Interparental Conflict and Early Adulthood Depression: Maternal Care and Psychological Needs Satisfaction as Mediators

Perinatal cumulative risk scores for depression symptoms in young people from the Growing Up in New Zealand longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Adolescent depression has increased markedly over the last decade and often persists into adulthood with a range of adverse outcomes. Identifying the perinatal risk factors contributing to adolescent depression is crucial to advise early interventions.

METHODS

The study included 4563 young people from the Growing Up in New Zealand (GUiNZ) longitudinal study who completed a questionnaire on depression symptoms at age 12 years (Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CESD-10). Cumulative Risk (CR) scores were created by combining the perinatal risk factors significantly associated with depression symptoms. Then, these CR scores were grouped into three levels and their association with depression symptoms was investigated in univariable and multivariable analyses.

RESULTS

We found a statistically significant association between the CR scores (from one to six perinatal risk factors) and depression score at age 12, compared to the no-risk factor group, suggesting a dose-response relationship. In the adjusted analysis, young people exposed to the lower CR score (1-3 risk factors) had a 0.85 unit increase in depression score (p- < .001), and those exposed to the higher CR (4 ≥ risk factors) had a 1.70 unit increase (p < .001) compared to no perinatal risk factors.

LIMITATIONS

Our model was focused on the perinatal CR score without including the effects of childhood risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS

The perinatal CR score is a valuable approach to identifying the subgroup of young people who are most at risk for depression symptoms. As such, early interventions that simultaneously address multiple perinatal risk factors for depression are recommended.

Early life stress in relation with risk of overweight, depression, and their comorbidity across adulthood: findings from a British birth cohort

BACKGROUND

Multimorbidity, known as the co-occurrence of at least two chronic conditions, has become of increasing concern in the current context of ageing populations, though it affects all ages. Early life risk factors of multimorbidity include adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), particularly associated with psychological conditions and weight problems. Few studies have considered related mechanisms and focus on old age participants. We are interested in estimating, from young adulthood, the risk of overweight-depression comorbidity related to ACEs while adjusting for early life confounders and intermediate variables.

METHODS

We used data from the 1958 National Child Development Study, a prospective birth cohort study (N = 18 558). A four-category outcome (no condition, overweight only, depression only and, overweight-depression comorbidity) was constructed at 23, 33, and 42 years. Multinomial logistic regression models adjusting for intermediate variables co-occurring with this outcome were created. ACEs and sex interaction on comorbidity risk was tested.

RESULTS

In our study sample (N = 7762), we found that ACEs were associated with overweight-depression comorbidity risk throughout adulthood (RRR [95% CI] at 23y = 3.80 [2.10-6.88]) though less overtime. Comorbidity risk was larger than risk of separate conditions. Intermediate variables explained part of the association. After full-adjustment, an association remained (RRR [95% CI] at 23y = 2.00 [1.08-3.72]). Comorbidity risk related to ACEs differed by sex at 42.

CONCLUSION

Our study provides evidence on the link and potential mechanisms between ACEs and the co-occurrence of mental and physical diseases throughout the life-course. We suggest addressing ACEs in intervention strategies and public policies to go beyond single disease prevention.

Effects of interparental conflict on children's depression in the context of COVID-19: Does parent-child conflict play a role?

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of depression among children has dramatically increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE

Through focusing on verbal fights, the most common form of family conflict, this study examined the association between interparental conflict and children's depression and explored the mediating role of parent-child conflict.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

A total of 1005 children (47.0 % females) aged between 9 and 12 years old constituted the analytical subjects, who had been drawn from the 2020 survey of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS).

METHODS

Descriptive statistics were obtained, and bivariate correlation analysis and mediation analysis were performed.

RESULTS

According to the Spearman correlation analysis, interparental conflict and children's depression were positively correlated (ρ = 0.214, p < 0.01); moreover, parent-child conflict was significantly positively associated with both interparental conflict (ρ = 0.450, p < 0.01) and children's depression (ρ = 0.224, p < 0.01). Additionally, mediation analysis demonstrated that, after controlling for sociodemographic factors, parent-child conflict operated as a mediator between interparental conflict and children's depression. More specifically, parent-child conflict accounted for 47.6 % of the total effect of interparental conflict on children's depression.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggested that frequent conflicts between parents predicted increased parent-child conflict, which, in turn, elevated the risk of depression for children. To reduce the risk of children's depression, it is necessary to create a good environment and build a harmonious relationship within the family. At the same time, specific supportive services, such as family therapy, filial therapy, and couple relationship education, should be provided.
