Abstract
Winter crops acquire frost tolerance during the process of cold acclimation when plants are exposed to low but non-freezing temperatures that is connected to specific metabolic adjustments. Warm breaks during/after cold acclimation disturb the natural process of acclimation, thereby decreasing frost tolerance and can even result in a resumption of growth. This phenomenon is called deacclimation. In the last few years, studies that are devoted to deacclimation have become more important (due to climate changes) and necessary to be able to understand the mechanisms that occur during this phenomenon. In the acclimation of plants to low temperatures, the importance of plant membranes is indisputable; that is why the main aim of our studies was to answer the question of whether (and to what extent) deacclimation alters the physicochemical properties of the plant membranes. The studies were focused on chloroplast membranes from non-acclimated, cold-acclimated and deacclimated cultivars of winter oilseed rape. The analysis of the membranes (formed from chloroplast lipid fractions) using the Langmuir technique revealed that cold acclimation increased membrane fluidity (expressed as the Alim values), while deacclimation generally decreased the values that were induced by cold. Moreover, because the chloroplast membranes were penetrated by lipophilic molecules such as carotenoids or tocopherols, the relationships between the structure of the lipids and the content of these antioxidants in the chloroplast membranes during the process of the cold acclimation and deacclimation of oilseed rape are discussed.

Abstract
Increased impetus on the application of nano-fertilizers to improve sustainable food production warrants understanding of nanophytotoxicity and its underlying mechanisms before its application could be fully realized. In this study, we evaluated the potential particle size-dependent effects of soil-applied copper oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) on crop yield and quality attributes (photosynthetic pigments, seed yield and nutrient quality, seed protein, and seed oil), including root and seed Cu bioaccumulation and a suite of oxidative stress biomarkers, in soybean (Glycine max L.) grown in field environment. We synthesized three distinct sized (25 nm = S [small], 50 nm = M [medium], and 250 nm = L [large]) nCuO with same surface charge and compared with soluble Cu2+ ions (CuCl2) and water-only controls. Results showed particle size-dependent effects of nCuO on the photosynthetic pigments (Chla and Chlb), seed yield, potassium and phosphorus accumulation in seed, and protein and oil yields, with nCuO-S showing higher inhibitory effects. Further, increased root and seed Cu bioaccumulation led to concomitant increase in oxidative stress (H2O2, MDA), and as a response, several antioxidants (SOD, CAT, POX, and APX) increased proportionally, with nCuO treatments including Cu2+ ion treatment. These results are corroborated with TEM ultrastructure analysis showing altered seed oil bodies and protein storage vacuoles with nCuO-S treatment compared to control. Taken together, we propose particle size-dependent Cu bioaccumulation-mediated oxidative stress as a mechanism of nCuO toxicity. Future research investigating the potential fate of varied size nCuO, with a focus on speciation at the soil-root interface, within the root, and edible parts such as seed, will guide health risk assessment of nCuO.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE Abscisic acid could regulate structural genes in the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway and alleviate the decrease of carotenoids in maize seedlings under low-temperature stress. Low temperature often hampers the development of maize seedlings and hinders the accumulation of carotenoids, which are functional against chilling stress for plants and providing health benefits for human. To explore effective approaches in reducing chilling stress and enhancing the potential nutritional values of maize seedlings, exogenous plant hormones abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA) that may affect carotenoid biosynthesis were applied on low-temperature-stressed maize seedlings. Results showed that low temperature significantly reduced the carotenoid levels in maize seedlings, only preserving 62.8% in comparison to the control. The applied ABA probably interacted with the ABA-responsive cis-acting elements (ABREs) in the promoter regions of PSY3, ZDS and CHYB and activated their expressions. Consequently, the total carotenoid concentration was apparently increased to 1121 ± 47 ng·g-1 fresh weight (FW), indicating the stress alleviation by ABA. The application of SA did not yield positive results in alleviating chilling stress in maize seedlings. However, neoxanthin content could be notably boosted to 52.12 ± 0.45 ng·g-1 FW by SA, offering a biofortification strategy for specific nutritional enhancement. Structural gene PSY1 demonstrated positive correlations with β-carotene and zeaxanthin (r = 0.93 and 0.89), while CRTISO was correlated with total carotenoids (r = 0.92), indicating their critical roles in carotenoid accumulation. The present study exhibited the effectiveness of ABA to mitigate chilling stress and improve the potential nutritional values in low-temperature-stressed maize seedlings, thereby promoting the production of plant-based food sources.

Abstract
The effect of γ-Aminobutyrate (GABA) on maize seedlings under saline stress conditions has not been well tested in previous literature. Maize seedlings were subjected to two saline water concentrations (50 and 100 mM NaCl), with distilled water as the control. Maize seedlings under saline and control conditions were sprayed with GABA at two concentrations (0.5 and 1 mM). Our results indicated that GABA application (1 mM) significantly enhanced plant growth parameters (fresh shoots and fresh roots by 80.43% and 47.13%, respectively) and leaf pigments (chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll by 22.88%, 56.80%, and 36.21%, respectively) compared to untreated seedlings under the highest saline level. Additionally, under 100 mM NaCl, methylglyoxal (MG), malondialdehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxidase (H2O2) were reduced by 1 mM GABA application by 43.66%, 33.40%, and 35.98%, respectively. Moreover, maize seedlings that were treated with 1 mM GABA contained a lower Na content (22.04%) and a higher K content (60.06%), compared to the control under 100 mM NaCl. Peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities were improved (24.62%, 15.98%, 62.13%, and 70.07%, respectively) by the highest GABA rate, under the highest stress level. Seedlings treated with GABA under saline conditions showed higher levels of expression of the potassium transporter protein (ZmHKT1) gene, and lower expression of the ZmSOS1 and ZmNHX1 genes, compared to untreated seedlings. In conclusion, GABA application as a foliar treatment could be a promising strategy to mitigate salinity stress in maize plants.

Abstract
Melatonin (MT) is an important biologically active hormone that plays a vital role in plant growth and development. In particular, it has been investigated for its roles in abiotic stress management. In this study, pepper seedlings were subjected to low-temperature combined with low-light stress (LL) (15/5°C, 100 μmol m-2s-1) prior to a foliar spray of 200mM MT for 168h to investigate the protective role of MT in pepper seedlings. Our results demonstrated that LL stress negatively affected root growth, and accelerated the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including H2O2 and O 2 - , changed the osmolytes contents, and antioxidative system. However, these were reversed by exogenous MT application. MT effectively promoted the root growth as indicated by significant increase in root length, surface area, root volume, tips, forks, and crossings. In addition, MT reduced the burst of ROS and MDA contents induced by LL, enhanced the activities of SOD, CAT, POD, APX, DHAR, and MDHAR resulted by upregulated expressions of CaSOD, CaPOD, CaCAT, CaAPX, CaDHAR, and CaMDHAR, and elevated the contents of AsA and GSH, declined DHA and GSSH contents, which prevented membrane lipid peroxidation and protected plants from oxidative damages under LL stress. Furthermore, seedlings treated with MT released high contents of soluble sugar and soluble protein in leave, which might enhance LL tolerance by maintaining substance biosynthesis and maintaining cellular homeostasis resulted by high levels of osmolytes and carbohydrate in the cytosol. Our current findings confirmed the mitigating potential of MT application for LL stress by promoting pepper root growth, improving antioxidative defense system, ascorbate-glutathione cycle, and osmotic adjustment.
