Recent Advances in the 3D Printing of Conductive Hydrogels for Sensor Applications: A Review

Conductive hydrogels, known for their flexibility, biocompatibility, and conductivity, have found extensive applications in fields such as healthcare, environmental monitoring, and soft robotics. Recent advancements in 3D printing technologies have transformed the fabrication of conductive hydrogels, creating new opportunities for sensing applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in the fabrication and application of 3D-printed conductive hydrogel sensors. First, the basic principles and fabrication techniques of conductive hydrogels are briefly reviewed. We then explore various 3D printing methods for conductive hydrogels, discussing their respective strengths and limitations. The review also summarizes the applications of 3D-printed conductive hydrogel-based sensors. In addition, perspectives on 3D-printed conductive hydrogel sensors are highlighted. This review aims to equip researchers and engineers with insights into the current landscape of 3D-printed conductive hydrogel sensors and to inspire future innovations in this promising field.

Design and Application of Cu2+ Fluorescent Sensor Based on Carbazole Derivatives

A novel fluorescent sensor for the detection of Cu2+ was developed based on carbazole derivatives. After the addition of Cu2+, the sensor exhibited obvious fluorescence quenching phenomenon, and the optical signal variation also enabled the sensor to quantitatively analyze Cu2+ due to the formation of a stable 1:1 metal-ligand complex in a short time. In addition, the sensor possessed chemical reversibility and pH stability. The cell imaging and zebra fish experiments also verified its application value in biological system.

Stimuli-responsive thin film composites of conducting polymers and cellulose nanocrystals for tissue engineering

Thin composite films comprising two primary representatives of conducting polymers, poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polypyrrole (PPy), with eco-friendly cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were prepared through electrochemical polymerization. The combination of CNC and PEDOT (or PPy) results in the formation of films with highly different surface topography and thickness. Intriguingly, different surface conductivity of PEDOT and PPy was revealed by atomic force microscopy albeit that the electrochemical properties were rather similar. The biological properties of the composites in contact with prospective human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) and cardiomyocytes derived from hiPSC demonstrated good cytocompatibility of both composites and their potential in engineering of electro-sensitive tissues. The as-prepared conducting, eco-friendly and cytocompatible composites are thus promising candidates for biomedical applications where stimuli-responsivity is a crucial cell-instructive property.

E-Tattoos: Toward Functional but Imperceptible Interfacing with Human Skin

The human body continuously emits physiological and psychological information from head to toe. Wearable electronics capable of noninvasively and accurately digitizing this information without compromising user comfort or mobility have the potential to revolutionize telemedicine, mobile health, and both human-machine or human-metaverse interactions. However, state-of-the-art wearable electronics face limitations regarding wearability and functionality due to the mechanical incompatibility between conventional rigid, planar electronics and soft, curvy human skin surfaces. E-Tattoos, a unique type of wearable electronics, are defined by their ultrathin and skin-soft characteristics, which enable noninvasive and comfortable lamination on human skin surfaces without causing obstruction or even mechanical perception. This review article offers an exhaustive exploration of e-tattoos, accounting for their materials, structures, manufacturing processes, properties, functionalities, applications, and remaining challenges. We begin by summarizing the properties of human skin and their effects on signal transmission across the e-tattoo-skin interface. Following this is a discussion of the materials, structural designs, manufacturing, and skin attachment processes of e-tattoos. We classify e-tattoo functionalities into electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and chemical sensing, as well as wound healing and other treatments. After discussing energy harvesting and storage capabilities, we outline strategies for the system integration of wireless e-tattoos. In the end, we offer personal perspectives on the remaining challenges and future opportunities in the field.

Edge sulfur vacancies riched MoS2 nanosheets assist PEDOT:PSS flexible film ammonia sensing enhancement for wireless greenhouse vegetables monitoring

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is a promising NH3 sensing material owing to its super high electrical conductivity, excellent environmental stability, and reversible doping/dedoping nature. However, the low sensitivity and sluggish recovery rate limit its further application in gas sensors. Herein, exfoliated layered MoS2 nanosheets with large-specific surface area and abundant edge sulfur (S) vacancies are utilized to assist PEDOT:PSS and achieve ideal improvement in NH3 sensing performance at room temperature (RT), including high response values, fast response/recovery ability, and excellent sensing stability in complex environment. MoS2 nanosheets are combined with PEDOT:PSS to construct p-n heterojunction, the S vacancies can improve carrier transfer rate and serve as conductive bridge, effective active sites for NH3 adsorption, this series of performance improvement strategies is the significance of this work. Meanwhile, the density-functional theory (DFT), current-voltage (I-V), and in-situ FITR are firstly employed to discuss the sensing mechanisms in detail. Furthermore, integrating MoS2/PEDOT:PSS flexible sensor into a designed printed circuit board to intelligent, visual, and wireless real-time monitoring the NH3 resistance information in a simulated greenhouse vegetables equipment through the smartphone APP has also been successfully implemented.

Electrochemical detection of redox molecules secreted by Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Part 2: Enhanced detection owing to PEDOT:PSS electrode structuration

Fast bacterial detection and identification is a crucial challenge in order to improve our antibiotics use and reduce the antimicrobial resistance. Electroanalysis of biological fluids is cheap and can be done in situ but the electrode material needs to be perfectly chosen. We previously studied electrochemical signature of Pseudomonas aeruginosa's secretome, thanks to glassy carbon electrode. Some conductive polymers are particularly efficient for biological use because of their antifouling properties, biocompatibility and way of processing. In this paper, we described the fabrication, characterization and utilisation of PEDOT:PSS film to detect and identify Pseudomonas aeruginosa through three of its secreted molecules: pyocyanin, Pseudomonas quinolone PQS and 2'-aminoacetophenone. The electrochemical responses, clearly amplified by PEDOT:PSS, can be used to identify these bacteria quickly and efficiently.

Ultrasonic Spray Coating to Optimize Performance of Bio-Electrochemical Systems

This work investigates the optimization of carbon-based electrodes employed in bio-electrochemical systems (BES) through the deposition of nanostructured layers of poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxy-thiophene) poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) on commercial carbon paper electrodes via ultrasonic spray coating (USC). This innovative application of USC demonstrated that uniform and controlled depositions of PEDOT:PSS can be successfully performed on carbon-based electrodes. To this end, the morphology and spatial uniformity of depositions were verified via scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical characterizations of fabricated electrodes demonstrated a more than two-fold increase in the electrochemical active surface area with respect to bare carbon paper. A lab-scale experiment on BES was performed, selecting microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as the reference devices. Devices featuring USC-deposited PEDOT:PSS electrodes showed a three-fold-higher energy recovery with respect to control cells, reaching a maximum value of (13 ± 2) J·m-3. Furthermore, the amount of PEDOT:PSS required to optimize MFCs' performance is in line with values reported in the literature for other deposition methods. In conclusion, this work demonstrates that USC is a promising technique for application in BES.

Advancements in tailoring PEDOT: PSS properties for bioelectronic applications: A comprehensive review

In the field of bioelectronics, the demand for biocompatible, stable, and electroactive materials for functional biological interfaces, sensors, and stimulators, is drastically increasing. Conductive polymers (CPs) are synthetic materials, which are gaining increasing interest mainly due to their outstanding electrical, chemical, mechanical, and optical properties. Since its discovery in the late 1980s, the CP Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) has become extremely attractive, being considered as one of the most capable organic electrode materials for several bioelectronic applications in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Main examples refer to thin, flexible films, electrodes, hydrogels, scaffolds, and biosensors. Within this context, the authors contend that PEDOT:PSS properties should be customized to encompass: i) biocompatibility, ii) conductivity, iii) stability in wet environment, iv) adhesion to the substrate, and, when necessary, v) (bio-)degradability. However, consolidating all these properties into a single functional solution is not always straightforward. Therefore, the objective of this review paper is to present various methods for acquiring and improving PEDOT:PSS properties, with the primary focus on ensuring its biocompatibility, and simultaneously addressing the other functional features. The last section highlights a collection of designated studies, with a particular emphasis on PEDOT:PSS/carbon filler composites due to their exceptional characteristics.

PEDOT Films Doped with Titanyl Oxalate as Chemiresistive and Colorimetric Dual-Mode Sensors for the Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is commonly used as an oxidizing, bleaching, or antiseptic agent. It is also hazardous at increased concentrations. It is therefore crucial to monitor the presence and concentration of H₂O₂, particularly in the vapor phase. However, it remains a challenge for many state-of-the-art chemical sensors (e.g., metal oxides) to detect hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) because of the interference of moisture in the form of humidity. Moisture, in the form of humidity, is guaranteed to be present in HPV to some extent. To meet this challenge, herein, we report a novel composite material based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) doped with ammonium titanyl oxalate (ATO). This material can be fabricated as a thin film on electrode substrates for use in chemiresistive sensing of HPV. The adsorbed H₂O₂ will react with ATO, causing a colorimetric response in the material body. Combining colorimetric and chemiresistive responses resulted in a more reliable dual-function sensing method that improved the selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, the composite film of PEDOT:PSS-ATO could be coated with a layer of pure PEDOT via in situ electrochemical synthesis. The pure PEDOT layer was hydrophobic, shielding the sensor material underneath from coming into contact with moisture. This was shown to mitigate the interference of humidity when detecting H₂O₂. A combination of these material properties makes the double-layer composite film, namely PEDOT:PSS-ATO/PEDOT, an ideal sensor platform for the detection of HPV. For example, upon a 9 min exposure to HPV at a concentration of 1.9 ppm, the electrical resistance of the film increased threefold, surpassing the bounds of the safety threshold. Meanwhile, the colorimetric response observed was 2.55 (defined as the color change ratio), a ratio at which the color change could be easily seen by the naked eye and quantified. We expect that this reported dual-mode sensor will find extensive practical applications in the fields of health and security with real-time, onsite monitoring of HPV.

All-solid-state potentiometric salicylic acid sensor for in-situ measurement of plant

Using PEDOT as the conductive polymer, an innovative small-scale sensor for directly measuring salicylate ions in plants was developed, which avoided the complicated sample pretreatment of traditional analytical methods and realized the rapid detection of salicylic acid. The results demonstrate that this all-solid-state potentiometric salicylic acid sensor is easy to miniaturize, has a longer lifetime (≥1 month), is more robust, and can be directly used for the detection of salicylate ions in real samples without any additional pretreatment. The developed sensor has a good Nernst slope (63.6 ± 0.7 mV/decade), the linear range is 10^-2 ~ 10^-6 M, and the detection limit can reach (2.8 × 10^-7 M). The selectivity, reproducibility, and stability of the sensor were evaluated. The sensor can perform stable, sensitive, and accurate in situ measurement of salicylic acid in plants, and it is an excellent tool for determining salicylic acid ions in plants in vivo.

Organic Bioelectronics Development in Italy: A Review

In recent years, studies concerning Organic Bioelectronics have had a constant growth due to the interest in disciplines such as medicine, biology and food safety in connecting the digital world with the biological one. Specific interests can be found in organic neuromorphic devices and organic transistor sensors, which are rapidly growing due to their low cost, high sensitivity and biocompatibility. This trend is evident in the literature produced in Italy, which is full of breakthrough papers concerning organic transistors-based sensors and organic neuromorphic devices. Therefore, this review focuses on analyzing the Italian production in this field, its trend and possible future evolutions.

Analytical Applicability of Graphene-Modified Electrode in Sunset Yellow Electrochemical Assay

Due to the recent increase in average living standards, food safety has caught public attention. It is necessary to conduct a qualitative and quantitative rapid test of prohibited food additives since the inclusion of food additives or the improper usage of synthetic dyes can negatively impact on the human health. Herein, a highly sensitive method for Sunset Yellow detection based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with few-layer graphenes was proposed. The electrochemical behavior of SY at the GR-exf/GCE modified surface was investigated by Cyclic Voltammetry, Square Wave Voltammetry, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Amperometry. The influences of pH, scan rate, and interfering species were studied. Under optimized conditions, the developed sensor shows good linearity over a broad SY concentration range, e.g., 0.028-30 µM, with a low limit of detection (LOD = 0.0085 µM) and quantification (LOQ = 0.028 µM) (data obtained by amperometric technique). Furthermore, the modified electrode shows good selectivity, precision and sensitivity and has been successfully applied for SY quantification from commercially available pharmaceutical formulation as well as from candy bars and orange juice.

Self-Healing, Flexible and Smart 3D Hydrogel Electrolytes Based on Alginate/PEDOT:PSS for Supercapacitor Applications

Hydrogel electrolytes for energy storage devices have made great progress, yet they present a major challenge in the assembly of flexible supercapacitors with high ionic conductivity and self-healing properties. Herein, a smart self-healing hydrogel electrolyte based on alginate/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (alginate/PEDOT:PSS)(A/P:P) was prepared, wherein H₂SO₄ was employed as a polymeric initiator, as well as a source of ions. PEDOT:PSS is a semi-interpenetrating network (IPN) that has been used in recent studies to exhibit quick self-healing properties with the H₂SO₃ additive, which further improves its mechanical strength and self-healing performance. A moderate amount of PEDOT:PSS in the hydrogel (5 mL) was found to significantly improve the ionic conductivity compared to the pure hydrogel of alginate. Interestingly, the alginate/PEDOT:PSS composite hydrogel exhibited an excellent ability to self-heal and repair its original composition within 10 min of cutting. Furthermore, the graphite conductive substrate-based supercapacitor with the alginate/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel electrolyte provided a high specific capacitance of 356 F g^-1 at 100 mV/s g^-1. The results demonstrate that the A/P:P ratio with 5 mL PEDOT:PSS had a base sheet resistance of 0.9 Ω/square. This work provides a new strategy for designing flexible self-healing hydrogels for application in smart wearable electronics.

Consecutive Ink Writing of Conducting Polymer and Graphene Composite Electrodes for Foldable Electronics-Related Applications

For foldable electronic devices of the future, most components should have very good flexibility and reliability to maintain electrical properties even under repeated deformation. In this study, two types of inks for conducting polymer and graphene were simultaneously printed on flexible plastic substrates via the newly developed consecutive ink writing (CIW) process for the formation of composite electrodes of foldable electronic devices. To consecutively print conducting polymer ink and graphene ink, a conventional three-dimensional (3D) printer was modified by installing two needles in the printer head, and the two inks were printed through the nozzle in the same route with a time interval. By adjusting several printing conditions (ink concentration, printing parameters, printing time intervals between the two inks, etc.), various structures of composite electrodes, such as layered or fused 2D or 3D structures were developed on the glass substrate. Furthermore, by changing the printing order of the two inks and 3D printer bed temperature, the composite electrodes with a higher printing resolution were successfully printed on the flexible polyimide substrate. The printed composite electrodes via CIW process exhibit the lowest surface electrical resistance of 0.9 kΩ and high flexibility, and stable resistance values were maintained after 1000 cycles of the folding test. Consequently, the CIW process developed in this study applies to the production of the electrical parts and components for various flexible devices, such as foldable and wearable electronics.

Recent Advances in Graphene-Based Nanocomposites for Ammonia Detection

The increasing demand to mitigate the alarming effects of the emission of ammonia (NH3) on human health and the environment has highlighted the growing attention to the design of reliable and effective sensing technologies using novel materials and unique nanocomposites with tunable functionalities. Among the state-of-the-art ammonia detection materials, graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites have gained significant attention. Despite the ever-increasing number of publications on graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection, various understandings and information regarding the process, mechanisms, and new material components have not been fully explored. Therefore, this review summarises the recent progress of graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection. A comprehensive discussion is provided on the various gas sensor designs, including chemiresistive, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM), and Field-Effect Transistor (FET), as well as gas sensors utilising the graphene-based polymer nanocomposites, in addition to highlighting the pros and cons of graphene to enhance the performance of gas sensors. Moreover, the various techniques used to fabricate graphene-based nanocomposites and the numerous polymer electrolytes (e.g., conductive polymeric electrolytes), the ion transport models, and the fabrication and detection mechanisms of ammonia are critically addressed. Finally, a brief outlook on the significant progress, future opportunities, and challenges of graphene-based polymer nanocomposites for the application of ammonia detection are presented.

Sialic acid biosensing by post-printing modification of PEDOT:PSS with pyridylboronic acid

A poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based conducting polymer, which has biorecognition capabilities, has promising biosensing applications. Previously, we developed a facile method for post-printing chemical modification of PEDOT:PSS thin films from commercial sources. Molecular recognition elements were directly introduced into the PSS side chain by a two-step chemical reaction: introduction of an ethylenediamine linker via an acid chloride reaction of the sulfonate moiety, and subsequent receptor attachment to the linker via amine coupling. In this study, the same method was used to introduce 6-carboxypyridine-3-boronic acid (carboxy-PyBA) into the linker for specifically detecting N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid, SA), as a cancer biomarker. The surface-modified PEDOT:PSS films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and static water contact angle and conductivity measurements. The specific interaction between PyBA and SA was detected by label-free reagent-free potentiometry. The SA-specific negative potential responses of modified PEDOT:PSS electrodes, which was ascribed to an SA carboxyl anion, were observed in a physiologically relevant SA range (1.6-2.9 mM) at pH 5, in a concentration-dependent manner even in the presence of 10% fetal bovine serum. The sensitivity was -2.9 mV/mM in 1-5 mM SA with a limit of detection of 0.7 mM. The sensing performances were almost equivalent to those of existing graphene-based electrical SA sensors. These results show that our chemical derivatization method for printing PEDOT:PSS thin films will have applications in SA clinical diagnostics.

Advances in Nanomaterial-Based Biosensors for Determination of Glycated Hemoglobin

Diabetes is a major public health burden whose prevalence has been steadily increasing over the past decades. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is currently the gold standard for diagnostics and monitoring glycemic control in diabetes patients. HbA1c biosensors are often considered to be cost-effective alternatives for smaller testing laboratories or clinics unable to access other reference methods. Many of these sensors deploy nanomaterials as recognition elements, detection labels, and/or transducers for achieving sensitive and selective detection of HbA1c. Nanomaterials have emerged as important sensor components due to their excellent optical and electrical properties, tunable morphologies, and easy integration into multiple sensing platforms. In this review, we discuss the advantages of using nanomaterials to construct HbA1c sensors and various sensing strategies for HbA1c measurements. Key gaps between the current technologies with what is needed moving forward are also summarized.

Texturing of nanocoatings for surface acoustic wave-based sensors for volatile organic compounds

An approach for texturing of gas-sensitive nanocoatings by using surface acoustic waves (SAW) is presented in this article. The objective of the work is to enhance the performance of precise SAW-based gas sensors due to the increased specific area of the sensitive nanocoating, induced during its growth and to replace the expensive lithographic techniques for nanopatterning, typically used for this purpose. The technique can be used for tuneable alignment of nanoparticles or nanowires and it is scale-independent. To control the texture of the sensitive nanocoating, a specific electrode topology was used to generate waves with a specific space distribution, which in turn caused assembling of the nanoparticles increasing the adsorption capacity. In this way, a broader dynamic range of 7,000 ppm was achieved (three times extended as compared to the non-textured sensing film), measurement error of 0.6% against 4% for the non-patterned, faster response time in the sub-seconds range (970 ms vs 1.1 s), negligible hysteresis of 10 mV (against >100 mV), and very good sensitivity of 5 µV per ppm, which are in line with the current standards for ethanol sensors. The enhanced sensor parameters were achieved by implementation of conventional patterning technologies without the need for nanolithographic techniques for the texturing the nanocoating. The method is low-cost, and applicable in a variety of sensing structures despite the sensing coating (optical, biological, etc.).

High-Performance Room-Temperature Conductometric Gas Sensors: Materials and Strategies

Chemiresistive sensors have gained increasing interest in recent years due to the necessity of low-cost, effective, high-performance gas sensors to detect volatile organic compounds (VOC) and other harmful pollutants. While most of the gas sensing technologies rely on the use of high operation temperatures, which increase usage cost and decrease efficiency due to high power consumption, a particular subset of gas sensors can operate at room temperature (RT). Current approaches are aimed at the development of high-sensitivity and multiple-selectivity room-temperature sensors, where substantial research efforts have been conducted. However, fewer studies presents the specific mechanism of action on why those particular materials can work at room temperature and how to both enhance and optimize their RT performance. Herein, we present strategies to achieve RT gas sensing for various materials, such as metals and metal oxides (MOs), as well as some of the most promising candidates, such as polymers and hybrid composites. Finally, the future promising outlook on this technology is discussed.

Perchlorate Solid-Contact Ion-Selective Electrode Based on Dodecabenzylbambus[6]uril

Dodecabenzylbambus[6]uril (Bn12BU[6]) is an anion receptor that binds the perchlorate ion the most tightly (stability constant ~1010 M−1) of all anions due to the excellent match between the ion size in relation to the receptor cavity. This new bambusuril compound was used as an ionophore in the ion-selective membrane (ISM) to develop ion selective electrodes (ISEs) for determination of perchlorate concentration utilizing the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) polymer film as a solid-contact material. Variation of the content of Bn12BU[6] and tridodecylmethylammonium chloride (TDMACl) in the plasticized poly(vinyl chloride)-based ISM was also tested. All the prepared solid-contact ISEs and their analytical performance were characterized by potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronopotentiometry. The ISEs showed rapid response and a sub-Nernstian slope (~57 mV/decade) during potentiometric measurements in perchlorate solutions in the concentration range from 10−1 to 10−6 M simultaneously with their high stability and sufficient selectivity to other common inorganic anions like bromide, chloride, nitrate and sulphate. The function of the ISE was further verified by analysis of real water samples (lake, sea, and mineral water), which gave accurate and precise results.

Impedimetric Chemosensing of Volatile Organic Compounds Released from Li-Ion Batteries

Detection of toxic and flammable gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from Li-ion batteries during thermal runaway can generate an early warning. A submicron (∼0.15 μm)-thick poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) sensor film is coated on a platinum electrode through a facile aqueous dispersion. The resulting sensor reliably detected different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during the early stages of thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) even at low concentrations. The single-electrode sensor utilizes impedance spectroscopy to measure ethyl methyl carbonate and methyl formate concentrations at 5, 15, and 30 ppm independently and in various combinations using ethanol as a reference. In contrast to DC resistance measurement, which provides a single parameter, impedance spectroscopy provides a wealth of information, including impedance and phase angle at multiple frequencies as well as fitted charge transfer resistance and constant-phase elements. Different analytes influence the measurement of different parameters to varying degrees, enabling distinction using a single sensing material. The response time for ethyl methyl carbonate was measured to be 6 s. Three principal components (PCs) preserve more than 95% of information and efficiently enable discrimination of different classes of analytes. Application of low-power PEDOT:PSS-based gas sensors will facilitate cost-effective early detection of VOCs and provide early warning to battery management systems (BMS), potentially mitigating catastrophic thermal runaway events.

A novel quinoline derivative as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for Fe3+ detection

In this research, a novel selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for detecting Fe³⁺ was designed and synthesized; it revealed an obvious fluorescence quenching effect upon addition of Fe³⁺, and possessed the quantitative analysis ability on account of the formation of a 1 : 1 metal–ligand complex. Furthermore, the density functional theory calculations were utilized to study the molecular orbitals as well as the spatial structure. Simultaneously, the cell experiments and zebra fish experiments verified the application value of the sensor in the biological field.

Review of Materials and Fabrication Methods for Flexible Nano and Micro-Scale Physical and Chemical Property Sensors

The use of flexible sensors has tripled over the last decade due to the increased demand in various fields including health monitoring, food packaging, electronic skins and soft robotics. Flexible sensors have the ability to be bent and stretched during use and can still maintain their electrical and mechanical properties. This gives them an advantage over rigid sensors that lose their sensitivity when subject to bending. Advancements in 3D printing have enabled the development of tailored flexible sensors. Various additive manufacturing methods are being used to develop these sensors including inkjet printing, aerosol jet printing, fused deposition modelling, direct ink writing, selective laser melting and others. Hydrogels have gained much attention in the literature due to their self-healing and shape transforming. Self-healing enables the sensor to recover from damages such as cracks and cuts incurred during use, and this enables the sensor to have a longer operating life and stability. Various polymers are used as substrates on which the sensing material is placed. Polymers including polydimethylsiloxane, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and polyvinyl acetate are extensively used in flexible sensors. The most widely used nanomaterials in flexible sensors are carbon and silver due to their excellent electrical properties. This review gives an overview of various types of flexible sensors (including temperature, pressure and chemical sensors), paying particular attention to the application areas and the corresponding characteristics/properties of interest required for such. Current advances/trends in the field including 3D printing, novel nanomaterials and responsive polymers, and self-healable sensors and wearables will also be discussed in more detail.

Functionalization Strategies of PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS Films for Organic Bioelectronics Applications

Organic bioelectronics involves the connection of organic semiconductors with living organisms, organs, tissues, cells, membranes, proteins, and even small molecules. In recent years, this field has received great interest due to the development of all kinds of devices architectures, enabling the detection of several relevant biomarkers, the stimulation and sensing of cells and tissues, and the recording of electrophysiological signals, among others. In this review, we discuss recent functionalization approaches for PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS films with the aim of integrating biomolecules for the fabrication of bioelectronics platforms. As the choice of the strategy is determined by the conducting polymer synthesis method, initially PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS films preparation methods are presented. Later, a wide variety of PEDOT functionalization approaches are discussed, together with bioconjugation techniques to develop efficient organic-biological interfaces. Finally, and by making use of these approaches, the fabrication of different platforms towards organic bioelectronics devices is reviewed.
