What are the 100 most cited fungal genera?

The global diversity of fungi has been estimated between 2 to 11 million species, of which only about 155 000 have been named. Most fungi are invisible to the unaided eye, but they represent a major component of biodiversity on our planet, and play essential ecological roles, supporting life as we know it. Although approximately 20 000 fungal genera are presently recognised, the ecology of most remains undetermined. Despite all this diversity, the mycological community actively researches some fungal genera more commonly than others. This poses an interesting question: why have some fungal genera impacted mycology and related fields more than others? To address this issue, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the top 100 most cited fungal genera. A thorough database search of the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed was performed to establish which genera are most cited. The most cited 10 genera are Saccharomyces, Candida, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Botrytis, Pichia, Cryptococcus and Alternaria. Case studies are presented for the 100 most cited genera with general background, notes on their ecology and economic significance and important research advances. This paper provides a historic overview of scientific research of these genera and the prospect for further research. Rhizopus stolonifer and related control strategies in postharvest fruit: A review

Rhizopus stolonifer is one of the main pathogens in postharvest storage logistics of more than 100 kinds of fruit, such as strawberries, tomatoes and melons. In this paper, the research on the morphology and detection, pathogenicity and infection mechanism of Rhizopus stolonifer was reviewed. The control methods of Rhizopus stolonifer in recent years was summarized from three dimensions of physics, chemistry and biology, including the nanomaterials, biological metabolites, light control bacteria, etc. Future direction of postharvest Rhizopus stolonifer infection control was analyzed from two aspects of pathogenic mechanism research and new composite technology. The information provided in this review will help researchers and technicians to deepen their understanding of the pathogenicity of Rhizopus stolonifer, and develop more effective control methods in the future.

Iturin A Induces Resistance and Improves the Quality and Safety of Harvested Cherry Tomato

The soft rot disease caused by Rhizopus stolonifer is an important disease in cherry tomato fruit. In this study, the effect of iturin A on soft rot of cherry tomato and its influence on the storage quality of cherry tomato fruit were investigated. The results showed that 512 μg/mL of iturin A could effectively inhibit the incidence of soft rot of cherry tomato fruit. It was found that iturin A could induce the activity of resistance-related enzymes including phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), glucanase (GLU), and chitinase (CHI), and active oxygen-related enzymes including ascorbate peroxidases (APX), superoxide dismutases (SOD), catalases (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR) of cherry tomato fruit. In addition, iturin A treatment could slow down the weight loss of cherry tomato and soften the fruit. These results indicated that iturin A could retard the decay and improve the quality of cherry tomato fruit by both the inhibition growth of R. stolonifera and the inducing the resistance.

Antifungal Activity In Vitro and In Vivo of Mesquite Extract (Prosopis glandulosa) Against Phytopathogenic Fungi

Fungi are the primary infectious agents in plant crops and many post-harvest fungal diseases of fruit and vegetables causing significant economic losses worldwide. Here, the antifungal effect of Prosopis glandulosa extract (PgE) against phytopathogenic fungi was evaluated. The effect with PgE (5, 4, 2, 1, 0%) as AI (%) and radial growth rate reduction (K_r %) were determined in vitro in Colletotrichum gloeosporoides, Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizopus oryzae and R. stolonifer (1 × 10⁵ spores/mL). The phytopathogenicity of fungal strains was performed under in vivo conditions (room temperature, 25-30 °C and refrigeration, ~ 4 °C) by fruit surface inoculation method on strawberries, tomatoes and carrots by recording the development of mycelial growth, necrosis, soft rot and dehydration symptoms showed on each fruit at 14 days. The extract (5%) showed the highest AI against C. gloesporioides (~ 96%), and F. oxysporum (~ 79%) and growth rate reduction of 74.92% and 64.82% respectively. Likewise, the extract controls the development of phytopathogenicity symptoms against C. gloesporioides and F. oxysporum in vivo conditions, nevertheless, was less efficiency against both Rhizopus species. The P. glandulosa extract represents an efficient, economical, and eco-friendly alternative to preserve the quality of the agricultural products and to increase their shelf life.
