of heterostructured photoactive materials seems to be successful, strong experimental physical evidence demonstrating true heterojunction formation are required. A possibility for obtaining such evidence using different physical techniques is discussed. Particularly, it is demonstrated that the ability of optical spectroscopy to study heterostructured materials is in fact very limited. At the same time, such experimental techniques as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electrophysical methods (work function measurements and impedance spectroscopy) present a true signature of heterojunction formation. Therefore, whatever the purpose of heterostructure formation and studies is, the application of HRTEM and electrophysical methods is necessary to confirm that formation of the heterojunction was successful.

Abstract
For the first time, a novel BiPO4/Bi2S3 heterostructures with different morphologies have been fabricated through a facile and rapid one pot precipitation route followed by anion-exchange strategy for the photoreduction of toxic Cr(VI) to harmless Cr (III). The hybrid structures systematically investigated using XRD, FE-SEM, EDS, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, FT-IR, UV-vis DRS, and PL. Changing the solvent type has a significant role for controllable morphologies of BiPO4/Bi2S3 hybrid as well as the catalytic activity. The BiPO4/Bi2S3 hybrid synthesized in diethylene glycol (DEG) performed the highest reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) within 20 min, compared with pure hexagonal phase of BiPO4 under visible light. The rate constant for BiPO4/Bi2S3 synthesized in DEG found to be 20.3 times larger than that for pure BiPO4. In addition, the presence of tartaric acid as hole scavenger could enhance the Cr(VI) reduction efficiency to 97.9%. No significant decrease in the catalytic efficiency after recycling up to four cycles. This promising study could present a significant approach towards Cr(VI) photoreduction from water through the novel BiPO4/Bi2S3 photocatalyst.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped graphene/bismuth (NG/Bi) nanocomposites with different graphene contents were successfully assembled using a one-pot method. Detailed characterization of the as-synthesized samples, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence spectra (PL) and photoelectrochemical measurements was conducted. The results showed that nitrogen elements were introduced into the skeleton of graphene and Bi nanoparticles were irregularly distributed on the N-doped graphene nanosheets. The NG/Bi composites performed better photocatalytic NO removal activity than their counterparts under UV light illumination. The removal ratio of NO over 2%-NG/Bi was 49.5%, and the recycling activity after 5 runs was not significantly weakened. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was due to the synergistic effect of N-graphene, which not only elevated the absorption of light, but also accelerated the transfer of hot electrons generated by the SPR effect of Bi. Nitrogen-doped graphene/bismuth (NG/Bi) nanocomposites with different graphene contents were successfully assembled using a one-pot method.![]()

Abstract
Biomimetic/bioinspired engineering and sulfidation processes are effective strategies for improving the visible light-driven photocatalytic performance of ZnO photocatalysts. A facile electrodeposition process in high oxygen-flux conditions was used to synthesize well-defined fractal micro/nanoferns, consequently increasing the photocatalyst’s light-trapping capability and the accessible active surface. Next, a simple sulfidation process was used to form a thin layer of ZnS, producing ZnO@ZnS core@shell micro/nanoferns, thereby tuning the optoelectronic properties and extending the photoresponse to the visible region. The ZnO@ZnS micro/nanoferns exhibited clear superiority over other ZnO photocatalysts in the photooxidation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and the photoreduction of Cr(VI). Their excellent photocatalytic performance allowed the photodegradation under UV-filtered sunlight of nearly 97% of methylene blue after 60 min; the mineralization of >98% of a mixture of methylene blue, 4-nitrophenol, and rhodamine-B after 210 min; and the removal of nearly 65% of Cr(VI) after 180 min. In addition, the ZnO@ZnS micro/nanoferns demonstrated a good ability to decontaminate an inorganic-organic bipollutant system, with promising potential to leverage synergistic effects. Finally, these micro/nanoferns presented great recyclability and reusability for both photooxidation and photoremediation processes. These findings support that sulfidation and biomimetic engineering can be a superior route for designing efficient sunlight-driven ZnO-photocatalysts for water decontamination.

Abstract
Nano-TiO2 is known as a photocatalyst with high catalytic activity. However, it should be emphasized that the bandgap of nano-TiO2 is wide, which limits its photocatalytic efficiency in response to visible light and thus hinders its potential application. Improving the photocatalytic activity of nano-TiO2 under visible light by the strategy of heat treatment under vacuum was investigated in this study. The structure and photocatalytic activity of nano-TiO2 before and after heat treatment under vacuum were compared and analyzed by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, XPS and UV-Vis-NIR, respectively. The results show that oxygen vacancies were introduced into the crystal structure of nano-TiO2 to change its inherent energy band structure. Particularly, the samples after heat treatment under vacuum exhibited high photocatalytic activity under visible light. In addition, the formation mechanism of non-stoichiometric compound TiO2-x and the mechanism of oxygen vacancy defects to expand the wavelength of light that nano-TiO2 absorbs to the visible portion of the spectrum have also been addressed in this paper.
