Enhancing Biochemical Methane Potential and Enrichment of Specific Electroactive Communities from Nixtamalization Wastewater using Granular Activated Carbon as a Conductive Material

Navigating the waters of nixtamalization: Sustainable solutions for maize-processing wastewater treatment

Maize-processing wastewater, also known as nejayote, does represent a widespread residue originating from both small- and large-scale factories that produce maize-based products using the alkaline maize-cooking process (nixtamalization). Nejayote is a high-strength wastewater containing significant concentrations of soluble and insoluble organic and inorganic compounds resulting from the disintegration of maize, as well as from the substantial quantity of lime (Ca(OH)2) used in the process. In order to make nixtamalization more sustainable in terms of water usage and to mitigate the health and environmental issues related to nejayote discharges into environmental matrices and public sewage systems, appropriate and effective treatment processes must be applied either before effluent disposal or for water reuse purposes. With this problematic as the central topic, we conducted a comprehensive review of relevant literature addressing this issue spanning from the mid-1980s to the present day. This review covers three primary aspects: i) the extensive variability observed in the physicochemical composition of maize-processing wastewater, ii) the various biological and physicochemical methods developed for its treatment, and iii) the potential for organic and mineral resource recovery from this waste. Although initial efforts to treat nejayote were left behind for decades, recent years have witnessed a resurgence of research interest in these research topics mainly underpinned by the urgency to conserve water resources. Based on the comprehensive evaluation of the existing literature, we identified the existing limitations on nejayote treatment and identified prospects for developing robust and technically feasible treatment possibilities. Within this review, we propose three main approaches for wastewater treatment and water reuse: physicochemical-based technologies, bioprocess in tandem with membrane technology, and low-cost bioprocesses coupled to physicochemical methods.

Towards a new understanding of bioelectrochemical systems from the perspective of microecosystems: A critical review

Bioelectrochemical system (BES) holds promise for sustainable energy generation and wastewater treatment. The microbial communities, as the core of BES, play a crucial role in its performance, thus needing to be systematically studied. However, researches considering microbial communities in BES from an ecological perspective are limited. This review provided a comprehensive summary of the BES with special emphasis on microecological principles, commencing with the dynamic formation and succession of the microbial communities. It also clarified the intricate interspecies relationships and quorum-sensing mechanisms regulated by dominant species. Furthermore, this review addressed the crucial themes in BES-related researches on ecological processes, including growth patterns, ecological structures, and defense strategies against external disturbances. By offering this novel perspective, it would contribute to enhancing the understanding of BES-centered technologies and facilitating future research in this field.

Improvement in Methane Production from Pelagic Sargassum Using Combined Pretreatments

The constant golden tides of Sargassum spp., identified to be a mixture of Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans, observed recently in the Mexican Caribbean have affected the marine ecosystem and the local economy and have created the need for solutions for their management and use. The Sargassum arrivals have thus been considered as third-generation feedstock for biofuel. Their potential for energetic conversion to biomethane was investigated, with hydrolysis as the limiting step due to its complex composition; therefore, in the present study, different physical, chemical, and enzymatic pretreatments and a combination of them have been evaluated, with the additional use of granular activated carbon, to determine the best yield and methane quality. The combined pretreatments of 2.5% hydrogen peroxide, followed by an enzymatic pretreatment (enzymatic extract from Trametes hirsuta isolated from decomposing wood in the Yucatán Peninsula-Mexico), was the best option, reaching a biodegradability of 95% and maximum methane yield of 387 ± 3.09 L CH₄/kg volatile solid. The use of a conductive material, such as granular activated carbon, did not generate significant changes in performance and methane concentration.

Promoting direct interspecies electron transfer and acetoclastic methanogenesis for enhancing anaerobic digestion of butanol octanol wastewater by coupling granular activated carbon and exogenous hydrogen

Butanol octanol wastewater (BOW) generated from syngas conversion of coal contained abundant toxic organic pollutants. Anaerobic digestion is a promising technology for BOW, but abundant toxic substances would inhibit the activity of anaerobic microorganisms. Granular activated carbon (GAC) and exogenous hydrogen (EH₂) were employed to enhance anaerobic digestion of BOW. The results indicated that methane production increased to 289.55 ± 17.43 mL CH₄/g COD in EH₂/GAC group, which was 1.07, 2.04, and 1.98 times of that in GAC, EH₂, and control groups, respectively. In EH₂/GAC group. The relative abundance of Geobacter and Methanosaeta increased rapidly to 25.36% and 52.81%, respectively, and the relative abundance of Clostridium was 9.78%. The underlying mechanism might be that GAC promoted the enrichment of Geobacter, and EH₂ changed metabolic mechanism of Clostridium, stimulating the enrichment of Methanosaeta. Direct interspecies electron transfer was promoted by EH₂/GAC, thus improving the methane production rate of BOW.

Enhancing anaerobic digestion process with addition of conductive materials

Anaerobic digestion is widely used for the treatment of wastewater for its low costs and bioenergy production, but the performances of anaerobic digestion often need improving in practical applications. The addition of conductive materials could lead to direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) among the anaerobic microorganisms, and consequently enhance the efficiencies of anaerobic digestion. In this paper, the effects of DIET via conductive materials on chemical organic demand (COD) removal, volatile fatty acid (VFA) consumption and methane production were reviewed. The reports on the increase of conductive microorganisms due to the addition of conductive materials were discussed. Results regarding activities of microorganisms and morphology and properties of sludge were described and commented, and future research needs were also proposed which included better understanding of the roles of DIET in each step of anaerobic digestion, mechanisms of metabolism of pollutants in DIET-established systems and inhibition of excessive dosage of conductive materials.

In Situ Electrochemical Characterization of a Microbial Fuel Cell Biocathode Running on Wastewater

The electrochemical features of microbial fuel cells’ biocathodes, running on wastewater, were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. Ex situ and in situ electrochemical assays were performed and the redox processes associated with the presence of microorganisms and/or biofilms were attained. Different controls using sterile media (abiotic cathode microbial fuel cell) and membranes covering the electrodes were performed to evaluate the source of the electrochemistry response (surface biofilms vs. biotic electrolyte). The bacteria presence, in particular when biofilms are allowed to develop, was related with the enhanced active redox processes associated with an improved catalytic activity, namely for oxygen reduction, when compared with the results attained for an abiotic microbial fuel cell cathode. The microbial main composition was also attained and is in agreement with other reported studies. The current study aims contributing to the establishment of the advantages of using biocathodes rather than abiotic, whose conditions are frequently harder to control and to contribute to a better understanding of the bioelectrochemical processes occurring on the biotic chambers and the electrode surfaces.

Direct interspecies electron transfer mechanism in enhanced methanogenesis: A mini-review

The role of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) on enhancement of methanogenesis has been studied. This mini-review updated the current researches on the potential role of DIET on enhanced performance for anaerobic digestion of organic substrates with effective strategies implemented. Since most experimental observations correlated with the DIET mechanism are yet to be consolidated, this article categorized and discussed the current experimental observations supporting DIET mechanism for methanogenesis, mainly based on those with supplement of carbon materials, from which the prospects and challenges for further studies to confirm the role of DIET in anaerobic digestion processes were highlighted.

Sulfur, Phosphorus and Metals in the Stoichiometric Estimation of Biomethane and Biohydrogen Yields

The estimation of biomethane or biohydrogen yield is used to evaluate energy recovery during the process of the anaerobic treatment of waste and wastewater. Mathematically calculated theoretical values can also be used in biomethane or biohydrogen potential tests as reference points to calculate which fraction of substrate is decomposed, when the substrate degradation stopped and when the sample’s self-digestion begins. This study suggests expanded forms of equations for anaerobic processes leading to either biomethane or biohydrogen. The traditional equations describing the conversion of a substrate with known carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen composition were expanded to account for the composition of sulfur (for biohydrogen yields) and phosphorus (both biohydrogen and biomethane yields). As an optional part, one metal cation was also incorporated into the chemical formula of the evaluated wastewater composition in case the compound of biodegradable interest exists as a salt. The equations derived here can be useful for researchers estimating energy recovery based on the elemental analysis of samples, such as algal biomass harvested during harmful algal blooms (HABs). Examples of biomethane and biohydrogen yield estimations from sulfur- and phosphorus-containing compounds are also provided.

Food waste leachate treatment using an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB): Effect of conductive material dosage under low and high organic loads

In this study, the performance of UASB for treating food waste leachate was investigated, with the objective of studying the effect of conductive material on anaerobic digestion (AD) enhancement at two organic loads. Conductive and control materials (i.e. graphite and glass) were first compared for their surface porosity then dosed in UASB for side-by-side comparison of the corresponding AD performance. In the first phase (organic load of 2660 mg-COD/L), compared to glass-added UASB, 29.5% reduction of effluent COD was observed in graphite-added UASB, however, only a little biogas enhancement (2.3%) was achieved. In the second phase (organic load of 4140 mg-COD/L), the results show that it could promote better AD enhancement in graphite-added UASB, where 36% effluent COD and 38% biogas production enhancement were simultaneously observed. The overall results support that utilization of conductive material is a viable approach for enhancing biogas production in UASB, especially for high organic loads.

Individual and combined effects of magnetite addition and external voltage application on anaerobic digestion of dairy wastewater

Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between exoelectrogenic fatty acid oxidizers and electrotrophic methanogens plays an important role in keeping the overall anaerobic digestion (AD) process well-balanced. This study examined the individual and combined effects of two different DIET-promoting strategies, i.e., magnetite addition (20 mM Fe) and external voltage application (0.6 V), in continuous digesters treating dairy wastewater. Although the strategies were both effective in enhancing the process performance and stability, adding magnetite had a much greater stimulatory effect. External voltage contributed little to the methane yield, and the digester with magnetite addition alone achieved stable performance, comparable to that of the digester where both strategies were combined, at short hydraulic retention times (down to 7.5 days). Diverse (putative) electroactive microorganisms were significantly enriched under DIET-promoting conditions, particularly with magnetite addition. The overall results suggest that magnetite addition could effectively enhance AD performance and stability by promoting DIET-based electro-syntrophic microbial interactions.

Biofilm microbial composition changes due to different surface chemical modifications of activated carbon cloths in the biotransformation of 4-nitrophenol

Activated carbon cloths (ACCs) were used as biofilms supports in the anaerobic biotransformation of 4-nitrophenol (4NP). As received ACC material (AW) was oxidized with HNO₃ (OX) and then functionalized with anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQ). The three ACCs were packed in hybrid UASB reactors and seeded with anaerobic granular sludge for biotransformation experiments. The results indicated that ACC-packed bioreactors improved the biotransformation of 4NP by twofold as compared to the control reactor without support materials. However, the biotransformation effciency of AW, OX and AQ was very similar (59%), indicating the role of ACC as biofilm support and not as redox mediator. After 4NP biotransformation several physicochemical and biological changes were observed like (1) the point of zero charge (pH_PZC) shift from acidic values (AW = 5.0, OX = 3.4, AQ = 3.1) to neutral values (pH_PZC = 7.6 on average), (2) increase in the concentration of acidic and basic surface functional groups over ACC materials and the amount of supported biomass on ACCs due to biofilm formation, and (3) enrichment of exoelectrogenic microorganisms belonging to the genera Geobacter over carbonyl-rich ACC surface as revealed by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Overall, the results suggest that chemical modifications of ACCs changed the microbial composition of the biofilm, but the higher concentration of carbonyl groups on ACC did not affect the biotransformation of 4NP.
