Students’ Mathematics Anxiety at Distance and In-Person Learning Conditions during COVID-19 Pandemic: Are There Any Differences? An Exploratory Study

CONTEXT AND PROBLEM

The COVID-19 pandemic led to temporary closures of schools in Germany that were unpredictable, either short-term or sustained over many weeks depending on local COVID-19 incidence rates which varied in different regions over time. The COVID-19 pandemic created new stressors in schools to deliver the curriculum with reduced lessons and online teaching. COVID-19 also had a marked effect on research in schools.

AIM

The INSIDE project is a nationwide German study that investigates the effects of inclusive schooling in secondary education. The data collection started in 2018 and is still ongoing. During the COVID-19 pandemic the drop-out of many schools lead to a sample attrition down to 39.3 % of the original sample. It is investigated whether imputation of missing values in the dependent variables school grades (N = 2999) produces different results than listwise deletion of cases (N = 383).

HYPOTHESIS

It is hypothesized that missing data in the longitudinal data design were not missing at random (NMAR). It is further hypothesized based on previous research that in the larger, imputed sample, Math grades will deteriorate more than German grades.

RESULTS

Two datasets with observed, respectively, imputed data showed no difference in parents' educational attainment and gender proportion. Larger integrative schools were less likely to drop out than smaller single type schools. Pupils of 'surviving' schools showed equivalent grades for German and Mathematics, while including predicted grades of pupils in 'stressed' drop-out schools showed a decline in Mathematics but not in German subject grades.

Investigating links between creativity anxiety, creative performance, and state-level anxiety and effort during creative thinking

Identifying ways to enable people to reach their creative potential is a core goal of creativity research with implications for education and professional attainment. Recently, we identified a potential barrier to creative achievement: creativity anxiety (i.e., anxiety specific to creative thinking). Initial work found that creativity anxiety is associated with fewer real-world creative achievements. However, the more proximal impacts of creativity anxiety remain unexplored. In particular, understanding how to overcome creativity anxiety requires understanding how creativity anxiety may or may not impact creative cognitive performance, and how it may relate to state-level anxiety and effort while completing creative tasks. The present study sought to address this gap by measuring creativity anxiety alongside several measures of creative performance, while concurrently surveying state-level anxiety and effort. Results indicated that creativity anxiety was, indeed, predictive of poor creative performance, but only on some of the tasks included. We also found that creativity anxiety predicted both state anxiety and effort during creative performance. Interestingly, state anxiety and effort did not explain the associations between creativity anxiety and creative performance. Together, this work suggests that creativity anxiety can often be overcome in the performance of creative tasks, but likewise points to increased state anxiety and effort as factors that may make creative performance and achievement fragile in more demanding real-world contexts.

Nutritional changes during the COVID-19 pandemic: a rapid scoping review on the impact of psychological factors

COVID-19 and the resulting measures to curb the spread of the virus have significantly changed our lives, including our nutritional choices. In this rapid scoping review an overview is provided of what psychological factors may be associated with peoples' eating behaviour during COVID-19 restrictions. Relevant literature was identified using PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL and MEDLINE databases from 2019 onwards. For included studies, information on study characteristics, eating behaviours, and psychological factors were extracted. 118 articles were included, representing 30 countries. Findings indicated that most people consumed more and unhealthy food in times of COVID-19 restrictions, while some consumed less but often for the wrong reasons. Several psychological factors, related to (1) affective reactions, (2) anxiety, fear and worriers, (3) stress and (4) subjective and mental wellbeing were found to be associated with this increase in food consumption. These outcomes may help to be better inform future interventions, and with that, to be better prepared in case of future lockdown scenarios.

Professional quality of life and psychopathological symptoms among first-line healthcare workers facing COVID-19 pandemic: an exploratory study in an Italian southern hospital

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the mental health of healthcare workers, who have taken on the major problems triggered by the emergency. The mental consequences concern high levels of insomnia, anxiety, depression and burnout, which inevitably affect their professional quality of life too.

Objective

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between psychopathological symptoms (tested with the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, DASS-21) and professional quality of life (measured with the Professional Quality of Life Scale, ProQol) in a hospital of southern Italy.

Methods

204 healthcare workers were recruited by non-probabilistic sampling and divided by age, gender, work roles (physicians, nurses and intermediate care technicians) and clinical departments (Cardio-medicine, Infectious Diseases, Emergency Medicine, First Aid, Obstetrics and Pneumology).

Results

The results showed higher levels of Secondary Traumatic Stress, Depression, Anxiety and Stress in women than in men. Physicians and nurses experienced lower levels of Compassion Satisfaction but higher Burnout than intermediate care technicians; likewise, nurses were more anxious than physicians. The Emergency Medicine had higher scores in Compassion Satisfaction than Infectious Disease, Pneumology, Obstetrics and Cardio-Medicine.

Conclusion

In light of what has been said so far, it appears essential to intervene on the first mild signs of Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress, because they precede the onset of Depression, Stress and Anxiety in healthcare workers.

Proposal for the Analysis of the State of Learning in University Students with the Inclusion of ICT in the Classroom

The inclusion of information and communication technologies in education has become a priority for all universities. To meet this need, there are several research works that have dealt with the subject for several decades. However, for its inclusion, the analysis of each institution is necessary since the needs of the university population and the resources for its application change according to each situation. This work seeks to create a method that allows establishing the needs and doubts of students about the use of educational technologies in the classroom without affecting their performance. For this, a process has been designed that identifies learning needs, through the validation of data obtained from surveys and the monitoring of the academic efficiency and learning of a cohort of students. The follow-up includes a period of four years from 2019 to 2022. This follow-up allowed establishing three different realities, in 2019 the academic data was analyzed in a face-to-face education model, from 2020 to 2021 the follow-up was included in a remote model with the use of technologies as a communication channel and in 2022 these were included as a learning component, which marked an in-depth analysis of student performance and how technology affected their learning.
