Fenton-Like Oxidation of Antibiotic Ornidazole Using Biochar-Supported Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron as Heterogeneous Hydrogen Peroxide Activator

Synergetic effect of green synthesized NZVI@Chitin-modified ZSM-5 for efficient oxidative degradation of tetracycline

The aggregation and limited activity of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) in aqueous media hinder its practical application. In this study, a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, robust, and efficient synthesis method for NZVI-based composite was developed. NZVI@Chitin-modified ZSM-5 (NZVI@C-ZSM) composite was facilely and greenly synthesized by loading NZVI into alkali-modified ZSM-5 molecular sieves after modifying with chitin as a surfactant and binder. NZVI@C-ZSM exhibited remarkable efficacy in TC removal, achieving a removal efficiency of 97.72% within 60 min. Compared with pristine NZVI, NZVI@C-ZSM demonstrated twice the removal efficiency, indicating that NZVI@C-ZSM effectively improved the dispersion and stability of NZVI. This enhancement provided more reactive sites for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), significantly boosting catalytic activity and durability while reducing the potential risk of secondary pollution. An improved two-parameter pseudo-first-order kinetic model was used to effectively characterize the reaction kinetics. The mechanism for TC removal primarily involved an adsorption process and chemical oxidation-reduction reactions induced by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2-). Three potential degradation pathways for TC were suggested. Furthermore, NZVI@C-ZSM exhibited good resistance to interference, suggesting its broad potential for practical applications in complex environmental conditions. This study offers a viable material and method for addressing the issue of antibiotic-contaminated water, with potential applications in water resource management.

Improvement strategy of citrate and biochar assisted nano-palladium/iron composite for effective dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol

Rapid passivation and aggregation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) seriously limit its performance in the remediation of different contaminants from wastewater. To overcome such issues, in the present study, nano-palladium/iron (nPd/Fe) was simultaneously improved by biochar (BC) prepared from discarded peanut shells and green complexing agent sodium citrate (SC). For this purpose, a composite (SC-nPd/Fe@BC) was successfully synthesized to remove 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) from wastewater. In the SC-nPd/Fe@BC, BC acts as a carrier with dispersed nPd/Fe particles to effectively prevent its agglomeration, and increased the specific surface area of the composite, thereby improving the reactivity and stability of nPd/Fe. Characterization results demonstrated that the SC-nPd/Fe@BC composites were well dispersed, and the agglomeration was weakened. The formation of the passivation layer on the surface of the particles was inhibited, and the mechanism of SC and BC improving the reactivity of nPd/Fe was clarified. Different factors were found to influence the reductive dichlorination of 2,4-DCP, including Pd loading, Fe:C, SC addition, temperature, initial pH, and initial pollutant concentration. The dechlorination results revealed that the synergistic effect of the BC and SC made the removal efficiency and dechlorination rate of 2,4-DCP by SC-nPd/Fe@BC reached to 96.0 and 95.6%, respectively, which was better than that of nPd/Fe (removal: 46.2%, dechlorination: 45.3%). Kinetic studies explained that the dechlorination reaction of 2,4-DCP and the data were better represented by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The reaction rate constants followed the order of SC-nPd/Fe@BC (0.0264 min-1) > nPd/Fe@BC (0.0089 min-1) > SC-nPd/Fe (0.0081 min-1) > nPd/Fe (0.0043 min-1). Thus, SC-nPd/Fe@BC was capable of efficiently reducing 2,4-DCP and the dechlorination efficiency of BC and SC synergistically assisted composite on 2,4-DCP was much better than that of SC-nPd/Fe, nPd/Fe@BC and nPd/Fe. Findings suggested that SC-nPd/Fe@BC can be promising for efficient treatment of chlorinated pollutants.

Insight into the catalytic performances of Fe0@chitosan/cellulose green hybrid structure for enhanced photo-Fenton's oxidation of levofloxacin toxic residuals: Pathway and toxicity

A green hybridized structure of Fe0 painted chitosan/cellulose base (Fe0@CS/CF) has been developed using cellulose extracted from sugarcane bagasse along with reduction agents sourced from Khaya senegalensis leaves. The composite was assessed as an affordable, powerful, and multifunctional catalyst for enhancing the degradation of Levofloxacin (LVX) remnants within water supplies via photo-Fenton's interactions. Using a dosage of 0.5 g/L, the Fe0@CS/CF blend demonstrated noteworthy catalytic qualities, resulting in the complete photo-Fenton's degradation of LVX at a level of 25 mg/L after 40 min. However, the complete diminution of organic carbon (TOC) occurred only after 100 min, suggesting the presence of significant intermediate residues. The identified intermediate chemicals and confirmed hydroxyl radicals as the main oxidizer suggest that the degradation pathway involves carboxylation/decarboxylation, hydroxylation, demethylation, and oxidation of quinolone rings. The toxicity properties of untreated LVX solutions and their subsequent oxidized byproducts were assessed by evaluating their inhibiting impact on Vibrio fischeri over various durations. The samples that experienced partial oxidation at initial testing demonstrated a higher level of toxicity in comparison to the parent LVX. However, the sample that was treated for 100 min demonstrated substantial biological safety and a non-toxic nature. The blend of ingredients has a synergistic impact that enhances the uptake, Fenton's, photocatalytic, and photo-Fenton's characteristics of the hosted Fe0 nanoparticles.

Applications and synergistic degradation mechanisms of nZVI-modified biochar for the remediation of organic polluted soil and water: A review

Increasing organic pollution in soil and water has garnered considerable attention in recent years. Nano zero-valent iron-modified biochar (nZVI/BC) has been proven to remediate the contaminated environment effectively due to its abundant active sites and unique reducing properties. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the application of nZVI/BC in organic polluted environmental remediation and its mechanisms. Firstly, the review introduced primary synthetic methods of nZVI/BC, including in-situ synthesis (carbothermal reduction and green synthesis) and post-modification (liquid-phase reduction and ball milling). Secondly, the application effects of nZVI/BC were discussed in remediating soil and water polluted by antibiotics, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and dyes. Thirdly, this review explored the mechanisms of the adsorption and chemical degradation of nZVI/BC, and synergistic degradation mechanisms of nZVI/BC-AOPs and nZVI/BC-Microbial interactions. Fourth, the factors that influence the removal of organic pollutants using nZVI/BC were summarized, encompassing synthesis conditions (raw materials, pyrolysis temperature and aging of nZVI/BC) and external factors (reagent dosage, pH, and coexisting substances). Finally, this review proposed future challenges for the application of nZVI/BC in environmental remediation. This review offers valuable insights for advancing technology in the degradation of organic pollutants using nZVI/BC and promoting its on-site application.

Accelerated Cr (VI) removal by a three-dimensional electro-Fenton system using green iron nanoparticles

Green-synthesized iron nanoparticles (GAP-FeNP) were used as particle electrodes in a three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3DEF) process to accelerate the removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)]. Removal was evaluated by varying the pH (3.0, 6.0, and 9.0) and initial Cr (VI) concentrations (10, 30, and 50 mg/L) at 5 and 25 min. These results demonstrated that GAP-FeNP/3DEF treatment achieved more than 94% Cr (VI) removal under all tested conditions. Furthermore, it was observed that Cr (VI) removal exceeded 98% under pH 9.0 in all experimental parameters tested. The results of the response surface methodology (RSM) determined two optimal conditions: the first, characterized by a pH of 3.0, Cr (VI) concentration at 50 mg/L, and 25 min, yielded a Cr (VI) removal of 99.7%. The second optimal condition emerged at pH 9.0, with Cr (VI) concentrations of 10 mg/L and 5 min, achieving a Cr (VI) removal of 99.5%. This study highlights the potential of the GAP-FeNP to synergistically accelerate Cr (VI) removal by the 3DEF process, allowing faster elimination and expansion of the alkaline (pH 9.0) applicability. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The required time for >99% of Cr (VI) removal by the GAP-FeNP/3DEF process was shortened from 25 to 5 min. EF process with GAP-FeNP reduces the time necessary for Cr (VI) removal, which is 67% faster than conventional methods. EF process using GAP-FeNP removed >94% of Cr (VI) after 25 min for all initial Cr (VI) concentrations and pH treatments. Cr (VI) removal by the GAP-FeNP/3DEF process was >98% at a pH of 9.0, widening the solution pH applicability.

Recent Advances in Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nZVI)-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs): Applications, Mechanisms, and Future Prospects

The fast rise of organic pollution has posed severe health risks to human beings and toxic issues to ecosystems. Proper disposal toward these organic contaminants is significant to maintain a green and sustainable development. Among various techniques for environmental remediation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can non-selectively oxidize and mineralize organic contaminants into CO2, H2O, and inorganic salts using free radicals that are generated from the activation of oxidants, such as persulfate, H2O2, O2, peracetic acid, periodate, percarbonate, etc., while the activation of oxidants using catalysts via Fenton-type reactions is crucial for the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), i.e., •OH, •SO4-, •O2-, •O3CCH3, •O2CCH3, •IO3, •CO3-, and 1O2. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), with a core of Fe0 that performs a sustained activation effect in AOPs by gradually releasing ferrous ions, has been demonstrated as a cost-effective, high reactivity, easy recovery, easy recycling, and environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalyst of AOPs. The combination of nZVI and AOPs, providing an appropriate way for the complete degradation of organic pollutants via indiscriminate oxidation of ROS, is emerging as an important technique for environmental remediation and has received considerable attention in the last decade. The following review comprises a short survey of the most recent reports in the applications of nZVI participating AOPs, their mechanisms, and future prospects. It contains six sections, an introduction into the theme, applications of persulfate, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, and other oxidants-based AOPs catalyzed with nZVI, and conclusions about the reported research with perspectives for future developments. Elucidation of the applications and mechanisms of nZVI-based AOPs with various oxidants may not only pave the way to more affordable AOP protocols, but may also promote exploration and fabrication of more effective and sustainable nZVI materials applicable in practical applications.

Ferromagnetic Biochar Prepared from Hydrothermally Modified Calcined Mango Seeds for Fenton-like Degradation of Indigo Carmine

Biochar and ferromagnetic biochar obtained from the pyrolysis of dried mango seeds and modified using a hydrothermal method were used as catalyst for the heterogeneous degradation of indigo carmine in an aqueous medium. These prepared biochars were characterized using different techniques: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The analyses of the results revealed the presence of iron oxide in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4) in the catalyst. The catalytic tests carried out with this composite material showed a significant degradation of indigo carmine. The maximum degradation of indigo carmine in the aqueous solution was reached after 240 min of agitation. The Fenton degradation process using irradiation with a 100 W electric lamp and hydrogen peroxide (concentration 4 mol/L) showed the best results at pH = 3. From this study, it emerged that the second-order kinetic model better described the degradation process, and it gave lower half-lives compared to those obtained with the first-order kinetic law. The study also showed that ferromagnetic biochar could be prepared from mango seeds and used for the degradation of indigo carmine in an aqueous solution.

FeCl3-activated biochar catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton oxidation of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole in water

One-step FeCl₃-mediated pyrolysis/activation was developed for preparation of bermudagrass (BG)-derived FeCl₃-activated biochars (FA-BCs) from bermudagrass (BG) as a heterogenous Fenton catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton oxidation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water. The FA-BC prepared at the FeCl₃ to BG mass ratio of 2 (FA-BC) exhibited higher adsorption and Fenton oxidation of SMX than other mass ratios of the FeCl₃ to BG. FA-BC presented the great surface area (835 m²/g) and high SMX adsorption capacity (195 mg SMX/g BC), which was higher than various BCs in the previous studies. Additionally, the surface of FA-BC was attached with Fe₂O₃, Fe⁰, and Fe₃O₄ after the FeCl₃ activation. Under the optimal conditions for Fenton reaction (SMX concentration, 100 mg/L; loading of FA-BC, 0.1 g/L; dose of H₂O₂, 200 mg/L; temperature, 20 °C; pH 3; reaction time, 12 h), SMX and COD removal efficiencies reached 99.94% and 65.19%, respectively. Increasing reaction temperature from 20 to 50 °C significantly improved the SMX oxidation rate from 0.46 to 1.04 h^-1. The HO· radicals were proved to play a major role during the Fenton oxidation of SMX. In addition, the SMX solution treated by Fenton oxidation showed much less toxicity than the initial SMX solution. Additionally, the reusability tests of FA-BC indicated that 89.58% removal efficiency for SMX was still achieved after 3 cycles of Fenton oxidation under the optimal conditions. Furthermore, FA-BC can also efficiently remove SMX from the dairy wastewater. Therefore, FA-BC showed a high potential to eliminate aqueous SMX through adsorption and heterogeneous Fenton oxidation.

Noval porous phosphate-solubilizing bacteria beads loaded with BC/nZVI enhanced the transformation of lead fractions and its microecological regulation mechanism in soil

Soil lead pollution becomes a serious environmental problem. Microbial remediation has received widespread attentions due to high efficiency and no secondary pollution. In this research, a noval porous spherical phosphate-solubilizing bacteria bead loaded with biochar/nZVI (Bio-bead) was used to passivate lead in soil, and the effects and microecological regulation mechanisms of this process were also investigated. The results showed that the pH, OM, and AP of soil in the Bio-bead group were increased and the ORP was decreased over time compared with the blank group. The proportion of stable (oxidizable and residue) fractions of lead in Bio-bead group (45%) was much higher than that of the blank group (35%). In addition, the result of microbial community structure showed that Bio-beads did not change the species of dominant bacterial, excepting the abundance of Pseudomonas increased significantly and the abundance of Sphingomonas reduced during remediation. Redundancy analysis showed that pH, OM, AP and the ratio of residual and oxidizable fractions lead in soil were positively correlated with the abundance of Pseudomonas, while ORP was negatively correlated with the abundance of Pseudomonas. These findings have proved that Bio-bead is a potential strategy for remediation of lead-contaminated soil even in complexed soils.

Hydrogen Peroxide Activated by Biochar-Supported Sulfidated Nano Zerovalent Iron for Removal of Sulfamethazine: Response Surface Method Approach

Biochar (BC)-supported sulfide-modified nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI/BC) was prepared using the liquid-phase reduction method for the application of the removal of sulfamethazine (SMZ) from water. The reaction conditions were optimized by the Box−Behnken response surface method (RSM). A model was constructed based on the influence factors of the removal rate, i.e., the carbon-to-iron ratio (C/Fe), iron-sulfur ratio (Fe/S), pH, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration, and the influence of each factor on the removal efficiency was investigated. The optimal removal process parameters were determined based on theoretical and experimental results. The results showed that the removal efficiency was significantly affected by the C/Fe ratio and pH (p < 0.0001) but relatively weakly affected by the Fe/S ratio (p = 0.0973) and H2O2 concentration (p = 0.022). The optimal removal process parameters were as follows: 0.1 mol/L H2O2, a pH of 3.18, a C/Fe ratio of 0.411, and a Fe/S ratio of 59.75. The removal rate of SMZ by S-nZVI/BC was 100% under these conditions. Therefore, it is feasible to use the Box−Behnken RSM to optimize the removal of emerging pollutants in water bodies by S-nZVI/BC.

New theoretical investigation of mechanism, kinetics, and toxicity in the degradation of dimetridazole and ornidazole by hydroxyl radicals in aqueous phase

Dimetridazole (DMZ) and ornidazole (ONZ) have been widely used to treat anaerobic and protozoal infections. The residues of DMZ/ONZ persist in the water environment. The mechanisms and kinetics of hydroxyl-initiated oxidation, the primary DMZ/ONZ degradation method, were evaluated by quantum chemical methods.·OH-induced degradation of DMZ and ONZ shared many mechanistic and kinetic characteristics. The most feasible degradation pathway involved forming OH-imidazole adducts and NO₂. The OH-imidazole adducts were subsequently degraded into double·OH imidazole intermediates. The rate coefficients for·OH degradation of DMZ and ONZ were 4.32 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and 4.42 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 at 298 K, respectively. The lifetimes of DMZ and ONZ treated with·OH at concentrations of 10^-9-10^-18 mol L^-1 at 298 K were τ_DMZ = 0.231-2.31 × 10⁸ s and τ_ONZ = 0.226-2.26 × 10⁸ s, respectively. Toxicity assessment showed that the first degradation products of DMZ and ONZ exhibited enhanced aquatic toxicity, whereas most of the secondary degradation products were not harmful to aquatic organisms. Some of transformation products were still developmental toxicant or mutagenicity positive.

Synthesis and characterization of Fe0@chitosan/cellulose biocompatible composites from natural resources as advanced carriers for ibuprofen drug: reaction kinetics and equilibrium

Fe0@chitosan/cellulose was synthesized as a carrier for Ibuprofen drug. It has achieved a loading capacity of 553 mg g−1 and a slow release profile for 260 h, which is controlled by complex diffusion and erosion mechanisms.
